Submi ed by Dr. Karl Janson Superintendent Everton Schools

On November 4th, 2014, the school district will ask the voters to approve a 55 cent property tax to make repairs and renovations to the district’s buildings. The high school section was built in the early 1940’s and the old elementary wing was built in the 1950’s. Neither section has been upgraded since first being constructed. According to Dr. Janson, this causes them to waste a lot of energy. “During the winter of 2014, we burned 24,500

gallons of propane. We were unable to keep classrooms in those sections at room temperature without employing expensive space heaters. “In the spring, summer and fall months, these sections use window AC units which are loud and inefficient. “The project we have put together will address these issues by removing the large window banks that allow so much of the heat and cold to go in and out, replacing them with insulated walls with much fewer windows. “We did this in one room two years ago and the difference is amazing.

Even during the coldest days last winter, this room was able to maintain room temperature. “We will also be installing new energy efficient lighting in insulated drop ceilings. Additionally we will be removing the window AC units and the boiler and replacing it with an energy efficient HVAC system. “Currently to heat one room in these sections we must heat them all. This will allow us to only heat and cool rooms that need it. We will also be able to move away from our dependence on propane which as you may recall had a shortage

E.Coli And Coliform Found In Local Wells

Dade County Well Water by Dade County Health Department The Dade County Health Department has recently processed numerous water samples from local citizens, mostly from the Everton area. The tests provide information on the presence or absence of coliform and ecoli bacteria in their water use. A small percentage of these samples have resulted in positive results for either form of these contaminants. Keep in mind that these test results are not from all the wells in the area, but just from the ones that were tested. Citizens may get sample containers and instructions from the Dade County Health Department and get their water tested for $15.00, with re-

sults in 24 hours. They may alternately prefer to have their samples sent to the State lab for the same testing for $10.00, but the results will not be available for a week. Samples can only be submitted Monday through Wednesday, as incubation time must be considered. Your local health department will continue to provide the citizens prompt service. Larry Rice, EPHS (Environmental Public Health Specialist) will be available to answer any questions or concerns that citizens may have. People using private wells with concerns should either boil their water before drinking, or use bottled water until test results are re-

last year and our cost has gone up 30% for this year.” Dr. Janson said the feedback so far had been positive. “We understand that no one wants to pay more taxes, but as a school we are losing a lot of money literally out the windows that could be directed to improve the instructional programs in the district.” The projects are expected to save the district about $14,000 annually. In the last two years, the district has added a preschool, become an A+ school, high tech campus with Wi-Fi, and increased the number of graduates

attending college or some other post-secondary training while reducing the dropout rate. “We have a terrific school district. We are headed in the right direction in all areas. The older sections of the buildings need some upgrades and with the 21st century technologies we can save a lot of money. All of these projects with the exception of the roof repairs and replacements will have a direct impact on student learning in the classroom.” If anyone wishes to discuss the bond issue in more detail they should contact Dr. Janson at 417535-2221.

ceived. The source of contaminants in well water may be very difficult to find. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has visited Dade County. The DNR has the responsibility for rivers, streams, discharges from commercial sources, and public wastewater treatment processes. The Dade County Health Department will keep the local citizens informed of all progress in this area of concern. A few residents in Dade County, mainly the Everton area, have found they have e.coli or coliform bacteria in their water. Frank and Becky Jerome of rural Everton have had their well tested and the results were e.coli, a dangerous bacteria. Becky has been sick for months and they now wonder if there is a connection. Their water is sparkling in a glass, no odor or bad taste. Frank states his main concern of course is his wife, Becky, family, friends and neighbors. He worries about the elderly generation not knowing to check their wells. He just wants to get the word out and urges everyone to have their wells tested. For now, you are urged to have your wells analyzed. Frank and Becky are hoping for a solution to be found soon. Frank stated the situation is just really frustrating and hopes DNR and The Health Department finds what and where the contamination came from.
