SCHOOL CHOICE DEADLINE

School Choice deadline is June 1. Parents who want their children in the DeWitt School District in the 2013-2014 school year have until June 1, 2013, to take advantage of the Arkansas School Choice program. Act 1227 of 2013, allows students to attend school outside of their districts, enabling parents and guardians to choose the best suited for their children. Applications must be submitted to DeWitt School District, P.O. Box 700, DeWitt , AR 72042.

The 2013 Kindergarten Graduation was held May 28, 2013 in the DeWitt High School gym. Principal Robert Franks welcomed parents and then the Pledge of Allegiance was said. The kindergarten students sang America, Let’s Hear It For America and Fifty Stars to go along with the pledge. Other songs the students sang were Rise and Shine, the Wheels on the Bus, Little Duck Duddle, Baby Bumblebee, Skinnamarink and If You’re Happy. They demonstrated their ABC’s with the ABC song. They counted to thirty and by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. The students then sang the Spanish Counting song and recited the Month Poem. The program was completed by the song I’m Growing and two Kindergarten Songs. Students then joined their teachers, who handed them their certificates.

LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT HEADLINE: DeWitt Police Report While traveling northbound Highway 1, Officer Spencer observed a White GMC Yukon swerve off the roadway partially in the ditch the passenger tires well into the grass.

The Yukon then pulled back onto Highway 1 with its flashers on then shut them off.

He waited until they were on the straight away of Highway 1 by Main Street to initiate the traffic stop. The officer approached the vehicle and advised the driver of the reason for the traffic stop. The driver said he dropped his phone on the floor.

Upon speaking with the driver (identified as Pedro Torres), Officer Spencer could smell an odor of intoxicants coming from his person.

The man was asked how much he had to drink that night, and he responded that he’d had three beers. The officer then asked for the

driver’s licenses and the driver complied. Officer Spencer ran his ID through dispatch and it came back a Revoked License out of Memphis, TN. Pedro was placed under arrest for driving on a Revoked Driver’s License and placed in the back of the patrol car.

Consent to search the vehicle was given by Pedro. A small baggie of a white powder like substance was found in a storage space just below the radio, consistent with the looks of Cocaine. The substance was placed in an evidence bag and put into the patrol car. Vehicle inventory was done and the slip was signed by KC Towing.

Pedro was given his Miranda rights and transported to the Arkansas County Jail without incident. While at the jail the white powder like substance was field tested and tested positive for cocaine.

Obituary Raymond O’Donell Raymond O’Donell of Maywood, IL, 51, died Thursday, May 23, 2013 in North Little Rock, AR surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 3, 1962, in DeWitt, AR, the son of Norma O’Donell Roberts and the late Frederick Nichols and grandson of M.C. and Willie O’Donell of DeWitt, AR. He was the third of four children. In 1982 he married Betty Gaither and to this union one child was born. He later remarried Betsy Mitchell in 1991, and to this union one child was born.

Raymond was preceded in death by his father, Fredrick Nichols and his grandparents M.C. and Willie O’Donell.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory, his mother Norma Roberts of little rock, 10 children, Leslie Rone of Gillett, AR; Karmesia O’Donell of Conway, AR; Justin O’Donell of Epes, AL; Makayla Johnson of Elkhart, In; Byrant Harris, Corey Joyner, Jamie Fitzpatrick-Hughes of Little Rock, AR; Ramon Harris, Kenyetta and De’Shon O’Donell of Chicago Il. 3 Sisters, Marjorie O’Donell of Dewitt, AR; Carol VanHooks (Ron) and Eunice Muhammad of North Little Rock, AR. 2 uncles, Martain O’Donell (Catherine) of Omaha, NE; 3 Aunts Vernetta Tolbert of Omaha, NE, Frankie Oats(Kirk) of Casscoe, AR and Robbie O’Neal of Stuttgart, AR and a very special cousin Senola “Mae� Seals fondly known as “Aunt Mae� of Maywood, IL; 8 grandchildren and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rev. Walter Lumsden

Mary Dawson Ward Brown, age 78, of St. Charles died Monday, May 20, 2013. She was born November 28, 1934 in St. Charles to Sherman William and Lula Lockhart Dawson who preceded her in death as did her husbands, Ned Ward and Johnny Brown and sister, Doris Dawson Patrick.

Survivors are her sons: Robert L. Ward of DeWitt, Bill Ward and Johnny Brown both of St. Charles, sister, Lois Cochran of West Memphis, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at St. Charles Baptist Church with burial at St. Charles Cemetery by Essex Funeral Home of DeWitt.

Rev. Walter Avery Lumsden of Boiling Spring Lakes, NC went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wed. May 22, 2013 at New Hanover Memorial Hospital. He was born Jan. 29, 1929 in Bayou Meto, AR to James Walter Lumsden and Louella Webb Lumsden. He is survived by his wife of nearly sixtyfive years, Carmel Lucy Wise Lumsden; sons, John Webb Lumsden of Tupelo, MS and Salathiel Lee Lumsden of Columbia, SC; daughters-in-law, Reba and Deeanna; grandchildren, Felicia Dawn Higgins, Christa Jo Lumsden, Justin Andrew Lumsden, Rebekah Lea Lumsden, Nicholas Aaron Lumsden, and Elizabeth Helen Lumsden; brothers ,Oliver Lumsden, Robert Lumsden, and John F. Lumsden; and sister, Edith Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Alice Brown.

He graduated from DeWitt High School, DeWitt, AR and from Piedmont International University in Winston-Salem, NC. He also studied at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. He has pastored several churches in NC and in MS. At the time of his home going he was pastor of New Life Baptist Church, Ash, NC. Pastor Avery was known throughout Brunswick County for his unstinting work in disaster relief, enlisting young people to make homes of the elderly wheelchair friendly, providing bicycles at Christmas to disadvantaged children, and Hispanic ministry. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and serving as counselor at North Carolina Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell.

The memorial service will be held 10:00 am Sat. June l at First Baptist Church of Oak Island. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Brunswick Baptist Men Disaster Relief, Brunswick Baptist Hispanic Work, or NC Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell.

Obituary Phyllis Froman Phyllis Irene Froman, 84, of Dolomite, AL, passed away on May 17, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Joel Froman; her parents, Oscar and Inez Norris; and a grandson, Ja Tipton.

She is survived by her daughters, Jo Weaver and Sue (Wayne) Traylor; two half-brothers, Steve (Lana) Martin and Kenneth (Nikki) Martin, her grandchildren, Jim Traylor, Treva (Johnny) Bradley, Chris (Wendy) Traylor, Martis (Samantha) Tipton, Candice (Justin) Amber; seven greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services, officiated by Brother Bob Pruitt, were held Monday, May 20, 2013.

Westfall Receives Scholarship The University of Arkansas at Monticello has awarded a Weevil Excellence Scholarship to Colton Westfall of DeWitt, according to Mary Whiting, director of admissions at UAM. The Weevil Excellence Scholarship includes partial tuition and is awarded for a maximum of eight semesters, excluding summer terms. Colton is the son of Rodney and Danielle Westfall. His school activities include marching band, concert band, FFA, Youth Alive and playing on both the Wednesday night youth and Sunday morning praise teams at New Life Fellowship.

Paternal great grandparents are Shelby & Mary Adams and Joyce Peebles and William Peebles.

Beth Padgett traveled to Truman on Thursday, May 16, to attend kindergarten graduation for her grandson on Friday, May 17. She spent three days and nights with her son, Chad, & his family.

They all enjoyed eating at Fuji’s Japanese Steakhouse in Jonesboro after the graduation. Calvin & Mary Covington, Beth’s parents of Augusta, also attended.

Here is a good recipe for spring & summer!

GARDEN PASTA SALAD 2 cups cooked & rinsed spiral pasta (plain or colored) 1 cup broccoli florets ¼ cup sliced or shredded carrots ¼ cup chopped green pepper ¼ cup chopped red pepper 1/4 cup sliced zucchini ½ cup Ranch salad dressing 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard Combine vegetable in a bowl. Add pasta. Combine salad dressing & mustard. Toss to coat.

Optional: chopped ham, bacon bits, chopped tomatoes, chopped pepperoni and cubed and/ or shredded cheese of your choice. Then double dressings salads. Refrigerate until serving.

Shoe resale builds the local developing economy with micro businesses and affordable shoes. The Gillett Extension Homemakers Club held its May meeting on Tuesday, May 21, at The Paddy in Gillett with Dorothy Faye Dixon as hostess, eight members and two guests present.

Club president Margie Hackney called the meeting to order. Debbie Daniels read the thought for the month, “Judge each new day not by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant,” by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Rose Ella Smith read an inspirational message based on Isaiah 51:3 emphasizing how important it is to brighten the days of others, often in simple ways such as offering a word of hope to someone

who is worried, visiting someone who is lonely, or just holding the hand of someone who is ill.

Becki Weinrich had the program on “Increasing Physical Activity as We Age.” Many of the things she listed as being helpful to our physical activity as we age are common sense things that we all know but do not practice: drink at least eight glasses of water a day, take calcium and vitamin D to keep bones strong and our body healthy, eat properly, stay involved in activities, and practice some sort of strength training.

The handout “Increasing Physical Activity as We Age, Strength Training” showed many of the activities involved in the Strong Women program.

Dorothy Connelly, secretary, led roll call with the question: “What is your favorite type of exercise?” Answers were varied, including bicycling-outside and stationary, walking, working in the yard—mowing, raking, etc., Strong Women, watching TV and reading.

The minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer’s report were approved. New business included making arrangements for the trip to McGehee to visit the Rohwer internment camp museum about the Jap an e s e - A m e r i c an s held during World War II

as well as see the memorial cemetery near Rohwer. Five members are going. Members discussed having Miss Arkansas County Rice, Savannah Bisswanger, attend the July meeting. Hackney reminded members to continue recording community service hours.

Sue Berry, Dorothy Faye Dixon’s daughter, read the helpful hint: A dishwasher can be cleaned with household vinegar. Pour a gallon of vinegar in the bottom, let it set for an hour or so, then run the washer through a full cycle.

Bonnie Gail Rustmann, Arlene Ferguson’s daughter, won the door prize. Thelma Connelly and Arlene Ferguson were also present, but Jewel Brixie, Cheryl Pfaffenberger and Anita Trimble were unable to attend. The meeting adjourned with members reciting the Extension Homemakers Creed.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 18, at 2 p.m. at the home of Dorothy Connelly. Miss Arkansas County Rice, Savannah Bisswanger, will attend the July 16 potluck lunch meeting at the river home of Hackney. Bisswanger will present her winning rice dish and provide recipe cards.

White River National Wildlife Refuge Expansion Proposed

By Terrye Seamon “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” Even now, Joni Mitchell’s words still ring true, even in Southeast Arkansas. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service held an information meeting Tuesday, May 14, at Phillips Community College proposing the expansion of the White River National Wildlife Refuge boundary.

“We want to present you with an idea, concept or a proposal that we will be able to get your reaction to. We want to be able to answer questions if you have questions about it. We want to be able to receive your input and get your ideas about it so we can gather all these together and identify issues and from those issues develop management alternatives,” said Keith Weaver, project leader.

“The most important thing is to actually get your feedback, comments, concerns and issues that you have,” said Tina Chouinard, natural resource planner for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The refuge currently covers 160, 756 acres, and the proposed expansion would add an additional 125,349 acres to the boundary lines. The additional area would include land in the following five counties: Arkansas, Desha, Monroe, Phillips, and Bolivar County in Mississippi.

The vast majority of the land is forest land and would encompass the area surrounding the refuge and south to the mouth of the Arkansas River at the Mississippi River. It would also include the floodplain for nine extra miles of the White River, approximately 26 miles of the Arkansas River and 34 miles of the Mississippi River.

Some of the benefits of expanding the boundaries of the refuge are to further the refuge’s mission to preserve, restore, and protect the habitats of migratory birds and wildlife; conserve bottomland hardwood forests and wetland habitats; continue to provide more opportunities to hunt, fish, and to offer environmental education; and improve longterm watershed stability and flood protection in the White, Arkansas, and Mississippi River basins.

Since the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service does not have the authority to negotiate for lands that are not within the approved boundary, expanding the boundary will allow the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to negotiate with willing sellers to purchase their land at a fair market price.

The land acquisition, which covers Ozark foothills to the Mississippi River, would enhance connections between 4 national wildlife refuges, ten state-owned wildlife management areas and 4 state-owned natural areas owned by Arkansas and Mississippi said Weaver.

When the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service does purchase land

thereby making private land public, revenues generated by the refuge go into a national fund as part of a refuge revenue sharing program. A part of those proceeds are dispersed back to counties where refuges are located in order to offset lost tax revenue based on a formula that’s the greater of 75 cents per acre; threefourths of one percent of the fair market value; or 25 percent of the net receipts collected from operation and management of the refuge. Weaver said that in 2012 The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service returned to Arkansas County $1.69 per acre compared to 86 cents the county earned in private tax.

Weaver explained that any land acquisition and any increase in an approved boundary

line will be non restrictive and non regulatory, which means the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will not place any additional laws, regulations or restrictions on the land. Landowners will continue to retain all of their rights, responsibilities and privileges of private land ownership.

Weaver said the funding to purchase the land would come from two funds, the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund and the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The money for the Migratory Bird Fund comes primarily from Duck Stamp revenues, and the revenue from the Land and Water Conservation Fund comes from off-shore oil royalties for off-shore oil drilling. The Land and Water Conservation Fund is a national

FAITH & RELIGION Musings on Memorial Day

By Tom Smith Yes, that’s what Memorial Day is all about with regards to reflecting on and giving thanks for all the men and women in uniform who paid the ultimate sacrifice that we might be free.

Although the first official declaration setting aside a time to honor the war-dead didn’t occur until May 5, 1868, some sources show that the first laying of flowers on the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers occurred in Warrenton, Virginia on June 3, 1861. And, another authentic document describes how some women in Savannah, Georgia laid flowers on some decorated Confederate soldiers’ graves in 1862.

Regardless, following General John A. Logan’s declaration in 1868, the practice of setting aside a day to remember fallen soldiers and place flowers on their graves became an annual event. Originally known as Decoration Day, the name was gradually changed to Memorial Day, which was officially adopted

by Congress in 1967.

And, on June 28, 1968 the day’s observance was moved from May 30 to the last Monday in May to allow for a threeday weekend.

As an Air Force chaplain, the day is especially moving for me. Even now, after 20+ years in uniform, my heart is still moved by the sight of gleaming white tombstones, adorned by tiny flags, standing in perfect rank-and-file.

Likewise, tears still fill my eyes when I hear the playing of taps and hear the retort of the 21gun salute at the graveside service of a fallen comrade.

The original date (May 30) also took on new meaning for me on January 8, 2012, when my wife of 38+ years died suddenly of a massive heart attack. That was the date of her birthday and my mind naturally goes back to our many years together and her sudden, unexpected departure that Sunday morning while I was gone to worship.

A little over a week ago I returned to her grave in central Arkansas to lay some flowers on her grave in remembrance of Mother’s Day and her birthday this week. Even though it’s almost been one-and-a-half years now since her Home-going, tears still filled my eyes as I read the inscriptions on the headstone and looked at the ceramic picture at its top.

As I wrote in my “Grief Reflections” for three months after her departure, you never get over grief; you simply work through it. And, work through

it we must; otherwise, we get mired down in our misery and sense of loss, which taints everything we do and think and robs us of the simple joys of life.

When I’ve presided over a fallen soldier’s funeral. . .seen his flag-draped coffin. . .and presented that flag to a surviving family member, my heart is torn between grief and gratitude: Grief over the lost life. And, gratitude for such service and sacrifice rendered.

The same was true as I stood there recently at Margaret’s grave. Great grief flooded my soul because I miss her; yet, great gratitude also mingled with my tears because of God’s having blessed my life with her for 38+ years.

In some ways, we’re all warriors in one way or the other—regardless of whether we’ve ever served in the military or not. In reality, life’s a battle.

An uphill battle and so often against the tide, it seems. But, it’s always a battle between right and wrong. . .justice and injustice. . . good and evil, etc. And, woe to us if we refuse to enter the fight or are negligent at our post of duty.

As a military chaplain and soldier of the Cross, I’ve dedicated my life to making a difference during my time here on earth. Quite often this has required standing on right and suffering the consequences from those whose consciences are defiled.

So be it; I wouldn’t change a thing.

And, maybe, just maybe when my flag-draped coffin is brought to the cemetery one of these days, perhaps there’ll be one or two who’ll say, “You know, God used him to make a difference in my life.” If so, praise the Lord; if not, I’ll let God, the Righteous Judge, do my Final Evaluation and trust He’ll say to me, “Well done, My good and faithful servant. You’ve been faithful over a little. Enter now into the Joy of your Lord.” Amen and amen.

God Has a Cure for the Sick Soul

By Pastor Steve Ellison When a church is without a pastor, many people become anxious, and some become very anxious. Selecting the pastor becomes a high priority and rightly so. The pastor search committee performs an important function. The members ought to be carefully chosen. Special consideration should be given to their personal qualities and spiritual maturity. Choosing a pastor will have a long term effect on the church, so the pastor search committee is very important.

However, there is another search committee that is far more important: the God search committee.

Every member of the congregation should be an active, contributing member of the God search committee. If this committee serves well, the rest of the church committees become much more effective.

Their successes will be magnified, and the effects of their failures will be reduced. 1 Chronicles 22:19 says, “Now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God.” NASU Searching for God involves setting your heart. Searching for God does not happen by accident; rather, it happens because we make up our minds to search for Him; we will to do it. Jeremiah 29:13-14 says, “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. ‘I will be found by you,’ declares the Lord.” NASU Seeking God is not a once in a while thing. It is not a part time search. Seeking God requires a total surrender to Him and a total commitment to Him. Maybe you think it is not possible to find God, to really know God as a true friend. Second Chronicles 15:4 and 28:9 also explicitly state that God will allow us to find Him. That is truly good news.

Perhaps you think that your past behavior will prevent you from being able to find God. Deuteronomy 4 puts that fear to rest. In that chapter God specifically tells the children of Israel that they will indeed forsake Him. Then in verses 29-31 God gives a beautiful reassurance, “But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul. When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to the Lord your God and listen to His voice. For the Lord your God is a compassionate God; He will not fail you nor destroy you nor forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them.” NASU (emphasis mine) You can find God. You are capable, and He will allow it. God says you can find Him even after forsaking Him and rebelling against Him. God does, however, give some conditions. You must search with all your heart and all your soul. God reveals Himself as a compassionate God who will not fail you.

Seeking God is the most important thing that any church member can do. If church members seek God, no great damage can be done to the church, and the church will accomplish much in God’s name. If church members do not seek God, no great good will come to the church, and the church will not accomplish much in the name of God. Maybe that is one reason God took such a strong stance in 2 Chronicles 15:12-13, “They entered into the covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and soul; and whoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.” NASU

God is Good, All the Time He sends his Angels when you need them most. Ray and I were recently hospitalized and quickly learned God provides.

My best friend sitting with me in ICU, another friend who gave me a beautiful bracelet that became my prayer bracelet, and family and friends that were so caring and generous with their love and concern. We have received delicious home meals, visits, cards, notes, and prayers that have given us strength.

I’m afraid to mention individuals for fear of leaving someone off our list of loved ones.

However, I must thank Peggy James, Walter Dupuy, Nancy Wells and Debbie Bohnert.

Both Ray and I are making progress daily and we’re so thankful to be able to be together as we continue to improve. We wish God’s blessings and love to all. - Ray and Doris Schwartsz

Minute Man Madness

By Don Roth The Arkansas newspapers were urging men still at home and exempt from conscription to join â&#x20AC;&#x153;minute manâ&#x20AC;? companies for home defense.

While Henry M. Rector was governor, he did everything in his power to promote them because they were under his control and could not be sent outside the state. This was vexing to the press because the creation of home guard units discouraged enlistments in the Confederate service.

Although the objection was eliminated by the passage of the Conscript Act in the spring of 1862, home guard companies could only enlist men who were exempt and the press could not reasonably object to that.

It took an emergency to get the organization of home guard companies underway. When Arkansas Post was captured in January 1863, it was believed the enemy would advance on Little Rock. Governor Harris Flanagan issued a proclamation putting the 1862 law in operation. But fear for the capital subsided, and with that, whatever interest that had been aroused in the home guard units.

Throughout the spring, Arkansas editors urged the people to organize as minute men in order to protect the crops against enemy raids and to be prepared for a more extensive defense whenever the long anticipated Federal invasion should materialize.

The people had become convinced that the Federals would not attempt to take Arkansas until the Vicksburg campaign was out of the way, and the response was lukewarm. It did little good to remind them that advance organization and training were essential for successful defense when time should come for it.

Late in May when Maj. Gen. John G. Walkerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Texas Division was withdrawn from Pine Bluff for service in Louisiana, and it appeared that the Vicksburg campaign could not last much longer, the organization of home guard companies finally began in earnest.

However in some localities members could expect to hear no more about drilling until the Federal Army actually appeared in the neighborhood. In other places, battle stations were assigned and service preparations were enacted. (Margret Ross, Chronicles of Arkansas, Arkansas Gazette, June 2, 1963.)

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t touch that!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; are the last words youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll hear before the stinging sensation begins,â&#x20AC;? said Les Walz, Cleveland County Extension staff chair for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For the past week or two, we have been experiencing a larger than normal population emergence of the buck moth caterpillar,â&#x20AC;? he said.

So why the hands-off warning? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just say that if you choose to handle one of these black, fuzzy, caterpillars that it will probably be what granddaddy termed, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;a life lessonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;,â&#x20AC;? Walz said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And it will probably be the last time that you shake hands with one because this introduction will be seared into your brain forever.â&#x20AC;?

Beware of the spines This caterpillar bristles with branched spines along the top and center of the back. The spines are attachd to venom glands and can deliver a nasty sting. The sting may induce immediate pain, severe itching, swelling and redness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My personal experience included a light stinging sensation that escalated to a severe stinging sensation with numbness within 30 minutes,â&#x20AC;? Walz said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The numbness lasted about an hour.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lesson learned!â&#x20AC;? Walz said, adding that some may experience symptoms lasting a day to over a week.

The buck moth is a member of the giant silkworm

family, which includes the familiar green luna moth and has a wingspan of 2-3 inches. This moth can be found in oak forests from Florida to Louisiana, north through Missouri and all the way to Maine.

The buck moth is attractive, with boldly patterned wings that are mainly black with a narrow white band running through the center of the wing. The femaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body is black, but the male has a red tip on his abdomen. The buck moth differs from other moths in that it usually takes flight during daylight hours. Moths can usually be seen in the fall months when they have emerged and begin looking for suitable mates and an appropriate egg laying site. Females will lay a cluster of eggs on the preferred food source, live oaks. Other oak species may serve as a nursery as well.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hungry Buck moth caterpillars can eat a significant amount of leaves from oak and other species. Some trees may look like they have been ravaged to the point of no return. However, this is usually not the case. In most cases, the trees leaf back out and continue on without any problems.

Dodd Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, held a Memorial Service at Bellwood Cemetery, Pine Bluff, on April Nine members and two guests attended the tribute to the UDC Boulder and Confederate Soldier Tribute located on lots owned by the chapter. Also located at this site were wives’ graves of Confederate soldiers: Josie Robinson Boone, widow of Major O.C. Boone, July 4, l841-July 13, 1915 and Jennie Barksdale Hearn, born 1846 died July 8, 1915. She was the widow of Pvt. Robert W. Hearn.

The large boulder was erected in 1917 by the David Owen Dodd Chapter UDC. Glennda Fread, chapter president, conducted the service using as the Opening Scripture the Indian version of Psalm 23. in Fread’s com-

ments for the Boulder Tribute, Fread said, “This Boulder identifies 28 burial spaces in Bellwood Cemetery bought by the Chapter on September 8, 1902.

The intent of the purchase was to provide burial space for UDC members who had no other burial space.”

The Tribute to Confederate Soldiers followed with Fread saying, “We are gathered here to honor the memory of all the gallant Confederate defenders and for our inheritance of their courage and valor.”

Her closing remarks were honoring all other military personnel who have rendered service and sacrifice to defend the United States of America, especially those who are currently defending America.

Three hereditary societies met at the Vieux Carre Restaurant in Little Rock on April 29”“: Diamond Colony New England Women, Arkansas Branch Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, and Founders and Patriots Society.

Marlo Dill presented the program following the three meetings and lunch.

Title of her talk was “Real Freedom, History of Pilgrim Society.”

The National Society Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims is over onehundred years old. This Society is dedicated to preserve genealogies and histories of our Pilgrim ancestors.

Governor Dill opened the first of the three meetings calling the Pilgrims group to order at 11:15 AM. She welcomed those present and guests Peggy Vandenbeg and Loretta Smith. Members present were: Dill, Dorothy Wilks, Barbara Rogers, Betty Harp, Jerrie Townsend, Sheila Beatty, Linda White, Judy Coleman, Margaret McGrew, Jean Pollard.

Jamestowne Society met at the Triple L Arkansas Arts Center The Little Rock Company of the National Jamestowne Society met at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock for their April 27th Luncheon/ Meeting. Welcome was given by Governor Gale Markley. Attending was newest member, Frances Jernigan. Luncheon was served in the Best Impressions Restaurant.

Catherine is a graduate of Little Rock Central and attends UCA. She is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society’ She gave a chronological review of Jamestowne and her ancestor Peter Montague.

She closed saying, “In my journey into college I hope to follow in the footsteps of my ancestor.”

Dill and Pollard reported on the National Conference held in April in Washington, DC. Pollard completed her two year term as Historian General. Dill represented Arkansas as Governor. Four Arkansas deceased members were recognized during the Memorial Service. Branches are located in thirtysix States.

Pet Talk: When Disaster Strikes When a disaster suddenly strikes, it can be frightening for everyone, including your pet. The best thing you can do for you and your petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safety is to be prepared, develop a plan for emergencies, and have it ready before the disaster strikes. Planning ahead is the key to keeping yourself and your pet safe before, during, and after a disaster. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Before a disaster, it is important to insure that all your animals are identified within a system that will allow both of you two to be reunited if separated,â&#x20AC;? said Wesley Bissett, assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Identification can come in a variety of ways, such as collars or microchips. Collars may be less expensive, but they are much easier to lose; whereas, microchips may be more expensive but provide the advantage of being permanently within the animal. You should also try to keep a photo of you and your pet together to verify ownership.â&#x20AC;?

When preparing for a disaster, it is imperative that all of your petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vaccinations are current. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you do not typically have your dog vaccinated for Bordetella, or kennel cough, consider doing so as storm season approaches,â&#x20AC;? said Bissett. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is disease prevention in case your pet is checked into an animal shelter.â&#x20AC;?

When packing emergency supplies for your pet, remember to store at least a one-week supply of pet

food to keep the petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s GI tract from becoming upset and enough water to meet you and your petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs for up to three days. If you must evacuate the area, make sure to grab your petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food and water bowls before leaving. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If your pet is on a prescription for a chronic illness, keep at least a two-week supply of medication as well as a copy of the petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s medical records,â&#x20AC;? said Bissett. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It may be difficult to have prescriptions re-filled in an emergency situation. Also, make sure you have a kennel or crate to transport your pet in case of an evacuation.â&#x20AC;?

During a disaster, it is important to follow a prewritten strategy to ensure you and your petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safety.

This not only saves valuable time during the disaster, but it can also aid in remembering important details of the event afterwards. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is also important to heed all evacuation recommendations and orders,â&#x20AC;? said Bissett. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If the number of animals that you will be evacuating will require multiple trips, plan ahead and leave early!â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;If your pet is injured during a disaster, immediately seek veterinary medical help, which in many cases is available as part of the local or state response,â&#x20AC;? said Bissett. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If help is not instantly available, perform first aid until help arrives.â&#x20AC;?

DAR Met at Stuttgart First Presbyterian

Arkansas Post Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution held their April 23 Meeting at Stuttgart First Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. with ten present.

Chapter Regent Jean Pollard presided.

Regent Pollard and Chapter Chaplain Janice Reed formally welcomed Betty Wilson as a new member and presented her with a chapter yearbook.

Assisting Pollard with the opening ritual were Chaplain Reed and Elaine Berg led the Pledge of Allegiance. Norma Oliver led the salute to the Arkansas Flag, Dorothy Wilks led the Americanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Creed, and Mary Bisbee led the singing of the National Anthem.

The President Generalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Message was read by Jerrie Townsend, and Reed presented the national defense message about our Constitution. Plans for next fallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recognition of Constitution Week were discussed with participation at Phillips College.

Birthday recognition and the sunshine report were given.

Minutes of the March 26 Meeting were read by Chapter Secretary Debra Shea and approved. The treasurerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s report was presented by Townsend. Pollard gave the registrarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s report noting that two Supplementals were nearing completion and one transfer from C.A.R. to DAR will also be completed soon.

Only one application for membership is being worked on at this time. Pollard urged members to consider adding their young family members to membership in C.A.R. as the Joseph Stillwell Chapter, sponsored

by Arkansas Post Chapter, DAR, is down to seven members.

Minutes for committees included the Preamble read by Bisbee, flag minutes by Berg, commemorative events by Townsend noting observance of War of 1812â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Battle of York and Commemoration of Zebulon Pike, commander of troops. was killed there.

The Arkansas Post Chapter plans to assist County Judge Sonny Cox with the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anniversary celebration this fall.

The ten year update for the State Regentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s publication of Chapter Histories has been sent in and received by the State Chairman for this project.

State Chairman for Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Issues, Reed, presented the program, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Beacon on Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Issues.â&#x20AC;? Reed said the National Society divides Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Issues

into three categories=FamiIy, Career, and Health.

She asked what most people think of when they hear â&#x20AC;&#x153;womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s issuesâ&#x20AC;?, and most responded with suffrage, the right to vote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Issues covers almost everything we do,â&#x20AC;? Reed explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We do have a voice in issues,â&#x20AC;? she continued. Women are involved in family finances paying bills, planning vacations, were just a couple of issues women are involved with.

Reedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s State Committee sponsors an Essay Contest and she urged the members to enter this. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We do have a voice worth listening to,â&#x20AC;? Reed concluded.

Pollard announced that the May 22 meeting would be held at the Stuttgart First Presbyterian Church with Townsend presenting the program â&#x20AC;&#x153;Beacon on Your Lineage.â&#x20AC;?
