Miss Macon County Contestants Needed The 2013 Miss Macon County Pageant will be held Sunday, July 7, 2013.

All young women between the ages of 17 and 22 as of September 1, 2013 are eligible to compete for the title of 2013 Miss Macon County. The winner will receive a $500 scholarship from the Macon County Town & Country Fair as well as other cash and prizes.

The contestants must be residents of or attend school in Macon County. Contestants of the Miss Macon County Pageant must compete in the areas of interview, informal modeling, talent/speech,

formal wear, and public speaking. Entry forms may be picked up at either the office of Macon Co. Title & Escrow Services (1707 Prospect Dr.) or the Macon County Extension Office (514 E Briggs Drive, Ste D). Entries must be returned along with a $25.00 non-refundable entry fee to either location no later than June 10th, 2013.

Macon Women of Today and the Macon County Town & Country Fair.

Macon Women of Today is a chapter of the United States Women of Today, which was established in 1985. The organization’s members initiate local community development projects, raise money and resources for local organizations, and participate in personal development activities and state and national partnerships. Currently, more than 3,600 women are members in 16 states across the nation.

BULLDOGS CAPTURE DISTRICT TITLE Joslyn West, who graduated from Macon High School in 2008, recently graduated from Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. Joslyn received her Bachelor of Music Education degree on May 11, 2013. Attending the ceremony were her parents, Sharon and Shon Coram of Macon; Charles and Elaine West of Moberly, and Matthew Lay of Macon. Also in attendance were Joslyn’s aunt, Cheryl Baryo, and great-aunt, Joanne Higgins, both of Southeast Michigan who traveled by train to La Plata, Missouri.

Prior to graduating, Miss West received and accepted a job offer as the Music Teacher and Band Director of Pre-K through 12th grade at Southwest R-1 in Ludlow, Missouri, which is southwest of Chillicothe, Missouri. She will be relocating to Chillicothe this summer to begin her new career in August.

The La Plata Bulldogs captured the District Championship Title Tuesday evening, May 14, 2013 at the La Plata Sports Complex when the 3rd seeded team faced the 5th seeded team (Marion County) in the first place game.

The Bulldogs won the game 13-1 after 5 innings and will move on to Sectional Play on Monday, May 20th.

The food was a struggle to get used to. Caleb said he tried to fix things that he liked to eat. He explained that pork there is not good.

It usually consists of a half inch of fat and a half inch of skin and the hair is still on it. He said he would eat chicken all of the time if he had meat. But, they would also eat spaghetti.

He said when he would fix it, everyone would ask him, “Where is the rice?”

He would say, “We are having spaghetti.” And the reply would be, “Yeah, but where is the rice?” He laughed and told me that now he has to eat rice with spaghetti and with everything else too, no matter what it is! “Breakfast, lunch or dinner, you always have rice.”

Most of the kids do not have the luxury of three meals a day and usually have one meal a day and there is not much variety.

The food they eat is to

sustain themselves. Many of the kids Caleb and his group fed daily were very concerned about what they would eat or even when they might eat again after Caleb came back to the States. “For them, even if they just have rice they are fine with that, but for them, there are times they don’t even have rice. That was one of the hardest parts of leaving. I worry about them all of the time.”

The mission Caleb took was in order to introduce people to Jesus. But, how does one start?

“When we first got there, it was awesome.

God just opened up doors!

For me, I had wanted to start a youth Bible study.

It was my big vision to start off. In order to do that, I had to meet youth.

So, I would walk to the market, go to the computer shop and just try to meet some of the youth. There was this kid named James.

He was the first one that I met that spoke pretty decent English. He ended up inviting me to the river with him one day. I really didn’t know what that looked like so I went with the group and we get there and they are all drinking and smoking. For me, that was perfectly okay because I know that is my purpose in being there. When Jesus came, He came to save the lost. It’s not the well who needs to be healed, it’s the sick.” (to be continued)

Obituaries

Bryan Leath Jr. Bryan Leath Jr., 89, formerly of Columbia, MO died on May 14, 2013 in Fort Worth, Texas, where he had moved to be near family.

Funeral service will be held on Monday May 20, 2013 at 1pm at The First Christian church in Columbia, MO. Visitation will be held at the church from 11 am to 1 pm. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens cemetery in Macon, MO at 4 pm.

Bryan was born on April 6, 1924 in Macon, MO to the late Bryan Leath Sr. and Fern Cox Leath.

On December 25, 1942 he married his high school sweetheart, Dortheda (Dottie) Simons, who preceded him in death in 2011. They began dancing together during their courtship and continued during their 68 year marriage.

Following graduation from high school, Bryan proudly served in the Army during World War II. In 1980 he retired from General Telephone/Verizon where he worked for 33 years in multiple cities in Iowa and Columbia, MO. Bryan was a member of First Christian Church in Columbia, MO. He was also a member of The Lions Club for many years, as well as holding the office of president. He was an accomplished woodworker, taking great delight in creating beautiful gifts for his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Leath, Grapevine, TX; son Richard (Kristy) Leath, Fort Worth, TX; son in law Ron Elliott, Vonore, TN; grandchildren Lori Jarvis, Eric Elliott, Chad Leath and Amber Leath, 7 great-grand-children, and brother, Robert Leath of Troy, OH. He was predeceased by his wife, Dottie Leath, daughters Cheryl Leath and Judy Elliott and brother Raymond Leath.

Bryan’s welcoming spirit and compassionate heart have influenced family and friends to follow his example of reaching out to those in need, contributing to community development through volunteer work and devotion to country. Always ready to lend a hand, serve a meal, share ideas, and offer advice as a kind-hearted listener, he was loved, and is missed by his family, as well as many friends, co-workers and neighbors. He was proud of his family, and especially loved welcoming new members. His enduring lessons to others includes to love with abandon (especially his wife and family), never shirk responsibility, enjoy every minute of life (like he did on the golf course), and if that’s not sweet enough for you, you can always put some sugar on it.

Charles “Charlie” G. Walls

Jackie D. Ehly, 49, of Macon, MO, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013, at her home in Macon.

Jackie was born on June 3, 1963, in Hannibal, MO, the daughter of Harold and Judy (Huff) Wilt.

She was united in marriage to Jim Ehly in Macon on December 31, 1986. Jackie graduated from the Moberly Area Community College Nursing Program and later from the Sinclair Nursing Program with the University in Columbia, MO. She enjoyed helping children and worked as a nurse in the Pediatric I.C.U. for the University Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Columbia for thirteen years.

Jackie was a member of Family Life Fellowship Church in Moberly and enjoyed horses, camping, family vacations, cooking, sewing, her pets, and especially spending time with her family and friends.

Jackie is survived by her husband, Jim Ehly of Macon, her parents, Harold and Judy Wilt of Aransas Pass, TX, one son, Andrew Ehly of St. Louis, MO, three step-daughters, Angie Lewis and her husband Bobby of Macon, Amy Banning and her husband Travis of Ashland, MO, and Leslie Head and her husband Scott of Moberly, MO, nine grandchildren, Chase, Cole, Cash, Claire, Tyler, Allee, Brennan, Cael, and Brooks, two brothers, Donald Wilt and his wife Rebecca of Rio-Hondo, TX, and Michael Wilt of Aransas Pass, TX, and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Friday, May 17, 2013, at the Family Life Fellowship Church in Moberly. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Macon. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Thursday evening, at the Hutton & McElwain Funeral Home in Macon.

Charles “Charlie” G. Walls, 83, passed away April 27, 2013. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Walls, in 1983; brother, Paul; and sister, Fern Rice. He is survived by his son, Charles (Dixie) Walls; grandchildren, Spree and Tyler Walls; longtime companion, Sue Owens; and several nieces and nephews. Charlie served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for CF & I as an electrician, and retired after 35 years of service. However, in his heart home was always in Ethel, Missouri, where he was born. Viewing will be 3-6 p.m., Wednesday, at TG McCarthy Funeral Home. Home Circle Club Home Circle Club met May 16 in the home Jackie th

Eitel. Club opened with the Lords Prayer. Roll call was : “What I Did for Mother’s Day”.

Nancy Belfield presided at a short business meeting.

There was discussion concerning a Queen candidate for Macon Electric August meeting. Becky Mohan will find a suitable candidate.

Jackie presented an interesting bit of history. She named past Presidents and asked the group top name the wife of that President.

The afternoon was spent visiting and catch king up on news. Linda had an update on the condition of Tom Durham who is critically ill.

Jackie served a delicious dessert of Zucchini cake with fruit.

Nancy Belfield will be the June hostess. The date has been changed to June 13th instead of the regular time.

Thank You to my family, Church family and friends who certainly made my 80th birthday quite memborble. Such beautiful cards, kind words and gifts were really appreciated. You’re all so very special and a great blessing. Thanks doesn’t seem sufficient, but T H A N K S. Rilletta Brokaw

Helen Lucille Lawson Helen Lucille Lawson, age 95 of Novinger, Missouri, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2013 at the Kirksville Manor Care Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

Born November 16, 1917 in North Salem, Missouri, she was the daughter of John and Stella (Peavler) Baker who preceded her in death.

Also preceding her in death were her husband, Duane Lawson, one sister, one brother, and one grandson, Dale McGee. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Rhett and Wilma Lawson of Novinger, Missouri; one daughter and son-in-law, Scarlett and John McGee; two grandchildren, Tyson and Brent Lawson; and two great grandchildren, Alex Lawson and Augustus Clevenger.

Helen requested to be cremated with no services.

Last week was a nightmare for me, long long week. I’ve had my son in the Emergency Room a few times the past couple of weeks, been diagnosed as a diabetic. Life changing for all of us. But, guess its good that we caught it when we did. Hopefully we can get it under control and he will feel better soon. Thanks to Randy and Sharon for helping out, my mind wasn’t where it was supposed to be, even when I was at the office. It’s great to have such good employees and good friends. We have an appointment next week to determine how extensive this is, whether we can treat it with diet and down the throat meds or if he will need insulin. I hope not. He’s 21 and I don’t see him obeying the doctor’s rules.

You will be seeing us walking more and bbq’n more, eating a lot of protein and cutting out the chips and candy bars. I’m gonna help him as much as possible and hopefully it will decrease some of that shadow of mine on the back side. LOL couldn’t hurt anyway huh? Hey, that wasn’t nice. I’m trying. The weather is great for exercising and Skyler has been umpiring at the north park in Kirksville so been driving him up there, as we don’t want him to drive until this is under control, running off the road twice is enough for me and the Adair County Ambulance staff. Thank you! Glad no one was hurt.

Went to Boonville last weekend as my boyfriend, Scott, pulls tractors and their first pull was Saturday. They did great, always do. I always enjoy watching the pulls and talking and visiting with the other wives and girlfriends of the pullers, its just one more group of people I consider family.

So I have my family, my

JEFFCOAT poker family, my camping and ATV riding family, my Home Press family and now the Tractor Pull family. I am blessed to have so many great friends to spend time with. Sometimes I don’t think I have the extra time, but seem to always find it. J Plan on camping this weekend for Memorial Day. Ready for some relaxation, sun and fun. Dad is going with us so will get to spend some quality time with him as well. Getting the camper ready is a job in itself, a second home, if you will, seems like packing and cleaning it is more than I do at home. But it’s worth it. A great time will be held by all.

Many years ago, two of my children and I were working in the garage.

I was helping my oldest son, Steve, with a science project. My six year old daughter, Susan, wanted to help. She kept saying, “I want to do something”.

At first, I ignored her.

Then, I tried to explain she was too small. Then, I promised she could do something later. Finally, I told her clearly, “You cannot help now. In a little while, I’ll have something for you to do; but if you ask me again, I’m going to send you to bed”. She moved over to the other side of the garage and busied herself with something else.

Later, her brother was driving some nails, and I said, “Leave the nails sticking out about a quarter of an inch”.

“What for?” he asked.

“Well,” I said, “Susan

wants to do something.

We’ll let her drive these nails the last quarter of an inch”. The words were not spoken to her, but she heard. She soon made her way over where we were.

She didn’t say a word, but she made sure I saw her.

She wanted me to know she was near when I was ready for her.

The Bible says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you”. That makes some sense, doesn’t it? When we need help, we often ask the nearest person. Urgency may compel us to do so. If we are far away from God, we may not even hear when He calls.

It is an extreme pleasure to serve the Lord. It is much akin to the child’s joy in helping his/her father. However, we must stay near to God, or we will miss opportunities for this kind of joy.

Black Diamond Jubilee Bill “Goofer” Atterberry entertained the large crowd with his songs and stories as always at the April 27th show. If you didn’t come, you missed a real professional in the music business. Bill graced the stage at the Ozark Opry for 38 years and also played at shows in Branson.

On May 11, J.R. Love from Wetnzville, Mo, took the stage at the Black Diamond Jubilee. J.R., the true showman that he is, had the crowd clapping and singing along on every song.

Emily Binder also entertained with her fiddle, playing some waltzes and hoedowns. Emily, only 15 years old, also sang a song.

She is from Salisbury.

Coming up on May 25th, the very talented Jennifer Potts will be here.

Jennifer is Bill’s girl—you know Bill, the lead guitar player. Johnny Kleine will also be in the show. Johnny, a senior in high school from Troy, Mo, is quite

an accomplished fiddle payer. You won’t want to miss this show. P.S. I almost forgot, with a little persuading he might sing one, too.

Our June 8th show highlights Miss Kathy Lynn from Smithville, Mo. She is a great singer so make your plans now to see her show. Mr. Gary Fagan, also an auctioneer, is a fine singer too.

On a sad note, we lost one of our show family in April. Jim Mitchell did the sound and just about everything else that needed done. He will be missed, so please keep his wife Jeannie and family in your thoughts and prayers.

FISHING FOR SUNFISH

Many of us cut our fishing teeth on sunfish and the truth is, they are still as much fun to catch now as they were back then.

The hottest action will occur during their spawning time around the time of the full moons of April through June, depending on your latitude. They will be simple to find and easy to catch. Just look for their plate-size beds up shallow along shorelines. Sometimes you will find a dozen beds in an area the size of a car.

They will fiercely guard their nest from any intruder, including your bait.

Wear polarized sunglasses so you can better see the nest. If bait fishing, small worms and crickets work well weighted with just a single split shot or nothing at all.

Soft plastic baits of all kinds are also productive. Cast past the nest and crawl your bait through it.

When you feel the fish move, set the hook.

Brunswick Budweiser Distributing Company Donates To American Legion Riders

The Brunswick, Missouri Budweiser Distributing Company donated two Budweiser framed prints for the American Legion Riders Legacy Scholarship Fund. The prints will be sold by the Missouri American Legion Riders motorcycle group at their July 2013 Convention, with all proceeds to the Legacy Fund. The American Legion Legacy Run, a motorcycle trek that crosses numerous states between Indianapolis and National Convention City pledges for the Legacy Run and collects

donations along the way.

The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund helps ensure higher education is a possibility for children whose parents lost their lives while on military duty since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Holly had some yummy ingredients ready for the residents to make Corn Dip during the Home Baked Love cooking class this afternoon. David Foster came out this evening and sang for the residents.

Holly called Bingo numbers Wednesday morning. The residents were more than happy to play their favorite game and win more prizes! The grand prize winners were Frank Mason, Darrell McDowell, and Martha Mason. Larry Mitchell, from the St.Patrick’s Catholic Church, led Bible study this afternoon. The lesson title

was “The Holy Spirit will be with you ‘til the end”.

Scripture was read from Acts 17:15; 22:18; John 16:12-15. Mark and Holly, along with Bob Rhoten, Dale Carr, Isabel Hutcherson, and Glenn Wallace went to Shelbina and visited the Shelbina Greenhouse this afternoon. Carla, Laura, and Staff were amazing and everything looked so beautiful! The residents picked out flowers for the window boxes back at the Care Center.

The Friendship Design class met Thursday morning. They made decorative purses to put on the tables for the Mother’s Day Luncheon on Friday. Also this morning, Stephanie Holder, Volunteer, and Holly planted flowers in the window boxes while many of the residents looked on and requested their favorite color of flower. Hello everyone and I do hope all of you mothers had a wonderful Mother’s Day. I had a great weekend. I have five children, 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, so it takes a while to get around to all of them.

Friday night my youngest daughter Bonnie took Kenny and me to AJ’S for supper. We were not only celebrating Mothers day but Kenny’s birthday is this Friday. We had a great evening and a wonderful supper.

I went to Sunday school and Church Sunday and it was a special service devoted to mothers. I gift of a beautiful wind chime was given to every mother. Bailey Knight gave a poem she had written about mothers and sang a special song. Rev. Hogan gave gifts to mothers depending on most children etc.

Mary Lee Gingrich had some of her family at church with her. She said most of her family were here to visit her. She told me that what she loved most was cooking dinner for her family. What a true meaning of mother.

Carolyn Hill spent Mother’s Day with her sister Marilyn. They had a good day together. Carolyn has spent the last two days cleaning her yard and planting garden. She does a lot of work in her yard and it truly is seen in her well kept lawn.

Theresa and John Cross had Teresa’s son and grandsons for Mother’s Day. Son Brian Collins and grandsons Quinton and Landon spent the day visiting.

she won at school. It was for completing addition level 1 to 10. I think both of the girls a looking forward to summer vacation.

Tonight as usual 20 of us seniors met at the Clarence Senior Center for weekly pitch. I had a good night and placed second on high score. Most important we all have a lot of fun.

I am off work tomorrow and I have a lot of work to do. Monday night the Macon Shelby Master Gardeners are meeting at my home for a carry in and a garden tour. I have a lot to do before then but Kenny is good help. I do love having people visit.

This week will be a lot of end of school programs. I will go to Callao next Wednesday night for granddaughter Katherine’s 8th grade graduation.

TOPS MO*&& La Plata met Tuesday, May 14th at 6:00 p.m. in the La Plata Christian Church in the fellowship hall with seven members weighing in.

Gail led the meeting. We opened with our TOPS and KOPS pledges and our own “buggy Song”, written and led by Karen C. Roll call was “did you lose weight, did you journal and what did you do for Mothers Day?” Gail was best TOPS loser and Karen C. was runner up. Barbara G was best KOPS loser with Veva as runner up.

The club received our new “TOPS real life” book, the hands-on pounds off guide for real people and real weight loss. The book contains worksheet tips sheets, activities a 28 day meal plan, diabetes and obesity information and chapter for KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). The club book is available for all members to share. There is something for everyone.

Our weekly challenge is to track our exercise.

Callao American Legion Post #360 And Auxiliary Callao American Legion 360 met May 9, 2013, with carry in meal.

Lauretta Yutz gave the prayer before the meal.

Hostesses for the evening were; Anna Mary Burk, Marg Lynch, Micki Albright and Shirley Kindle.

After the meal The Legion and Auxiliary divided into individual meetings.

Commander Bob Maddox called the Callao American Legion Post 360 meeting to order at 19:30, with the Pledge to the Flag. In Old Business; Discussion on changing District Lines and Boy State. Also handicap access to the legion building was discussed.

The Treasurer Report was read and approved. In New Business: Memorial Day Service was discussed.

Members need to be here by 9:15 on May 27, 2013.

There will be training on May 14 at 6:30 p.m. for the Memorial Service.

Nominating committee; Bernice Ford, Don Zeller and Duter. Discussed was: Sons of American Legion, and Flags in cemetery, and crosses that Auxiliary Linda Maddox , President, called the meeting to order with the Pledge to the Flag. The Secretary Report was read and approved followed by the Treasurer Report which was read and approved. CeCe Spink gave a report on the Poppy Project. The cans will placed at various places of business and members will be stationed at business with cans collecting money for the poppy project. The winners of the Poppy Poster Contest at the Callao School were 1st Grade Emely Dawson, and 4th Grade Preston Dawson.

Each student won $5.00.

The Poppy Story: From the battlefields of World War I, weary soldiers brought home the

memory of a barren landscape transformed by wild poppies, red as the blood that had soaked the soil, By that miracle of nature, the spirit of their lost comrades lived on.

The poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war, and represented the hope that none had died in vain. the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy has continued to bloom for the causalities of four wars, its petals of paper bound together for veterans by veterans, reminding America each year that the men and women who have served and died for their country deserve to be remembered.

Poppy Day has become a familiar tradition in almost every American community. This distribution of the bright red memorial flower to the public is oue of the oldest and most widely recognized programs of the American Legion Auxiliary.

This poppy as a memorial flower to the war dead, can be traced to a single individual, Miss Moina Michael. She was so moved

by Col. McCrae’s poem that she wrote a response: ...The blood of heroes never dies But lends a luster to the red of the flower that blooms above the dead in Flanders’ Fields.

The Memorial Day Services will be May 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Callao Legion Park with Kate Blaize Clark as the Speaker. Refreshments will be served in the Legion Hall afterwards with Auxiliary members furnishing cookies.

Pocket Flags are ready to present to National Guard as they will be deployed June 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the football stadium in Macon. They will actually depart on Sunday.

The ALR plan to escort them at least part of the way to St. Louis of KC, which ever they leave from.

Keegan Kindle, a junior criminal justice and psychology major from Macon, Missouri, was the recipient of The Libby Scholarship Award during the annual Honors Day Convocation held May 13, 2013 at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri.

Dozens of students were awarded for overall academic achievement,

outstanding performance within their major, academic competition and scholar-athlete rankings.

Many of the awards have been established by or in memory of Culver-Stockton alumni/ae. “This longstanding tradition of the college not only unites the student body as they honor their classmates and friends for achievements in the 2012 - 2013 academic year, but also represents the culmination of a year of hard work. I can think of no finer way to end another academic year on ‘the Hill’ than to pay tribute to members of our student body,” commented C-SC President Richard Valentine.

Members of the class of 2013 will receive their diplomas during the Commencement Ceremony to be held Saturday, May 18 at 9:30 a.m. on the campus of Culver-Stockton College.

by Doris Noah City Council Meets Bucklin City Council met May 8th, 2013 the meeting was called to order at 5:00 p m. April minutes were read and approved as read. Motion made and carried to approve and pay all bills.

City Attorney R. Cowherd came before the council and advised them of the bid process for the food stand. Mr. Cowherd also stated he would draw up a bid sheet for the paper.

During citizen’s participation Jerry Main came before the council and asked what it would take to get the city lake property back with his farm. Mayor Noah advised him that the city has a clear title to the lake property and the conservation department was looking to help the city with it. At this time Mayor Noah showed Mr. Main the deed to the lake where the city had purchased it.

Discussion was held concerning the sale of the 1996 Chevy truck owned by the city. Mayor Noah will be in touch with the Missouri Municipal League for advice on the sale of the truck.

Asphalt bids were received from APAC for 464 tons at $95.00 a ton, Bross for 494 ton at $94.50 and a Frech bid for $11.72 per square yard. Bid details were examined and motion was made and carried to accept APEC bid.

Motion was made and carried to establish an account at Regional Missouri Bank called the Water Replacement Extension.

Motion made and carried to purchase a power inverter.

Fire Chief Greg Noah came before the council and advised the fire department had received a 50/50 grant for up to $6,000.00.

The city will spend the $6,000.00 and then be reimbursed $3,000.00. Mo-

tion made and carried to go forward with this grant.

Motion to adjourn made and carried at 6:30 p m.

Remember May 26th-- Program and basket dinner at Wyandotte Church on Mesa Road northwest of Bucklin. The program starts at 11:00 a m with dinner to follow.

May 26th--- The annual business meeting of the South Swedish Covenant Church and Cemetery will be called to order at 3:00 p m. Persons interested in the welfare of the church and cemetery are invited to attend.

Annie’s Company Larry and Peggy Stuver from Aken, South Carolina were recent guests of Annie Jones. The Stuvers visited family and friends in the area with Annie’s house as home base.

They stayed several days.

Annie’s brother Loren Thompson came over from New Cambria for the day recently as well.

CWF Meets President Judy Bakke called the monthly CWF meeting to order with 11 members and 3 guests responding to roll call.

Secretary Patsie Hughes and Treasurer Jean Still gave their respective reports which were accepted as given.

Special guest Sherry Lile brought news of the White Lotus Project she and coworker Debbie founded in Cambodia. Sherry has been doing mission work in the country of Cambodia for 20 years. (This is a long way from her farm home north of Ethel where the Lile family lived for many years.)

Emily Switzer and Marilyn Dowell served refreshments following the CWF benediction.

Spark Up Our Park Here is the latest from Tammy ‘N Darla concerning the Spark Up Our

Park project. The goal of $19,000.00 has been met and then some. This has opened the door for ordering an 8 foot merry go round, spring riders and a “little kid climber” for the small fry. A top quality mulch has been ordered and then (quite a nice gesture) a grandpa from Marceline volunteered his dump truck to haul the mulch. That is a great saving for the park fund.

Kevin at the Bucklin Lumber Co. donated the heavy duty swings and chains. I hear they have arrived and are ready to put up. Kevin also purchased a couple of small swings for the little folks.

Plans are to have the play fort or house ordered in the near future.

Keep an eye on the park when you pass by… things are happening, positive things.

Third Bucket List Trip (Note: an old friend rode with me in the green golf cart as we toured the town a recent May Monday.

This is a condensed version of her notes. There will be more of Faye’s observations next week. My space is limited.)

She writes: Monday was a lovely day, too pretty to stay indoors, so Doris and I did another “Bucket List” trip. This is our third one now, and seems like the last one is always enjoyed more than the others. This one started with my request of a tour of all of Bucklin, viewed from her trusty golf cart. It was nice to cruise around, seeing all the neatly mowed lawns, pretty lilac bushes, and various spring flowers in full bloom as well as the freshly planted flowers in the barrels all along Main Street.

Some points of interest: the light lilac painted bench with a large purple plant at the Vobornik/Reid

home. Going North down Lathrop street, past the Hughes home, it was sad to see the big Pettit house is being demolished. That is another lifetime landmark that will soon be gone.

We got a friendly wave from Larry Hosford as he weeded his canna plants.

We waved at two construction workers (Jim and Roy) enjoying their lunch at the park, then on by Glen Kitchen’s lovely home and nice rock wall fence. We saw some homes in that area that I remember as the Constant Larson home, Frank and Vi Fregoe’s home, the Raymond Head home and more.

The cemetery tour was educational, as I got to see where our dear family doctor‘s, our English teacher’s, several school mates‘, and friend’s gravesites were that I thought were buried in other cemeteries.

Back to the South side of town: I got to see Lou Jean’s new little tax office building, a classmate’s parent’s retirement home place, the Cohoons, that I never knew existed in Bucklin. The home sits back in a nice very private area. We noticed Jack Wild had his large gardens planted.

Doris told me who presently lives in most of those homes now, and I remembered them being owned and lived in by residents of the 1950’s.

Compassion Center And Macon County Ministries Due to technical difficulties, last week’s article on the Compassion Center and Macon County Ministries was inadvertently cut off. The remainder of the story is as follows: Although 207 Vine is for sale, it is still being used by MCM as a distribution center for larger items than the Better Living Center can manage, and it could be available in a crisis situation for a

central drop off/distribution center. Fans and water could be handed out in a heat crisis, or blankets, flashlights, etc., during an ice storm.

Linda also complimented the Crossroads Christian Church on their Agape’ Café. Each Saturday they deliver hundreds of free lunches to those in need. The Café also serves a free lunch on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month.

It is located at the Macon American Legion Hall at 105 South Rollins Street (just south of the bowling alley. For more information, contact Jamie Elrod at 660-676-7731.

In order to coordinate efforts, Samaritan Hospital has a luncheon the first Thursday of each month for all service groups to meet and share their needs and accomplishments.

STATE TRACK

La Plata Ladies’ Golf Association Meeting Pres. Mary T. called the meeting to order with 13 members present. Items discussed during the meeting were: purchasing an ice machine for the course, catering for the golf tournament in June, signs for our generous supporters, and various duties on the day before/day of the tournament. Several of the ladies’ husbands have kindly volunteered to help us on the day of the tournament by getting our carts, carrying ladies’ bags to their carts, putting water on the course,

and spotting golf balls. Our tournament is a success because our members, their spouses, golf course staff, and local businesses are willing to help out.

Following the meeting and 3 / 4 person scramble was played with each team having the chance to “do over” their worst hole in the end. The team of Patty B., Mary V., Ann B., and Friday R. won with a score of 33. The team of Velva, Aletha, and Debbie came in second with 34.

State Track was held last weekend, May Jeana Noel won Level 5 Heart of Missouri gymnastics 17th & 18th at Jefferson City. Above Hunter championship on Saturday, May 4, 2013 in Jefferson Howe, La Plata, runs the 4x200 meter relay City. She received 1st place on bars, beam, vault and and below Seth Shurvington, Bevier, runs 2nd place on floor. the 110 meter hurdles during the competition. NRCS Asking Farmers To Monitor Water Quality The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is asking farmers of land in targeted watersheds in Missouri to partner with the agency to monitor the quality of water that runs off their fields.

NRCS State Conservationist J.R. Flores said NRCS will pay for the monitoring equipment and will provide funding to landowners who voluntarily install conservation practices on fields where the monitoring indicates a water quality concern.

“The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of water that leaves fields,” Flores said. “The first step is to get a good idea of what is in the runoff.

Then, where there are problems, we can provide both technical and financial assistance to help farmers solve them.”

Flores said Missouri’s edge-of-field water quality monitoring project is part of NRCS’ goal of improving the quality of water, both locally and all the way to the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River. The data will be used to help producers adapt management practices on farms, to document the public benefits of con-

servation practices, and for national water quality modeling efforts.

Missouri has 94 small (12-digit priority) watersheds that are eligible.

Those 94 watersheds are contained within seven larger watersheds. They are: Cache River, Little River Ditches, and Lower St. Francis watersheds in southeastern Missouri; North Fork Salt, South Fork Salt and Lower Grand watersheds in the northern part of the state; and Opossum CreekNorth Fork Spring River watershed in southwestern Missouri.

The deadline for applying for this edge-of-field monitoring project is June 14. Flores said interested landowners should contact

their local NRCS offices before then to determine if their farms are within one of the included 12-digit priority watersheds and to submit applications. Applications will be evaluated nationally, and compete with water-quality projects in other states for funding under NRCS’ Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

In Missouri, monitoring professionals and contractors will work with participants to conduct the monitoring services once a contract has been approved. Flores said that specific data collected via monitoring are protected by farm bill law and will only be shared as authorized by the participants.

Friday evening, May 10, 2013, at the Bucklin Eighth Grade School Graduation Brianna Kayleen Suzanne Jackson and Cheyenne Briar Peterson were presented the The American Legion School Award by Green Hills Post 57 Officers Robert Jobson and Larry Kinnison. Youth are often awarded for their scholastic achievements, but The American Legion believes they should also be praised when they demonstrate strong qualities of character and good citizenship. Since 1926, the Legion

has recognized such students with its School Award Medal Program.

All eighth grade students were voted upon by the Bucklin school’s faculty through a secret ballot casting. The selection is based on courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service.

The Department of Natural Resources conducted a source water assessment to determine the susceptibility of our water source to potential contaminants. This process involved the establishment of source water area delineations for each well or surface water intake and then a contaminant inventory was performed within those delineated areas to assess potential threats to each source. Assessment maps and summary information sheets are available on the internet at http://maproom.missouri.edu/swipmaps/pwssid.htm. To access the maps for your water system you will need the State-assigned identification code, which is printed at the top of this report. The Source Water Inventory Project maps and information sheets provide a foundation upon which a more comprehensive source water protection plan can be developed.

Why are there contaminants in my water?

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: A. Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

B. Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial, or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

C. Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses.

D. Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems.

E. Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally-occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the Department of Natural Resources prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Department of Health regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Is our water system meeting other rules that govern our operations?

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources regulates our water system and requires us to test our water on a regular basis to ensure its safety. Our system has been assigned the identification number MO2010451 for the purposes of tracking our test results. Last year, we tested for a variety of contaminants. The detectable results of these tests are on the following pages of this report. Any violations of state requirements or standards will be further explained later in this report.

Do I need to take any special precautions?

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immunocompromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800426-4791).

Special Lead and Copper Notice:

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. LAPLATA is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by MO2010451 flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. SMCL. Secondary Maximum Contaminant Level, or the secondary standards that are non-enforceable guidelines for contaminants and may cause cosmetic effects (such as skin or tooth discoloration) or aesthetic effects (such as taste, odor or color) in drinking water. EPA recommends these standards but does not require water systems to comply April 15,concentration 2013 of a contaminant which, when exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements which a water system must follow..

Monday, AL: Action Level, or the TT: Treatment Technique, or a required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water.

90th percentile: For lead and Copper testing. 10% of test results are above this level and 90% are below this level.

Level Found: is the average of all test results for a particular contaminant.

Range of Detections: Shows the lowest and highest levels found during a testing period, if only one sample was taken, then this number equals the Level Found.

MRLDG: Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level Goal, or the level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health.

MRDL: Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level, or the highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water.

RAA: Running Annual Average, or the average of sample analytical results for samples taken during the previous four calendar quarters.

LRAA: Locational Running Annual Average, or the locational average of sample analytical results for samples taken during the previous four calendar quarters.

With the arrival of May the hummingbirds are here!!! They are seeking sweet nectar. Always glad to see them. Lilacs are blooming here. We are having a rather cool damp Spring. So good to see the sunshine. Farmers are waiting to plant when the ground dries a bit more.

Some have planted a small amount of corn. The green you see is the greenest you will see--beautiful time of the year. Past weekend mothers, daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters gathered to celebrate their families this weekend.

New this year, a Motorcycle Show will be held across from J & R Market on Front Street.

Please note that this year’s parade has been moved to 1:00 p.m., and the line-up will begin

on 2nd Street just east of Highway 149 and continue up Marion Avenue.

The parade will travel down Highway 149 one block, across Front Street and back up Frankfort Avenue/Route O. All area organizations, businesses and families with connections to Novinger are encouraged to participate.

Prizes will be awarded for floats, cars, and horse entries, as well as the largest group and an overall winner. No pre-registration is required. Parade winners will be announced on the stage immediately following the Veterans Memorial Service and the Recognition Event for former Coal Miners.

The Macon Women of Today’s Woman of the Year held an awards banquet at Noland’s Catering in Macon. Woman of the Year 2012 was awarded to Linda Truitt and Stephanie Schneider received the Outstanding New Member of the Year award. Macon WOT is a civic organization that

supports local and national charitable causes through fundraising and volunteer efforts. Once a year, the WOT organizations in Missouri choose a Woman of the Year from their local community/ county who have been active in the community, and go on to compete at the State level.

MaKenzie entered the judging category and she received a blue, a red and a white ribbon. Madison entered the creative table setting category and received a blue ribbon. Erin Michelle Boren, a graduating senior at La Plata R-II High School, has won a $2,000.00 MFA Foundation scholarship. The scholarship was awarded at the school’s awards assembly.

Small crappies are good practice, but if you want to catch slabs, get away from the little guys because the big ones aren’t likely to be among them.

Most crappie anglers think they’ll find the big slabs in deep water but more often than not, you’ll find them in shallow water.

Crappie are special prizes because they are abundant and always ready for a tussle. It doesn’t hurt that, when rolled in cornmeal and deep fried, crappies are also delicious.

Many of us cut our fishing teeth on sunfish and the truth is, they are still as much fun to catch now as they were back then.

The hottest action will occur during their spawning time around the time of the full moons of April through June, depending on your latitude. They will be simple to find and easy to catch. Just look for their plate-size beds up shallow along shorelines. Sometimes you will find a dozen beds in an area the size of a car.

They will fiercely guard their nest from any intruder, including your bait.

Wear polarized sunglasses so you can better see the nest. If bait fishing, small worms and crickets work well weighted with just a single split shot or nothing at all.

Soft plastic baits of all kinds are also productive. Cast past the nest and crawl your bait through it.

When you feel the fish move, set the hook.

Docks are great places to catch bass, but some docks are better than others.

Docks in clear to moderately clear lakes are better than those in stained or algae-laden waters.

Those with constant foot traffic are less productive than those used less frequently. For example, resort docks and gas docks are usually poor prospects. On docks with a lot of daytime use, morning might be the only time the fish will be there.

Windswept docks are never as good as those in calm water.

Three or more warm days in a row tend to draw more fish to docks than post-cold front conditions, and midday is usually better than morning or evening.

Docks with barking dogs or crabby owners are usually not worth the bother.

Trails & Rails Every day at 3pm, Amtrak’s Southwest Chief departs the south concourse at Chicago Union Station. For the first 1.5 miles out of the station, the train travels due south, then makes a sweeping right turn under Canal Street and heads out through Chicago’s western suburbs.

Soon, the announcement is made over the train’s public address system, “Good afternoon, on behalf of Amtrak and the National Park Service, welcome aboard the Southwest Chief.”

On May 18, that greeting was the start of the latest trains & Rails partnership program between the National Park Service and Amtrak, providing rail passengers with educational opportunities that foster an appreciation of a selected region’s natural and cultural heritage. Gaining support for another Trails & Rails program was not easy. Co-sponsor for the new program is Texas A&M University’s Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences. The new program on the Southwest Chief became reality when the railroad-themed Depot

Inn & Suites in La Plata agreed to provide lodging for he volunteer docents.

Although Southwest Chief currently has one Trails & Rails program operating between La Junta, Co and Albuquerque, NM, a second Trails & Rails segment was developed in cooperation with the American {Passenger Rail heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization in La Plata, MO, that maintains exhibits relating to passenger rail history in America.

The president of the Foundation and La Plata coordinator is Bob Cox. The Chicago- La Plata Train & Rails program will operate four days a week for the 2013 season, May 18th through September 22nd. Guides will ride westbound from Chicago on train No. 3 Thursdays and Saturdays and eastbound from La Plata on train No,.4 Fridays and Sundays. In March, the new Rails & Trails group met in Chicago along with docents from Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park, who volunteer on the Trails & Rails program aboard Amtrak’s Wolverines. Susan Scott, instruc-

tor and internship coordinator at Texas A&M, and Anne McGinnis from Amtrak conducted the joint training session.

The morning session included Amtrak’s mandatory safety course, covering various types of emergencies that might occur while on Amtrak trains. That was followed

by Scott’s Interpretation Training Module, teaching docents how to facilitate a connection between the interests of the passengers and the significance of the landscape and history outside the window. McGinnis led the afternoon training explaining the National park Service’s Volunteer in Parks Program.

Volunteers and Parks Service personal are part of the National Parks Service mission, which aims to preserve “unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National park System for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations.” Robert and Kandace Taben, Chicago coordinators for the La Plata group, made concluding remarks.
