MEMORIAL DONATIONS FOR AMISH MAN KILLED IN ACCIDENT An account will be set up this week at the Bank of Monticello for those wishing to make a memorial donation to the family of Chris Yoder, who was killed Aug. 30 in an accident on Highway 61 near Canton.

Chris Yoder was born Oct. 26, 1969 a son of William and Anna Yoder. He had lived in this area for several years and had recently moved to Benjamin, where he operated a sawmill.

Surviving are his wife, and six children, who range in age from seven to seventeen years old.

Also surviving are seven sisters and six brothers.

Donations can be made at either Bank of Monticello location in Monticello or Canton.

Brown Bridge Re-Opens After Replacement

The Brown bridge on County Road 527 west of LaGrange, officially opened Sept. 17. The new bridge is 24 feet wider with a concrete deck and a low height rail. It replaces a 16 foot wooden deck bridge.

Funding for the bridge was through an 80/20 soft match credit federal grant, administered by MoDOT. Total cost of the bridge including the in-kind work done by the county was around $45,000. Engineer

Shannon Howe of Benten and Associates, gave the bridge a formal final inspection. The bridge opened to traffic on Sept.

14 after begin closed since June 20.

The Lewis County Commissioners said the next bridge project will be the Durgeons Creek Bridge on County Road 588, southwest of LaGrange.

The Relay for Life event was held Saturday, Sept. 15 at Martin Park in Canton. Several games, booths, and lots of food were available. A bounce house and mechanical bull rides were popular activities, along with entertainment throughout the evening. Luminaries in honor of cancer victims and survivors made a walkway for people to stroll and remember and honor those who have fought the cancer battle.

This vehicle overturned on Highway 61, south of LaGrange on Sept. 12. The driver, Haley Eisenberg escaped with minor injuries.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop B reports that on Sept. 12, Haley B. Eisenberg, 23, Durham, Mo., driving a 1999 Mercury Cougar, was southbound on Highway 61, three miles south of LaGrange, when Eisenberg swerved to avoid a slow moving vehicle. The car traveled off the right side of the roadway, over-

turned several times and came to rest on its top. The driver was transported by Lewis County Ambulance to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill., with minor injuries. Also assisting at the scene were the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department, LaGrange Police Department and LaGrange Fire Department.

Two Arrested For Child Endangerment

Members of the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office arrested Joseph B. Budig, age 36, and Crystal L. Pratt, age 38, of rural LaGrange, Mo., on Sept. 16, on one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the First Degree, a class C felony.

Both defendants reside together and are alleged to have knowingly acted in a manner that created a substantial risk to the life, body and health of a child less that 17 years of age by forcing her to stand in a corner for extended periods of time and by striking about the legs with a belt and wooden rod.

These arrests stem from an investigation conducted in August 2012.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the LaGrange Police Department, Missouri Children’s Division, and Lewis County Juvenile Office.

Both subjects were released on bond.

On Monday, a man exiting from Hwy. 61 north onto the Culver-Stockton/ Canton exit overturned his vehicle. The man was transported by Lewis Co. Ambulance. Canton Fire Department along with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call. No further information is available at this time.

Wiseman arrested for stealing On September 13, 2012 members of the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office arrested Marti Jo Wiseman, age 27, of Lewistown on one count of forgery and one count of felony stealing. Ms. Wiseman, an employee of United State Bank, is alleged to have falsified a customer’s bank deposit slips and taking money from the customer’s deposit. She is alleged to have stolen in excess of $500.00 over a several month period.

HHS band fund raiser The Highland High School Band is selling raffle tickets to raise money for the band’s trip to Florida in December. The Marching Highlanders will perform at the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1 in Jacksonville, Fla. The group will also perform a field show

and march in the parade.

Band members are selling raffle tickets for prizes that include cash, 32 inch television, and other prizes.

Tickets can be purchased from any band member and will be drawn during Highland’s Homecoming on Sept. 29.

EDITORIAL ADVENTURES OF WONDER MOM I’ve shared cleaning reviews and crafty tutorials with you, so now, my goal is to share some recipes with you as well. Here are some outstanding recipes that are not only relatively easy to make (minus the bread which seemed somewhat tough without a bread machine) but are also really fantastic.

Brown Sugar and Honey Pork Ingredients: - Pork Shoulder (I prefer boneless, and sizes can vary. Get the largest size you can) - 2 ½ cups of brown sugar - 1/3 cup of honey Place the entire pork shoulder into your crock pot and cover with the brown sugar and honey.

Cover and cook on low for 10-12 hours or on high for 5-6. (I would suggest low heat if you have the time because it gives more time for the sugar and honey to cook into the meat.) As the pork cooks, it will create a liquid down at the bottom of the crock pot. Pour this liquid over the pork before serving to give it extra flavor.

Orange Ginger Broccoli Ingredients: - Fresh ginger root - 1 cup of brown sugar - 16 oz. Bag of frozen broccoli - Large bottle of orange juice This method may seem strange, but it yields a wonderful result. Empty your frozen broccoli into a pot and instead of covering the broccoli with water to cook, cover it with orange juice. (If you’d like, you can dilute it with water) Turn the eye to medium and allow the broccoli and orange juice to come to a boil. After boiling, add brown sugar. Grind up some fresh ginger and toss into the pot as well. (I have not given an amount of ginger for a reasonsome people like ginger, some do not. Taste-test the mixture as you are adding ginger to determine whether to add more or not) Stir well and cover, reducing heat to low-medium for fifteen minutes.

Strain broccoli and enjoy.

Mashed Cauliflower Ingredients: - 1 large bag of frozen cauliflower - Milk - 2-3 tablespoons of butter - 2 tablespoons sour cream - Salt and pepper to taste Pour frozen cauliflower into pot and cover with water. Place heat on medhigh. Once boiling, reduce heat and cover. Allow to boil for 20-25 minutes or until very soft.

BARTLETT Strain cauliflower and put into pot. Mash cauliflower as you would potatoes. Add butter and sour cream. Add milk until desired thickness is reached.

One desired consistency is reached, add salt and pepper to taste.

Honey Wheat Bread (recipe from allrecipes. com) Ingredients: - 2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C) - 2 cups whole wheat flour - 1 tablespoon active dry yeast - 1 teaspoon salt - 1/3 cup honey - 1/3 cup vegetable oil - 5 cups all-purpose flour Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add honey, and stir well. Mix in whole wheat flour, salt, and vegetable oil. Work all-purpose flour in gradually. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead for at least 10 to 15 minutes.

When dough is smooth and elastic, place it in a well-oiled bowl. Turn it several times in the bowl to coat the surface of the dough, and cover with a damp cloth. Let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes.

Punch down the dough.

Shape into two loaves, and place into two well greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pans. Allow to rise until dough is 1 to 1 1/2 inches above pans.

Bake at 375 degrees F for 25 to 30 minutes.

Quick and Easy Pasta Sauce Ingredients: - 1 clove garlic (well minced) - ½ onion - 2 16 oz. cans tomato sauce - 1 8 oz. can tomato paste - 1 handful parmesan cheese - salt and pepper - lemon pepper Pour two cans of tomato sauce into boiler and turn on medium heat. As the sauce is heating, begin adding other ingredients, saving the salt and pepper until last to taste. Allow to cook 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently.

45 Years Ago The Press-News Journal Sept. 14, 1967

In what is thought to have been an attempt to wreck a train, 12 rail spikes were pulled out of the QO&KC track and three rail bolts were removed. That spot selected was about a mile and a quarter past Edina. Twain No. 42, mixed passenger and freight, passed over the place Monday morning without disaster, and the trouble was located shortly afterward by section foreman, W.O. Garrett.

Mary Elizabeth Prentice, 60, died in St. Mary Hospital. Mrs. Prentice was well known and highly respected by the people of this part of the county having lived for many years east of Lewistown.

At one time, her husband, William, owned nearly a thousand acres of land just east of Lewistown and was engaged in the livestock business. For years he prospered but later was compelled to sell the farm in small tracts.

Specialist Four Lloyd V. Boudreau, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Boudreau, Canton, received the Army Commendation Medal Sept. 5 while serving with the U.S. Army Headquarters Area Command in Vietnam.

Spec. Boudreau earned the award for meritorious service as a military police assigned to the 537th Military Police Company in the command near Saigon.

Leo A. Dye, 58, of near Edina, was killed Sept. 12 when a tractor he was driving on the John Parrish farm near Colony overturned. He was the Edina Street and Water commissioner.

75 Years Ago The Press-News Journal Sept. 14, 1937 The Canton New Gem Theatre will give its opening performance in its new building on Lewis Street Nov. 1, according to present plans. The new auditorium will have three aisles, 500 new cushioned seats costing about $8 each, seat lights in each row, with four panels of lights on each wall. Each panel will contain 35 bulbs of various colors.

Sunny Side’s tribute to the boys who left: The editor suggests that patriotic people meet at Monticello Wednesday morning to go with “the Boys” to meet the train on their way to the training camp.

We cannot be one of those who respond because we do not wish to see our boys torn from their families and homes, although we realize it is necessary.

We would gladly turn out to welcome them home when they return.

We expect to be sweet in the neighborhood the coming winter. The high price of sugar and syrups induced many of our neighbors to plant a patch of sorghum, and Lou Herzog has just installed an outfit for transforming the juice to palatable sorghum. He expects to begin making it Wednesday.

Mr. Wm. Henton is writing a very interesting history of the Hentons, VanMeters and Briscoes.

Charles Day, who recently moved from LaBelle to the Charley Bangert farm east of Monticello, is exhibiting a most wonderful piece of artistic work in the shape of a checkerboard made from 95 different pieces of wood. The board shows the finest kind of

The Monticello Custom Mills, which have been shut down the past two weeks on account of putting in a new floom, started up last Monday and have been running every day this week. This new Floom is 32 fee long, 10 feet deep and 7 feet wide.

The posts on the side are only two feet apart and are all oak. IT is planked up with No. 1 pine joists.

Mr. J.P. Caldwell, who is nearly 75 years old, not only superintended the work, but did a great deal of it himself. He considers it the best piece of work of the kind he has ever done.

Mr. Caldwell began milling in Ralls County away back in the “twenties”/ In 1839 he build what is now known as Bringer’s Mill, on the Middle Fabius in the county. In 1856 he took his youngest son into partnership with him and since that time the management of the mill has been under the control of his son. The Monticello Custom Mills are the only water power mills in northeast Missouri that do an exclusive custom business.

Daniel Easly, whose death occurred a few weeks ago near this place, is said to be the first white man who settled north of the Fabius in this county.

He built a cabin (about 1830) near the present residence of J. H. Leeper.

Tell us about your education and family.

I started school in Williamstown and went through the seventh grade when they consolidated with Canton R-V, where I continued until graduation. After graduation I went to the University of Missouri at Columbia where I received a BS in General Ag and a teaching certificate in Ag Education. I married Michele Franks (from Canton) 29 years ago and we have two wonderful children. I have served on numerous boards and committees which include National and State Corn Growers, County Farm Bureau, County Extension Council, County Fair Board and have been a 4-H leader, before being elected to public office. I worked with Senator Norman Merrell, Representatives Gary Wiggins and Sam Leake to help establish value-added agriculture processing farmer owned co-ops in Missouri.

What committees do you serve on?

I am the Chairman of Agriculture, Food Production and Outdoor Resources, and I also serve on the following committees: General Laws, Judiciary & Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence, Small Business, Insurance & Industry, Seneate Select Committee on Redistricting, Joint Committee on Legislative Research, Joint Committee on Life Sciences, Jooint Committee on Wetlands, Senate Interim Committee on Natural Disaster Recovery, Sub Committee on Fiscal Response, Secretary’s Council on Library Development.

Why did you first run for political office?

I felt northeast Missouri needed someone who could represent rural Missouri and be knowledgeable about agriculture and business.

How did your role change from a state representative to a state senator?

Being a representative and a senator are two totally different worlds. I always enjoyed being a state representative and serving all the people in the five and a half counties which had no stop lights, no McDonald’s and no Wal-Marts. In the House I could focus on my specific issues that I was very familiar with and let the other 162 focus on their specialties. In the Senate, with just 34 of us, we all have to broaden our horizons. One example is that I served on the Judiciary Committee, usually seats held by attorneys. One other very important difference is Senate confirmation to state boards and commissions.

These are very important positions that we as senators have a limited say in as to whom does or does not get confirmed.

My Senate district also will have 14 counties and goes from the Mississippi River at Alexandria to the Missouri River at Brunswick. In the Senate we have a much broader base of issues which we deal with.

Can you describe in typical day when the senate is in session?

The Senate starts session on Mondays

at 4 p.m. and Tuesday--Thursday at 10 a.m. We start each day with a prayer and pledge of allegiance. Session generally goes from 10:00 until noon, then 4--6 p.m.

Later in session (April and May) afternoon sessions go from 2--6 p.m. They have gone all day and night with no breaks until 7:30 a.m. during a filibuster. The public can listen to debate on the Senate website at www.senate.mo.gov When is some upcoming legislation you plan to work on?

As far as the coming year’s legislation, I plan on working on youthful employment in agricultural production.

Can you give us some thoughts on the drought Missouri experienced this summer?

Concerning the drought; I am concerned about the livestock industry and the longterm effects because of possible reduced herd numbers.

When the senate is not in session, tell us how you spend some of your time.

I am still a farmer and keep the farm going with family help. Of course there are the county fairs, festivals, fish fries, soup suppers and ice cream socials where it is great to meet and renew acquaintances.

I did make three parades this year on the 4th of July! It is fun to meet and serve all of the great people in Northeast Missouri.

US Cellular Brings Back Calling All Communities U.S. Cellular is excited to announce the return of its Calling All Communities campaign. For the fourth year, U.S. Cellular is giving $1 million to schools to improve the education of students. The campaign invites communities to band together to vote for their school by visiting their local U.S. Cellular store to pick up a voting code and entering it online at uscellular. com. Voting begins this Friday, September 14 and runs through October 21.

It would be great to have a local school be among the winning schools, and we want to spread the word to the community to get involved.

The school that garners the most community votes will win $150,000 and the next 17 schools

with the most votes will receive $50,000. Calling All Communities is open to all K-12 schools — big or small, public or private.

Each winning school can use the money however they choose. Missouri has had two winning schools in the past. One used the money for a new computer lab and the other school was able to buy a new gym floor.

We would be happy to arrange an interview with a U.S. Cellular representative to discuss the campaign further and give tips to schools on how they can rally the vote. MoDOT Seeks Projects for ‘Safe Routes to School’ Funds The Missouri Department of Transportation is seeking projects to be funded with federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funds.

Applications are due

by November 5, 2012.

Projects will be selected by a statewide committee of transportation professionals, education professionals, health department officials and walking/

bicycling advocates.

Awards will be announced in January 2013.

The SRTS program offers up to 100 percent federal funding focused on providing infrastructure, safety improvements, ADA improvements, safety education and encouragement for children to walk to school safely.

Eligible projects must be located within a two-mile

radius of a grade school (K-8).

Funding for the program is split into two funding categories: Infrastructure projects, including but not limited to - sidewalk improvements, crosswalks, bicycle facilities, etc., Non infrastructure projects, including but not limited to - walk to school promotional programs,

walking school bus programs, bicycle / pedestrian safety education, etc.

CELEBRATIONS Farm Bureau holds annual meeting At the 64th Lewis County Farm Bureau (LCFB) Annual Meeting, held Sept. 6 at Highland High School, Dan Schmitz, President of LCFB, presented Rep. Craig Redmond, with the “Friend of Agriculture” Award.

Jennifer Wood, presented a program on her recent A LOT trip to the Ukraine and Poland.

Though Ukraine is not as modernized as Poland, much of the farm equipment in both countries was smaller than seen in the United States.

Zach Erwin presented the “Century Farm” Award to the Ronald Scott family.

Their farm had been in the family for over 100 years.

Alisha McCarty, from the Mo Corn Growers Association, explained the advantages from the check-off money; working on the farm bill; renewable fuel standards; and working with the Missouri Farmers Care organization.

Missouri Farm Bureau board member, Chris Chinn, spoke about the standards for school lunch.

The recommended amount of calories for K-5 is 450, which includes: no meat at

breakfast, and only 1 oz. of meat for lunch.

Sen. Brian Munzlinger, spoke about the importance of agriculture and importance of growing up on a farm. Senator Munzlinger has proposed a bill to allow kids to work on the farm if approved by their family.

Rep. Craig Redmond, reminded everyone to fill out their MOFB questionnaires and get involved in politics. He told the group he will continue to fight for agriculture, and to keep those that don’t understand farming from attacking our way of life.

At the business part of the meeting the following were elected to Lewis County Farm Bureau: Michele Munzlinger President; Robert DetersVice-President; and Ronald Krueger – secretary, treasurer. The following were elected to the board: Jennifer Wood, Jeff Lay, Michael Hicks, and Matt Bozarth.

A major goal was achieved last year with 589 family memberships.

This is the highest total memberships in the bureau’s 64 years.

Ryan Snelling of Knox County has the title of World Champion in dead lifting. Since 1998 he has won 12 world champion titles in three different federations. He will be competing in the Exalt Gym, Night of the Living Dead professional dead lift competition.

Snelling lives in Brashear, Mo. He is a physical therapist assistant in Milan. He is married to Melissa and has a step daughter, Hailey age 13 and a son, Jace, age 8.

LOCAL NEWS Ursa Farmers Cooperative Work Progressing

Work is rapidly moving forward on all parts of the Ursa Farmers Cooperative project. The superstructure of the conveyor has been assembled on the support towers and the portion of the conveyor that will cross over the railroad tracks was put in place on Friday morning, Sept. 14. This stretch of the conveyor will be completely enclosed as per the agreement with BNFL. When completed, the conveyor will carry 30,000 bushels of grain per hour. The conveyor will be a little over 1,100 feet long and clears the levee by 23 feet and the rail road track by 45 feet.

BNFL provided flagman as part of the safety team for the day. Jim Upchurch, one of the project’s consultants, said “This step was one of the most important for the conveyor system and a credit to the millwrights, concrete people, BNFL, USDACE, UFC staff and the builders involved with this project.”

Canton R-V Board Minutes The School Board approved High School Guidance Counselor, Kelli Oliver as the ELL, ESL and Homeless Coodinator.

The School Board accepted the resignation of Lindsay Uhlmeyer as the National Honor Society Sponsor.

The School Board approved LaWanda Losey as the National Honor Society Sponsor.

There was a bus evacuation and fire drill, which had a good outcome from both.

There was a food service inspection

and no concerns were made.

High School Principal Jesse Uhlmeyer did a Power Point presentation for the school board on MAP results.

The School Board voted to support the NEMO Health Insurance Consortium and change to Forrest T. Jones as of January 1. A representative from Forrest T. Jones will explain the plan at a later date.

The School Board had a second reading of the MCE Board Policies and Regulations updates.

Substitute teachers were approved by the School Board.

First District American Legion Memorial Service A Service of Remembrance was observed by members of the Missouri First District American Legion Auxiliary held Sunday, August 5, 2012 during the meetings of the Missouri First District Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units in Hannibal.

Missouri First District American Legion Auxiliary President, Victoria Ornelas, of the Hannibal Unit presided over the memorial service as First District Chaplain Emilie Florea offered prayer and a time of devotion with each Unit recognizing the service of deceased members.

Missouri First District officers and Lewis County Memorial Post 578 Auxiliary member Linda Schmitz joined President Ornelas during special recognition of LaVeta Stith, Past President of the

Lewis County Memorial Post 578 Auxiliary and Past Missouri Department President of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Unit members of LaBelle Post 200 taking part in the service included Mary Florea, Linda Florea and Heather Grawe as they recognized the dedication and service to veterans by Anna Lee Runyon, Charlotte Cawthorne, Mary Jo Hamilton, and Imogene Homrighausen.

As Unit members placed a single white calla lily in a blue vase, the name of each member and their years of service were reflected upon.

A short business meeting followed the service of remembrance, which then adjourned to a time of fellowship and a meal with the American Legion Post members.

C-SC Coffee Shop Opens To Public Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for new Culver-Stockton Coffee Shop, The Lab, to be held Sept. 19 The Student Government Association (SGA) is hosting a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at CulverStockton in the recently completed coffee shop, The Lab, located in the Carl Johann Memorial Library. Starting at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept.

19, the even will have half an hour of mingling, followed by the official

ceremony beginning at 4 p.m. Coffee beverages and food will be available for free to sample, as well as a menu discount on other items. This even is open to students, faculty and community members. Both the Canton and Quincy Chambers of Commerce will be in attendance.

Constructed in what used to be a chemistry laboratory, The Lab has stunning views of Canton, the Mississippi River and the countryside. The science theme has been incorporated throughout the coffee shop. The location is equipped with a stage, stage lighting a sound system, a projector and screen and two con-

ference rooms. There is a full drink and food menu available, including hot and iced coffees, smoothies and a variety of wraps, sandwiches and pastries.

The Lab will be available for rent for members of the community.

The shop is open to the public the following hours: Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.- 10:30 p.m.; Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 4p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.

This was discussed at great length and it was agreeable to have a contract drawn up by ADM to cover two harvest seasons starting this year with a chip and seal being done by the city’s employees, culverts being put in at two spots by ADM. Mayor Hackemack discussed the proposed ordinance to prohibit parking on the north and south side of Hwy 6 between fourth and third street. This was discussed and a motion was made by Alderman Benny Kaylor not to pass the ordinance, seconded

FOR THE RECORD Obituary EDWARD FRANK BERHORST Mr. Edward Frank Berhorst, age 74, of Williamstown, Mo., died Sept. 10, 2012 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill. He was born Oct. 6, 1937, in Linn, Mo., a son of John Frank and Regina Gertrude Warden Berhorst.

He married Marie Foster on April 23, 1956 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Canton. She survives.

Obituary DONALD W. ANCELL Donald Wayne Ancell, 72, of Huntsville, Mo., died Tuesday morning at Landmark Hospital in Columbia. He had been in failing health. Don was born November 13, 1939 in Middle Grove, Mo., to Thomas Arthur, Sr., and Mary Lee (Epperly) Ancell.

Don served in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1967. He then worked for the railroad before joining the Missouri Highway Patrol- where he worked in Lewis Co., retiring in 1994 with the rank of Sergeant. He was then elected Randolph County Sheriff in 1996, serving until 2004. He was a member of the Missouri National Guard and the Higbee United Methodist Church.

He married Peggy Rogers on September 6, 1961 in Higbee, Mo., and she survives. Also surviving are two

He served in the Army Reserves in earlier years. He was of the Catholic Faith and had farmed all of his life and drove a truck for Gully and then Gilster Marylee for over 20 years. He loved to hunt, fish and spend time with his grandchildren and playing the guitar.

Survivors include his wife, Marie of Williamstown; four children, Robin (Carrie) Berhorst of Lawson, Mo.; Nancy (Rick) Parrish of Quincy, Ill.; John (Kelly) Berhorst of Canton and Darryl (Gina) Berhorst of Canton; grandchildren, Steven Berhorst of Columbia, Mo., Meghan Jesse of Kansas City, Mo., and Jack Berhorst of Lawson, Lisa Parrish of Quincy, Brandon, Brittney, Dylan and Dalton Berhorst all of Canton, Lora (Mike) Wilson of Canton, Joe (Tauri) Berhorst of Canton; great grandchildren, Danny, Breeanna and Trent Wilson, Dale and Ashlynn Berhorst and Jack Berhorst; four brothers, Frank (Betty) Berhorst of Canton, Theodore (Donna) Berhorst of Canton, Fred (Sharon) Berhorst of Quincy and Lee (Nadine) Berhorst of Canton; one sister, Matilda Francis of Albert Lee Minn.; sister in law, Arlene Ber-

horst of St. Charles, Mo., and many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog Gracie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Steve, daughter-in-law Kellie Berhorst.

Funeral services were held Sept. 14, 2012 at Davis Funeral Home in Canton with Father Basil Eruo officiating. Burial was in Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton.

Pallbearers: Steven, Brandon, Jack, Dylan, Joe and Dalton Berhorst, Alvin Vaughn and Dr. Larry Wiggins.

Obituary RADA JANE YOWELL Rada Jane (Tucker) Yowell passed away on Sept. 2, 2012. Yowell was born January 18, 1933 in Kirksville, Missouri, and passed away in Albuquerque, N.M. She graduated with a degree in nursing from Blessing Hospital School of Nursing in Quincy, Ill., and accepted a position on the surgical staff at City Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. She also worked at Mercy Hosptial in Orlando, Fla., and Lincoln County Medical Center in Ruidoso, N.M. She married Stanley Yowell in Canton, Mo., in April of 1955 and had five children.

Jane loved the field of medicine and inspired her colleagues wherever she worked. Her healing gifts were well known; she nursed anything from orphaned baby bunnies to her newborn grandchildren and their nervous mothers. She could hold her own in conversation with the best regarding surgery, anatomy, botany, psychology, religion and politics.

Jane was a woman of substanceâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;confident and generous with her intellect, compassion, influence and courage. She had sufficient vitality to tackle a career and corral five children, often on her own since her husband traveled for his profession. She loved gardening, but she did not have a green thumb; she had a green body and a creative imagination that gained her a status of high regard with friends and neighbors.

One brother, five children and six amazing grandchildren survive her.

Additionally, she had a chile relleno recipe that was to die for, but Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease is what took this special soul to her final peace.

ROBERTA HAGERBAUMER Roberta (Nelson) Hagerbaumer, 67, Black Canyon City, Ariz., formerly of Ewing, Mo., went to be with the Lord on September 2, 2012 in Phoenix, Ariz.

She was born May 9, 1945 in Kirksville, Mo., to Floyd and Opal (West) Nelson. She married Chet Hagerbaumer in Steffenville, Mo on September 29, 1963. Roberta had worked in several shoe stores and sold Artex, Tupperware and Sarah Coventry Jewelry through the years. She enjoyed sewing, playing piano and her grandchildren were the highlight of her life.

Surviving are three children: Terry (Kim) Hagerbaumer, Leanna (Tim) Allison & Lisa (Brad) Broughton.

Grandchildren: Christopher (Jenny) Hagerbaumer, Megan Allison, Alysa Broughton & Molly Allison. Greatgrandchildren: Nickolaus Hagerbaumer, Avauri Clayvon & a great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by siblings, Judith Hager and Keith Nelson, a sister-in-law, Betty Hagerbaumer and brother-in-law Raymond Garner, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Audrey Garner and niece Leangela Porter.

Services were Friday, September 7 at Heritage Funeral Chapel in Peoria, Ariz., with interment following in Dewey, Ariz.

A memorial service to celebrate Robertaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life will be held on Saturday, September 29 from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. at The Crossing 150 S 48th Quincy, Ill. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family. The funds will be used for a tribute at Mayo Clinicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s - Sherman Hospice Home in Phoenix, Ariz., to honor Roberta.

Hannibal Regional Hospital Foundation will host the the second annual Kickinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Cancer Kickball Tournament at Bear Creek Sports Park on Saturday, October 6 beginning at 8 am. The Kickinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Cancer event is designed to raise awareness of the fight against all forms of cancer as well as assist those who are currently fighting against cancer.

Teams will compete for a traveling trophy. Teams are co-ed with at least three females on the field at all times. Concessions will be available from the Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary. The tournament is a double elimination tournament so each team is guaranteed at least two games.

All proceeds from the Kickinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Cancer Kickball Tournament will benefit the James E. Cary Cancer Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Life. Light. Hope. Fund, which offers cancer patients assistance with transportation, nutritional supplements and other resources needed as they fight against cancer.

Additional funds are used to assist families and patients with equipment and resources they need which can offer them hope and help when they need it most.

Knox City had a few family move into the Thelma Higgins home there in town recently, they are related to Elvin Ray Strange. Got to visit with him as he came but he lives in Emden,Mo. Pat and Jerry Shultz of Rutledge was grand marshalls of the Cornfest this year. Pat has 41 years in 4-H work.

They have been married over 50 years. They used Robert Papeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of Colony, red 94 convertible.Their youngest granddaughter rode with them.

R.D. Pape of Colony took his grandson Auston Lawrence of LaPlata to the Kirksville Air Show on Sunday.

Knox County Cornfest was this past weekend, hope everyone had a good time as its a lot of work getting ready for it and takes more workers than they can seem to get. LaVeta Wolter and Nancy Shouse setup again this year and sold lots of rugs.

Riley Wolter of Knox City won first place in the baby show, he is LaVeta and my great grandson.We got to keep him for an hour or so, while his older brother Ryan took in the carnival they had this year. All the little kids really enjoyed the rides.

Gloria Meyer and sister Elianor Iray Insecto and husband Al of San Jose, Calif. visited their family in the Philippines.They saw Baraccy Island, Kalibo and Manilla but spent most of the time in their home town of Malino, Aklan. Besides quality time with family they enjoyed the native food, tropical fruit, freshfish and white sand beaches with clear water.

Charlotte Miner and Myrna Hoteling joined JB at the Village Inn for lunch and visiting on Monday. All shared memories of their departed friend, Vivian Beilstein.

Phyllis and Russell Heindselman entertained their son in law, Roger Fast and son Corey and friend for supper. On Thursday Phyllis joined friends of the Quincy Symphony for lunch and visiting.

The Men of the La Grange Lions Club took their wives to supper at the Avenue of the Saints in Canton, Saturday evening. This is a yearly affair to show their appreciation for the help and support given to them and their benifits for the community.

DILEMMA! The last few years the La Grange Garden Club has held a Monarch butterfly tagging event in the fall before they make their journey to winter in Mexico . This year the club is having difficulty finding Monarch. If you should have some in your garden and would let them tag them they would appreciate it. Jim, Ruth and Melissa Shutwell attended the IA State Fair. On the weekend they were guest at the wedding of Jimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cousin, Laura Briney to Jeremy Whight in Rock Island. They remained for the reception, stayed over night and returned home the following day.

Buckley McCutchan spent 4 days visiting in the area.

Buckley is an over the road truck for Werners. He visited his Mom, Tina and Dad Steve, Brother Hunter, Crystal, Chevelle and Tucker, Uncle Tim Hoteling, Aunt Janet, Stan and Charlotte Miner and Grandmothers, Rosie McCutchan and Myrna Hoteling.

Curtis Farr visited Mrs. Donna McCutchan who is a patient in Blessing Hospital.Curtis also had an enjoyable visit with Patty Waterman at Good Smaratin Home.

Stan and Charlotte Miner visited his Uncle Fred and wife Maxine Tarpein in Hannibal to say their good bys.

They also called on her brother Steve and wife Linda McDowell in New London and her brother Brad and wife Deb, Jordan and Caleb on Sunday.

Jim and Cathy Luders of Cedar Rapids, IA visited from Labor Day until Wednesday in the home of Larry and Dorothy Gillespie, Pam and Courtney Stewart.

Alice Solter was among friends and family who gathered Sunday afternoon to celebrate Thelma Clarks birthday at the Lewis County Nursing Home.

Ed and Janet Gaus and Stan and Charlotte Miner enjoyed supper at t Canton. The women made friends with the bull.

Tina McCutchan and sons Buckley and Hunter enjoyed a steak cookout Saturday evening. Also present were Crystal, Chevelle and Tucker McCutchan.

David and Donna Stice took his mother Geraldine and her mother Viola Tracy when they went to Paris, MO for the baptism of Declin Bush. Declin is the son of CJ and Micca Bush.

Bert and Pat Cottrell enjoyed a football game Palmyra had against Center Tuesday night where they were victorious. Both Braxden and Broyden Neil are members of the team. Their brother Brady performed with the band and sister Teddi was a cheerleader. Teddi went to Springfield for a duty of the 64th Lt. Gov NE district Key Club.

For over 100 years it has stood proudly at the corner of Fourth and Skinner. Like old buildings and people for that matter time took its toll and this year 2012 the old Christian Church will be no more. For 53 years I have been a neighbor and shall miss it but the congergation continues in their new church home built in 1998.

Sunday, on Grandparents Day, Bill and Quinn Stalder surprised Billâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother, Charilyn Stalder, and attended church with her. After the service they had lunch at the Saints Cafe in Canton and visited with other friends that were there for lunch.

A number of neighbors and friends attended the funeral visitation for Ellison Eichor on Wednesday.

Mr. Eichor had been a long time farmer in the Hester area and was good neighbor and gentleman. His memorial service was on Wednesday morning.

Thursday Charilyn Stalder went to the Friendship Mission in Des Moines, Iowa.This is a missionary outreach of the Southern Baptist Mission Board and 17 people from the Wyaconda/Mt.Salem Association went to help with sorting hygiene products, clothes, toys. books,outside yard work and repairs. The mission also has an after school program for children and youth.

Bobby and Rachel Bringer Shepherd went to parents weekend on Saturday. They attended the engineerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s barb-cue and had a nice visit with their son, Dalton.

South Union Baptist Church enjoyed lunch after the worship service on Sunday morning. It was a special time of sharing with Jeremy and Rachel Wallace with a baby shower. They received many nice gifts and everyone enjoyed the fellowship. The shower was given by Phyllis Eisenberg, Charilyn Stalder, and Loretta Bringer.

Marvin Bringer attended a sale with his friend Gene Trautvetter on Wednesday in Carthage and Loretta Bringer had orientation for new members of the Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary in the afternoon.

Emma Brinkman celebrated her first birthday with a party given by her parents, Nikki and Craig Brinkman.

Attending were her grandparents, Darrell and Phyllis Eisenberg, Randy and Sandy Brinkman, and great grandparents, Russ and Rita Terstriep, and Leroy and Virginia Brinkman. OATS Bus members OATS Bus members met at Canton on September 7.

Norman and Frances Adams drove the buses. The group talked about how important it is to clip articles about OATS from the newspaper and submit them. They also discussed the No Show Show and the planned trip to Branson in November. They also talked about trip to Knox County, Memphis and Rutledge. Final plans were made for Lewistown Appreciation Day, the group planned to be in the parade and have an informational booth in the park.

Attending were Jeanette Buragus,Mary Edmonston, Leta Gaus, Patsy Geery, Lucille Gillespie, Mary Kay Myers, Marie Scoggin and Edith Schmuck.

Progressive Neighbors The Progressive Neighbors Club met Sept. 11 at the home of Marilyn Job, with seven members and two guests, donna Johns and Kerry Williams present.

President Kay Dodd opened the meeting leading the pledge which was flying at half-staff in remembrance of 9-11. Marilyn Job read the devotional. The club has lost a special lady, Betty Hendrickson, so roll call was answered with fond memories of her.

The club members visited and played games and refreshments were served. The next meeting will be Oct. 9. Members are to meet at the Saints Avenue Cafe for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Cherilyn Williams will be hostess.

Pleasant Grove 4-H Pleasant Grove 4-H held a meeting on Sept. 12 at the Centenary Church. Five new members attended.

Enrollment forms were handed out. Community Service ideas were discussed. Members elected new officers: President â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Katie Elder, V. President â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Jackson Barry, Secretary â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Jaclyn Sweet, Treasurer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Alex George, Reporter â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Tyler Hinton, Game/Song Leaders â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Gabe Hackemack and Karson Lay. Club leader is Lola Brumbaugh. Co-Assistant leaders are Patty Foust and Kristy Elder.

Happy Birthday was sung to members with August and September birthdays. Members played ball outside after the meeting. Next meeting will be Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Centenary Church.

Hannibal Regional Hospital Hosts Sleep Matters The Hannibal Regional Hospital Sleep Lab is hosting a Sleep Matters meeting on Thursday, September 13 at 6pm in conference room A/B. Dr. Alex Kosloff, Internist with Hannibal Regional Medical Group, will be speaking on the relationship between diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea. Refreshments and prizes will be provided. The public is invited.

COMMUNITY NEWS 4-H Members Strut Their Stuff at State Monica and Jessica Campen of Lewis County were two of 121 Missouri youth that participated in a clothing construction and consumerism contest during the State 4-H Fashion Revue held Sept. 8 on the University of Missouri Campus.

“This contest is designed to be fun, while helping youth enhance their skills and knowledge about sewing, garment selection, knitting and crochet and the importance of setting and achieving goals, “ said Alison Copeland, MU 4-H Youth Specialist. “State Fashion Revue is also about exposing young people to the research, education and other efforts MU is doing in these areas. We want them to see what they might be able to do with their interests at a university like MU.” The participants, ranging in age from 8-18, participated in a local fashion revue competition either in their county or regional area that qualified them to participate in the state contest. Monica Campen placed first in the Clothes You Make- Senior Formal Division and received a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. Jessica Campen placed fifth in the Clothes You Buy- Senior Division.

Fashion Revue participants also gathered in the Memorial Union on campus to learn about other topics such as public speaking and to participate in a service learning project that included making 35 weighted blankets for children with autism.

The participants learned about developmental disabilities and experienced the satisfaction that comes from helping others.

On Friday, Sept. 14, the Eagles Club held a charity benefit which was a spaghetti dinner and karaoke.

Luttrell Presents At Sportsmanship Summit The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHAA) is the association over all the high school activities- from Softball to Quiz bowl. Ashton Luttrell has been in the student advisory committee for MSHAA for three years now. Her sophomore year, Luttrell filled out an application and was chosen to represent the northeast region of the state.

On Aug. 11, Luttrell joined other representatives from the state in a Sportsmanship Summit.

When Luttrell arrived, she had every intention of doing her part to assist in putting on the presentations for those who

attended the Summit, but after partaking in a few meetings, she was told she’d be presenting alone.

Ashton’s presentation was focused on teamwork. She explained that the majority of the presentation was teaching team bonding outside the court and field, and added that she learned a lot of ideas that her school, Highland, could use that would be very beneficial. When asked if she would suggest other interested students to join the MSHAA program, Luttrell responded with, “(Yes), it’s a really good opportunity. ”

The second seeded Canton Lady Tigers ran into a roadblock on their way to a Paris Tournament title on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Lady Tigers fell to seventh seeded South Shelby Lady Cardinals 11-2. Canton led 2-0 before the Lady Cardinals went on a run and scored 11 runs sending Canton to the left side of the bracket.

Finding themselves in the consolation bracket, the Lady Tigers breezed through Community R-VI 10-1 and then blanked North Shelby in the Consolation Final 9-0.

Community R-VI The teams played scoreless ball through three innings before a fourth inning uprising saw Canton put up a six spot on the scoreboard.

In the fourth inning, Kayla Merrell stroked a single up the middle; Berhorst added a liner over the shortstop and the Lady Tigers had runners at the corner. After Berhorst stole second, Phillips ripped a 2 double to left deep to the fence to score two more Lady Indians and give Canton an 8-0 lead.

ning, Katie Rarick walked, stole second and scored on a passed ball third strike to Emma McKinstry, that when the dust cleared found McKinstry on second and Rarick scoring.

Merrell roped a liner down the first base line for an RBI single and Canton led 10-0.

Community R-VI added a harmless run in the bottom of the last inning and Canton advanced to the consolation final versus North Shelby.

North Shelby Canton plated the only runs they would need in the first inning as Jensen Crenshaw singled and easily trotted home on Kayla Merrell’s long triple to the fence. Brittney Berhorst ripped an infield single and then stole second and Canton had runners on second and third. Allison Phillips lifted a long fly ball to left and Merrell scored on the RBI sacrifice fly and a 2-0 Canton lead they would never relinquish.

First baseman Baalman made an over-the-shoulder running catch to end the game and Canton received the Paris tournament Consolation Trophy.

Although no major battles were fought in the immediate area, several local conflicts happened and there are many interesting places in the area that are rich with Civil War history.

Over 600,000 soldiers died in the war. Many Civil War veterans are buried in local cemeteries. Northeast Missouri was home to soldiers who represented the Union and the Confederacy.

Great Uncle, composer of TAPS

GENERAL DANIEL BUTTERFIELD RITA COX REPORTER rita1@lewispnj.com Lorna Elizabeth Mae (Pat) Butterfield Schramm Karr has a interesting Civil War connection. She is a direct descendant of General Daniel Butterfield, her great-uncle, is credited for composing TAPS and her grandfather, Miles Butterfield, was in 31 Battles and as a member of General Wheaton’s staff, signaled Lee’s surrender to the Army of the Potomac at Appomattox.

Mrs. Karr is an active 92 year old who resides in Wisconsin. She has a friend who had relatives in LaGrange, Mo. In a telephone interview, she recalls her greatgrandfather, Miles Butterfield in her early childhood.

She remembers him as being very old and the family always talking about “The War”. General Daniel Butterfield, her great-uncle, died in the early 1900s before she was born. The history of the Butterfield’s services during the Civil War is well documented in various history books and other sources, According to the website About.com, up to the Civil War, the traditional call at day’s end was a tune, borrowed from the French, called Lights Out. In July of 1862, in the aftermath of the bloody Seven Days battles, hard on the loss of 600 men and wounded himself, Union General Daniel Adams Butterfield called the brigade bugler to his tent. He thought “Lights Out” was too formal and he wished to honor his men. Oliver Wilcox Norton, the bugler, tells the story, “...showing me some notes on a staff written in pencil on the back of an envelope, (he) asked me to sound them on my bugle.

I did this several times, playing the music as written.

He changed it somewhat, lengthening some notes and shortening others, but retaining the melody as he first gave it to me. After getting it to his satisfaction, he directed me to sound that call for Taps thereafter in place of the regulation call. The music was beautiful on that

still summer night and was heard far beyond the limits of our Brigade. The next day I was visited by several buglers from neighboring Brigades, asking for copies of the music which I gladly furnished. The call was gradually taken up through the Army of the Potomac.”

Mrs. Karr’s recollection of the family story passed down has a little unknown twist. She said a story the family always told was that General Grant would call out to his staff, which included the Butterfields, during some of the campaigns, when he wanted some whiskey brought to him, in a singing voice he would shout “Butter-field, But-ter-field”, to the tune of Taps.

According to the website usmemorialday.org another story is that in July 1862, after the Seven Days battles at Harrison’s Landing (near Richmond), Virginia, the wounded Commander of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, V Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, General Daniel Butterfield reworked, with his bugler Oliver Wilcox Norton, another bugle call, “Scott Tattoo,” to create Taps. He thought that the regular call for Lights Out was too formal. Taps was adopted throughout the Army of the Potomac and finally confirmed by orders. Soon other Union units began using Taps, and even a few Confederate units began using it as well. After the war, Taps became an official bugle call. Col. James A. Moss, in his Officer’s Manual first published in 1911, gives an account of the initial use of Taps at a military funeral: “During the Peninsular Campaign in 1862, a soldier of Tidball’s Battery A of the 2nd Artillery was buried at a time when the battery occupied an advanced position concealed in the woods. It was unsafe to fire the customary three volleys over the grave, on account of the proximity of the enemy, and it occurred to Capt. Tidball that the sounding of Taps would be the most appropriate ceremony that could be substituted.”

Other stories of the origin of Taps exist. A popular one is that of a Northern boy who was killed fighting for the south. His father, Robert Ellicombe a Captain in the Union Army, came upon his son’s body on the battlefield and found the notes to Taps in a pocket of the dead boy’s Confederate uniform. When Union General Daniel Sickles heard the story, he had the notes sounded at the boy’s funeral. There is no evidence to back up the story or the existence of Captain Ellicombe, As with many other customs, this solemn tradition continues today. Although Butterfield merely revised an earlier bugle call, his role in producing those 24 notes gives him a place in the history of music as well as the history of war.

WORDS TO TAPS There are no “official” words to Taps, but this verse is the most popular.

Day is done, gone the Sun, From the hills, from the lake, From the skies.

All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

MILES BUTTERFIELD Signalled Lee surrender...

Colonel Miles L. Butterfield, 1st Division 6th Army, was a member of General Wheaton’s staff. A written documentation of his war recollections, authored by Miles Butterfiled in 1904, was provided by Mrs. Pat Karr, his great-granddaughter.

Miles Butterfield was born in 1837 in Ohio, moving to Indiana at a young age and then at age 18 to Waukesha, Wisc.

Miles Butterfield wrote” At the breaking out of the Civil War, I enlisted in a company being raised by I.M. Bean ( called the Waukesha Union Guards) on May 10, 1861, which company was assigned to the 5th Reg’t,

These Civil War articles can be found at the Flower Mill and Trading Post in Canton. Shown is a flask soldiers carried, a belt knife, used for fighting and utility. Guns shown are an Allen Wheelock, Smith and Wesson #2 Army, one of the first cartridge guns in pistols, mainly used by the North and a pistol usually carried in the boot. The Flower Mill and Trading Post has many other guns and Civil War artifacts on display along with articles from other conflicts.

Wis. Vol. As Co. “F” and I was appointed Orderly Sergeant. The company went in camp at Madison (Camp Randall) June 20, 1861 and on the 24th of July left for Washington D.C. The winter was spent in camp at Arlington Heights and on March 10, 1862 went with the army of the Potomac on the Peninsula Campaign under Gen’l Geo. B. McClellan. May 4, Co. “F” had the first man wounded at Lee’s Mills. Took part in the battle of Williamsburg, May 5, 1862, whee it was said the 5th Wis. Saved the day and elicited the only speech Gen’l McClellan ever made to a command.

Was in all the movements of the Peninsula Campaign.

Leaving the Peninsula in Aug. 1862, for Washington in order to check Ge. Lee’s career in Maryland and was under constant fire until after the Battle of South Mountain and Antietam, Sept. 17, 1862 and three days later at Crampton’s Gap. Next in order was the Battle of Fredericksburg, Va., that lasted three days, Dec. 1862, which was known at “Burnsides Stick in the Mud.” Returned to camp near Falmouth and remained until the Spring of 1863, then taking part in the Northern Virginia, Maryland and Pa. Campaign, which included the battle of Gettysburg, July 1,2 and 3, 1863.

Returning to the Army of the Potomac to Va., and on the 31st of July, the Reg’t was sent to New York to assist in the draft of the state arriving at Gov’s Island, Aug. 2 and during our stay on the island, I had charge of Fort Williams and all the prisoners, amounting to several hundred at times.

Returning to the Army of the Potomac, Oct. 15. Arriving at Washington on the 17th and at the front at Fairfax Station, Va. In the afternoon of the 18th.

Participated in the Battle at Rappahannock Station, Nov. 7, 1863, with a loss of nine officers and 54 men.

Remaining in camp during the winter and until May 4, 1864, when the Wilderness campaign came on. It lasted eight days with a loss to the Reg’t of 294 officers and men out of 450 officers and men for duty. Following this was Cold Harbor, June 2, losing 28 more. Leaving the Army of the Potomac, July 10, 1864, to assist in the defense of Washington when attacked by Gen’l Early.

Where there the term of three years men, expired and they were sent home. The Veterans who has re-enlisted were formed into a Battalion of 3 companies with myself in command.

Leaving Washington with the 6th Corps, marched toward the Shenandoah Valley, passing through the Blue Ridge at Snicker’s Gap. Arrived in the Valley on the 18 of July, 1864.

MILES BUTTERFIELD...

Contined from Pg. 2D fighting, the Union army endeavoring to keep between Lee and Washington. Nothing of importance occurred until the Battle of Opequon or Winchester, Sept.

9, 1864.

On Sept 20, the army moved to Middletown, leaving our Battalion at Winchester to do Provo duty with Gen’l Edwards as Provost Marshal and myself as assistant.One month later, Oct. 18, Gen’l Sheridan stopped at our Headquarters on his return from Washington and the following morning made that famous ride.

Was relieved from Provost duty on the arrival of Col. Allen with seven new companies from the state and reorganized the 5 Reg’t again and was then sent to the front.

I remained with the Reg’t, holding school of instruction and drilling the new officers and men until Dec. 1, 1864, when the 6th corps was sent to City Point by way of Washington and Fountain Manor- arrived at City Point Dec. 6 and joined the army again at Warren’s Station the following day and went into Winter Quarters.

Took part in the battle of Natchez Run, Feb. 5, 1865.

I was appointed Engineer of the 1st Division, 6th Army Corps on the staff of Maj. Gen Frank Wheaton; had charge of all the works in the division front and was busily engaged until April 2, 1865, when the city of Petersburg was captured.

After the surrender of Petersburg, Apr. 3, the Army of he Potomac followed the enemy, making some very hard marches on the 4th and 5th, overtaking them on the 6th when they made a stand at Little Sailor’s creek. April 7 was in the advance on the march to Farmville. On the 8th with Gen’ l Grant in the advance and received flag of truce from Gen’l Lee, asking terms of surrender.

April 9 our Division led the army and was in the extreme at the time of surrender and I gave the signal of Surrender to the Army of the Potomac after the Council of Gen’ls Grant and Lee at Appomattox. On the 11th returned to Burksville Jct. 52 miles on the evening of the 12th.

On the evening of the 15th received sad news of the assassination of President Lincoln, and on the 16th the notice of his death.

April 23, 6th corps was ordered to Danville to head off Gen. Johnston, a march of 105 miles.

Returned to Burksville Jct. May 5, 1865, and on the 17th left for Washington by way of Richmond and over some of the old Battle fields- arriving at Alexandria, camped on Nalls Hills about 1 miles from Washington, June 2, 1865.

The 6th Corps was reviewed by the President in Washington on June 8, 1865. On the 24th I received orders from War dep’t to report with the Reg’t to Gen’l Logan at Louisville, Ky. On 25th left Washington by way of Harper’s Ferry and Parkersburg, arriving at Louisville, July1, remained until 11th when Reg’t was mustered out and ordered to Madison, Wis. On July 19 was discharged and returned home.

Term of Service- 4 years, 2 months, 19 days.

Participated in the following battles:- Williamstown, Va., May 5 1862; Seven Pines and Fair Oaks, Va., May 31; June 1, 1862. Mechanicsville, June 26; Gaines’s Mill, June 27; Savage Station, June 28; White Oak Swamp, June 28; Melvern Hill, July 1, 1862; Gredericksburg, Va., Dec. 13, 1862; Fredericksburg and Marye’s Heights, May 3, 1863; Chancellorsville, Va., May 4; Franklin’s Crossing, June 5; and Gettysburg, July 1,2,3, 1863; Rappahannock Station, Nov. 7, 1863; Mine Run, Nov. 26; Wilderness, Va., May 5, 6, 7, 1864; Spottsylvania, May 8, 9, 10 1864; Cedar Creek, Va., Oct. 19; Hatchie’s Run, Feb. 5, 1865; Capture of Petersburg, Va. In 6th. Reg’t., U.S.A. From War dept.; but declined it.

Mrs. Karr has her grandfather’s diary along with several other artifacts and papers. The Waukesha Wisconsin Historical Society also has many articles and artifacts about her ancestors. An event was held commemorating the 100th anniversary of the war in the 1960’s and Mrs. Karr was asked to fire the cannon. She had to wear an authentic uniform, wool with 6 inch hems, which she said was very uncomfortable and she can’t imagine the soldiers having to wear them, especially in the hot weather of the south.

Ten popular movies about Civil War times 1. The Civil War- Ken Burns’ nine part 1989 PBS documentary series.

2. Gettysburg. Based on Michael Shaara’s historical novel, “The Killer Angels” and filmed on the actual battlefield.

10. North and the South. A three-part, mini-series that aired on ABC in 1985, 1986, 1994, and focuses on the relationship between a Northern and a Southern officer who were friends at West Point, but enemies in the war.

FAMOUS CIVIL WAR HORSES During the Civil War, horses were an important part of the war. They were used by the cavalry, to move supplies and weapons, carry wounded and casualties and as personal transportation.

Due to the fame of their riders many horses also were made famous. The following is a list of ten of the more famous horses according to the website history.com.

Ajax: was ridden by Robert E. Lee early in the war.

Ajax was returned to the farm as Lee considered the horse too big for his use.

Brown Roan: another horse used by Lee early in the war. Brown Roan was considered too skittish and not up to the strains of battle.

Traveler: Robert E. Lee’s favorite and most famous horse. The animal is buried at Washington and Lee University.

Old Sorrel: the favorite of Stonewall Jackson. It’s skeleton is preserved at the VMI museum in Lexington.

Sam: ridden by General Sherman. This fast horse was wounded several times in battle and died in 1884.

Dolly: the favorite of William T. Sherman until it was stolen.

Black Bess: ridden by Confederate general John Hunt Morgan Virginia: ridden by Jeb Stuart at Gettysburg Don Juan: ridden by General Custer in the Grand Review of the armies Curtis Lee: ridden by Gen. George Custer. The horse survived the war but was later accidentally killed in a buffalo hunt.

Civil War Monument in LaGrange Washington Park

Quilt rescued from Kansas Raid RITA COX REPORTER rita1@lewispnj.com Colleen Brown of LaGrange has a quilt that is one of the artifacts that survived Quantrill’s Raid on Lawrence Kan. The town was almost totally destroyed, many homes and businesses were looted and burnt. The raid took the lives of over 150 men.

The Lawrence Massacre, also know as Quantrill’s Raid was a rebel guerrilla attack during the Civil War . William Quantrill led the attack on the pro-Union town on August 21, 1863. The town was targeted due to the city’s support of abolition and its reputation as a center for Jayhawkers and Redlegs, which were free-state militia and vigilante groups known for attacking and destroying farms and plantations in Missouri’s proslavery western counties.

It is believed that the Quantrill Raid was in retaliation for the Union’s attack on Oscelola, Mo., in Sept, 1861, where Osceloa was invaded and nine men court marital and executed. Several other Missouri towns and places in the Missouri countryside had been similarly plundered and burned by Unionist forces from Kanas. On August 21, 1863, Quantrill led his band of about 450 men into Lawrence, Kansas and over the course of a few hours, the town suffered major losses.

Coleen Brown, who is the librarian in LaGrange, is an avid quilter. While living in Pensecola, Fla., she held quilting meetings at a local school. The custodian at that school, Mr. Peavey, would listen to the stories about restoring old quilts and gave the quilt to Ms. Brown.

Peavey said the quilt had been in his family for years and it was a survivor of Quantill’s raid in Lawrence, Kan. Quantrill’s men, looted the town, taking most all of the possessions of the citizens.

unknown, because the raiders took everything, and what they didn’t take was burnt.

The quilt is an unknown pattern, with the colors of brown, red, and tan and beige. The material is worn in many places, especially where it had been folded. The quilt has a cotton batting, and many of the older quilts have cotton seeds in the batting.

Brown pointed out a custom of quilters, which is the belief that only God is perfect, so on most quilts the maker purposely makes a mistake, such as an upside down block, or a small pattern that doesn’t exactly match the other part. Many quilters still follow that practise.

Brown also recommends rolling quilts up, instead of folding to prevent wear and if it is folded, refold in a different way every so often to reduce the wear.

Coleen Brown is well known for her quilting abilities.

She has over 50 quilts and has made hundreds She admires their beauty and respects the history of each item.

Park in LaGrange. The City of LaGrange approved erection of the monument Sept. 15, 1868 “to the deceased soldiers of Lewis County.”

When the war was over, plans were made to bring the community back together as one. Although the monument was requested by the wives and mothers of Union soldiers, it was dedicated to all Lewis County men that lost their lives in the Civil War. There are 50 Civil War veterans buried in Riverview and Marks Cemeteries in LaGrange.

In 2005, the City of LaGrange, along with the Flags for Vets committee rededicated the monument after it had been cleaned by Steven Leicht of St. Louis, representing the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, W.S. Grant Camp 368. The group said it was unusual to have a monument in a city park, most are in cemeteries or near government grounds.

The monument has a limestone base and the monument is marble, which depicts a cannon barrel with a vine wreath wrapping around it, symbolizing peace. At one time the monument was taller, with some some of ornamentation on top, probably an eagle.

A wrought iron fence was placed around the monument in 2005 to further preserve this historic piece of American history.

A war monument dedicated to all branches of the military was funded by the Flags for Vets committee a few years ago and stands in the northwest corner of the park.
