2013 District Golf Tournament The 2013 District Golf Tournament took place at the Kirksville Country Club on April 29, 2013.

Placing #1 with a score of 81 was Grant Gregory of La Plata. There were an additional four more Macon County golfers who placed in the top 50, including Ben Bolden, Drew Magers, Andrew Perry, and Jake Hodges, all of La Plata. They placed 3rd in the District team standings.

National Train Day 2013

La Plata Amtrak will celebrate National Train Day on Saturday, May 11th. The station will be open from 9 to 3 that day with free coffee and donuts available in the morning, Amtrak Memorabilia Exhibits, Railroad Artwork, Operating Model railroads, Kids Train Cookie Decorating, ATCS monitor display and Q-n-A also a Possible motorcar Display. Come and see parts of the station that are not normally open to the public. Also see the star of the show at 9:55 am. It is train #4 the Southwest Chief. The members and volunteers of the American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation and the station caretakers look forward to seeing you.

Macon Women of Today Awards

Triplets were born at Baker Family Farms east of Atlanta, Missouri on April 29, 2013 to an eleven-year-old Simmental Cow named, "Lucky Me." The cow is owned by Aaron Baker and was a part of his 4-H and FFA project as a student. The farm is owned by Bob and Cathy Baker. Researchers at Oklahoma State University have found that 1 in 105k bovine pregnancies are triplets; 1 in 250 are twins. This is the farm's seventh set of multiples this year. The family is asked locals to help name the three heifers by commenting on their Facebook page. The family decided on the names of Betty Jo, Bobbie Jo and Billie Jo, from the show Petticoat Junction.

National Drug Take Back Results The Macon Police Department, Macon Municipal Utilities and Macon County Public Water Supply District/ Missouri Rural Water Association participated in the Sixth Annual National Drug Take Back Event organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on Saturday, April 27, 2013. This was the fourth event held in

­ acon. According to the Macon Police M Department, "We collected 59.5 pounds of unwanted medications for disposal.

The next event will be held sometime this Fall. If someone has a large amount of medications they want to get rid of before then, they may call the Macon Police Department at 660-385-2195 to schedule a drop-off appointment.

No questions asked." A total of 269.5 pounds of medication has been collected from Macon residents since beginning the program in October 2011. The purpose of the program is to help prevent accidental drug overdose and misuse/ abuse as well as offering a safe way to dispose of medications to avoid contamination to the community's water supply.

LOCAL NEWS 2012 Sportsmanship Winners

The Brashear Lady Tigers were named the 2012 Sportsmanship Winners at the recent High School Holiday Hoops on the campus of North Central Missouri College in Trenton. Hosted by the North Central Missouri ­College Foundation, Holiday Hoops is now the largest high school holiday basketball program in the entire state. The Lady Tigers were chosen from among 45 girls teams participating in the 91 team event. Pictured with the Lady Tigers are Coach Justine Bane and Holiday Hoops committee members Ron Dougan and Steve Perry. The award was presented on Monday night at the school annual awards banquet in Brashear.

Missouri Highway Patrol On ATV Safety And Regulations

Whether it is a cold, winter day after a fresh snowfall or a warm, lazy summer day, riding your all-terrain vehicle (ATV) can be both a fun and relaxing experience.

Unfortunately, this mode of transportation has resulted in tragic crashes, which have led to needless deaths and injuries. Preliminary statistics indicate that in 2012, 211 ATV riders were injured and eight killed in Missouri traffic crashes involving an ATV. During that same year, 11 individuals lost their lives in ATV crashes on private property and 121 were injured.

The fact is many ATV users don’t consider the dangers or understand the legalities of speeding down a rural highway, crossing a creek, or enjoying the scenery as they travel on or near a set of railroad tracks. So, let’s examine some of the regulations that apply to both the legal and safe use of an ATV. First, within 30 days of purchasing an ATV, you must apply for a certificate of ownership. The issued decal must be affixed to the right front fork or frame of the vehicle, where it is clearly visible.

Have you ever observed

a teen operating an ATV on a highway or a county road and wondered if it was legal? Well, our statutes state no person shall operate an ATV upon the highways unless the vehicle is owned and operated by the government for official use, or operated for agricultural purposes between the hours of sunrise and sunset. Handicapped individuals may occasionally operate an ATV on secondary roads and governmental bodies may also issue permits to licensed drivers for special use within city limits or on a county road. However, the operator must have a valid driver’s license and shall operate the ATV at speeds less than 30 miles per hour.

Please keep in mind that the term “highway” applies to any road open to the public, including those that are dirt or graveled. You should be aware that the property on either side of the road, which is owned

by MoDOT and commonly referred to as the right-ofway, also is considered to be part of the highway.

The law requires ATV operators to also have permission from the property owner, if operating an ATV on their land, and that the operator stop and identify him or herself if requested by the landowner. The operator must also remove their ATV from the property at the owner’s request.

If you desire to ride along and across streams, it must

be done either on your property or within streams where the landowner has granted you permission.

Railroad tracks and the maintained property on either side of the tracks is owned by the railroad and it is neither safe nor legal to ever operate an ATV on that property.

Missouri law also states that with the exception of private property owned by the operator’s parents or guardian, no person under the age of 16 shall operate an ATV within this state unless he or she is accompanied by or under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian, or is with an adult who is authorized by the parent or guardian. It is also a violation to operate an ATV in a careless and imprudent manner so as to endanger the person or property owner, while under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substance, with a passenger unless

for ­ agricultural purposes, or violate any of the other rules of the road.

Safety equipment starts with a helmet and it is required for all ATV users under 18 years of age.

Other required items when operating an ATV on a highway include a lighted headlamp and tail lamp, a slow moving equipment emblem mounted on the rear of the ATV, and a bicycle flag attached to the rear of the ATV that extends at least seven feet above the ground.

Every year, the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigates far too many serious ATV crashes. First, make sure the ATV is the right size for the operator. Secondly, the Patrol encourages all ATV users to attend a certified safety course. Finally, keep in mind that the laws regarding ATV use are in place to keep everyone safe and should be strictly adhered to.

Atlanta Community Club Meeting Members of the Atlanta Community Club met April 22nd with four members present. A carry-in meal was served at noon, followed by a short business meeting. Regular reports were heard and approved. A discussion was

held concerning upcoming fundraisers. It was announced that the next meeting would be held on May 27th. Those present were Kathy Baker, Betty Baker, Deanna Nichols and Lila Wiggans.

Obituaries Monell Koger

Monell Koger, 71, of Elmer, Missouri passed away Thursday night, May 2, 2013 at her brother’s home in Kirksville, Missouri, after losing her battle with cancer.

Monell was born on April 15, 1942 in Kirksville, Missouri, the daughter of Bernice A. and Gladys (Bailey) Mock. She was united in marriage on June 26, 1963 in Elmer to Herman “Spud” Koger, who preceded her in death on June 24, 1994.

She was also preceded in death by her father on November 6, 1960, her mother on February 20, 2003 and her son, Kenneth Dale Koger on August 8, 1982.

Surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Orin and Mary Mock of Kirksville, Missouri; three nieces, Amy Karau, Matilda Small and Emily Chasteen; four great nieces and nephews, Zachary Small, Travis Small, Elizabeth Chasteen and Drew Schreiber; five cousins, John Mathis, Janey Whiteaker, Sandy Whitacre, Chris Meredith and Kay Marshall; other relatives and a host of friends.

Monell was a life-long resident of the Elmer Community and a graduate of the Elmer High School. She obtained a Masters Degree in Science Education from Truman State University in Kirksville and taught in the Callao and Atlanta schools before her retirement in 1994. Monell was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 13, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Elliott Funeral Home in Atlanta, Missouri with visitation beginning at 6:00 p.m. A family eugoly will be delivered by her cousin, John Mathis. Burial will be at a later date in the Bunce Cemetery, west of Elmer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Memory of Monell are suggested to Hospice Compassus, 707 E. Briggs Drive, Macon, MO 63552. Memorials may also be left at or mailed to Elliott Funeral Home, 103 E. Main Street, Atlanta, Missouri 63530.

Developing Successful Downtown Retail Presentation

Some changes might be on the horizon for some stores in downtown Macon. April 24, 2013 marked a visit from Sara Tetley. Sara is an architect at PGAV Destinations

who specializes in retail design. She has had nearly 20 years experience including special retail projects at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Along with PGAV Planners, Sara has

conducted several retail consultations for businesses in the participating DREAM communities.

She spent the day with a few downtown businesses, including Long Branch Embroidery, giving them one-on-one recommendations. In the afternoon, she gave a public presentation at Jaeger’s Coffee House called “Developing Successful Downtown Retail Presentation” describing techniques and strategies to convert visitors into loyal customers.

These ideas included appearances outside such as flowers, window design and interior display.

The DREAM Initiative is a partnership between

the Missouri Department of Economic Development, Missouri Development Finance Board and Missouri Housing Development Commission. It provides communities across the state with access to technical and financial assistance for downtown revitalization. Macon was designated a DREAM community in 2008 and work began in 2009 with a focus on building revitalization, streetscape enhancements, and improving the mix of uses within Downtown.

Judy Kay Brown Judy Kay Brown, 64, of Linwood, Kansas peacefully passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas.

Judy was born June 4, 1948 near La Plata, Missouri. She was the daughter of Robert E. and Eva M. (Billups) Pippin.

On February 26, 1967 she married Ronnie C. Brown.

She is survived by her husband Ronnie; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Stefanie Brown of Linwood, Kansas; one daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Jim Rinehart of Aurora, Colorado; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Virgil and Colleen Pippin of Elmer, Missouri, Glen and Sherry Pippin of La Plata, and Loren and Patsy Pippin of La Plata; four sisters, Stella Tuggle, Verna Buck, Peggy Thomas and husband Jerry, and Cora Voyles and husband Larry, all of La Plata; and three grandchildren, Hannah, Rebekah, and Steven, all of whom were the lights of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jimmy.

Judy was a 1966 graduate of La Plata High School. She resided in the Kansas City area most of her adult life. Judy was a member of the La Plata Baptist Church. She was a caring and loving woman who was loved in return by everyone she knew.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at the La Plata Baptist Church. Burial was in the La Plata Cemetery under the direction of Travis Funeral Chapel.

Friday afternoon, April 26th, at the rural Chariton County Fitzgerald Cemetery, members of The American Legion Bucklin Green Hills Post 57, Squadron 57 Sons of the American Legion, and soldiers of the Missouri Army National Guard had the honor to perform military rites for Marceline/Bynumville resident and United States Army Veteran William Gail Brewer. COMMENTARY Blonde But Blunt

Awww, the sweet sweet smells of Spring, the wonderful sounds of birds, the newly born calves and the faint noises of the lawnmowers and weed trimmers working on yards in the neighborhood. I love Spring.

Being able to visit the ballparks at any given night of the week, watching those little ones, who are just beginning to learn the game of the field, seeing them miss the bases and go back or listening to their coaches direction and just having that “what are you talking about” look on their face. Or seeing them catch a ball and get someone out at first base and then smiling from ear to ear because they know “they did it”. These are some of the little things we take for granted. I miss my kids playing ball, what I don’t miss is the extra laundry, the kids playing at different parks on the same night, arguing on where to eat on the way home or not getting to go to the lake the day of a game. I swear, I had a kid at the lake every day, just not all three at the same time, unless it was a weekend. Sammie and Skyler would of lived at the Santa Fe if they could of pitched a tent. And I didn’t mind, it was cheap family entertainment and good exercise. I thank the heavens for Linda Moore and Nancy Haley, Randy Bunch and Kerry Green, who seemed to be there everyday and watched over all the little ones and big ones in the water. I think the rule is, if they are under 12 they can’t be there without an adult, and even though mine were of age, you still worry about them. The caretakers can’t be baby sitters and Lord knows they don’t get paid enough anyway. I know I couldn’t deal with that many kids

JEFFCOAT everyday without losing my mind. But, they love the kids, enjoy the sun and became part of our summer family! Thank You!!

Hope to see you there!

Not only will the lake season begin Memorial Day weekend, so does camping weekend! Love camping! Wish they would put some camping spots at the Santa Fe! Two for One! But the Reservoir has some camping spots just east of town. I haven’t camped there yet, but they added a great shelter house and its not far from town, so you can still run in for some fishing worms or steaks for the grill! Summer is just beginning and I plan on having a great one this year! Hope your’s will be as well!

SHEPHERD’S CALL

by Dr. H. Wade Paris A Dirty Column Today was the first sunny day in ages, and I spent the day with my hands in the dirt. We are installing new shrubs at our house. Removing the old shrubs and preparing the beds was quite a job, but I loved it. There is still enough child in me to enjoy playing in the dirt and getting dirty.

I love the smell of dirt; it is quite aromatic. I love the feel of dirt; it has a texture all its own. The soil in our garden is rich. Former owners likely filled these beds with good soil, and it is still fertile.

As I scooped and moved the dirt with my hands, I was aware I was handling one of life’s basic substances. Our bodies are made from dirt. One day those bodies will return to dirt. Meanwhile, the dirt of our planet gives life to all. I have put my bushes in the ground; they will send roots down into the earth, and the dirt will give them life. These thoughts made playing in the dirt very meaningful for me.

There is one more truth

about soil that made my time meaningful. The dirt, the soil we have, is all there is. If your house is destroyed, you can make or buy another one. New houses are built all the time. If your car fails, you can go get another; new cars are being assembled every day. But you cannot make dirt. People come and go, but the soil we have is the same soil used by many generations; and what we have is all there is.

A friend of mine was trying to buy some land.

He asked the realtor, “Why is land so high?”

“Oh, that’s easy to answer”, the realtor drawled.

“Every day the world is filling up with more and more people. But there ain’t no more land. What’s here is all there is.”

Once again, a simple bit of earthy truth teaches us about our heavenly ­Father. He made the earth, He made the soil, and He made only so much. You and I might want Him to make more, but the Lord seems to be saying, “You have enough. Use it wisely.”

With Kevin Shoemaker Welcome back everyone. I hope everyone is having a wonderful start to their “Spring.” Well, that’s what the calendar says anyways. No matter the season, law enforcement officers continue to battle crime rain, snow, or shine. The “bad guys” don’t take breaks when it’s muddy or when there is two feet of snow on the ground, both of which we have experienced in the last two months. Blizzards and floods may stop some people from their daily routine, but not in law enforcement because crime never stops. The jail doesn’t close down. We still fight the daily battle. It may slow down from time to time, but crime still happens. In law enforcement some of us have a motto of “expect the worst but hope for the best” simply so we can be prepared the best we can with what resources we have. In time I hope to strengthen our resources and continue to upgrade/expand our technology so that we may be better equipped for the unexpected. I currently have 8 deputies (including myself) that cover 900 square miles day and night, all weekends/holidays, and yes inclement weather, 4 jailers who stand watch in the jail, answer the phone, and work the front desk, and also an administrative assistant to handle sex offender registration, an increasing number of CCW permits, civil process, and bookkeeping, all of them deserving a big “round of applause” for serving the county in those difficult conditions.Thank you staff!!!

As I mentioned earlier CCW permit applications have exploded in the last couple of months draining resources and putting time restraints on other matters. I’ve elected to start having CCW applicants and renewals call the Sheriff’s Office (660-385-2062) to schedule an appointment with Amber Wilhelm to apply for or renew your CCW. I know this might be a burden for some, but it would solve some common problems we’re seeing here lately such as extended waiting periods and paperwork confusion, with the end result hopefully improving overall office efficiency. There is also another news release on this matter. Please accept my apologies as this might be an inconvenience for some, but an improvement for all. I hope you can abide by this policy as it takes effect May 1st.

Update on the Jail Study – The consultant has gathered his required data and will have a full report completed by May 1st. Once the report is complete, we will once again meet with the commission and project design team to determine if a construction project will proceed. This study contains material such as county population data, inmate population data, population trends, crime trends, and also what it would take to not even build a jail and house all the inmates in another county. My May 2013 Sheriff’s Corner will have the details of the report.

Monday the family fathered for lunch at the home of Larry and Cora Voyles. Joining them were Stella Tuggle, Willie and Mary Tuggle, Virgil and Colleen Pippin, Glen and Sherry Pippin, Loren and Patsy Pippin, Nancy Haley, Verna Buck, Mike Buck, Lori Smith, Lisa McHenry, Tabitha Sawyer and Linda Moore. Also joining them after visitation were Billy Pippin, Steven McHenry, Gunner and Gage, Kevin and Tracey East, Eddie Buck and Barb Englehard. If I missed you, I apologize.

Thanks to June Magers, Susie Sees, Sandra Gramling and Evelyn Falls for serving lunch Tuesday at the La Plata Baptist Church. Judy brown passed away April 26, 2013 in the hospital. David and Patsy Eitel and Norma Grubbs recently spent a day touring Pella, Iowa. They saw the Sunken Gardens Park in the shape of a wooden shoe, the historical village, wind mills and tulips on every street. They toured the Red Rock Lake, Iowa’s largest lake.

Ending the day watching Kaleb Carroll of Plano, Iowa play baseball at Centerville, Iowa and visiting with the rest of the family.

La Plata FFA Receives Red Brand Donation

Aaron Thomas, FFA Reporter On April 30, the La Plata FFA received a generous donation through Red Brand’s Home Grown Project. The Home Grown Project is sponsored by Red Brand, a trusted fence and steel wire manufacturer. By partnering with the local MFA, Red Brand donated one dollar to the La Plata FFA for every roll of new Red Brand fence or wire ordered. Dave Smoot, La Plata MFA Manager, presented five FFA officers with a check for just under five hundred dollars. This investment and commitment made by the MFA and Red Brand Company to the La Plata FFA are hugely appreciated.

TOPS MO #877 Meet TOPS MO877 La Plata met Tuesday, April 31st at 6:00 p.m. in the La Plata Christian Church fellowship hall with four members weighing in.

Gail led the meeting. We opened with our TOPS and KOPS pledges. Roll call was “did you lose weight, did you journal

and did you eat a fruit or vegetable you ordinarily did not eat?”

Gail was best loser and also won TOPSi for the month of April.

We are making plans for our “spring workshop”, Saturday, June 1st at the La Plata First Baptist Church.

Our program was a

brief discussion about eating when not hungry.

This is a problem many have. TOPS mission is to support our members as they take and keep off pounds sensibly. We are here for each other.

Those attending were Dale Carr, Lawrence Rice, Jim Hill, Marvin Burkhardt, Grace Killen, Blanche Hoffman, Jack Weems, Helen Griswold, Dorothy Dee Daniel, Marilyn Stockmann, Loreta Wynne, Frank & Martha Mason, Mary Gertrude Edwards, Birdie Judd, and Isabel Hutcherson. This afternoon, Bill Bevan came out and read to the residents.

We loved having Vicki Reynolds and Cheryl

Waller here Monday morning. They sang for the residents and started the day off on a very sweet note! Holly and the residents played Bingo this afternoon. The grand prize winners were Glenn Wallace, Oreta Imler, and Nancy Hardy.

Silly Susan Lenon stopped by Tuesday morning. Her stories, jokes, and songs put everyone in a happy, happy mood. The Friendship Design class met this afternoon. They made decorative cup flowers filled with yummy candy.

Janet McCoy and the residents played Bingo Wednesday morning. The grand prize winners were Nancy Hardy, Bob Rhoten, and Oreta Imler. Pastor Delbert Earlywine, from the Clarence United Methodist Church, led Bible study after lunch. Scripture was read from John 13:31-35. The topic of study was “Love One Another Like I Love You”.

The residents were ready for Craft Time with Janice Wilson Thursday morning.

Since we’ve been blessed with lots of rain, they made the cutest little umbrellas to hang in their rooms. Mark and Holly, along with Dale Carr, Nancy Hardy, Gwen Jones, and Jack Weems, went to Lolli’s Exchange

in Macon this afternoon.

What a fun place to go! If you’re looking for something really different, this is the place!

Clark Dobbs, from the Macon First Baptist Church, led Bible study Friday morning. The study title was “Living in Holiness”. Scripture was read from Leviticus 18:1-5, 2026; 20:6-8. Clark told us that God sets us apart for holy living, so we should reject unbiblical aspects of our culture. Holly hosted Popcorn Bingo this afternoon. The grand prize winners were Isabel Hutcherson, Martha Mason, and Oreta Imler.

Saturday morning, Ronnie Shores visited with many of the residents and shared his cd’s with them.

Darrell McDowell hosted Movie Time this afternoon in the front tv room. They watched Forrest Gump.

Our Valentine Queen, Martha Mason, represented the Clarence Care Center at the A.D.A.M.S Queen Pageant in Hannibal, MO this afternoon. The pageant was held at Luther Manor.

Martha was accompanied by her husband, Frank, Holly Beall, and Stephanie Holder. Martha did an amazing job and we are so proud of her! Have a wonderful week!

La Plata Alumni Association To Meet

The La Plata High School Alumni Association will have their annual meeting this year on May 25, 2013. The doors will open at 6:00 pm for visiting with old and new friends, looking at year books and other memorabilia. There will be punch and cookies. At 8:00 we will have a short meeting and program with door prizes and more visiting. We will also be taking anyone’s comments on future dates and times. Williams’ Attend Reunion Veterans of World War Two are rare today. Our friend and neighbor, Frank Williams, is a veteran of that war and was able to attend the reunion of the veterans of the Navy Destroyer USS Hazelwood.

The reunion of the Navy Destroyer USS Hazelwood was in Newport, Rhode Island this year. Every other year veterans who have ever served on this ship meet on the date the ship was attacked by a kamikaze plane during World War Two on April 29th 1945. Of the many sailors at the reunion only three of the survivors of this attack were present. Frank Williams was interviewed by a television station out of Providence, Rhode Island to relate his memories of the attack. He reported 77 men died as a result of the kamikaze attack with over 100 injured. Frank was among the injured.

Frank and his wife Marilyn, their son Keith Williams and grandson Jordan Williams traveled to Rhode Island recently for the reunion of Frank’s shipmates.

A replica of the Destroyer USS Hazelwood was constructed by the son of one of the survivors and donated by the family to the Battleship Cove Marine Museum in Newport, R. I. The next reunion is scheduled to be in Norfolk, Virginia on April 29th, 2015.

P.S. The Williams family was surprised when another grandson Jared Williams, a pilot for Southwest Airlines, met them at the airport before they boarded their plane headed home.

A wonderful week end for this Navy vet and his family.

Citizen’s Appreciation Dinner The ladies of the Civic Club hosted the appreciation dinner April 25th, in the community building. Forty five guests registered for the door prize which was awarded at noon. The prize was donated this month by Peggy Finney and won by Marj King.

There will be no Citizen’s Appreciation Dinners until fall. Watch for the posters inviting you to this complimentary dinner the fourth Thursday in September.

Look Both Ways We have big orange highway signs all along Highway 129, which is also our Main Street, cautioning us to drive carefully as the State Highway Department is coming through.

A resurfacing of the highway from the south of town clear up to New Boston is underway as soon as the weather cooperates. We will have trucks and workers so folks let’s look both ways before we start uptown. I and my old golf cart will sure give them the right of way!

Thanks for all you do, Doris It just keeps getting better. Mark Williams is all set for his head to be shaved and his bountiful mustache will get the razor as well. The $3,000.00 to get this done is in the bank: a pair of industrial strength clippers have been ordered. Mark has sure created a lot of interest (as well as funds) for the Spark UpThe Park effort.

With the money coming in for new equipment Tammy and Darla put out the call for volunteers. The large old swing set needed to be moved to make room for the new merry go round and springy horses. It took a group of willing workers just one evening to complete this task. A tip of our old cap to David Jenkins, Terry Epperly, James Lee Jenkins, bob and Lori Davis, Don Noah, Rick and Brooke Standley, Greg Noah and Jim Finney for a job well done.

The little play fort was moved also. It will be disposed of as a new play house will be constructed where the fort was. Anyone interested in the little play fort may call 660-695-3600.

Odd’s -n- End’s It was time to take a break: sit in the swing and enjoy the birds. On May first Emily Switzer and Beverly Riley told me the wrens have returned to their houses. Beverly said the Baltimore Orioles have come to her grape jelly feeder already.

I listened on this sunny May Day afternoon and sure enough our Wren was there inspecting our houses. It looks as if she has chosen the one in the old maple by the little hen house. So far this spring we have four pair of Purple Martins, one pair of Cardinals and more English Sparrows than the law allows. I remember the Good Book tells us our Lord watches out for the sparrows so therefore I won’t fuss about them.

The offer of winter onion starts proved to be a popular item. Our little patch is thinned for now but we will hope to have extras again next year.

Big news for this week for our area is Prom. South Shelby held its prom on Saturday night April 27th.

The theme of this year’s prom was “A Night In Paris.” The gymnasium was beautifully decorated and the Grand March was held at 7 pm in the middle school gym. Taylor Neely was Queen and Tyler Foster was King of the prom. The traditional after prom party was sponsored

by P.R.I.D.E. The beautiful warm weather this week has brought everyone out to work in their yards. Seems everyone is mowing and cleaning up all the debris left behind by winter. My friend Carolyn Hill said she has worked in her yard all week, and still had more to do. I know what she meant by that.

I took my dog Cody walking last Thursday and we visited some of the new neighbors in our neighborhood. We meet Brenda Sizemore who is a really nice lady. She, her husband and her three dogs are now in the house vacated by Sabrina and Chris Weaver last fall. We really miss them and their children but Sizemores are a great addition to the neighborhood. Cody

really liked them because they have three dogs about his size.

We also visited with Kevin and Amber Timbrook and their four children. They bought the large house at the end of my street. I had been in the house 30 years ago when Thurmans lived there.

Back then the house was wallpapered and had heavy drapes in the windows.

Well not anymore. The house is painted in light and bright colors and the many windows let in lots of light. I am so happy to see a family living in this beautiful home and it is again being loved and cared for.

My good news is my patio is finished.

The carpenter came last Thursday and finished everything. It is now a beautiful work of art. After I got off work Saturday I went to my daughter Bonnie’s house in Atlanta and we went to Kirksville in her SUV. At Home Depot I bought my new patio set. I got a loveseat, chair, footstool, and coffee table. It is in a beautiful shade of dark red. When Bonnie, her husband John and I got home we unloaded the big boxes in the family room and they

stayed and visited awhile.

After Bonnie and John left I was so lucky because my Grandson Derek put all four pieces together.

He looked over the instructions and went right to work and everything turned out beautiful. I must say I hate to put stuff like this together and it still wouldn’t be done if I had to do it. Sunday after church I came home and decorated my new back patio. If you come to Clarence stop by and take a look. Thank you so much to Bonnie, John, and Derek for all you hard work on this project.

Most of all thank you to my husband Kenny for surviving all of this ordeal.

Twenty of us went to the Clarence Senior Citizens tonight to play cards. As always we had a wonderful time.

Events coming up in Clarence are. The City Wide Garage Sale on May 11th, Clarence Elementary Track and Field Day will be Thursday May 16th beginning at 9am and Clarence Elementary Spelling Bee will be Friday, May 17th at 1 pm.

Macon Police Department Report On 04/18/13 at approximately 12:10am, a victim reported to the Macon Police Department atheft had just occurred in the 100 block of Second Street. The victim stated a neighbor alerted them when they saw a vehicle stop and load an item from the victim’s property. The victim stated an air compressor was missing from the property. A description of the vehicle was obtained from the witness. Officers canvassed the area and a short time later located a vehicle matching the description at a business in the 800 block of South Missouri Street. Police observed an air compressor contained in the vehicle in plain view and then made contact with the driver. As a result, police arrested a 48-year old white male of Sullivan (MO) for stealing and trespassing. The suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department for processing and was later released pending a municipal court date after posting the required bond.

On 04/18/2013 at approximately 8:40pm, a victim contacted the Macon Police Department reporting their residence had been burglarized between the hours of approximately 8:30am and 8:30pm on the same date. The victim reported returning home to find a damaged exterior door and items missing from the residence. Items stolen include a flat screen television set and a gaming system, valued at approximately $500.00. Officers observed damage to the property, however an estimate of the damage was not available at the time of the report. This case remains under investigation at this time.

On 04/19/2013 at approximately 10:10am, a victim reported a theft had occurred during the overnight hours in the 200 block of Daugherty Street.

It was reported the victim was missing a goose-neck hitch and bracket valued at approximately $730.00.

This case is currently under investigation by the Macon Police Department.

On 04/20/2013 at approximately 8:30pm, a Macon Police Officer

made enforcement contact with a vehicle at the intersection of Vine and Rubey Streets. As a result of the contact, police arrested a 32-year old white female of Shelbyville for failure to stop at a stop sign and driving while license suspended. The suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department for processing and was later released pending a municipal court date after posting the required bond.

On 04/20/2013 at approximately 11:05pm, Macon Police made enforcement contact with a vehicle on Missouri near South Rollins Street. As a result of the contact, police arrested a 36-year old white female of Macon for driving while license suspended and failure to provide proof of insurance.

The suspect was processed at the Macon Police Department and later released pending a municipal court

date.

On 04/21/2013 at approximately 3:45 am, a Macon Police Officer made enforcement contact with a vehicle in the 1200 block of North Missouri Street.

During the contact, consent to search the vehicle was given. As a result, police arrested a 45-year old white male of Kirksville on multiple violations including failure to register motor vehicle, failure to provide proof of insurance, possession of under 35 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of controlled substance (meth). The suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department for processing and was later taken to the Macon County Jail pending formal charges. Charges were later filed and bond was set at $45,000.00 cash only. The suspect remains in custody at this time.

We end April with 30’s and 40’s for morning temps. We received 5/10 of an inch of rain. Farmers are anxious to plant and get in the fields. Weather is quite changeable as usual. Miss Jenny Wren has arrived and is singing.

We have two new puppies, Polly and Patched to join our farm family. They join George, Mattie, Mollie and Mighty, the cats and Henny Penny, our one lone chicken left from the mountain lion eating all the rest of the flock.

Jeremy Jarman visited Mary and Roger Jarman on Sunday.

Gail, Lynete, Logan and Colton Curtis, Linda and Gary Pyle, Rich and Sharron Burns attended the La Plata Drama Club’s presentation of “Diamonds in the Rough”, “Then There was One” and “Then There Was One, Too.” What a nice presentation and fun too.

“Congrats” are extended to Lana and Mike Daniels who visited baby Eleanor Elizabeth Daniels in Kansas City on Tuesday.

Compassion Center and Macon County Ministries

By Sharon Coram, Home Press staff With the Assistance of Linda Ellis, President of Macon County Ministries Linda Ellis, President of the Macon County Ministries (MCM), is quite excited about the upcoming new building, which will house the Compassion Center, including the monthly food pantry as well as the emergency food pantry.

The building was formerly the Macon County Barn. It is located just south of Loch Haven on Sunset Hills Drive. Linda stressed that the building was purchased with money collected by the Martha McDowell Compassion Center Committee. The donations have been held in an account waiting until the appropriate property could be found. This property seems to be just what was needed. After a thorough cleaning, concrete work on doorways, the addition of a handicap bathroom, a new heating and cooling system for the west side section of the building and installation of walk in freezer/coolers it should be ready to serve the food pantry patrons in the new location. A ConAgra grant is providing the heating/cooling/refrigeration work.

The emergency food pantry (EFP) is for those in urgent situations and is available 4 times a year. There is no income requirement, and is supported by local donations.

Linda Truitt is the Director of the EFP and she enlists many volunteers in order to have the pantry open 5 days a week. Their hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10:00-12:00

and Tuesday Thursday 1:00-3:00. Truitt would welcome new volunteers, and the job does not include heaving lifting or a lot of standing.

The monthly food pantry is to supplement food, not to re-supply a cupboard. Its provisions come from the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri in Columbia.

Businesses, gardeners and grocers supply the Food Bank, and the USDA also donates. The monthly food bank relies on 50 to 60 volunteers to serve about 350 families; over 1000 people in one day. They are able to fill a cart in two minutes. Linda Ellis says the volunteers are so synchronized and smooth it looks like a “food ballet”.

Many more volunteers are used during the month to set up this one-day operation. To receive assistance from the monthly food bank, residents must meet income requirements and can simply go in on distribution day to apply. It occurs on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Linda explained that over 50% of those served are oneperson families, usually the elderly. She also stated that many of the young families she sees have two or three jobs and still have trouble making ends meet.

Other things that Macon County Ministries are involved with is the utility support program which will help residents with their utility bill one time per year; Share the Harvest, in which hunters donate venison, and is

processed and ground at Special D’s and handed out in one-pound packages at the EFP. In cooperation with the Macon Police Department, there is a program for transients and emergencies.

By seeking this emergency assistance, persons may be given a voucher for gas money if stranded, a meal voucher from C&R, a hotel room for the night, or other types of assistance depending on the situation, Helping Hands at Christmas is a program that collects monetary donations. The schools and family services are contacted for families needing help. Deb Hartung, Board Member, finds sponsors for these families through churches and organizations. The remainder is taken shopping for shoes, socks, underwear, jeans, shirts, and possibly a toy for their child. Linda stated that Deb is a very frugal shopper. Hartung and Sandy Coons also coordinate the Santa Shop that is set up in the Lutheran Church the first of December. It is stocked by donated toys and parents in need can come and shop for their children.

The original proposed location for MCM was 207 Vine Street. Martha McDowell and her committee planned to use it for panty purposes. But when it was decided that the “old Casey’s” could not accommodate both pantries, the Board started to look for a larger property.

Dede Spidle explains how recycling can help our community.

Earth Day was April 22 and there was public invite forum held at Macon High School called “Today’s Recycling in Macon County.” Dede Spidle of Macon Diversified Industries conducted the forum in effort to enlighten the public about today’s world of recycling and the lifestyle of in-home recyclers. Also, she explained

the “how and why” the non-profit Macon County Sheltered Workshop is affected by this program.

Topics of recycling included metals, paper, textiles and plastics. Also included were the types of materials they will accept and how it is recycled, from selling to a scrap dealer or reselling items at Timeless Treasure Thrift

Store.

Dede also announced a pilot testing program for curbside recycling, which includes 250 households in Macon to “test the waters” and see how it goes.

They are working with Advanced Disposal on the pilot program and will be collecting data over the next two months. Should the test prove positive, making this service available in Macon County might be available in the near future. Dede stressed that they do not want to make this mandatory as they do in some communities. She would like to see it stay voluntary because they don’t want it to become a chore, but rather something people want to do.

The forum was in cooperation with the Macon Jaycees, Advanced Disposal, and Macon County Economic Development.

Fundraising efforts were provided by the Macon Jaycees concession stand.

Funds went to the Macon County Sheltered Workshop.

The Bucklin American Legion Auxiliary ladies are making Lap Robes for local area veterans.

Shirlene Fitzgerald is holding one of the ropes she made. Several auxiliary ladies meet every week to sew and stitch the lap robes together. As to date,

they have donated 8 lap robes and 1 wheel chair apron. Russell Davolt was one of the veterans that received a robe in February and he was truly grateful to get it. The auxiliary’s goal is to make several more to give to deserving veterans in nursing homes.

The Atlanta Hornets hosted Cairo on Monday, April 29th and ended the game early with a loss in 5 innings to the Bearcats 1-11. Collan Thrasher was the losing pitcher, throwing 3 innings, allowing 6 runs, 3 hits, 4 bases on balls, one homerun and 2 strikeouts. Garrett West finished the game throwing 1 inning, allowing 5 runs, 5 hits, 2

bases on balls and 2 strikeouts.

The Josephine Garlock Morrow Tent #23 of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 met April 23 at the Brookfield Public Library, with 11 members and two guests present.

Vice-President Gail Shoush and Acting Chaplain Ruth Masten opened the meeting. Patriotic Instructor Linda Haley led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Courtesy Chair Catherine Llewellyn reported on get well cards and birthday cards sent to members.

Linda Haley and Ruth Masten reported on plans for the DUV State Convention to be held in Macon June 8-9. The Saturday luncheon will be held at the Macon County Historical Society Museum. Dennis Daniels of Kirksville will be the speaker.

The Saturday evening program will be presented by Tom Rafiner, who has recently published a Civil War history of Cass County, Missouri “Caught Between Three Fires”, Cass County, MO Chaos and Order #11, 1860-1865. Sunday, Jane Hays will serve high tea at the Granddaughters luncheon. Each of these programs is open to the public.

Linda Haley presented a program on the Medal of Honor. President Harry S Truman said, “I would much rather have that medal around my neck than to be President of the United States,” when he presented the Medal of Honor to 15 World War II serviceman on October 12, 1945. Only 3,456 medals have been awarded since the beginning of the Civil War. Sen. Grimes of Iowa introduced a bill in Congress in 1861 to allow President Lincoln to authorize 200 Navy Medals of Honor.

A year later, an Army Medal of Honor

was introduced.

Over the years, the Medals were given for less than heroic deeds. It was not until 1917 that a review was made of all the medals given. Many were rescinded. By 1918, a congressional act was passed, affirming the Medal of Honor be presented to a person who “distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity” in an armed conflict with the enemy.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur received the medal in WWII, as did his father, 1st Lt. Arthur MacArthur, Jr., during the Civil War. Theodore Roosevelt received the medal for the Spanish-American War and his son, Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. received his as a result of WWII. About 80 recipients are still living.

George Washington has never been awarded the Medal of Honor. The VFW passed a resolution in 2009 calling for “Congress to award the Medal of Honor posthumously to Gen. George Washington.”

The Confederacy had no medal for bravery during the Civil War, however, the Sons of Confederate Veterans created a Confederate Medal of Honor in 1962.
