Macon County’s largest Easter egg hunt was held at Atterberry Park in Atlanta on Saturday, April 19, 2014. Children of all ages were invited to attend including teenagers and adults. The event was sponsored by Church WithOut Walls Ministries.

More than 5,000 eggs and goody bags were be picked up throughout the city’s park and Marsh Park’s enclosed toddler

area by the 203 students registered in attendance. This free outreach event also included a hot dog lunch for the children and families.

Two bicycles were given away as grand prizes for the event donated by Wal-Mart. Winners included Drake Miller of Sedalia and Renee Wehner of Atlanta. Macon Cinema provided eight free movie passes.

In addition, there was a di-

vision for teenagers including prizes like iTunes cards.

An “adult division” also took place: Parents and supporters of the younger hunters competed for gas cards prizes.

Families brought rolls of toilet paper for the ministry’s “On A Roll” toilet paper drive to assist the emergency food pantry in Macon. The ministry’s goal was to collect more than 200 rolls.

Local teens and adults assisted with the event and packed and scattered eggs for the kids; volunteers also served 300 hotdogs after the race. The event is an annual opportunity to pray with local families and explain the importance of the resurrection.

The event was organized by Kim Moore.

Velocity 12u Fastpitch won first place in the USSSA Early Bird Tournament 12u Division held in Columbia, MO on April 12-13, 2014. The team had an undefeated weekend to win the championship. They scored 38 runs with a team batting average of .450.

They allowed 3 runs with an opponent batting average of .143.

On a busy day at the State Capitol, high school students from across the state met with their legislators April 3 during Missouri Farm Bureau’s 20th annual Youth Leadership Day, sponsored by the organization’s Promotion and Education Program.

With both houses in ses-

sion at the time, many students had an opportunity to visit with their representatives and senators just outside the chamber doors and then view them in action from the House and Senate galleries.

Returning from the Capitol building, the students spent their afternoon at

the Missouri Farm Bureau Center. Recently appointed Missouri Director of Agriculture Richard Fordyce spoke to the group about the department’s priorities. He said one of their top priorities is helping young people involved in agriculture. “It’s important that you learn, stay

I would like to express my appreciation to the voters of the City of La Plata for their trust in electing me the Mayor for the next two years. I take this position very seriously and want to keep the citizens informed about the happenings in the City.

During the April 15th council meeting, David Johnson was appointed to the La Plata Cemetery Board. In talking with Randy Travis, President of the La Plata Cemetery Board, he informed me that Steven Shott of Bevier and his crew has been hired to mow the cemetery

during this season at a rate of $800.00 per mowing.

They have already mowed once and spent three days cleaning up the cemetery, mowing, and trimming.

Other members of the board are Randy Bunch and Stan East and there is currently one other position available to complete the board of five members.

Anyone interested in filling the position may contact Randy or myself.

Matt Combes was appointed to fill my vacancy on the La Plata Park and Recreation Board. Matt will be a great asset to the board since he is an employee of the Missouri Department of Conservation. Other members of the nine member board are President Jason Bunch, Secretary Peggy Mohan, Tyler Hagar, Tyler Roberts, Gracie Roberts, Julie Lewis, Kerry Green, and Randy Dore. A new mower has been purchased by the La Plata Parks & Recreation Board to be used by the city employees to

maintain city park properties.

The Park & Recreation Board is currently making plans to assemble the new playground equipment that was previously purchased with funds from the Elizabeth Carpenter Memorial Fund. Ground breaking was held on Saturday, April 12th for the construction of the new concrete public restrooms that will be located in the southeast corner of the City Park. Alderman Trent Perry and city employee Greg Tuggle donated their time on Saturday and the project will be completed by volunteers. The funding for the project is being acquired from a grant in the amount of $12,688.69 that was written by City Clerk Bobbie Jacques and Alderman Perry and submitted to Macon County Economic Development. The two handicap bathrooms will be open year round and the other units will be open during events.

George Hansen, La Plata Golf Course manager, was in attendance to discuss the future replacement of two of the bridges that link the golf course over the creek. The current wood plank bridges were constructed in 1991 and will be replaced with steel/iron bridges. It is estimated that each bridge will cost approximately $2,500.00.

One of the bridges is being donated by the family of the late J.W. Bragg and the other bridge will be financed in part by the La Plata Men’s Golf Association and any other donations would be greatly appreciated.

Previously the City of La Plata started charging a $30.00 fee per load of gravel hauled to a residence. After discussing the issue, the council removed the fee except for requests made by contractors.

Utility raises are always a hard decision to make but due to the fact that Adair County Public Water District raised our cost by 10 percent the council had no choice but to raise the rates. Based on an average household usage of 5,000 gallons, the old rate would have been $53.39 and the new rate will be $58.72 for a monthly increase of $5.33.

Costs for the school trip are underwritten by county Farm Bureaus and the MFB Foundation for Agriculture. More than 400 students and chaperons attended the event.

The City of La Plata is excited about the implementation of a City of La Plata Animal Shelter which will be located at the water department building for the purpose of housing animals that are running at large. If the animals are not claimed by their owner they will be offered for adoption. In order to recoup some of the monies required to establish the animal shelter, the City will re-implement the issuance of dog/cat tags at a fee of $20 for the lifetime of the animal.

Tyler Hagar is planning at least two tractor/truck pulls to be held on Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. He will be building a track for the events on City property located at the City Water Department building. These events will be held under the sponsorship of the La Plata Promotional Committee to help finance the annual Labor Day events.

Each year the City of La Plata is required to provide its customers with a report regarding the quality of our water supply. In the past, the reports have either been mailed or published in the newspaper.

In order to cut costs, DNR has given the city permission to attach a sticker to the utility bills listing the website where the report may be viewed. The current year CCR for the City of La Plata is now available by accessing www.dnr. mo.gov/ccr/mo2010451. pdf. For those who do not have internet access and would like a paper copy, they may stop by City Hall or call Debbie at 660-3327166.

The next regular meeting of the La Plata City Council will be held on Tuesday, May 13th at 6:00 p.m. in the council chambers.

Tuesday, April 15, 2014 Did you notice that awful date above? April 15.....

If you are young and have children you get a big refund back in February, but if you are older and all your kids are grown you send the IRS a check on this date.

I am doing my article a day early as I am headed to Columbia tomorrow morning. I have to go to University Hospital for test to see how my medicine is doing. Then I go back Thursday for a conference with the doctor. I must say I am looking forward to Wednesday night.

I am staying with my granddaughter Aimee and her family. I know we will have a great time for what time I am there.

This Sunday was a truly great day. I went to Sunday

School and church with my Granddaughter Norma Wood. We had a wonderful morning of worship at our local Church.

Norma especially loves the singing.

Sunday afternoon Kenny and I went to Atlanta to spend the afternoon with our daughter Bonnie and our son-in-law John. John is the owner of McMurry Studios and we had a great time seeing all of John’s new artwork. He is an exceptional photographer and has beautiful work to show us. Bonnie is a wonderful cook and we were treated to a wonderful lunch. After we ate we had a tour of all the great gardens Bonnie and John have blooming. It was a very nice day. Praying you have a good week. Patty

Ron Watson met with the Commission to request gravel for Empire Street prior to a sale to be held on Wednesday the 19th. Shannon Howe and Beth Moots with Benton and Associates brought in paperwork to begin a bridge contract.

Commission Dwiggins left for the afternoon due to illness. No quorum, no further action taken. Commission Wyatt remained to meet with patrons.

HELEN LORENE JOHNSON, age 86, passed away on April 13, 2014 in Macon, Missouri. She was born on November 8, 1927. She is survived by her husband, Clyde W. Johnson; her daughters, Carmen Duncan and Marilyn Loy; one grandson, two sisters, as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were April 22, 2014. Burial was in New Cambria Cemetery in New Cambria, Missouri. Visitation was at Hutton and McElwain Funeral Home in Macon.

THELMA GERTRUDE WALKER, age 89 of Bucklin, died April 15, 2014 in Bucklin. Thelma was born on December 12, 1924. She is survived by her husband Edward Walker, four sons, Edward Louis Schneiderheinze; Ronald Eugene Schneiderheinze; Douglas Dean Schneiderheinze and Michael Dale Schneiderheinze, ; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were Friday, April 18, 2014 at Delaney Funeral Home in Bucklin. Burial was in the Cash Cemetery north west of New Cambria. Visitation was held Friday at the funeral home in Bucklin.

CLARA ELIZABETH ASHENFELTER, 87, passed away on Friday, April 18, 2014, Macon, MO. She was born on December 13, 1926. Clara is survived by seven children; Troy, David Ashenfelter, Audrey Clark, Darrell Ashenfelter, Dennis Ashenfelter, Debby Essen, Rodney Ashenfelter, several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws. Arrangements are under the direction of Hutton and McElwain Funeral Home in Macon.

ROSIE MARIE SANDNER, 91, passed away April 17, 2014, in Macon. Rosie was born on November 21, 1922. Rosie is survived by her daughter Carol McLin; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, James Sandner, and three sisters, Lucille Kreock, Mary Huston and Lily Heater. Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at the Hutton & McElwain Funeral Home in Macon. Burial will be in the Friendship Cemetery southeast of Macon. Visitation was from 5-7 pm, Tuesday evening, at the funeral home in Macon.

Thank You! Thanks to all who visited, sent cards, flowers or telepone calls while I was in the hospital and most of all for the prayers. I really appreciated every one of them. Thanks for all of the kindness and love shown to my daughters, Marge and Shirley. Since I am recuping at my home, I appreciate all of your help and prayers.

The Macon Tigers returned to action on Wednesday against Centralia. The game had been moved from Tuesday because of wet conditions. On a chilly and windy home diamond the Tigers looked to improve on their 9-1 start. The Tigers jumped out early on with a run in the first and capped the scoring with two more runs in the sixth. Brendan Watts was outstanding on the mound.

He pitched seven strong innings of shutout ball and six strikeouts against the Panthers. Craig Smith went 2-3 with a RBI double and RBI single. The Hornets game Tuesday had first been scheduled at New Cambria but due to wet conditions was moved to Atlanta. The Hornets continued their hot start to the spring campaign. “Atlanta wins 5-1 over Bucklin/Macon Co. in varsity baseball action. The win moves the Hornets to 5-0 on the season. Solid pitching and defense were the keys to the game with Garrett West going 6 strong innings giving up 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 13. Collan Thrasher threw a scoreless 7th retiring all three batters he faced via the strikeout. Ethan Baker was 1-3 with a double and a run scored and Collan thrasher went 2-3 with a HR and 2 RBI’s. Lane Waddle, Marty Halley Trace Johnston, and Chase Wait all added

The Bevier Wildcats game against Salisbury was cancelled on Monday due to Snow! Things got a touch warmer and a little drier on Thursday when they hosted Atlanta. The Wildcats could not shake off the chill; they got behind early and could not make up the slow start against a very good Hornet team. The Hornets were able

to build on the lead as the game progressed and eventually end with a 10-1 Atlanta victory. *stats for the game were not available at press time.

We had a great game vs Atlanta. I feel like my boys have came along way. I told them before the game it would come down to errors and we had a few that really hurt us.

The plan was to come in and pitch Dane through the line up once, unhurt, and set up the third or fourth inning for River. He got through the heart of the line up with no runs scored. Then we had that error-- On dry night, a normal, routinely caught flyball but in the wet M K

grass the shortstop slipped. Two runs transformed from the error. It was a momentum changer. River went in to the third with a 0-2 deficit. A whole lot different than a 0-0 tie.

The boys hung in there and stayed in the game till the end. 5-1 against a quality team like Atlanta means more to me than a blow out win where bad habits are developed. We keep whittling away that score with them and look forward to our next match up. -Coach Riley Lucas

The Conservation Commission met April 16 and 17 at Conservation Department Headquarters in Jefferson City. Commissioners present were: Don C. Bedell, Sikeston, Chair, James T. Blair, IV, St. Louis, Vice Chair/Secretary, Marilynn J. Bradford, Jefferson City, Member REGULATIONS The Conservation Commission approved the following 2014 early migratory bird hunting seasons.

Sora and Virginia rails: Sept. 1 through Nov. 9 (70 days), with a daily limit of 25 and a possession limit of 75 (combined total for both species).

Wilson’s (common) snipe: Sept. 1 through Dec. 16 (107 days), with a daily limit of eight and a possession limit of 24.

American woodcock: Oct. 15 through Nov. 28 (45 days), with a daily limit of three and a possession limit of nine.

Mourning doves, Eurasian collared doves, and white-winged doves: Sept.

1 through Nov. 9 (70 days), with limits of 15 daily and 45 in possession (combined total for all three species).

Blue-winged teal (BWT), green-winged teal, and cinnamon teal The Conservation Commission approved the following changes in deerhunting regulations.

Increased the number of firearms antlerless deer permits available to landowners of 75 or more contiguous acres in Barton and Jasper counties from one to two and maintained the current availability of landowner firearms antlerless permits in all other counties.

Approved entering into a contract with Museum Arts of Dallas, Texas, for the construction of the Conservation Commission Headquarters Parking Lot D Renovation, located in Cole County, at a total estimated cost of $409,295.

Approved the advertisement and sale of estimated 664,584 board feet and 467 cords of timber on 596 acres of Angeline CA in Shannon County.

Suspended hunting, fishing, and/or trapping privileges of 25 Missouri residents and one nonresident for Wildlife Code violations. Those whose privileges were suspended are: Robert M. Old business: Mary Plummer reported that for the Nursing Home birthday party on March 28 Pam Wares and Becky Mohan provided cakes; Shirley Smith brought fruit and other prizes; and Maurine Crawford and Marie Collum brought colorfully wrapped gifts. About fifteen residents played Bingo. Helping were Mary Plummer, Paula Thompson, Peggy Loe, Pam Wares, Marie Collum, Maurine Crawford, and Shirly Smith.

For the Red Cross Bloodmobile at the LaPlata Christian Church on April 7 helpers included Lions Club members and the following members of Atalpal II: Paula Thompson, Donna Kelly, Wanda Sederwall, Shirly Smith, Lenara Grear, Jean Bruce, Pam Wares, Carol Hays, Gerry Prather, Sharron Burns, Mary Plumlee, Donna Zurcher, Blanche

Meeks, and Peggy Loe. Paula reported on the April 9 “Thank you” luncheon held at the Nursing Home for volunteers and donors. In keeping with the theme a Thanksgiving meal was served: turking and trimmings.

All enjoyed the meal and the game that was played afterward. Red Roberts was to be ninety on April 10 and all sang “Happy Birthday” to him. He is a volunteer as well as a resident. Attending from Atalpal II were Wanda, Peggy, Paula, Sharron, and Mary.

Announcements included the times for the Easter Egg Hunt on April 12 and the LaPlata Library Open House from 10 to 12 on April 19.

The next meeting will be at 4 P.M. at the same place on May 8 with hostesses Mary Plumlee and Gerry Prather. The program will be by Carol Hays. The April meeting was adjourned after the members repeated the Club Collect.

Mayor Platz, and the Quota club. Thank you to Sheri Turner and C&R for donating cookies for the hot dog dinner. Kindergarden through 6th grade ran this event. Every class picked a Habit to teach

the audience. At the event, the 6th grade class and Bonnie Moncrief made 1 quilt each to raise money for the 6th grade class to go to Jefferson City. Renee Reeves and Paula Fast were the 2 winners of the

quilts. At the event, every student also shared their Bare Book with their parents. Bare Book are hard back books that are authored and illustrated by each student.

The Seibert Club of La Plata, met Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at the Baptist Family Life Center with Dora Lovingier as hostess. The table was decorated with a large hand-crocheted white doily centered with an Easter basket. In the basket were plastic eggs with a Scripture (Matthew 28:6) inside. In addition, small square decorated boxes were around the basket, along with wrapped chocolate eggs There were 4 members in attendance and we welcomed one guest, Doris West. Everyone was glad to see her and have the opportunity to visit.

President Irene Osborn called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. She thanked Dora for being our hostess and Kathy East led in prayer.

Roll call was “What is your favorite breed of dog?”

There were many different answers and memories of

our childhood dogs were shared.

Secretary Kathy East read the minutes of the March meeting and they were approved. Treasurer Leila Ward gave her report and it was approved. There was no Old Business. Under New Business, Courtesy Chairman Dora passed Easter cards to be signed and sent to our “Ladies of Loving”: Betty Cribb, Bonelle Crosby, Hazel Hiles, and Helen Sees.

There was a discussion regarding the change of our meeting day. Both Kathy and Marsha Yahl belong to the Hands of Friendship Quilt Guild and they sometimes have difficulties getting to both meetings on the same day.

Kathy made a motion that we change our meeting day to the second Wednesday of each month, seconded

by Irene, and the motion carried. This change will begin with the May meeting.

Plans were made to visit the Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton, MO, on May 14, 2014.

Marsha will check to see how long it will take us to get to Hamilton, and then we will decide what time to leave. We plan to tour the Quilt Company and find a place to eat lunch before returning home.

The “Hostess with the Mostest” challenge was to count the number of letters in our 3 names and then pay the treasury 2¢ for each letter Kathy East won with 17 letters and received two1 qt. storage bowls.

Marsha showed the Raffle Quilt of the Kirksville Hands of Friendship Quilt Guild, which is in patriotic colors and beautiful. The Quilt Show is the evening of May 30, and until 4 p.m.

May 31, 2014, at the Kirksville YMCA, with the raffle at 3 p.m.

Leila gave the devotions by reading the very meaningful words of a favorite Easter hymn sung at her church this past Sunday.

Her program was “Why We Have Easter,” and she shared a number of very beautiful paintings depicting the life of Jesus Christ.

Everyone took an egg from the large basket and each contained the scripture from Matthew 28:6.

We were challenged to write things associated with Easter. Leila won the challenge and received a set of two 2-qt. storage bowls.

Delicious refreshments of buttermilk salad, cheese ball and crackers, and various sodas were served by Dora and the rest of the afternoon was spent visiting.

The next meeting will be held Wednesday, May 14, 2014, with the trip to the Missouri Star Quilt Company.

Joe Koenen, Agri-Business Specialist LIVESTOCK DISASTER PROGRAM We finally have a new farm bill in place (after lots of wrangling in Washington) and we will be getting more information on the particulars in the future.

I want to mention some on the first program that came out here today.

Most of you that are livestock producers should be familiar with the livestock disaster program that we’ve had in the past.

USDA announced that there will be one for losses incurred during 2012 and 2013 which were bad years here in North Missouri. The program in the past (and remember this is changing as we speak) paid producers an amount based on losses. This year’s program will not end until January 30th of 2015 so you have plenty of time to gather things, learn more and apply. So what kind of information will the Farm Service Agency (FSA) need from you as a livestock producer? Financial records, county assessment sheets, livestock purchase records and sales records and even pocket production books will be acceptable.

Field Trip to the La Plata Library

Macon Police Department On 04/08/2014, Macon Police Department (MPD) received a report of a burglary occurring in the 100 block of Main Street during an unknown time frame. The reporting party told police they were checking on a building owned by an associate when they noticed several items were no longer in the building. Items missing included stainless steel tables & shelving along with other items. An estimate of the missing items was not available at the time of the report. This case remains under investigation by the MPD. On 04/09/14 at approximately 8:20am, officers of MPD served active arrest warrants upon Gabreal Sweet, 24 of Macon. Sweet had active arrest warrants out of the City of Macon for failure to appear on the charges of stealing and driving while revoked.

Sweet was taken into custody and transported to the Macon County Jail to be held in lieu of bond.

On 03/27/14 at approximately 11:00am, officers at MPD attempted service of an arrest warrant in the 200 block of North Rubey at a residential apartment.

During the contact, police did not locate the subject of the warrant, however, they did make contact with additional persons within the residence. Police had consent of building owner to check the residence for the subject of the warrant with negative contact. Also during the contact, police found what appeared to be synthetic cannabinoid in plain view, which was seized as evidence. Police then determined the owner of the item, a 20-year old black male of Macon, and placed him under arrest for possession of synthetic cannabinoid. The suspect was transported to the MPD for process-

ing and was released on summons pending a municipal court date. Due to the information obtained during the contact, police secure the residence and obtained a search warrant for narcotics. A search warrant was obtained and executed at approximately 3:00pm. During the execution, additional drug paraphernalia & controlled substances were located within the residence. Police have applied for and obtained an arrest warrant for the renter of the apartment, Gabreal P. Sweet, for possession of controlled substance (cocaine), possession of synthetic cannabinoid, & possession of drug paraphernalia. On 04/09/14, police located and arrested Sweet on the active warrants. She was transported to the Macon County Jail to be held in lieu of bond.

On 04/10/14 at approximately 9:00am, an officer of MPD served an active arrest warrant upon Eddie Gravitt, 50-year old white male of Macon, for failure to appear on the charge of driving while revoked.

Gravitt was in custody at the Macon County Jail for unrelated charges and was left in their custody in lieu of bond.

On 04/10/14 at approximately 9:00am, an officer of MPD served an active arrest warrant upon Douglas Dale, 27-year old white male of Macon, for failure to appear on charges of possession of marijuana, driving while license revoked & stealing.

Dale was in custody at the Macon County Jail for unrelated charges & was left in their custody in lieu of bond.

On 04/10/14 at approximately 10:00am, a victim reported to MPD their vehicle had sustained damage while parked in a parking space in the 200 block of North Rollins on 04/09/14 between the hours of 11:30am-1:00pm.

Damage to the vehicle was consistent with being struck by another unknown vehicle. An estimate of the damage was not readily available at the time of the report. This case remains under investigation at this time.

On 04/13/14 at approximately 8:15am, MPD responded to a report of a leaving the scene of an accident. It was reported by witness that a dark colored super-duty pick up pulling a trailer struck a parked vehicle in the 200 block of West Briggs Drive. Police located the owner of the vehicle & confirmed damage existed to the vehicle which did not previously exist. An estimate of the damage was not readily available at the time of the report. This case remains under investigation at this time.

On 04/13/14 at approximately 9:30pm, officers of MPD responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 600 block of Walnut Terrace. Upon arrival, police made contact with three individuals involved in a verbal & physical altercation. As a result, police arrested a 54-year old white male of Macon for domestic assault. The male suspect was transported to MPD for processing and was later released on summons pending a municipal court date.

On 04/13/14 at approximately 8:30am, a victim reported to MPD a theft had occurred in the 100 block of West Fifth Street sometime between 03/01/14 and 04/12/14. The victim reported a charcoal barbecue grill had been stolen from the property. The grill is valued at approximately $100.00. This case remains under investigation at this time.

A criminal charge is merely an allegation & the defendant is, of course, presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The La Plata Library was very active last week. Kindergarten through 2nd grade had field trips to see what the public library had to offer.

This was in celebration of Library Week and it kept Cindy Moore and Wava McHenry on their toes answering the kids questions. Stop in to see if they made it through the week!

Heartland Headlines

The Heartland dance department presented an Easter recital in the HCA auditorium on Saturday afternoon. The dancers are under the direction of teachers Chelsea Moore and Elizabeth Sharpe, and they range in age from preschool to high school.

This year’s presentation was a pageant depicting the Last Supper followed by the arrest, trial, and death of Jesus Christ. The HCC worship team provided live music for the dancers during the last scene, and everyone celebrated when Jesus rose from the grave. I couldn’t help shedding a few tears.

That moment is powerful even when portrayed by middle school girls wearing painted-on beards.

Following the recital, two of the tiniest dancers presented flowers to their teachers. Then everyone enjoyed a reception with

all kinds of sweet goodies. We are grateful to the teachers, musicians, technicians, parents, and friends who are working hard to support the arts in our small community.

These expressions are an important part of life.

Heartland Christian College recently hosted a parenting seminar for the surrounding community.

The evening featured a presentation plus a question and answer time. My husband, Wendell, and I were privileged to serve on a panel that included President Kris Palmer and his wife, Martha, who is the Academic Dean for HCC, along with Shabaka Williams, Academic Dean of Heartland Christian Academy, and his wife, Nitasha.

We covered a full range of experience in parenting.

Shabaka and Nitasha are currently nurturing five young, energetic children.

So they covered the sleepless years. The Palmers are grandparents, but they also still have a teenager at home. And Wendell and I come from a background of raising our own children and leading youth groups for several years.

We had a great time with the parents who gathered to ask questions and exchange ideas. In the end, we all came back to the same conclusion. It takes more than a village to raise a child. It takes God. We are so grateful to live in a community where both of those elements exist.

Wendell and I were especially glad to serve with this group. The college has played a major role in our life as a family, and we count nine graduates in our little clan. We are pleased to support HCC’s efforts to prepare young people for life.

Winners of this year’s trip to the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (CYCLE) in Jefferson City are: Miriam Blakely, Savanna Presson, Garrett Clark, and Katie Otto. Each of these young people will attend a three day youth conference designed to help high school students learn about electricity, electric cooperatives, Missouri government and to help them develop leadership skills. They will leave on July 9, 2014 and return on July 11, 2014.

2014 Youth Tour to Washington Contest

April 15, 2014 scored the presentations to determine which trips the finalists would be awarded.

Winners of this year’s trip to Washington, D.C. on the Youth Tour are: James McKenzie, Houston Bichsel , Kim Korff and Christina Pennington.

This year’s delegates will join with other youth from across the state to make the trip to our Nation’s capital on June 13, 2014. The Youth Tour program extends beyond Missouri and each year there are more than 1,500 high school juniors in

On March 30, 2014, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies arrested 38 year old Bradley D. Whitezell of Atlanta, Missouri for trespassing 1st degree and assault on a law enforcement officer 3rd degree.

The arrest was a result of a domestic disturbance investigation in Atlanta, Missouri.

Deputies responded to an alleged trespassing incident in Atlanta, Missouri.

It was reported the suspect was highly intoxicated and would not leave the victims property. During their investigation, Deputies identified the suspect as Bradley D. Whitezell of Atlanta, Missouri. At the request of the landowner, Whitezell was warned and instructed to leave the property. With the assistance of Macon County Deputies, Whitezell left the property without incident. A short time later, it was alleged that Whitezell had returned to the property where he was instructed not to trespass.

Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies returned to the scene and located Whitezell. Whitezell was arrested

for 1st degree trespassing.

Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies transported Whitezell to the Macon County Jail. During transport, Whitezell began to assaulting the transporting deputy. The deputy was able to stop the patrol vehicle and secure Whitezell. Other deputies responded to the scene and Whitezell was transported to the Macon County Jail without further incident.

Whitezell was held on a $4,500 bond and was later released pending a court appearance.

On April 11, 2014, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies arrested 39 year old David A. Farland Jr. of Callao, Missouri for unlawful possession of prescription medication.

The arrest was a result of a theft investigation in Macon County, Missouri, in which additional charges are pending.

During an interview, Farland told deputies he was in possession of Clonazepam. Farland advised the deputies he was using the Clonazepam without a prescription. Farland was transported to the Macon

County Jail without incident. Farland was held on a $4,500 bond and was later released pending a court appearance.

On April 11, 2014, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Macon County Sheriff ’s Deputies arrested 27 year old Kyle A. Darr of Callao, Missouri for assault 3rd degree and resisting arrest.

The arrest was a result of a peace disturbance investigation in Callao, Missouri.

Deputies responded to a keep the peace incident in Callao, Missouri. It was alleged a subject was highly intoxicated and had threatened to assault an individual. The suspect was identified as Kyle A. Darr of Callao, Missouri. After voluntary statements were submitted by the victim, Darr was advised he was under arrest for 3rd degree assault. During the arrest process, Darr attempted to pull away from deputies. After a brief struggle, Darr was secured and transported to the Macon County Jail without further incident. Darr was held on a $2,500 bond and was later released pending a court appearance.

Warmer weather encourages people to be more active outdoors. More and more bicycles will be sharing the road with motorists in the coming weeks.

May is Bicycle Safety Month, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, encourages motorists and bicyclists to share the road.

A bicyclist is required to ride as near the right side of the roadway as is safe, exercising due care when passing a standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction; except when making a left turn, when the lane is too narrow to share with another vehicle, or when on a oneway street. Bicyclists may ride abreast when not impeding other vehicles. Bicyclists must also obey all traffic signals and signs, the same as required of drivers of other vehicles.

Use hand signals to let others know you will turn left, right, or stop. Although not required by state law, wearing a bicycle helmet while riding is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself.

Be sure your helmet is the proper size, and adjust the straps for a snug fit.

Riding a bicycle on the sidewalk within a business district is prohibited; when riding a bicycle elsewhere upon a sidewalk, the bicycle rider shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give audible signal before overtaking and passing any pedestrian. Bicycle riders, when riding upon a street or highway, are granted all the rights and are subject to all the traffic regulations applicable to drivers of motor vehicles, except those that by their very nature do not apply.

A bicycle must be equipped with a brake or brakes that will enable its driver to stop the bicycle within 25 feet from a speed of 10 miles per hour on dry, level, clean pavement.

When riding your bicycle, follow these important safety tips: *Never carry passengers. *Walk your bike across busy intersections. *Don’t hitch rides on other vehicles. *Give pedestrians the right-ofway. *Use a horn or bell to warn those who may not see you. *Don’t perform stunts on streets or sidewalks. *Keep both hands on the handlebars except when signaling. *Wear

light-colored or reflective clothing when riding after dark. *Keep your bicycle in safe condition. *Always ride with caution and courtesy.

Of all traffic crashes occurring in Missouri, 38.4 percent resulted in a person being killed or injured. However, when we look specifically at bicycle traffic crashes that number increases to 87.3 percent of the crashes resulting in death or personal injury.

Preliminary statistics for 2012 indicate six people were killed and 483 injured in traffic crashes involving a bicycle. Please pay attention whether you’re driving a vehicle or riding a bicycle. Understand and obey the law and keep safety in mind.

When riding a bicycle after dark, the bicycles must have the following: *A white light mounted to the front of the bicycle or carried by the rider which is visible at 500 feet. *A rear-facing red reflector of at least two square inches or a red lamp which is visible at 600 feet. *Reflective material and/or lights visible from the front and rear on any moving part

Penalties for violations of this law range from not less than $5 to not more than $25 for people 17 years of age or older. For those under 17, a provision allows an officer witnessing a violation to impound the bicycle for a period not to exceed five days.
