Hundreds of Balloons Released In Memory of Adriaunna

Family and many friends gathered at Hazel Park in Golden City Tuesday, August 19th, 2014 at 4 p.m. in memory of 10 year old Adriaunna Horton who was kidnapped, then raped and murdered one year ago.

“It is nice to know that my little girl was loved by so many and it breaks my heart to see all of her classmates,” Windi Jackson, her mother said.” “She would have started to school with them Monday.”

Hundreds of pink balloons, her favorite color, were released in her memory.

On August 19, 2013, at 4:55 p.m. Adriaunna was playing in the park with her two sisters and friends.

She was observed a short time later getting into the front passenger door of a blue Ford driven by Bobby D. Bourne. Her sister ran to her grandfathers for help and the search was

on.

A Trooper stopped Bourne at 7:05 p.m. He denied picking her up but was arrested and charged with felony kidnapping.

Several hundred people scoured the area looking for Audriaunna.

Bourne later admitted having picked her up and directed investigators to

the site in Dade County where her body was recovered.

“I miss her dearly and I hope justice comes quickly, her mom said.”

Bourne is charged with murder in this case and scheduled to go on trial in 2015. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

New Bridge Nears Completion

A new 24’x 30’ bridge located on S. Dade 41, southwest of Lockwood, nears completion and is expected to be open for traffic within two weeks.

Dan Long and Murl Johnson began working on the project the first part of August.

Cost of the bridge will be approximately $75-80,000.00 coming from Cart Funds, Dade County Commissioner Randy Daniel states.

Arcola Community Garage Sale The Arcola Christian Church will host the Arcola Community Garage Sale on Saturday, September 13, from 8-1.

Anyone is welcome to set up a table for free. Just call to register by September 7.

Donated items will benefit the youth activity fund and can be picked up or delivered to the church by September 7.

Construction To Begin On New Bridge

The construction of a new 24’ x 30’ bridge on Dade County 237 northeast of Greenfield, just off U Highway, is expected to begin about September 10th.

The present bridge was built in 1932.

Bids for the project will be opened on September 8th, 2014.

Cost of the bridge will be approximately $75-80,000.00 coming from the Cart Funds, Commissioner Randy Daniel says.

Lockwood Volunteer Fire Department’s monthly Cruise-in was held at Good Shepherd Nursing Home on July 31st.

Several residents, families, staff and members of our community attended this event.

Everyone enjoyed the brats, hamburgers, and French fries that the fire department barbequed. The turnout was great, as we enjoyed looking at all the old and new cars and trucks.

This certainly brought back memories of yesteryear with our residents. Thanks to all the participants and fire department for coming out and showing us a good time.

Folks enjoy the cars and visi ng with each other.

Kenneth Leroy Scott

Allen Lynn Hurd Oldest son, born August 3, 1955, in Lockwood, Missouri to Alfred and Leona Parnell Hurd of Everton, Missouri, Allen was joyfully welcomed home by his three big sisters: Mae Manning, Glenda Sue Harley and Mary Amalea Moore. He was later joined by two younger brothers, Clovis and Fabian Hurd.

Allen graduated from Everton High School and started a career in the oil fields of Texas with the help of his good friend and mentor, Marvin “Willie” Sherwood.

From land based oil operations, Allen transferred to the drillship, Glomar Grand Isle, becoming a driller, traveling and exploring the world’s oceans in search of oil.

He travelled the seas from Alaska to Australia, Africa to South America through the Panama Canal and became a seaman after crossing the equator.

Even though traveling the world, Allen’s heart remained in Dade County with his family,

friends and neighbors.

On November 9, 1979, Allen married Diane Schmidt and her two sons: Ian Tate and Kris Tate of Mt. Vernon, Missouri.

Allen and Diane moved to a farm in Dade County where they remained for 34 years. To this union was born a son, Cody Allen Hurd, in 1982.

After leaving the oil fields, Allen owned his own truck for several years and worked for several trucking companies.

The Hurds then became Career Level Foster parents for the State of Missouri for 10 years.

Many young men came to live with Hurds where Allen showed them respect and to care for others with his horses and mules.

The family spent four years caring for Hulston Mill, cleaning the park.

With fellow Dade County Historical Society members, he made improvements that would allow equestrian and family activities and other community activities.

Allen went to join his

grandparents, George and Susie Stockton Hurd; his parents, Alfred and Leona Hurd; his brother, Clovis Hurd; and his sister-inlaw, Jan Stone on July 31, 2014, after a battle with cancer.

A celebration of Allen’s life was held at Hulston Mill with many family members, school mates, friends, neighbors and fellow Mueller drivers sharing memories of Allen’s life.

A friend, Dave Talley, gave the eulogy and shared stories of Allen’s life.

Donations may be made to the hospice and the family wishes to express their appreciation to the Dade County Historical Society for the use of their facilities.

Allen is survived by Diane, his wife of 34 years; his sons: Ian Tate, Kris Tate, Cody Hurd, Cory Hurd and James Allen Hurd; his grandchildren: Kailey, Jayden, McKenzie, Miya and Ken; many special nieces and nephews; and a special son, Joshua Gilmore.

Donald Eugene Steele Donald Eugene Steele, of Arcola, Missouri, departed this life on Thursday, August 21, 2014 in Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri at the age of 56 years.

Ronald Eugene Reed Ronald Eugene Reed, age 81, of Mt.

A funeral service, under the direction of Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, was held on Monday, August 25, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. Burial, with full military honors, followed at the Mt. Vernon IOOF Cemetery.

Twila Kay (Woods) Ellis, of Lockwood, Missouri, departed this life on Friday, August 22, 2014, in her home at the age of 69 years.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 25, 2014 in Greenfield Funeral Chapel. Burial followed in Ash Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ash Grove Cemetery. Kenneth Leroy Scott, 87, of Blue Springs, Missouri passed away August 16, 2014.

Visitation was held from 6-8 pm Friday, August 22nd at First Baptist Church of Blue Springs.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 23rd, also at the church.

Interment followed at Blue Springs Cemetery.

Kenneth was born on March 1, 1927 in Greenfield, Missouri to Ira Eugene Scott and Lucy Belle (Stark) Scott.

Kenneth was united in marriage to Lorraine Frances (Cook) Scott on June 8, 1945; the same year he graduated from Greenfield High School.

He entered the Armed Forces 7 days after their wedding.

After returning from service, he spent time farming in Greenfield, and doing factory work in Racine, Wisconsin.

In 1953, they moved to Independence, Missouri, then made Blue Springs, Missouri their permanent home in 1960.

He worked for McLean Truck Lines until his retirement in 1986.

Kenneth and Lor-

raine were lifelong members of First Baptist Church of Blue Springs.

He was ordained as a deacon in 1961.

He spent the rest of his life in active service to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Whenever there was a need, Kenneth was eager to serve. He drove shuttle buses for youth and seniors, picked up donations for the food pantry, and would distribute to shelters throughout the city when needed.

He was a member of the tribe of Mic-O-Say and saw two sons become Eagle Scouts. Many activities and camp outs were enjoyed over the years.

He and Lorraine spent their lives together loving four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine, his parents, and grandson, John Michael Scott.

Kenneth is survived by his children: daughter, Lee Anne Kistenmacher & husband, Eric, of Gig Harbor, Washington; son, David Scott & wife, Suzanne, of Westminster, Colorado; son, Myron

Dade County Commission Minutes August 18, 2014 Randy Daniel, Presiding called the meeting of the Dade County Commission to order at 9:00 a.m. on August 18, 2014.

Attendance: Presiding Commissioner Randy Daniel, Eastern Commissioner Dallas Maxwell, Western Commissioner David Rusch and County Clerk, Melinda Wright present.

1. 911 Director, Lori Sneed as well as several of the 911 Board members met with the Commission regarding a tax that was implemented in 2002 for 911, and it had not been collected on residential utilities. The 911 board wants to start collecting this tax on residential util-

ities and needs the Commission to sign an ordinance. The Commission is concerned that it will look like a new tax, when it is not, as it was voted on in 2002. The Commission told 911 of their concerns. 911 expressed their concerns and told the Commission of several upgrades that 911 is going to have to implement that are very costly.

Motion to adopt ordinance # 14-1 regarding residential utilities sales tax for 911.

Rusch- Yes, MaxwellYes. 2. The Commission received the minutes from the July Extension Meeting.

3. Motion to accept

the August 11, 2014, minutes as corrected. RuschYes, Maxwell-Yes. 4. Motion made to purchase another car for the Sheriffs Department at a cost to the County of $4092.00 after insurance.

Maxwell-Yes, Rusch-Yes. The Commission would also like to make note that they would like the $4092.00 recaptured from the accused.

5. The Commission checked the bridge on S. Dade 41. The Commission checked the culvert on W. Dade 72. The Commission discussed a bridge on FR 271.

The Dade County Emergency Services held their monthly Board of Directors meeting on July 31, 2014.

Present were: board members: L. Crane, R. Lasater, R. Getman, N. Schilling and C. Allen; Staff: Director Lori Sneed.

Meeting was called to order by C. Allen at 9:10 a.m.

A motion was made

by R. Getman and seconded by N. Schilling to approve the May and June minutes and the June financial statement.

5 yeas, 0 nays.

Old business: Discussion was held about the domestic utility tax that we have not been collection since the inception of the emergency services sale tax. The board discussed contacting the county commission to set up a meeting and discuss the issue.

Discussion was held about the recent audit.

The audit was released by the CPA with no significant findings. The one recommendation by auditors was to have the financial duties delegated to more that one employee. However, the audit does acknowledge

that in an agency so small this would be a difficult recommendation to implement.

New business: Motion was made by N. Schilling and seconded

by R. Lasater to approve up to $90,000 for the purchase of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) upgrades. The current CAD system has not been upgraded since 2007 and is becoming obsolete. 5yeas, 0-nays.

by C. Allen to adjoin.

The next meeting was held August 21, 2014.

Keatts Celebrate 40th Anniversary

Max and Vickie (Moore) Keatts, Greenfield, Missouri will be celebrating their 40th anniversary on August 30, 2014.

They were united in marriage in 1974 at the First Christian Church in Golden City, Missouri.

They have been

blessed with two children: a son, Scott Keatts and his wife, Denise, reside in Webb City, Missouri; and a daughter, Jana Cooper and her husband, Paul, reside in Oronogo, Missouri.

They also have five grandchildren.

Letter to Editor: Can You Imagine?

I cannot imagine just how awful it would be to live anywhere without law enforcement.

I am all for a top notch police force. Wellsupplied with all they need to do a good job and

be safe as possible while on their job.

The perpetrators, marauders, opportunists should be the very first ones to answer questions.

If I am out there where I’m not supposed

to be and I get hurt, my fault.

We waste enough money that could support a Top Notch Police Force.

Says Austin David Emery, a 2013 graduate of Greenfield High School, continuing his evolution as one of the nation’s newest sailors in the United States Navy, a global force for good.

The basic training of sailor recruits graduation ceremonies took place August 15, 2014, at the Great Lakes Recruit Training Camp, Great Lakes, Illinois.

It was during that time that Sailor Emery received his medals, representing recognition of National Defense and Small Arms Markmanship.

Sailor Emery has now moved on to further his training and induction in Pennsacola, Florida. There, he is to pursue a chosen rate at a naval airman.

Afterwards, Sailor Emery will carry out orders as to the assignment of his ship, the U.S.S. George Washington.

The U.S.S. George Washington is a CV-73 Aircraft Carrier, stationed in Yokosuka, Japan and operated by better than 6,000 sailors in their respective positions.

It is aboard this vessel where all training comes together for Sailor Emery, now within his working position as part of the fleet.

Anchors away, son.

1st Annual Busy Bee 4-H Small Animal Show The Busy Bee 4-H club will be hosting a small animal show in the American Legion lot during Lockwood's September Days on Saturday, September 20. The show is open to all youth ages 8-18, showing rabbits, poultry, goats and sheep.

Ages 5-7 may participate for fun (poultry or rabbits only), but will not be judged. Check-in begins at 8am with judging to

start at 9am. Awards will be given to 1st and 2nd place in each category.

Letter To The Editor I was glad to read Bob Jackson’s article about all the coaches from 1947 to present.

I would like to help Bob, and mention Coach Rodney Kramer. Coach Kramer was one of the best, if not the best coach in Greenfield School. He took a group of boys that were lightweights and

had limited talent through a perfect season of 10-0. They beat an outstanding Lockwood Team and an even better Bolivar team due to some outstanding coaching, and some hard working boys to claim the Midwest Conference Title.

He gave us memories to last for a lifetime. To-

days boys are faster, bigger and more talented than we were. It is very unfortunate that so many of our athletes today will never take this opportunity.

Thank you Coach Rodney Kramer for the year 1961 that I will never forget!

Saturday, Violet Campbell hosted the Country Cousins monthly meeting and served us homemade icecream and desserts. It was delicious and we want to thank Harvey for cranking it for her. I was the lucky winner of the hostess gift and got lots of useable paper products. Thank you, Violet.

I want to extend sympathy to Diane Austin on the loss of her step-dad, Thomas Nance, 72 of So. Greenfield.

Somebody had recommended it for the best cheeseburger, so he drove up here to try it out. He was not disappointed and said the lady who waited on him was very nice. (Our very own Tina Summers.) Way to go, Red's!!

I remember a few years back when we were in the 100’s, we thought the 90’s weren’t bad.

I have been home bound for a couple of weeks with infection and fluid build up so my news will be short.

Friends and family watch over me. My vision is about the same, saw doctor Saturday and go back in the morning on Friday.

I believe I have discovered who my angel is, Mary Carr. She lives between Lockwood and Lamar but she spends some of her weekends at her place east of me.

When here she picks my newspaper up and places it on the porch, thanks Mary. Other mornings my neighbor brings my paper to my chair.

I got to keep Lucy Thursday and Friday in Springfield. We had a really good two days and she is really starting to talk where I can understand her.

Rajean Marlowe is enjoying going on the road with her husband, Phil, in his company's 18 wheeler. She is getting to see lots of country.

Steven Lewis has been having some health issues and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Steve Grider got word this past week that he is going to have to have a pacemaker put in.

I understand we have a new challenge going around, the ALS cold water bucket challenge. I have seen lots of the videos on Facebook and they are hilarious.

Arvest Bank in Southwest Missouri will be partnering with Ozarks Food Harvest, Lockwood Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry, Monett Community Kitchen, Newton County Food Basket Brigade, Inc. and Carthage Bright Futures for the 1 Million Meals initiative, a two-month, bank-wide effort to provide one million meals or more to those in need.

These organizations will receive nonperish-

able food and monetary donations made at Arvest branches in Southwest Missouri from September 3 through November 1.

“We are so happy to have these organizations benefit from 1 Million Meals initiative in our area. The funds and meals raised as part of this campaign will go towards helping so many families in our communities, and just in time for the busy holiday season,” Doug Doll, president/CEO of Arvest Bank, Joplin, said.

Montgomery Reunion The descendents of Charles Fox Montgomery will gather together on Saturday, September 20th, 2014, at a location very near the original site where the reunion began years ago near the banks of Mutton Creek.

September Days Baby Show Make plans to bring your bundle of joy to the September Days Baby Show on Saturday, September 20th

The diapers-only baby show will take place on the main stage in the Arvest parking lot at 10:30am (immediately following the September Days parade).

Another month has passed, and I find myself wondering where all the days went. We are now officially an “empty nest,” and I am wondering how my two kids managed to get all grown so quickly. I know there are seasons in life, pockets of time when things stay the same, and seasons when change is the hallmark of everyday life.

I realize, as well, that change is an important part of life, but sometimes it happens so quickly. It seems that it was just a few days ago that I started preaching in Greenfield, and in a few months I will have completed seven years serving Ebenezer.

Where does that time go?

My friends and I commiserate about the changes in our lives, whether physical or relational, and they ask the same questions. Perhaps you, too, are wondering where the years are going, or have gone.

Considering the passing of time, I sometimes wish I could have spent more time with the kids. And yet, they turned out just fine, so why am I com-

plaining?

I suppose the fact is that we get so busy with the everyday, necessary things that we don’t have time for the important things, our relationships.

How many marriages have fallen apart because they didn’t have time for each other and so grew in opposite directions, often leaving the other behind.

How many children grew up without a parent’s guidance and comfort, only because the parent was working so hard to make ends meet.

I suppose it all comes down to perspective. I often say, “I don’t have a life.” Of course, I am living and breathing—not some kind of zombie! I suppose what I am really saying is that I’m not content with the pace of the life I have. Most likely, you have been there, as well, finding yourself in a place where you are so busy that you realize you don’t have time for the important things in your life: relationships, intimate conversations, laughter, prayer.

The relationships we are missing because we are too busy aren’t just

those here on earth, but the conversations we have with our Maker and our Redeemer. But we’re too busy. Too much to do and no time to get it done.

Often, I remind myself of Jesus’ parable about the rich fool. He had a bumper harvest one year, but instead of being generous with those around him who could have benefited, he just built bigger silos to hold all of his wealth.

The problem was that just as he was glorifying in his accomplishments, it was also time for him to die.

Someone else got all of his wealth and grain.

That might not seem to apply to this conversation, but when we look at our time as the silos we build to fill with whatever we are chasing in this life, it does apply.

This seems to be purely a modern-day issue. Because we can prosper, because we can work too many hours, we find it easier to set aside the community aspect of our lives. With the advent of the back-of-thehouse deck and television, as well, we have lost the front porch and the slow evening walk, and all of the fellowship that occurred as neighbors greeted one an-

other.

So where am I going with this? Mainly, the realization that I do have a life, but that I have to take control over that life, making it what I want it to be, or better yet, what God wants it to be. I do have a life, maybe not the one I was hoping for or expected, but a life nevertheless. It is my job to be a steward over that life, over those minutes, hours, and years, deciding what is important and what can wait.

Jesus valued the individual and spent time with people. He emphasized relationships and caring for one another.

Even if I follow that example, I suppose the years will still fly by, but they will leave behind something greater than just “busy-ness.”

My goal is to take time for the important things, not just the urgent, to stop and talk, even when I have a full to-do list, and to appreciate every aspect of this life God has given me, before it is gone.

My family and I have recently moved to Liberty Baptist Church in Everton. As the new pastor here I did not know for sure what to fully expect.

I have, however, been pleasantly surprised by the generosity and love of the community. It is hard to express the welcoming reception we have encountered since we have been here. The folks of Liberty Baptist have spoiled us beyond belief so far. But what stands out to us as much as anything is how friendly and receptive the people of Dade county are. When visiting Everton, Greenfield and Ash Groove we have noticed that the people are full of smiles and hellos. We did a lot of praying about our decision to move so far away from family and friends.

Little did we know He was sending us into such a wonderful area. My first message here at Liberty Baptist was titled "The Greatest Commandment". Jesus tells us that the greatest commandment of all is, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind. And the next is like it, Love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus is not promoting self adoration, He is simply telling us to take care of others as we do our own basic needs.

When we get hungry, we

eat. When we get thirsty, we drink. When we need clothes, we clothe ourselves. Our neighbor, Jesus says is whomever we see that is in need. The apostle Paul also tells us in Philippians 2:2-3 that in the church we should be "like minded, having the same love, being of one accord." He says we should put others needs and wants before our own. After visiting various businesses and public places I have found that the people around this area are a lot like this. The people of Liberty Baptist have gone out of their way to put my family first and make us welcome. I invite you also to come and enjoy fellowship with these great people. There is an "Alive and kicking" youth group as well as children's programs and several adult Sunday school classes.

This is definitely a loving and open armed place.

Photography 101 Four sessions of Photography 101 will offered at the Dade County Library.

The sessions will be held September 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The sessions will cover different topics from controlling light, general photography terms, how to get a better photograph from point and shoot cameras, meaning of various icons found on cameras, how to use cameras with removable lenses, tools for modifying light, how to control shadows in portraits and photographing groups.

To attend the inservice, you must preregister at the Dade County Library located at 209 S. Main, Greenfield, by Thursday, September 4, 2014. Registrations will be limited to 15.

A maximum donation to the Library of $1 per session can be made at the time of registration, but not required.

Students can earn tuition scholarship funding worth up to $9,500 for college or technical school while attending Greenfield High School.

GHS participates in the A+ Schools Program, which was created as an incentive to ensure that all students who graduate from Missouri high schools are well prepared to pursue advanced education and employment.

Students who graduate from a designated A+ high school may qualify for a state-paid financial incentive to attend community college or career/technical school full-time in Missouri.

mation about the A+ program can be found on the Missouri Department of Higher Education’s (MDHE) website at dhe.mo.gov.

To be eligible for this incentive, students must complete the requirements established by the state A+ Program and MDHE. These include: Attend an A+ School for three consecutive years (grades 10, 11, 12) prior to graduation.

Graduate with an unweighted, unrounded cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Graduate with a minimum cumulative 95% average daily attendance record.

Maintain a record of good citizenship and avoid the use of alcohol and drugs.

Perform 50 hours of upaid tutoring and mentoring to younger students in our district.

Apply for non-payback scholarships by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Male students 18 years of age must register with the selective service.

Score proficient or advanced on the Algebra I, Algebra II or Geometry EOC exam or alternatively achieve an MDHE-established minimum score on the math part of the ACT or Compass (score to be determined).

FORGET-ME NOTS by Gail Leaming Had an interesting thing happen to me that I am still wondering about.

While Ron was in the hospital this last week, I would stop each morning at the McDonalds on Campbell in Springfield and order my dollar tea (unsweet cut half with water) and a little breakfast.

Since they never get this order right, they would make me pull up while they redid my tea and bring it out.

The first day I ordered bagel with cream cheese to go with it. The girl that brought it out came out smiling, apologized and gave me my order to which I smiled back and thanked her.

She had one of those scarves on like a Muslim which surprised me that she was so young and working there.

The next day, I ordered a dollar egg and sausage burrito to go with the tea which I again had to pull up while they redid my tea and the same girl came out carrying my order and just glared at me car-

rying the bag with two fingers.

These people make me uneasy anyway.

Mainly because they (personally) told me that they are to kill all infidels. Since I am an infidel, makes sense to be uneasy. I have thought on this as to why she glared at me. I think it was either my license plate AIM-HYR or I was making her carry a part of a PIG since I had ordered egg and sausage.

I wonder how she could work there and be so close to the pig.

Anyway, the next day she didn’t even come out. They sent someone else.

Ron is out now and back home so I guess I can’t check to see if she is still there but it does make me wonder.

Does make me feel better that we have 5 million NRA members now and the numbers are growing.

We sure can’t expect our government to protect us with all these people also crossing our borders.

Heard the other day

we have a border patrol guy raised in Avilla working in Arizona.

Hope he stays safe.

We ventured out Sunday to the Stone’s Throw Theater and our table partners were from Lamar. Dorothy Roberts, Lonnie Crain and Betty Gideon, old friends of my mother’s. What fun to visit with them. It is like they say, You can’t buy old friends. That is Dolly Parton’s new song with Kenny Rogers.

Carol McVey and Carl Sheets were there also, but we couldn’t sit with them.. They need a better ticket organizer (me) than they had.

Maybe next time I can get it right. The next one will be 39 Steps next October.

Kamala had to bow out at the last minute with an emergency of helping a friend out.

I want to say I am sorry about only staying a few minutes at the Round Prairie reunion but my arm said to go home. I had overstayed the limit without pain pills. Boy, will I be glad when this next surgery is over and my arm will be

complete.

Ron had stayed home because of his foot and the heat. Couldn’t get excited about 100 degree weather.

The squash bugs came in over night and got my squash plants (that is, what the heat hadn’t killed) so I guess I am down to watering grapes and tomatoes.

Went down to water the horse and spent an hour fixing the electric fence. It is a lot easier than the old wire electric fences to fix tho. I think it must have been deer that tore these up as it was all down low.

Clea Kleeman said her dogs had decided that the fish pool was their new swimming pool. I told her mine weren’t labs but my fish pool was our dogs new spa, too.

At least the heat isn’t hurting them that much.

I do have to water them twice a day. Take care of the animals, everyone. It is dangerously hot.

Reception for McMasters Harold McMasters, pastor of Main Street Baptist Church in Greenfield, will be retiring on Sunday, August 31, 2014.

Bro. Harold will have completed 21 years at Main Street and a total of 56 years in ministry.

Although technically retired, Bro. Harold will continue to be used of God for pulpit supply and interims.

A reception will be held to honor Bro. Harold and Connie at 2 p.m. on August 31, 2014, at Main

Street Baptist Family Life Center. The public is invited to attend and recognize them for years of service to the church and the community.

DACO Grant Application Deadline Set October 13 The DACO Community Foundation is an affiliate of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks serving the communities of Arcola, Dadeville, Everton, Greenfield and South Greenfield.

The organization is now taking applications for grants designed to aid community and school organizations within its service area.

Five competitive grants of $500.00 each will be awarded based upon the completion of the an application.

The grants may be written for anything the organization has a need for and will be awarded based upon thorough ex-

planation of need and perceived value to the organization and school and community it serves.

The applications will be evaluated by the DACO Board of Directors and awarded at the end of October.

Applicants must be a 501c3 or have a current 501c3 nonprofit or other qualified entity that will act as a fiscal agent. Proof of this status must be provided from the IRS or a school, governmental entity or faith based entity.

92-Year-Old Woman Dies At Accident Scene A 92-year-old Jasper woman was involved in a car accident at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, August 23, 2014, on County Road 20, eight miles south of Golden City, Missouri.

Clara C. Hobson was southbound in a 1993 Ford Crown Victoria when she slid off the left side of the road and struck a ditch, coming to rest in a grassy field, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reports. She was later pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy

Jasper County Coroner, due to a possible medical condition.

The vehicle was towed by Berts Towing of Joplin.

Investigating the accident was Cpl. J. Prewitt of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

This is Troop D’s 66th fatality for 2014.

Immanuel’s Life and Leisure group met in the Meeting Room on Sunday, August 17, for a pizza supper at 6:00 p.m.

Hosts were Orrin and Agness Shaw.

Around twenty enjoyed the different pizzas and the fellowship.

Agnes had a devotional entitled, Well Done Faithful Servant. She mentioned certain talents,

but everyone has a special talent which the Lord gives to each individual and we should use them for God’s Glory.

She closed with a prayer and Orrin shared a couple of humorous stories.

Various games were enjoyed the rest of the evening. The group always likes to get together and missed several of the regulars that evening.

Gospel Concert At Glad Tidings Assembly Steve Weatherford will be ministering in song at the Morning Worship Servcie on Sunday, August 31, 2014, at 11:40 a.m. at the Glad Tidings Assembly, located at 220 N. Main, Greenfield, Missouri.

Steve was a part of the award winning Homecoming video, Old Friends.

He now tours as a solo artist, using skills he has learn from years of music and ministry.

“My desire is to continue to sing and tell people about the joys of being a Christian, how God meets your needs and that God is good!” enthused Steve.

Football season began last week. Volleyball and softball start this week.

The first 8-man game played by the Wildcats resulted in a 66-0 defeat to Albany at Greenfield. The Warriors traveled 237 miles to play Greenfield.

Albany is playing 8-man for the first time after competing in class I 11man in the past.The Warriors had 30 players’ Greenfield had 12.

Lockwood: The Tigers opened the 2014 in style as, on the opening kickoff, they scored and

went on to a 55-6 win over Liberal. The Bulldogs was picked to finish last in the SRVC. Lockwood used the inside running game of Ethan Bates, the speed of Kyle Bouldin, plus the passing of Ben Schnelle to dominate Liberal. The gang tackling of the Tiger defense stopped Liberal all night.

Lockwood hosts Rich Hill of the WEMO conference this Friday. Rich Hill lost to Lincoln 51-20 in their first game.

MILLER: The Cardinals went to state ranked Marionville and upset the Comets 34-30. They will downsize and host Greenfield in a 8-man game this week.

ASH GROVE: The Pirates were upset by Cabool 12-6 at Ash Grove Cabool coming into the game had lost 22 games in a row. Ash Grove hosts Stockton who beat El Dorado Springs 28-14 to win the Cedar County Bowl.

playing nurse again to his dog, Jo Jo, who has been under the weather.

Who would have ever thought he would be such a good nurse!

On Friday night, Kim and I enjoyed eating Mexican at Mt. Vernon. I do believe they are the best around these parts.

It was sure hot on Saturday, but it didn’t stop us from working outside all day Saturday.

Kim and Jacob were out and about running around also. Abby had to work. That evening, Kim went to a hunt in Ash Grove. It is never too hot to hunt.

Deepest sympathy to all of those who have lost loved one. It is never easy and so hard to say good by. They are going to a better place and we know it, just hard.

A large crowd attended the annual Vandegrift reunion. If they all showed we would be busting at the seams.

Thanks to our hostess families, Carol Beasley, Cheryl Asher, Kathryn Hosman and Sherry Baldwin. We missed Beth. My daughter-in-

law, Abby, was wondering if there is anyone we are not kin to. She knew some of them and wondered why they were there. Only to find out they are family. Too funny.

The new preacher at Liberty started this past Sunday. Rick and Tracey Sharp are moved in and ready to get started on their new adventure at Liberty. They are getting broke in real good with all the things going on with the Ladies retreat event.

The ladies met at Liberty on Tuesday and Wednesday for those last minute things to get done. Coming together with a lot of team work.

These ladies are like a good oiled machine. This will make 16 years and they have it down to a fine art.

Beverly Johnson has been back in the hospital again, but got released.

Wishing her a speedy recovery. She has really had a time of it.

Continue to keep all those in your prayers.

My daily prayer, several times a day, is for our

special friend, Maggie Jones. There so many that need our prayers.

On Tuesday, our Kelbey Bowles will begin working at the Lockwood Mercy Clinic. She is so looking forward to the short drive close to home. I know she will do great there.

I will be off work on Friday as Kelbey, Jaime, Suzanne and I are doing some cooking for the retreat. So I will turn news in early.

We have really enjoyed helping with the retreat this year. Nobody realizes how much work goes into this and they are working on it all year long. The time and money that is involved.

But God always provide.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

Greenfield school started on Monday and Wade and Chloe were ready. William not so much. But I bet if I ask the little ones today if they are ready to go back, they might be ready for another summer break.

Ha!! Those poor teachers have their hands full.

TRUDELL NEWS by Blanche Trudell August 14, 2014 Here it is and school is already going. It starts earlier every year. When I was a girl, we started after labor Day, so all the crops could be gotten out as we helped do the work by hand, Now we have air conditioned tractors to do the work and the youth are not allowed to work as young as we did.

It didn’t hurt any of us to work.

In fact, it taught us good work ethics, but we didn’t have cell phones, computers, televisions, air conditioning, inside plumbing, or whole house furnaces.

We had to pump water by hand, walk everywhere, or ride horseback, but we had time for fun and getting out for lots of outdoor activities. Very few of us were overweight.

Oh well, a lot has changed and some of it is very helpful for us in our

OLD age.

I really do enjoy the air conditioning, and not having to cut wood for the stove, or can with the hot cook stove.

Yes, things have changed. We now have electric lights on the farm, and I don’t want things back as they were when I was a child. My husband, Joe and I both feel that air conditioning is one of the best medicines for lots of old people.

Friday, Joe and our son, Jim Wiss, spent time helping the family get ready for their sale, Tuesday 19th, I went over but didn’t do much as I don’t take the heat and sun well, I did make plans, with the family for the memorial service for Jerry Little.

Saturday, we went to lunch in Carthage with Nancy Shanahan to celebrate her birthday. I didn’t get to the Optimist Duck race in Stockton, as

I can’t be 3 places at the same time. They did good on the race and everybody had a lot of fun.

Joe and I went to Church Sunday. We enjoyed the guest speaker, Burris Rader, from El Dorado Springs. Then, we had a pot luck dinner, and went to visit one of our members, Guy Henry. He lives is Humansville, Missouri. He is 94 and still at home, with his wife, Joyce. We had a good visit and then came home for supper.

Monday, I took time to visit Charles Edwards.

He hasn’t been feeling very well and we had a good visit, too. I need to visit some of our members more often. I am feeling better, so maybe I will be able to do better with our members. I enjoy their company, maybe even more than they enjoy having me come by.

This has been a hot week hope to get some rain SOON! Joe and I started to leave Church last Sunday when we noticed that David Acuna and his wife, Judy, hadn’t gotten their car started. We went back and found that his tumbler on the car key wouldn’t turn.

Joe and I and David all tried to make it turn, but to no avail so I went to Sunday’s drive in and got some lunch for us, and we ate together at the church. Then, we came home and got the truck and some tools. I took Judy home and Joe and David worked until dark, but still didn’t get the Jeep (car) started.

And Joe took David home.

Monday, Joe went to Jerry Little’s to let the auctioneer and his group in to get things ready for the sale, then back to get David Acuna, to work on the Jeep. By dark Mon-

day, after taking the dash apart, pulling the steering wheel, etc., they got the key to turn and the Jeep started.

While Joe was helping David, I went to see what I could do to help Dana Roush (Jerry Little’s daughter) and we cleaned up the trailer and tried to get everything ready for the sale. They sold everything but the farm.

Tuesday, we went back and helped with the sale. IT WAS A HOT DAY, but the breeze helped. Our son, Jim Wiss, and his friend, Jim Steffins, came from Independence, Missouri and both of them ended buying something. I think the family of Jerry Little, did fine and now they don’t have to worry about people stealing all the stuff Jerry had laying around.

Wednesday, I went to the eye doctor. With my glasses that I now have, I

can still see good enough as not to have to buy new ones for now. I could get better vision if I did, but not enough to have to spend that money. I can see 20/20 and that’s good!

Thursday, we stayed home most of the day. I did go to the post office in Stockton and pick up the mail for Eric and Donna Worthington, then to Raders Dry goods store, in Lockwood to get some embroidery work, and then home in the airconditioning, where I worked awhile on Christmas presents.

Let us remember to pray for all those who are serving our country, those in the nursing homes, those in the storms and all the people who have been sick or lost loved ones. GOD BLESS AMERICA! May God bless us all!

WE SHOULD LOOK BACK MORE OFTEN II by Henry McBride One of the items I ran across in our current process of ‘downsizing’ is my old textbook for a course in evolution. As you can guess, I hardly ever throw a book away, even worthless books like this one. The course in evolution was an elective graduate class.

I was working on a Master’s Degree in science at New Mexico Highlands University. I thought this should be an easy three hours (it was), plus I had never had anything official on the topic.

It didn’t hurt, or help either for that matter, that the professor teaching the class was my research advisor. Several grad

students were working on various aspects of his huge research project trying to establish base data for organic acids.

I worked on the optical properties of selected organic acids during the year I was there, which was hardly enough time to make a dent in that aspect of his project.

All college students now buying textbooks should look closely at the price of this textbook, $7.00.

Its title is EVOLUTION: Process and Product by Edward O. Dodson, in case you choose to look it up.

Darwin’s book was published in 1859 so we had about a century for his ideas on evolution to develop before I took the class. They really did not develop very far, just as false and misleading in 1960 as they were in 1859.

The first chapter set the pace. Titled Chapter One: Evolution by Natural Selection: Darwin’s Conception, the book starts off with a loser of an idea. Natural selection is a valid idea in Biology. The problem is that it has absolutely nothing to do with evolution. Natural selection

could not contribute to evolution if it wanted to.

My experiences with biology teachers in college were totally opposite of what most students have to put up with today. We went through the book as far as we could, looking at the supposed strengths and weaknesses of evolution theory. Free and open discussion and we students could draw our own conclusions. My professor did not accept evolution theory as truth.

He didn’t push us one way or the other.

This is the kind of atmosphere I believe most thinking people would like in our secondary

schools and colleges today. It is not the kind of atmosphere many secondary teachers create and most college Professors demand. I read often of college students being berated, insulted, called names, and belittled for their beliefs if they have the nerve to question the validity of evolution theory.

This and the writings of radical evolutionists are why I believe that evolutionism, even if claimed under the label of atheism, is a religion to many people.

I have little problem with people like this.

After all, not being Christian, in today’s political

environment and court reinterpretation of our Constitution, they are still entitled to religious freedom.

I have a great problem with Christians who claim to believe the Bible but reject or alter clear Bible teachings on God’s great creation. Twentyfive of the 200 New Testament allusions to Genesis were said by Jesus, the Christ. I’m convinced that Jesus knew what He was talking about regarding creation and other events in Genesis. Therefore, I rely on His word regarding sin and salvation.

April- was election time and the new board elected by the people.

Many have stated what a great change for South Greenfield.

New Trustees were excited and moving forward. We have to support our own local communities. As the new Trustees started asking for Village records they were shown a total disaster.

To put it mildly, Clerk stated, “They are in storage. I don’t know what and where.”

Three trustees opened a box of worms! The further we dig, the more we find and certain old board seems to be very agitated.

It happened under the old boards watch, not ours. Two boxes of records reappeared from thin air. Many residents have come forth with information.

May: Our first water tower cleaning and inspection.

The Water Operator did precisely how and what he was told, per the engineers. It was not our operator’s fault! It is a thing that happens to everyone and everything at one point or another (an unforeseen incident).

The Water Operator contacted me (Michelle) Chairperson and I contacted the other Trustees and within a few minutes the procedure was at a halt. The Water Operator and Trustees took care of all of the Village residents immediately!

We had to call in contracted help, Top Notch Excavating.

Thank you Brad Campbell for his immediate assistance. We worked until 1 a.m. finishing with the most urgent that night. I have wanted to say another big Thank You to Water Operator, Brad Campbell and to the entire Trustees. I also called in the clerk and informed them I wanted all residents on the water system called. I soon learned the very next day through the next week that not all water customers were called.

The clerk did contact the village insurance and then I, chairperson and the other entire Trustees dealt with the insurance company.

No one has ever asked me what the cost was and I can tell them.

Ask any trustee and they will tell you the truth!!

June:

The Trustees are beginning to get to the fact and South Greenfield is in a spiral spin downward due to previous boards only paying bill and not planning for breakdowns and contract requirement, decrease in population and last but not least too big of a system put in to start with for both water and sewer projects.

Yes, one employee did resign and yes one was laid off. This board of Trustees voted on cutbacks to help save money and is looking in different areas for labs to do testing/different options of where to get the products the Village must have for all the DNR regulations. Trustees have volunteered to read meters to save the Village money. Act as Clerk until someone can be found to do the job. We believe in hiring local people so that when issues arise we can address them immediately.

July: The water tower inspection was rescheduled to now because of what happened in May. We have “no” pressure relief valves in our water tower. Our water oper-

ator had to reschedule and do it differently.

Andy Miller, our water operator, protected the Village. We appreciate everything he does for us. This was the first time the water tower was cleaned and inspected since built, everything was good.

The cost was $1,250.00 to have the inspection and cleaning and was paid for out of the CD we had to cash due to a shortfall from the 2013 billing. And by the way, it is going to be very hard for the Village to replace that CD. August: Village Trustees voted to change banks due to all of the service fees. Village business will be with Bank of Ash Grove. People who listen to all gain, those who don’t get twisted facts. Come to a board meeting and hear the truth.

The FEMA money that one resident and myself worked on to apply for through the help of Bob Kitsmiller came in and the Village has a plan for the necessary work and will be taking bids on.

Make Safety Part Of Your Labor Day Weekend Plans Submmi ed by Cheryl D. Cobb Public Informa on Specialist III Public Informa on and Educa on Division Missouri State Highway Patrol

Colonel Ronald Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, reminds Missouri’s travelers to make safety part of their Labor Day weekend. Col. Replogle strongly urges the use of seat belts when traveling in any kind of vehicle and life jackets when on a Missouri lake, river, or stream.

In 2013, eight people were killed and 404 injured in Missouri over the Labor Day holiday in 967 traffic crashes. Of that total, troopers worked 248 traffic crashes, which included 112 injuries and five of the fatalities over the 2013 Labor Day holiday. Troopers arrested 119 people for driving while intoxicated during last year’s holiday weekend.

The 2014 counting period for the Labor Day

holiday will be from 6 p.m., Friday, August 29, through 11:59 p.m., Monday, September 1.

The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) over the Labor Day holiday weekend. All available officers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways enforcing Missouri’s speed limit, seat belt, and alcohol laws, in addition to being available to assist motorists.

Troopers throughout the state will participate in a 20-Mile Trooper operation on August 29 and again on September 1.

This operation will include Interstates 29, 44, 55, and 70, and U.S. Highways 60 and 61. Troopers will be targeting all traffic violations, and be especially vigilant of aggressive driving violations.

Col. Replogle reminds the public that the Labor Day holiday is a

busy boating weekend. In 2013, there were nine boating crashes with seven injuries and zero fatalities. There were no drownings. Troopers arrested 14 people for boating while intoxicated during last year's counting period. In an effort to increase safety on our state’s waters, all available officers will be working over the holiday weekend.

Missouri’s boaters are asked to do their part by remaining alert for other boats and swimmers, and being courteous on the water.

With more boats on the water, it is even more important to pay attention when operating a vessel.

Remember: If you choose to drink alcohol, don’t operate a vessel. Alcohol consumption slows reaction time. Pay attention to the boats around you and ask your passengers to assist with this.

Evasive maneuvers should be made early and

deliberately. Check your vessel’s navigation lights before heading out at night, and be sure to have spare bulbs on board.

Avoid overloading your boat with too many passengers, and observe Missouri’s nighttime speed limit of 30 miles per hour on the water.

“Please buckle up in your vehicle and wear a life jacket on or near water. I would like to take a few minutes every week if possible to communicate with the patrons of the Greenfield R-IV School District. We have so many positive people and programs here at Greenfield and Dade County that it is important to get the good word out to the public.

This is my fourth year as your superintendent of schools in Greenfield. I feel very fortunate that some of the directions we initiated that first year are still going and in some cases still gaining momentum.

Our in town bus route is unique to the Greenfield School District and has served the patrons protecting our students and giving patrons flexibility in their daily schedule.

Every student K-12 may ride the school bus in our district. We have added a bigger bus for this project to accommodate the amount of patrons that use this service for their kids.

Four years ago one of our most important concerns was the ability to secure our buildings and protect all of our students. We started out with eight video cameras and Magnet locks for few main entrance doors. For the start of this school year we have implemented 64 camera system that will cover every building in the district when we are completed

with this project. At present we have 18 cameras in the High School and junior High and have coded door access in the four main doors in the High School and Junior High. With due diligence from our staff we have control access of the Elementary and Junior and High Schools. The plan is to have coded access on all doors in the future.

Four years ago we also made long term plans in increasing our Pre-School Programs. We started with the one class of 4 year olds and since then raised those numbers to the ability of having 20 four year olds and 20 three year olds. We feel starting our kids early in our education programs will reap huge benefits in the future.

Where other districts are charging some type of tuition we feel it is important enough to our patrons and future of our school district we offer this service at NO COST! All of these services would not be possible without the support of the Board of education and the patrons of our great community. Greenfield HISET Classes Greenfield HISET Classes will start on Thursday, September 4, at the Dade County Health Department Lobby from 5:30 to 8:30.

Fall classes will meet during the months of September, October, and November 2014.

HISET is the name of the high school equivalency test once referred to as GED. Missouri State Department of Education no longer has a contract with GED testing.

Students will need to bring their

social security number, a notebook, a pen or pencil, an email address, and their current mailing address.

Eagle Scout Advancement for Enoch Bradshaw Dade County Republican Women Host Submi ed by Hil Downey

Boy Scout Troop 78, Stockton, Missouri Frontier District Ozark Trails Council Boy Scouts of America A Court of Honor for Boy Scout Troop 78 of Stockton, Missouri was held on Thursday, August 14, 2014.

The Court of Honor recognizes the achievements of individual Boy Scouts that have met the requirements for advancement in rank.

The highlight of Thursday night’s Court of Honor was the advance-

ment of Enoch Bradshaw to the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank achievable by a scout.

Enoch continued a family tradition by achieving the rank of Eagle Scout a year after his brother, Mathew, achieved his Eagle rank in Stockton Troop 78.

To achieve this rank a scout must perform a community service project.

Enoch Bradshaw planned, developed, and led members of his Troop in a service project which improved the trail system

in the Stockton State Park.

In his quest for Eagle Scout, Enoch Bradshaw earned 19 merit badges, advanced from the rank of Tenderfoot through Life Scout, served at least six months in troop leadership positions, completed his scoutmaster conference, and a board of review by members of the District Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Boy Scout Troop 78 is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in Stockton, Missouri.

Konarski A ends APCO Annual Conference Submi ed by Office Manager Dade County 911

Cheryl Konarski, a dispatch supervisor, communications training officer and full-time dispatcher with Dade County Emergency Services in Greenfield, Missouri recently attended the APCO (Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials) 80th Annual Conference and Expo in New Orleans, Louisiana, August 3rd6th.

This conference brings together public safety communications professionals from all 50 states as well as 17 countries.

Cheryl was awarded a scholarship from APCO to attend the conference and also volunteered, earning free entrance into classes and other events held daily throughout the conference.

This year, over 5,200 people attended this year’s conference. Attendees were able to choose from 108 classes scheduled over the four day period, as well as the

Opening General Session, which featured guest speaker and football legend, Archie Manning, who spoke on leadership.

The Distinguished Achievers Breakfast featured Captain Richard Phillips, who shared his powerful story of leadership, sacrifice and perseverance after being kidnapped by Somalia pirates. There two General Business Session meetings and a Food for Thought Luncheon featuring guest speaker, Chef Jeff Henderson, who shared his life lessons that he gained on his redemptive journey from drug dealer to TV celebrity chef.

Also offered to attendees were the opportunities to visit local 911 communications centers, some of which were rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina and have some of the latest equipment and software in the industry.

The APCO Conference gives attendees the opportunity to attend a number of education ses-

sions that are directly applicable to the 911 and communications community and provides opportunities to network with a variety of association experts and colleagues from around the world.

Classes covering everything from leadership training to location accuracy in 911 calls to texting to 911 to SWAT communications were offered, giving attendees a wide variety to choose from.

In addition, vendors from around the country setup at the event, providing information on the latest gadgets, trends, topics and training opportunities. This yearly conference is a coveted event and a wonderful learning opportunity.

As a member of the Missouri Training Partnership, which purchased the recordings and presentations, Cheryl was able to bring back all 108 classes offered at the conference to share with co-workers.

She will also be able to use the information learned during the conference to create future training classes for students throughout the state.

Cheryl would like to thank APCO and their industry partners for the scholarship award and also to the APCO Conference Committee for providing the opportunity to volunteer at the conference to cut down on expenses; to her co-workers Kelley, Raymond, Charles and Brian for helping to cover shifts while she was gone; to her director, Lori, for giving her the time to attend; and to the Dade County Emergency Services board members for their support. She looks forward to the opportunity to attend future conferences.

Dade County 911 is very proud of Cheryl and the efforts she makes toward training for our center!

The Dade County Republican Women furnished food for the August Birthday Party at the Dade County Nursing Home recently. Peggy Horton, Anita Bridges, Lisa Julian and Mindy Lollar brought dessert dishes to help celebrate those birthdays. A rousing round of the happy birthday song was sung to all those having a birthday.

Worthington Is Elected Angus Delegate To 131th Annual Meeting Submi ed by Angus News

Josh Worthington, Dadeville, Missouri, has been elected as a delegate to the 131th Annual American Angus Association®Convention of Delegates, November 6 at the KCI Expo Center in Kansas City, Missouri, reports Bryce Schumann, CEO of the American Angus Association.

Worthington, a member of the American Angus Association with headquarters in Saint Joseph, Missouri, is one of 317 Angus breeders who have been elected by fellow members in their state to serve as a repre-

sentative at the annual meeting. Representing 42 states, District of Columbia and Canada, the delegates will participate in the business meeting and elect new officers and five directors to the American Angus Association board.

The annual meeting will take place in conjunction with the 2014 Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show, Nov. 4-6, in Kansas City, Mo. The first-ever event is open to anyone in the cattle business and will feature high-profile keynote speakers; educational sessions, featuring thought leaders from

every industry sector; Angus University, sponsored by Merck Animal Health; entertainment; evening galas; prize giveaways; and an expansive trade show.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Put on your jeans and boots and come celebrate our agricultural heritage in an historical setting and help honor the Century Farms in Greene County. The first annual “Salute to Century Farms” will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at the Round Barn Event Center along Clear Creek, 10731 W. US Hwy 160, Walnut Grove.

The event location is historically known as the Octagonal Barn and is located 3.5 miles east of Ash Grove on Hwy. 160 (northwest of Springfield). The barn was built in 1880 and is probably the earliest polygonal or round barn in Missouri. It

is the largest known barn of its type in the state and is the only one with full stone wall construction.

During the event, Greene County Extension will honor those being named “Century Farms” this year. An hour of musical entertainment will be provided by Acoustic Essays, a traditional bluegrass and classic country band that has played at many area venues including Silver Dollar City. Attendees will be treated to a full meal provided by Maggie Mae’s Catering from Miller.

Our guest speaker will be David Baker, assistant dean of agriculture extension at the University of Missouri. He will discuss the 100 year history of Cooperative Extension and the challenges facing family

farms in the coming 15-20 years.

All proceeds will benefit Greene County Extension.

HONORED FARMS Farms in Greene County being recognized as Century Farms include for 2014 are Charles and Katherine Buckner of Fair Grove. We will also recognize the 2013 farms at this year’s event: Robert and Mary Mays of Ash Grove; John and Doris Breakbill of Republic; and Warren D. Hardy Jr. of Rogersville.
