CANTON PARKS BOARD TO HOLD MEETING The Canton Parks Board is seeking citizen input on how to develop a park at the property at Brose and Wyaconda Streets, near the Comfort Inn Motel.

A meeting for the citizen input will be Tuesday, September 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the area of the property, where boundaries of the park will be discussed, as well as some current plans.

In the event of rain, the meeting will be held at the Comfort Inn meeting room.

We could not reach the fire without crossing the levee and the levee is too high and wide to get a truck over it, so we

Heavy smoke can be seen from a fire that Canton Fire Department responded to on Route P, Canton on August 24. At about the same time, the LaGrange Fire Department was called to a cornfield fire, south of LaGrange. Residents are reminded that a burn ban is still in place in Lewis County.

LaGrange Fire Chief Henry Gunsauls reported that the LaGrange Fire Department was dispatched to a corn field fire about three miles east of Highway 61 off of 300th Street, south of LaGrange on Friday, August 24. This call came in a few minutes after Canton Fire department was dispatched for a fire on Route P. The fire consumed about 50 acres of standing corn just west of the levee.

The members of the Lewis County Rural Electric Cooperative met for an evening meeting under the big top tent at the Clark County Fair Grounds on August 2 to celebrate the 75th Annual Meeting.

Emery Geisendorfer Jr., President of the Board of Directors, called the meeting to order. John Bloom, General Manager/CEO, and Jim McCarty, author of “First Lights for Rural Missouri”, both spoke about the history of Lewis County Rural Electric.

Representative Craig Redmon, gave a report and presented a Senate Resolution recognizing Lewis County Rural Electric for 75 years of service to the citizens of Northeast Missouri, on behalf of Senator Brian Munzlinger, who was unable to attend.

There were 490 members registered to vote and 1200 people were served dinner. The members elected three directors to serve a 3 year term to expire in 2015. Re-

Next year’s Annual Meeting will be August 1, 2013 at the Knox County High School Grounds in Edina.

had to stretch hose over the levee. While attacking the fire, the tanker being used to pump the water broke down. We had to call for more assistance, because we now had no way to pump water. We received assistance from Canton who was returning from their call. During

this time the fire advanced out of the woods and onto the levee and back into the woods further down the levee consuming about 3 more acres of wooded area. Assistance was then called for from Maywood, Ewing and Palmyra. “ The call came in about 1 p.m. and we were on scene until about 9

p.m. We had units from Canton, Maywood, Ewing, Palmyra, Monticello Lewis County Ambulance and Marion County Ambulance on scene. All departments had limited man power until later in the evening, which really taxed the members who made the initial response.”

Gunsauls reported.

The property owner is Bob Breckenkamp of Quincy, Ill., and the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

Fire Chief Gunsauls said, “ The problem was that day it has been very dry for months, we had very low humidity, high temperatures and wind.

a very high fire probability.

This is why the entire area is and has been under an open burning ban.

It doesn’t take much of anything to start a fire and the dry conditions will allow it to spread rapidly.

Even the rain we just received over the weekend is not enough to changes these conditions.”

EDITORIAL ADVENTURES OF WONDER MOM After spending one week working some smaller organizational tasks in your home, slowly expand your organization to include larger things, eventually ending in entire rooms. Even if you have to re-organize something because it doesn’t work with the entire room, don’t stress. Everyone organizes differently. It takes time and moving some things around to work out a system that works the best for your family.

Once week one has been completed, do two drawers instead of one, tackle the medicine cabinet or, one of the most dreaded things- organize your closet. My favorite part of my home organization is that it doesn’t have to cost insane amounts of money, and it doesn’t have to look like the homes on HGTV.

LEWIS COUNTY HISTORY All the containers that I bought for my cooking/ baking supplies came from the Family Dollar for a dollar a piece. I keep almost every diaper box our family goes through and re-purpose them as toy boxes, etc. In my daughter’s room, I even turned them on their sides and made a bookshelf out of them. To organize some of my little items, I used the boxes that came from two 3-set candles that I bought from Walmart. I have two little squares

and one longer rectangle.

I used small nails to hang up many of my necklaces.

One of my favorite “no purchase necessary” discoveries was that I could use the little plastic tubs from my daughter’s baby food to organize some of my small crafts (like beads).

Although you should continue working on other parts of your house as well, let the goal of your first month be to have one room completely organized, and continue to keep it that way. Many of us can get ourselves organized but then go right back to throwing things everywhere out of exhaustion. This is what will continue to build the good habits that I wrote about last week. I’m also giving myself the organization challenge as

So far, I’ve cleaned out my purse, taken down my medicine cabinet, cleared out a cabinet to turn into my cooking/baking supplies (flour, sugar, etc.) and organized it by putting them into inexpensive Family Dollar plastic containers, and began reorganizing my linen closet to make room for some of the bathroom items we don’t use everyday. (I want to get them out of

my bedroom.)

My goals for the upcoming week will be to begin going through my daughter’s toy boxes and to donate the toys she no longer plays with. My husband has a tendency to buy her a new toy every time he goes to the store, so our house is overflowing with toys. The room that I would like to have completely organized by the end of the month will be my daughter’s. It will be, most likely, the easiest room to begin with, which I suggest each person who is new to organizing to consider.

From there, I’d like to continue organizing little bit by little bit until I’ve completed my living room, bathroom (linen closet included with bathroom), laundry room, bedroom and kitchen.

BACKWARD GLANCES From the pages of early Lewis County newspapers 25 Years Ago The Press-News Journal August 25, 1987 Some local marijuana growers are out approximately 135,000 following a harvest conducted near Durham by local authorities. Law officials harvested 44 plants from brushy areas on 300 acres of farmland.

Mrs. Helen Wolfmeyer died Aug 16. Helen and Don Wolfmeyer operated a grocery store in LaGrange for 38 years, retiring in 1977.

The Williamstown Class of 1930 held their annual reunion on Aug. 16.

Attending were Glenn Walker, Carmaleta Wilson Nichols, Carroll Felker, Lester McFarland and John Bevans.

Greg Logsdon was one of five 2A players from the State of Missouri chosen to play in the Missouri Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame Game held at the Hearnes Center in Columbia.

Logsdon graduated from Highland in May of 1987. He holds the career scoring record, most points in a season and career rebound record at Highland. He is the son of Diann Logsdon and the late Richard Logsdon.

50 Years Ago The Press-News Journal August 25, 1962 Mr. and Mrs. J.D. McCutchan were chosen to represent Lewis County by local University of Extension council at the Missouri State Fair. They

75 Years Ago The Press-News Journal August 27, 1937 The Lewis County Fair will be held Sept. 8-11.

Four big days and nights of attractions, displays, agricultural an domestic exhibits. A parade will be held Friday. The fair will be held on the beautiful grounds adjacent to the Canton Swimming beach.

The admission charge is 25 cents and 10 cents for children.

Troop No. 1 of the Boy Scouts had their second camp of the summer when

they spent four days on the John Shanks farm.

Calvin Shanks assistant Scoutmaster, and Ted Shanks and Donald Roberts, junior assistant Scoutmasters were in charge and the following boys were in camp: Dick Spratt, Hagood Davis, Junior Wagener, Wayne Owsley, Jack and Bill Stork, Glennon Glisan and Charles Wiseman.

The Hon. James T. Lloyd, congressman for 20 years from this district, celebrated his 80th birthday by making the principal address at the Old Settlers reunion in Shelbyville. Mr. Lloyd’s home address has been for 40 years in Lewis County and for years it had been Shelby County.

He celebrated work on the history of Lewis County, a complete and monumental work now on the press.

Two sets of twins from Northeast Missouri, Rita and Anita Lindsay from Knox County, and Patty Gross McCracken and Betty Gross Knoche from Lewis County attended the 37th Annual Twins Days Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio, which is held each year on the first full weekend in August. They mingled with some of the other 2,090 sets of multiples, participated in the Twins Days parade, and entered the twin contests for which Patty and Betty brought home the gold medal for their age group. The festival was founded in 1976 and is said to be the largest annual gathering of twins in the world.

New C-SC Ensemble, Camerata, to Debut its Modern Sound

Culver-Stockton’s newest music ensemble, Camerata, introduces a modern sound to the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center with its debut concert, Saturday, Sept. 1 at 8:08 p.m.

The Camerata is a new ensemble at C-SC that will feature music of the 20th and 21st centuries. The primary focus will be on experimental and avant-garde music of the past hundred years.

Culver-Stockton is excited about the addition of another ensemble to its already thriving fine arts department. Camerata is different from other ensembles featured on campus. “This is a project that we are very excited about, as it will allow

Troop B Officers To Participate In Child Passenger Safety Enforcement Program Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces Troop B officers will be conducting a child passenger safety enforcement operation from September 16, 2012 through September 22, 2012, which coincides with the national Child Passenger Safety Week. During the enforcement effort, troopers will place special emphasis on taking enforcement action if drivers (and their passengers) who are stopped for traffic violations are not properly restrained. Officers will adhere to a zero tolerance policy regarding seat belt use-meaning that when officers encounter seat belt or child restraint violations, citations will be issued.

Motorists are reminded that every driver and front seat occupant of a passenger vehicle and all occupants less

than 16 years of age are required to be secured in a properly fastened and adjusted safety belt or child restraint seat. Children less than four years old are required to be in an approved child restraint seat.

Children ages four to seven years old, and who weigh at least 40 pounds, but less than 80 pounds, and are less than 4’9” tall, must be secured in a child passenger restraint system or booster seat appropriate for that child. Persons under 18 years of age operating or riding in a truck must wear a safety belt, regardless of the truck’s licensed gross weight. Any driver who falls under the guidelines of a Missouri graduated driver’s license and their passengers are required to wear a safety belt, regardless of age or vehicle type.

Lewis County C-1 Board meeting The Lewis County C-1 Board met Aug. 15. Minutes of the meeting are edited. A full copy can be obtained from the Lewis County C-1 Central office.

The Board approved the resignations of Nan Yargus and Pam Schultz. The Board approved the following employee confirmations : Melissa Austin, Janice Jennings, Candy Bruhl, Monica Fleer, Anna Mosley, Nathan Sparks, Jennifer Parrish, Donna Dilligard, Roberta Ostermueller, Geri Hagood, Jim Ellison, Linda Whitaker, Kathy Wiskirchen, Katie Aycock and Mary Smith.

A tax rate hearing was held. There were no questions from the public at this time. The Board approved the $3.4605 tax levy.

The athletic eligibility handbook was approved with one new addition concern-

ing concussions. Three students gave a report on the FBLA National Leadership Conference they had attended in June.

Two students gave a presentation on the FCCLA Conference they attended in Orlando. The Board approved the reimplementation of Show Choir.

Rebids will be taken for lawn care after they are run in the local paper. Johnnie’s Service received the bid for tie mounting and repair and for snow removal for the 2012-13 school year. Administrative reports were given by Sue Ann Gaus, Alan Koch, Ben Buenning and Jacqueline Ebeling who reported for Mr. Raleigh.

The next meeting will be held Sept.

12 at 5:30 followed by open session at 6 p.m. in the Highland High School Media Center.

Dr. C. Thomas (Tom) and Cynthia (Cindy) Wilcox Wiltshire of 23 Port Bagnell Rd. West, Eldon, Mo., 65026, recently celebrated 50 years of marriage with a family trip.

The couple was married Sept. 1, 1962, at the First Christian Church (DOC) in Quincy, Ill. Officiating was Rev. Bert Sutton and William Austin. Maid of honor was Jo Ruth Hayward Helsabeck and bridesmaids were Janet Wilcox Hoffman, Carolyn Wiltshire Timmerman.

Flower girl was Jill Rouse, ring bearer was Marc C. Riutzel. Best man was Williams Phillips, groomsmen were James C. Wiltshire and Lee Woods. Ushers were Roger DeLacey and Steven Kuntz. Many in the wedding were Culver-Stockton students.

Mrs. Wilshire is the daughter of the late Roy D. and Dorothy Ruitzel Wilcox, Quincy and Mr. Wiltshire is the son of the late Robert T. and Lois McComas Wiltshire, Liberty, Mo. They have four children, Robert D. (Linda Divine) Wiltshire, Leawood, Kan.; Michele (Fred) Bouchard, Kansas City, Mo.; R. Daniel (Jayne Bates) Wiltshire, Lee’s Summit, Mo,; Bethany Wiltshire (Dave Breen), Oregon, Ill. All four of their children are graduates of Canton High School and two children and one spouse

are C-SC graduates.

They have six grandchildren, Kyle, Trevor, Brandi, Kahluna, Faizol Bouchard and Laura J. Wiltshire.

In July, the entire family of children and grandchildren spent two weeks in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

Tom and Cindy continued on to Peru and then to Brazil where they visited two former exchange students, Alberto Frota, who attended Canton High School 40 years ago and his son, Leo Frota, who graduated from Canton High School ten years ago.

Tom retired from Culver-Stockton College in 2005.

He served the college as Prof. Of Biology, V. P. of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College for a total of 39 years. Cindy retired from Blessing Hospital Laboratory, Quincy, Ill., in 2001 after 29 years.

They are members of Lake Ozark Christian Church (DOC), Lake Ozark, Mo., They are formerly members of Canton Christian Church (DOC) for 40 years.

Tom is involved in Kiwanis, Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance (LOWA); Stream Team, Lakes of Missouri Volunteer Program; MO Master Naturalist; church choir. Cindy is involved in PEO, CWF, Miller County Cares (Teen Pregnancy) and church choir.

Wisehart Earns Masters from Missouri Baptist University Kathy Wisehart recently graduated from Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, where she received a Masters of Art in Counseling and had a 4.0 GPA. Mrs. Wisehart has also been certified as a school counselor and is in the process of receiving her license as a Professional Counselor. Mrs. Wisehart and her husband Scott reside in rural Ewing. They have two children, Nicholas and Andrew.

Since its inception in 2004, the Lewis County Drug Court program has offered an alternative to incarceration and freedom from continued drug use for participants from Lewis County.

Drug court handles special cases involving drug-using offenders through interactive supervision, drug testing, and treatment meant to rehabilitate addicted men and women instead of incarceration. These men and women are reclaiming their lives from addiction. Instead of being reintegrated, the drug court teaches them how to live drug-free, get jobs and get their families back together.

COMMUNITY Fleer Feeds and Hasner nominated for 2012 4-H Hall of Fame

FLEER FEEDS Making the best better for generations of Missouri 4-H’ers, 53 4-H luminaries joined the Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame, Aug. 18 at the State Fair Community College campus in Sedalia. Inductees from 43 counties established a legacy totaling 1,625 years of service to 4-H. The Missouri 4-H Foundation recognizes individuals who have created a legacy of service to 4-H by honoring them with membership in the Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame.

The 2012 4-H Hall of Fame Nominee for Lewis County is Fleer Feeds. Fleer Feeds has been a strong support of the 4-H program in Lewis County for over 25 years. Annually they support the youth of our county through donations and direct member support for their feed needs that often goes beyond their normal commercial operation. Donations they have made have supported individual clubs and class sponsorships. They have also donated to the fund to allow the Lewis County Junior Fair to purchase a digital scale and portable chute, in the last few years. Fleer Feeds sponsors a feed reimbursement program for 4-H members with livestock And they have also put on a Show-Me Showmanship Camp for our youth exhibitors for several years. Annually they support the

youth of our county through donations and in service for their feed needs that often goes beyond their standard service.

The 2012 4-H Hall of Fame Nominee for Clark County is Beverly (Waples) Hasner. Beverly (Waples) Hasner has been involved in 4-H throughout her life as an active 4-Her and then as a dedicated volunteer. She has remained dedicated to teaching and leading 4-Hers for many years after her family was no longer in 4-H. MARGARET MARIE MOORE AHRENHOLTZ RICHARDS Margaret Marie Moore Ahrenholtz Richards of Canton, Missouri, died August 6, 2012, at the Mather in Evanston, Illinois.

Mrs. Richards was born in LaBelle, Missouri, June 4, 1914. She attended LaBelle Elementary School (grades 1 through 6), Longfellow Junior High School in Fresno, California (grade 7), and Canton Public School (grades 8 through 12). She received a B.A. degree from Culver Stockton College in Canton, Mo., and did graduate work at Missouri University, Kirksville, Mo., Montana State College, Bozeman, Montana, the University of Missouri, Rolla, Mo.,, and Oklahoma State University in Norman, Okla.

Margaret’s teaching career spanned 33 years. She taught math, English, and biology at Fremont High School in Fremont, Mo., Rockport High School in Rockport, Ill., Elkhart High School in Elkhart Iowa, and Ollie High School in Ollie, Iowa. She taught math and English as well as directing plays at Canton High School in Canton, Mo.; and taught math and English in Quincy, Ill., at both the junior and senior high schools.

She was Chairman of the Math Department at Quincy Senior High II until her retirement. While teaching math at Quincy Junior High she wrote a text book titled “Calculator Mathematics for Junior High School”. The text book was published by Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois, in 1968.

Throughout her life Margaret was active in academic, social, and professional organizations. During grade school and high school she was a Camp Fire Girl, a Girl Scout, a member of the Canton High School Pep Squad, and played on the Canton High School women’s basketball team. While attending Culver Stockton College Margaret was a member of Phi Kappa Chi (which in 1943 became the Beta Nu Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta) and the PanHellenic Council. She served as secretary/ treasurer of the PanHellenic Council and was president of Phi Kappa Chi for 3 semesters.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Missouri Council of Teachers of Math, N.E. Missouri Council of Teachers of Math, Woman’s Club, American Legion Auxiliary, AAUW, Book Club, B & PW, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, CWF, IEA, NEA, and the River Valley Country Club. She was a member of the Canton Christian Church, and served on the board of the Canton Public Library as well as the Culver-Stockton Alumni Association. Margaret served as secretary/treasurer of the Missouri Council of Teachers of Math and also as president of N.E. Missouri Council of Teachers of Math.

Margaret’s proudest accomplishment, which she mentioned often, was teaching her math students how to manage their own checkbooks. When you completed one of Mrs. Richards’ math classes you could compute your own bank balance – no overdrawn accounts or bad checks. She was a strong independent woman. She loved to travel and to read, but most of all she loved being with people. Everyone who knew her has a “Margaret story”.

She will be long remembered and missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by two daughters (Ann Ahrenholtz Miller and Aletha May Ahrenholtz Bodine Melchior), three grandchildren (Christopher Ashley Miller, Heather Lyn Miller Takacs, and Hans Nicholas Bodine), and eight great-grandchildren (Dylan Ashley Miller, Morgan Evan Miller, Paige Keeley Miller, Max Glenn Takacs, Adah Reese Bodine, Kallan Rebecca Bodine, Hallie May Bodine, and Elin Elizabeth Bodine).

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Orville Milo Moore and Ada May Haydon Moore, her first husband, Chester Bernard Ahrenholtz, and her second husband, Clyde Addison Richards.

Margaret was cremated August 8, 2012. There will be graveside remembrance services in Canton and LaBelle at a date to be announced.

Obituary BETTY LOUISE HENDRICKSON Betty Louise (Yuchs) Hendrickson, 80, a longtime resident of Canton, Mo., died Aug. 25 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Ill. She was born Nov. 23, 1931 in Quincy, Ill., a daughter of Albert and Frances Leffler Yuchs, one of six children. On August 5, 1950, she married Raymond Jesse Hendrickson and moved to Canton, Mo., where she enjoyed life on the farm and raised five children. He died on Jan. 15, 2004. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma. Her greatest joy was her family.

Betty was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Quincy, Ill., where she was President of the Women’s Ministries. She was also active as Vice President of the Lewis County Nursing Home Auxiliary, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee for the Canton Civic Club, President of the Progressive Neighbors and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She also taught Sunday School at Bethel Church and worked at Capps Variety Store in Canton for many years.

She is survived by her daughter Susan and husband Roger Boyd of Hermitage, Mo.; her son Bill and Vicki Hendrickson of Canton, Mo.; her son Tom Hendrickson and wife Cynthia of Benton, Arkansas and her daughter Julie and husband Gary Budine of Quincy, Ill. One brother, David Yuchs and sister, Barbara Yuchs of Quincy. She is also survived by her grandchildren Travis, Tracy, Mindy, Molly, Sheri, Amanda, Wade, Lee, Tera, Amber and Kaleb along with great-grandchildren Ethan, Ellie, Calem, Canyon, Christian, Maylee, Jesse, Alaina, Kinley, Jonathon, Cameron, Olivia, Porter, Isaac and Colin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her son John Hendrickson, her granddaughter Kristin Hendrickson, her parents, one brother, Albert Yuchs and two sisters, Virginia Chinn and Mary Wortman.

Visitation was Monday, August 27 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and the funeral service was Aug. 28 at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton, Missouri with Reverend Keith Garner and Reverend Neil Moore officiating. Burial was at Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Lewis County Nursing Home Auxiliary, Whispering Memories Garden.

Pallbearers: Travis Richardson, Lee Hendrickson, Wade Hendrickson, Matt Kearns, Matt Ward and Evan Lampe.

Obituary ROLLA GARKIE Mr. Rolla A. Garkie, age 75, of Quincy, Ill., died Aug. 21, 2012 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill. He was born Sept. 15, 1936 in Emerson, Mo., a son of Russell M. and Artie M. Richmond Garkie. He married Doris Jean Chipman on June 1, 1962 in Durham, Mo. She survives.

Rolla attended school in La Grange, Mo., and served in the U.S. Navy for four years, one year aboard the USS Lexington. He was employed with Refreshment Services Pepsi for 35 years and later worked at the YMCA for approximately five years. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church of Quincy.

Survivors include three sons, Douglas Garkie of Maywood, Mo., Randall Garkie of Sedalia, Mo., and David Garkie of Quincy, Ill.; three grandchildren, Erica (Ronnie) Crawford, Megan Garkie and Kyler Garkie all of La Grange, Mo., great-grandson, Aiden Crawford of La Grange; two sisters Meda Faye Wear of Quincy and Vivian (Wayne) Jackson of Kansas City, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Maxine Wessell and Louise Deverger and two brothers Paul Garkie and Raymond Garkie.

Visitation was held Aug. 23, at the Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing, Mo. Funeral services were held Aug. 24, 2012 at the Durham United Methodist Church in Durham with Rev. Robert Morwell and Rev. Steve Martin officiating. Burial with military honors was in Durham Cemetery, Durham, Mo. Music provided by Chris Cunningham, organist; Shirley Carter and Sharon Fox, vocalist’s.

Pallbearers were Wayne Griep, Glenn Chipman, Bob Garkie, Rob Garkie, Charles Deverger and Tony Deverger.

The family suggests memorials be made to Union United Methodist Church.

By late September, MoDOT will do work to enhance the surface on the entrance and exit ramps at the US 24 and 61 interchange near Taylor in Marion County. The project was recently awarded to Chester Bross Construction Co. of Hannibal, Mo., for a bid of $219,533.56 at the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission meeting in Hannibal on August 8th.

In addition striping and signing changes will be made to give drivers guidance and advance notice of designated lanes to use for their destinations.

The contractor is expected to keep one lane open for traffic throughout the project.

However, due to the tight confines of the interchange ramp pavements and to ensure the safety of work crews, brief closures of the entrance and exit ramps may be scheduled during non-peak traffic hours.

Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 28, Missourians will notice new signs reminding motorists to slow down or change lanes when approaching emergency or maintenance vehicles parked on the shoulder.

The top of the sign will feature black letters on a yellow background, drawing attention to the message and aligning Missouri’s sign design with those of other states.

Governor Jay Nixon signed legislation to expand the 2002 “Slow Down and Move Over” law- which protects law enforcement and now includes MoDOT vehicles parked with amber and white lights flashing.

The new law also includes certain MoDOT vehicles in the legal definition of emergency vehicles. Now, when responding to an emergency, MoDOT Motorist Assist or Emergency Response vehicle operators can display red lights and use a siren. They will do so only to alert motorists stopped in an emergency traffic queue to yield the right-of-way.

The city has been spraying for mosquitoes several times during the week and when standing water is found they drop pellets to kill the larva. With the West Nile Virus at its highest, residents should dispose of any standing water on their property.

Joanie and Mike and Phyllis and Russell Heindselman enjoyed supper together in Quincy.

Viola Tracy and her daughters, Susan Novinger, Connie Frieden and Donna Stice enjoyed lunch Saturday and sharing their lives.

Alvin and Mary Vaughn attended visitation and funeral of his cousin, Rolla Garkie, this week.

The beginning of school ended a week of visiting for Sheridan and Emma Heindselman with grandma Phyllis and grandpa Russell. While here they enjoyed visiting with neighborhood children, lunching out and their Uncle Gregg Heindselman’s farm machinery. They were glad to see their Mom and Dad and especially Tilly, their dog.

Greg and Melinda Heindselman and their sons, Mike and Zack welcomed Phyllis Heindselman to their home for a catch up visit last week.

Although Jakob Farr did not get off to a healthy start in life he was joined with Bryon Farr, Brad and Andrea Farr, Chuck and Laurie Farr and Lucas and Logan and Grandmother Norma Farr on Sunday where all celebrated his 13th birthday.

tended the Associational Meeting two evenings in Hurdland, MO along with others from the 20 churches involved.

Pam Shubert took her parents Pat and Richard Cottrell for a three day visit in her home at the Lake of the Ozarks. Besides enjoying the time with one another they did some shopping, eating out and boat riding on the lake. A nearby river was very low so the bottom was visible. After returning home they enjoyed supper in the home of their son, Kevin and LaVon Bennett and great grandson Chase.

Also present were Tammy, Brad, Teddie, Brady, Braxton and Brandon Neil. The boys enjoyed riding the 4-wheeler. On Friday night, Pat enjoyed the Palmyra football game and seeing Brady with the school band and Teddie cheerleading.

Robert Farr enjoyed dinner and visiting at the home of his sister, Barbara Jean Steinkamp, at her farmhouse near Camp Point, Ill. She prepared a wonderful dinner in honor of his 85th birthday. Also attending were Curtis Farr, Alva Farr, Rita, Robert, Kaylynn and Karyann Cox, Jim, Lucy and Dustin Steinkamp. They also enjoyed the two inch rain during dinner and the knowledge that it was also raining in Lewis County.

Stan and Charlotte Miner went to West Burlington, Iowa, Saturday where they joined Brad, Debby and Caleb McDowell for supper at Applebee’s where Jordan is employed.

Vicki and John Stiffey are looking forward to a visit from their daughter, Kristen and family, over the Labor Day weekend.

Maywood News Jack and Pete Fountain helped serve Lewis Co. teachers, faculty, bus drivers, cooks and anyone that works in the Highland School system with a Back to School Breakfast at the Ewing Baptist Church.

Others donating food were Lewistown, LaBelle, and Durham churches.

Jack and Pete helped with the Walk for Life at Moorman Park that is put on by Care net.

Paul and Irene Durst had lunch with their daughter, Susan, on Wednesday at Kelleys in Quincy.

Pete Fountain attended the Girlfriend’s Cafe hosted by Ten Mile Church in their community building.

People attended from a number of the churches in the Association.

Lewis County Auxiliary 578

The Lewis County Memorial Post, Auxiliary and guests met August 13 at the Legion Hall in Lewistown. Following a supper, two Highland High School students, Miranda Williams and Christopher Bogguss, spoke on their experiences at Missouri Girls State and Boys State.

Following this program, the Post and Auxiliary held their respective business meetings. Beverly Kern, President, presided at the Auxiliary meeting.

Goldie Smith and Linda Schmitz reported on the First District Auxiliary meeting held in Hannibal on Aug. 5. Members were reminded to continue logging their community service activities, hours and mileage. They were also encouraged to write their names on the back of each membership application when they recruit a new member. During this meeting, membership award certificates were given to various units, including Unit 578 of Lewistown.

As part of the meeting, a memorial service was

held. Deceased First District Auxiliary members for the past several years were remembered in this special service.

Other business at the meeting in Lewistown included a membership report. The new year began on August 1, so members have begun paying their dues to Linda Schmitz, Secretary-Treasurer.

Gail Dietrich presented an idea for a special project related to active duty servicemen and women.

More information will be available and compiled at the September meeting.

Appreciation was given to all who worked and supported Post 578’s Food Stand at the Lewis County Fair. It was a very successful year.

The next Post and Auxiliary meeting will be Sept. 10, 2012 at the Lewistown Legion Hall, beginning with a 6:30 p.m. carry-in supper.

Additional delegates to Missouri Girls State and Boys State are planning to speak.

Bluff Springs U.M.W. The Bluff Springs United Methodist Women met at the church on July 25 for their annual salad luncheon. The group was welcomed by Dorothy Highbee, President, with a devotion and the blessing before lunch.

Mary Ann Linkeman, hamilton, Ill., showed pictures of the Holy Land which she had taken when she and her husband were

on a tour last fall. The trip was very inspirational, traveling and walking where Jesus walked years ago and how it is today.

Guests included the Mark Twain District UMW President Gloria Siebert from Anabel, Mo. Others present were from Canton, Kahoka, Wayland, Brashear, Hurdland, Mo., Keokuk, Iowa and Hamilton, Ill.

Hawkins on Today Show In Honor Of 75th Anniversary James K. and Eloise Hawkins of Canton were announced on the Today Show on Aug. 24, in honor of their 75 years of marriage. Announcer Willard Scott said their names and their picture was shown for their 75th wedding anniversary which the couple celebrated in June. The Today Show staff informed family members the day before it aired on TV that the couple would be announced. Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins were able to view the program and see their faces on television.

Relay for Life going Enrollment at Six-Year High for strong in Lewis Co. Culver-Stockton Culver-Stockton College is excited to announce that, as the first week of class winds down, total enrollment is up 15.3 percent, with an incoming class of 301 students, the largest class in six years.

The number of transfer students is up 29 percent from last year’s class and the number of freshmen students has climbed 11 percent.

There are several reasons for the spike in enrollment. C-SC’s switch 12-week/3-week semester curriculum is entering its fifth year, with the graduating class of 2012 the first to spend all four years with the 12/3 curriculum.

Culver-Stockton is proud to be one of only two colleges in the county to run on this style of academic calendar. The increased enrollment shows that students are responding to the opportunities the 12/3 semester provides, as well as the experiential learning that it allows. The 12/3 calendar also grants

students the chance to take shorter study abroad course in the three-week term, and more than 80 percent of C-SC graduates have been involved in extended travel.

The dramatic increase in transfer students may also be attributed to the improved relationship with area community colleges. Articulation agreements with local schools ensure a seamless transfer process for students continuing the education they started at a local community college.

Another reason for the increased enrollment is the success of the capital campaign, “A Vision for Our Future.” This is the college’s first capital campaign in 21 years. The campaign went public in May with a goal of $10.4 million. To date, $8.5 million of that goal has been reached.

Highland Football played their first conference game on Friday against Centralia. Highland took the lead in the first quarter, gaining six points, but in the second quarter, Centralia scored 20 points, stealing the lead for the rest of the game. Both teams went without score during the third quarter and Centralia finished by adding another 13 points in the bottom of the second half.

The team had a total of 64 yards rushing, 47 passing, and three turnovers. Chris Sparks had a 34-yard touchdown run with 13 tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery.

Canton Softball Canton R-V Softball team played their first game at home against Schuyler Co. R-1 High School, Thursday, Aug. 23. The team lost 2-0 to Schuyler Co. The Lady Tigers softball team opened up the Monroe City Tournament with a win over North Shelby by a score of 7-5.

In semi-final action the Lady Tigers were defeated

by a score of 5-2 by the Knox County Eagles.

Due to the third place game being cancelled, the regular season winner between Canton and Clark County will receive the third place plaque.

Highland Softball Highland Softball had their first game at Marion County on Aug. 23.

Highland won 26-0. They scored 10 runs in the first, eight runs in the second, and eight runs in the third.

It was stopped after three innings due to the mercy rule. Avery Johnson pitched all three innings, striking out four, walking none, and allowing one hit. She also went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, and home run and five RBI’s.

Casey Hinkle went 4 for 5, scoring four runs and she had four RBI’s. Leia

Baker was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI’s, and Emily Harvey was 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBI’s. Taylor Hamilton added a triple and scored three runs, Karley Smith had a double and had two RBI’s, Dana Flanagan had a two RBI triples as well.
