Through October 3, 2014, all students can take the GED Ready practice test for free at their local education center, located on PCCUA DeWitt and Stuttgart campuses. On Saturday, October 11th, from 1:00 to 6:00 pm, Arkansas Post Museum State Park will be the setting for an autumn celebration called “Fall Fair”. This event will be held instead of Fright Night this year. The fair will begin at 1:00 pm with face painting, carnival games with prizes, fortune telling, spell casting, bingo, treat walk, paint your own pumpkin, caramel apple making, kettle corn and

lots of trick-or-treating candy. Most activities will require tickets that can be purchased at the entrance for 25¢ each.

The Gillett Civic Group will have a concession stand during this time as well.

The museum is helped every year by some wonderful volunteers and donors.

FALL DINNER AND AUCTION Daniel Young was diagnosed with ALS in February 2014. A Dinner and auction will be held to help Daniel pay for medical expenses.

Daniel Young was diagnosed with ALS in February 2014. His symptoms started months before with weakness in his right hand and right arm. Right now, Daniel’s wife Courtney has quit her job to take care of him and their two girls, Marlie (7) and Maggie (14). Daniel is still able to work as a manager of GreenPoint Ag in Humphrey. He uses a walker as his mobility is limited.

Daniel is a 1994 graduate of Stuttgart High School. He and his family live in White Hall, Arkansas. He graduated from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro with a agriculture business degree. His family owns a farm just south of Stuttgart. He and

his dad, Tommy Welch, have also had a duck hunting guide service for a number of years.

ALS patients can accumulate medical bills of upwards of $200,000 a year. This fundraiser will help with the medical bills as well as day to day expenses.

Fatal Shooting over the weekend in DeWitt 24 year old Darren Duncan is in custody after the incident.

Darren Duncan, age 24, is in custody awaiting formal charges on a homicide that occurred Sunday night in DeWitt. The deceased is Courtney London, age 31. Prosecuting Attorney Robert Dittrich said “I will be filing charges in DeWitt on Wednesday. It will be a homicide charge of some nature, but I just received the information and am still reviewing it.” According

to Sgt. Keith Whitmore with the Arkansas State Police no other information could be released because this is an ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, a “Stop the Violence” Candlelight Vigil is being planned for tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 1 beginning at 7pm at the corner of Maxwell & Cedar Streets and proceeding to Court Square.

Gillett EHC Holds September Meeting The Gillett Extension Homemakers Club held its September meeting on Tuesday, September 16, at The Paddy in Gillett with Debbie Daniels as hostess and eight members present.

Margie Hackney, club president, called the meeting to order. Rose Ella Smith read an inspirational message based on Proverbs 27:1, reminding us to be humble and not brag about a gift we’ve given.

County Purchases New K-9 Police Dog

By Terrye Seamon Man’s best friend can be a criminal’s worst nightmare, so criminals in Arkansas County need to be on their best behavior since there will soon be a new four-legged police officer protecting citizens. Arkansas County Sheriff Allen Cheek told Quorum Court at their meeting September 9 that the county is in the process of purchasing a new K-9 police dog.

“Tia’s [the current Arkansas County K-9] been a good dog, but we’ve got to retire her,” Cheek said.

Last year the inspector told Cheek that Tia would not pass the inspection this year due to her age. Cheek said that Tia has been used in the jail and colleges, has helped find drugs and has been used in the public schools for demonstrations. “She’s done a good job,” Cheek said.

Once the new dog takes over, Cheek told Court members that Tia will remain with her current handler.

The new K-9 is currently in training and in possession of the trainer in order to build a rapport. He will undergo two weeks of training, which will focus on drug detection as well as attack and tracking training. Cheek told the Court that the new dog is doing an excellent job so far and he is very proud to have him.

Instead of the normal $7,500, the new dog will cost $5,500, which includes the cost of training. As for funding the cost of the new K-9, Cheek does not plan to use tax dollars. He has some fundraising ideas, and Arkansas County Judge Glenn “Sonny” Cox said that there is money in the jail opera-

tion fund to offset the cost.

“After we have had Tia, and I have seen how it’s worked for us, it pays off,” Cheek said.

During his report to the Court, Cheek went on to say that there are 87 adults in the Arkansas County Detention Center, 60 of whom are males and 27 are females. He also reported that the work crew has done some trash pickup, recently assisted in St. Charles and is currently working on the city hall in Stuttgart.

“Luckily, our thefts are way down because of the heat wave. Now as it cools off, you can bet it’s going to go back up,” Cheek also told the Court.

During the treasurer’s report, Arkansas County Treasurer Charles Albert Horton told the Court that the current total amount in County General, $290,352.87, is considerably down from this time last year. He went on to say though that the amount of total funds is up from 2,632,555.42 in 2013 to $2,895,103.01 this year. He attributed $148,917.30 of this increase to the half-cent sales tax. “So, there’s a real difference,” Horton said.

In other order of new business, the Quorum Court approved three ordinances amending the current budget in a couple of areas. All three ordinances approved appropriating money within the budget to fund the replacement and repair of air conditioning units at the Stuttgart county courthouse, Arkansas County Detention Center and the Arkansas County Health Department.

The minutes from the August meeting and the treasurer’s report were both approved. Several of the Gillett club’s members attended Senior Citizens’ Day at the Arkansas County Fair earlier this month, with Hackney and Daniels furnishing refreshments and assisting. Hackney reported that she earned several ribbons for the produce and canned items she entered in the fair.

Those present discussed the club’s responsibilities for the EH Fall Council meeting on Wednesday, October 29. Gillett is one of the hostesses for the potluck event.

Hackney read the helpful hint: “Put on rubber gloves to make it easier to open jars.” Ev-

eryone enjoyed the delicious refreshments provided by Daniels. Arlene Ferguson won the door prize. Thelma Connelly, Anita Trimble, and Becki Weinrich were also present.

The meeting closed with the Extension Homemaker’s Creed.

The October meeting will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, at the home of Trimble in Gillett.

Dorcas Quilters Meet The Dorcas Quilters have been working very hard to complete as many quilts as possible before shipping deadlines in early November. God has blessed the group by adding new members. There are around sixteen women in attendance on Tuesday at St. Paul Fellowship Hall at 9:00 a.m. Quilters come from around the area, as well as several different churches. The group welcomes anyone to come and be a part of their worthy endeavor.

They are especially thankful for Pastor Chad Philipp who leads their Bible Study and Pastor Jan Edwards of Gillett United Methodist Church for leading prayer after the potluck meal.

Obituary Georgia Elizabeth Bell Hudson

Georgia Elizabeth Bell Hudson, 97, of DeWitt died September 27, 2014. She was an interior designer, member of National Sorority Omega Phi Tau, Order of the Eastern Star, Officer of Rainbow Girls, WMU President and First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Daniel Hudson,

and two sisters; Octavia Merea Brown and Audrey Mae Dillion.

She is survived by one sister; Hazel Jeanette Brunson, one niece; Wygonda Brown Duke of Stuttgart.

Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, October 2nd, at First Baptist Church with Roger Dillion officiating. Cremation arrangements, by Essex Funeral Home.

Obituary Mark D. Sheppard

Mark D. Sheppard, 55, of Reydell, died Saturday, September 27, 2014.

He was born January 27, 1959 in Little Rock, son of Jack and Alene Clark Sheppard.

Mr. Sheppard was reared and received his early education in De Witt, graduating from De Witt High School.

He attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

He owned and operated Cross Bayou Farms near Reydell.

Mark was a member of De Witt Church of Christ and Hazel Street Church of Christ. He also loved farming, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife of 30 years, Elaine Warmack Sheppard, whom he married May 31, 1984

in Pine Bluff; two sons, John Sheppard (Jamie) of Bella Vista and Matthew Sheppard (Alicia) of Reydell; two brothers, Gregg Sheppard (Mary Kay) of De Witt and Jeff Sheppard of Reydell; sister, Jackie Sheppard of Little Rock; his grandchild, Lucas Sheppard; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 1, 2014 in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Mr. Joe Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Bayou Meto Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Robinson’s.

Obituary Vida June Moll

Vida June Moll, 94, died September 23, 2014, at her home.

She was born June 24, 1920, in Gillett to Frank E. and Alda Sarah Heincelman Moll.

She retired from DeWitt Bank & Trust as a bookkeeper. She loved to travel and did so extensively.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and is survived by several cousins and her

caregivers.

Visitation was held from 1:00 to 2:00 September 25 at the Gillett Methodist Church with funeral services following. Burial was in Gillett Cemetery by Essex Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Gillett Methodist Church, P.O. Box 88, Gillett, AR 72055, or the American Cancer Society.

Johnny Ray Brown, 59, of Centeridge,AR left this earth, Thursday , September 25, 2014, from injuries sustained in a one vehicle accident in Heber Springs, AR. Johnny was born October 9,1954 in Fountain Hill, AR. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and friend to many.

He is preceeded in death by his father John Earl Brown.

Kimberly Ann Dollar Ellis

Kimberly Ann Dollar Ellis was born on 1112-1958 in Hot Springs, AR. On the morning of 9-16-2014, Kim’s short life on earth gave way to an everlasting life with her Heavenly Father. Kim was a loving, compassionate Christian, mother, daughter, sister, and friend.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Cravens; father, Bill Dollar; sister, Diane Dollar; and dog, Lucy. Kim is survived by her step mother, Shirley Dollar; sisters, Julie Wright, Heather Wright, and Lori Sierra; brothers, Robert Cravens and Clay Dollar; daughter, Cortney Ellis; son, Trent Ellis; and dog, Lucy #2. A Memorial was held at

the Woodlands Church in Fort Smith on Saturday, September 20th at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Humane Society of Sebastian County on Kim’s behalf. Kim would ask that friends and family not mourn her death, but celebrate her beautiful life and new home.

Humprey Makes Plans For Fall Festival The City of Humphrey is making plans for it’s Annual Fall Festival to be held Saturday, October 25, 2014, from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. “This event and the Annual Christmas Parade are the only two really community events we have in Humphrey, stated Mayor Alice Black. The people of this community, and the surrounding areas enjoy the festival so much. They start asking me about when it’s going to be, in July.

It’s almost a reunion for

some people, they come back every year, said Black. This year we will have games for all ages, and great food, fun, and fellowship. The Bayou Meto Band will provide the music, which adds a festive atmosphere to the festival, said Black.

L.A. Black Building on National Register of Historical Places

By Terrye Seamon Nothing lasts forever, and even buildings need facelifts every now and then, especially if they were built in 1942. Rick Duffield, president of L. A. Black Rice Milling Association, Inc., and the featured speaker at the Chamber of Commerce meeting September 18 at PCCUA DeWitt Campus, shared his journey of restoring the L.A. Black office building, which was just completed last spring.

“There hadn’t been a whole lot done to this office through the years,” Duffield said, who came to work for Black, Inc., in 1999. The building, which is located on Monroe Street behind Cormier Rice Mill, was built in 1942 by L.A. Black, who was a rice farmer, a business owner and president of DeWitt’s First National Bank.

Normal wear and tear over time began to take its toll on the building.

“We had to make a decision as to whether or not we were going to build a new office or renovate this one,” Duffield said.

After a lot of careful thought and consideration, an engineer was brought in to inspect the original building. After determining that it was structurally sound, Gary Clements, an architect in North Little Rock who has experience in renovating historical buildings, came in and helped Duffield start the application process for placing the building on the national historic register.

“It was a long, lengthy process,” Duffield said.

They actually started the project in 2011, and in January of 2012, the Arkansas Department of Heritage determined that it could be nominated for the historic register.

Duffield said that one thing he found out during this process is that the building had to be more than just old. The

building itself had to have some historical significance to the local area. “Because of Mr. Black and the things he had done in this area, and the history with that, we were able to get it on the historical register. It took about a year from that first site visit,” Duffield said.

About a year ago the company had to move everything out of the building and rent a temporary office building for six months so construction work could begin.

“The move out was very difficult because there were years and years and years of records. We had to decide what we were going to keep and what we weren’t going to keep,” Duffield said. “One of the main things we did was repointing all of the brick. The mortar of the original brick was beginning to disintegrate.” He explained that repointing involved drilling out all of the original mortar and remortaring the original brick.

“One of the things they really want you to do is to try to get it back to the original look. We didn’t have any pictures, so we just had to go with what our architect thought it looked like.”

He explained that the light fixtures are more appropriate to the time period in which the building was built because they did not know what the original fixtures actually looked like.

“They did allow us to

change a little bit of the floor plan of the building,” Duffield said, which included redoing the kitchen area. The project also included other major renovations such as a new roof, floor, and completely overhauling the electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling systems. “It was pretty amazing what they did,” Duffield replied.

The contract with the construction company, Hydco, Inc., in Little Rock, stipulated that the work had to be completed within six months, and it was. Once the historical status was approved by the state, the project had to be approved by the Department of the Interior. The construction was finished in March,

on the other side. He also had two vaults; one on each side for each business in order to keep everything separate. Duffield said they retained the design of the building that way.

Also discussed at the Chamber meeting was surveying the road between Webb’s Sporting Goods and A1 Exxon in order to start constructing a connecting road through to the DeWitt City Park.

Darren Caldwell, administrator of DeWitt Hospital and Nursing Home, will be named “Hospital Administrator of the Year” October 9 by the Arkansas Hospital Association. Caldwell previously won “Young Administrator of the Year” 20 years ago.

Other topics brought up for discussion were PCCUA’s declining enrollment this semester, and due to lack of interest, there will not be a Christmas parade this year.

The DeWitt Chamber of Commerce meets at noon the third Thursday of every month at PCCUA DeWitt Campus.

and Duffield and his staff moved back in the office in April.

Duffield said the whole process of restoration was interesting. “It was really kind of neat because you could see how the building was originally built.” While renovating the plumbing system and making one of the bathrooms handicap accessible, a duct was discovered in the foundation of the structure where heat was originally pumped through to heat the building.

Another interesting tidbit Duffield learned came when some of the original paneling had to be replaced. He said it took the contractor a while to figure out what kind of wood it was. Finally, the contractor determined it was sweet gum, and they were able to replace it. Duffield said that since the building was built during the war, Black probably had to use something that was readily available and locally milled at the time.

Arkansas County Youth to Celebrate National 4-H Week October 5-11 More than 6 million young people across the country today will celebrate National 4-H Week, an annual celebration of 4-H during the first full week of October. During the month of October, Arkansas County 4-H will showcase the great things that 4-H offers young people and highlight the incredible 4-H youth in the community who work each day to make a positive impact on the community.

Research has proven that participation in 4-H has a significant positive impact on young people. Recent findings from the Tufts University 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development indicate that, when compared to their peers, young people in 4-H are: Nearly four times more likely to contribute to their communities, Two times more likely to pursue healthy be-

haviors like, and Two times more likely to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs in the out-ofschool time.

In Arkansas County, more than 100 4-H youth and 40 volunteers from the community are involved in 4H. 4-H, the nation’s largest youth development and empowerment organization, cultivates confident kids who tackle the issues that matter most in their communities right now. In the United States, 4-H programs empower six million young people through the 109 land-grant universities and Cooperative Extension in more than 3,000 local offices serving every county and parish in the country. Outside the United States, independent, country-led 4-H organizations empower one million young people in more than 50 countries.

the private sector, nonprofit partner of the Cooperative Extension System and 4-H National Headquarters located at the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The issue of alcohol sales in Arkansas has been highly debated dating back to the days when we were still a territory. And this election day, Arkansas voters will be asked to weigh in again on this debate.

Issue 4 is a citizen-led initiative which will appear on the November ballot. It is titled “The Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Amendment” and would amend the Arkansas Constitution by declaring the manufacture, sale, distribution, and transportation of intoxicating liquors to be lawful within the entire geographic area of each and every county of the State.

After the end of prohibition, the sale of al-

cohol was permitted in all counties. Then in 1935 a state law mandated that in order to hold an election on the matter, a petition had to be signed by at least 35% of a county’s electorate. In 1942, Arkansas voters adopted Initiated Act 1, which lowered the threshold to 15%. That threshold was changed several times over the years by the legislature and now stands at 38% of registered voters in a county.

Currently, 37 of Arkansas’s 75 counties are dry. And in a few of the counties which do permit alcohol sales, there are cities and townships within that county that have voted to remain dry. Issue 4 would not

permit any municipality or county to prohibit the sale of alcohol.

A legal challenge to this amendment has been filed with the Arkansas State Supreme Court. Justices are scheduled to hear oral arguments on this case October 9.

As with other ballot initiatives we have discussed this year, we encourage you to research the issue yourself and make an informed opinion at the polls.

And as a reminder, the last day to register to vote for the November election is October 6th.

Carl Lamb Places 3rd in Duck Calling Competition

Carl Lamb, 34 of Dewitt, placed 3rd place in all 4 duck calling competitions held in Stuttgart, AR over the weekend.

Carl has been blowing a duck call all his life, but has been calling in competitions for the past 10 years. Carl started in last place, but has taught himself how to competition call and has come so far. His wife Leslee and 2 kids Carson & Camree are so proud of him.

blew in the Arkansas State Duck Calling Competition and the Cache River Regional Competition and placed 3rd in both. Carl also blew in the Mack’s Prairie Wings Regional Competition and the Ducks Unlimited Regional Competition on Saturday and placed 3rd in both of them.

These contest are held in Stuttgart every year along with many others through out the state and world. If you win a sanc-

tioned regional contest it will qualify you to blow in the World’s Duck Calling Competition that is held in Stuttgart, AR every November. Carl has placed in the top 5 in several contests in the past 2 years and has won a few open contests, but has yet to win a sanctioned contest. Carl blows an Echo duck call & he is hoping to be able to compete in the World’s Contest one day!!

Band of Brothers To Host “Taking a Stand for Hunger”

Band of Brothers is a small men’s group here in southern Arkansas County. It’s made up of men interested in furthering their relationship with Jesus Christ.

The focus of this group is helping to grow Godly husbands and fathers for the sake of His Kingdom. This is mostly accomplished through biweekly meetings focused on the Bible and on the personal testimonies of the men involved.

Band of Brothers is hosting a unique event on Saturday, October 11 at Wilco Flying Service.

The name of the event is

“Taking a Stand for Hunger”. They will be taking deer donations from 10am that morning until about 8pm that night.

Hunters will be able to bring deer in for donation. The deer will be checked and cleaned at that time, then processed at Half Moon Deer Processing. All of the meat will then be donated to the Caring and Sharing Food Pantry in DeWitt.

There will be absolutely no charge to the hunter.

October 11 is the opening morning of the Modern Gun Doe Season. It is a perfect reason to do some herd manage-

ment early in the season.

It is also a perfect time of year to take a kid hunting before the weather gets so cold.

There will be several benefits of this event, the best one is local people focusing on a local cause.

Betrayed

Psalm 41 and Psalm 55 are written by David.

Each describes a time when David was betrayed by a close personal friend. Each records great pain and anguish in the heart and mind of David. Jesus quotes Psalm 41:9 in John 13:18 and applies it to Himself. I think it is a very helpful exercise to compare and contrast David’s situation with that of Jesus. Second Samuel 11-16 gives the background for Psalms 41 and 55. This same passage enables us to compare and contrast David’s experience with that of Jesus. David is certainly a type (foreshadowing) of Jesus in many ways.

Sometimes, how David is like Jesus helps us to see Jesus. Sometimes, it is how David is different that helps us to see Jesus.

Either way, the goal is to see our Savior.

Ahithophel was a close personal friend of David. He was in fact counselor to King David.

Second Samuel 16:23 says that all of the advice given by Ahithophel was regarded as coming from God Himself.

That is high praise indeed! Ahithophel was the father of Eliam, one of David’s thirty-seven Mighty Men. In other words, Eliam was one of David’s personal bodyguards. Perhaps only Jonathon, son of Saul, was closer to David than Ahithophel. This makes Ahithophel’s treachery that much more heinous. Ahithophel counseled Absalom, David’s son who led a rebellion against him, to sleep with David’s wives in public view. Later, Ahithophel requested twelve thousand troops to hunt David down at which time Ahithophel vowed he would personally kill David. The first counsel was carried out, but David prayed and God thwarted the second plan. Ahithophel then committed suicide. As far as I can tell, the suicides of David’s betrayer and Jesus’ betrayer are the only two suicides in the Bible except for those

connected with war. Furthermore, Jesus in John 13 explicitly connected His betrayer, Judas, with Ahithophel by applying Psalm 41:9 to Himself.

We can get a glimpse of Jesus by seeing how He was like David. We get a much better look at Jesus by seeing how he was different from David.

It is easy to see why Athithophel hated David.

David violated Athithophel’s granddaughter Bathsheba. David murdered Ahithophel’s grandsonin-law, Uriah. In fact, in Psalm 41:4 David acknowledged his sin and guilt. At least in some sense, David deserved to be betrayed. Jesus was absolutely sinless and guilt-free. A guilty person who deserves to be betrayed will experience pain and hurt because of the betrayal. However, I suspect that an innocent person who is betrayed will experience a great deal more pain and hurt. A careful reading of Psalm 41, Psalm 55, and John 13 reveals another significant difference between David and Jesus. David hurt for David. Jesus hurt for Judas. David even prayed in Psalm 41:10 that God would restore him to power so that he could take revenge on his betrayer. Jesus called Judas friend when he arrived at the garden to finish the betrayal. From the cross, Jesus prayed “Father, forgive them”. This contrast with David reveals a marvelous truth about God the Son. First, let us be clear that Judas was not Jesus’ only betrayer. You and I also betray Jesus.

Perhaps our betrayals are not as open but they are betrayals nonetheless.

When we betray Jesus, He hurts not because of pain we inflict on Him but He hurts for what it will do to us. Jesus is “the Friend who loves at all times”. He continues to love even when we betray Him. He will punish us, but that is not His goal.

Prairie Gems EH Meet

The Prairie Gems EH members met on Sept 17 at the Extension Office.

Members discussed how we are influenced when shopping “Because I Saw It on TV” with Shirley Jackson leading the discussion. It was noted how young children are especially affected when choosing cereals and snacks based on tv commercials.

President Alta Lockley conducted the business meeting. Six members were present and answered roll call by naming what product is their favorite TV commercial.

Gladys Hearn gave an inspirational devotional on Love with Sandra Webb leading in prayer.

Lockley reported the club’s educational booth had been chosen Sweepstakes at the County Fair and will advance to the SE District Fair the week of September 28.

The club agreed to bake cookies for the Children’s Farm Safety Day on October 7.

Members discussed plans for Fall Council Meeting. The club will assist with food preparations and provide a door prize.

Delta District EH Presidents’ Day will be held in Brinkley on October 23. Hearn volunteered to provide one of the county’s silent auction items. Members will also assist with providing

“On Making A Difference”

“What’s in your dash?”

Some time ago I received an email with that question in the subject line and wondered what it was talking about. At first, I thought it was talking about the dashboard in my car; yet, after reading the message I realized there was more to it than that.

It was referring to the dash between the birthdate and death date on your tombstone—you know, that hyphen between the two dates listed there.

And, suddenly, I realized this was a pretty profound question.

You see, there are a lot of folks who go through their entire lives. . .whiling away the time. . .engaged in trivia pursuit. . .but never do anything of any lasting nature.

They’re basically taking up space, breathing air, paying taxes, trying to “grab for all the gusto they can get.”

But, theirs is basically a self-centered, self-indulgent life.

And, when they’re gone, they’ll soon be forgotten—b ecause they never made a difference. It’s like they never lived at all.

Now, that doesn’t mean we’ve all got to be rocket scientists, win the Academy Award or Nobel Peace Prize to keep that from happening. In fact, most of us will likely never be named “Most Likely to Succeed” by anyone.

However, even if our names never appear in lights or on someone’s RSVP list, we still can make a difference.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine was walking across the parking lot, holding a red crate in his arms. I hollered and asked him what he had in the box. So, he came over to where I was PAGE TWO standing, sat the box down—which was filled with towels and light blankets—and said “Here, take a look.”

Slowly, he pulled the cloths out and there in the bottom was a tiny kitten. Its eyes had probably only been open for around 7-10 days. As he picked the adorable creature up, he held it close and stroked its head with his chin, just like a doting parent would.

Then, he told me how he acquired the cat and why he had it with him on the way to his office.

Seems that a few days before he and a buddy were in a parking lot and as they got out of their car, they heard this faint crying sound. They stopped and listened more acutely and realized it was coming from the bed of the pickup truck next to them.

And, what they saw shocked them.

There, in the back of the truck was this little black kitten, a rope tied around its neck and attached to a rock. They could tell from its cry and appearance that it was very weak. And, they knew that it wouldn’t live long in that condition, especially since it was over 90 degrees that day.

Suddenly, it dawned on them that the owner of the truck was probably going to find a creek somewhere and throw the small, defenseless kitten over the bridge railing to get rid of it.

But, these two motorcycle riding, hard-asnails veterans weren’t about to let that happen.

They rescued the kitten from the truck bed and my friend said “I’ll take him home with me,” which he did. Not only that, he took it to a local veterinarian, had him examine it and give it its shots.

Then, he went home, fed it a small bottle of warm milk and made it a bed. And, he was bringing it to work to take care of it through the day since there was no one back home to do it.

PAGE THREE Needless to say, I was touched by this act of mercy—especially coming from someone you’d least expect to act that way.

But, he said, “You know, I couldn’t just leave it there to die. I had to do something to rescue it.”

So, he did.

To some, that might not seem noteworthy; but, I’ve got to believe the small kitten would say “Thank you” if he could. Why is that? Simply because my friend made a difference in its life.

Dear Reader, someone once said “Little is much when God is in it.” Whose life can you touch today—even in a small way—by showing them a little kindness? It may not seem much to you or others, but never underestimate what God can do with what you do in His Name.

Here’s praying you’ll make a difference in someone’s life today. They may not say “Thank you,” but God will take note and be pleased. God bless you.

By Terrye Seamon Republican congressional hopeful Tom Cotton spoke to constituents at The Bull Pen Wednesday, September 24. Cotton visited with everyone while they enjoyed a chicken and fish buffet.

During his speech, Cotton urged supporters to vote for him in the upcoming congressional election November 4. “If you will stand for me the next six weeks, I will stand for you, and I will stand for Arkansas in the U.S. Senate for the next six years,” Cotton told voters.

Common Sense And Divine Healing By. C.W. Wood Is it always God’s Will to heal when we believe, or not? If it is not His Will, then we needs to stop praying for His People. What does His Word say? Who are His People? Jesus asked the question, “Who is my mother?”

Matt. 12:47-50, “Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.

48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? And who are my brethren?

49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren.

50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Healing from Jesus Christ, our Creator, for our physical bodies, is a priceless blessing that is ignored by the world, generally speaking! This is understandable that the lost world is blind to God’s great desire to heal people, but it is much harder to understand when those in the churches also fail to see this glorious and lifesaving truth!

Having studied the scriptures for forty-five years concerning God’s Will to heal all who will simply believe He wants to, and having studied the ministry of men like Br. William Branham, F.F. Bosworth, John A. Dowie, John G. Lake, E.W. Kenyon, A.A. Allen, Oral Roberts, and others, I would like to set forth some facts that I pray will win some over to God’s side in the matter. In this sermon, I will be remembering that there are also people who are in what we call the End-Time Message who are in desperate need of God’s Divine Healing.

No one ever preached Divine Healing anymore clearly and positive than Br. William Branham.

We will be repeating some things that he said, as well as what some of the other men we mentioned preached about it. The great need that we see all around us, and in myself, also, has prompted this review.

One of the greatest hindrances to faith in Christ for healing, is

the wrong teaching that God is the author of disease, and that He wills the sickness of some of His worshipers! This is a tradition of men that even some of those who preach Divine Healing have had wrong.

The truth, as this writer sees it, is that God is the Controller of all sickness, just as He is the Controller of all that He has created. But, He does not send sickness on us, not only does He not send it on us, but He clearly tells us to resist it when it comes and do not receive it. When it comes, He tells us to pray for each other and get rid of it, and believe He wants us well! We know that our Lord uses sickness in His dealing with us, just as He uses all that the Devil does, and turns it around so that it makes “wrath to praise Him.” Ps. 76:10, “Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee, the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain (stop).”

But to say, or teach and preach, that God wants His Children to be sick is to sadly misconstrue His Word.

Acts 10:38, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the Devil; for God was with Him.” If this was the only scripture we had, we should know that Jesus Christ was not going around doing something that God didn’t want to be done! For three years, Jesus went about healing all that were oppressed by the Devil, or that is all that come to Him and asked for it. The Scripture in Acts 10:38 tells us why He did that, and by what authority! It says clearly, “For God was with Him.”! God was in it. God was anointing Him to do it. It was God’s Will and God’s loving, merciful Plan!

If God wanted us to be sick sometimes, why did He tell us to “Confess our faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed.”? (James 5:16) Did God tell us to pray for something that is not His Will to do? Surely not! He said, “Pray that my will be done and I will hear and answer.”

Our Father, knowing we would get sick at times because of our disobedience which causes

doubts, fear, and unbelief, told us to bring our problems to Him and ask for mercy. He will show us mercy, forgive our sins, and heal our bodies and our minds and soul. Then, He says, “Go and sin no more lest a worse thing come on you.” (John 5:14) He told us to “resist the Devil (that brings sickness) and he will flee from us.”

(James 4:7) But if we let him in and make him welcome with our testimony, he will build a nest in us.

If sickness is God’s Will for His Children, then Jesus was a Law breaker, for He went about healing all that were oppressed of the devil! If sickness is God’s Will for His worshippers, then every doctor and every nurse is a Law breaker because they are working against God’s Will. If it is God’s Will for us to be sick, then every hospital is a place of rebellion against God’s plan to make us sick! If God wants us to be sick sometimes, then it’s a sin to want to be well and pray to be well because we are to pray for the Will of God to be done in our lives.

Here is another tradition of men we need to address. Some say we glorify God more by remaining sick and being patient about it than we can by being healed and up about His business. Now, hear God’s balance. We are to be patient when a sickness comes on us, but never to the point of believing that God wants us to be that way. We know some that teach that we glorify God by staying sick more than by being healed.

Let’s examine that teaching by the Word (We have that teaching in churches in DeWitt.)

If this teaching is true, then Jesus robbed God of all the glory He could, because He healed those who came believing!

Also, the Holy Ghost that was working did not hesitate to rob God of all the glory He could in Acts 5:15-16, “Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.

16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were

healed everyone.”

Here the Holy Ghost (Jesus) healed all (everyone) that was brought into the streets of Jerusalem so that all who had been made sick by the devil (vexed with unclean spirits) were healed. God gets glory when the world sees His healing power raising people up, not by casting them down. In Acts 28:9 where Paul prayed and God healed all the sick on the Island of Melita, he was doing contrary to God’s Will (that is if God wanted some of them to stay sick). Friends, if we don’t get well, it is never God’s fault, something is wrong down here or else the Lord is testing our faith. It is wrong to suppose that it is not God’s Will to heal all who need it!

Let’s apply some Holy Ghost enlightened horse-sense to that teaching. Truth is, God will heal anyone that will simply believe it. If it is only God’s Will to heal some that are sick, then how do we know that we are in the group that He wants to heal?

No! It is for everybody that will believe it! We do not need a special, personal revelation from the Holy Ghost to know that God will heal anyone that will believe it. Why not? Why don’t we have to have a personal revelation that God wants to heal William Wood? Because we have already been told in His Word that He does! Are we suppose to close our Bibles and wait for a special revelation that God wants all to be in health? (See III John 1:2) No! We are duty bound to read the Bible which is His Will and Plan, and there we see where He healed them all that would believe.

To say that God does not want to heal everyone that needs it, is like saying that He does not want to save everyone that’s lost! Of course, He knows who will come to Him believing for healing, and who won’t believe it. Of course, He knows who will come to Him for salvation believing and who won’t come. But that does never change His written Word that says healing and salvation is for all! If healing was not paid for (for all), how did the multitudes in the Bible get from God what He didn’t want them to have? Does the scripture say that Jesus was

a respecter of persons?

No! It says He was not partial to any but loved us all and would not that any be lost!

Ezekiel 33:11, “Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die O house of Israel?”

Matthew 4:23, “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching and preaching the Gospel, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.”

Matthew 9:35, “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages teaching and preaching and healing every sickness and every disease.”

Matthew 12:15, “But when Jesus knew it, He withdrew Himself from thence and great multitudes followed Him and He healed them all.”

Matthew 14:14, “And Jesus went forth and saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion toward them and healed their sick.”

Matthew 14:24-36, “……they sent out into all that country round about and brought unto Him all that were diseased….and as many as touched Him were made perfectly whole.”

Luke 6:17-19, “And a great multitude of people out of all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; and they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.”

In these scriptures, and many more, we see that they brought all that were sick and Jesus healed them all! Were all these multitudes of people out of the cities and villages Christians?

No! He said to some, “Go and sin no more lest a worse thing come on you.” The sick and the lost just heard that there was a man passing through that was healing all kind of sickness and all kinds of disease and they came to check it out. When they saw it, they went to Him and got what they needed also! Didn’t we see in the ministry of our Prophet that same Jesus heal everyone in the prayer

lines that would believe He wanted to? Don’t we believe that he has not changed? He is the same yesterday, today, and forever! Then, who has changed? We have.

We have failed to believe like we should in His never changing promises. And look around us, we are paying a terrible price for it, but it is not our Lord’s fault. He is knocking on the hearts door, and asking to be let in, but the door latch to the heart is on the inside. He does not come in with His revealed, life-saving Word until we open the door. Do we want to get well physically? Then turn our lives over to Him all the way! Walk in the Light.

Repent when we fail and keep walking. There is no other formula! This is it, take it or leave it. It’s up to us and it’s up to the people we pray for. They have to believe it with us. Scripture says, “If any two of you will come to Him and believe.” The Elder and sick person both believing!

In closing, we will make this all important point again. It is not God’s Will for His Children to be sick. Jesus said in Matthew 15:26, “Healing is the Children’s bread.”

Come and dine, the table is spread! We now have a full seven course meal spread out before us. The Seven Seals are open. But although the spiritual food is on the table, we have to go to the table, take it on our plate and get it down in our soul.

God does not put sickness on His People.

He allows what we allow.

It shall be unto us according to our individual faith (Matthew 9:29).

Do you believe the Lord wants you sick sometimes? You can have it!

Do you believe He wants to make you well from every disease that comes to you? You can have your healing! The scriptures says of Jesus, that He came to do the Father’s Will (John 4:34), then was not the healing of all that came to Him believing, the Will of the Father for their bodies, and for ours, since He changes not?

I John 3:8 says that, “Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil.”

Certainly it is a finished work for all who will believe it. Look up and be healed Bride of Christ!

On Sunday, September 28, I found out what an awesome Fire Department we have in DeWitt. Our neighbor’s house caught fire while they were out eating after Church. The fire trucks got there, and every one of the firemen worked their tails off to save the house. The house was a total loss, but no lives were in danger. I think we the citizens of DeWitt are so very luck to have these guys looking out after our homes.

JRMC Joins Greater Delta Alliance

Jefferson Regional Medical Center (JRMC) in Pine Bluff has recently joined the Greater Delta Alliance for Health (GDAH). The GDAH is a coalition of Southeast Arkansas hospitals that collaborate to improve access to care and improve delivery of healthcare services in the Arkansas Delta.

Goals include improving healthcare provider edu-

cational opportunities, improving health information technology, promoting healthy lifestyles, providing consumer assistance programs, and reducing service and operational costs for hospital members through collaborative programs and purchasing. “We are very excited to collaborate with other Southeast Arkansas hospitals to improve healthcare

Senior High Dragon Homecoming Game Junior High Dragon Game

By Dawn Teer The DeWitt Dragons hosted the Hamburg Lions for their Homecoming game on September 26. DeWitt chose to receive the ball on the kickoff. The Dragons had to punt after they were unable to make a first down and the Lions returned the punt for a touchdown.

Score: Hamburg 7, DeWitt 0.

The Dragons started off marching down the field. On 3rd and 7 Hamburg called a time out.

A false start against the Dragons moving them back to the 23 yard line and bringing up 3rd and 13. On 4th and 13 on the 27 yard line Dragons turn the ball over on down to the Lions.

Hamburg took over making progress against the Dragons defense.

They were able to drive the ball down to the Dragon 35 yard line. The Lions were facing 3rd and 8 at the DeWitt 34 yard line and after a completed pass to Deandre Rochell who broke a tackle and ran to the end zone for another touchdown. The point after had a low snap it was ran for a two point conversion which was good. Score: Hamburg 15, DeWitt 0.

Tavius Fowler returned the ball on the kickoff.

Dragons started at the 25 yard line, Charles Dabner picked up 1 yard. No gain on the next play brought up 3rd down, Rieves pass was incomplete.

against Hamburg moved the ball back to the Dragon 44 yard line. Savage’s pass is intercepted by Dayne Van Camp. With 28 seconds left the ball is on the 16 yard line. The end of the first quarter Lions 15, DeWitt 0.

The second quarter starts with Charles Dabner rushing for a first down. On 2nd and 9 Dragons call a time out.

Dragons get to the 36 yard line bringing up 3rd and 1. Dabner over the right side loses about a half yard bringing up 4th down and 1 and a half yards. Jake Rieves takes the ball up the middle for the 1st down. From the 39 yard line Dragons receive a 5 yard penalty for illegal procedure. A bad snap causes a loss on the play backing them up to the 31 yard line. After 3rd and 18 Rieves pass to Dayne Van Camp is completed a fumble recovered

by Jamari Gamble, bringing up 4th and 11. Dragons punt the ball to the Lions. Lions take over on the 20 yard line.

Trey Miller gets a 1st down at the Dragons 46 yard line on a wide receiver sweep. Dragons defense is unable to hold the Lions back. A holding penalty against the Lions pushes them back to the 39 yard line. On 1st and 17 Lions gain 15 yards. Savage keeps the ball and is able to get a Lion 1st down. Lions are on the 24 yard line of the Dragons. Several flags are thrown on the next play.

Dragons offense is unable to capitalize and have to punt the ball. Lions take over on the Lions 48 yard line. Savage goes back to pass and is intercepted by Tavius Fowler of the Dragons. The Dragons take over at 22 yard line. A sack to Jake Rieves brings a loss and a fumble. Lions take over and run for a touchdown.

The extra point is good.

Score: Hamburg 22, DeWitt 0.

The Dragons get to the Lions 31 yard line. On 2nd and 10 Rieves keeps the ball for about a yard.

With 1:06 to go Rieves keeps it and makes the 1st down. Dragons are down to the 12 yard line and call a time out. On 2nd and 10 Rieves is unable to complete a pass brings up 3rd and 10 with only seconds left in the half. A fumble on the play recovered by the Lions ends the first half.

The second half begins with the Lions receiving the ball. Lorenzo Watkins returns the ball to the 32 yard line. Deondre Rochelle runs the ball for another Lion touchdown. The point after is good. Score: Hamburg 29, Dragons 0.

The kickoff return is returned by Charles Dabner to the 32 yard line. Rieves pass is complete to Jamari Gamble for a 3 yard gain.

The Lions defense is able to just shut down the Dragon offense. Rieves is sacked for another fumble recovered by the Lions.

Lions take over on the Dragon 30 yard line. An injured play for the Lions brings a timeout. Play resumes with a penalty

for false start against the Lions. 2nd down and 16 and Savage completes a pass to Rochelle who is pushed out after he gets a first down. 1st and goal at the Dragon 9 yard line.

Savage keeps the ball and runs it in for a touchdown. The point after is good. Score: Hamburg 36, Dragons 0.

The kickoff is kicked out of bounds, bringing a flag on the play. Ball is marked at the 35 yard line where Dragons take over. Rieves completes a pass to Dayne Van Camp for a pickup of 3. Rieves throws an interception to Grant Smith of the Lions who returns it to the 28 yard line of the Dragons.

The mercy rule is in effect now and the clock will not stop. Savage’s pass to Rochelle is knocked down

by Trace Bounds. Savage keeps the ball and carries it for a Lion first down.

On 2nd and 7 at the 12 yard line Savage pass to Rochelle is complete for a Lion touchdown. The point after is good. Score: Hamburg 43, DeWitt 0.

The 4th quarter begins with the Dragons starting to move the ball until an incomplete pass to Van Camp brings up 4th down. The ball is punted to the Lions who take over at the Lion 32 yard line. They move it to the 15 yard line and then a Lion touchdown by E.J. Holmes. The extra point is good. Score: Hamburg 50, DeWitt 0. The clock is allowed to run out.

The Dragons have got to start working together as a team and not just as several individuals playing separately. They seem to spend a lot of time attempting to figure out what play they are running. The last two games seem to have had a lot of penalties, some of which are due to the players not knowing what the plays are, it would seem. The game they played against Carlisle shows they can score and they can win.

They have got to shake the last two losses off and begin to focus. Several times at the last two games it almost appeared as if some of them were afraid to lower that head and tackle or block their opponents.

The opponents are not going to just roll over for them. They have several good players but until they work together it’s not going to matter how great these players are. Football is a team sport and must be played that way.

Hit of the Week

By Dawn Teer The Jr. High DeWitt Dragons traveled to Hamburg Thursday, September 25 to play the Hamburg Lions.

The game began with Hamburg kicking off to DeWitt. Kyran Amos returned the kickoff.

After three short runs and a holding penalty against the Dragons a pass to Jacob Boyd was complete, but he was unable to get enough yardage for a first down.

The kickoff was returned by the Lions Anderson Williams with Kyran Amos on the stop. The next play brought a holding penalty against the Lions. A deep pass was attempted and the Dragons Jake Hackney intercepted the pass on the 1 yard line of the Dragons. The Jr. Dragons made a valiant effort to move the ball back down the field but were unable to capitalize on the interception and turned the ball back over to the Lions on downs. The Lions took over the ball and two plays later made a touchdown. The point after was good. Score: Hamburg 7, Dragons 0.

The kickoff return brought a fumble but it was recovered by Amos. It was 1st down and 10 on the DeWitt 34 yard line. Before the Dragons could get going a fumble recovered by Hamburg and returned for a touchdown. The point after was no good, this brought the score to Hamburg 13, Dragons 0.

Once again the Dragons tried moving the ball down the field only to have another fumble that Hamburg recovered.

Dragons made it to the 23 yard line before the half ended.

Hamburg received the ball beginning the second half. On the first play after the return a chuck block was called against the Lions backing them up 5 yards. Quarterback Brannon completed a pass to Cameron Johnson for another Lion touchdown. The point after was good. Score:

Hamburg 20, DeWitt 0.

The Dragons came back fighting but after another Dragon fumble Hamburg had the ball. Another completed pass to Cameron Johnson resulted in another Hamburg touchdown. The point after was no good.

Score: Hamburg 26, DeWitt 0.

A penalty for roughing the passer was enforced on the return and once again the Dragons had the ball.

The Dragon offense was not a match against the Hamburg defensive line and could not move the ball down the field. A carry from Boyd was not enough for a first down and the ball was turned over on downs.

After a run by Hamburg’s Harris was stopped by Jacob Boyd, the next play resulted in a touchdown for Hamburg. The point after was no good.

Score: Hamburg 32, DeWitt 0.

This week the Dragons will host Dollarway at Dragon Stadium. The 7th grade Dragons will play at 5:30 and Jr. Dragons will play at 7:00.

This is what Coach Drew Horton had to say, “I thought that the Jr High was improved last week in their game against Hamburg. Offensively we’ve had a few chances but shot ourselves in the foot.

Defensively we made a few plays. Jack Hackney intercepted a ball early. We have to be able to tackle better and to take better angles to get to the ball carrier.

This week we have Dollarway. They are always very athletic.

Offensively we want to work on ball security and eliminating mistakes that will prevent us from getting into the endzone. Defensively we are gonna work on being better tacklers and taking better angles.”

Josh Dabner rushed for a 7 yard touchdown. Damarian Gibson scored on a 60 yard touchdown pass.
