Christmas Project 2014

The Dade County Men’s Civic Club are now putting together plans for the 2014 Christmas Gift Program for the less fortunate children of Dade County. We count on the generosity of the community to help fund the cost of the gifts. You have been so kind to us the last several years and do hope that you will continue to help with this charity. There will be approximately 230 children that are in need of our help. We hope to make this a merrier Christmas for them and that some day they will remember that someone did care and that after they are grown, that they will want to ‘pay this help forward.’ Please send your donations to Don Adams, Treasurer, 35 N. State Hwy 39, Greenfield, MO 65661; Scotty Holman, President, 746 College Street, Greenfield, MO 65661; Homer G. Ellis, Vice President, P.O. Box 126, Lockwood, MO 65682 or anyone of the members. There will be drop off boxes at the Dollar General Store in Greenfield as well as at the local banks, where you can leave a new toy if that would be your choice. Thank you, one and all!

Over 70 Years of Local Probate Records Preserved By Cletis McConnell Vedette Reporter

Jennifer Snider, deputy clerk in the Dade County Circuit Clerk’s office, made contact with Leslie James, archivist from the Local Records Program with the Missouri Archives, while gathering information for writing a grant for record preservation. As a result, plans were made with the Dade County Genealogical Society to begin the task of preparing and organizing all the historic Dade County Probate Division records. The Genealogical Society volunteered to donate the labor for preservation of these documents. Volunteers from the Society Genealogical began working on this in June, 2013. They volunteered over 1400 hours to organize and prepare Dade County Historical Probate records through 1899. The project was then extended to encompass records through 1930.

Left to right: Leslie James, Field Archivist with Local Records Program; Tom Hobbs; Joan Miley; Cheryl Brewer; Betty Nelson; Edie Boucher; John Dougan, State Archivist; and John Korasick, Director of Local Records Programs.

Due to their dedication, these records will eventually be accessible at the Dade County Library, as well as at the Missouri State Archives in Jefferson City. In appreciation, the Dade County Circuit Court Clerk’s office hosted a reception in the

Circuit Courtroom of the Dade County Courthouse on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at 2 p.m. John Dougan, State Archivist, presented certificates of appreciation to the Dade County Genealogical Society members and project volunteers as follows:

Tom Hobbs, Joan Miley, Cheryl Brewer, Betty Nelson and Edie Boucher. Not present: Ardella Lack, Becky Hailey, Bonnie Mallory and Betty Crutcher. Mary McGee, Circuit Clerk, presented a plaque to the Genealogical Society for their dedication and commitment to the

A Happy, Surprised Birthday Girl Words of Lucille Franklin 90-years young

Several days before my birthday, Kaye Godfrey told me she was bringing a pot of soup and inviting some of my lady friends down for the noon meal. She came early and brought the stew, left and said they would be here around noon for the food. Close to noon and no one was here, so I waited. Soon, I saw vehicle in the driveway. Kaye and Debbie were at my door, saying, “Come on. We are going for a ride.” I hesitated and they announced the red carpet was out. Going out, there was a limousine, driven by Dan, with the ladies inside. I was told where to

Missouri Department Of Transportation Files Injunction On Illegal Junk Yard In Dade County By Bob Jackson

An injuction was filed last week in Dade County Circuit Court by the Missouri Department of Transportation against Rodney Hummell, 228 South Missouri Highway 39, Greenfield, Missouri 65661 of being in violation of several Missouri Statutes in sections 226.100 to 226.700. The property of 22 acres, more or less, is bordered on the east by the BNSF railroad and on the west by Missouri Hwy 39

and US Highway 160. The injunction states that the defendant maintains junked, dismantled and wrecked pallets, rotting lumber, used parts, steel, iron and other old scrap ferrous and non ferrous material. The operation or maintainence of a junkyard on the property bordered by MO Hwy 39 and US Hwy 160 is not licensed and is not screened by natural objects, plantings, fences or other means so as to ren-

der it not visible from the traveled highways. Said junkyard has not obtained a junkyard permit from MODOT. Said junkyard is declared a nuisanse. The defendant has been notified prior to this lawsuit and has failed to correct the violations of the law and continues to operate and / or maintain such junkyard in violation of the law. MODOT asks for a court judgment against the defendant from oper-

ating and maintaining a junkyard on the premises. A judgment ordering the defendant to remove said junk from the requested area or the defendant screen said junk from the view from the main traveled way. A judgment ordered defendant to apply for and maintain a junkyard permit from MODOT and comply with the conditions of said permit. A summons will be delivered to Rodney Hummell and a trial date

in Dade County Circuit Court will be set in 30 days. Earlier in 2014, a petition with over 350 names of Dade County, Missouri residents was submitted to MODOT to indicate the concern about the illegal dump, known to many in Dade County as THE PALLET PALACE. The VEDETTE will follow the case in court and keep VEDETTE readers up on the status of the case.

as well,” said OFH Development Director Denise Gibson. “We’ve actually granted more than one million dollars in passthrough funding—just in the past few years—to support pantries and food programs across the Ozarks by providing food, freezers, coolers and other infrastructure equipment. This gift from Walmart will help provide food for our partners.” This is the fifth annual gift from the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program that Ozarks Food Harvest has offered to its agencies as

the “Walmart Hunger Challenge” matching grant opportunity. The funds OACAC raises will be used to provide food for those in need in Dade County. Ozarks Food Harvest received grant requests from 36 of its more than 200 partner food pantries and programs, totaling $92,000. With $40,000 awarded to OFH from Walmart this fall, The Food Bank gave 33 agencies in 22 counties the opportunity to raise matching funds—ranging from $500 to $2,000—as long as they raise the funds by March 1, 2015.

Through the State Giving Program, the Walmart Foundation says it awards grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S. Previous OFH hunger challenge grants, thanks to the Walmart Foundation, have allowed Ozarks Food Harvest to award more than 150 pass-through grants utilizing gifts from Walmart totaling $475,000, leveraging the State Giving Program’s donations to more than $900,000. Ozarks Food Harvest was the first of six food bank in Missouri to grant

awards to its partner nonprofits and has been recognized nationally for being a food bank that provides funding to its partners. Any funds received by the OACAC Dade County Neighborhood Center will be used to arrange monthly access to the Ozarks Food Harvest Mobile Food Pantry for Dade County families. The cost of one food mobile visit is $1,000. If you have any questions or want to make a donation, please contact Karen Roby at 417-6372701.
