Horse Logger passes through Lewis County

BY RITA COX Reporter rita1@lewispnj.com An unusual site passed through Lewis County Friday, Jan. 4.

ACCIDENT RESULTS IN MODERATE INJURIES

Several people reported a horse drawn vehicle traveling on Highway 61 headed north. Lee The Horselogger is traveling the United States by horse and wagon.

They travel to jobs where his Suffolk Punch team of five horses work by pulling logs out of areas where they have been cut, usually a place where machines can’t access. Lee stopped at the Ayerco Truck Stop in Canton to camp overnight and rest. He says he always stays overnight in his wagon to be near the horses and take care of them. He enjoys talking to people about his journeys after he has taken care of his horses’s needs. He tries to camp close to his travel route.

He said he gets many looks traveling down the highway and most of the people are nice and try to pull over to give him room. Traveling on a highway with a team of five horses does present a challenge sometimes, with bad weather, speeding vehicles and narrow roads. Interested persons can keep up with his travels on the website, leehorselogger.com and can also follow him on facebook.

SMOKE HOUSE CLOSES CANTON LOCATION

On Jan. 4, Margaret L. Nunn, 41, of Quincy was headed southbound on US 61 in a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier when she attempted to make a left turn (from the right lane) and was struck by Lora A. Davis-Stroud, 40, of Canton who was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Both drivers had apparently moderate injuries and were both transported to Blessing Hospital in Quincy for treatment. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

Riverside Smoke House at 305 Lewis Street has closed the Canton location. The restaurant opened in March 2009 in the building that had previously been a number of restaurants including The Bird’s Nest and J.K’s and Cliff and Norm’s. According to owner, Ken Rieffer, Riverside Smoke House quickly became a destination spot for people from all over the area with their BBQ dishes and award winning tenderloins. The Smokehouse is also known for their catering services. In 2012, they opened a second location at 222 South Third in Quincy,

Ill. Rieffer said, “Canton has had a surge in restaurant opening in the past four years with four new restaurants since Riverside opened in 2009. It was a hard decision to make, but it was right for our company to close the Canton store to continue the growth of our business.” Rieffer said they will continue to service the Canton market with their catering business that many people have become accustom to. The Rieffer family said they appreciate all of their customers and look forward to serving them in the Quincy location.
