Show Me Honor Flight Completes Mission

Macon County bands “Keota” and “Full Circle” will headline this year’s entertainment at the Atlanta Homecoming. “It’s a Family Tradition” is the theme for this year’s event to be Thursday, June 28 through Sunday, June 30, 2013.

“We want folks of all ages to have the same great experiences we have all had with Homecomings in the past,” said committee member Aaron Baker. “A new generation of volunteers is working hard to Honor flight participants Albert Petrik escorted by son-in law Rick Gilmore are greeted by Sedalia, Missouri Boy Scouts on their return from Washington D.C.

The Honor Flight Program was created to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. The group transports our heroes from throughout Missouri to Washington, D.C., to visit and reflect at their memorials at no cost to them. Priority is given to senior veterans – WWII survivors, along with their escorts. The Honor Flight is a volunteer organization and funded by donations from individuals, organizations and businesses who wish to see our aging veterans honored before it is too late. Petrik and Gilmore returned with an escort of forty-eight motorcycles leading them into Sedalia where the fire department had a water cannon arch the bus drove through. Boy scouts, area citizens, and family members welcomed the returning veterans.

The event will kickoff on Friday, June 28 with a pulled pork dinner at 6:00 p.m., followed by contests for Little Mr. & Mrs. Atlanta, Miss Atlanta and live entertainment by a Christian Band, Joshua 24:15, from Moberly.

Keota will perform on Friday evening, starting at 8:30 p.m. The band includes Ronnie Truitt, Mary Beth Truitt, Jace Weber, Louis Fiquet III and Martina Miller. The band’s genre is “acoustic with attitude, Americana.”

Saturday morning will feature a biscuits and gravy breakfast followed by a fishing derby, baby show and Future Little Mr. & Ms. Atlanta.

Saturday’ parade will be held at 11:00 a.m., the only major scheduling change from previous years. The parade will be followed by a tractor show, car show, sand volleyball tournament, kids’ activities, frog and turtle show and pet show throughout the afternoon.

Saturday evening will include local entertainment by Shelby Tipton and Dale Wilson, the Newlywed Game and a pie auction.

Full Circle will also perform on Saturday evening, starting at 8:00 p.m. The band includes Paul Claiborne, Ashlie Meisner, Abbie Wyman, Kevin Myers, Arnold Compton and Randy Patrick. The band describes their music as “fresh and live” as they play a variety of classics and today’s hits.

Concessions including ice cream and homemade desserts, Bingo, drawings, a bounce house, slide, kid games and a cakewalk will be held throughout Friday evening and Saturday.

Sunday’s schedule includes “Church in the Park” at 11:00 a.m. and an “Ol’ Timers’ Softball Game” at the school at 5:30 p.m.

First Annual La Plata FFA Banquet On May 16th, 2013, the La Plata FFA chapter held their first Chapter Banquet highlighting the year’s activities and recognizes members and their accomplishments.

A meal was provided by the FFA for members and guests and students were recognized through plaques, pins and certificates.

The first year was packed with activities from ground breaking, and building construction to Area III Battle of the Chapters, Nemo Fairparking cars, ribbon cutting and building dedication, Area

III Leadership Conference, chapter movie night, National FFA Convention, Area III Public Speaking, chapter fruit sales, chapter chartering, chapter Barnwarming, Area III FFA Barnwarming, La Plata R-II Christmas Project, Chapter Christmas party, Greenhand Motivational Conference, FFA Week, State FFA Convention, and Area III FFA Banquet.

Career Development Events prepare students for careers in agriculture through practicing criticial thinking skills by “hands-on” and writ-

ten assessments. FFA Knowledge Team qualified for State through Area and District competitions and finished a Group II Team; Jessica Davison, Jeana Noel (Group I Individual at State), Ally Gregory, and Kalie Lene. Entomology Team qualified for state by placing third at districts and finished a Group II Team; Hunter Howe (High Individual at Districts and Group I Individual at State), Preston Payne (Group I Individual), Molly Safley, and MaKay Belt. Dairy Foods participated at districts; Laryn Pinkston,

Samm Jett, Logan Curtis, and Ben Bolden. The Ag Mechanics also participated at district competition; Cordel Bane, Nathan Peterson, and Brendan Curtis.

Upsilon Mu Senior Tea The members of Upsilon Mu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held a Senior Tea for the La Plata High School Senior Girls and Guests recently at the McLorn House in La Plata, Missouri. Those attending were: Molly Safley, Makay Belt, Elizabeth Janes and Taylor Snodgrass and their mothers.

Guest speakers were: Polly Matteson, of Truman State University and ,Brook Fleshman, Counselor of La Plata High School.

The afternoon began with pictures of the senior girls and their guests. Each girl attending received a photo frame for their photo. Following the photos a luncheon was served with finger foods, desserts and tea.

Adair County R-II School Receives 2013 Distinction In Performance Award

Adair County R-II School was one of 40 school districts in the northeast Missouri area honored by the Northeast Regional Professional Development Center, Truman State University, and the Missouri Association of School Administrators at a banquet on April 25th in Kirksville. Approximately 162 school board members, administrators, teachers, and students attended.

The banquet was held in the Student Union Build-

ing on the Truman State University campus. The dinner was followed by the presentation of awards to representatives from the school districts. Attending school districts honored were Adair County R-II, Boncl R-X, Bowling Green R-I, Brunswick R-II, Bucklin R-II, Callao C-8, Canton R-V, Higbee R-VIII, Holliday C-2, Kirksville R-III, Knox County R-I, Lewis County C-1, Linn Co. R-I, Louisiana R-II, Macon R-I, Madison C-3, Marceline

R-V, Marion County R-II, Meadville R-IV, Middle Grove C-1, Moberly, Monroe City R-I, North Shelby, Northeast Randolph R-IV, Palmyra R-I, Putnam County R-I, Salisbury R-IV, Schuyler County R-I, Shelby County R-IV, and Westran R-I. Mr. Roger Kurtz, President of the Missouri Association of School Administrators, recognized the districts’ accomplishments. Also helping celebrate the districts’ accomplishments were Dr.

Troy Paino, President of Truman State University; Dr. Janet Gooch, Dean of School of Health Sciences and Education, Truman State University; Dr. Paul Yoder, Chair of the Department of Education, Truman State University; Darl Davis, Director of Northeast Regional Professional Development Center; and J.D. King, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Area Supervisor.

This is the 8th year Adair County R-II has received the Distinction in Performance Award.

Representatives of Adair County R-II at the celebration at Truman State University on April 25th included: Christy Grissom, Counselor; Brent Doolin, Principal; Curtis Gordon, Board President. The presentation was made by Mr. Roger Kurtz, Missouri Association of School Administrators President, and Mr. J.D. King, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Area Supervisor.

American Legion Contests

The stump your friends photo from last week had several guesses. The first one to call in with the correct guess was Roma Rodriquez, she guessed Kenneth (Skeeter) Graham. Once a year, the National American Legion holds an essay contest on “Americanism” and also a “Poppy Poster” contest for all grades at the Bucklin R-11 School. The Bucklin American Legion Auxiliary, Post 57 honored all the winners on May 19, 2013.

There were three classes that were judged. Class I were grades 3 & 4, Class ll were grades 5 & 6 and Class lll were grades 7 & 8. The Auxiliary gave 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place winners a cash award plus a certificate.

The Auxiliary welcomes all grades of the Bucklin R-II to enter the Americanism Essay and Poppy Poster Contest each Year. Congratulations to all the entries for a job well done.

Obituary

Willis C. Shumaker

Willis C. Shumaker, age 85, of La Plata, Missouri passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Missouri.

Born March 7, 1928 in Adair County, he was the son of Thomas and Tina (Sallee) Shumaker. On February 18, 1956 in Kirksville, Missouri, he married Ruth Irene Barnett who preceded him in death on April 17, 2004.

Also preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers Pearl and Hollis Shumaker.

He is survived by two step-daughters, Barbara Carter of La Plata, Missouri and Judy Schreckise of Kirksville, Missouri; three nieces, Ronda VanHara of Gifford, Missouri, Vonda Bender of Clarence, Missouri, and Holly Williams of La Plata, Missouri; one nephew, Tommy Shumaker of La Plata, Missouri; and friend Corinne Corrick of La Plata, Missouri.

Willis lived most all of his life in the La Plata Community. He served his country in United States Army during the Korean War. He was employed by MoDOT for 31 years. He was a member of the La Plata American Legion.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013 at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri, with Pastor Hillis Prather officiating. Music was provided by Janis Mitten playing and singing “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”.

Burial was in the Yarrow Cemetery. Pallbearers were be Jay Matticks, Kirby Bailey, Mike Gunnels, Eldon Corrick, Gerald Corrick and Tommy Shumaker.

The Garden Club

The Garden Club met at the home of Enid Moots May 20th 2013 at 1:30 pm with Donna Kelly as co hostess. Meeting was called to order by President Irene Osborn. The pledge of allegiance was repeated by all and also the pledge to the Missouri State Flag. Roll call was answered by 13 members telling of experiences with Poison Ivy. Old business was discussed and we had none.

New business was asked for and we had none.

Penny drill was won by Jerry Prather. We had four Birthdays and all received their gifts from their Secret Pals. Enid gave the program on Poison Ivy and it was very interesting. A game on Poison Ivy was won by Margaret Kincaid. Refreshments of Ice Cream Sodas, mints, nuts and party mix was served.

Visiting was enjoyed by all.

Madeline H. Cole, age 83, of La Plata, Missouri passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013 at the La Plata Nursing in La Plata, Missouri. Services are pending at Travis Funeral Chapel, La Plata, Missouri.

Atlanta Community Club

The Atlanta Community Club held its meeting on May 28th with seven members present. A carry-in meal was served at noon. Following the meal, the president, Virginia

Grubbs, conducted a brief business meeting. Regular reports were presented and approved. It was announced that the next meeting would be held on June 24th.

Those present were Clifford and Virginia Grubbs, Glen Parrish, Kathy Baker, Betty Baker. Aaron Baker and Lila Wiggans.

Birth Announcement

Isaac Michael James Jamie and Ashlee James, Maryville, proudly announce the birth of their second child, a son, Isaac Michael James.

Isaac was born at 8:32 p.m., May 7, 2013, at Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph. He weighed 10 pounds, 5 ounces and was 21.5 inches long.

Isaac joins his two-year-old sister, Ava Lee Moriah.

Maternal grandparents are Philip and Aleta Casady of Bucklin. Great grandparents are Margaret Selmon and the late T. L. (John) Selmon of Bonaire, GA, and the late Ruth Selmon and P. R. (Pearley) and Virginia Casady of Bucklin. Paternal grandparents are Clay James of Graham, and Bob and Yvonne Killian, and the late Marsha Killian of Garland, TX. Great grandparents are Mitchell and Sadie James, Whitehall, IL, and the late Jim and Virginia Bates, Hettick, IL.

LOCAL NEWS Floyd A. Walker

Floyd A. Walker, age 89, of Warrensburg, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, at Country Club Care Center. He was born March 25, 1924, in Knox County, Missouri, the son of Verna and May (Tonkinson) Walker.On November 22, 1952, he was united in marriage to GAnna Bagby in Salem, Arkansas.

Floyd graduated from LaPlata High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He received his Bachelor in Science degree from Northeast Missouri Teacher’s College in Kirksville, MO, and then worked at LaPlata High School as the football, basketball, and baseball coach from 1949 to 1956. Floyd attended and received his Masters degree from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ in 1954. In 1956, he and his family moved from LaPlata to St. Charles, MO, where he taught school and coached until 1962, Floyd moved to Warrensburg to be the head baseball coach and assistant basketball coach. He completed his Doctorate in Education at the University of Arkansas in 1966, and became Athletic Director at Central Missouri State University a position he held until 1980. He remained on staff as a professor until 1986. Floyd and GAnna moved to Raytown and when he accepted the position of Associate Athletic Director at UMKC from 1986 until his official retirement in 1992. That was the year, they moved back to Warrensburg for good. Floyd was a member of the First Christian Church of Warrensburg, where he served as deacon, chairman of the church board and elder. He was a member of the American Legion Post #131, where he was a past commander, and a member of the VFW Post #2513. Floyd was a member and past President of the Warrensburg Kiwanis Club as well as several professional organizations. He served on the NCAA Division II Basketball Tournament Committee and was one of the founding members of the Rusty Zippers Club in Warrensburg. In 2000, he was inducted into the Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.

Floyd is survived by his wife GAnna; two sons: Burt Walker and wife Nancy of Lee’s Summit, MO; and Bill Walker and wife Karen of Des Moines, IA; one daughter, Barbara Walker of Winston Salem, NC; one sister, Betty Herr of Quincy, IL; five grandchildren: Jennifer Ness and husband Ryan of Grinnell, IA; Ryan Walker of Chicago, IL; Vincent Walker and Claire Walker, both of Des Moines, IA; and Ruan Walker of Winston Salem, NC; and three great-grandchildren, Connor, Brooke, and Megan Ness.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wuanita Perry.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, at the First Christian Church in Warrensburg with Pastor Jerry Basye officiating.

Interment followed at Warrensburg Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided

by Warrensburg American Legion Post #131 and VFW Post #2513.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church Building Fund or Johnson County Hospice and both can be left in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg.

While in school, have completed the equivalent of at least two years (360 hours) of systematic school instruction in agricultural education at or above the ninth grade level, which includes a supervised agricultural experience program. Have earned and productively invested at least $1000, or worked at least 300 hours in excess of scheduled class time, or a combination thereof, in a supervised agricultural experience program.

Demonstrate leadership ability by: performing 10 procedures of parliamentary law, giving a six minute speech on a topic relating to agriculture of FFA. Serving as an officer, committee chairperson or participating member of a chapter committee. Have a satisfactory scholastic record as certified by the local agricultural educa-

tion instructor and the principal or superintendent. In addition to those qualification student in Missouri must be in the top 7% of members within each chapter. Katlyn Asher received her State Degree this year at the 85th Annual State FFA Convention, she is the daughter of Kellie and Wesley Wehner of rural La Plata. Katlyn’s Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) Program consists of raising boar goats, chickens and pigs.

The Greenhand Degree is given to 1st year FFA Members meeting a given the following requirements; students must be enrolled in an ag class, have plans for an SAE, learn and explain the FFA Creed, motto, salute, FFA Mission statement, FFA emblem, colors, have a knowledge of the code of ethics, own

a FFA manual and demonstrate a knowledge of the FFA history. Star Greenhand recipients demonstrate a vast working knowledge of the FFA in and outside the classroom. Star Greenhands include; Freshman – Jessica Davison, Sophomore – Jeana Noel, Junior – Hunter Howe and Senior – Molly Safley.

Members or groups inducted as Honorary Chapter Degree Reciepants include; La Plata R-II Board of Education and the La Plata Ag Department Advisory Council members. Both groups of individuals have demonstrated a great deal of support in starting and maintaining the La Plata FFA and Ag Program.

The evening concluded with new officer installation and closing ceremonies by current President Hunter Howe.

COMMENTARY Blonde But Blunt

JEFFCOAT and a couple arms on the couch, with a little bit of “umpft” he’da made it standing straight up. Little bugger! He’s so darn cute!

His parents have decided to follow the books and introduce one food at a time, so for a while we were on green beans, but have recently introduced carrots.

And for a 3rd and 4th introduction, when mom and dad aren’t around, I’ve taken it upon myself to introduce a small taste of whatever I want to!!

LOL, don’t tell! But I can tell you he doesn’t much like beets! I love ‘em! Been doing some spring cleaning and gearing up for the La Plata City Wide Yard Sale this weekend. I have lots of trinkets and stuff, as well as clothes, shoes, purses, knick knacks, candles, and of course my junk is your treasure. LOL, so hope to see ya there! I didn’t really think that my little apartment would hold that much stuff, guess I was wrong. Actually don’t really know how it all fit in that closet! WOW! Hope it doesn’t rain and the weather is great, if not……..

Among the several projects accomplished over the weekend, I sharpened the kitchen knives. I wasn’t aware we had so many, but I persevered and got it done. Fearing my wife might forget I had sharpened the knives, I installed a card over the knife block reading, “Danger!”

As I felt the edge of each knife, I remembered the words of Hebrews 4:12, “The Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing the soul and spirit.” The Bible is the world’s bestseller.

That should translate into much biblical knowledge; but too often it does not. It is common for households to have many Bibles but for the home’s residents to be biblically ignorant.

If you fall into the category above, let me offer a suggestion. Read the Bible like you would read a manual. The Bible is a manual for living. Let show you what I mean. I purchased a mechanical manual at the bookstore. We were working on my teenage son’s car, and I needed instructions. I would never have read this book except I needed the information it contained. I read through many pages of boring data until I found the material

I needed. What I learned helped me that day and many times afterward.

Bible truths are like that, once you have learned them, they come to mind just when you need them—and sometimes when you would rather not hear them.

Drake was old and bitter. Long ago someone mistreated him. With time on his hands, he plotted how to get even. One day while planning this payback, he remembered the words, “Let not the sun go down on your wrath.”

(Ephesians 4:12) He thought, “The sun is about to go down on me for good. I am going to die a bitter old man.” Before he went to bed that night, he vowed to forgive his antagonists so he could live the rest of his days in joy.

While parking to attend an important meeting, I saw an obviously drunken man lying in the gutter. If I tried to help him, I would doubtless miss my meeting. But I could pretend I did not see him, and no one would know. Suddenly Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan came to mind. I helped the man and missed the meeting.

With our current weather pattern the best aide I could provide is a little bit more dry I know (little bit because I remember last year) but I don’t have that kind of power. I am going to discuss a weather aide that is available to farmers that you should be interested in and can benefit you.

Horizon Point is a weather aide from the University of Missouri that provides site specific weather information to your e-mail. When you sign up you provide the location of your farm so the information can be for your location. There is a wide range of information you can receive such as: planting depth soil temperature, weed and insect scouting aids, wind and precipitation (forecast and historical plus probability), animal comfort indices, rainfall runoff estimator and temperature information. You determine what information you would like and the frequency with which you will get it through a secure site. There is no charge for this service.

Weather? Well I feel like a torn page in the book somewhere between “The Wizard of Oz” tornados, the great sun dried prairies of “On The Banks of Plum Creek” and “The River Runs Through It” with all the rain. I don’t know whether to wear boots or sandals to work, to carry an umbrella or not or to wear a hat with a tie so it doesn’t blow off the top of my head. Missouri Weather!! Don’t ya love it!

Had a funny thing happen to me last week. Was on my way south and stopped at Hardee’s in Macon to get a big ole ice tea.

Let’s back up, you should know that the license plate on the back of my truck is pink and boosts a big Duck Commander (from Duck Dynasty) on it. So I order my tea and drive through, I also ordered a breakfast sandwich that I guess they had to make, because they asked me to drive up and wait. So I did. And I waited and waited and finally a girl came out of that little side door and then smiled and started running up to my truck. To her sadness, there I sat. She said “Oh I thought with that license plate you were one of the Robertson boys”. Nope, sorry, just me. I sometimes forget to shave my legs, but didn’t know my face was that furry and fuzzy, so guess I need to make an appointment with my professional waxer. LOL But it was funny! Guess you had to be there!

Little Lee (my 7 month old grandson) is beginning to explore my house a little better. He’s starting to crawl just a tad. Right now he gets on all fours and wavers back and forth, but last week, he finally lifted up those little knees and took off. Even caught him once with one leg up

The coo of the Morning Dove breaks the silence as I sit watching a breath taking sunrise, coffee steaming besides me. So many vibrant colors shimmer on the calm lake, double exposure from the sky to the waters edge greet my eyes. All is waking up on my lady’s land telling me of another perfect day coming our way. The rains have made our garden a picture of love & hard work come into view, how pretty to see the fruits of our labor so lush and green. Landscaping has started, now to get the new bushes, trees & flowers all in place, I am hoping that the birds, especially the “hummers” will be attracted to all the flowering pieces that will be planted.

I have started making friends with a little squirrel, he doesn’t seem very afraid of me and lets me get just a few steps from him before up the tree he goes, but waits for the cookies that I have left in the tree hole for him. I usually see him at a certain tree in the yard, but today he was on the deck, I think that’s a sign we are getting closer, it will take time but we I feel will become buddies, he loves the cookies!

The campgrounds have been full the last few weekends. The lake is alive with boats, jet ski’s, fishermen and the smell of cook outs, this is the season that we all appreciate and enjoy.

the several other counties in Missouri and the National Sheriff’s Association to provide assistance to Sheriff’s Office employees in Oklahoma that were affected by the May 20thtornado. According to the Oklahoma Sheriff’s Association, at least 24 Sheriff’s Office employees have lost most, if not all, of their homes and belongings. The employees from Cleveland County, Oklahoma County, and Pottawatomie County were working that day and came home to a pile of rubble. “I can’t imagine having my Deputies going home to nothing after a day of tragedy. Even though their lives were spared, many have nothing left but splinters on a foundation. We are doing everything we can so those families can get back on their feet and continue to serve their communities.” The Macon County Sheriff’s Office is asking for any help the public may be able to provide. “We have started collecting items here at the Sheriff’s Office such as clothing for all ages, hygiene products, toys for children of any age, and canned food items and we will continue to receive those items until Sunday, June 2.” The National Sheriff’s Association has started a relief fund where you may go online and make a donation. Go to www.sheriffs.org/disasterrelief to send a donation. “In times like these we will be there to help pick up the pieces for our brothers and sisters in the law enforcement community.”

May 27 we continue with 1-1/2 inches of rain, followed by Sunday’s rain of 1 inch and 6/10 inches Tuesday brought. Friday we had only ½ inch. What a week of rain and cooler temperatures. We have entered June with brighter days and a hope for more sunshine all week!

Well here we are into June and it is still cool and rainy. Where is that good old, hot summer? I must say that I have never had so many rose blossoms ever. All of my 50 roses are blooming beautifully.

Last Thursday I had a wonderful day. I went to Moberly with my daughter Laura and granddaughter Katherine. We did some shopping, had some lunch and went to Ritters and got some plants and some produce. They had a great variety of both. We had lots of fun, and a great dinner.

Saturday night Norma and Bella Wood came and spent the night with Grandma and Grandpa Truitt. We had a great supper with their cousin Derek. Later we watched a movie. Sunday morning the girls and I went to Sunday School and church.

We had lunch together and later in the afternoon their Mom and Dad, AKA Raymond and Jessica, came to get them.

My grandson Derek has a new seven week old puppy. She is a beautiful black lab mix and we all love her. Our almost two year old Jack Russel Terrier-Beagle mix female Jackie loves the puppy but my four year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cody, who is a male would rather the puppy would go away. Our daughter-inlaw, Jessica, brings her bull dog puppy, Abby, up to play. The three girls have lots of fun running and playing. Cody just sits

and watches them. He acts like a grouchy old male.

My friend Carolyn Hill has been spending lots of time working in her yard and it shows. Carolyn has one of the prettiest yards in town. Last week she went to Kirksville with her sister Marilyn.

The yearly Spelling Bee was held at the Clarence Elementary School on May 17th. The top spellers were Ethan Buzzard, top 4th-5th grade speller, and top speller for three years.

He is the son of Krista and Brandon Buzzard. Jastyn Johnson is top speller 2nd3rd grade speller. He is the son of Jennifer and Kevin Johnson. Congratulations to you both.

Anna Louise VanHouten was presented a Community Volunteer Award at the awards assembly May 22nd. Anna Louise sewed together quilt pieces the children had each made. The quilt now hangs in the school hallway. She is a wonderful volunteer to the Clarence Elementary School.

The Clarence United Methodist Church will be having Vacation Bible School June 10th to the 13th. It will be held daily from 9:30 to noon. Everyone is invited to attend.

Don’t forget the Clarence Homecoming June 19th to 22nd with Family Night to be Wednesday June 19. Hope to see you there.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly Meeting TOPS MO877 in La Plata met Tuesday, June 14th at 6:00 pm in the La Plata Christian Church fellowship hall with 8 members weighing in.

Gail led the Meeting. We opened with our TOPS and KOPS pledges and the “TOPS Rededication Song” led by Karen C. Roll call was; “Did you lose, did you journal and what did you do Saturday?”

Best TOPS loser was Janet with Elaina as runner-up. Best KOPS loser was Veva.

“Welcome to Boot Camp TOPS” is our new summer contest. We are to track our miles walked and our exercise time, plus more and different challenges each week for 13 weeks.

10:00 am we held our “TOPS Workshop” led by area coordinator Cindy Story from Warsaw, Missouri. Our meeting was in the La Plata First Baptist Church Family Life Center. Cindy presented a knowledgeable and encouragingly program giving us the incentive to make changes and try new ideas. There were 23 in attendance from Kirksville, Palmyra, Brookfield, Macon and La Plata chapters.

We adjourned at about 12:30 pm.

One of the changes we have made as a club is not have a weekly challenge each week, especially during boot camp.

American Legion and Auxiliary of La Plata Post 28 The American Legion and Auxiliary of La Plata Post 28 met Wednesday, May 22, at 7pm at the Legion Hall for regular meeting. Commander Clyde Burch called meeting to order with Rev. John Becker giving prayer followed by covering POW Chair, Pledge to Flag and Preamble in unison. President Marie Gladbach presided over auxiliary meeting. Verna Buck call roll, answered by 5 members.

Minutes were read and approved. Old Business reported that Barbara Buck had accompanied Nancy McKenzie Adams to Girls State briefing in Hannibal on April 21. Girls State will be held June 23-29 at Warrensburg. Also attending will be Morgan Kimmell Hannah Larsen with LaDonna White as alternate.

Reported Poppy Days were very successful.

Moberly Area Community College Releases President’s And Dean’s List Moberly Area Community College announces the spring 2013 President’s and Dean’s lists.

One hundred ninetytwo (192) students obtained a 4.00 grade point average in 12 or more semester hours to qualify for the President’s List. This number is higher than spring 2012, when 162 students qualified for the President’s List.

Two hundred sixty-six (266) students obtained between a 3.50 and a 3.99 grade point average in 12 or more semester hours to qualify for the Dean’s List. During the spring 2012 semester, two hundred ninety-two (292) students qualified for the Dean’s List.

Developmental courses and pass/fail courses are not included in the calculation of the grade point average.

by Kathy Nickerson Heartland Christian Academy band students presented their spring concert recently. They are under the direction of Mrs. Eliza Bock, with assistance from Miss Amanda Russman. The performance started with our fifth grade musicians who have been playing less than a year. Even though the students are early in their careers, they made some beautiful music. The high school concert band then played several patriotic numbers.

During breaks in the

evening’s performance, Mrs. Sheryl Rutherford presented awards to high school students for both athletic and academic achievement. We are proud of all these students who excel on the basketball court, the volleyball court, the classroom, and the track. We are even more excited when we see many of them developing godly character and loving God. Music will enrich their lives and open many doors for them. But only Jesus will complete them.

Sixth Graders – Getting Their Hands Dirty As you drive around town and throughout the countryside you are surrounded by farmers planting crops and people planting their gardens for the summer. During the last week of school the La Plata Ag Department, partnered with Mrs. Howe’s sixth graders and planted their own pallet gardens next to the Ag Building.

The class was divided into six groups and each group constructed and planted their own garden. Construction began with a pallet, weed barrier, scissors, a staple gun, soil and a variety of seeds. The weed barrier was placed on the bottom, cut to fit and then stapled to keep soil in the pallet. Students were able to select from a variety of seeds to plant in the gardens.

such as; light, water, fertilizer and days to maturity. Upon selecting the particular seeds students planted them to the required depth and water them in to increase growth potential.

Makes The La Plata Ladies’ Snodgrass Northwest Announces Golfers Spring 2013 Trimester The La Plata Ladies’ Golfers met on Tues., June 4 with 8 members present.

Currently they have 32 teams committed to play their tournament on Tues., June 18. On Monday, June 17 the ladies will meet at 10 a.m. to set up for the tournament. They will divide into a group to go to the church center and prepare for the luncheon and a group to work at the course. Several last minutes details were discussed regarding preparation for the tournament.

Many generous businesses and individuals have donated money and gifts for

the tournament.

Ann will be hostess next week. Nadine was hostess this week. She brought breakfast pizza.

The ladies were divided into two teams of 4 and the front side was played as 9 par threes. Putts were counted. Both teams tied with a score of 25 and 12 putts.

Some of the ladies stayed to play the second nine. Afterwards they replaced Jimmy Hays’ Memorial Tree, which had died, with the help of Darrel Engle and Dwight Tietsort.

Davison says, “Faith was our first Maples Rep Favorite. She has made so many friends among our patrons that I know lots of folks are going to be excited to see her back on the Royal Theatre.”

CHICAGO opens on June 19 and on Friday night June 21 is the first Afterglow of the 2013 season. It will be the 10th Season Street Party with cake and ice cream and entertainment from the Maples Rep Company on Rubey Street in front of the theatre. Afterglows are

always free and always a lot of fun. June 22 is Thank You, Macon County Day.
