What’s New for You in 2012?

2012 will be proven to be the year for new experiences to make their way to the Lewis County Fair, along with the return of events that we haven’t had for several years.

In the Grandstand, the Midwest Cowboys Rodeo Company will put on a full –fledged rodeo on Wednesday, July 11th starting at 7:30 pm. They offer bull riding, barrel racing, bareback, mutton bust’n and much, much more. Local contestants are encouraged to enter and children age 3-6 can participate in sheep riding for free, information on how to enter the rodeo is in this fair publication. Speaking of bulls, the mechanical bull from the Buckin’ Bull Saloon will be making his appearance at the Lewis County Fair all four nights, weather permitting.

An important part of fairs is fun and learning. We have added lots and brought back many educational

experiences for kids and adults alike. The Lewis County Farm Bureau will have My American Farm interactive ag educational games at their booth sponsored by the American Farm Bureau and Pioneer Seed. SCOPE, a grassroots Missouri organization, will be in the Commercial building on Saturday with handson science activities 10 am to 4 pm. Also in the Commercial building will be an agricultural education display that will have hands- on activities from the Illinois University Extension – Adams County. Come milk a cow and more. This display will be in the Commercial building Wed, Thurs, and Friday 3 pm – 9 pm and Saturday 10 am – 9 pm.

The Grandstand will be home to 4 exciting nights of action. Returning back to the Lewis County Fair is the Rodeo. Midwest Cowboys Rodeo Company from Bowling Green, MO will be presenting a full rodeo on Wednesday night. They offer exciting opportunities for kids to participate along with local contestants.

Motocross Races will be back in one night of excitement. Thursday night is the show to watch for the fast roaring, high flying quads and bikes.

Promoter Nathan Bringer, owner of Outback MX Park outside of LaGrange will supervise the design and development of the track and run the races. The

excitement will begin with practice at 5:00 pm.

The Demolition Derby promises to be another night of thrilling edge of your seat excitement.

Track officials need the crowds’ help to count 5-4-32-1 on Friday evening, to start the cars crashing for the cash. Stock Cars, Modified Cars and Modified Compact cars will fill the arena with all the crashing and banging until only one is left.

The smoke will start blowing at 7 pm when the Twin States Truck & Tractor Pull start down the track. Eleven classes of tractors and trucks will provide a night of exciting entertainment. Local trucks will pull after the main event.

Conservation Fishery Agent will be giving a presentation followed by a Snake presentation by Lewis County Conservation Agent, Brock McArdle.

Both of these will be on the Home Ec stage. Friday evening in the horse arena, Lt. Don Cibert will put on a demonstration with his Drug Dog, Vitou. This is something that we feel is beneficial for any age and is pretty amazing to witness, so don’t miss it.

Sgt. Brent Bernhardt of the Missouri Highway Patrol will have the Seatbelt Convincer on Main Street Friday evening. Come and experience for yourself the benefits of wearing your seatbelt. On Saturday come and visit Buckles the Bear from the Missouri Department of Transportation. Lewis County Farm Bureau and the Lewis County Fair Board will be giving away bicycle safety items or you may win a new bike. The Smokehouse will be on display on Saturday afternoon. Your children can practice fire safety in case of an emergency. Thank your local fire departments for putting on this display, it may well save your life.

A fun event just for the Teens has been missing for the last several years and will be making its musical return on Saturday night. SADD will be sponsoring a Teen Dance in the All Purpose Pavilion from 8:30 pm to 11:30 pm. Music will be provided by Daniel Ray of Ewing to dance the night away.

CAMPER PARKING Parking space for all campers is available at a cost of $10.00 PER DAY. Camping permits will be issued upon registration. Campers will be checked for permits, so they must be displayed in camper windows AT ALL TIMES. Camper parking must be registered upon arrival at the fairgrounds entrance gate, or fair office or parking may be requested prior to the fair by contacting: William O’Brien 573-494-3514.

TRUCK PARKING - Limited Spaces Parking space for personal pick-ups on the North side of the arena is available at a cost of $10.00 for the week or $5.00 per event. Truck permits will be issued upon registration. Trucks will be checked for permits, so they must be displayed in truck windows AT ALL TIMES. Everyone is eligible for a discounted season ticket if you enter an item in the 2012 Open Shows. That includes the animal shows and Home Economic shows. Do you have a picture that you have taken, a jar of jam, or a craft item that you could enter? Or a cool rock that you found, you make some awesome cookies or everyone says your pie is the best? Do you have Grandma’s quilt, some beautiful flowers, or a vegetable from the garden? Bring them on out on Tuesday July 10th or Wednesday 11th.

Entering just one or more items discounts your season ticket by $10 for adults.

Gate Admissions The Lewis County Fair has the policy that “Everyone Pays” at the gate to attend the fair. This is how we provide the varieties of entertainment seen at the fair. If it was not for the support at the gate the fair would not be able to continue to provide these events each year.

Superintendents reduce event admissions to assist in making the cost of participating reasonable for all.

Comments are welcome on the Lewis County Facebook page and at the office during the fair.

Your input will assist the board in future decision making.

The classes and rules for the Open Animal and Home Economics shows will be printed and will be available at the Lewis County Extension office in Monticello. The classes and rules are also available to print from the web site. Information regarding day and night events are available in this publication and available on the web site. James “Junior� Miller

James “Junior� Miller and his twin sister Georgia (now deceased) were born and raised near Benjamin in Lewis County. They attended school in Monticello, Benjamin, and Canton, graduating with the class of 1955.

Junior has a younger brother, Gary McMahill, of Orange Park, FL, who enjoys traveling to Lewis County to visit several times a year.

Junior worked for 41 years at the LaGrange Foundry, retiring in 1998. Junior also worked for as an EMT for the Lewis County Ambulance District and served on the Lewis County Ambulance District for several years.

Junior has been involved with the farming for several years and in 2001 the Lewis Soil and Conservation named him “Cooperator of the Year�. Although Junior has downsized his farming, he still enjoys it very much.

Junior married Shelby Job February 16, 1956, and together they raised three children: Robin Henley of Yorktown, VA; Greg Miller of Canton, MO; and Chris Miller of Summerville, SC. Shelby passed away April 15, 1985.

Junior married Jan Carter May 28, 1988, who passed away March 16, 2006.

Junior later married Judy (Penn) who was raised in Lewistown and brought to their marriage two daughters: Brenda Mallett and Kimberly Schneider both of LaGrange, MO.

Junior and Judy have 10 grandchildren: Shelby Henley of Yorktown, VA; Brandon Miller of Keokuk, IA; Lane, Chad, Ryan, and Shawn Miller all of Canton, MO; Christopher and Sophie Miller of Summerville, SC; and two step-grandchildren: Drew Mallett and Brock Schneider both of LaGrange, MO. Although Junior has turned down several offers to be on the Fair Board, he enjoys devoting his time at the Lewis County Fair.

You will see Junior at the fairgrounds before the fair starts, getting things ready, or you might see him during the fair doing whatever needs to be done! Junior enjoys supporting and helping out the kids by buying beef at the livestock sale on Saturday night and you might even see him taking a break to get his favorite “ice cream�. To the best of Junior’s recollection, he has only missed one year of the Lewis County Fair!

2011 Fair Queen

Monica Campen Monica Campen, Daughter of George and Marilyn Campen; raised on a Family Farm just a skip outside of Canton, MO. Monica is currently attending the University of Missouri; majoring in Agriculture Education.

“For the past year I have had the opportunity to serve as the 2011 Lewis County Fair Queen. It has been an amazing and eventful year. I enjoyed every minute of the crazed fair week; from early morning livestock shows, handing out ribbons to exhibitors and contest winners, telling jokes with polo at the announcer’s stand, to late nights, watching the main grandstand attractions in the pit V.I.P seating area; as well as meeting so many wonderful people. As a lifelong 4-H and FFA member I have participated in livestock shows, trap shoots, interviews and fashion revues as well as other fair events, but as Queen I had the opportunity to experience everything the fair has to offer. I would like to thank all the volunteers whom work behind the scenes and make the fair possible.

To the 2012 Fair Queen, I wish you all the luck in the world. Your responsibilities will be busy and demanding but I encourage you to enjoy the

2011 Little Miss & Mr

Morgan Keith & Skylar Runnells Morgan is the 6 year old daughter of Ryan and Crystal Keith of Ewing. This fall she will be a 2nd Grader at Highland Elementary. Morgan enjoys swimming, playing with her brother, Evan, basketball and riding her dirt bike.

Throughout fair week, Morgan is busy showing her pigs and bucket calf in the show ring, participating in the kids pedal tractor pull, eating cotton candy and taking part in the kid’s games. This year will be her first year to race in the Motorcross as a youth beginner.

Morgan encourages everyone to come to the fair and see all the animals, ride the rides and see the nightly events.

I am Skylar Runnells from LaGrange, Missouri. I am 7 years old and my parents are Teresa Bringer and Ricky Walton. I enjoyed being the 2011 Little Mr. Lewis County at the fair. I show cows and pigs at the fair. The activities that I enjoy are baseball, swimming, riding my dirt bike and 4-wheeler. I also like working on the farm.

I’m going into the 2nd grade this fall. I want to tell everyone to come out to the Lewis County Fair. It’s a lot of fun and a lot of activities. experience to the fullest. I would also like to wish my fellow 4-H and FFA members GOOD LUCK and have FUN at the fair. Thank you for an amazing year!!”

Home Economics Shows

Home Economics Building Sponsors:

At the fair, visit the Home Economics building to view the displays of the local talents in crafts, photography, and good foods to name a few. Registration of open show exhibits is Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

The Home Ec. building will open at 5 pm on Wednesday afternoon after the judging. On Wednesday, come and see what delicious items you can purchase at the Baked Goods Auction at 5:00 pm in the Home Ec. building. The Home Ec. Building will be full of bright and beautiful quilts at 4:30 pm as the “Country Classic” Quilt Show takes place. All items will be on display until 5 pm on Saturday.

This summer the fair is challenged with the closure of the bridge over Sugar Creek on Highway 16 west of Canton. This is going to make traveling to the fair a little difficult for those living on the east side of Lewis County. The following routes have been established by the Missouri Department of Transportation. Traveling from Canton on Hwy 16 take Route F to Route E to Route A. This will bring you into Monticello by the gas station. The other option is to take Route C out of LaGrange west to Route BB and then north on BB to Hwy 16. This will bring you out just west of Monticello to travel on east to the fairgrounds. If you know of alternative routes involving gravel roads, you might take a leisurely drive to reach the Lewis County fairgrounds. We hope that this small inconvenience will not stop people from coming to the fair as we have many new events and special activities that we don’t think you will want to miss. Also, as with any detours or unfamiliar routes, please use caution and drive safely to arrive safely.

It is a good idea to come to the 2012 Lewis County Fair hungry. There will lots of good food and treats to have while you are at the fair. The 4-H Food Stand and American Legion will have their usual specialities of taco salad and cheeseburgers respectively. The Lemonade Shake-up Stand will have Corn Dogs and Dottie will be there with her famous Funnel Cakes.

A Message from the President: Here it is again, one of the best times of year in Lewis County. The annual Lewis County Agricultural Fair is only 4 weeks away. This will be the 37th year for the fair and it is stacking up to be a pretty good one. The board has been busy putting together a good variety of entertainment in the grandstand and also around the rest of the fairgrounds. We will have all of the usual livestock shows, the wonderful exhibits brought in by kids and adults alike, lots of good food and entertainment.

We were fortunate to be able to book Jerry Germian Rides/All American Amusements from St. Louis as our carnival this year. As you all know, this is not an easy feat for a county our size and I hope you will come and support this carnival as many have complained about not having one in the past.

The only way to continue to keep a carnival is if they do well and that is our hope this year.

They will be offering armbands each evening and something special for the kids on Saturday.

As always, we can’t say enough “thank yous” to the people and business’ that help support this fair and work on the endless amount of projects, decisions and physical labor involved in maintaining the buildings, grounds and putting on this fair. From gathering information to make informed decisions on such things as insurance, what projects need to be done, and how all of it will come together to produce a quality fair, your fair board is trying their best and the support of our community is vital to our success. We are looking to the future of the Lewis Co Agricultural Fair and that will only be possible thru the support of this community. We look forward to seeing you all during the fair and welcome any comments or questions you may have.

In addition to the normal events, we are trying to put a bigger emphasis on the kids and what can we do to make their experience memorable. We will have lots of free activities located around the grounds. We have the drug dog putting on a demonstration, the Dept of Conservation will have several presentations, the Missouri Highway Patrol will bring a demonstration, Buckles the Bear will be on hand with bicycle safety. We will have our regular kids games on Saturday and also the Lewis County Fire Departments will have the Smokehouse for the kids to go thru. We’ve been working with the Adams County University Extension on getting to use Sincerely, some of their ag education material that they developed last year and that display will be in Brenda Wright, 2011 President the Commercial Building the whole week. This not a complete list but we hope you will bring your family out and take advantage of these and other events.
