2013 District Golf Tournament The 2013 District Golf Tournament took place at the Kirksville Country Club on April 29, 2013. Placing #1 with a score of 81 was Grant Gregory of La Plata. There were an additional four more Macon County golfers who placed in the top 50, including Ben Bolden, Drew Magers, Andrew Perry, and Jake Hodges, all of La Plata. They placed 3rd in the District team standings. Congratulations golfers!

National Train Day 2013

La Plata Amtrak will celebrate National Train Day on Saturday, May 11th. The station will be open from 9 to 3 that day with free coffee and donuts available in the morning, Amtrak Memorabilia Exhibits, Railroad Artwork, Operating Model railroads, Kids Train Cookie Decorating, ATCS monitor display and Q-n-A also a Possible motorcar Display. Come and see parts of the station that are not normally open to the public. Also see the star of the show at 9:55 am. It is train #4 the Southwest Chief. The members and volunteers of the American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation and the station caretakers look forward to seeing you.

Macon Women of Today Awards

Triplets were born at Baker Family Farms east of Atlanta, Missouri on April 29, 2013 to an eleven-year-old Simmental Cow named, "Lucky Me." The cow is owned by Aaron Baker and was a part of his 4-H and FFA project as a student. The farm is owned by Bob and Cathy Baker. Researchers at Oklahoma State University have found that 1 in 105k bovine pregnancies are triplets; 1 in 250 are twins. This is the farm's seventh set of multiples this year. The family is asked locals to help name the three heifers by commenting on their Facebook page. The family decided on the names of Betty Jo, Bobbie Jo and Billie Jo, from the show Petticoat Junction.

National Drug Take Back Results The Macon Police Department, Macon Municipal Utilities and Macon County Public Water Supply District/ Missouri Rural Water Association participated in the Sixth Annual National Drug Take Back Event organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on Saturday, April 27, 2013. This was the fourth event held in

­ acon. According to the Macon Police M Department, "We collected 59.5 pounds of unwanted medications for disposal. The next event will be held sometime this Fall. If someone has a large amount of medications they want to get rid of before then, they may call the Macon Police Department at 660-385-2195 to schedule a drop-off appointment.

No questions asked." A total of 269.5 pounds of medication has been collected from Macon residents since beginning the program in October 2011. The purpose of the program is to help prevent accidental drug overdose and misuse/ abuse as well as offering a safe way to dispose of medications to avoid contamination to the community's water supply.

Piano recital

Piano students of Janis Mitten performed in a recital on Saturday afternoon, April 27th at Illinois Bend Church. L to R: Libby Reinsch, Ellie Reinsch, Audrey Belfield, Janis Mitten, Addison Belfield, Chloe Ebeling, Sheridyn Bealmer and Angeline Hansen. A nice crowd of family and friends enjoyed a reception hosted by Illinois Bend Sew n SOS afterwards.

The Macon Women of Today’s Woman of the Year held an awards banquet at Noland’s Catering in Macon. Outstanding New Member of the Year was awarded to Linda Truitt (right) and Stephanie Schneider (left) received the Outstanding New Member of the Year award. Macon WOT is a civic organization that supports local and national charitable causes through fundraising and volunteer efforts.
