Be Not Hungry Pastor Steve Ellison John 6 opens with Jesus miraculously feeding 5,000 men plus women and children. This was an effort to teach his disciples a valuable lesson. John 6 continues with a testing of the disciples to see if they understood the teaching. John does not tell us that the episode on the stormy sea was a test but Mark 6:50-52 does, But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.” Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished, for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.” (NASU) Jesus intended for his disciples to know that He was the source of everything they needed and that they should trust only in Him. Because they did not understand, Jesus launched into a marvelous session of explanation and re-teaching which is recorded in John 6:25-69. Throughout the passage Jesus hammers home the truth that He and no one else is the Bread of Life/ Bread out of Heaven. The passage concludes with Peter, speaking for the group, making the great confession in verse 69, “We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.” (NASU) In the midst of this explanation, Jesus uses some very strong, very controversial language. In John 6:53-56 Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is

true food, and My blood is true drink. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” (NASU) Jesus drives home the point in no uncertain terms that following Him is very, very simple but requires the greatest possible commitment. The Bible makes it clear that faith in Jesus is radically different from every other religion. Faith in Jesus leaves room for nothing else. Faith in Jesus is an all-consuming endeavor. Many stumbled over Jesus command to eat His flesh and drink His blood. Jesus is talking about abiding in Him. Abiding in Christ is a major topic in John. This is the first mention of it. John 6:56 quoted above says that eating His flesh and drinking His blood simply means to abide in Him. John 6:35 states, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” (NASU) Also, believing in Jesus is equated with drinking. The one who comes to Jesus is eating His flesh. The one who believes in Jesus is drinking His blood. Verse 69 caps the teaching, indicating that the disciples finally understood, “We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.” (NASU) The word abiding indicates that this is an ongoing, continual action. It is truly a simple, easy command to understand. What Christ demands is that we live our lives with the understanding that we belong to Him, and that fact influences every act we make, every decision we make, every word we say, and every thought we think. ..……..…..pastorsteve8800@gmail.com
