Show Me Honor Flight Completes Mission
Macon County bands “Keota” and “Full Circle” will headline this year’s entertainment at the Atlanta Homecoming. “It’s a Family Tradition” is the theme for this year’s event to be Thursday, June 28 through Sunday, June 30, 2013. “We want folks of all ages to have the same great experiences we have all had with Homecomings in the past,” said committee member Aaron Baker. “A new generation of volunteers is working hard to Honor flight participants Albert Petrik escorted by son-in law Rick Gilmore are greeted by Sedalia, Missouri Boy Scouts on their return from Washington D.C.
Bucklin, Missouri residents Albert Petrik World War Two Veteran escorted by his son-in-law Rick Gilmore Vietnam Era Veteran were part of the May 21, 2013 Sedalia, Missouri Show Me Honor Flight. The Honor Flight Program was created to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. The group transports our heroes from throughout Missouri to Washington, D.C., to visit and reflect at their memorials at no cost to them. Priority is given to senior veterans – WWII survivors, along with their escorts. The Honor Flight is a volunteer organization and funded by donations from individuals, organizations and businesses who wish to see our aging veterans honored before it is too late. Petrik and Gilmore returned with an escort of forty-eight motorcycles leading them into Sedalia where the fire department had a water cannon arch the bus drove through. Boy scouts, area citizens, and family members welcomed the returning veterans.

maintain the traditions of good wholesome fun for the entire area.” The event will kickoff on Friday, June 28 with a pulled pork dinner at 6:00 p.m., followed by contests for Little Mr. & Mrs. Atlanta, Miss Atlanta and live entertainment by a Christian Band, Joshua 24:15, from Moberly. Keota will perform on Friday evening, starting at 8:30 p.m. The band includes Ronnie Truitt, Mary Beth Truitt, Jace Weber, Louis Fiquet III and Martina Miller. The band’s genre is “acoustic with attitude, Americana.” Saturday morning will feature a biscuits and gravy breakfast followed by a fishing derby, baby show and Future Little Mr. & Ms. Atlanta. Saturday’ parade will be held at 11:00 a.m., the only major scheduling change from previous years. The parade will be followed by a tractor show, car show, sand volleyball tournament, kids’ activities, frog and turtle show and pet show throughout the afternoon. Saturday evening will include local entertainment by Shelby Tipton and Dale Wilson, the Newlywed Game and a pie auction. Full Circle will also perform on Saturday evening, starting at 8:00 p.m. The band includes Paul Claiborne, Ashlie Meisner, Abbie Wyman, Kevin Myers, Arnold Compton and Randy Patrick. The band describes their music as “fresh and live” as they play a variety of classics and today’s hits. Concessions including ice cream and homemade desserts, Bingo, drawings, a bounce house, slide, kid games and a cakewalk will be held throughout Friday evening and Saturday. First Annual La Plata FFA Banquet On May 16th, 2013, the La Plata FFA chapter held their first Chapter Banquet highlighting the year’s activities and recognizes members and their accomplishments. A meal was provided by the FFA for members and guests and students were recognized through plaques, pins and certificates. The first year was packed with activities from ground breaking, and building construction to Area III Battle of the Chapters, Nemo Fairparking cars, ribbon cutting and building dedication, Area
III Leadership Conference, chapter movie night, National FFA Convention, Area III Public Speaking, chapter fruit sales, chapter chartering, chapter Barnwarming, Area III FFA Barnwarming, La Plata R-II Christmas Project, Chapter Christmas party, Greenhand Motivational Conference, FFA Week, State FFA Convention, and Area III FFA Banquet. Career Development Events prepare students for careers in agriculture through practicing criticial thinking skills by “hands-on” and writ-
ten assessments. FFA Knowledge Team qualified for State through Area and District competitions and finished a Group II Team; Jessica Davison, Jeana Noel (Group I Individual at State), Ally Gregory, and Kalie Lene. Entomology Team qualified for state by placing third at districts and finished a Group II Team; Hunter Howe (High Individual at Districts and Group I Individual at State), Preston Payne (Group I Individual), Molly Safley, and MaKay Belt. Dairy Foods participated at districts; Laryn Pinkston,
Samm Jett, Logan Curtis, and Ben Bolden. The Ag Mechanics also participated at district competition; Cordel Bane, Nathan Peterson, and Brendan Curtis. To receive the State FFA Degree a member must meet the following qualifications: Have received the Chapter FFA Degree, have been an active FFA member for at least two years (24 months) at the time of receiving the State

Upsilon Mu Senior Tea The members of Upsilon Mu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held a Senior Tea for the La Plata High School Senior Girls and Guests recently at the McLorn House in La Plata, Missouri. Those attending were: Molly Safley, Makay Belt, Elizabeth Janes and Taylor Snodgrass and their mothers. Guest speakers were: Polly Matteson, of Truman State University and ,Brook Fleshman, Counselor of La Plata High School. The afternoon began with pictures of the senior girls and their guests. Each girl attending received a photo frame for their photo. Following the photos a luncheon was served with finger foods, desserts and tea.
