Curves Of Macon To Close Curves of Macon, MO will close July 26th. Just 3 months short of their 10-year anniversary—citing a declining membership and rising costs. “This was probably one of the toughest decision I’ve ever seen my boss make. It was a very heartbreaking decision for Doris. Not only did our membership decline so did Doris’ health.” States Shallon Collier, Manager of Curves. “I know what she puts into it monthly not just financially but physically and knew that she wouldn’t be able to carry either burden much longer.” Doris Claypoole, owner/operator of Curves for the last 7 years, has struggled for the last three to keep the doors open. When she suffered a heart attack in May of last year things really changed. Doctors advised her that she probably shouldn’t continue doing what she was doing. Doris was determined to keep the facility going because of all the women who have been attending since the doors opened, but other health issues have continued to get in the way of that along with the financial burden. Shallon said they were actually contracted to stay open another year and half, “But we’ve lost members and we just haven’t been able to get new ones back in. Doris just can’t afford to spend money on mailings and advertising and keep losing.” Curves of Macon is currently down to only 47 members, where as in the past they had anywhere from 80 to 100. Shallon said it also didn’t help that Curves wouldn’t waive several new requirements that just drove up the costs of running the facility, despite Doris’ difficulties. “When our members found out we would be closing they were devastated.” Shallon said. “They just looked at me and said ‘What are we going to do now? This is all we know.’” “What are they going to do now? It’s been hard, but I’ve referred them to the YMCA here in town. People say they are the reason our membership as declined, and that may be true, but I look at it as a place for them to continue a healthy lifestyle. I never saw us as competing with the Y, I’ve always seen it as a group effort in keeping our community healthy and I want to continue to see that happen. I’ve even considered joining myself. We’ve got
to keep in touch some how. I just have to convince them that it is something they will be able to do. We are really going to miss these ladies.” said Shallon. “Strengthening Women is the Curves motto, but it’s so much more than that.” Shallon says. “It’s a family environment. Curves has been a place to run into old friends and make new ones. Lots of town news, stories, recipes, and health tips have been swapped while working out
on the machines. We’ve laughed together, we’ve cried together, and we’ve even laughed until we cried. I’ve learned from them probably more than they have ever learned from me. They are like a second family to us here.”
