More than a thousand friends, family members and supporters crowded the Macon High School bleachers to send off the Missouri National Guardsmen of the 1438th Engineer Company on June 15, 2013 (pictured above), and now they have returned to the States! The Macon-based multi-role bridge company spent 10 months dismantling the numerous temporary, modular bridges built by the U.S. and British militaries throughout Operation Enduring Freedom. On the morning of May 9th, the 1438th Company touched down on American soil in Bangor, Maine just in time for the upcoming military holidays. A sincere Welcome Home from all of us!

La Plata Alumni District Track Meet Association Results - La Plata Wins!

Meeting The annual La Plata High School Alumni Association meeting will be held May 24, 2014 in the La Plata High School gymnasium.

Marianne Murphy to Retire After More Than 25 Years After more than two and half decades, the Bevier C-4 School District is saying goodbye to an outstanding teacher.

Marianne Murphy has announced her retirement after more than 25 years of teaching. Marianne graduated from Truman State University in 1978 with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. She continued her education in 1981 gaining a Masters in Counseling. Marianne began teaching at Bevier School in 1979. Although she has taught in many areas and age groups, most of her years were spent in middle school touching

the lives of her many students. Marianne resides in Bevier with her husband, George. They have a son Andrew and daughter-in-law Brianne. After retirement, Marianne plans on traveling, hunting, fishing, and substitute teaching. Marianne is also hoping to enjoy grandchildren someday very soon.

The Bevier CTA would like to invite the public in celebrating Marianne’s many successful years in education to an open house at the Bevier School cafeteria on Saturday, May 17th from 2:00 to 4:00.

On 05/05/14 at approximately 5:45 pm, the Macon Police Department received a report of a theft occurring within a business in the 100 block of South Missouri Street.

Employees of the business reported an undisclosed amount of cash from inside the business. A description of two suspects and the vehicle in which they left was obtained for further investigation. Officers located a vehicle fitting the description unoccupied in the downtown area and began to canvass the area to search for the suspects.

An officer entered a business in the 100 block of North Rollins Street where they made visual contact with a female suspect, who attempted to flee out of the rear of the business only to find the door was locked.

At that time, the officer took the female suspect into custody without further incident. While this occurred, a male suspect fled the front door of the same business, ran to the South and hid between vehicles parked at Oak and Rollins Streets. He was apprehended in the parking area without incident. Both suspects were transported to the Macon Police Department for processing. Items of evidence were seized involving property stolen from two Macon businesses and a stolen credit device from a victim in Mexico, MO. Further investigation into the situation led officers to believe other stolen property was being kept in a motel room located outside of the city limits in which the suspects were staying. The Macon County Sheriff ’s Office was contacted and officers of both agencies responded to the location. After obtaining consent to search the room, police located and seized stolen computer equipment, credit cards and checkbooks. Officers also seized a safe which contained methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. As a result, the two suspects, a 27-year old white male of Holts Summit (MO) and a 26-year old white female of Mexico (MO) were transported to the Macon County Jail where they were placed on 24-hour hold pending formal charges.

On 04/25/14 at approximately 3:20pm, officers of the Macon Police Department served an active arrest warrant upon an indi-

vidual in the 800 block of South Rollins Street. The suspect was arrested for an outstanding warrant out of Randolph County for possession of controlled substance with intent to distribute. The suspect was transported to the Macon County Jail and turned over to their custody to be held in lieu of bond.

On 4/26/14 at approximately 11:50pm, the Macon Police Department responded to assist with a medical call in the 800 block of Locust Street. The report was for a male subject who was breathing but unresponsive. Upon arrival, police made contact with several occupants of the residence who reported the male subject needed medical attention after smoking synthetic cannabinoids (also known as K2). The male subject was transported by EMS to the Samaritan Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Police continued the investigation of the report of use of synthetic cannabinoids and received consent to search the residence.

During the search, police seized several packages of the illegal substance and drug paraphernalia. As a result of the investigation, police later arrested a 23-year old white male of Macon for possession of synthetic cannabinoid and possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect was processed at the Macon Police Department and was then released on summons pending a Division II court date.

On 04/27/14 at approximately 3:40am, an officer of the Macon Police Department made enforcement contact with a vehicle in the area of Second and Goggin Streets. As a result of the contact, police arrested four minors and one juvenile for possession of alcohol. All suspects were transported to the Macon Police Department for processing. The juvenile was released to a parent and the Macon County Juvenile authorities will be notified of the investigation. A 17-year old white female of Moberly, an 18year old black female of Brunswick, an 18-year old white female of Moberly and a 19-year old white female of Macon were all arrested by police for minor in possession of alcohol by consumption. All suspects were processed and released on summons pending a municipal court

date.

On 04/30/14 at approximately 12:30am, an officer of the Macon Police Department made enforcement contact with a vehicle in the area of Bourke and Pearl Streets.

As a result of the contact, police arrested a 35-year old black male for driving while intoxicated, failure to provide proof of insurance and vehicle registration. The suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department for processing where he was issued summonses for the insurance and registration violations. He was later placed on 24-hour hold at the Macon County Jail pending formal charges.

Formal charges of felony driving while intoxicated were filed against Idris Ibrahim of Macon with bond being set at $9,000.00 cash only.

On 05/02/14 at approximately 11:50pm, an officer of the Macon Police Department made enforcement contact with a vehicle in the 1100 block of South Missouri Street. As a result of the contact, police arrested a 32-year old white male of Macon for driving while intoxicated and exceeding the posted speed limit. The suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department for processing and was later released on summons pending a municipal court date.

On 05/04/14 at approximately 7:30pm, the Macon Police Department received a report of a dog bite incident occurring in the 200 block of McKay Street. Police responded to the call where it was reported that a juvenile male on a bicycle was bitten by a dog as he rode through the area. The dog was reportedly not under control of the owner as it ran from its yard into the roadway where the boy was riding.

A witness to the incident assisted the juvenile by getting the dog away from him. The boy did not require medical attention for the bite as he was bitten in an clothed area. Police located the dog’s owner, a 59-year old white female, who was arrested for dog running at large. She was issued a summons and released pending a municipal court date.

A criminal charge is merely an allegation and the defendant is, of course, presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The Macon Tigers looked to continue their impressive baseball season with a home game Tuesday Night against Hannibal. The Tigers took control early with three runs in the first inning. “We sent 7 guys to the plate in the first inning.

Brendan Watts and Josh Turner had hits to lead off the game and Craig Smith recorded a well-executed bunt single down the third base line. Collin Patrick would record a RBI single after Craig’s bunt.” Coach Robuck The Pirates would score in the third to make the game a bit closer but Macon would get the run back in the fourth inning. The two teams would exchange runs in the sixth but the score would hold up for a 5-2 Tiger Victory. Collin Patrick would go 3-3 with a couple of singles and a double and one RBI. Josh Turner 2-3 with 2 singles, 2 runs, 1 stolen base. Brendan Watts, Craig Smith, Christian Thrasher, Trae Adams, Cole Birdsong had one hit each. “Our guys played clean baseball tonight and really looked sharp. We had 0 team errors and did a good job of getting bunts down when we needed to and executing early in the game. It was big for us to jump out to a 3-0 lead on

a team like Hannibal. Once we had the momentum we kept playing great defense and Craig closed them out in the 7th.” Robuck The Tigers would hit the road the following night to take on Mark Twain.

The Tigers scored early and often to take a commanding lead. With one in the first, five in the second and four in the third the Tigers led 10-4 after four innings. The Tigers would chip in another six runs on twenty-one hits to pound Mark Twain 16-4. Brendan Watts 4-5 with 4 singles and 2 RBI, Josh Turner 3-4 with 2 RBI singles and a triple Craig Smith 4-5 with 2 doubles, 2 singles and 4 RBI. Collin Patrick was 2-4 with 2 RBI and Jordan Bealmer added his1st career HR in the 3rd inning. Christian Thrasher, Trae Adams, Kaleb Welch, Skyler Thomas, and Cole Birdsong all recorded hits in the game. “After a slow start for us in the first inning, we seemed to wake up a bit and play better baseball the rest of the game. We really hit the ball well tonight as a team. We hit a lot of line drives and produced a lot of runs in this game. Ten different players recorded hits in this game, which is always good

to see.” Coach Robuck The Tigers wrapped up the week with a road trip to Louisiana on Friday. Craig Smith turned in another gem on the mound going 6 innings and allowing one earned run on five hits. Brendan Watts would close things out with a scoreless seventh. With Macon leading 1-0 in the top of the 5th Collin would hit a 2 RBI double scoring Brendan Watts and Josh Turner. This ended up being the game winning hit in the 5th inning. Josh Turner 3-3 with 2 singles, triple and a RBI Sac Fly. Brendan Watts 2-4 with a double, single and 2 runs scored. Collin Patrick 2-3 with a single and a 2 RBI double and Trae Adams, Christian Thrasher, and Cole Birdsong had1 hit each. “This game was typical of most of our season. Our pitching and the defense were good for us tonight and we scored enough to win. Craig pitched his way around a few scattered hits and really controlled the game for us on the mound. Josh, Brendan, and Collin all had good nights for us at the plate and generated some runs.” Robuck

The La Plata Bulldogs hosted the Green City Gophers Monday night on the home turf at the La Plata Sports Complex. The Gophers came out smoking scoring five runs in the first and tacking on another run in the second to hold a six run lead. The Bulldogs would battle back in the bottom of the second. Dylan Slaughter and Alek Smith walked, Ty Davison singled to load the bases. Preston Payne doubled to score two runs.

Hunter Howe walked and was followed by a RBI ground outs from Matt Safley and Jace Brown to score two more. Howe would score on a wild pitch to make the score 5-6. Green City would extend their lead back out with one run in the forth inning and three more in the fifth 5-10. The Bulldogs would again return serve in the bottom of the fifth. Brown singled an Tanner Riggins walked, Belt singled to load them up for Slaughter.

Slaughter reached to score one run followed my Smith who singled to send

home two more. Davison drove home another run with a single to move the Bulldogs to within one 9-10. In the final inning the Gophers looked like they had put the game out of reach scoring two to lead 12-9. The Bulldogs showed fire in their guts in the bottom of the inning.

Davison reached base with two outs.

Payne and Howe singled to load the bases yet again. Safley single to score two runs and Brown single to tie the game at twelve all. The game went into extra innings and remained scoreless until the ninth when the Gophers took the lead by one. In the bottom of the inning the Bulldogs would come back one more time. Davison walked, Howe single and Safley walked to load the bases again for the Bulldogs. Tanner Riggins tied the game with a single and Howe scored by an error. The Bulldogs had battled back all night and took their first lead when it matter most winning 14-13.

The Brashear Tigers hosted Putnam County Midgets on Friday May 9th.

The Midgets would score a single run in the first inning to take a early lead.

In the bottom of the second inning the Tigers would tie things up at one all. Luke Baker was hit by a pitch, he would later score on a RBI ground out

by Sam Smith. Putnam County would score three in the top of the third inning to lead 1-4. Brashear would rally again in the bottom of the inning. Jacob Bleything walked and would score on a single to left by Baker making it 2-4. The Midgets would score five in the fifth to hold a 2-9 lead. The Tigers would not be able to mount another rally and take the loss 2-9.

They play at Atlanta on Monday night and return home to face Schuyler County on Tuesday.

This past Saturday Fifteen High School track teams converged at the La Plata Sports Complex for the Class One District Two Track meet. The Atlanta Hornets played the most important game of the Spring Baseball season up to this point last Monday Night against Cairo. It was time to answer on the field who was the best team in Class One in the state of Missouri. The Hornets have been dominating all season behind pitching, defense and timely hitting.

The Hornets looked to continue the undefeated season with their best test yet against Cairo. The Hornets answered the call. “Atlanta Defeats Cairo 1-0 behind a Strong pitching performance by Garrett West.

The Wildcats hosted the Madison Panthers last Thursday. The Wildcats got down early on a solo home run in the first by the Panthers. The Wildcats however would strike back in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. Seth Shurvington, Andrew Peter and Colby Peukert all doubled to lead off the game and plate the two runs. Madison would come back with four more in the next inning and lead 2-5.

That score would hold until the bottom of the fourth when the Wildcats would score two more to get within one of the Panthers. Caleb Richardson and Tony Humphreys reached

base and both would score on a double by Luke Long. Madison would answer yet again with a run in the next half inning to push their lead to 4-6. In the bottom of the Fifth the Wildcats were able to take the lead back from the Panthers. Shurvington singled and was sent home on a double by Peter. Peukert would follow with a single to score Peter and tie the game. Richardson would single to advance Peukert, who would then score on a RBI ground out by Humphreys. The Wildcats held the lead going into the last inning but would surrender the loan run the Panthers needed to tie the game at

7-7. In the top of the eighth the game would unravel for the Cats. Madison would score five runs in the inning and hold a commanding 7-12 lead.

The Wildcats could not recover and dropped a heart breaker.The Wildcats would conclude the week with a road trip to Purdin to face the Linn County Mustangs on Thursday. The Wildcats would rebound and take back home a hard fought victory over the Mustangs 9-7. This week the Wildcats conclude the Spring Season with a trip on Monday to battle North Shelby.

The BMC Raiders took to the road on Tuesday to face the Southwest Wildcats at Ludlow. The game would remain scoreless until the third inning. The Raiders would plate three and take a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats would score one in the fourth inning to close within two runs of BMC. The Raiders would drop the hammer on the Wildcats in the sixth and seventh innings scoring seven more.

Armed Forces Day - A Tribute to Military

Armed Forces Day was established by Presidential Proclamation on February 27, 1950 and is celebrated on the 3rd Saturday in May. This day is seen as an opportunity to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. These forces include the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

In 1947, the Army, Navy, and Air Force were brought together under the newly established Department of Defense. Then in 1949, an announcement was made to combine Army Day, Navy Day, and Air Force Day in order to celebrate as one, just as they had been consolidated under the Department of Defense.

In the Presidential Proclamation creating this day on February 27, 1950, believing that a unified force was vital to the security of our nation as well as to the establishment of peace, President Harry S. Truman declared: Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the

first combined demonstration of America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense.

The first Armed Forces Day was a way to educate the public and their understanding of the role of the Armed Forces in civilian life. It was also an opportunity to show state-of-the-art equipment that helped protect the civilians. And, it was a way to pay honor to the men and women of the United States military.

The theme of that first day of celebration was “Teamed for Defense”. Through the years a number of themes have been used: - Protectors of Freedom - Special Opportunity for Thanks - Prepared to Meet the Challenge -Dedication & Devotion - Patriotism

It was on this day in 1775 that the Continental Navy was formed.

In addition, the U.S. Marine Corps continues to celebrate USMC Day on November 10th. This was the day during the Revolutionary War that the Continental Congress authorized the creation of the Continental Marines in 1775.

Beware of Publishers Clearing House Scams from Jamaica!

People need to read this.

Louise Gaughn, in our own community, was recently contacted and, God Bless her, she politely declined because she was informed.

I did a little research and this is what I found out.

-Randy Bunch Reports of Publishers Clearing House Scams from Jamaica are on the rise. These are not from the REAL Publishers Clearing House.

The Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes integrity is the cornerstone of their business. As such, they want to make sure that all consumers are protected from scams fraudulently pretending to be associated with their wellrecognized PCH name.

I would like to warn you about a rise in sweepstakes scams pouring in from Jamaica, dangling the prospects of huge winnings, many of which are illegally using the Publishers Clearing House name.

There is a catch in these scams–you will be told all you have to do is send or wire money to claim the bogus prize. DONT FALL FOR THIS! Be warned that anyone asking for payment of any type in order to claim a sweepstakes

prize is a SCAMMER! Legitimate sweepstakes are free and no purchase is ever necessary to enter or win a prize–that is the law!

Publishers Clearing House never ask for money to present a prize and our ‘no purchase necessary’ message is prominently displayed in all of their promotional mailers.

Here is generally how the Jamaican Publishers Clearing House scam starts: Scammers inform their targets they have won a sweepstakes prize but first need to make some type of payment to obtain the prize.

Scammers often use the name of PCH or some other well-recognized, trusted brand. The scammers build trust and rapport with their targets. But payments only lead to more requests for money. Jamaican scammers may call you on the phone, send you an email or mail you a letter (sometimes with a fake check enclosed).

Whatever the method of contact, the scam is always to try and get you to part with your hard-earned money.

US Government officials, the US Postal Inspection Service, police and

law enforcement agencies around the country, as well as The Federal Trade Commission are all working together to combat the rise in scams coming out of Jamaica.

It is a difficult and hard task as these cross-border, trans-national scams are among the hardest crimes to investigate and prosecute as there is no face-toface interaction.

Here are some final tips to protect you from these Jamaican based Publishers Clearing House scams: •Beware of any unsolicited call that may come from the Jamaican area code of 876 and includes an offer that sounds too good to be true. Hang up the phone!

•If you are asked to send or wire money for any reason whatsoever to claim a prize - DONT! It is a SCAM! At Publishers Clearing House we NEVER ASK FOR MONEY to be sent to claim a prize.

•Publishers Clearing House major prizes of $10,000 or more are awarded in person, unannounced, by our famous Prize Patrol, or through notice in a certified letter.

They DO NOT call our winners ahead of time.

The Reality Of 500 Fewer Fatalities by Sergeant Brent J. Bernhardt Fatalities are final ... irreversible ... forever. Over the past several years, Missouri has experienced a decrease in traffic fatalities.

In 2006, 1,257 people died in traffic crashes, where in 2013, 757 people died in traffic crashes. A simple math problem shows us there is a difference of 500 deaths between those two years ... or, more to the point: 500 people are alive today who wouldn’t have been in 2006. That’s the equivalent of the entire town of Atlanta, MO. So far, we have seen a nine percent increase in

fatalities in 2014. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is asking every driver to make a conscious decision to help lower that number by being safe drivers. Driving is a full-time activity requiring you to make smart decisions. Please do not speed, pay attention while you’re driving, don’t drink and drive, and make sure you and everyone in your vehicle are wearing a seat belt. Make the effort to follow traffic laws or if necessary, refresh yourself as to what they are.

sult of human error and can be prevented. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is doing its part to make our roadways safer.

Troopers are enforcing traffic laws every day, taking part in special enforcement operations, issuing citations, making arrests, and removing impaired drivers. Make a choice to make 2014 a good year for driving on Missouri’s roadways.

•While we believe that revenue estimates will fall well short of what the governor predicted, it makes sense to allocate any potential additional revenue to education and one-time capital projects.

•Between General Revenue and the Surplus Revenue Fund the House budget proposal spends the exact same dollar amount that the Governor used in the Foundation Formula, $278m.

•This budget would also fully fund A+ Scholarships and a 15% increase in Access Missouri Scholarships.

•This budget would fully fund the Bright Flight Scholarship Program and pending legislation (HB1308) could allow these Bright Flight dollars to be used for a loan forgiveness program that would keep our best and brightest students here in

Missouri.

•A $15 million dollar increase to Access Missouri Scholarship Program will help provide access to higher education to thousands more Missourians.

•The General Assembly was able to pass funding to rebuild the Fulton State Mental Hospital which is the oldest public mental health facility west of the Mississippi River built in 1847.

One other issue that I would like to update you on, which I have received quite a bit of concern and input from 3rd District constituents relates to an aluminum smelter in Southeast Missouri who has recently asked the Public Service Commission (PSC) to shift their energy costs from Ameren Missouri to other consumers.

The company is Noranda Aluminum and it already receives the lowest energy rates in the state; if successful, this bailout plan will shift costs from Noranda Aluminum to other consumers. To see how

I do NOT support subsidizing Noranda with additional energy rate reductions; especially when so many smaller businesses and families are struggling to pay for their own electrical services. In the Arena - 3rd District Legislative Report

The Missouri House of Representatives continues working at a quick pace with now just one week left remaining in the Session. We are scheduled to adjourn at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16th.

Earlier in the week focus continued on the anticipated Veto override of Senate Substitute No. 3 for Senate Committee Substitute for Senate Bills 509 & 496 (SS#3 SCS SBs 509 & 496 - Income Taxation) now referred to as SB 509.

On Tuesday morning with a bi-partisan vote of 109 to 46 the Missouri House of Representatives voted to override Governor Jay Nixon’s earlier veto of SB 509. Earlier, on Monday the Missouri State Senate voted likewise to override the Veto by a vote of 23 to 8.

As I have reported the past three weeks, I supported SB 509 for fair and responsible tax reform.

HB 509 had bi-partisan support in the Missouri House of Representatives.

The keys to the success of this year’s bill were the safeguards it contained combined with the legislature’s commitment to record increased levels of funding for education.

As noted in prior legislative reports, this SB 509 required that revenues would have to increase by at least $150 million each year before each phase of the tax cut is implemented. I continue to emphasize that SB 509; the new tax reform law, will not impair the legislature’s ability to fund education, developmentally disabled and mental health programs.

Please be assured that my commitment for education, the developmentally disabled and for mental health funding remains a top priority and the safeguards contained in HB 509 protects that commitment. The real truth is that SB 509 is a well-crafted tax policy and the new tax reform law is fair and responsible.

No matter what some may try to spin, SB 509 is not a handout to the rich.

It’s a hand up to the middle class and to all Missourians, which is why C Y

agriculture and business groups lined up in support of SB 509. The groups who supported SB 509, which I respect and listen to are the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), Associated Industries of Missouri (AIM), Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Missouri Association of CPAs, Missouri Retailers Association, Missouri Realtors Association, Missouri Restaurant Association, Missouri Poultry Federation, Missouri Egg Council, Missouri Pork Association, Missouri Grocers Association, Missouri Dairy Association, and the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association. Besides all of the farmers and agriculture interest in the 3rd District, there are 1,461 Businesses and thousands of their employees who will benefit from the passage of SB 509.

The Facts on SB 509 SB 509 will responsibly cut the tax burden on Missouri families and businesses by $620 million annually while also safeguarding funding to vital state services such as education.

•Individual Income Taxes: •SB 509 reduces individual income taxes by one half percent over a period of five years beginning in 2017 •Small business income tax deduction: •Beginning in 2017 small businesses will be allowed to deduct a maximum of 25 percent of business income over a period of no less than 5 years •This tax cut is specifically structured to ease the tax burden for small businesses •Small businesses make up more than 90 percent of our employers in the state, and this tax cut is specifically tailored to allow those employers to thrive and grow •Tax cut for low-income Missourians: •SB 509 will increase the personal income tax exemption amount by $500 for those whose adjusted gross income is less than $20,000 •The tax benefits of SB 509 are triggered when the M K

SB 509 was a pro-jobs bill that incentivizes growth and puts money back into the tax payers hands so they can decide how to spend it. In conclusion, HB 509 is responsible and is reasonable tax reform.

Well everyone we finally got a good dose of summer and I am so happy. I love good old hot summer weather. I am so glad to be able to be outside in my yard and garden. I do hope all of you are enjoying it.

Last Wednesday, and Thursday I painted 2 rooms upstairs, I painted my bathroom and the sitting room a beautiful light green. Kenny helped me to move some of the stuff out of my bath. I admit I have a lot of creams, lotions, perfumes, and lots of bubble bath and of course all kinds of hair stuff. Kenny helped me to move some of this stuff out but he gave up and went to walk the dogs. I am just so glad I got it all done and everything cleaned and put away.

Thursday night I went to supper and to the movies with my daughter Laura and granddaughter Katherine. We saw “Heaven is For Real” it is a wonderful movie. I had read the book and wanted to see the movie. Someone asked me if it convinced me Heaven

is real. Well I have always known Heaven is real. I really liked the movie but to me Heaven has always been real.

I had my granddaughters Norma and Bella Wood this morning. I loved walking them to school. It brought back great memories of when my kids were in school. I was also a great morning for a walk.

Kenny and I worked outside all day today. We planted tomatoes, did some weeding, cleaned the front porch and the patio and just enjoyed the day. It was the perfect day.

My friend Carolyn Hill was planting tomatoes when I talked to her. All of my neighbors were out working today.

Tonight I went to the Senior Center to play cards.

This is truly a fun evening and if you want a fun night come play cards with us.

I am off again tomorrow and plan to spend most of the day outside. I pray all of you have a wonderful week and get out in this great weather. Patty

The staff and administration of Heartland Christian College hosted their annual Friends of the College banquet on Monday, May 5th. The Ozark Steakhouse provided a delicious meal served by members of the college student body. A team of alumni and current students then opened the evening’s program with worship.

President Kris Palmer welcomed the guests, and Administrative Dean David Barton spoke about

the school’s vision for international students. The college has been working several years toward their goal of accreditation, and they have now reached a place where international students can obtain visas to come study here. In his other role as the Missions Director of the church, Mr. Barton visits seven or eight nations each year.

In each of those places, he finds young people eager to come here for training and then go back to make

a difference in their own countries.

These are exciting days with the first students already starting the admissions process. We know we can have a bigger impact on the world by training these future leaders than by anything else we might do. We are eager to see where seeds may be scattered around the world from this school in the middle of a cornfield

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces that from May 19, 2014, throughMay 31, 2014, Troop B officers will be conducting a “Click It Or Ticket” enforcement operation in Marion County.

The enforcement operation is part of a national campaign focusing on seat belt violations in an effort to raise seat belt use and awareness.

Sometimes following this operation, representatives of the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Division will conduct a seat belt survey in Marion County and other selected counties in the state. During last year’s seat belt survey, the Missouri usage rate for all vehicles was 80%, which is below the national average of 86%.

During this enforcement effort, the Missouri State Highway Patrol will

continue its zero tolerance enforcement stance in an effort to raise seat belt awareness and compliance. Motorists are reminded that every driver and front seat occupant of a passenger vehicle and all occupants less than 16 years of age are required to be secured in a properly fastened and adjusted safety belt or child restraint seat. Children less than four years old are required to be in an approved child restraint seat. Children ages four to seven years old, and who weigh at least 40 pounds, but less than 80 pounds, and are less than 4’9” tall, must be secured in a child passenger restraint system or booster seat appropriate for that child. Persons under 18 years of age operating or riding in a truck must wear a safety belt, regardless of the truck’s licensed gross weight.

Any driver who falls under the guidelines of a

Missouri graduated driver’s license and their passengers are required to wear a safety belt, regardless of age or vehicle type.

“Special enforcement operations such as these are very important and effective,” states Captain Wilt.

“Part of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s mission is to reduce injuries and fatalities on our roadways.

We know many lives could be saved if more people took a few extra seconds to buckle their seat belt.”

In support of “The Drive To ZERO Highway Deaths,” the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.

Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket.

The Macon Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 602 S. Missouri Street on May 9th at 11:24 p.m. with 12 firefighters, 2 fire trucks and one service company vehicle. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was coming from the house and fire was visible from the south side of the house.

The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters and brought under control at 11:47 p.m. There was ex-

tensive fire damage to the room where the fire was found and heavy heat and smoke damage to the rest of the house. It is believed at this time that the cause of the fire is accidental. All fire department units were clear of the scene by 1:51 a.m.

Two firefighters were treated for heat related symptoms by the Macon County Ambulance District and released at the

scene.

The home owner was taken by the ambulance crew for injuries and later left with a friend. She later was released from the ambulance crew and left the scene with a friend.

The fire department was assisted by the Macon Police Department, Macon County Ambulance District, and Macon Municipal Utilities.

So, when a senior (or others for that matter) look for coverage, it is important to note that getting a little more coverage than originally decided can save you a lot of money in the long run and since seniors tend to pay more per $1,000 of coverage because of their age, then breakpoints discounts can be much more significant than for younger people.

The length of coverage needed: Unfortunately, this point is also often misunderstood or not considered at all. It is by far cheaper to get a 10 year term life insurance plan than a 20 year term plan.

Universal life and whole life with their long term rate guarantees are even priced higher. Does that mean that, for the sake of money saving, all seniors should get a 10 year term.

Not at all! The selection of the plan should be basically based on need and budget.

Need – If the need is for 20 years of coverage, getting a 10 year plan may save you money at the beginning but, since rates after 10 years will likely go up so high that they may become unaffordable, the individual senior may need to cancel their 10 year term and have no coverage for the following 10 years. So, try to get the plan length you need from the beginning.

Budget – The senior’s budget is also very important. As we said above one should try to get the plan that works for their planned needs but what happens if that plan is not affordable. Then, by all means, do not do that. The point here is that if you get the plan you need but need to cancel it a few months down the road because it is no longer affordable, then you have lost everything.

If for reason of budget you cannot get the plan you need, you should make sure that it is convertible.

a 20 year term plan but can only afford a 10 year plan, see that the 10 year term is convertible to a good whole life or universal life (long term plans) so that you have at least this option available in case, for health reason or others, you cannot get a 20 year plan later.

Since the above can be very influential in the final rate you pay, make sure that, to keep your insurance affordable, you select a plan that is as close as possible to the length of coverage you need and yet still remains affordable.

The health of the individual senior: This factor seems to be one that most seniors are aware of when shopping for coverage. If your health is perfect, then keeping your insurance affordable should not be a problem.

People with great health usually have access to super lower ratings such as preferred plus and so on.

But what happens if your health has not been so great, can you still get an affordable plan? It may take more work but yes.

What it really comes down to is that you need to shop to more insurance companies and ask more questions. Never assume that term is always cheaper in cases where your health is not so good. We have seen many whole life plans that came out cheaper than term life. And doing an insurance exam is also not always the best route to follow. Many simplified whole life plans still offer good rates and very basic underwriting. In some situations, you may only have to answer a few questions to get an approval.

Regardless of which plan you select, please make sure to always ask a lot of questions and shop with, at least, three insurance companies and/or brokers. Once you receive your new approved policy, review it carefully. Bottom line is, you are responsible for your final decision so do your homework before and after you receive your new life insurance policy.

La Plata FFA 2nd Annual Awards & Recognition Banquet La Plata FFA Chapter hosted the 2nd Annual Award and Recognition banquet on April 30th in the Elementary Gym. President, Hunter Howe opened the meeting with Jeana Noel, Vice-President called roll of the officers.

The chapter presented slideshow highlighting the year’s activities throughout the meal. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to parents and guests supporting the program. Makala Sherman presented the creed to members and guests.

FFA Members were recognized for their par-

ticipation in Leadership Development Events and Career Development Events throughout the year. Missouri Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Chairman present Jr and Sr Career Development Event Participants with Industry Recognize Credential Certificates. Greenhand and Chapter Degree members were presented with certificates of completion. Andy and Bob Jackson and Mr. Steve Safley were presented Honorary Chapter Degree’s for their service and dedication to the La Plata FFA Chapter.

Makala Sherman was awarded Star Greenhand, Grant Gregory was award-

ed Star Chapter Farmer, Baylon Belt was awarded Star in Agribusiness and Drew Magers was awarded Star in Placement, Outstanding Junior Jeana Noel and Outstanding Senior LaDonna White. Seniors were recognized for their dedication and commitment to the FFA Chapter and 2014-2015 Chapter officers were installed.

2014-2015 officers include; President Jeana Noel, 1st Vice President Matt Safley, 2nd Vice President, Secretary Makala Sherman, Treasurer Molly West, Reporter Tristan Borron, Sentinel Ben Bolden and Chaplin Alexis Allen.

Students Receive Technical Skills Certificates High school students enrolled in agriculture education courses have the unique opportunity to go beyond the classroom and learn real-world applications in a number of disciplines. Whether it is in agricultural mechanics, livestock evaluation, or a dozen other areas of learning, the new Missouri Agricultural Skills and Knowledge Assessment (MOASK) Industry Recognized Credential recognizes students performing at a proficient level as determined by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

LaPlata R2 FFA Advisor, Jessy Reuterdahl joined Drew Lock, Missouri Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Chairman, in presenting the MOASK certificates.

The technical skills assessments are conducted much like FFA judging events, but the results are used to determine a student’s proficiency and not for competitive award purposes. The program compliments the three circle model for delivering agricultural education in schools. The circles represent learning in the classroom, leadership development through the FFA and hands on training through each student’s Supervised Agricultural Experience.

had an active Macon County warrant. A further investigation resulted in the discovery of drug paraphernalia and synthetic

cannabinoids. The illegal contraband was found in the suspect’s vehicle and on Jefferies person. The Macon County Sheriff ’s

Office was assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol K-9 Unit during the traffic stop.

Sheriff’s Report

On May 6, 2014, at approximately 4:09 p.m., Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies arrested 63 year old Richard E. Stonecipher of Macon, Missouri, for driving while intoxicated.

The arrest was a result of an investigation conducted a during traffic stop in Macon, Missouri. Stonecipher was issued a sum-

mons for a court appearance and later released.

On May 8, 2014, at approximately 05:55 a.m., Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies arrested 26 year old Michael R. Boone of Bevier, Missouri, for an active Macon County warrant, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and possession of synthetic cannabi-

noid. Also arrested was 22 year old Megan L. Jefferies of Macon, Missouri, for unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and possession of synthetic cannabinoid.

The arrest was a result of a traffic stop near Macon, Missouri.

During the traffic stop, deputies learned the operator; Michael R. Boone

National Mental Health Awareness Month As families in Missouri and nationwide mark National Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m fighting to ensure all Americans have access to quality behavioral health treatments. We must start treating mental illness like any other physical illness.

We were reminded of this important challenge last month at Fort Hood. In the wake of this tragedy, I’m talking with military leaders in Missouri and in Washington to guarantee our servicemen and

women, veterans, and military families have access to quality behavioral health treatment - before a mental health crisis takes a terrible turn for the worst.

As part of these efforts, I introduced the “Caring for America’s Heroes Act” last week to bring mental health treatment for military retirees and families in-line with the way physical injuries are treated under TRICARE. This is a common-sense step forward as we work to reduce the stigma surrounding

behavioral health challenges.

I also joined my colleague Senator Stabenow to successfully pass a version of the “Excellence in Mental Health Act” last month to help address the nation’s fragmented mental health system.

Good Courage Some people I love are hurting. My heart is heavy.

I want to help them, but there is so little I can do.

I am seriously praying for them. My pain is great, and theirs must be many times worse.

Pain in one’s body is unpleasant; but heart pain— emotional pain—is much worse. I try to keep busy to keep my mind occupied; but even then, the pain slips in. I try to sleep and make it all go away, but I awaken to find my mind has been dwelling on it even in my sleep.

I genuinely believe God will hear my prayers and bring good to all of us again; but until He does, life is heavy. I try to rush God; but His timetable and mine are seldom the same. My wife and I went to dinner with some good friends. While we dined, our hearts relaxed some.

Good friends make that happen.

he prophet Isaiah was suffering similarly when he prayed this prayer, “Come down, Lord. Oh, that you would burst from the heavens and come down! . . . When you came down long ago, you did awesome deeds beyond our highest expectations.

And, oh, how the mountains quaked! For since the world began, no ear has heard and no eye has seen a God like you, who works for those who wait for Him!” (Isaiah 64:1–4) The prophet said God works (does good) for those who wait on Him. Waiting is hard. I have never been good at it. The agony of waiting is what I am experiencing now. Therefore, I am claiming the promise of the Psalmist, “Wait on the lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord.” (Psalm 27:14) I am waiting. I pray God will give me “good courage”.

LILLIE MAE MATHES February 12, 1939 - May 4, 2014

Joyce Raymer, 76, of LaPlata, MO, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014. She was born on April 7, 1938. Joyce is survived by three children; Vicky Wood; Chris Raymer; Chuck Raymer; eleven grandchildren; fifteen greatgrandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Charles “Chuck” Raymer, one sister, Joni, and two brothers, Jon and Lawrence. Funeral services were Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Hutton and McElwain Funeral Home in Macon. Burial was in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville. Visitation was Monday evening at the funeral home.

C Noel R. Crawford August 2, 1934 - May 8, 2014 Noel R. Crawford, age 79 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014. Born August 2, 1934. He married Wanda L. Billings, who survives. Also surviving is one son, Kyle Crawford; two daughters, Kimbra Kelley, and Krista Cochran; two sisters, Marjorie Eitel and Marilyn Cannaday; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jean, Gerald, and Bob Crawford; one son-in-law, Mark Kelley; and one grandson, Blake Crawford. Graveside service with military honors was Sunday, May 11, 2014 in the La Plata Cemetery. It was Noel’s wishes to be cremated.

The whippoorwills are singing... what a renewal of life with baby lambs, calves and kittens. Donna Seibold attended the Daughters of American Revolution Ann Haynes Chapter meeting Friday at Kirksville. Their speaker was Doris Fountain, who gave a program on arthritic exercise.

Richard and Sharron Burns attended the La Plata Dram Club’s presentation of “High Spirits” dinner theater Saturday evening at La Plata High School. Students did a really great job!

Todd Gray visited his parents, Donna and Jerry Gray, this week.

Lillie Mae (Curtis) Mathes, age 75, of La Plata, Missouri passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Missouri. Born February 12, 1939 in Adair County, Missouri, she was the daughter of Ray and Madge (Tuttle) Curtis.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Travis Mathes; four brothers, Harlen, Junior, Leon and Wendell Curtis; and one sister,

Aline Young.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Sandra Mathes of Macon, Missouri; one brother and sister-in-law Jack and Veva Curtis of Ewing, Missouri; one sister, Wilma Chipman of Ewing, Missouri; four grandchildren, Alexandra, Bubba, Jimmy and Zachary Mathes; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mae was a graduate of Kirksville High School. She owned and operated a beauty salon in La Plata for many years. She was a member of the La Plata Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. in Kirksville. Mae enjoyed quilting and spending time with her family.

Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri.

Officiating will be Pastor David Gottman.

Burial was at the La Plata Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gail Curtis, Joe Curtis, Todd Eitel, Jeff Curtis, Frank Curtis, and Jeremy Curtis.

Visitation was Friday, May 9, 2014 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata.

14, 2014 8B May Wednesday Signs of Hearing Loss in Children and Adults 36 Million American Adults Report Hearing Problems; 1 in 5 Teenagers Suffer From Hearing Loss With hearing loss affecting 36 million American adults and spiking in younger populations in recent years, May’s Better Hearing and Speech Month is the ideal time for parents, spouses, and the general public to learn how to recognize the early signs of hearing problems.

(City)-based audiologist (name) is encouraging people to educate themselves about the signs and available treatment options through the Identify the Signs campaign, a national effort of the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association (ASHA). The campaign is designed to combat an overall lack of awareness about hearing as well as speech/language disorders—a major barrier to treatment.

Hearing loss is a significant and growing public health issue—for people of all ages. Though 36 million adults suffer, only 1 out of 5 people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wears one. Approximately 15% (26 million) Americans between the ages of

20 and 69 have high frequency hearing loss due to exposure to loud sounds or noise at work or in leisure activities. One in 5 kids ages 12–19 is suffering from hearing loss, an increase of 31% since the late 1980s/early 1990s.

This is a trend that coincides with skyrocketing use of personal audio technology.

Hearing loss can be present at birth or acquired.

Although newborn hearing screening is widespread in the United States, hearing issues may develop after children leave the hospital. They also may result from ear infections, other illnesses such as chicken pox or influenza, head injury, or noise exposure. Therefore, parents should be attuned to the early signs of hearing loss even if their child passes a newborn hearing screening in the hospital.

“As an ASHA member and certified audiologist, I see patients every day who are benefitting enormously from treatment. Unfortunately, a large majority of them have needlessly suffered by waiting far too long to seek help—which is why the Identify the Signs campaign is so important,”

“As May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, I suggest all people familiarize themselves with these signs at IdentifytheSigns. org and seek a hearing assessment from an audiologist if they have a question about their hearing or a loved one’s hearing. Treatment is often easier and more effective than people think.”

Left untreated, hearing loss in children can have a negative impact on their speech and language development, communication, and learning. This can impact social success, academic development, and future vocational choices. In adults, untreated hearing loss is tied to social isolation, depression, early exit from the workforce, and an overall reduced quality of life. New research also has found a strong link between degree of hearing loss and risk of developing dementia.

In children, parents should watch for the following signs of hearing loss: • Lack of attention to sounds • Failure to follow simple directions

• Failure to respond when his/her name is called • Delays in speech and language development • Pulling or scratching at his/her ears • Difficulty achieving academically, especially in reading and math • Social isolation and feeling unhappy in school • 8 Persistent ear discomfort after exposure to loud noise (regular and constant listening to electronics at high volumes) In adults, signs of hearing loss include: • Inattentiveness • Buzzing or ringing in the ears • Failure to respond to spoken words • Muffled hearing • Constant frustration hearing speech and other sounds • Avoiding conversation • Social isolation • Depression For more signs, treatment information, and other resources, visit http://identifythesigns.org. EXTENSION”S 100th BIRTHDAY This week (May 8th actually) University Extension will celebrate its 100th anniversary. It began in 1914 and has been helping people throughout the United State ever since that time.

For those of you that are younger (and no I have not been around for even ½ of those 100 years), here are some things that Extension has done to improve citizen’s lives. Hopefully many of you are aware of the 4-H Youth program that is part of Extension and is available to kids ages 5 to 18 that teach leadership, learning, how to care for animals, how to conduct meetings and other important things.

The Human Environmental Sciences portion of Extension helps teach healthy foods and lifestyles, family finances and budgeting, parenting skills and relationships among others.

Community development and business assistance are also part of University Extension and they can assist with community problems and issues and help individual businesses in almost anything you can

think of. I have discussed our continuing education programs a couple of weeks ago so won’t do that again.

Agricultural education has been the longest piece of Extension and continues to be important today.

We provide classes in estate planning, farm leases, animal nutrition and care, gardening issues and others. Individual assistance is available on plant or livestock problems, fence issues and others. Prayer was given by Gary Smith.

Dana Miller was the only birthday for this month.

Present were Todd McClaskey, Marvin Seidt, John and Debie Becker, Rich and Sharron Burns, Lee and Linda Moots, Shirley and Gary Smith, Duane and Peggy Turner, Gary Clarkson, Diane and Frank Scott.

The District executive of Boy Scouts of America, Scott Meredith, spoke to the group.

Also present were Russ Orgill, Joe Ruppel, Time Powell, Tabitha Mitchell and Misty Orgil.
