Macon R-1 Band received a proclamation on the steps of the capitol Thursday, May 15 in Jefferson City. The honor was for the tradition of excellence the band program has received by earning 41 consecutive I ratings at large ensemble festival.

Memorial Day: Observance and Tradition

Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday in United States. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day 2008 is on May 26. This day is to honor and remember U.S men and women who have died in military service to their country. It initially began to honor Union Soldiers who died during the American Civil War. For many, it marks the beginning of summer. Schools are often dismissed on Memorial Day. This holiday, often people visit cemeteries and memorials. At 3 pm, Washington time, a National Moment of remembrance takes place. Another traditional practice on Memorial Day is to fly the National flag at half staff from dawn to the noon local time. At numerous cemeteries, the graves of the martyrs are increasingly ignored and neglected. Most people no longer commemorate the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that continue to hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Gradually, as years pass by, the present generation is confused whether Memorial Day is for honoring any and

Early Literacy Grant Awarded to Macon Public Library

The Macon Public Library received an early literacy grant from the Missouri State Library. The Missouri State Library launched the Racing to Read Early Literacy Initiative recently. This initiative is based on the early literacy principles of Every Child Ready to Read and noted success of the program at the Springfield-Green County Library District. Committed to supporting early literacy through libraries grant money was provided by the Missouri State Library through the Library Services and Technology grant programs.

“Rock-A-Bye Reading” was provided with $7,393 to provide family and caregivers of young children birth through kindergarten age. In June three programs will be held for parents that are especially designed to support and expand early literacy learning. Each family in attendance will receive one free book for each program they attend. The grant also provides the library with funds to add additional technology equipment that supports early literacy learning.

In 1915, inspired by the poem “In Flander’s Fields”, Moina Michael replied with her own poem: We cherish too, the Poppy red That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies.

Moina Michael then conceived of an idea of wearing red poppies on Memorial day in honor of those who died serving the nation during the American Civil War. She was the first one to wear. She also sold poppies to her friends and co-workers and the money went for the benefit of servicemen in need.

Other countries also appreciated the custom and were inspired to observe a similar Memorial Day in their own country. Some Madam Guerin from France visited the United States and learned

of this new custom started by Ms.Moina Michael and when she returned to France, made artificial red poppies to raise funds for war-orphaned children and widowed women.

This tradition spread to other countries. In fact France and Belgium observe something similar called the Remembrance Day that marks the end of World War I. The Netherlands honor fallen soldiers and civil victims from World War II, but also from wars in Indonesia and other wars, on May 4th, 1 day before “Bevrijdingsdag” (Liberation Day in honor of liberation from Nazi Germany on May 5, 1945). In Ireland, National Day of Commemoration commemorates all Irish who died in past wars or in service with the United Nations.

In Israel, Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day) is observed one day prior to Independence Day. In Australia and New Zealand, April25 is observed as a remembrance of the people who died at Gallipoli during World War I.

Grant Awarded to Macon Public Library

DARE graduation was on May 6th at 2:00 at Brashear Elementary. Mrs. Smith’s 5th grade class sang the DARE song to the parents and other students. They wrote essays about what they learned during the DARE education classes taught by SRO Rich Harden. Hannah Grissom got 1st place, Garrett Housman got 2nd place, and Callie Althide got 3rd place. Madison Taylor and Austin Peterson also read

their essays. All students got a gift bag containing water bottles and a pencil bag.

Also each student received a DARE graduate pin and a diploma. The essay winners also received essay winner pins. The DARE graduates this year were Callie Althide, Trace Gottman, Lathan Grgurich, Hannah Grissom, Garrett Housman, Austin Peterson, Nikiah Smith, and Madison Taylor.

Troop B Officers To Participate In Operation C.A.R.E. And 20-Mile Trooper Enforcement Operations During The 2014 Memorial Day Weekend Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces upcoming plans for Troop B officers to participate in Operation C.A.R.E. and 20-Mile Trooper enforcement programs over the 2014 Memorial Day weekend.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during the long holiday weekend. This means every available officer will be on the road enforcing traffic laws and assisting motorists.

Additionally, Troop B officers will be conducting a 20-Mile Trooper project on U.S. Highways 24, 36, and 63 throughout the Troop B area on May 23, 2014 and May 26, 2014. During this enforcement program, troopers will be assigned to 20-mile intervals in an

effort to step up traffic enforcement with a goal of reducing traffic crashes over the holiday weekend.

This year’s Memorial Day weekend counting period is from 6 p.m., on Friday, May 23, 2014, to 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 26, 2014.

“Memorial Day is the first long holiday weekend of the year and many people will be travelling on Missouri roadways,” stated Captain Wilt. “I would like to urge all motorists to make sure safe driving is a part of your plans. Make sure everyone is wearing a seat belt, and never drink and drive.”

City of La Plata Mayor’s Report A report was received of debris that had been dumped in the La Plata Cemetery. Upon investigating, floral wreaths and flowers from last Memorial Day were found dumped along the west edge of the cemetery. Street department employees worked several hours hauling off the debris as well as leveling off excess dirt that was piled up on the west side of the cemetery. There are several large pieces of concrete located at the same location that have been offered to the La Plata Special Road District.

MoDOT will be mowing the ditch and bank area at the cemetery prior to Memorial Day. After discussion and correspondence with Jerry Edwards of C & R Markets, the Trial de Nova appeal against the City of La Plata regarding the late fees charged against their August 2012 utility bill was voluntarily dismissed

by C & R. There have been several dog complaints and one involved the biting of a postal employee on April 4th. As a result of that incident, a citation was issue to the owner of the dog and postal delivery has been interrupted at the Senior Citizens units just north of the square on Gex Street where the incident happened as well as the residence of the owner of the dog. The owner of the dog appeared in court on Friday, May 2nd and was found guilty of allowing a dog to run at large.

The local post office will be unable to reinstate mail delivery until the owner satisfies all the stipulations of the St. Louis office. Ruth Larrick, local postmaster has told me that if a postal employee feels threatened by a dog, postal service will be interrupted at the location of the incident and the resident (s) at the address will be required to rent a post office box in which to have their mail delivered. Therefore, the City of La Plata encourages all dog owners to please keep your animals confined in a pen or on a leash.

Four letters were mailed to residents as a result of

dogs attempting to bite city employees while they were reading utility meters or in two cases the animals being either tied up near the utility meters or confined in an area where the meters are located. All utility meters must be accessible to city employees at all times and citations will be issued to those residents that don’t comply with this ordinance in the future.

Communication was sent to legislators expressing our concern about HB 1865. The passage of this bill would mean a loss of approximately $12,000.00 per year to the city. As a result of communication received by the legislators, the Missouri Municipal League has reported that the bill has been assigned to the Senate Ways & Means Committee and it was expected that substitute language removing the local sales and use tax exemption would be offered.

This time of year produces the threat of storms …. the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church just north of town on US Hwy 63 continues to be available to residents as a storm shelter as well as the basement of the La Plata Post Office.

There may possibly be one other location available in the near future.

Many of the fire hydrants in town have several layers of paint and the council voted to accept a bid from “The Traveling Sandblaster”, Ricky Noyes, to sandblast the water hydrants. Water department employees will assist with the project by applying a primer coat followed by a new coat of red paint.

Monthly yard waste pickup is provided to City of La Plata residents the last Tuesday of each month, April thru November and the first pickup was held during the week of April 29th. Citizens are reminded that yard waste MUST be in clear or transparent bags that can be distinguished from regular trash and limbs must be in 4’ bundles. Very strong XL clear trash bags may be purchased from City Hall for $1 each for this purpose. The next yard waste

pickup will be held the week of May 27th.

On May 2nd, fourteen students from Ms. Lund’s 7th Grade Exploratory Choices Class of LHS visited La Plata City Hall in order to find out how City Hall operates. City Clerk Bobbie Jacques, Utility Billing Coordinator Debbie Aldridge, and the Mayor explained our duties and some of the day to day activities involved with our responsibilities.

The La Plata City Council held a work session on Monday, May 5th with the La Plata Fire District regarding the possibility of a land acquisition from the City of La Plata in trade for the current fire station.

If an agreement is made, the La Plata Fire District is proposing the construction of a new fire station.

During the work session, the City Council and Fire District board members, James Replogle, Richard Burns, Steve Shipp, and Ray Ivy toured the present fire station and the land located north on Amoco Rd just southwest of the water tower.

Bulk pickup was held on Friday, May 9th and Advanced Disposal reported that excessive amounts of bulk pickup items as well as restricted items were located at a few residences.

In the future, Advanced Disposal will be using hang tags at residences that are not complying with trash pickup policies. Any resident that has appliances to get rid of any time of the year may contact City Hall for the names of those individuals that will provide the service FREE of charge.

The electrical department has been busy this month trimming trees as well as cutting down some trees that have grown into City electrical power lines. This maintenance program is being done in order to prevent a serious problem from occurring in case of a severe wind storm that could push trees into power lines and therefore cause a power outage.

The water department began maintenance projects this month by replacing a water meter that they weren’t able to shut off as per the request of the customer. Memorial Day was originally called from both the North and South came together at that place to Decoration Day. It was a day set aside to honor honor their dead soldiers. Former enemies coming together to both the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War (1861-1865). People used the occasion to decorate their soldiers’ graves.

Although there are stories of “grave decoration” days in all parts of the country, one of the first of national importance was in 1868 at Gettysburg, Pa., where both sides’ armies fought a fierce battle in 1863 and where soldiers from both sides are buried. Five years later, people

honor their dead was a sign that the nation might be healing from the Civil War.

MEMORIAL DAY IS A NATIONAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATED THE LAST MONDAY IN MAY. FOR MANY, THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS DAY IS THAT IT MARKS

Eventually, Decoration Day became known as Memorial Day and a time to honor all those who have died who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States. In 1971, the United States Congress passed a bill declaring the last Monday in May was to be called Memorial Day and it was to be a national holiday.

The idea for Decoration Day came from Waterloo, New York, where the first commemoration was held May 5, 1866. Research this and the official proclamations recognizing Waterloo as the Birthplace of Memorial Day. What purpose do official proclamations serve?

The Macon Tigers got in a game last week against the South Shelby Cardinals. The field was far too wet in both Macon and Shelbina. Macon asked and was granted the ability to play the game in La Plata. The Tigers battled their longtime rivals through a scoreless first three innings. The Tigers plated two runs in the bottom of the third and the Cardinals came right back with a run of their own in the top of the next inning. The Tigers took control of the game in the bottom of the inning scoring four more. They added another late run and won the game going away 7-1. “We sent 8 guys to the plate in the 4th inning. We scored 4 runs on 4 hits that inning.”

& Hardware On Tuesday May 13th the La Plata Bulldogs played host to Knox County. It was the last regular game of the spring season and a tuneup for the District tournament to be held in La Plata. The Bulldogs jumped out of the gates early against Knox County. Matt Safley and Jace Brown reached base to lead off the game. Tanner Riggins singled to right, scoring Safley. Baylon Belt followed with a single to left scoring Brown. Dylan Slaughter made it for RBI singles in a row scoring Riggins. Pres-

ton Payne reached on an error that would score Belt and after one inning the Bulldogs led 4-0. The score would remain the same until the bottom of the sixth inning.

Alex Smith would walk and later score on a single from Hunter Howe to make the score 5-0. But the real story of the game was the pitching from the Bulldogs. Tanner Riggins would pitch a one hitter and strike out fourteen in a dominating performance. The Bulldogs would take a 5-0 victory and prepare for District play.

The Atlanta Hornets season has been nearly perfect.

The Hornets were undefeated going into the game and number one in the state for Class One. Ethan Baker would take them one step closer to that perfection. “Atlanta beats Brashear 11-0. The win moves the Hornets record to 12-0. Ethan Baker was the star on the mound and at the plate. He threw a run rule shortened Perfect game in his last regular season home game as a Hornet.

The BMC Raiders hosted Northwestern of Mendon on May 12th as a final tune-up to the District games in Sweet Springs.

The Raiders looked like they may have been looking ahead to the long trip for districts and was ambushed at home. The Eagles put up nine runs on the scoreboard and the Raiders were only able to respond with one run of their own. The Eagles take a 1-9 victory and send the Raiders into District play at Sweet Springs.

4-H Visits Gilbreth-McLorn House

The Oklahoma Indians 4-H Club enjoyed a tour of the Gilbreth-McLorn Historical house Wednesday, May 7, 2014 prior to their regular 4-H meeting. The clubs’ members, family and friends came to see the La Plata gem in our town. Show-Me State 30th Anniversary The Show-Me State Games, Missouri’s Olympic-style sports festival, is turning 30 this summer.

The Games is now accepting registration for more than 40 different events for all ages and ability levels.

The 2014 Games will be contested on June 20-22, July 18-20 and July 25-27 in Columbia, Mo. In an effort to educate Missourians about the 30th anniversary Games, the Show-Me State Games has been traveling the state to host Shelter Insurance® Torch Run events. The full schedule included Springfield on April 8, Joplin on April 9, Kansas City on April 22, Hannibal on April 25, St. Louis on April 29 and St. Charles on April 30. The Torch will be run in Jefferson City and Columbia on July 18, reaching its final destination - the Hearnes Center - for the Opening Ceremonies kicking off at 7 p.m. The Audrey Walton Opening

Ceremonies will feature a parade of athletes and lighting of the cauldron.

The Show-Me State Games is the largest event of its type in the country.

In 2013, 25,566 athletes competed in the event.

Thousands of spectators and hundreds of volunteers also attend the ShowMe State Games.

“We encourage all Missourians to find a way to be a part of our 30th anniversary of promoting health, fitness, family and fun - whether participating as an athlete, spectator or volunteer,” said Emily Lorenz, marketing coordinator for the Show-Me State Games.

The club is nominating MaKenzie as for Vice President, Madison as a nominee for Reporter, & Skyler as a nominee or 2nd Vice-President for 2014-2015 Adair County Council. We will be playing games at the La Plata Nursing Home on April 12. After we play games we will be going to the

McLorn House to pick up trash in the yard. We will be picking up food for the La Plata Food Bank on Saturday May 10, 2014 at 9 am. Achievement Night has been moved to June 28 at 1 pm at the Kirksville High School. NEMO Fair is going to be July 14-19.

The Missouri State Fair will be August 7-17.

Down on the Farm

A Monthly Feature for Our Area Farmers Handwringing and Problem Solving

It’s hard not to be optimistic in the spring — at least cautiously so. It is always a hopeful time for farmers. Crops are being planted; calving season is in full swing. Life is renewing itself on the farm, and promise is everywhere.

But farmers are also a pragmatic lot and mindful of what may come.

Farmers and ranchers plan for the unknown, and when an unexpected issue arises, they’re not the hand-wringing variety.

Most farmers are in the problem-solving business, whether it’s an issue that can be solved with a little baling wire and duct tape

or whether it’s one that requires education, inspiration and assistance.

Along with a handful of other careers, being a farmer, rancher or other agricultural manager was recently deemed the number one “career in crisis” by Yahoo. It wasn’t particularly “news” to farmers and ranchers. For decades, the number of farmers in the U.S. has declined; farming isn’t easy and its challenges are many. Federal regulations, rising input (seed, fertilizer, machinery, etc.) costs, Mother Nature and more provide opportunities for farmers to put their problem-solving skills to work and their passion to the test.

As struggle is no stranger to agriculture and the population continues

to grow, farmers evolve, work smarter and harder alongside a myriad of occupations tied to agriculture, using new technologies and methods to grow food. The efforts of farmers and ranchers support more than 21 million Americans who work in the agriculture industry — veterinarians, seed salespeople, tractor dealership owners, meat processors, agronomists … the list goes on. (In fact, if you’re looking for a job, you might consider something in the agriculture industry. Agcareers.com, one of the largest online job boards saw an increase of 29 percent in job postings in 2013 over 2012.)

The look and feel of the “mom and pop” farm the article mentions has also

been affected by the progress farmers have made.

Romantic ideas have given way to more efficient, practical and sustainable ways to farm. However, while these farms might look different, might not be what you expect, most are still family farms — more than 97 percent of Missouri farms are.

So it’s an interesting challenge we face, this so-called crisis. Do we wring our hands or do we become problem solvers? Only one of those options is acceptable because we will always need those who grow and raise food.

It includes a fail operation system. This system insures that if one aspect of the ActiveCommand ™steering fails, the overall steering will not completely stop functioning. There are two controllers in order to ensure one is always

working. John Deere uses a StarFire™3000 system in this tractor as a position receiver. Documentation from John Deere provided my insight into the 8335R. I found that John Deere says, “These tractors feature a world-class mobile office concept designed with producer’s input to optimize their operational experience.”

One of the most interesting qualities of this tractor is the AutoTrac™ assisted-steering system.

This system is a hands free operation along a group of known tracks. With this system the operator sets the first path by program-

ming the GreenStar™ display and driving the path.

The system is then able to draw parallel lines to that path and drive them. The only time the operator has to use the wheel is to turn the machine at the end of a row, but they can take over control anytime by turning the steering wheel. In order to make consistent end-of-row turns, this system is also equipped with iTEC™pro. JDLink is a data collection center that can provide the operator with information about location, machine hours, oil temperature, idle time, main intervals, and other machine settings. This

2014 spring turkey harvest up for third year in a row Harvest numbers reflect favorable weather and improved turkey production.

Hunters posted the third spring turkey harvest increase in a row, bettering last year’s number by more than 1,000 birds.

Hunters checked 43,273 turkeys during Missouri’s regular spring turkey season April 21 through May 11. Top harvest counties were Texas with 938 birds checked, Franklin with 921, and Laclede with 736.

Hunters age 6 through 15 checked 4,332 turkeys during the youth season April 12 and 13, bringing the 2014 spring harvest total to 47,605. That is the third consecutive increase since 2011, when the combined youth and regular season harvest was 42,226.

Favorable weather throughout much of this year’s spring turkey season

helped hunters, according to Resource Scientist Jason Isabelle with the Missouri Department of Conservation. He says this year’s harvest was also affected by improvements in turkey production.

“Prior to 2011, the state’s turkey population had struggled through four consecutive years of poor hatches,” says Isabelle.

“The improved hatches of 2011 and 2012 resulted in an increase in the number of adult gobblers available for hunters this spring.”

WOOD BORING INSECTS I normally have had several questions about different wood-boring insects by now but with our late winter they have got a late start too. It’s critical that homeowners and others keep track of these potentially destructive insects.

Termites are probably the most destructive insects and can damage a house or building in no time. It is critical that you are certain the insect you have is termites and not something else liked a winged ant.

The Extension Office can assist you in determining whether the problem you have is a termite or not.

Powderpost beetles are another potential problem insect that attacks wood.

The unique thing about these is that they make small, numerous “shot holes” in the wood they infest. If not treated, they can do significant damage after a period of time also.

The insect that I get lots of questions on in most years is the carpenter bees.

They look like bumble bees and swarm and although they do not sting, they do damage wood and are a major nuisance. They are particularly tough because they like untreated wood so attack places like building rafters, decks and other places. You have to fill the holes they make so they are very difficult to eliminate. Guide 7424 is on carpenter bees and you can get it online too at http://extension.missouri. edu/p/G7424. These are all insects that you need to be aware of and remember our office (1st floor of the courthouse in Unionville) can help you with identification and control.

Missouri’s safest spring turkey season was last year, when the Conservation Department recorded only one incident, which was nonfatal. The worst was 1986, with 31 reported incidents and two fatalities.

In the 10 years from 1985 through 1994, the Conservation Department recorded an average of 17.3 spring turkey hunting incidents per year.

The 10-year average from 2005 through 2014 was 4.8 per year. Fatal incidents averaged .6 per year during both 10-year periods.

Conservation Department Hunter Education Coordinator Kyle Lairmore says these statistics demonstrate the importance of hunter education in preventing hunting injuries.

“Since the inception of hunter education training, which became mandatory in 1987, more than 1 million Missourians have received formal firearms and safety training,” says Lairmore. “They make up a larger percentage of the hunting public every year, and that increase has been paralleled by a more than five-fold decrease in spring turkey hunting incidents. A season like the one we just had reminds us that we still have work to do, but it’s important to remember how far we

have come.”

Lairmore said volunteer hunter-education instructors and Conservation Department employees are responsible for dramatic gains in hunting safety over the past 27 years.

Simply put, he says, “They save lives.”

The Conservation Department’s First Turkey Program lets turkey hunters commemorate their first turkey kill with a certificate suitable for framing. You can even add a photo of the proud hunter with his or her bird. To create a first-turkey certificate, visit mdc.mo.gov/ node/10469. UPDATE: Formal charges have been filed against Hazel R. Benton, 26 of Mexico (MO) for stealing and receiving stolen property with $9,000.00 cash only bond. Charges were also filed against William C. Pollitte, 27 of Holts Summit (MO) for receiving stolen property and stealing with $9,000.00 cash only bond. Both subjects remain in custody at this time. (ORIGINAL RELEASE) On 05/05/14 at approximately 5:45 pm, the Macon Police Department received a report of a theft occurring within a business in the 100 block of South Missouri Street.

Employees of the business reported an undisclosed amount of cash from inside the business. A description of two suspects and the vehicle in which they left was obtained for further investigation. Officers located a vehicle fitting the description unoccupied in the downtown area and began to canvass the area to search for the suspects. An officer entered a business in the 100 block of North Rollins Street where they made visual contact with a female suspect, who attempted to flee out of the rear of

the business only to find the door was locked. At that time, the officer took the female suspect into custody without further incident. While this occurred, a male suspect fled the front door of the same business, ran to the South and hid between vehicles parked at Oak and Rollins Streets. He was apprehended in the parking area without incident. Both suspects were transported to the Macon Police Department for processing.

Items of evidence were seized involving property stolen from two Macon businesses and a stolen credit device from a victim in Mexico, MO. Further investigation into the situation led officers to believe other stolen property was being kept in a motel room located outside of the city limits in which the suspects were staying. The Macon County Sheriff ’s Office was contacted and officers of both agencies responded to the location.

After obtaining consent to search the room, police located and seized stolen computer equipment, credit cards and checkbooks. Police also seized a safe which contained methamphetamine and

drug paraphernalia. As a result, the two suspects, a 27-year old white male of Holts Summit (MO) and a 26-year old white female of Mexico (MO) were transported to the Macon County Jail where they were placed on 24hour hold pending formal charges.

On 05/06/14, the Macon Police Department conducted an investigation of drug distribution which led to the arrest of two suspects. Police made enforcement contact with a vehicle in a business parking lot in the area of Briggs Drive and Missouri Streets. As a result of the contact, police utilized the K-9 unit which gave indication of illegal substances within the vehicle.

A search was conducted with methamphetamine being located within the vehicle. One suspect was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, an undisclosed amount of cash, a firearm and ammunition, and items used for distribution of controlled substance. Two white male suspects were taken into custody and transported to the Macon Police Department for processing.

They were later taken to

the Macon County Jail where they were placed on 24-hour hold. Formal charges were later filed against Shaun R. Rayhart, 27 of Auxvasse (MO), for possession of controlled substance (meth) and possession of drug paraphernalia with $20,000 cash only bond set.. Formal charges were also filed against Larry D. Karhoff, 41 of Mexico (MO), for possession of controlled substance (meth) with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia with $50,000.00 cash bond set. Both suspects are in custody at this time.

On 05/07/14 at approximately 2:00pm, the Macon Police Department received a report of a disturbance in progress in the 100 block of Vine Street.

Police arrived on scene and located three individuals, two of which appeared to be involved in a verbal argument. As a result of the contact, police arrested a 21-year old black male of Macon for peace disturbance. The suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department where he was processed and re-

On 05/09/14, the Macon Police Department received a report of a theft occurring in the 800 block of South Rollins Street.

The victim reported an air conditioning unit and other items were missing from the property.

On 05/10/14, the victim met with a police officer who observed a section of fencing had been removed from the property as well as a household A/C unit missing from the exterior of the property and two windows. The items are valued at over $3,300.00.

This case remains under investigation at this time.

On 05/10/14 at approximately 8:25am, an officer of the Macon Police Department made enforcement contact with a vehicle in the area of Fourth and Missouri Streets. As a result of the contact, police arrested the driver for driving while license revoked

and vehicle registration violation. The driver, a 37year old female of Columbia (MO) was taken into custody and transported to the Macon Police Department for processing.

She was later released on summons pending a municipal court date.

On 05/11/14 at approximately 7:50pm, a Macon Police Officer made enforcement contact with a vehicle in the area of Missouri and Heade Streets.

As a result of the contact, police arrested the driver for an outstanding arrest warrant out of Linn County. James W. Shaw, 32 of Callao, was arrested for failure to appear on a traffic summons. Shaw was transported to the Macon County Jail to be held in lieu of bond.

A criminal charge is merely an allegation and the defendant is, of course, presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The May meeting of Atalpal II was held on May 8.

Thirteen members were present. The hostesses were Mary Plumlee and Jerry Prather, the program

First vice-president Mary Plumlee called the meeting to order. After the roll call, the minutes of the April meeting were read and accepted. The treasurer’s report was given by Shirley and accepted.

Old Business: A report by Becky on the March bloodmobile; a report on the good turn out for the local library’s Open House, and the report that the pictures of Atalpal II members in the nursing home newsletter will be sent to Maurine for the club scrapbook.

The pictures were taken at the nursing home birthday party.

The courtesy report had Mary passing a card for us to sign to send to Marie.

There was no correspondence except, as a new business item, a letter about a queen contest which we have sponsored contestants for in the past. It was decided by the group not to sponsor anyone this year as contestants can now enter on their own.

After the reading of the Club Collect, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be held at 4:00 pm on June 12.

Wanda and Shirley will be hostesses and Lenora will give the program.

We all enjoyed a meal the hostesses provided as well as the May program by Carol Hays. Carol read us several things, witty and wise and some with multiple meanings. The one on Grandma’s apron was a favorite. Mary favored us with a short contest as well as sweet favors. Before we left, we all sang Happy Birthday to Lenora.

90th Birthday Celebration: Fifty family members gathered at Floral Hall in Macon on May 3, 2014 to celebrate Leota Krawl’s 90th birthday. The day consisted of a carry-in dinner, gift opening, birthday cake and ice cream and catching up on all of the family news. Those attending were: Rosalie Mathis, Chris and Sarah Mathis, Susan Fink, Ronald Shelmadine and family of Bevier; Russell and Sharla Riley, Tammi Riley, Courtney Bunch and Carolyn Watson of Atlanta; Terri and Nathan Warman of Lees Summit; Chris Warman of St. Louis; Kathy Pipes, Christina Jones and family, Lisa Pipes and family of Madison; Nathan and Sherri Metzer and family of Dover, Arkansas and Anthony and Jennifer Davis and family of Monticello.

Women’s Council met at Atlanta Christian on May14 with eleven members present.

Carolyn Read read Matthew: 7:12 and opened the meeting with prayer. Central Christian College of the Bible students, Rachel and Ashley sent their thanks for the bags of snacks we gave them. Forty-eight flowers were purchased for Mother’s Day. Women’s Council will give $50 towards food for Shelby County Christian Assembly campers this summer.

It was decided to give cookies for Father’s Day again this year. Vacation Bible School will be held August 4th through 8th

with supper beginning at 5 PM. Closing program will be held on Sunday, August 10 Graduates from the church will be honored on May 18th. They are PreSchool- Dustin Magers; 8th grade- Emilee Britt, Houston Klamert, Drailyn King, Rachel Pickens, and Caleb Willis; Seniors Katy Baker, Hannah Britt, and Dylan Howe; and CollegeSteven Nelson. Thirty-six greeting cards were sent since the last meeting. Mae Graham volunteered to make books for the coming year. All of this year’s officers consented to serve again next year, which begins in September. They are President- Carolyn Read, Vice President, Mae Graham, Secretary- Marsha Hammons, TreasurerLinda Phillips; and Corresponding Secretary- Dawn Moore. Prayer requests were given and Ruth Sullivan led in prayer. Ruth then gave devotions entitled “ Greeting the Day” She gave each one present a coffee mug with one of the following words printed on it: “Laugh”, “Believe”, or “Cherish”. Mae Graham offered the closing prayer.

Macon County Sheriff ’s Office received a report of an intentionally set structure fire in Atlanta, Missouri. An investigation of fire in Atlanta provided Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies with evidence that resulted in the arrest of James C. Fisher and Charles T. Reed VI. The Sheriff ’s office was we were assisted by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

James C. Fisher is being held in the Macon County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond. Charles T. Reed VI is being held in the Macon County Jail on bonds totaling $15,000.

On May 17, 2014, at

about 12:00 p.m., Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies arrested 46 year old Todd E. Becker of Atlanta, Mo., for manufacturing/producing a controlled substance and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. The arrest was the result of an assault investigation in Atlanta, Missouri.

On May 17, 2014, at about 11:45 a.m., Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies responded to Atterberry Street in Atlanta, Mo. to investigate an alleged assault. During the investigation, the alleged victim in the assault presented allegations of marijuana plants being grown by Todd E. Becker inside their residence. During the investigation, Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies found twenty four actively growing marijuana plants, two separate growing operations and drug paraphernalia located inside the suspect residence.

Todd E. Becker is being held in the Macon County Jail on a $45,000 bond.

Sheriff’s Report On May 16, 2014, at about 5:30 p.m., Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies arrested 22 year old James C. Fisher of Atlanta, Mo. for 2nd degree arson, 2nd degree burglary, possession of burglary tools and stealing. On May 17, 2014 at about 10:00 p.m. with the assistance of the Kirksville Police Department, Sheriff ’s Deputies arrested Charles T. Reed VI on four active Macon County warrants. SHIRLEY DAMERON

December 19, 1939- May13, 2014 Shirley Dameron, 74, of Macon, MO, passed away on Tuesday, May13, 2014, at her home in Macon. Shirley was born on December 19, 1939, in College Mound, MO. She is survived by two sons; Mitch Dameron; Mike Dameron; three grandchildren; Nicole Dameron, Marrisa Long and Taylor Dameron.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Bill. Funeral services were Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the Hutton and McElwain Funeral Home in Macon. Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Macon.

What happened to Spring? These last few days were beautiful and warm, but yesterday and today have been very miserable.

I hate cool and rainy days.

Come on Summer.

Friday I stopped at a garage sale in Macon and got some nice pieces of antique glass and on my way home. Saturday I stopped at a garage sale and got a beautiful and very large picture. I put the picture in my upstairs bathroom that has a second life as an art gallery.

It has been a busy week for every one in and around our area. School is winding down and is almost over for the summer.

Sunday was graduation for Macon High School.

One of the members of Macon’s graduation class was my granddaughter Kaylee Marie Claus. We were worried all morning that it would rain and the graduation would have to be held inside, but the sun came out and it was a beautiful afternoon.

The program was very inspiring with the senior Processional and the singing of the National Anthem led by the senior choir members. The speaker was Kristie Douglas-Wiley and she was a very gracious and motivational speaker. A lot of Kaylee’s family was there and we all loved seeing her graduate. Kaylee has donated her two weeks to help with the end of school activities at Callao School.

She said she wants to be a

teacher After graduation was over some of the family went out to dinner. Those going with Kenny and myself were, Laura, Mitch, Derek, Kaylee, and Katherine of Callao, and Bonnie and John McMurry of Atlanta.

We also celebrated Mothers Day. I must say I had a great Mother’s Day. Daughter Amanda of St. Louis sent me a gift card so I went to Westlake’s and got two beautiful hanging plants.

Saturday the flower shop in Macon delivered me one large hanging plant and a very large potted plant. After dinner Sunday Laura gave me a large plant. Needless to say my front porch is in bloom.

Bonnie and John got me a wax warmer and several packs of scented wax. All of them have a wonderful scent but I must say I love the Bourbon Pecan the best. Raymond and Jess brought me some sweets and some chocolate. It was a great Mother’s Day. I know a lot of mothers in our town had a lot of children in for a visit.

Tuesday Laura, Mitch, Kaylee and Katherine of Callao come over for a visit. It is always great to have them over. Today grandchildren Kaylee and Derek came by for a visit and later Raymond came by with daughters Norma and Bella. Always great to have the kids come by.

Almost an inch of rain came to refresh our world this weekend. The temperatures had been agreeable. We love seeing the sunshine. Many trees have leaves out now. We have baby bluebirds in the bluebird house and the hummingbirds are here. Spring is an exciting time for us.

Jerry Summers was a Saturday visitor in the Bud and Donna Seibold home.

Richard and Sharron Burns attended the senior receptions for Timerrick Gunnels, Travis Grove, Skylar Rhodes and Hannah Larson following graduations Sunday afternoon.

The La Plata Community Fire District Board of Directors met with the La Plata City Council May 5th.

The Friends for La Plata Preservation met May 5th.

They are preparing for the City Wide Yard Sale on June 14th.

Lana and Mike Daniels held a Mother’s Day celebration for Tommy Daniels, Lori Daniels, Eric Daniels Roger and Mary Jarman Sunday.

Sunday brought a wonderful sermon on mothers given by David Moore at the Gifford Christian Church. Enjoying the sermon were Dona and Jerry Gray, Rich and Sharron Burns, Kirby Bailey, Debbie Newland, Melanie Cook, Faith Cook, Donna Kelly, Jean Elliot, Dean and Marietta Slaughter, Chad, Amanda, Claire, Morgan and Shelby Belfield.

Saturday Ronda and Steve Van Hara, Brady, Denise and Braden Watson attended the Mike and Tina Van Hara wedding reception held at their home near Tory Mills.

The Oklahoma Indians 4-H helped the letter carriers collect food for the La Plata food bank Saturday.

They also planted flowers at the La Plata post office.

Amy Burns and friend Jamie Langbart and son, Druie Langbart, came to visit Richard and Sharron Burns Saturday. While there, they helped Richard celebrate his 72nd birthday and Mother’s Day. Sunday, Marilyn Sinnock attended the Hunter Howe graduation reception.

The Gifford community council met Thursday.

They will be opening the street North of Gifford Christian Church. They are also planning on putting a floor in the shelter house in the park. Attending were Dean Aholt, Neva Atterberry, Cindy Draken, Ronda Van Hara, Donna Gray. Visitors were Jerry Gray and Cecil Storer.

The Northeast Missouri Ham Radio Club met Sunday in Kirksville with Vance Myers, Don Binder, Paul Doi, Kerry Halery, Bud and Donna Seibold, Pam Barnett and Joseph Markiewicz, Alex Fleak, Ferrell Mc Clahan present.

Plunge for Landon

What is Plunge for Landon?

The Plunge for Landon is a fundraiser that started off as a Facebook post for the Tarkio, Missouri boy who was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer in February.

The idea is to plunge into cold water and challenge at least 3 people. People donate a certain amount of dollars for each who jumps within 24 hours!

U.S. Rep. Sam Graves, a Tarkio resident, posted a YouTube video of himself plunging into the Potomac

River in a suit and tie and challenged others to do the same.

Local women (pictured above) organized a group Plunge for Landon at Long Branch Lake State Park on May 10, 2014. Organizers were Christina Weideman, Kim Gaines, & Chandra Grawe. Volunteers that helped where Ghost Mixxed Entertainment, Angie Eymann and Dawn Russ.

Total raised was approximately $600 with t-shirt sales and money collected that day.

Heartland Headlines

It is graduation season, and Heartland families will be busy with a number of ceremonies. We started last week with three students receiving their Masters’ Degrees from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. These students have done their course work online while also holding down fulltime jobs, raising families, and serving in various ways in our community and our church.

Darin Rihanek, Nathan Mayes, and Jessica Bumgardner all graduated from Liberty with Masters’ Degrees this spring. They are also all graduates of Heartland Christian College. The Rihanek clan including Darin’s wife, Christie, their five daughters, and his parents from Lincoln, Nebraska, drove to Virginia for the ceremony. Darin is the worship pastor at Heartland Community Church and also a member of the faculty at Heartland Christian Col-

lege.

Nathan Mayes and his wife Jennie also drove to Virginia for commencement exercises. Nathan is also a member of the Heartland Christian College faculty and helps lead the youth group for our church.

Jessica could not make the trip to Liberty to wear her cap and gown since she is due to give birth to her second child any minute. She is a youth instructor at Heartland, and she and her husband, Josh, serve in many areas. Jessica managed to take part in the graduation ceremony on her computer through a live-stream from Liberty.

It is an amazing world where such things have become possible. We are so grateful for the initiative and dedication these students have shown. And we are especially grateful for colleges who make higher education possible even for folks who live in the middle of a cornfield.

Seibert Club Meets The Seibert Club of La Plata, met Wednesday, May 14, 2014, 8:00 a.m., at the commuter parking lot in La Plata. In lieu of a regular meeting, four members climbed into Marsha Yahl’s truck for a “day trip” to Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton, MO. Others making the trip were Kathy East, Irene Osborn, and Leila Ward.

We had heard of this company and realized that it is growing by leaps and bounds, so felt it would be an interesting and informative trip, as well as a lot of fun. The Missouri Star Quilt Company has several endeavors in this small town, which they have truly revived in so many ways. The main company itself has an amazing array of fabrics, patterns, and sample quilts all over the building. Everything is tastefully displayed and pleasing to the eye. In one room, employees cut fabrics for orders they have received “on-line”.

After buying fabrics there, we went up the street north to the Quilt Company Retreat Center on the east side. This wonderful two story brick building has been refurbished and remodeled into a center where classes of up to 40 people are held and they can accommodate 37 participants overnight. There is one bedroom/bath on the main floor for those who cannot climb stairs, and both women’s and men’s restrooms for use during the classes, and twin and queen beds upstairs with 6 community-type bathrooms. All rooms are beautifully decorated with quilts on some of the walls.

Classes are held on the main floor where they have several sewing machines, irons, and ironing boards available if someone coming to a class or retreat does not wish to bring their own machines, cutting mats, etc. Six classes are already scheduled for May 24, through July 17,

and there will no doubt be many more classes in the future!

Following our tour of the Retreat Center, we went across the street to another of their buildings.. This was the “Penney Quilt Shop”, formerly the old J. C. Penney Store.

Hamilton is the home of J. C. Penney, founder of the chain of J. C. Penney Stores and the J. C. Penney Museum is also in Hamilton.

We found many bolts of mostly solid-color fabrics already on the shelves and they were anxious to assist all who came through the doors. Guess what? We also bought fabrics there!

Our last stop to a Missouri Star Quilt endeavor was back down the street south where we entered “Sew Seasonal”. This building houses seasonal and special fabrics, such as Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Patriotic, Valentine, etc.

What an array of beautiful fabrics! Amazingly, fabrics were also purchased there. We also drove by their large warehouse that is near “Sew Seasonal”.

At the end of May or first part of June, 2014, they will open another building, which will feature Civil War and primitivetype fabrics. Many people are “into” those type fabrics and will really enjoy shopping in that store, which hasn’t been named yet!

We were now ready for lunch and went to “J’s Burger Dive” next to the first Missouri Star Quilt building we had toured.

There we enjoyed wonderful burgers, hand-cut French fries, and drinks.

Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles,

jalapenos, onions, etc. were available along with catsup, mustard, and mayonnaise. While we were there, one gentleman ordered a 1-lb burger—it was TALL and we wondered how he would ever get his mouth over the entire burger? It consisted of 4 quarterpound burgers with the lettuce, etc. in between, so he must have taken the sandwich apart at the bottom of each burger. We didn’t witness this feat! Ice cream was also available but we already had our eyes on “Poppi’s Bakery” next door, where they had homemade items, such as cookies, cinnamon rolls, pies, and muffins among other delicious-looking baked items.

So, it was next door to “The Bakery” and everyone got a wonderful cookie to take with us, thanks to Leila! Then, it was back to Hwy. 36 and we headed east to Macon. As we neared Macon, the Ben Franklin Store was “calling” to us because we knew they were having a sale on quilt fabrics! Oh, boy!!!

More fun looking and choosing fabrics, cards, and other items! Marsha’s truck headed to La Plata, where she dropped us off and continued on to her home near Kirksville.

What a wonderful, funfilled day we had!

Our next meeting will be June 11 with Kathy East as hostess for the Birthday Party. Roll Call will be “Our Favorite Salad Recipe” from May and “A Fact About Our Country” from June. Leila Ward will have devotions and the program will be “Show and Tell.

Monday was our first day to celebrate National Nursing Home Week. We designated today Red, White, and Blue Day. Donna Barton and the residents had a patriotic song sing-a-long in the morning. At noon, Mark grilled hamburgers for the staff and residents, and finished off their meal with the “All American” apple pie! The residents played Bingo this afternoon. The grand prizewinners were Blanche Hoffman, Darrell McDowell, and Norma Latimer.

Cardinal Day was the theme for Tuesday. The staff and residents wore their Cardinal apparel today. Susan Lenon visited with the residents this morning and told stories, sang songs, and just brightened everyone’s day! This afternoon’s activity was almost as fun as being at the ballpark!

The residents had Cracker Jacks and popcorn while listening to music, and some residents and staff even broke out their dance moves!

Wednesday was Wacky Wednesday. The residents and staff wore wacky, crazy hats, and wild mismatched

socks. Harold and Molly came by for their weekly visit in the morning, then Tim Worstell entertained with balloon art. He made lots of funny balloon hats, animals, and flowers for the residents and staff. Everyone was looking pretty crazy! The staff and residents wore their favorite Clarence Care Center t-shirts on Thursday.

Stephanie Holder and the residents made beautiful butterflies during Friendship Design this morning. The butterflies added a flair of spring to the residents’ rooms. Mark and Stephanie, along with Doreena Young, Colleen Reid, Marvin Burkhardt, and Virgie Engle traveled to Macon this afternoon to do a little shopping.

Bill Lear and Friends were here this evening.

We ended Nursing Home Week on Friday with Western Day. Cowboy hats and boots were the norm for the day. Stephanie and the residents played Snack Bingo this afternoon. The grand prizewinners were Isabel Hutcherson, Martha Mason, and Dorothy Dee Daniel.

Ronnie Shores came out Saturday and visited with the residents while they listened to his music cd’s.

The residents watched “McLintock” during Movie Time with Darrell this afternoon.
