July 4th Celebrations Party in the Park, the first 4th of July celebration at Long Branch State Park included a Little Mr. and Miss Long Branch pageant. The 2nd runners-up were Stefan Bilinkski and Bailey Stoebe. First runners-up were Trace Phelps and Sianna Jones. The winners, as pictured, were Kellye Garvin and Chris Roses.

Two Arrested At Santa Fe Lake On Drug Charges On Monday, July 1, C&R in Macon presented their first fireworks display with the fireworks donated by Compton’s Fireworks. The turnout was a success with the parking lot completely filled, as well as neighboring parking lots. C&R alsovww provided free hot dogs and beverages to those attending. Thank you C&R and Compton’s! And below, these little ones took advantage of the great weekend weather by taking a dip in the Santa Fe Lake on Saturday the 6th.

On July 5, 2013 at approximately 12:40 a.m. an officer with the La Plata Police Department came upon multiple subjects trespassing at the Santa Fe Lake. During the course of the contact a subject who was identified as Everett E. Rude Jr., of Kirksville, Missouri attempted to destroy narcotic evidence and then resisted arrest by fleeing. A second subject who was identified as Angel D. Simonton of Kirksville, Missouri was located in a nearby vehicle with items commonly used in the production of methamphetamine. During a search of the immediate area more items were located that are commonly used in the production

of methamphetamine. Simonton was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Jail where she was placed on a 24 hour hold pending the outcome of a warrant application. A warrant application will also be filed with the Macon County Prosecutors Office in reference to Rude who is already wanted on similar drug charges. Two other subjects were also located at the Santa Fe Lake and released pending further investigation. The La Plata Police Department is being assisted by the Macon County Sheriff ’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

LA PLATA TEACHER RECEIVES AWARD La Plata Elementary School teacher Danielle Ebeling was selected as a recipient of this year’s Dr. Kay Clapp Children’s Literacy Award at Truman State University. The fund provides assistance to a Master of Arts in Education student and a current teacher to purchase children’s literature for their professional practices. Ebeling will receive $500 to purchase materials for her classroom. Rebecca Spegal, a graduate student at Truman, was the other recipient of the Dr. Kay Clapp Children’s Literacy Award. The awards were presented June 7 during a ceremony on campus. The Dr. Kay Clapp Children’s Literacy Award was endowed in 2006 to honor Clapp, a professor emeritus in the Department of Education at Truman. Clapp is a powerful proponent of literacy and children’s literature. Hundreds of students and practicing teachers have been influenced by her dedication and careful mentoring.
