Drug Take Back event planned for April 26

The Drug Take Back Box is always available at the Lamar Police Department, 1106 Broadway, for those wishing to keep prescriptions out of the water supply and out of the hands of youth. A special day has been set aside to take unused or expired medications, either prescription or over the counter, and will be held Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please put all medications in a plastic garbage bag, minus the bottles. This will help with packaging and transport to the incinerator. No needles or inhalers please.

Lamar West Elementary staff and students began this school year enjoying all the benefits of the Lamar R-1 renovation and remodeling. It was great to step into the school year with central air and central heat, all new windows and an asbestos free facility! The school has four sections of third, fourth and fifth grade. Lamar West's mission for the district is to provide a quality education for all students that will impact their lives with meaningful purpose and successful direction. are a high achieving school and like all other schools they are concerned about those that are not meeting a level of proficiency. The staff implemented an after school tutoring program than provided over 90 elementary students with six weeks of small group. Parents were extremely supportive, providing transportation four afternoons a week! Traditional programs and activities have been a huge celebration this school year at West! Mr. Pommert, elementary music instructor, led three fine performances in the West

gym; the PTO Talent Show was a smashing success and Kara Morey was the West Spelling Bee champion for the second year in a row! Coach Fry and his Hoops for Heart fundraiser collected over $10,000 for the American Heart Association… amazing! And, finally, West Elementary Prime Time Read In on the second Friday of March was the 27th annual Read In! Wow! Mike Kelley promoted the West Prime Time Read In as a model for the state of Missouri. It is now recognized statewide! So much to be proud of at West Elementary!

Barton County Business Expo 2014 Melissa Little/Lamar Democrat Left, a tent was set up on the north lawn of Memorial Hall to raise funds for Truman Area Transportation Services (T.A.T.S.). They were able to raise $500 on Friday.

Staff has participated in the most intensive professional development the past two years including various book studies, in-service days and summer literacy institutes at the University of Arkansas. Melissa Little/ Lamar Democrat Right, Barton County Chamber's Business Expo, held on Friday, March 21, was well received with 25 vendors. Area businesses were able to network and raise funds for organizations along with the many raffles that were held throughout the day.
