Pink Apple 5K and 2-Mile Fun Walk/Run scheduled By MELODY METZGER Lamar Democrat
The Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks (BCFO) will hold a Pink Apple 5K and 2-Mile Fun Walk/Run, in conjunction with the Wyatt Earp Fallfest in Lamar, on Saturday, Oct. 11. Registration and t-shirt pick up will begin at 7 a.m., see APPLE, page 4A

refreshing way to start the week. As Skeeter explained the various aspects and history of the circus, she adapted her style of what she taught to coincide with the age group she was speaking to. Just watching Skeeter, one could tell she had been at this for quite some time. When questioned following once of her sessions, she mentioned that she had been on the road as a clown for 30 years. In fact, she is actually a graduate of the Ringling Bros.
Skeeter the Clown visited children at Lamar Tiger Preschool and East Primary on Tuesday, Sept. 2, as a promotion for the upcoming Culpepper & Merriweather Circus that was held Monday, Sept. 8, at the East Primary school grounds. The circus was sponsored by the Lamar Rotary Club and offered two showtimes; one at 5 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m. Watching Skeeter transact with the students was a very see SKEETER, page 4A
Two lawsuits brought before Barton County sheriff Barton County Sheriff Larry “Mitch” Shaw is listed as the party of two lawsuits that were filed recently. Stephen Kendus contends Shaw allowed a jailer to arrest him in 2011 by using excessive force with a taser, causing him to urinate on himself. The suit alleges Barton County Sheriff Department deputies showed a video of the tasering to employees, further humiliating Kendus.
Lamar Youth Choir performs annual concert
The Lamar Youth Choir held its annual concert on Sunday, Aug. 9, at Thiebaud Auditorium. The choir is comprised of children from the Barton County area, representing a broad range of ages. Participants attend practice one evening per week for approximately eight weeks and receive a free choir t-shirt. Under the direction of Brian Hargrave, music director for the Lamar school district, and Anna Strong, music director for the Liberal school district, this free community program exposes children to a wide variety of music. The choir, accompanied on the piano by Tracy Bean, performed “On with the Show”, “Brother Noah Built the Ark”, “The Best in Me”, “Interjections” from Schoolhouse Rock, a foreign language piece “Al Shlosha D’Varim” and “Our America”, which was a medley of patriotic songs.
Joplin Walk for ALS scheduled for September 13 The annual Joplin Walk for ALS will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, at Leonard Park, 4th and Turk. Check in begins at 1 p.m., with the walk starting at 2 p.m. Funds raised through this walk will stay local, providing services to those diagnosed with ALS in the form of support groups, clinics, social events including picnics and candle light memorials and medical equipment. see JOPLIN, page 2A

A second suit was filed by Jennifer Workman, alleging that the sheriff 's department falsified a recording of a sale of meth between deputies and an informant. It also also alleged that a warrant signed by a county judge was forged and that she suffered anguish being handcuffed and slammed to the floor. Workman also alleges emotional distress, as both Kendus and Workman seek jury trials and $25,000 in damages.
