Altus, Oklahoma Telephone Scam In Area

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, would like to warn the public of a recent telephone scam which has been occurring in the Troop B area. Recently, citizens in Ralls and Marion counties have been receiving telephone calls from individuals identifying themselves as Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers who are asking citizens to donate to officers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty. Although there are organizations such as the Missouri State Troopers Association, and “The MASTERS” that are bona fide organizations which may solicit donations, the public should understand Missouri State Highway Patrol employees never solicit funds from the public. As with any telephone solicitation, the Patrol encourages citizens to make sure the caller is reputable and never provide credit card, personal, or security information over the telephone

Upward Bound

The 33rd Annual Old Time Flywheel Reunion was held July 25th through July 27th at Macon County Park. It was sponsored by the Macon County Flywheel & Collectibles Club and held each July. In addition to horse pulls, tractor pulls, demonstrations, baby contests, food, the carnival rides and flea market and many other events, there were various buildings open with many displays available for viewing. President Danny Primm said, “We display a lot of things in our museums that aren’t exactly agriculture related, but they are collectible items. Everything from salt and pepper shakers, refrigerators and stoves and other furniture, clothing, you name it and it’s collected.” Pictured above is a flywheel being demonstrated at the event.

Farm Safety at the Macon County Back to School Health Fair

Attendees of Macon County Back to School Health and Safety Fair will learn about farm safety on August 3rd. Nora Dodd, ADM outreach coordinator, will teach the students about chemical safety from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. According to the National Safety Council, agriculture is the nation’s most dangerous industry. Between 1995 and 2000, nearly 700 youth died on farms and ranches in the United States, according to the 2004 Journal of Safety Research. “The farm is a great place to live,” said

As a result of being in Upward Bound, project participants receive college-prep support services throughout their high school years, including 1) free participation at two summer sessions on the Truman campus, 2) opportunity to apply for a third summer session in which they receive up to six free hours of Truman credit, and 3) weekly after-school meetings emphasizing strong study habits and college/career services. During this summer’s residential session, the students were enrolled in a core curriculum of math, science, foreign language, composition and literature; were involved in college and career experiences—including college visits and paid internship opportunities; and participated in social, residential and cultural activities. Approximately fifty high school students from eleven area schools participated in this summer’s Upward Bound session.

Dodd. “People just need to be mindful of the dangers. Nearly every job on the farm can be dangerous.” Youth attending will discuss the dangers of harmful chemical exposure and the importance of accuracy and protection while working with chemicals. Dodd partners with Farm Safety For Just Kids to offer safety education for youth. Farm Safety For Just Kids was founded 25 years ago by an Iowa farm wife after the death of her son in a gravity flow grain wagon accident. The organiza-

tion promotes a safe farm environment to prevent injuries and death by educating our youth. ADM, a leading agricultural processor of food ingredients, animal feeds, and feed ingredients, is proud to support Farm Safety For Just Kids. Everything ADM does begins with the work of the American farmer, so ADM is committed to helping producers and their families live and work safely on American farms. ADM sponsors outreach coordinators in Illinois and Missouri as well.
