Jeremy Burch, of CE Contractors, of Ste. Geneveive, uses sledge hammer to pound stake to hold concrete form on the Canton levee walk. It will run between two railroad flood gates atop the Canton flood-protection levee.

A levee walk is under construction in Canton. The levee walk will run about 2,200 feet between the north and south river floodgates. CE Construction of Ste. Genevieve was the successful of eight bidders on the project and got the go-ahead notice June 11. The project will cost $155,067.25, the bulk of that comes from a Missouri Department of Transportation grant, with a match by the Canton Tourism Commission. Joe Clark, Canton, who has worked to get the project to MoDOT said the project might be complete by late August or early

September. People will be able to access the levee walk at the north end by parking in the South Riverfront Park and take yet-to-be-built concrete steps to the four-foot wide walk. At the south railroad gate will be a sloped ramp for wheelchair access. People will be also able to park on a hard-surface lot at Front and Lewis Street, near where a former Union Electric power plant and the former Ice Plant business A concrete pad serving as a scenic overlook will also be near an old water intake near the Lewis Street parking. There will also be some benches and an information sign to alert visitors to what they are seeing.
