The prime rib dinner was held at the Macon County Expo Center in Macon, raising more than $18,000 for scholarships. Northeast Missouri businesses, individuals, and organizations attended this year’s banquet to help raise funds to benefit local youth involved in the beef industry through scholarships and other financial assistance. Member Aaron Baker explains, “With the money we have been able to raise with the help of local supporters, we have awarded 170 scholarships, totaling more than $96,650 for high school seniors and current college students. The organization has also helped sponsor a barbecue at the county fair and assisted with several other youth events through the year.”

Macon Man Dies In Car Fire On February 22nd, at 12:48 a.m., the Macon Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a car fire at a municipal parking lot on the 100 block of East Bourke Street with a fire engine and 12 firefighters. The fire department arrived on scene at 12:49 a.m. and found ire in the engine compartment of the car. During extinguishment of the car, a

A record-breaking number of young farmers and ranchers attended the recent Missouri Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&R) Leadership Conference Feb. 15-17. Several of the 585 attending are members of the Adair-Schuyler County Farm Bureau and the Truman State University Collegiate Farm Bureau. The Conference was held at the Lake of the Ozark’s Tan-Tar-A Resort. The weekend event gives young people actively involved in farming a chance to network and learn more about their industry. Missouri Farm Bureau President Blake Hurst opened the conference with stories about working on the farm with his family when he was starting out as a farmer in Westboro, Mo., where he still farms. Other speakers included Matt Lohr, Virginia’s current commissioner of agriculture and a former national FFA officer who owns his own motivational speaking company, and MFB YF&R Committee Chairman Andy Clay who farms near Jamestown, Mo. Lohr told the group farmers have been able to accomplish so much because they have adapted to change. Today, of the 2.1 million farms in the U.S., 100,000 provide 75 percent of production. “Take the time to educate our urban friends,” he says. “Just because they don’t understand doesn’t mean they don’t want to understand.” Clay closed the conference with a similar message. He says a recent survey ranked farmers eighth among occupations young people are interested in, behind nurses, firemen, policemen and superheros. “That’s why young farmers need to become involved. They need to tell their story,” he says. “I never wanted to be a fireman, policeman or superhero, but I’ve always wanted to be a farmer.” The conference was loaded with mini-seminars, a trade show, fun and games. In 2013, the Cattlemen raised more than $18,000 at their annual banquet to help fund their local scholarship program. Baker also added the continued success of the banquet is due to the enthusiasm of local cattlemen, businesses, and individuals who participate in the auctions, raffle, and other fundraising at the event. “It doesn’t matter if the people attending are directly involved with agriculture, they are always willing to raise money for the kids and have a good time while doing so.” More than one-hundred items were raffled or auctioned for both youth and adults. The prime rib dinner attracted more than 350 local residents. A Texas Hold’em Tournament followed the steak dinner and short program.
