In addition to her husband, Vesta is survived by a daughter and her husband, Cheryl and Ron Franklin of Carthage, Missouri; and three sons and their wives: Gary and Cathi Jennings of Mobile, Alabama; Terry and Stacey Jennings and Michael and Kathryn Jennings of Edmond, Oklahoma.

Also surviving are three sisters: Veda Thieman of Lockwood, Missouri; Marilyn and husband, Wayne Marshall of South Greenfield, Missouri: and Wanda and husband, John Webb of Miller, Missouri; two brothers: Lyndell and wife, Judy Hurt of Lamar,

Annual contest gives students opportunity to get creative in preventing littering.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) invite Missouri public, private, and homeschool students in grades K-8 to help fight litter in the Show-Me State -and to have creative and educational fun -- by participating in the 2015 “Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter-Free” trash-can-decorating contest.

The annual trash-can contest encourages school classes and groups to join in the fight against litter by decorating and displaying a large trash can with the “No MOre Trash!” logo and a l i t t e r- p re v e n t i o n message using a variety of creative media.

The annual contest is sponsored by MDC and MoDOT as part of the state’s “No MOre Trash!”

(NMT) statewide litter campaign. This partnership between MDC and MoDOT, along with thousands of volunteers,

is working to prevent and reduce litter in Missouri through education, prevention, and cleanup activities.

“In addition to teaching kids about how litter hurts them, their communities, and their environment, the contest gives students an opportunity to help prevent littering by creating and providing a trash can with the No MOre Trash! message in their schools or communities,” says MoDOT NMT Coordinator Stacy Armstrong.

Schools may submit one entry in each competition category: K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Entries are judged based on creativity, adherence to contest rules, and effective use of theme and logo. First-place winners from each competition category receive $200 awarded to the sponsoring schools.

All first-place winners are then eligible for a grand prize of a trophy and $600 awarded to the sponsoring school.

There is no entry fee for the contest.

Participating school groups must submit a completed entry form online with up to three photos to nomoretrash.org by

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American generates 4.3 pounds of solid waste per day. Based on this average and the state’s population of approximately six million people, Missouri accounts for more than 25 million pounds of garbage in one day – more than nine billion pounds of trash per year.

“A great deal of that trash shows up on our roadsides, natural areas, and waterways,” says MDC NMT Coordinator Joe Jerek. “Litter harms water quality and plant health, degrades natural areas, and hurts wildlife. Litter poses health risks and creates roadway and waterway safety hazards. It hurts property values, housing prices, landscape appearance, and our overall quality of life.

Littering is also illegal in Missouri and can result in a fine of up to $1,000 and one year in jail.”

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Sarah Townley of Golden City was among the nearly 900 youth delegates from 45 states and Puerto Rico attending the 2014 National 4-H Congress November 28-December 2 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The National 4-H Congress experience allowed 4-H members to learn new skills through workshops, hear from narecognized tionally speakers and experience southern culture.

Candidates for the trip are judged on a combination of scores from a written recognition form and an interview. Attendance at National 4-H Congress is a culminating event for many 4-H’ers

and a highly sought-after award. Only 20 4-H members from Missouri are selected to attend.

During National 4-H Congress, youth participated in educational workshops and hear from speakers such as the current Miss America. Delegates also volunteered in Atlanta by working in classrooms, cleaning up parks, preparing meals for homeless and shutins, sorting books to send to Africa and much more.

Rodney’s message Sunday morning was John: The Prophet of Advent.

Christ’s Matthew 3:1-11.

John the Baptist is one of the great heroes of the Bible.

Some of the other great heralds we have explored in the past three weeks include: Adam, whose sin and example demonstrate our need for a Savior; Moses, who heralded the coming of God’s law; Isaiah, the herald of the person and place of Christ’s birth; and Daniel, who foretold the time of Christ’s birth.

John’s ministry was prophesized by Isaiah (Isaiah 40:3-5). John 1;23.

The Bible describes John as a latter day Elijah. Mal. 4:5-6.

The Lord said that John was the greatest the prophets. of Matthew 11:7-14.

John is special because he was given the highest honor of announcing the Messiah’s arrival. In those days, John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent because the Kingdom on Heaven has come near. I will baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. He Himself will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire.”

1. He had the right name: John means “the Lord will be gracious.”

His name identified his mission to proclaim the coming of the Savior and his offer of salvation by Grace.

2. He did the right things. He preached in the wilderness to the less inhabited parts of Judea, not in the cities or Jerusalem. We must preach the Gospel wherever we are. His messages focused on preparation, a theme we are reminded of

during advent.

3. He had the right attitude: John realized that he was just a voice for God. He knew that salvation belonged to God, but telling others of this salvation belonged to him. He acknowledged his humble role and exalted his Savior.

4. He went to the right audiences: John realized that many of the people who came to be baptized were not truly repentant. A genuine repentance is more than a feeling. It is a change of mind regarding the sin. John boldly told the Pharisees and Sadduces that they needed to repent fo their sins. We need John’s boldness to share the good news of God’s gift of grace.

This gift is available only by Faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9.

Last Wednesday morning, Rick & I attended the graveside services for Dorothy Wood, 81, at Daughtery Cemetery.

Last Tuesday, Aunt Carol stopped by for a short visit and brought Rick some more of her wonderful cashew brittle. He loves that stuff and so do I. Kenny & Amber Payne hosted a dinner at their home on Christmas Eve. I believe baby Morgan Dodd was the hit of the party.

Last Wednesday, Rick & I treated Logan & Stormy Baker, Bree Ipock & Chelsey Martin to Chinese in Mt. Vernon before exchanging presents. Ran into Bobby & Nick Bryant and Cathy Vandegrift there, too.

Well, another Christmas arrived and my home was smelling great with all the food cooking.

We enjoyed having 23 family members for lunch and done lots of

visiting. Was glad that Aunt Carol Jones joined us instead of staying home alone. Rick visited his folks that morning so he wouldn't be in my hair and it worked out great!

I know lots of families got together and enjoyed the holidays.

Macky & Pam McDowell were happy to have all their bunch home.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Xmas and made lots of memories to remember it with.

Alan & Patty VanHooser were happy to have all their family together on Christmas Eve and I know they had lots of good food to eat, too.

Friday night, the Bakers and Killingsworths played pitch and us girls whooped it on the men.

We won all but 1 game.

Hooray!!

Patty & Earl hosted Xmas dinner at their new home and Cody had to miss it due to having a bug. I know several were sick over the holidays.

Pat Atkisson's home has been hopping all week and they cooked everything imaginable.

here visiting and they all love to cook.

Jarrod & Robin O'Connor hosted a birthday party on Sunday for their son Gavin's 6th birthday. Jarrod tried out his new smoker and it was a huge success.

Was sorry to hear Vesta "Hurt" Jennings, 84, of Greenfield passed away Christmas Day after a long battle with cancer. She will be dearly missed by her family & friends.

Also was saddened to get word, Clara Eugene "Jean" Limpus passed away Saturday night at the Ash Grove Nursing Home. She will be dearly missed by her huge family & friends.

Sympathy goes out to all those who have lost loved ones.

I had to go to work in Saturday Republic evening just as it began to snow & sleet. Talk about a slick drive to Albatross; it was horrible. I ran out of it about the time I got to I-44 and when I got to Republic it hadn't done a thing. The storm just hit at the wrong time for me.

Kim took Wade coon hunting and Chloe and I did a lot of candy making and cookie baking. We had a good time. We took them to church at Arcola Christian Church for their Christmas program.

Afterward Kim, Lesia, Carol Jones, Betty Vandegrift, Kelbey and Asa Bowles stopped at Ken’s Café in Arcola and had lunch. Back home for more entertainment.

On Monday, Kim took Wade out into the field so he could shoot his gun.

Kelbey, Chloe and myself went out for lunch at Mt. Vernon and then to Walmart. Around 4, we took the kids home after having them from Saturday.

They were tired, worn out and grumpy. Wade cried and said he wanted to spend the whole Christmas break at our house. I needed to go back to work to rest.

Again, I would like to thank everyone for all their prayers, concerns, acts of kindness that has been shown to our family.

God is good and answers prayer.

The Arcola Church has been so supportive, we are so impressed and want to thank them for all their support.

Dustin has completed all of his testing and now it is just the waiting game to see when he gets to go to MD Anderson. Also a special thanks to the Lockwood Mercy Clinic who has been on the ball and went the extra mile to speed all of this along.

I told my vice president at the hospital about how this clinic has gone above and beyond. We are so lucky to have home town doctors that really do personally care for their patients as they already know so many of them. God has blessed this community with them.

A couple weekends ago, I ran outside to see 2 men unloading a truck of split wood for Kim and myself. Talk about hard work. Those 2 special men were Eric Steeley and Zach Holland. They will never know what that act of kindness means to us. Thank you.

All the foundation is poured at Kelbey and Asa and right after the first of the year, hopefully, we will see some action.

They said once they start it should only take about 3-4 weeks to have it up.

That is the quick part, then months of finishing

it as we are going to do a lot of the work ourselves.

Now I know what I have been saving those vacation days for. Painting and more painting.

Did it for Jacob and now Kelbey. We are all excited.

She keeps buying stuff for the house and guess who gets to store it???? ME!!! I will have a lot of room when she gets into her house.

Carol Jones ate Christmas lunch with her niece, Carmen Baker and family.

David Clabough ended up in the hospital the week of Christmas and ended up having open heart surgery on

Christmas Eve. He is doing great. I ran up and saw him one day.

Also, cousin, Jim Shirk, had a stroke and was in Cox Hospital. He is going to have to undergo some rehab. Keep them both in your prayers.

Like I said my news is all over the place, I am sure I have missed something.

Our office was closed on Friday, but I went in and worked. It is so amazing how much work you can get done with nobody there.

Monday, Rayburn Mein will entertain Good Shepherd residents with singing. That should be a good program.

Several residents have a small Christmas tree in their room. Each one is beautiful. Frieda has a small pretty one.

Tonight, she received a pretty red poinsetta. In my Christmas corner, I have a little bitty interesting tree and a poinsetta with shades of pink, surrounded by cards and seasonal items.

Good Shepherd is decorated so pretty. Too bad they can’t have open house.

I should say Rayburn’s sister, Shirley, is a resident of RCF Good Shepherd.

The United Methodist Kids Quest re-

cently had a family night spaghetti supper for their parents. It was a smashing success.

Some Christmas riddles: Q. What did the gingerbread man put on his bed? A. A cookie sheet.

Q. Why are Christmas trees such bad knitters? A. They are always dropping their needles.

Q. Why did they let the turkey join the band for the Christmas parade? A. Because he had the drumsticks.

Thursday morning, I am packing to go home., Last evening, we had carolers from First Baptist Church teenagers and adults. We also had a smidge of snow or ice.

Congratulations to Greenfield 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Kara Eggerman, on the arrival of twin boys, Gage Linden & Gavin Russell. Gage arrived at 11:19 pm, tipping the scales at 4 lb, 7 oz and 19 1/2 inches long. Gavin arrived at 11:23 pm, weighing 4 lb, 13 oz and 17 3/4 inches long. They are welcomed home by one sister and one brother and Daddy, of course.

Also congratulations to Greg & Cassidy DeJager on the arrival of their twins, a boy, Ryker and a girl, Raeleigh, who arrived on November 29.

They were welcomed home by siblings, Raegan, Ryelan & Rexton.

Tina Summers has been battling a cold and bronchitis for several weeks and had to go back to the doctor for another shot & more medicine. We hope she gets to feeling better soon.

Last Monday, Rick & I decided to finish up our Christmas shopping in Springfield and boy, was that a mistake. Traffic was horrible but we gotter done.

Carolyn Kile had gallbladder surgery last week and has been home taking it easy. But, she sure enjoyed her granddaughter, Laela, getting here and keeping her company this week.

David Clabough had open heart surgery last week and Jim Shirk had a stroke and both were in the hospital over Xmas.

Not a very good holiday for these guys. Wishing them all a speedy recovery.

Lucille Franklin ended up in the hospital again this year around Christmas. She spent 5 days at Mercy. She has been one sick, weak little lady. Keep her in your prayers. She will have a long recovery.

Those gathering at the Liberty Baptist Church for a family gathering on Christmas night was Betty Lou Vandegrift as hostess. Those joining were Linda, Don, Greg Coble; Matt, Katina, Brooke, Blaine Willard; Doug and Betty Vandegrift; Kirk, Jennifer, Taylor, Caden Vandegrift; Jared, Amber, Addy and Jaxon Vandegrift; Tim and Lynetta Leeper; Jason Leeper; Kim and Lesia Jones, Dustin, Melinda, William, Wade and Chloe Jones; Jacob and Abby Jones; Kelbey and Asa Bowles; Darren, Sandy, Shelby and Blake Vandegrift.

We missed part of Lynetta’s family, a count of 7; Lucille Franklin was missed.

Since Thanksgiving, we have a new registered nurse in the family.

The last part of November, Lynetta and Tim’s daughter, Courtnee, got engaged and the word is out that my son Jacob and Abby Jones are expecting their first child.

Our family is all doing the happy dance. Boy is their world going to be rocking. More at MiMi’s breakfast table. Mom’s family just keeps growing.

Christmas morning, Jacob, Abby, Kelbey and Asa came for breakfast and we had our Christmas exchange. It was a nice lazy morning.

On Christmas Eve, we had our annual supper of shrimp and crab legs. We have learned to open presents first for the children. Wade decided it was a lot of fun cracking those crab legs. He ate more than I have ever seen him. Those joining us was Carol Jones, Dustin, Melinda, Wade and Chloe. William was missed, Jacob and Abby, Kelbey and Asa. Melinda Jones was not feeling so good on Friday night, so on Saturday morning I got the call that the kids were coming down. They were all excited.

As it stands now, I will be home when I write news next time.

Plans are for me to leave Good Shepherd this Thursday, the 18th, for home.

I do have mixed feelings about leaving. Yes, I want to be home, but I have been very happy here at the Home.

I have a good roommate, Frieda Eggerman and made good friends.

Lockwood should be very proud to have this nursing home.

We do have restful days. Saturday was one of them.

I was able to go to church on Sunday and what a joy it was. The children’s Christmas pro-

gram for so many kids, it was so good. The costumes were so excellent for each character. How talented some people are.

After church, Paul and Patty raked my yard leaves. I always have so many; have lots of trees.

Monday, it was a pleasure to listen to the choir from Greenfield.

Tuesday (today), we had grab bag bingo during the morning. The bags had nice goodies.

I have been told that James Schilling will be going to Atlanta for observations and treatments.

Larue is back at home following a few days at Mercy.

My good friend, Olivia Diefenderfer is moving to RCF and Vanita Barker is now a resident of RCF. I have

Happy New Year! 2015 is going to be an awesome and amazing year to be alive!

There are events happening in America and around the world that herald great and mighty discoveries, inventions and events in the next 12 months. Are you ready?

World War 3 is going to keep growing and growing (it has already started by the way) until the chaos of it will make you thankful you have lived in so much peace as long as you have.

The financial collapse of 2015 will leave you breathless to the point of panic and the 2008 recession will be thought of as good times.

Diseases, earthquakes, floods and famines will make

constant headlines in the news. Oh, they already are?

The United States of America will continue to decline and her reputation will continue to decline, because people have forsaken God! They have become a selfish people from the leaders in Washington, D.C. on down.

They have allowed satanic symbols to be placed next to nativity scenes, statues of satan next to the Ten Commandments, Muslim prayers in the National Cathedral and allowed a President stay in power that derides and wants to divide God’s nation of Israel. This President has empowered communists, socialists and the LBGT movements.

This President, congress and supreme court has defied

and shot down every move by “the people” to keep gay marriage banned and keep marriage between one man and one woman. They have also made it impossible to overturn Roe v. Wade and do federally funded abortions under Obamacare.

Yet the American government is a representative government and in God’s eyes a people that puts up with their abominations are just as guilty as the government itself.

You might be saying, “I thought you were called to bring Joy to Greenfield, Pastor Shawn!”

My reply would be, “I have!”

I preach the gospel of Jesus Christ! He has made the way and paid the price on the

cross for your sins.

I preach that the rapture of the church is imminent and that brings joy to those that are ready.

I preach that the wages of sin is death and that brings people to repentance.

At Joy Church, we house the homeless, break the bonds of sin, clothe the naked and love in word and deed. That brings joy to the “least of these” who had no hope.

I do not however preach the baptist doctrine of once saved, always saved.

I preach that Jesus Christ is alive, the Holy Spirit is powerful, annoint with oil and lay on hands for healing.

That brings joy to those that have been healed.

Tuesdays games have Greenfield #2 vs #7 Purdy and #3 Jasper playing #6 Joplin McAuley.

Crane eliminated Greenfield in sectional play last spring and Jasper upset Greenfield on 12-19-14.

Miller is minus senior, Jordan Jack, who decided not to play

basketball this season.

The Golden City boys and girls basketball tournament begins Monday, January 12 and play is every night that week.

County Farm Bureau Leaders Part of Historic Meeting

Just as members did nearly 100 years ago, leaders of the Dade County Farm Bureau attended the Missouri Farm Bureau annual meeting to discuss and approve legislative policies for the coming year.

They also took part in celebrating the centennial meeting of the state’s largest farm organization.

The occasion drew a record crowd of almost 1,500 members to TanTar-A at Lake of the Ozarks December 6-9.

The sixth annual Pennington Seed Art & Photography Competition was held the first week of December and was displayed in the Relations Consumer hallway for all employees to see.

The competition was open to Pennington Seed and Randstad employees and their immediate family members.

This year there were 24 entries in photography and 17 in art for a total of 41 entries from 21 participants.

The judges for the event were Beth Killingsworth, judging the photography and

The sign-up deadline for the LFP is January 30, 2015, for losses incurred since October 2011 through the end of 2014.

"It is easy to say that many Missouri livestock producers suffered eligible losses during the summers of 2012 and 2013," said Carriker. "The LFP can help offset those losses retroactively."

There is a $125,000 limit on payments from the LFP for each program year; payment eligibility is also restricted to individual farmers or legal entities with average adjusted gross incomes of less than $900,000.

Farmers should follow a three-step process to participate in the 201415: update, elect, and enroll. Farmers will have the opportunity to reallocate their base acreage and/or update their program crop yields prior to February 27, 2015. Once acreage and yields have been updated, farmers will have until March 31, 2015 to elect the PLC or ARC programs. Farmers will have between midApril through the summer of 2015 to enroll.

"An important aspect of the Update and Elect steps is that those decisions will last for the life of the Farm Bill, through 2018. However, farmers will have the option to enroll each year," said Carriker.

Failure to elect a program will result in a default to the PLC program for 2015 through 2018 and forfeiture of any payments for the 2014 crop.

"The 2014 Farm Bill asks producers to make some very important and difficult decisions," said Carriker, "MU Extension has partnered with the USDA FSA, Missouri Corn Growers, Missouri Soybean Growers, Missouri Farm Bureau, and FCS Financial to offer educational meetings throughout the state to help producers evaluate their options." Farmers should check with their local USDA FSA office to find out the date(s) of nearby meetings

New Farm Bill Includes New Programs For Farmers Submtted by David Burton Civic Communications Specialist

OZARK, Mo. — The 2014 Farm Bill contains provisions that many southwest Missouri farmers - crop, livestock, and dairy - should consider to help manage their risk.

The alphabet soup of farm program provisions replaces all of the direct payment crop programs with new risk management tools and offers new risk management tools to livestock and dairy producers.

"The important thing that all producers need to know is, that in some cases, if they fail to visit their USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) office and

sign up before the deadlines, they may be leaving money on the table that they may otherwise would have been eligible to receive because some of these programs are retroactive to as far back as 2011," said Dr. Gordon Carriker, University of Missouri agriculture business specialist headquartered in Christian County.

"One interesting aspect of many of the Farm Bill's new crop and livestock programs is that they perform very similar to insurance," said Carriker. "Nobody wants to receive an insurance indemnity payment that is triggered by a loss, but it is nice to know that a

safety net is there just in case. In fact, the new crop programs are commonly being referred to as safety net programs."

FOR DAIRY FARMERS The Dairy Margin Program Protection (MPP) is a voluntary program that replaces the Milk Income Loss Contract (MILC) program.

This provides income protection to dairy producers when the "margin" (difference between the all milk price and average feed cost) drops below a dollar amount (between $4 and $8 per hundred weight) chosen by the producer.

By signing up for this program and paying the $100 administrative fee, dairy producers automatically receive the Catastrophic Coverage (CAT) level of $4 margin coverage at 90 percent of their established production history. Additional protection can be purchased for increased production history (between 25 and 90 percent) coverage and the higher margin cover-

age levels (greater than $4).

The most recent deadline has passed, however dairy producers should not wait until the last minute next year to go to their FSA office because they will need to establish a production history prior to choosing a coverage level. There are some restrictions for dairy producers who are already participating in the Livestock Gross Margin for Dairy program offered through the USDA Risk Management Agency.

FOR LIVESTOCK FARMERS The Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) is a permanent provision of the 2014 Farm Bill that offers compensation to livestock producers who suffer grazing losses for covered livestock on pastureland due to drought.

Covered livestock include beef, diary, buffalo/beefalo, sheep, goats, deer, equine, swine, elk, poultry, reindeer, alpacas, emus and
