Memorial Day in Callao On Monday morning, May 26, 2014 at 10 am The Callao American Legion presented their annual Memorial Day Program to a very good crowd.

This was the 31st year Post 360 had held these services.

Nate Walker was the first speaker.

In 1983, after many years absence, Louis Ash, Pres. of the Callao Community Betterment asked if he could co-sponsor a service.

Barry Ford was Post Commander and Jayne Roberts was Auxiliary President so they all worked together and got one started. Approximately 80 were present that day.

Again this year we were privileged to have Nate Walker return as our speaker.

The title of his message was “In the Arena,” quoting from several past presidents. Before he spoke he paid special tribute and honors to “Those Who Gave All.” Recognizing the significance of Memorial Day. We are very grateful for 3rd Dis. Representative Walker for coming.

Refreshments and visiting took place after the ceremony and the weather was beautiful for this “Special Day.” Legion News: The next Legion meeting will be June 12 with a carry-in meal at 6:30.

All members are urged to attend, especially the new 20+ Sons of American Legion members in order to get acquainted and learn about activities of the Legion, a very active post in Callao.

Northeast Coalition for Roadway Safety Offering Free Child Seat Technician Class Northeast Missouri is in need of certified child passenger safety technicians - individuals and organizations who are certified to properly install car seats. There are very few of these valued resources in our region, which is why the Northeast Coalition for Roadway Safety is offering a CPS Tech Training Class in July free to those interested in helping us continue to reduce fatalities on Missouri roads.

Missouri law requires all children under eight to be in a child safety or booster seat until they are 80 lbs. or 4’9” tall. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety

“The more resources and technicians we have available to assist families with car seat installment, the safer children are in a vehicle,” said Kathy Zents, a certified passenger safety seat technician trainer.

Free Child Seat 2014 Troop B Technician Class Memorial Day Traffic Crash Totals Continued from page 1A

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces the 2014 Memorial Day weekend traffic crash and enforcement totals for the Troop B area, which consists of the 16 northeast counties of Missouri. During the holiday weekend troopers participated in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), and as an added enforcement effort also conducted a 20-Mile Trooper operation on U.S. Highways 24, 36, and 63 on Friday, May 23, and Monday, May 26, 2014.

During the 2014 Memorial Day weekend traffic crash counting period, which began at 6 p.m., Friday, May 23, and ended at 11:59 p.m., Monday, May 26, 2014, Troop B officers investigated 17 traffic crashes resulting in 15 injuries, and no fatalities.

Officers also investigated one boating crash that resulted in one injury. Pre-

liminary enforcement totals show officers issued 337 summonses for exceeding the posted speed limit, 110 summonses for seat belt violations, issued 847 warnings, made 11 arrests for driving while intoxicated and one arrest for boating while intoxicated, and assisted 249 motorists.

“Even though this major holiday period has ended, we want to urge motorists to continue to drive safely and always wear their seat belts,” stated Captain Wilt.

In support of “The Drive To ZERO Highway Deaths,” the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Surprise, surprise… happy people live their lives differently. They don’t have different lives. They just do a better job at living them than those who are unhappy.

Happiness is the result of subjective interpretation of perception. Of course, what we perceive isn’t always done so by choice — life does throw things our way.

However, most of the time, we find ourselves in the situations we are in because of actions we took and decisions we made. It’s the way that you live your life that largely decides whether or not you will live happily.

They don’t bother trying to make others like them — mainly because they don’t care if they’re liked.

They like themselves and they are the only people they ever answer to. You could like them. You could hate them. You could pay them no mind whatsoever — doesn’t make a difference to them.

They do what they do because they decided to do it. They aren’t trying to gain your approval or acceptance. They don’t want to be part of your team — they’re a team of their

own. They live their lives the way they see fit and if you like them for it, great.

If not… then so be it.

They do things because they want to do them, not because they believe they have to do them.

They don’t believe they have to do anything. Other than pay taxes and die of course — everything else is a decision followed by deliberate action. If they are doing something, going somewhere, participating in something, it’s because that is exactly what it is that they want to be doing.

No one coerced them or tricked them into doing it because they value their opinion above everyone else’s. They do what they believe is right and don’t bother to ask for permission — they just do it.

They love their friends but don’t rely on them.

Friends are tricky because they aren’t really yours, are they? You don’t own them.

They are their own people who have their own wants and needs — people who will always put themselves ahead of you and your goals. Friends are great to have, but relying on them too heavily will leave you disappointed.

Expand Missourians’ Gun Rights Kevin Elmer to Strengthen and Expand Missourians’ Gun Rights The Missouri House gave approval today to legislation that would lower the age requirement for a concealed carry permit and make several other changes to strengthen the gun rights of Missouri citizens.

Handled in the House by state Representative Kevin Elmer, SB 656 was approved by a vote of 112-40.

SB 656 would lower the current age requirement to obtain a concealed carry permit from 21 to 19. The bill also would simplify the process to obtain a permit by eliminating the need for applicants to physically demonstrate proper use of both a semiautomatic pistol and a revolver.

Instead, the legislation would allow an applicant to demonstrate his or her ability to successfully load and unload only one firearm, either a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol. In addition, the bill would allow Missourians with a concealed carry permit to open carry. Specifically, the bill states that local

governments would not be allowed to prohibit the open carrying of a firearm by an individual with a valid concealed carry endorsement.

“These are some important changes to our gun laws here in Missouri that will strengthen and expand the rights of law-abiding, responsible Missourians,” said Elmer, R-Nixa. “These are common sense changes that will make the process to obtain a permit less burdensome and more efficient, and that will open the door for more responsible young adults to obtain their permits. I know these are changes supported by most Missourians and it has been an honor to be able to work with my colleagues to move this bill forward.”

Another provision in the bill would allow Missouri school districts to designate teachers or administrators as school protection officers that would be responsible for promoting safety in the school environment. A school protection officer would be required to have a concealed carry permit and to com-

plete a school protection office training program established by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.

In addition, the bill would specify that a person commits the crime of unlawful use of weapons if he or she knowingly possesses a firearm while also knowingly in possession of a controlled substance that is sufficient for a felony violation. The bill also would allow court-appointed special prosecutors to carry in a courthouse setting; prohibit public housing authorities from banning firearms by residents who are law-abiding citizens; and prevent doctors from being forced to document or maintain information about a patient’s gun ownership.

Because the House made changes to the bill, it now returns to the Senate chamber for discussion. If the Senate refuses to adopt the House changes, the bill will be sent to conference where members from both sides will meet to iron out any differences.

The La Plata Bulldogs kicked off the traditional start of the summer season on Memorial Day at home in the La Plata sports complex. The Bulldogs were set to host the Sturgeon Bulldogs in the Class 1 State Baseball Tournament. The Bulldogs advanced by winning the district title over the then number one team in the state Atlanta Hornets. The Bulldogs took the field with the vocal support of the home crowd behind them.

The Bulldogs batted first even though they were the host school due to Sturgeon being selected as the higher seed.

Matt Safley got things started with a line drive single to center field. Jace Brown advanced Matt on a ground out to short and was followed by a line drive base hit to right by Tanner Riggins. The Bulldogs had runners at the corners when Baylon Belt dug in at the batters box. Baylon ripped the ball to center field for a double scoring two. Just like that the Dogs held a early two run lead.

Riggins took the mound for the Bulldogs and shutdown Sturgeon 1-2-3 with a pair of ground outs sandwiching a strikeout. The Bulldogs were unable to get anything going in the second inning and Riggins held Sturgeon in the bottom of the inning to a single. In the top of the third the Bulldogs took control of the game. Safley walked to lead off the inning. Brown then ripped the ball that ate up the second baseman for a single. Riggins helped his own cause with a single to center that scored Safley.

Belt followed with a infield singe to load the bases. Derick Groseclose came in as a courtesy runner for Riggins. Alex Smith picked the Dogs up with a clean single to right scoring one and keeping the bases packed.

Ty Davison took the baton and singled to right chasing home two more runs. Preston Payne loaded the bases yet again with a infield single. With a full count Hunter Howe doubled to center scoring two more and increasing the lead to 8-0. Safley did not let up, he dropped a single into right and increased the lead to double digits as the crowd roared. Riggins would follow with another single but the Dogs were held after taking a 10-0 lead.

Sturgeon was able to answer with a single unearned run in the bottom of the inning on two LaPlata errors.

Things looked good again for the Bulldogs when Slaughter walked to lead off the 4th but despite a single from Payne they were not able to add to the lead. Sturgeon loaded the bases in their half of the 4th with one out on two singles and an error. Riggins

slammed the door striking out the next two batters.

In the bottom of the 5th Sturgeon threatened with three straight hits to lead off the inning and scored two to make the Dogs lead 10-3 but again Riggins shut the door with a pop out and two more strikeouts.

In the sixth the Bulldogs tried to answer with a pair of hits by Slaughter and Smith but the inning ended dramatically with Slaughter getting called out at home. Riggins continued to hold Sturgeon down going into the final inning. The Bulldogs looked for a little insurance and got it with two runs putting the final nails in the coffin. Payne singled to lead off and stole second, with two outs Brown singled to left sending him home. Riggins followed with a single scoring Brown and La Plata led 12-3. Safley took the hill in the final inning and closed out Sturgeon for the victory and advancing the Bulldogs on to the next round.

As fate would have it, the Bulldogs hosted the quarterfinals at home on Wednesday against New Franklin.

Again it would be a battle of Bulldogs to see who would make it to O’Fallon for the final four.

Matt Safley took the mound for the Bulldogs and you could feel the tension in the air as the game got under way. Matt stuck out the first hitter to prelude the rest of the game. Tyler Hull opposed the Bulldogs and has already committed to pitching next year at UMKC. He showed why they wanted him as he shutdown the Bulldogs over the first two innings with seven strikeouts.

Safley was matching him pitch for pitch striking out five over three innings and not allowing a base runner. In the bottom of the 3rd La Plata broke through, Howe walked to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a sac bunt by Safley. Riggins came to the plate with two outs and lopped a ball to right that popped out of the glove of the right fielder for an error which scored Howe.

New Franklin would answer back with a run scoring single in the top of the 4th to tie the game at 1-1. Now was the time to settle in and get comfortable if you could. Davison singled for La Plata in the bottom of the inning but was held right there. Safley gave up a lead off walk but shut the door on New Franklin in the 5th.

Neither team was able to mount a threat through the 6th inning. Riggins had taken the mound in the 6th and started the 7th giving up back to back base runners. But as before against Sturgeon, he struck out the final two batters to keep the game tied.

The two teams were stuck in a battle of wills over the next few innings as each tried to get the other to blink.

As things carried in to extra innings you could feel the players and the crowd exhale with every swing of the bat. In the 10th New Franklin’s Tanner White tripled with two outs but was kept standing on the bag as Safley who had reentered the game stuck out the next batter.

In the bottom of the 11th New Franklin again attempted to dent the scoreboard. With two outs they loaded the bases but were held right there on a ground out. In the 12th the game turned on the Bulldogs. New Franklin busted the bubble with a run and then kept letting the air out of the

balloon sending thirteen runs across the plate and taking the air out of La Plata’s sails.

The Bulldogs went down in the bottom of the inning and the improbable season ended for the Dogs. The home crowd stood and gave tribute to their warriors for a amazing season.

All year long the Bulldogs improved with each step a sign of a good team and a good coach. “That was the best 11 innings I have been a part of and the worst inning I have been a part of.” Coach Woodward would say.

Abandoned Wildlife Have you ever seen a young wild animal by itself that appears abandoned?

This time of year the Missouri Department of Conservation receives several calls about abandoned baby animals. Though you may be tempted to help these animals, the possession and disturbance of wildlife is illegal. Here are some tips you should know in case you encounter young critters.

1. Leave wild animals alone and do not handle or try to raise the young.

When we touch young wildlife our scent is left on them which can result in the mother rejecting or

killing the animal. The young animal could become stressed which may lead to death.

2. You may not be able to see the adult/parent, however, they are not far away. Wild animals begin learning survival skills and some can survive on their own within a few weeks from birth.

3. Do not feed the young animals. Many times feeding the animals will result in them being a nuisance later.

On 05/22/14 at approximately 4:30pm, an officer of the Macon Police Department was asked to assist the Macon County Juvenile Office and the Department of Social Services - Children’s Division in an investigation in the 800 block of Ranchland Drive.

During the contact, police observed a male subject in possession of synthetic cannabinoid. The suspect, a 19-year old black male of Macon, was placed under arrest for possession of synthetic cannabinoid and possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department for processing and was later released on summons pending a Division II court date.

On 05/23/14 at approximately 2:00pm, an officer of the Macon Police Department made enforcement contact with a vehicle on Reed Street in Macon. As a result of the contact, police arrested the driver, a 25-year old black female of Macon, for driving while suspended, fail

to stop at a stop sign and failure to provide proof of insurance. The female suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department for processing and was later released on summons pending a municipal court date.

On 05/23/14 at approximately 2:40pm, the Macon Police Department responded to a 911 call of an erratic driver on Highway 63 (Missouri St) which pulled off of the roadway at a business in the 800 block of South Missouri Street. Police made enforcement contact with the vehicle which contained two occupants.

During the contact, police conducted a consent search of the vehicle, locating a large amount of marijuana and controlled substance. Police then requested assistance from the MPD K-9 unit for a more in depth search which resulted in locating prescription medications and additional marijuana.

substance and possession of marijuana. The driver of the vehicle was also arrested for driving while revoked. Both suspects were transported to the Macon Police Department for processing and the vehicle was impounded. The suspects were processed and transported to the Macon County Jail where they were placed on 24hour hold pending formal charges. The Macon Police Department was assisted by the Macon County Sheriff ’s Office and North Missouri Drug Task Force during the investigation. Formal charges were later filed against Joshua N. England, 29-year old white male of Macon, for driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana (over 35 grams) and possession of controlled substance with bond being set at $9,000.00 cash only.

On 05/24/14 at approximately 6:30am, the Macon Police Department received a report of peace disturbance in the 800 block of Riggs Street. It was reported a female subject was banging on a window of a residence and yelling loudly. Police responded to the call and located a white female causing a disturbance. As a result, police arrested a 38-year old white female of Macon for peace disturbance. The female suspect was transported to the

Macon Police Department for processing and was later released on summons pending a municipal court date.

On 05/25/14 at approximately 1:10am, an officer of the Macon Police Department made enforcement contact with a vehicle in the area of Wentz and Union Streets. As a result of the contact, police arrested a 24-year old white male of Macon for driving while intoxicated.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Macon Police Department for processing.

He was later released on summons pending a municipal court date.

On 05/26/14 at approximately 11:00am, an officer of the Macon Police Department made enforcement contact with a vehicle in the area of Primrose Ln and Eastern Dr. As a result, police arrested a 32-year old white male of Moberly for driving while license revoked. The suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department for processing and was later released after posting the required bond.

A criminal charge is merely an allegation and the defendant is, of course, presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Well everyone it is definitely summer and I love it. I was off today and Kenny and I spent the whole day outside working in the flowerbeds.

Thank you to Raymond and Jessica for coming up to help us with the heavy work. The only thing I don’t like about this time of year is the cottonwood tree the neighbor has. I hate all the fluffy white seeds floating around in the air. They land on your face and are awful. My patio furniture and the grill and everything in my yard is covered with this awful stuff.

Sunday the 25th Kenny and I went to a fun party. It was granddaughter Kaylee’s high school graduation party. The party was held 2 weeks after graduation as so many of Kaylee’s friends have been having parties and Kaylee wanted to go to them. The party was held at Kaylee’s aunt and uncle, Bonnie and John McMurry, in Atlanta. There was a big tent set up in the yard and lots of tables and chairs for the guest to enjoy the wonderful food. when a white truck came roaring up our street, making a very loud noise. The noise scared Cody and he ran into the street. The truck ran the stop sign and my dog froze in the middle of the street. I ran right behind him waving my arms and yelling at the truck driver. I stood in the middle of the street by my dog and waved my arms like a crazy woman.

The truck stopped about 3 feet from me, I reached down and picked up my dog and started walking toward my house. The kid driving looked at me and said, “SORRY”.

I didn’t say anything then as I was so busy saying, “Thank you GOD for saving us both.” Now I want to say to everyone, if you are driving in town, slow down, stop at stop signs, and watch for children, pets, and crazy old women trying to save their pets.

MDC Offers Tips for Avoiding Tick-borne Illnesses

Summertime is hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking time. It also is tick time, and the Missouri Department of Conservation reminds those visiting conservation areas to take time to prevent tick bites.

Ticks can transmit diseases, including ehrlichiosis, tularemia, anaplasmosis, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI).

The risk of contracting these illnesses is small but serious, so it is worth taking a few simple precautions to avoid them.

Protective clothing is the first line of defense against ticks. When outdoors, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and boots with pants tucked into socks or boots. Rubber bands, blousing bands, or tape can be used to secure the cuffs of your pants.

Once indoors, conduct a

thorough tick check and shower as soon as possible to remove any unattached ticks. Tumble clothes in a dryer on high heat to kill remaining ticks before washing your clothing.

Insect repellents also reduce the risk of being bitten. Products containing DEET are most effective.

Apply DEET-based repellent on exposed skin and clothing. Use a product with at least a 20-percent concentration. Lower concentrations do not repel lone-star ticks, Missouri’s most common ticks. Essential oils and natural products are not registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for tick repellency. Be sure to follow label instructions to ensure safety and best results.

Products containing permethrin can be applied to clothing and equipment but not directly to skin.

Garments must be allowed to dry thoroughly before wearing. These products kill ticks rather than merely repelling them. Again, be sure to follow label directions.

Most tick-transmitted diseases are not transferred to the host until the tick has been feeding for some time. The earlier the tick is located and removed, the less the chance of being infected with a tick-borne disease. When you are active outdoors, never allow more than a few hours to pass without a tick inspection.

Remove any attached ticks immediately. Proper removal is important, because improper removal can increase the likelihood of infection. Follow these steps to remove a tick that is already attached.

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible. If you use your fingers, cover them with tissue or rubber gloves. Use only as much pressure as necessary to avoid forcing the tick’s stomach contents

into the bite.

Remove the tick with a firm outward movement.

Never jerk or twist the tick when removing it.

After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.

Watch for symptoms of tick-borne disease in the days and weeks following a tick bite. These include any unusual rash and unexplained flu-like symptoms, including fever, severe headaches, body aches, and dizziness.

Symptoms of tick-borne diseases often are mild, but they should not be ignored. If you know you’ve been bitten by a tick and any of the above symptoms appear, consult a doctor and mention the recent tick bite. Prompt treatment with antibiotics can prevent serious illness or even death.

More than 30,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported each year, making it the most commonly reported vector-borne illness in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Make sure your family isn’t part of that number.

As the warmer months coax us outside, reducing the risk of tick bites is essential to protecting your family from Lyme disease and its potential longterm, devastating effects.

Lyme disease can cause facial or Bell’s palsy, severe headaches, neck stiffness, heart palpitations, and pain and swelling in large joints. However, it’s difficult to diagnose, as symptoms can be attributed to other health problems.

Left untreated, approxi-

mately 60 percent of Lyme disease sufferers experience arthritis, while five percent develop chronic neurological challenges months or years after the infection.

“Had I understood the potential severity of Lyme disease and taken the threat seriously, I might have saved my children from years of suffering,” says Jennifer Reid, a mother of two children affected

Protection From Tick Bites and Lyme Disease

For Pets • Check pets for ticks daily and remove them as soon as possible.

• Talk with your veterinarian about using tick preventatives on your pet.

• Watch pets closely for changes in behavior or appetite. This may indicate Lyme disease infection.

In Your Yard • Place a wood chip or gravel barrier between your lawn, patio, and play equipment and any wooded areas. This will restrict tick migration into recreational areas.

• Mow the lawn frequently and keep leaves raked.

• Keep playground equipment and patios away from yard edges and trees and place them in sunny locations, if possible.

• Pest control products can help protect your family from tick bites, according to RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment), a national trade association. On a seasonal basis, consult a professional to spray the perimeter.

On Tuesday, May 13th, Bevier C-4 third-fifth graders teamed up with the local Missouri Department of Conservation agents for an educational adventure. The students arrived at Shoemaker RV park for a time of fishing and a lesson on Missouri owls. The students were provided with individual fishing poles, fishing bait, and encouraging advice from the agents. Tuesday morning, Stephanie and the residents played the Nintendo Wii Wheel of Fortune game.

Everyone had fun spinning the big wheel and solving all the puzzles.

The Clarence First Christian Church hosted our monthly Birthday Party this afternoon. Myrna Carothers sang and Sharon Jones played the piano while cake and ice cream were served to everyone attending. Thank you to everyone that helped make our birthday party so much fun!

Harold and Molly made the rounds during their weekly visit on Wednesday. They always bring out the smiles whenever they’re in the building!

The Friendship Design class met Thursday morning. Janice Wilson and Stephanie assisted the residents in making a pretty springtime craft. Diane Chinn and Stephanie took several residents on a bus ride this afternoon. Their outdoor adventure took them all around Clarence and also the Shelbina Lake. Janet McCoy, along with Colleen Reid, Virgie Engle, and Dorothy Dee Daniel planted flowers this afternoon in the window boxes. The boxes look so nice!

Church, led Bible study Friday morning. The study title was “Hope Renewed”. Scripture was read from John 18:15-18, 25-27; 21:15-19. Clark reminded us that when we fail, Jesus will restore us.

Stephanie and the residents played Snack Bingo this afternoon. The grand prize winners were Larry Vaughn, Isabel Hutcherson, and Dorothy Dee Daniel.

Saturday morning, Ronnie Shores came out and visited with the residents and shared his collection of cd’s, then in the afternoon, the residents watched “Monster-inLaw” during Movie Time with Darrell.

Take them to the library and help them find some books. There are many great children’s books available, some of which are Newbery and Caldecott Medal winners.

In 1921, Frederic G. Melcher came up with the idea of presenting an award for the most distinguished children’s book. Backed by children’s librarians, the American Library Association’s Executive Board approved the proposal for the award in 1922 and the Newbery Medal was born.

The award was named after 18th-century English bookseller John Newbery and was first given for The Story of Mankind by Hendrik Willem van Loon in 1922.

Concerned that the artists creating children’s picture books weren’t getting the awarded to the most distinguished picture book of the year. The medal was named after 19thcentury English illustrator Randolph J. Caldecott and was first given for Animals of the Bible, A Picture Book, illustrated by Doro-

thy P. Lathrop with text selected by Helen Dean Fish in 1938. There have been many other Newbery and Caldecott Medal winners.

Some of these include the following: Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan won the Newbery Medal in 1986. The book deals with loss, love and abandonment, as Sarah from Maine answers an ad placed by a widowed midwestern farmer with two children.

The children become attached to Sarah and fear she is leaving them when she goes to town. Sarah is not and returns home with colored pencils to show the children how beautiful Maine is.Out of the Dust

The book tells the story of an Oklahoma girl in stanza form, as she battles the heat, dust and wind during the Great Depression.

This is just a tiny representation of the outstanding books that have received the awards each year. In addition to the main awards, there are runners-up or “honor books,” as they are referred to now.

Memorial Day, End of Session Report…

The Second Session of the 97th General Assembly adjourned at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16th; however, before we reflect upon that, I would like to first pay special tribute and honor to “Those Who Gave All” recognizing the significance of Memorial Day. This Memorial Day, as we pay our respects to our nation’s fallen heroes, I think it is extremely important that we have a healthy dose of perspective. It is too often easy for all of us as Americans to take our many freedoms for granted; to not fully appreciate the immense privilege it is to live in the greatest nation on this planet. When we do that, we diminish the importance of the sacrifices that have been made to give us this blessing of liberty, and this honor of being Americans.

We must continue to remember that we live in a nation that is a shining beacon of hope for the rest of the world. This is a nation built on freedom and equality and a profound respect for the sanctity of all human life. And on a day like Memorial Day, when we pause to honor those who gave their lives so that we might have these many blessings, it is crucial that we realize this great nation was not inherited; it was earned.

We must continue to work each and every day to honor those who have sacrificed to make the American dream a reality. They paid the dearest price because they knew there was no way of life more perfect than ours, nor any nation that better embraced and valued the freedoms necessary to give every man, woman and child the opportunity to pursue their dreams. So on Memorial Day we say thank you and we pledge to do all we can to make certain their sacrifices will have not been in vain. We owe our fallen soldiers a debt of gratitude we can never repay, but that should never stop us from trying to pay back this debt each and every day we continue to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Earlier this past week in Unionville, on Monday, I had the great honor to present Rodney M. Randall with a medal, medallion, certificate and a Missouri Flag in recognition of his service during World War II. The certificate, signed

I hope that your Memorial Day is a great one and that you pause to reflect with your family and friends about the heroic sacrifices made by our nation’s service men and women. Perhaps you will be able to attend one of many Memorial Day Services held throughout the 3rd District and North Missouri.

This Memorial Day, I have the honor and responsibility to the speaker at the Callao American Legion Post Memorial Service at 10:00 am at the Callao City Park in Callao, Missouri.

During the weekend and on Memorial Day there will be several special Memorial Day Services throughout Adair, Sullivan, Putnam and Mercer counties, I hope that you will take the time to attend one of them; as well as visit the graves of loved ones, especially those who served our Country so valiantly and for those brave souls “Who Gave There All”. May God bless you; may God bless our nation’s heroes; and may God bless the United States of America.

As earlier noted, the legislature adjourned sine die

the Second Session of the 97th General Assembly at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16th. Much has already been reported concerning the successes and failures of the past Session. However, I do think that it is important to point out a few highlights and reflect on the actions of the General Assemblies work and achievements.

In the first five and a half months of 2014 the Missouri General Assembly can claim successes in addressing the first income tax reform/cut in decades; the school transfers crisis; reforming the state’s criminal code, providing an omnibus agriculture bill and moved forward legislation that would triple the state’s current 24-hour waiting period for abortion.

The legislature also passed a handful of health care bills, including one that would allow use cannabidiol oil for epilepsy treatment, one that would place orally administered chemotherapy treatments on the same level with traditional treatments, and another that would expand dental coverage under Medicaid.

The legislature did not act on several labor bills or bring forward legislation with Medicaid transformation, reform and expansion.

The General Assembly did work hard and passed a responsible State Budget that assured that my commitment for education, the developmentally disabled and for mental health funding remained a top priority.

Some of the highlights in the new budget include record spending amounts for education, mental health and developmental disabilities. · The budget passed by the House and Senate is a fiscally responsible spending plan balanced on revenue estimate numbers agreed to by the House and Senate in December of 2013. · While we believe that revenue estimates will fall well short of what the governor predicted, it makes sense to allocate any potential additional revenue to education and one-time capital projects. ·Between General Revenue and the Surplus Revenue Fund the House budget proposal spends the exact same dollar amount that the Governor used in the Foundation Formula, $278m. · This budget would also fully fund A+ Scholarships and a 15% increase in Access Missouri Scholarships. · This budget would fully fund the Bright Flight Scholarship Program and pending legislation

(HB1308) could allow these Bright Flight dollars to be used for a loan forgiveness program that would keep our best and brightest students here in Missouri. · A $15 million dollar increase to Access Missouri Scholarship Program will help provide access to higher education to thousands more Missourians. · The General Assembly was able to pass funding to rebuild the Fulton State Mental Hospital which is the oldest public mental health facility west of the Mississippi River built in 1847.

Read MOre, Missouri! Reading Challenge Missouri students can keep their reading skills sharp over the summer months by joining the “Read MOre, Missouri!” reading challenge.

“Kids who read during the summer are much less likely to lose the skills they gained during the school year,” says Commissioner of Education Chris Nicastro. “Read MOre, Missouri!” can instill the joy of reading in our children and help reach the goals of Missouri’s Top 10 by 20 initiative.”

The reading challenge is an effort to prevent “summer slide,” the loss of learning skills that many students experience during their break from classes. Experts say that reading just six books during the summer can keep

students from regressing and having to catch up once school begins again in the fall. Parents are encouraged to read aloud to their children and to have their kids read something every day.

There are many ways to select the texts to share with children—school and public librarians are a great resource and there are numerous book lists.

The goal is to engage children with books—lots of different kinds of books (or magazines, short articles, even websites). The best way to build reading skills is to read!

The Department is distributing materials to Missouri school districts and encouraging every district to take part.

There’s Nothing To Do! While your kids may look forward to summer, you probably dread it due to the boredom that typically sets in after a few weeks.

You must come up with ways to entertain your kids without breaking the bank. Here are some suggestions.

Make and play badminton. To make the racquets, bend wire hangers into an ovular shape and twist the ends together. Stretch some nylon across the top and wrap tightly around the handle. Secure the nylon to the handle with string. Use a soft ball for the birdie. Stretch some long string between the trees to make the net.

Find out how handy you are. Dismantle old machines, like telephones and radios, to see how they work. Then try putting them back together.

Tour your state capitol.

Before you go, have your kids research the history of the state government, how it is run and relates to the federal government, and how a bill becomes a law.

Make some ice cream.

You will need a gallonsized plastic bag, a quartsized plastic bag, milk, sugar, vanilla, salt and ice.

Place 1 c. milk, 1 T. sugar and 1/2 t. vanilla in the quart-sized bag. Place 1/3 c. salt in the gallon-sized bag and fill 3/4 of the way

with ice cubes. Place the smaller bag inside the larger bag and seal tightly.

Shake vigorously for five minutes.

Put on a play. Have your children write the screenplay, design the sets and costumes, and make the tickets and advertising.

Check with local appliance stores for large boxes to use for the sets and dye some old sheets for the curtains. Make costumes from old clothes.

Tour a local factory. Before you go, have the kids research the history of the business, what it makes, how it markets its products and what it means to the community.

Plant a garden. Find a suitable site and help your kids figure out what will grow best there. Once everything is planted, have your kids take turns caring for the garden, watering and weeding it. Help your kids harvest the vegetables and cook a meal using them.

Go on a scavenger hunt.

Hide a list of items for each kid and give them a certain time to find them.

Have an egg and spoon race. You will need a raw egg and spoon for each kid. Line them up at the starting line and instruct them to try to race to the finish without dropping the egg from the spoon

and breaking it. Should they drop the egg and it remains intact, they must return to the starting line and start over. The first kid to reach the finish line without breaking the egg wins.

There are many other ways you can keep the kids entertained for the rest of the summer. You can: • Pick up some books from the library and read them together • Learn a foreign language or sign language • Start a collection or hobby • Organize a neighborhood block party • Visit a zoo, museum, nature center or some other place of interest • Volunteer at a shelter, hospital or senior home • Go biking, hiking or backyard camping • Walk around the city and observe the architecture • Visit a farmer’s market and cook whatever you buy • Redecorate a room • Hold a garage sale • Play games indoors and outdoors • Make crafts With some thought and creativity, you can keep the kids entertained this summer and away from the TV, computer and video games. by Dr. Phil Bray, Lead Pastor, Macon First Baptist Church Definition Of Love Love is a word misused in today’s society. It is used as flippantly as one’s fondness for cheeseburgers to something as erotic as the act of sexual intercourse.

With such a wide range of possible meanings one is easily left to wander through the fog of confusion aimlessly. What is love? Is there a solid definition that is authoritative for all people of all time?

The Bible says in 1 John 4:10, “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” Love is displayed through the sacrificial act of God in sending His Son to endure the agonies of His wrath in the place of guilty sinners so that they might be given eternal life. Love is shown through acts of self-sacrifice that serve another in need of help. Love is a motivation of our heart – a concern for the good of another that manifests itself in acts of self-sacrifice to bring about that particular good. Love is defined and displayed through the propitiation of Christ.

Propitiation is a sacrifice that satisfies God’s wrath on sin. When Jesus died as our substitute, God’s wrath was poured out in full upon Him. We are rescued from divine condemnation through His substitution.

Love is acts of self-sacri-

fice that serve another for his good. Husbands are called to love their wives.

Do you men sacrifice your time, your hobbies, or your interests, to serve the emotional, physical, or spiritual needs of your wife? Christians are called to love one another. Do you sacrificially-serve one another? What specific acts of self-sacrificial service toward a fellow believer can you identify in your life? We are called to love our enemies. You may think that this point is a bit far but it is exactly what God has done for us, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8).

The definition of love is displayed ultimately and perfectly in the cross of Christ on behalf of guilty undeserving sinners. Is that kind of self-sacrificing service a part of your life? Do you love like God loves? Do you love at all in a world driven by greed and selfishness? “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (1 John 4:11).

If you worked there, ever ate a Dutchburger, onion rings, had a rootbeer, or just drove past the building, stop by and talk about your memories.

Opportunities Missed At our request, our guest went to the piano and played for us. He played and sang a song he had written himself. It was beautiful. From where I was seated, I could watch his hands move nimbly across the keys; and for the umpteenth time, I wished I could play the piano.

What makes my wish more painful is that I took piano lessons for nearly seven years, but I refused to practice. One day my parents sat me down and said, “If you won’t practice, you must quit taking lessons.” Both my parents and my teacher told me I would one day regret squandering this opportunity. They were right.

It is not the only opportunity I have missed. My Grandpa, the only grandparent I ever knew, lived with us the last year of his life. Sometimes he would ask me to sit down and talk with him. I would do so briefly, but I was 13 and he was 75. He would soon sense my anxiousness and excuse me. Now I wish I had gotten to know him better.

When I was 21, my un-

cle Harvey came to see me. I was in college and had a summer job, but we went to lunch together.

Uncle Harvey’s only son would have been a few years older than me, but he was killed in the war.

Looking back on it now, I realize Uncle Harvey was hoping for some companionship from me. I didn’t see it then. It was another missed opportunity.

Today we Americans can worship God at any time at any church we choose.

It is a marvelous opportunity, but our churches are seldom full. We declare we would fight to keep this freedom, but we don’t seize the opportunity. In all probability, this freedom will remain throughout your lifetime and mine. But let me ask you; is it really a valuable freedom if we don’t use it? I mean, if you don’t see and accept an opportunity, isn’t it worse than never having it?

The Bible “exhorts” us to encourage one another to “assemble” for worship.

(Hebrews 10:25) That is what I hope this column will do.

Obituaries John “Jack” Lucas John “Jack” Lucas, 89, of Moberly, MO, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2014, at his home.

Jack was born on February 12, 1925, in Macon, MO, the son of William Riley and Anne (O’Connor) Lucas.

Jack is survived by his wife Charlanne of the home; two step-children, Cindy Latimer of Huntsville, MO, Fred Latimer of Moberly, MO; two grandchildren, Kristen Latimer of Moberly, MO, Carson Latimer of Huntsville, MO; one brother Dick Lucas of Macon and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous brothers and sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Macon with Father Dave Veit officiating. Burial, with full military honors, was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Macon.

Stella Mae Tuggle

Stella Mae Tuggle, age 84 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

Born October 26, 1929 in Whitham, Missouri, she was the daughter of Robert E. and Eva M. (Billups) Pippin. On February 17, 1951 in La Plata, Missouri, she married Billy Tuggle who preceded her in death on November 7, 2005.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; two sons, Tom and Willie Tuggle; one grandson, Derek Tuggle; one brother, Jimmy Pippin; two sisters, Judy Brown and Peggy Thomas; and two brothers-in-law, Bobby Buck and Louie Vitali.

Surviving is one son, J.R. Tuggle and wife Molly of La Plata; two daughters, Susie Tuggle and Lindsey Evans of La Plata and Janet Tuggle of La Plata; three brothers, Virgil Pippin and wife Colleen of Elmer, Missouri, Glen Pippin and wife Sherry of La Plata, and Loren Pippin and wife Patsey of La Plata; two sisters, Verna Buck of La Plata and Cora Voyles and husband Larry of La Plata; seven grandchildren, Harry Tuggle, Ryan Tuggle and wife Toni, Rodney Tuggle, Lisa McDow and husband Kris, Cassie Robinson and husband Josh, Greg Tuggle and Laura Tuggle; ten great grandchildren, Kalie Lene, Madisyn, Hunter, Haylea and Ella Tuggle, Haygan and Alivia Robinson, Roxie McDow, Dallas Smith, and Lawren; two daughters-in-law, Barbara and Mary Tuggle both of La Plata; two brothers-in-law, Ronnie Brown of Linwood, Kansas and Jerry Thomas of La Plata; one sister-in-law, Sue Vitali of Galesburg, Illinois; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Stella lived most of her life in La Plata where she was a 1949 graduate of La Plata High School. She was employed at Hollister Inc. in Kirksville, Missouri for several years, and was a member of the La Plata Baptist Church. Stella enjoyed quilting, watching baseball, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the La Plata Baptist Church. Officiating was Billy Pippin. Burial was in the La Plata Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harry Tuggle, Rodney Tuggle, Greg Tuggle, Ryan Tuggle, J.R. Tuggle, and Lindsey Evans.

Jeannie Dale Foster Jeannie Dale Foster, 49, of Liberty, MO, formerly of Macon, Mo, passed away Tuesday, May 27th She was born on August 15, 1964, in Macon.

She is survived by her father, Don, and wife Phyllis of Macon; two sisters, Julie Belt and husband Jeff of Macon, Jenny Barr and husband Travis of Centralia; three nephews, Trevor Belt of Liberty, MO, Tyler Belt of Macon, John Mason Barr of Centralia; one niece, Mariah Barr of Centralia; three uncles, Bill Hall and wife Margaret of Macon, Dick Hall and wife Martha of Moberly, Robert Hall of Sand Point, Idaho; one aunt, Neola Foster of Lee’s Summit, Mo and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Connie Foster, her sister, Janie Sue, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Hutton and McElwain Funeral Home in Macon with Reverend Julius Ketsenburg officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens north of Macon.

There will be a Visitation at Compass Evangelical Free Church at 600 Silvey Street in Columbia, on Thursday, June 5, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be on Friday, June 6, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church. There will be Graveside/Committal at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Macon on Friday, June 6, 2014, at 2:00 p.m.

Progressive Farmerettes

The Progressive Farmerettes met May 28 with 5 members and one guest present.

Meeting was hosted by Iris Chaney. All repeated the pledge to the flag and Iris gace a devotion, “Puppy Love.”

Roll call was answered by each person showing their senior picture. The minutes and treasurer’s report were given. Door prize and penny drill winners were Paula and Lama. Iris read a short story entitled “Discouraged”. Paula will be the June hostess on Tuesday, June 24th instead of Wednesday. Roll call will be a photo and a memory of our dad.

FDA Proposes Updates To Nutrition Facts on Food Packages The U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed in February to update the Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods to reflect the latest scientific information, including the link between diet and chronic diseases such as obesity and heart disease. The proposed label also would replace out-of-date serv-

ing sizes to better align with how much people really eat, and it would feature a fresh design to highlight key parts of the label such as calories and serving sizes.

“Our guiding principle here is very simple: that you as a parent and a consumer should be able to walk into your local gro-

cery store, pick up an item off the shelf, and be able to tell whether it’s good for your family,” said First Lady Michelle Obama. “So this is a big deal, and it’s going to make a big difference for families all across this country.”

Hamburg, M.D. “To remain relevant, the FDA’s newly proposed Nutrition Facts label incorporates the latest in nutrition science as more has been learned about the connection between what we eat and the development of serious chronic diseases impacting millions of Americans.”

Some of the changes to the label the FDA proposed today would: Require information about the amount of “added sugars” in a food product. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans states that intake of added sugar is too high in the U.S. population and should be reduced. The FDA proposes to include “added sugars” on the label to help consumers know how much sugar has been added to the product.

Update serving size requirements to reflect the amounts people currently eat. What and how much people eat and drink has changed since the serving sizes were first put in place in 1994. By law, serving sizes must be based on what people actually eat, not on what people “should” be eating. Present calorie and nutrition information for the whole package of certain food products that could be consumed in one sitting.

Present “dual column” labels to indicate both “per serving” and “per package” calorie and nutrition information for larger packages that could be consumed in one sitting or multiple sittings.

Require the declaration of potassium and vitamin D, nutrients that some in the U.S. population are not getting enough of, which puts them at higher risk for chronic disease. Vitamin D is important for its role in bone health. Potassium is beneficial in lowering blood pressure. Vitamins A and C would no longer be required on the label, though manufacturers could declare them voluntarily.

Revise the Daily Values for a variety of nutrients such as sodium, dietary fiber and Vitamin D. Daily Values are used to calculate the Percent Daily Value on the label, which helps consumers understand the nutrition information in the context of a total daily diet.

While continuing to require “Total Fat,” “Saturated Fat,” and “Trans Fat” on the label, “Calories from Fat” would be removed because research shows the type of fat is more important than the amount.

Help Dad Perfect His Grill Skills

Get Grilled!

What’s summer without the scent of freshly grilled food wafting through the air? You can slap just about anything on the barbecue, from hot dogs to halibut, and it will taste great-as long as you know your grilling ABCs. Here are five simple tips to make sure you wind up with burgers to flip over, instead of some sad, pattyshaped lumps of carbon.

Choose Wisely: There are a lot of different grill designs out there. Which is right for you? Start by choosing your fuel. Many people prefer the taste imparted by charcoal briquettes. Others go whole hog with mesquite.

On the other hand, gas grills heat up faster, allowing for spur-of-themoment “let’s grill!” meals on weeknights and make it easier to control the flame.

Which fuel you use is really a matter of preference, but in any case, you also need to think about the size and shape of your grill. Don’t overbuy. If you live alone and rarely cook for more than a few friends, getting a five-foot-long grill is just a waste of fuel and space.

Even so, you want to have enough room to be able to set aside items that cook more quickly than the rest.

If you’re going for a gas grill, try to get one with more than one burner so that you have the option of cooking at two different

heat levels. Bun racks, which allow food to warm and lightly toast without burning, are also a nice feature.

Keep It Clean: You might not enjoy it, but scrubbing that grill after every use will make it a lot more fun to cook on. In fact, smart barbecuers clean their grills while they’re grilling, scraping off stuck bits of food before they have a chance to get burned on. After you’re done grilling, raise the flames to burn off as much food as you can and then scrub the grill with a wire brush. (This is easier to do with a gas grill.) For charcoal grills, wait until the ash and charcoals have thoroughly cooled (and we mean thoroughly!) to shovel them into a heatsafe container. Don’t leave ashes in a barbecue for long periods of time, as they can absorb moisture, which could lead to rust.

If your grill gets really gunky, soak it in warm, soapy water for an hour or two and then scrub it with steel wool.

Get Ready: An unwatched grill can lead to disaster, so make sure you have all the tools and ingredients you need in place before you start. One item to bring with you is a small dish of oil and a paper towel, so you can oil the grill before starting. This will help keep food from sticking.

You also want to preheat the grill for a few minutes; again, this will keep food from sticking to the bars.

Play It Safe: Outdoor grills are meant to be used, well, outdoors. Grilling in an enclosed area, such as a tent or garage, puts you at risk for both carbonmonoxide poisoning and fire. Ideally, you would locate your grill on a flat stone or concrete surface, but if you must place it on wood or grass, purchase a splatter mat to minimize the risk of fire. And don’t neglect food safety.

Make sure to have clean dishes to put your grilled fish and meats in when they’re done-don’t put them back on the same platter they sat on when they were raw. Invest in a food thermometer so you can tell when things are properly cooked, and if you want to baste things with a marinade, reserve some for that purpose before you marinate your raw ingredients.

Don’t Get Too Saucy: Most barbecue sauces have a fair amount of sugar, which burns easily.

So start your chicken (or kebabs, or whatever) au naturel and wait to slather on the sauce until near the end of the grilling time. That way, you can make sure your food gets properly cooked without turning your tangy glaze into a coal-black crust.

The seasoned griller commands an arsenal of experience and recipes, all having been painstakingly passed through the generations and perfected over time and temperature. The origin of these tasty traditions usually can be found in family, and the one often deserving the credit is dear old Dad. Southern grilling guru Fred Thompson, author of the new book “WilliamsSonoma Grill Master” a collection of back-tobasics tips and recipes, recalls the influence of his father as early as nine years old. “Every Saturday night my father grilled rib-eye steaks. I wanted to keep up with daddy so I hung out at the grill,” he says. “I was fascinated with what my father could do.”

Take a page out of Thompson’s book and learn the secrets to grilling the perfect steak: • Buy good meat: Grassfed and grass-finished beef tastes better and has a bolder flavor that holds up particularly well against the lick of the grill’s flames.

• Simple seasoning: Sprinkle steak liberally on both sides with salt and pepper when you take it out of the refrigerator. Brush steaks on both sides with a little olive oil (not extra virgin). This facilitates the heat transfer, so you can get an evenly browned crust and a delicious steak house flavor.

• Timing is important: There’s nothing worse than a rubbery, tasteless overcooked steak. Professionals use touch to gauge doneness, and so can you.

Touch your index finger to your cheek. When the meat feels this way, the steak is rare. Touch the tip of your nose. That firmness equates to medium.

Your forehead is well done. “But please don’t go there,” says Thompson.

• Let it rest: If you cut into a piece of beef as soon as it comes off the grill, you will lose precious juices. Give the proteins in the steak the opportunity to unwind a little bit from the heat they have just experienced. Let most steaks rest at least five to 10 minutes to give the juices time to redistribute evenly throughout the meat.

• Goes great with: Skip the steak sauce. A pat of plain or compound butter is the perfect finish.

Nearly all of the measles cases this year have been associated with international travel by unvaccinated people.

“The current increase in measles cases is being driven by unvaccinated people, primarily U.S. residents, who got measles in other countries, brought the virus back to the United States and spread to others in communities where many people are not vaccinated,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, assistant surgeon general and director of CDC’s National Center for Immunizations and Respiratory Diseases.

“Many of the clusters in the U.S. began following travel to the Philippines where a large outbreak has been occurring since October 2013.”

Of the 288 cases, 280 (97 percent) were associated with importations from at least 18 countries. More than one in seven cases has led to hospitalization.

Ninety percent of all measles cases in the United States were in people who were not vaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown. Among the U.S. residents who were not vaccinated, 85 percent were religious, philosophical or personal reasons.

The proposed updates reflect new dietary recommendations, consensus reports, and national survey data, such as the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, nutrient intake recommendations from the Institute of Medicine, and intake data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The FDA also considered extensive input and comments from a wide range of stakeholders.

“By revamping the Nutrition Facts label, FDA wants to make it easier than ever for consumers to make better informed food choices that will support a healthy diet.” said Michael R. Taylor, the FDA’s deputy

commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine.

“To help address obesity, one of the most important public health problems facing our country, the proposed label would drive attention to calories and serving sizes.”

The Nutrition Facts label has been required on food packages for 20 years, helping consumers better understand the nutritional value of foods so they can make healthy choices for themselves and their families. The label has not changed significantly since 2006 when information on trans fat had to be declared

on the label, prompting manufacturers to reduce partially hydrogenated oils, the main source of trans fat, in many of their products.

The changes proposed affect all packaged foods except certain meat, poultry and processed egg products, which are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The FDA is also proposing to make corresponding updates to the Supplement Facts label on dietary supplements where applicable.
