New Salon Opens In Greenfield

Dade County Staff Listening Post Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) announces a 4th Congressional District listening post has been scheduled for Tuesday, August. 26, 2014, from 4 to 5 p.m., at the Dade County Library in Greenfield.

Greenfield HISET Classes Begins September 4 Greenfield HISET Classes will start on Thursday, September 4, at the Dade County Health Department Lobby from 5:30 to 8:30. Fall classes will meet during the months of September, October, and November 2014.

HISET is the name of the high school equivalency test once referred to as GED. Missouri State Department of Education no longer has a contract with GED testing.

Students will need to bring their social security number, a notebook, a pen or pencil, an email address, and their current mailing address. If additional information is needed, you may call 417637-2345 and talk with Jill.

Enrollment forms will be filled out and a number of placement tests will be given before instruction begins. You will need to attend at least 12 classroom hours before you plan to take the Missouri HISET test.

A new salon has opened its doors to Greenfield and the surrounding area.

M. Hair Studio, located at 305 North Grand Street, will be offering full hair care in a relaxed atmosphere. They will be offering services to men, women and children, catering to everyone’s individual taste.

The salon owner, Marissa (Vaughn) Castlebury is a 2007 graduate of Greenfield and a 2008 graduate of Missouri College of Cosmetology.

Marissa has worked as a stylist in the Greenfield area for the last 3 1/2 years. Before working in Greendfield, she worked at The Hair Place in Mount Vernon and Ambiance Salon in

Springfield.

Marissa, daughter of Rick and Laura Vaughn of South Greenfield, couldn’t be more excited to be opening a business in her hometown. She and her husband, Rocky, currently reside in Mount Vernon where they are expecting their first child in November.

Whatever hair services you need, M. Hair Studio has you covered.

A wide range of services are offered including haircuts, perms, single to multi-dimensional colors, special occasion styles and waxing.

19-Year-Old Injured In One-Vehicle Crash Story and photo by Cle s McConnell Vede e Reporter

A 19-year-old Greenfield young lady was injured in a one-vehicle crash early Thursday, August 14, 2014, on O Hwy., .07 mile east of Hwy. 160, near Everton.

Amilia Wilkins was westbound in a 2004 Ford Escort at 7:30 a.m. whens she lost control, veered to the right and overturned, Dade County authorities said.

Wilkins was ejected from the vehicle and was airlifted to Cox South hospital in Springfield for treatment. No other injuries reported.

Responding to the scene was Wreck-OMended, Greenfield.

Investigating the accident was Dade County Sheriff Max Huffman and Deputy Selvy.

Nadine Fern Hixon

Thomas A. Nance

Nadine Fern (Charles) Hixon, 86, departed this life on August 17, 2014, in Springfield, Missouri, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Her kind gentle spirit belongs to the ages and she is now an angel among us.

She is survived by her son Billy E. and his wife, Carolin, of Springfield; her only grandchild Christine A. Smiley and her husband, Ken, of Lewisville, Texas; two great-grandsons, Nolan K. Smiley and Trevor M. Smiley, also of Lewisville, Texas; her brother Leon Charles; her sister-in-law Ruth Charles; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; her loving caregivers Mike and Sandy Meyers and their children, Anna, Michael, and Austin; and a host of long-time farm and city friends and neighbors.

Nadine was born on January 31, 1928, in Bowers Mill, Missouri, the youngest of four children of Cecil Fate Charles and Ruby May (Arthur) Charles.

Her parents were storekeepers and her father was also a farmer and an auctioneer.

Nadine grew up at Grey’s Point and attended Lockwood High School.

On June 17, 1946, Nadine married Bobby Arthur Hixon and to this union two sons,

Thomas A. Nance, age 72 years of South Greenfield, Missouri, passed away on Friday, August 15, 2014, at 3:00 am at Cox South in Springfield, Missouri.

Tom was born to Eric and Winona Nance on September 6, 1941 in Hood River, Oregon. He grew up as the second youngest of eight siblings.

After high school graduation, Tom served in the United States Marines. Tom had the opportunity to work for many years in construction doing what he loved to do best: building homes.

Tom married his sweetheart, Betty, on October 20, 1972, in Vancouver Washington. After retiring in 1996, Tom and Betty traveled and enjoyed their time with family and eventually settled in Missouri, where Tom began to rebuild their dream home they had originally built in Oregon during their first years of marriage.

Tom was an avid builder who lived his passion every day of his life.

The Mary Circle met in the Choir Room at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Thursday, August 7, at 7:00 p.m. The Theme for the evening was Patriotic and School Days. As guests arrived they were seated at a large table and red napkins and red silverware, assorted cookies, nuts and candies were passed around to everyone and then a DQ sheet cake with three flavors of ice cream and topped with miniature flag was served the fourteen present.

Nadine was farm partner with Bobby and also, in the 1950’s, helped Bobby and his parents, Homer and Pansy Hixon, operate Midway Café and Service Station on old US Route 66 near Avilla.

In 1955, Bobby and Nadine bought a farm between the rural Lawrence County towns of Grey’s Point and Red Oak. Over the next forty-five years, Bobby and Nadine increased their farm to 350 acres and to over 100 head of cattle. She was a tireless farm wife and mother who rarely sat down. She enjoyed working in her garden, attending her sons’ ballgames, and bowling with Bobby and friends. She was also a long-time and loyal member of the Grey’s Point Christian Church.

In 1998, Bobby and Nadine retired from farming and moved to Springfield. Nadine collected glassware and rocks of all types during travels throughout the United States, and enjoyed shopping, traveling and, in later years, attending Missouri State University Men’s Basketball games.

Nadine was preceded in death by Bobby, her husband of 66 years; her parents; her son, James

Burial followed at Red Oak Cemetery. May she now rest in peace.

The closing prayer was a prayer for our Christian Immanuel School. A fun quiz was enjoyed by each one and each lady gave their answer to one question.

Doris Niehoff brought our attention to several deaths and other pertinent facts and mites and offerings were taken.

Fellowship followed and everyone enjoyed the evening. Those present were the following: Linda Schilling, Agnes Shaw, Mary Rusch, Florence Clark, Janice Patterson, Doris Niehoff, Emma Cassity, Phyllis Obert, Shirley Mein, Eloise Haubein, Bea Roncovitts, Olga Eggerman, Natalie Wehrman and Marcel Maupin of Edmond, Oklahoma.

He enjoyed teaching and loved taking care of others. He could turn anything into a life lesson in the form of a story. He was patient with everyone he met and most of all, with those he loved.

He was a naturally hard working man and instilled that in his children and grandchildren.

He believed in doing things right the first time or not at all and was never hesitant to share his knowledge with those who listened. His words came from his heart and his joy was always soul deep.

We will forever miss his knee slapping laugh that was so contagious.

We will always remember his smile with his wiggling eyebrows that would brighten the room every time he walked in.

Tom's kindness was known by all, and he would make a friend out of everyone he met. We will miss his sense of humor, his enveloping hugs, and most of all, his unconditional love.

Although he is gone from our lives, we will see his love and legacy in

everything he left behind, for he built it all to keep his family safe.

Tom was truly an inspirational man and we know that he is already working with God to build his family a house in heaven to welcome us all to when it is our turn to come home.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Betty, of 43 years; his four daughters: Diane and her husband, Brad; Jan and her husband, David; Shauna, Sandy; his son, Darrell; and five grandchildren.

Tom's wishes were no services to be held.

Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of the Greenfield Funeral Chapel.

A memorial service, under the care and direction of Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home was held on Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at the Elm Branch Christian Church. Larry will be interred at the Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio, Missouri at a later date.

Mabees Celebrate 60th Anniversary Reception for McMasters

Dr. and Mrs. Clarence E. Mabee of Lockwood, Missouri, will celebrate 60 years of marriage on September 4, 2014.

Clarence E. Mabee and Laura L. Westbay were united in marriage at City Methodist Church, in Gary, Indiana.

They have been blessed with three chil-

dren: William R. Mabee of Columbia, Missouri; Linda L. Lynch and husband, Craig, of Joplin, Missouri; and Carol L. Jones of Chesterfield, Missouri.

They have four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Their children and grandchildren will be hosting a come and go cel-

ebration reception in honor of their anniversary on Saturday, August 30, 2014, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church Family Life Center in Lockwood, Missouri.

Harold McMasters, pastor of Main Street Baptist Church in Greenfield, will be retiring on Sunday, August 31, 2014.

Bro. Harold will have completed 21 years at Main Street and a total of 56 years in ministry.

Although technically retired, Bro. Harold will continue to be used of

God for pulpit supply and interims.

Livestock Producers May be Eligible for Drought Compensation

Did you own livestock in 2012? What a year that was! Pastures and ponds dried up. Hay was a hot commodity and in some cases, hard to find. Things may have looked pretty bleak at the time. Fast forward to the passage of the 2014 Farm Bill with legislation authorizing the Livestock Forage Disaster Assistance Program (LFP).

The Farm Bill provided retroactive authority to cover grazing losses

back to Oct. 1, 2011. If you owned livestock during this time, you may be eligible for payment through the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA). Sign up for LFP began in April and I encourage livestock producers who have not applied to contact their local FSA county office as soon as possible.

Drought compensation payments are equal to 60 percent of the monthly feed cost for up to five months. FSA calculates LFP payments based on

head of eligible livestock owned or leased at the time of the drought or by the carrying capacity of the grazing land.

Eligible livestock include beef and dairy cattle, alpacas, buffalo, beefalo, deer, elk, emus, equine, goats, llamas, poultry, reindeer, sheep and swine that would have been grazing during the drought. The class met on August 13, 2014, at Ryan’s Cafe on South Campbell, Springfield at 1:30 p.m. with all of the area classmates in attendance.

Applying for the program is fairly simple. FSA will have you certify the number of acres and types of forage and the number of head of livestock you owned or leased in 2012. In some counties, there was a qualifying drought event also 2011 and 2013. Your

local office will be able to tell you how many months will be used in your payment calculation.

1st Annual Busy Bee 4-H Small Animal Show The Busy Bee 4-H club will be hosting a small animal show in the American Legion lot during Lockwood's September Days on Saturday, September 20. The show is open to all youth ages 8-18, showing rabbits, poultry, goats and sheep. Ages 57 may participate for fun (poultry or rabbits only), but will not be judged. Check-in begins at 8am with judging to start at 9am. Awards will be given to 1st and 2nd place in each category.

Gone but not forgotten.

I keep thinking each week things will slow down but if anything it just keeps getting more hectic & busier.

Last Monday, my Dad, Buster Hargis, was in Clinton looking at a tractor when he caught his boot under the bucket and down he went. Talk about a black eye he sure has one. It cut a gash in his eyebrow but he didn't want to have stitches and I guess he scared them to death with all the bleeding he did. His hand and wrist are still really swollen but I guess it was just a bad sprang. Anyway this old cowboy

says he will be fine. I teased him and said if he didn't stop getting hurt I was going to reserve him a room at the Nursing Home. Haha!

Jack Myers Sr. is now a resident at the Greenfield Nursing Home and loves to get visitors.

Rex West is still there too and receives lots of company.

Last Tuesday, Leon White had some out patient testing done and if you don't know Leon this was a real challenge for him. He is petrified of needles and they had to start an iv on him. But Tina said he done great and is taking medicine for an ulcer around his esophagus for 2 weeks.

Then back to have it checked. He sure is missing his spicy foods though.

While there, they ran into Nancy Shanahan who was having some test run and Sharon Pierce was her driver.

Last Tuesday, I went from Republic straight to Nixa to babysit Miss Lucy. We had a really good day together.

Lynn & Bailey Beeson have been on vacation and rode the Amtrak to Racine, Wisconsin with Lynn's sister and then they stayed with her niece. They took lots of wonderful pictures and had a great time.

I want to extend sympathy to Chrissy

Welch on the loss of her dad, Mark Allen, 64 of Clever. His service was last Saturday in Puxico, Mo. Last Wednesday, I took Uncle Bob Myers back to his Parkinson doctor and she said he was doing alright. Just to continue what we are doing. We stopped long enough to get a bite at McDonald's and then back to Dade County we came. You know him and Dad don't like to get out of the county very often.

Saturday, Mom, Aunt Carol & I went to Dave Waldo's auction barn in Greenfield. We always say we aren't going to buy anything but you know that never happens.

Rick Baker has been battling a horrible sinus/allergy problem of some kind. Went to a specialist in Springfield last Tuesday and are trying some new medicine. If he doesn't get to feeling better soon they are going to have to do something else.

Greenfield school starts Monday so watch out for that river of tears from all those little ones leaving their Mommy's and some of the parents will shed some too, I'm sure. It feels really weird not having no children in school any more.

Also there is a lot of parents in our area sending their kids off to col-

lege this week and cutting that string loose is really hard sometimes. I wish them all the best.

Sunday, Mom & I decided to fry chicken for Stormy's birthday dinner.

She made pecan & raisin creme pies and we all enjoyed lunch together. I dropped Uncle Bob some off on the way home.

Mom & Dad and my family along with Chelsey Martin took it all in.

Three generations of one family went floating this weekend at the Nianqua River Oasis, Joni Hickey, daughter-Kristy Hampshire-Galloway and her daughter-Whitney Campbell-Bradford along with lots of others.

From the looks of the wild colored wigs & outfits they had a great time.

I think Joni must be marking off her bucket list since she went skydiving, farris wheel riding & now floating. Can't wait to see what she does next. Maybe her & Lavern will buy them a Harley Motorcycle!!

G r a n d d a u g h t e r, Mayce Baker had to make a trip to the ER over the weekend. She cut her little toe really bad and had to have 8 stitches in it. It looked like it was really going to be sore. We wish her a speedy recovery. What's funny was she had the same lady that sewed up her knee last year. I told

her she was going to have more battle scars than her older brother, Jayce.

Stormy's classmate, Haus Emery just got through boot camp in the Navy and was enjoying some beach time over the weekend in Pensacola, Florida. Way to go Haus!!

Todd Decker and the First Baptist Church of Neosho sang the National Athem at the Springfield Cardinals game Sunday night.

Great job!

Was sorry to hear Rodney DeHart had a wreck but thankfully wasn't hurt. Can't same the same for this vehicle.

Rod & Cheryl O'Connor are happy to be back home for a while.

Rod's kidney surgery went well and now he just has to take it easy while he heals up. So sit back and do what Cheryl tells you for once!! Ha Ha!! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Logan Baker was happy to come home with First Place in the Trail Horse Competition riding his favorite horse, Cougar sponsored by the Everton Saddle Club Saturday. Dennis Reese came in 2nd and Chris Elbe got 3rd. Congratulations to these riders and their mounts!

The President of the Chamber of Commerce claims that if the G.O.P. leadership doesn’t help enact immigration reform, they shouldn’t run a candidate in 2016!

G.O.P. past presidential candidate and present Senator of Arizona, John McCain, says without action of some kind on immigration reform, it won’t matter who the G.O.P. nominates.

The Hispanic vote will be somewhere north of 15%. Go figure!

Regardless of your political beliefs and affiliation, it will be hard to name an individual that can appease both sides of the political system in this country and get anything accomplished!

The system seems to be dysfunctional at all levels of government!

Remember, Gore and Bush were in a debate a few years back, arguing about how to spend the surplus?

My, how things have changed!!

Saturday, my good friends, Wanda and Joanne, took me to Springfield for my appointment at Lens Crafters. I’m having vision problems.

There, I had more tests and this Saturday I go back for more consultation. It’s beginning to look like nothing can be done. Also, I’ve been to a Joplin doctor. What would I do without friends?

Something came up Sunday that kept me from attending church.

As Pastor Travis is

on two weeks vacation, it was Youth Sunday with the youth in charge of the worship. I did not get her name, but the guest speaker was a teenager from Mt. Vernon who is interested in missions.

Monday, I was back to my medical doctor. My feet are swelling. This hasn’t happened for years. Also, I have bursitis in my left elbow that I keep wrapped.

Next month, I will celebrate my 90th birthday. Am I falling apart before I hit 90?

Most Saturday

mornings, my newspaper will be on a table on my porch for me to pick up. My neighbor has seen the lady, but does not know her. I would say she works and on Saturdays goes for an early morning walk and picks up my paper for me. Another angel! I do appreciate her concern.

Following a difficult delivery, I was in bed for

two weeks and when I got up, I passed out. That was 60 some years back!

Thank goodness it’s different now.

Wednesay night was “meet your teacher” at school. School begins next week. Watch for the kids.

A couple of thoughts: 1) Itching for what you want isn’t enough. You have to scratch for it.

2) Travel can be broadening, especially when the food is good.

Children’s Smile Center To Help Children In Dade County Preventive and primary dental care is now available at Children’s Smile Center for children and pregnant women with active Medicaid from Dade County.

Children’s Smile Center Board of Directors voted at its July meeting to expand the service area to include Dade County.

Previously, children ages 1 to 19 and pregnant women whose dental health coverage was provided by MO HealthNet from Christian, Stone, Barry and Lawrence Counties were qualified to receive full-service dental care at any of Children’s Smile Center’s three locations in Ozark, Branson West or Aurora.

Now Dade County families are eligible to utilize services at Children’s Smile Center.

“We are so pleased to welcome Dade County families into our circle of patients with a clinic that is more convenient and closer to home,” said Jackie Barger, Executive Director of Children’s Smile Center. “Very few dentists accept new Medicaid referrals in our five county service area. We hope the closer proximity of our Aurora location will help families in Dade County ensure the dental needs of their children are met.”

Children’s Smile Center is a nonprofit dental home providing a full spectrum of dental services including cleanings, x-rays, fluoride applications, fillings, extractions and root canals. Medi-

caid coverages allows a child starting at age 1 through age 19 by a dentist every six months. Pregnant women with Medicaid have coverage throughout their pregnancy, the entire birth month and an additional sixty days.

“Dental care is cited as the most common unmet need in children,” said Barger. “Tooth decay remains at the top of the list of most common childhood diseases every year which is sad because tooth decay – or cavities – are largely preventable. Regular dental visits combined with proper oral hygiene habits at home, that is brushing twice a day and flossing, can drastically reduce the need for urgent or emergency dental care due to pain. It also affects so many other aspects of a child’s life including school attendance, grades, behavior and confidence.”

Children’s Smile Center is a nonprofit organization providing general dentistry to thousands of children from low-income families.

Last year the agency’s three clinics provided 10,809 dental visits serving 5,094 children and pregnant women.

In addition to Medicaid reimbursement, Children’s Smile Center relies on the generosity of the community for funding through donations, special events and foundation grants.

Last week I told you about an important event in my life: the night I learned what salvation really was about. You see, I had lived my life believing that God—although loving—was kind of capricious in that what I did would determine whether I would enter heaven or not. The salvation provided by God was only good for a limited time and could be set aside at any time, depending on my actions.

I shared last week that a young college girl unwittingly witnessed to me, her supervisor. She didn’t witness with words, at first, but rather with a pleasant, cooperative spirit and by bringing her Christian books with her to work and leaving them at the supervisor’s desk. When there was no one in the back with me, I would pick up her books and leaf through them for clues as to why she was so different. And I found them.

agement today and to help you understand a little better the benefits of a relationship with Christ.

It doesn’t depend on you. I spent those first 21 years of my life thinking that my ticket to heaven (or somewhere else) was dependent on what I did, how I acted, thoughts I had. Of course, I had to make the decision to submit to Christ’s saving work, but my entry into heaven was set once I did so.

Paul underlines this truth when he says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The only thing God asks is that we give ourselves to Him. The work is already done. “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us (Romans 8:34). The work of salvation was completed on the cross.

We are in a process.

Are we perfect? By no means! But we are being transformed, changed into the image of our Savior, Jesus Christ. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” Romans 12:2.

It is time to step out in faith. Knowing that each of these things is true, it is necessary that we make some changes in our lives as a testimony to what God is doing in us.

Have you come to know Christ as your Savior?

What difference has it made in your life, in your thinking, in your relationships with others? You may believe you are unable to make a difference in someone else’s life, that you are not strong enough, but it takes very little of your own strength to be a witness when you are depending on Christ.

I’d like to share a poem I wrote many years ago that illustrates our part in following Christ. I wrote it for a woman who was going to be the first female Army paratrooper chaplain. I hope it blesses you, but most of all, that it encourages you as you walk with God.

“A soldier, me? My Lord,” said he, “my strength is very small.”

“My child, it’s not your strength I ask I only ask your all.”

“A soldier, me? My Lord,” said she, “I have no sword to shine.”

“My child, your sword would never do, so I will give you mine.”

“A soldier, me? My Lord,” said he, “No shield have I to hold.”

“My child, behind the shield of faith in Me you will be bold.”

“A soldier, me? My Lord,” said she, “What cause shall I defend?”

“My child, the message of my Son, His coming and the end.”

Ruth Jennings Wilson Celebrates 97th Birthday Story and photo by Cle s McConnell Vede e Reporter

Ruth Jennings Wilson celebrated her 97th birthday Sunday, August 17, at Mt. Olive Church, following church services with many of her friends and relatives.

Ruth was born August 18, 1917, to Anna and Harry Jennings at Sand Hill in Dade County.

She attended Shaw Grade School and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1935.

Ruth married to Paul D. Wilson in 1937 and taught at the Shaw Grade School where she attended.

The family lived in California, for five years during the great depression and then moved back to Greenfield. Their only child, Lo Ann Wilson (Trask) was born in Lindsey, California in 1939.

Ruth has two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Ruth has been very active throughout her life.

FORGET-ME NOTS by Gail Leaming Busy week this week with the Lamar Fair and getting ready for Jasper’s and the Freedom Fest.

On top of that, the day after I get the pic line out Ron goes into the Cox South Hospital.

That is a daily trip and stay with him. Still trying to figure out what is wrong with his foot. They don’t have a good MRI on the bone in it. Hope they try another picture.

Evelyn Gasper came down from K.C. to see Clea, Kamala, Anastazia, and me for a couple of days. Ate at the Hangar. Seems to be a tourist draw.

Evelyn and Clea said they enjoyed the nurses at McCune Brooks as much as I did.

Linda and Cherie’ Bailey spoiled me rotten. Grandpa Otis should sure be proud

this last two months.

This one in Springfield is the 4th one. A big thank you goes out to Cesare who called in the troops to help get Ron to the hospital.

Lynette said he called in Jay and Chi-Chi who both had bad backs and me of course who only had one arm so she of course drove over to help and it took all of us. Kahl and Joel were helping with doors and dogs.

I did get to play a few minutes at Red Oak 2 before my arm said enough but what a joy to be back.They really made me feel like I had been missed.

Eudene Murphy is leaving this week to go hunting in Alaska and won’t be back for three weeks. Oh the envy to go to Alaska, but Ron

Kenneth was getting around pretty good with that knee.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But again some of life is just as well forgotten. And, eventually, I remember the important things.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray and to have had my youthful laughs be forever etched deep into grooves on my face.

So many have never laughed and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive.You care less about what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I even earned the right to be wrong.

I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever but while I am still here I will not waste time lamenting what could have been or worrying about what will be.

The route will begin in Ash Grove, Missouri, then travel down Highway 160 to Everton and Greenfield, then south on Highway 39 to Miller and Mt. Vernon.

From there, you will travel along Highway H on the outer road to Highway 97 to Pierce City, Monett, and Aurora.

From Aurora, you will travel on Highway 265 to Marionville, Crane, Galena and Reeds Spring to Highway 13 and ending in Branson West.

Missouri Department of Transportation has given permission to set up your booth along the prescribed route for one day only.

Before setting up, be sure to ask permission of any business or landowners where you want to set up.

Be mindful to pick a spot with ample parking so as not to cause any traffic problems. Be extremely cautious of traffic and pedestrian safety.

Be aware, we cannot attach our sale signs to any traffic signs or privately owned signs.

Pickup your trash and remove your signage when finished.

This can be a great fundraiser for schools, churches and other organizations.

ANTIOCH PILGRIM NEWS by Lesia Jones Week of August 8 Boy, do we need some nice slow rain. It is really dry. And then on Thursday morning, I heard that wonderful rain falling and drove all the way to work in rain.

Kim Jones and Brent Grisham left on Friday morning for another coon hunt in Illinois. Kim said they did o.k, but nothing to brag about. Got to meet up with a lot of his coon hunting buddies. I think that is really what he goes for. They returned on Sunday late afternoon.

I took off work Friday so I could play around. I got to enjoy the day playing in my yard. It is a never ending event, but I do enjoy it. That is the sign I’m getting older.

On Friday night, Suzanne Steeley came to my house and we enjoyed supper and lots of visiting. After she left, Wade and Chloe came and spent the night with me. Somehow Chloe ended up in my bed and I fought all night to keep her feet out of my face. She is all over that bed.

On Saturday and Sunday morning, Dustin and Jacob helped Asa work his cattle.

Wade, Chloe and myself went with Kelbey Bowles to Springfield to look at appliances. They are getting their work sheet done for the builder.

While out shopping, the little ones got to wrestling and needless to say down they went

and Chloe fell on Wade and knocked her two front teeth loose. I told Dustin they have the worst luck with teeth. I think they need to take the kids and get mouth guards put in their mouths. The only good thing is they are her baby teeth. She cried and I almost got sick not thinking it was her baby teeth.

Melinda and Dustin came and got the kids around 4:30 on Saturday to take them to a pool party. I headed to Mt. Vernon to get a load of mulch. Got it unloaded and went back Sunday afternoon and got another one.

On Sunday, got the rest of the mulch out.

Kim got to help me for a few minutes. Kelbey and Asa came down for supper.

On Saturday night, Jacob and Abby Jones, Asa and Kelbey Bowles went to the Springfield fair. Jaime and Brian White had planned on going, but they had just gotten home from a week long cruise with all of her family and they were ready to be home.

On Sunday afternoon, Abby and Jacob finally got chickens put in their new coop. Had to laugh when you drive by their house, there are two chairs sitting by the coop. They are bird watching. I knew Jacob was just like his granddad Johnny.

He would sit for hours and watch the chickens, quail, turkey or what ever he was raising at the time.

urday the 9 at Hulston Mill. Allen graduated with Kim. They ran around together for years and were little crazy. Kim had lots of stories regarding the senior stand at the Everton Picnic.

Continue to keep the families of Virginia Lowry in your prayers.

Families of Inez Wilkerson, families of Rick Starkey and also Jesse Jackson who was at the Everton school for several years and his children all attended Everton. They all need our prayers at this difficult time.

Kim went to the lake and picked up Wade and Chloe and took them coon hunting for little while. Chloe decided she needed to go to see what all the fun was about. PaPa’s will do anything for their grandchildren.

Melinda and children were camping at the lake with some of her family. And yes, our children remind us that we would not have done that for them.

How we spoil the grandchildren. It is all because we do not have to live with them day in and day out. This is fun now. No stress.

The fifth Sunday singing was scheduled for August 31 at Kings Point Baptist Church, but that is Labor Day weekend and they have decided to change it to the last Sunday evening of September.

So be sure and mark your calendars.

I wish to thank the Dade County Nursing Home staff and workers and Dade County Ambulance Service when I became critically ill in just a few minutes and had to be rushed to the critical unit at Cox South.

On Thursday, I had minor surgery. Friday, my lung collapsed. On Saturday, I had emergency major surgery on my lung.

I’m back home now at the nursing home.

Thanks to the First Christian Church of Greenfield for the prayer shawl, cards, phone calls and flowers.

I have a long and slow recovery ahead but I know

union is August 17 with a basket dinner at 1 at the Everton Community Building. It is always the third Sunday of August. The children of the late Curtis and Betty Vandegrift are the hostess this year. See you there.

The Liberty Ladies Retreat is Saturday August 23. Breakfast starting at 8 and the program begins at 9.

Lunch from 11:30 to 1 and done by 3. Plan to attend. There is not a charge, but they will take a love offering. We have 2 wonderful speakers and 3 different sessions of local musical talent to be enjoyed. Lots of door prizes and a day full of wonderful Christian fellowship. See you there.

Kim and I visited in Kelbey and Asa home on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, Asa started in baling our hay for the second time. He had cut it on Monday and enjoyed lunch with Kim that day. Kim and Asa did some running around on Tuesday and enjoyed lunch out at Lockwood.

On Wednesday, we had another church meeting at Liberty for the Ladies Retreat. We have started bringing in the decorations and making the decorations.

We are so excited about how this is coming together. These little church ladies are quite the workers. You could have heard the laughter afar. Who said Christians couldn’t have fun.

The new preacher will start in a week. Rev. Ken Roller has been filling in for almost a year. He has been a blessing to this church.

Stanley Jones and two of his sisters, Linda and Wanda Kay all flew to California where Stanley’s son, Darren, got married. I know they had a great time.

Peggy Douty Week of August 15 We need more rain, what we got was great, but the ground drank it right up and now we are dry again. Just powder dust when I was moving Thursday night.

Linda and Don Coble, Greg Coble and Lucille Franklin enjoyed lunch with Betty Vandegrift on Saturday. Don came and put a new outside light up for his favorite mother-in-law.

All the son-in-laws have been doing honey do for mom and I think they have her taken care of for awhile.

Melinda Jones and children enjoyed staying at the lake a few days last week. Some of Melinda’s family was also camped there. The last big fun run before school starts. Dustin has been working a lot of overtime and overnight on special projects at work and it is little cooler at that time.

Most of the schools have already started by now. I know the moms are happy and the children were too the first day. Now maybe not so happy. This summer has just flew by. I know that is a sign of old age.

Kim, myself and Jacob have worked off and on all weekend on our rock garage. Tearing off old tin and replacing board. On Monday, Kim picked up supplies and then on Tuesday, Chuck Myers came and worked with Kim all day and they got all the new tin put up and it looks like a new one.

Now he will have to do some other trim work and another project marked off his list.

Abby and Jacob Jones joined us for breakfast on Saturday morning and she brought me a fresh dozen of farm eggs from her new chicken.

She will be a chicken farmer from now on.

We have a lot of fun with that.

On Saturday afternoon, Kim and I attended the memorial service for Allen Hurd

at the Hulston Mill Park. Kim got to talk to Allen’s son, Cody and they got to tell a few stories on Allen. Kim got to see Allen three sisters that were also there. They are all 3 having health issues.

Kim and Allen were always high school buddies and spent a lot of time together. Our deepest sympathy is extended to their whole family.

On Saturday night, Kim loaded up his dog and headed to Clinton, Missouri for another dog hunt. He got home on Sunday morning at 6:30. He really loves to hunt to do what all he does.

On Wednesday night ,the Liberty Ladies had their retreat meeting.

We have started doing the decorations and got a lot put together. This has been fun doing. So don’t forget it will be this Saturday August 23 beginning at 8 with breakfast, program starting at 9. Lunch begins at 11:30. Afternoon program begins at 1 and ends at 3. You are invited to come and spend part of the day or all day and get a wonderful blessing.

We have 2 wonderful speakers coming and their will be 3 music specials. Door prizes though out the day and plenty of good food for all to enjoy.

They had 150 there last year and they want to exceed that. So come out and have a ladies day out. There is not a charge, but they will take a love offering.

God has provided the past 15 years for them.

Kim went hunting on Thursday night at the Dade County Coon Hunter Club. I really do think he is hunting. Ha!!

I mowed the yard and did some reading. I enjoy my special little time alone sometime.

By the time you read this, the Vandegrift Reunion has come and gone again for another year. Thanks to the children and families of the late Curtis and Betty Vandegrift for hosting it this year.

On Wednesday, Lucille Franklin and Betty Vandegrift were in Springfield. Mom said that traffic is really getting crazy. You just have to be a crazy driver to survive. I am working on 30 years driving in that crazy traffic.

So many continue to need our prayers.

Keep Rod O’Conner, Maggie Jones and I understand that Paul Clabough has been undergoing some test.

Glad to read that Rick Baker got another good report. If he needs to gain weight, Carmen maybe should start slipping the half and half in his cereal like Grandma Cora did Grandpa Charley to maintain his weight.

It won’t be long until Labor Day is here.

And some fall days and then old man winter to follow. Are you ready?

To The Community of South Greenfield

Has all reality left your thinking to be replaced by the “Emotion of Me” which is thinking only of yourself?

A recent incident, taken advantage of by the town’s agitating deceiver, points this out.

A resident had a water leak that was determined to be on their side of the meter. The town shut the water off so they could fix it. Now it gets interesting. They didn’t want to pay a plumber or they didn’t want to wait for a plumber, no one knows.

Enter the agitator

and suddenly this person is in a panic. “I don’t have water!” They do have neighbors.

Maybe I have led a more interesting life, but, I remember the well going dry and going to neighbors, springs and the creek for water. Nobody got sick and nobody died.

Having water has become immediate for this resident. Everything must be “right now” and the town must respond immediately.

Repairs are being done by the agitator with no thought given to the

“IF.” (The repair part was given to the resident at no charge by the town.)

The statement was made in this regard, “And the moon will fall to earth.” This shows a total disregard for anything but themselves.

The “IF” is what happens when city property is broken.

Yes, residents have broken meter loops in the past and the city has absorbed the cost. (This means everyone pays through rate adjustment.)

Are they going to pay for the $500-$700 re-

pair cost of a city meter loop instead making everyone pay?

They didn’t want to pay for a plumber. This is what drives the cost of service up and our service costs are already high.

This same resident, fueled I believe by the agitator, exclaims the bills have to be kept down or people will leave.

The reality they refuse to face is that the system must be paid for by meeting an operations budget.

The Board Chair and Clerk of 2013 did not do

this and a reserve CD had to be cashed to cover the expense. This is like having to dip into your savings for retirement and when it is gone, what then? Bankruptcy?

The town can’t get Social Security!

This town, by law, is not allowed to operate for profit. The property tax revenue is barely enough to pay for street lights, a Clerk and what little mowing of right-ofways we get, let alone anything else.

The water/sewer rates must be set at a level that is fair for every-

one and still generate the revenue necessary to ensure safe and proper operation.

And, YES, the moon will fall to earth if you do not! Think about it!

People seem to want to complain about everything and yet want to pay for nothing.

Water and safe living are necessary.

Partying and picnics are not.

The reception was held at Erin’s pavilion at Southwind Park. Tables were centered with round cakes (different flavors) iced in white and green and blue trim. A small picture of the couple and a small blue card holding trivia on each side of each couple provided fun facts about them. At each place small chocolate balls of green or blue were placed and snacks were available before the bridal party ar-

rived. The men carried the ladies into the hall to be seated at the bridal table. A small three tiered cake with rings of blue and green was cut later by the bride and groom and blue punch were shared by them. Ice cream of different flavors was served with the cakes at the tables later (one could get whichever flavor they wished by checking the tables). A video was shown at the rehearsal and the reception and dancing concluded the evening festivities.

Parents of the bride and groom are Rev. James and Denise Hennig, Springfield, IL and Daniel and Kimberly Koch, Lewisburg, PA. Jessica will be teaching English at the Lutheran HS in Evans-

ville, Il and Jake hopes to be a Youth Director. They will be residing in Fults, IL. They plan to honeymoon in the future.

FAMILY EVENTS

By Natalie Wehrman On Thursday, August 7, Marcel Maupin, Edmond, OK, arrived at her mother’s home around 4:00 p.m. to help her with the hosting of Mary Circle at Immanuel that evening and to the driving to go to Springfield, IL for the Hennig wedding festivities.

Natalie and Marcel left Friday morning, August 8 arriving around 4:00 p.m. at their motel in Springfield.

Lots of preparations and other events occurred before the actual wedding date, decorations, cake decorating, flower arranging, trying on tuxes, getting nails and hair done, meals at different places including the Hennig home, swimming, getting aquainted with new friends, fellow-

ship, opening gifts, sharing memories, laughing, sleeping, listening to Nathan play the guitar and singing, playing Seboldt pinochle, etc.

The rehearsal was held on Saturday, August 9, at 4:00 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church with the rehearsal dinner following at the brickhouse Grill & Pub with the Kochs as hosts.

Sunday morning 10:00 a.m. Divine Servicewas attended by some of the guests and the wedding party and families were treated with a light brunch/lunch food provided by Aunts Stephanie and Marcel assisted by Kaylyn. Pictures (lots of them) were taken at various times throughout the day.

The big event started

at 4:00 p.m. for the marriage service of Jessica Leigh Hennig and Jacob Douglas Koch. The alter held several wedding banners, tall candlesticks, white snowball flowers with blue carnations.

Their color scheme was blue and green and the men had green or blue vests, the ladies green short gowns, the bride, a beautiful white gown trimmed with silver and a back braided ribbon of blue. There were six bridesmaids including Jessica’s two sisters, Angela and Michelle, flower girl dressed in white with blue trim, six men including Jake’s brothers, Ben and ring bearer twins, Adam and Ethan. Musicians included Carlo van Ulft, Organist, Marcel Maupin, Flutist, Angela,

SPORTS SCOREBOARD by Bob Jackson The 2014-2015 high school sports season got underway 9-15-14 with football jamborees. The regular season starts this Friday 8-22-14.

FOOTBALL GREENFIELD: The Wildcats, due to lack of players, will compete in 8 -man team action.

They will host the Albany Warriors of Gentry County in northwest Missouri this Friday. Albany has an enrollment of 134 students.

New coach and athletic director, Steve Cole, is trying to schdeule as many games at this late date with teams from northwest Missouri.

Eight-man football results in a wide open offense with scores 50 to 80 points a game.

LOCKWOOD: The Tigers host Liberal in a SRVC conference game.

The Bulldogs are picked last in the conference in preseason votes.

Lockwood will be led by junior quarterback, Ben Schnelle and expect

to see the passing game click. Ethan Bates and Kyle Bouldin will handle the running game.

MILLER: The Cardinals travel to play a strong Marionville team.

Jordan Jack will go both ways, offense and defense and has targets to throw to in a wide open offense.

Marionville is led by junior Jacob La Salle.

ASH GROVE: The Pirates are coming off a 102 season and have 50 boys out for the team. They host non-conference foe, Cabool, who were 0-10 last year. Spencer Rasmussen will lead the Ash Grove offense.

VOLLEYBALL The season starts on Tuesday, August 26, 2014, with Everton at Lockwood and Ash Grove at Miller. Greenfield, with two new coaches, opens their season on 8-28-14 against Class 2 Ash Grove.

SPORTS SHORTS Jordan Jack, senior quarterback, at Miller is

one of the featured players on the cover of the PigSkin Preview Magazine. He won numerous honors for his play on offense and defense in 2013.

In the same magazine, top juniors playing this season include Ben Schnelle, junior QB at Lockwood High school and Jacob La Salle of Marionville.

LAMAR, Mo. -- Jill Scheidt, agronomy specialist with University of Missouri Extension in Barton County, scouted fields east of I-49 along Hwy. 126 on Aug. 13 for the crop scouting program. Scheidt offers this advice from the field.

Pregnancy Check Time for Cows Bred in the Spring Submi ed by Eldon Cole livestock specialist Headquartered in Lawrence County

MT. VERNON, Mo. -The traditional time to pregnancy check beef females is later in the fall at weaning time. However, recent research by beef reproduction specialists shows pregnancy checking in the mid- to latesummer could be the preferred time to check females bred in the spring.

The Missouri ShowMe-Select Heifer Development Program (SMS) requires heifers to be checked by a veterinarian before they’re beyond 90 days into their pregnancy.

More producers are now adopting this timeline even for heifers not in the SMS program and their cows.

“The 90-day check for SMS is required because it enables most veterinarians to age the fetus or embryo more accurately. SMS heifer buyers like this as it aids in planning for calving management.

Many veterinarians use ultrasound to increase their accuracy,” said Eldon Cole, a livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

Based on heifers sold in the November 2013 SMS sale at Joplin Regional Stockyards, 93.4 percent of the actual births occurred within two weeks of the estimated calving date. Cole says later pregnancy checking may only give you a “bred or open” call by your veterinarian or a first, second or thirdtrimester call.

Herds that use early pregnancy testing are able to determine whether the female was bred by artificial insemination if at least 14 days elapsed between AI and cleanup bull exposure.

Fetal sexing is possible by an increasing number of veterinarians who use ultrasound in the 60 to 80 day-bred females. The SMS protocol requires that leptospirosis vaccination be given at the early pregnancy check.

The downside of pregnancy-checking at this time of year is usually hot weather or field

work related.

Hot weather may be avoided by starting earlier in the day, if possible. If the producer has a covered corral that helps, but be sure there’s plenty of air movement and that the cattle are not crowded too tightly for extended time periods.

“Other reasons for working the herd now could be it forces you to run them through the chute and perform other health and management practices. Pinkeye seems to be affecting more herds this year in southwest Missouri. Working the herd gives you the opportunity to treat those in need. Perhaps you could sort the pinkeye victims off to reduce exposure of others in the herd and make it easier to retreat,” said Cole.

Foot rot may be a problem that can be tended to at working time along with other issues.

“If you have spring calving cows and their non-replacement calves have not been given a growth promoting implant this could be a chance to administer it.

Flies may be increasing above the 200 flies per head threshold so spraying or pouring may be in order if fly prevention ear tags are playing out,” said Cole.

Depending on the producer’s targeted calving season, Cole says this is a good time to pull your bull so he won’t be breeding his daughters.

This move helps tighten the age range of your 2015-calf crop and improves uniformity for marketing.

“All in all, it just makes sense to move the preg checking chore two or three months ahead. It may even be easier to get a veterinarian appointment at this time of year,” said Cole.

Amanda is a 2006 graduate from Greenfield High School and recently graduated from Missouri Southern State University with her Bachelors of Health Science in Respiratory Therapy. She is currently an administra-

tive assistant at Lockwood Farmers Exchange.

Tommy is a millwright who repairs feed mills and grain elevators.

He has traveled to various states for work, but within the past few years he has been working as needed at the Lockwood Farmers Exchange, where he met Amanda.

The couple is planning their upcoming wedding that will be held at The Round Barn on Clear Creek on September 13, 2014.

As the result of a lengthy investigation, on Wednesday August 12th, officers from the Dade County Sheriff's Office, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri Department of Conservation seized 60 high grade marijuana plants growing on a farm in rural Dade County.

The plants are described as being very high grade and would be expected to produce over two thousand dollars of marketable marijuana from each plant at harvest.

The investigation is continuing and more information will be released when possible.

The Stash Sisters Sewciety will be hosting a Quilt Show at The Crossing on Main Street (across from Easson's) during Lockwood's September Days on September 20.

The Quilt Show is open to the public and all quilters.

Check in for the Quilt Show will be from 9-3 on Friday, September 19th at The Crossing.

At check in on Friday, there will be entry form to fill out (no pre-registration required).

Quilts need to be folded and placed in a pillowcase with owner’s name on pillowcase.

The OACAC Dade County Neighborhood Center (DCNC) held the annual “Back To School” Readiness Fair on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. The event was held in the OACAC DCNC community room. 170 students from the Dadeville, Everton, Greenfield and Lockwood school districts grades K-12 received school supplies.

Several organizations were at the fair providing information and/or services for each child. The following organizations had a booth at the event: Dade County Library, Miles for Smiles, MPACT, Dade County Health Department, CMH Dade

Wildcats To Rely On Quickness

GREENFIELD -New head coach Steve Cole and his team won't be the biggest team in the Spring River Valley Conference if measured in the size of the athletes or in number of bodies, but he hopes that quickness and intensity will make up for what they may lack in size and numbers.

"No one should be able to out athlete us," he said, adding, "And they're going to have a lot of fun trying to catch us."

The Wildcats are only 15 strong and most of them are skilled position players.

"We are going to see some teams who are bigger than us up front, but we're going to be in shape and we're going to do some things with tempo and defensively that we think will put us in a good position to win football games," said Cole, who comes in after coaching at Glendale High School in Springfield. He also coached at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar and was a student assistant at the University of Arkansas. He is a graduate of Mansfield High School in Arkansas.

Whitaker who stands 6foot-4 and weighs 180 pounds. He finished sixth in the state last spring in the 400 meter dash. Cole hopes to take advantage of his speed by moving him from the offensive line to wide receiver. He will play defensive end as well.

Bookending the defensive line is another senior, Carl Mason (6-3 200).

He will play tight end on offense.

Senior Austin Irwin (5-9 150) will get a chance to prove himself under center this year after serving as the backup quarterback in the past. Cole has been impressed with the strides he's made early in workouts. He will play cornerback on defense.

Hunter Montez (6-1 170) is another big target at wide receiver and he too will play in the secondary. Dylan Noad, the team's other senior, stands 6-foot-1 170 and also plays receiver and defensive back.

Sophomore Jeritt Esposito (6-2 190) will be asked to prove his versatility as he will see action both on the offensive line and at running back. He plays linebacker as well.

pressed with freshman Charles Servoss (5-10 165) and expects to see him get a lot of carries at running back. He will play linebacker as well.

Another freshman, Dawson Wimer (5-10 205) will play on both sides of the line, as will sophomore Josh Cantrell (6-0 260). Jon Blinkensop (5-9 170) will play offensive line and linebacker.

When asked about the team's work ethic, Cole raved about the off season weightlifting and speed work the kids put in.

"It speaks volumes about leadership. Our seniors made sure everyone was accountable for being there and putting in the work," he said, noting that on average each player gained 100 pounds of added weight lifted from the start of the program until the end in the three core lifts, bench press, squat and power clean.

"We lifted five days a week and it paid off. We got a lot stronger."

The SRVC is always tough but Cole is hopeful.

"The key for us will be stopping the run defensively and spreading teams out and playing up-tempo on offense. We want to win our home games and be in our road games with a chance to win them.

We're excited for the season to get started," he said.

Williams Steps In To Lead Lady Wildcats

GREENFIELD -After three years as an assistant coach, Sara Williams will be leading the Greenfield Lady Wildcat program this fall and she has a versatile and athletic group at her disposal.

The Lady Wildcats will be led by three seniors, all of which return with a great deal of varsity experience. At 5-foot10, senior middle hitter Cassidy Brown will be a force in the center of the net. Robin Fare (5-10) was a setter last year but she is versatile enough to play all over the court.

Karsen Sims (5-6) was the team's libero last year but she too is versatile and may play a variety of positions.

"Our seniors are athletic and they are showing good leadership potential," said Williams.

Joining the group is junior middle hitter Katie Marshall who was a key player on last year's team. At 5-foot-10, she also provides height.

ter. Macy Wilson (5-6) saw some action last year and is expected to see time this fall as the team's setter. Taylor Burns (5-8) played a little varsity last year and she is another athlete whose position isn't nailed down yet, but Williams expects her to make an impact. Three or four other players are vying for the final varsity

spots.

"This group talks really well. I think communication is one of the big keys to being successful in volleyball," said Williams, who noted that this group plans to compete with the stronger programs in the Spring River Valley Conference this fall.

"We're going to have

to work on our serve receiving and improve in that area to be as good as we can, but from what I've seen, the girls are prepared to put in the time and effort to get better there and be as good as they can be," she said.

"This is a really enjoyable group to coach.

We're looking forward to a fun season," she said.

Tigers Working Toward Another Strong Campaign

LOCKWOOD -- It's hard to consistently field a winner in Class 1 high school football, but Lockwood's Clay Lasater has done just that. He says the key is a supportive community.

"They trust us (the coaches) to take their kids and push them and we've had hard working kids and supportive parents and that has allowed us to have consistency in our program. The key is consistency. The kids know what we expect and understand our system," said Lasater.

The Tigers are coming off a 7-4 season in 2013. They lost in the playoffs to Marionville.

Although they graduated only six players off last year's team, those six were key players. This year they return only three seniors and one of them, DJ Bell, is coming off shoulder surgery and his status is unclear.

The other two are a pair of wide receivers who play cornerback on

defense. Thomas Eggerman (6-foot-3 180 pounds) and Noah Sowell (5-11 175) both started last year and will be two of junior quarterback Ben Schnelle's primary targets. Schnelle, a 6-foot-5 190 pound junior, turned in a strong season a year ago and is back under center for the Tigers. He also starts at strong safety.

Junior Cody St. John (6-foot 160) will start at tight end and see some time at defensive end.

His twin brother Casey plays receiver and cornerback. Vance Coble (6-2 240) saw a lot of action last year on the offensive and defensive lines.

Caleb Robertson (510 165) returns to anchor the offensive line at center. He also plays defensive end. Eric Oeltjen (5-10 160) plays guard and linebacker. LOCKWOOD -With seven seniors and five who are returning starters back, the Lockwood Lady Tigers looked primed for success in 2014.

Last season the team finished with a record around .500, but coach Jamie Roschevitz says that the group has lofty goals this fall.

"As sophomores this group who are seniors were part of a team that won the conference and the district and they want to do that again and they're working very hard to get there," she said.

Alexis Byrnes returns as the team's setter.

The 5-foot-5 senior started the last three seasons. "It's really a big thing to have a setter with this kind of experience. She keeps everybody under control," said

"We're looking at filling several spots on the offensive line and so that's been a concern for us, but we have some kids who are stepping up. I've been impressed with how hard they are working. Our skill position players are going to be our strength, but nothing happens without good line play," said Lasater, who had 32 on his roster a week into preseason workouts.

Defensively the linebacking corps is the area that will need some athletes to step up and fill the void. "I'm comfortable with what we have on the defensive line and in the secondary," said Lasater. Back to run the defense is coordinator Mike Pittsenbarger who is in his seventh season.

The Tigers went 5-2 in the Spring River Valley Conference last year. This edition of the team wants to put up another strong season and continue the tradition of good football at Lockwood High School and Lasater says the players are working hard to make that a reality.

"All seven of our seniors are very good leaders and that's a big key if we're to do the things we want to do," she said.

4) will likely serve as the team's libero. Freshman Mariah Coose (6-foot) is also expected to make an impact at the varsity level.

"In addition to being a very quick athletic group that can jump well, these girls are also very smart; excellent student athletes. They work hard and they know the game," she said.

Bearcats Coach Expects Successful Season

Dadeville softball coach, Brent Rountree, shares that Dadeville finished at 13-12 overall last year. The Lady Bearcats finished 2nd in the Humansville tournament, and 4th in the Hermitage tournament 5-2 in the PCL conference.

“We will be inexperienced at all but one position,” states Coach Rountree. “We lost three All-Conference/District Players to graduationApril Wil, Tyler Pringle, and Abby Jarman. “ The teams success will depend on how quick each player learns their position.

Key returning players are: All Conference 1B (Sr) Ashley Brannon will anchor the Lady Bearcats both at first and provide the team with some line drive ability at the plate.

(Sr) 3B Jaycee Herd converted catcher will handle the pitchers and be asked to help drive in runs.

(Sr) OF Kylie Dean returns to centerfield and should be a solid defensive outfielder. Ashton Neely is the lone freshman, and will be expected for her to shoulder most of the pitching.

Coach Rountree was head coach for fall of 2006 and was assistant for seven years.

The Miller Volleyball Cardinals are hoping to build off of last year’s strong showing in districts and make a run for the conference title, Coach Tamra Landers says.
