Governor Jay Nixon cut the ribbon at the new Ursa Farmers Coop located at the south end of Canton, Mo. Gov. Nixon arrived at the facility around 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19. Lewis County IDA Director, Bill Smith, along with Ursa Farmers Coop General Manager, Gerald Jenkins greeted and introduced the Governor to various members of the community who were instrumental in bringing this project to completion. The Governor was accompanied by his wife, First Lady Georganne, and Jon Hagler, Director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Smith and Jenkins guided the group on a tour of the newly completed grain bins and work site and told about the progress and construction of the new Ursa Farmers Coop. Nixon then joined several officials on stage to speak to the large group of people that attended. Gov. This will strengthen agriculture as the backbone of Missouri’s economy, especially our agricultural exports.” Governor Nixon went on to say “Our unemployment rate has reached the lowest level since December 2008, and last year, our exports set an all-time record. We are moving Missouri in the right direction.” Ursa Farmers Coop has a facility located directly across the river from Canton. Farmers choosing to sell their grain to Ursa Farmers Coop had to travel by ferry to deliver their goods. “Delivering Missouri agricultural goods to market in this part of the state just became cheaper, quicker and safer for northeast Missouri farmers,” Gov. Nixon said. “That is a tremendous boost for these men and women who feed, fuel and clothe the world.” The project is very familiar to Governor Nixon who was in Canton in October 2010 to announce the awarding of a
