DeWitt Native Begins Peace Corps Service in Ghana Sessely McCarty, 24, of DeWitt, Ark., has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Ghana Sept. 10 to begin training as an Agriculture and Forestry Extension Volunteer. McCarty will live and work at the community level to make a difference by promoting improved agricultural production practices and working with farmers to improve local business practices. “I have been active in mission work through my hometown church New Life Fellowship of DeWitt,” said McCarty. “We did mission work into Mexico several times and previous mission trip to Africa during college. I enjoying serving and helping others.” McCarty is the daughter of Tim and Rochelle McCarty and a graduate of DeWitt High School. She also attended University of Arkansas at

Little Rock where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 2011. “I attended Southern Arkansas University my freshman and sophomore year where I was a member of SAU Baptist Student Union,” said McCarty. “I was part of a mission team that traveled to Africa. I loved it there and have always wanted to return and serve the people there.” During the first three months of her service, McCarty will live with a host family in Ghana to learn the local language and integrate into the local culture. After acquiring the language and cultural skills that will help her make a lasting difference, McCarty will be sworn into service and assigned to a community in Ghana where she will serve for two years. tablish and maintain soil and water conservation structures and practices, develop gardening and nutrition education, support agricultural organizations, promote better business practices, and add value to agricultural products to increase incomes and improve food security. She will work in cooperation with the local community and partner organizations and develop leadership, technical and cross-cultural skills that will give her a competitive edge when she returns home. Peace Corps Volunteers return from service as global citizens well-positioned for professional opportunities in today’s global job market. McCarty also plans to share her Peace Corps experience with neighbors at home while she is serving. “I am partnering with Kristi McCaslin, a social studies teacher at Sheridan Middle School in Sheridan Ark., through the World Wise Schools program,” said McCarty. “I will be able to correspond with her class for the two years I serve in Ghana and hopefully open their eyes to cultural difference and customs.” The Paul D. Coverdell World Wise Schools program brings the Peace Corps experience home to American classrooms through stories, activities, and other free, cross-cultural learning materials. The program is dedicated to promoting 21st century global learning. McCarty joins the

more than 20 Arkansas residents currently serving in the Peace Corps. Nearly 1,000 Arkansas residents have served in the Peace Corps since its establishment in 1961. “I hope to help the village or community where I will be station[ed] learn that self-sustained living can be accomplished,” said McCarty. “I want to lift them to a better quality of living.” About Peace Corps/ Ghana: There are currently 214 volunteers in Ghana working in the areas of education, agriculture and health. During their service in Ghana, volunteers learn to speak the local languages, including: Pidgin English, Fulfulde and French. More than 3,470 Peace Corps volunteers have served in Ghana since the program was established in 1962.
