David Acker during the 1438th Multi-Role Bridging Company’s Award Ceremony at the 1438th Awards and TOA Ceremony held by the 65th Engineer Battalion. The 1438th returns to Macon on Tuesday, May 27. Macon R-1 Band received a proclamation on the steps of the capitol Thursday, May 15 in Jefferson City. The honor was for the tradition of excellence the band program has received by earning 41 consecutive I ratings at large ensemble festival. Congratulations all band members present and past! Memorial Day: Observance and Tradition

Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday in United States. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day 2008 is on May 26. This day is to honor and remember U.S men and women who have died in military service to their country. It initially began to honor Union Soldiers who died during the American Civil War. For many, it marks the beginning of summer. Schools are often dismissed on Memorial Day. This holiday, often people visit cemeteries and memorials. At 3 pm, Washington time, a National Moment of remembrance takes place. Another traditional practice on Memorial Day is to fly the National flag at half staff from dawn to the noon local time. At numerous cemeteries, the graves of the martyrs are increasingly ignored and neglected. Most people no longer commemorate the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that continue to hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Gradually, as years pass by, the present generation is confused whether Memorial Day is for honoring any and Continued on Page 2A

Early Literacy Grant Awarded to Macon Public Library

The Macon Public Library received an early literacy grant from the Missouri State Library. The Missouri State Library launched the Racing to Read Early Literacy Initiative recently. This initiative is based on the early literacy principles of Every Child Ready to Read and noted success of the program at the Springfield-Green County Library District. Committed to supporting early literacy through libraries grant money was provided by the Missouri State Library through the Library Services and Technology grant programs. “Rock-A-Bye Reading” was provided with $7,393 to provide family and caregivers of young children birth through kindergarten age. In June three programs will be held for parents that are especially designed to support and expand early literacy learning. Each family in attendance will receive one free book for each program they attend. The grant also provides the library with funds to add additional technology equipment that supports early literacy learning. “The Rock-A-Bye Reading grant goes right along with our Summer Reading Program. Ralph (aka “The Tool Man”) Klusmann Day

Saturday, May 17th was “Ralph Klusmann Day” at the Macon County Historical Society. The day was marked to thank Ralph for his dedication and his many hours of volunteer work at the museum. In addition, the day of celebration included Ralph and his wife Martha’s 65th wedding anniversary on May 28th. Congratulations to Ralph and Martha! (Photos by Jan Watts)
