ONE HURT IN SUNDAY WRECK NEAR LABELLE The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports Wade J. Lay, 36, of Palmyra was injured in a one-car accident Sunday south of LaBelle.

The Patrol said Lay’s 2000 Oldsmobile Alero ran off the right side of the road, then went off the left side of the road, striking a gate, a fence, and a tree stump, then overturning several times coming to rest on its wheels.

Lay had apparently minor injuries, but was to seek his own treatment.

The accident occurred at 5:30 a.m. June 17 on Route D, three miles south of LaBelle.

Lay was wearing a seat belt.

The car was totaled.

Assisting the Patrol were the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, LaBelle First Responders, and Roberts Garage.

CANTON MAN FACES TWO DRUG CHARGES Canton police arrested a man after a short foot pursuit and charged his with two felony drug counts.

Dermane D. Lloyd, 22, Canton, was arrested Wednesday, June 13 on a Lewis County warrant for two class A felony counts of distributing a controlled substance near schools.

Officers made contact with Lloyd at the Casey’s General Store in Canton, before the foot pursuit began.

Lloyd was transported to Hannibal Regional Hospital for treatment for minor injuries during the foot pursuit. A law enforcement officer also suffered minor injuries and was treated and release on scene.

Lloyd was later taken to the Lewis County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 cash only bond.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol and Lewis County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the arrest.

On Friday, June 15, a charge of resisting/interfering with an arrest for a felony was added. He was arraigned Monday in Lewis County Associate Circuit Court.

Garrett Spurgeon, recently won the National Junior Small-Bore Championship and the National Jr. Air Rifle Championship at the USA Shooting Rifle and Pistol Championships and Olympic Trials held at Fort Benning, Ga., June 1-11.

He had previously secured an alternate spot for the 2012 Men’s Olympic Air Rifle Team. He is the son of Larry and Joann Spurgeon of Canton.

Going into the Junior finals of the 10m Air Rifle event, he trailed by a mar-

gin of four points, but as an experienced competitor, having shot in the final before, he had an advantage over the first place shooter. He shot an amazing 10 shot final of 103.5 points to take the lead and secure the Gold Medal and the National Jr. Air Rifle Championship.

On the 50m small-bore range and after 120 match shots, he was tied for the eight position for the finals. At the end of five shots and out shooting his opponent by 2.4 points. Shooting the final against members of the Army Marksmanship Unit, former Olympians and resident athletes, he was the underdog, but he

shot one of the highest finals of 101.5 points, only equaled by Olympian Jason Parker. Spurgeon finished the three day match in ninth place, missing an alternate spot in small bore on the Olympic team by a slim margin of one point. He did win the National Jr. 3-p Small-bore championship, which comes with an appointment to the National Jr. Small-bore Rifle Team.

Spurgeon will continue his rifle shooting this fall at the University of West Virginia and looks forward to qualifying for the 2016 Olympics.

Slight rainfall totals help but don’t solve crop needs

Weekend gentle rains certainly helped Lewis County, but haven’t totally solved the dry conditions common in the state.

Lock 20 in Canton reported 1.61 inches of precipitation for the rains that feel Friday and Saturday nights. At the Middle Fabius River near Ewing, 1.5 inches was reported, and Farm Service Agency in

Monticello reported .98 of an inch in the same time period.

The National Weather Service has listed some of northeast Missouri, including the Lewis County area, as ranking in the “moderate” category for current drought conditions.

A University of Missouri climatologist said in May, and now June, continued a weather trend that set records and prefaced an emerging drought most of

the state faces.

“Back to back we’ve seen top 10 records for temperature highs and precipitation lows for Missouri, and we’re breaking various temperature records left and right across the state with a string of some very mild months,” said Pat Guinan, MU Extension state climatologist for the Commercial Ag Program.

In May, preliminary data indicated Missouri only av-

eraged 2.30 inches of rain, ranking it as the eighth driest on record since 1895 for what is typically the wettest month of the year.

Temperatures brought no relief either. Running about five degrees above normal, the 70-degree average will likely fall in the top five warmest May periods on record for the state.

The impact is seen in fields.

Extension specialists across Missouri observed

uneven soybean stands and corn fields where leaves roll from lack of moisture and heat, both signs of drought stress. Pastures and lawns have that characteristic “crunch” when walked upon due to the browned, dead or dormant grass needing a drink.

LOCAL NEWS 10th Judicial Circuit Receives Supreme Court Awards On behalf of the 10th Judicial Circuit, Presiding Judge Rachel Bringer accepted the 2011 Daniel O’Toole and Permanency awards, presented by Judge Mary R. Russell of the Missouri Supreme Court. This is the ninth time the 10th Circuit, which includes Marion, Monroe and Ralls counties, has received the O’Toole Award and the third time the 10th Circuit has received the Permanency Award. Also accepting the awards were Marion County Judge John J. Jackson, Monroe County Judge Michael P. Wilson, and Ralls County Judge David C. Mobley.

O’Toole Award The O’Toole Award is given to circuits for efficiently managing and processing cases during fiscal 2011.

Missouri’s case-processing time standards, which became effective in 1997, serve as guidelines

for the time various kinds of cases should take to handle. For example, half of civil cases should be disposed within 12 months, and 90 percent of civil cases should be disposed within 18 months.

The guidelines recognize that some cases are more complex and require more time. They are designed as tools, therefore, to achieve the overall goals of efficiency, productivity and quality of justice rather than as absolute requirements.

Permanency Award The Permanency Award is given to circuits for successfully holding timely hearings during fiscal 2011 in child abuse and neglect cases in which children removed from their homes are to be reunited with their families or are to be placed in another permanent home as soon as possible.

Water rates, building ordinance change are Canton board topics

Canton aldermen passed an ordinance Monday night raising water rates four percent.

Mayor Jarrod Phillips explained this was necessary so the city could meet operation and maintenance costs, as well as debt service commitments needed for the bond to make water system improvements. These help the city meet federal mandated standards.

There is a separate issue where multiple residences have one water meter, and the city will now send all residences a water bill.

The city did agree to draw

up an ordinance exempting businesses where the owner lives on the business premises.

It was recently discovered the meter issue hadn’t been fully enforced by the city since 1973, and there will be some parties, including some at Canton Senior Housing that will get monthly water bills.

For the low-income residents, Phillips said federal agencies help subsidize costs.

Phillips pointed out the water and sewer costs of Canton are comparable with other such cities, according to the Missouri Rural Water Association averages.

However, the longest

discussion Monday night – more than 40 minutes was on a garage under construction on Eighth Street, which owners Brandon Savage and Nicole Taylor have started building.

It is a garage they’ll use to store their possessions.

They sought 12-foot walls and 10-foot doors. The City zoning code, for that type of project allows 10foot walls and eight-foot doors.

The board agreed to have a new ordinance adopted to allow the changes for garages, if other provisions of the zoning code are met.

Yard Signs, Political Signs Become Safety Concern When Placed on State Right of Way As a gentle reminder, the Missouri Department of Transportation is respectfully asking the public for their help in keeping the state-owned right of way clear of objects including political and other yard signs.

The placement of yard signs on right of way can sometimes create a safety concern for motorists by blocking the visibility needed to safely proceed through an area as well as enter or exit driveways

and streets. In other situations, the placement of a sign can become an obstacle for a driver to avoid in the event they must exit the roadway in an emergency. They can also make it difficult to mow or maintain the right of way.

Also, it is dangerous for persons when installing or maintaining these signs to be on highway right of way in close proximity to traffic.

When possible, MoDOT tries to identify

and contact a sign owner before removing a sign.

Once a sign is removed, it is held for 30 days and can be retrieved from the local MoDOT maintenance facility.

The board accepted an apparent low bid of $6,799 for rubber ground cover for new swing sets coming to Central Park.

The board agreed to apply for a grant of more than $12,000 from the Northeast Missouri Solid Waste Management District for playground equipment from recycled products.

The grant includes a city in-kind services match.

The 2012-13 budget was approved, as was a resolution to amend the 2011-12 budget.

Their business card says it all “We sell Guns and Roses”. The Flower Mill & Trading Post at 503 Clark Street in Canton is a unique shop where in one stop a customer can order flowers, buy a gun, an antique, a piece of their childhood and purchase a stage costume worn by Elton John.

Owners Carl and Karen LaSalle, came to Canton twelve years ago, when their son Adam, was working for Betty Stinson, who ran a floral shop. The business was up for sale and Adam encouraged his parents to come and take a look at the business and move to Canton. They were

living in Miami, where they owned a successful antique store. Carl LaSalle is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y. and Karen is from a small town in Oklahoma. He had retired from the military as an air traffic controller.

They had wanted to move to a small town after years of living in a large city and when Adam told them of this opportunity, they felt it would be a good fit. The building has a long history including housing a flower shop, Cook’s Men Store, Thompson Motors and the draft board was located there during WWII. Karen takes care of the floral end of the business, although in a family owned business, they each help with every aspect of the business. Beautiful floral arrangements are available for weddings, funerals, proms, holidays or any special occasion. A variety of floral gifts and accessories are also available.

The other part of the business includes a diverse type of collectibles and new, used and antique guns.

This is a business which features antiques for men, but there are many items for any person, male or female, who is a collector or for someone who

has a love for antiques, nostalgia or needs a special piece for their décor.

An English riding machine, which came from the Queen Mary ship, is prominently displayed. The riding machine simulates riding a horse, and was used for exercise. There is a strong interest in flying machines, which are hung from the ceiling, many military items, including the first aircraft computer, in use before WWII. Howard Hughes used the same model to navigate around the world. Baseball primitives, comic books, hot dog cart, old toys and many other diverse items can be found at The Flower Mill. Carl LaSalle is happy to share with his customers the history of an item, what it was used for and what it is worth. They receive a lot of their inventory through trades and other sources.

Firearms, ammunition and accessories are also a big part of the business. LaSalle said many people buy guns as an investment. The shop was one of the first in the state to offer conceal and carry classes which is still offered on a limited basis. He also has many collectors as customers as well as those who use guns for hunting and

pleasure. All types of guns are offered from primitive black powder firearms to the civilian version of military guns. The owners are happy to assist anyone and are very knowledgeable about the different types of weapons available.

The LaSalle’s have three children and four grandchildren. They are active in the community and like living in a small town. They support many local events, especially where youth are involved. Carl, Karen and Adam LaSalle always encourage their customers to visit the other local shops, restaurants, and other points of interest in the area. They invited everyone to come in and take a look at the interesting inventory they offer. The I.N.I.T.I.A.L.S. on business cards and documents

Many people with advanced degrees are proud of their accomplishments, and well they should be. They spend a lot of money and time to get those extra initials behind their name.

The problem is, except for a half dozen initial sets (MD, DO, QB, ESQ, PHD, and ADD) no one knows for what the initials stand. Some well-schooled people put a whole alphabet soup of letter combinations behind their name and we who are the rest of the world are supposed to be duly impressed. Never mind the fact we don’t know why we should be impressed.

As the healthcare industry has mushroomed, all these people of different specializations (MD, PSIRBTT - Medical Doctor, Podiatrist, Specializing In Right Big Toe treatment), add initials that members of their organization understand (and are impressed together). So it is with suit-wearing people in other industries.

This information is put on business cards, press releases, and other official looking documents. Some even spend extra money to make a design of the interlocking letters.

Now, everyone, and every organization is so much more important that the run-of-the-mill people of old.

Rumor (just concocted) says that one man had so many degrees, there wasn’t room on his

STEINBECK business card to include important data like his name and contact phone number. He had to put in small print this parenthesis message: (Name and further degrees continued on next business card.)

Where does Average Joe/Jane go to learn professional abbreviations? How does Average Joe/Jane know that the identifying letters are really a title and not just text messages, which as those trying to learn this know, includes incomplete word spelling?

But does this initial aficionado Wilbur M. Portant, MJS (Master of Janitorial Services), FWCIFC (Federated World Certified Industrial Floor Cleaner) GGG (Generally Good Guy/ Gal) ever sign their name with the initials? No? Why not, because after all isn’t that title or certification important to them?

But requiring those with the extra letters to include those on signatures should help curb the rush to put them out on other literature. Some people would get writer’s cramps.

SOUTHERN STYLE

A girl and her dad…

There are few things in the world that can truly compare with the relationship a daughter has with her father. I can attest to this in two ways- not only have I enjoyed the relationship with my own father, but now, I am also enjoying the growing relationship between my daughter and my husband. As a mother, I know that there are a multitude of things that I do for my daughter- just as all mothers do for their children- but a father can provide a sense of comfort and security that most mothers don’t have the capability of duplicating.

My favorite moments with my father are his random moments of love.

Of course, he always loves me, but because he’s not an overly emotional type of man, he limits his hugs, etc., to the moments that he personally feels the hug would mean the most.

It’s true- he always seems to know the right time to wrap his arms around me and either console me or make my happiness multiply. I’m incredibly thankful to be able to call him Dad, and also thankful to be able to wish him yet another Happy Father’s Day and Happy Birthday.

As for my husband, my favorite moments are watching him grow into the best father he can be.

Although we were very

BARTLETT excited to be parents, we were both so clueless on how to raise a child. It’s taken some time on both of our parts, but I’m so proud of the father that he has become. Somehow, he’s learned to deal with her little quirks and turn them into incredibly special things between them. In so many ways, he’s a better parent than I am, and nothing warms my heart more than to see them playing and laughing together.

Happy Father’s Day to all wonderful, supportive fathers! Thank you for not wanting us to date until we’re thirty because you don’t want our hearts to be broken. Thank you for telling us not to wear ‘that outfit’. Thank you for the times that you grounded us because it made us respectful. Thank you for loving us enough to be the ‘bad guy’ when we didn’t know what was truly right.

You are all loved dearly.

This photo taken around 1980 shows Wilma Chipman standing in front of her business; Wilma’s Cafe and Laundromat in Ewing. Wilma had purchased the building from Leonard Woodworth in February, 1979 and did extensive remodeling to the entire building, leaving a laundromat on the north half and starting a restaurant on the south half of the building. Wilma’s Cafe became a popular hangout for the locals, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. The front porch of the building was a popular hangout for “loafers” to talk and share stories. Since then the restaurant has had many different operators and the laundromat was eventually taken out to provide extra seating for the restaurant.

BACKWARD GLANCES From the pages of early Lewis County newspapers 25 Years Ago The Press-News Journal June 18, 1987 Controversy over a proposed health clinic remained a major topic in the June 10 meeting of the Lewis County C-1 School Board. Dr. Clark Todd, chairman of the Lewis County Health Department Board of Trustees appeared before

the board to emphasize the clinic’s importance.

While the controversy lies in the area of family planning, Todd stressed the importance of mental health services.

Lewis County, and much of the Midwest, sweltered in unseasonable warm, near-record breaking temperatures this past week, with the thermometer nearing the 100 mark on several

FROM OUR READERS To the Editor, We have a Tourism Commission project underway on the levee.

Concern has been voiced in the community about the sources of public monies used to pay for street projects and for two trail projects currently under construction.

Funding for street projects in Canton and funding for trail projects come from different sources and those sources are protected by legislation passed either by local taxpayer referenda or by state or federal legislation. Re-directing monies generated for specific purposes to another purpose is generally illegal.

Street projects for Canton are funded from the following sources with their estimated revenues for 2012-13 - state gas tax ($72,000), motor vehicle tax ($26,500), 1/4 cent local sales tax ($52,700), and general fund sales tax transfer ($80,000). The total estimated revenues for the street fund for 2012-13, including some interest income is $232,200.

The trail projects are funded by the Canton Tourism Commission and grants from the Missouri Dept. of Transportation, who manages air, water, rail and pedestrian transportation as well as highways and roads. The Tourism Commission does not use any local taxpayer’s money. The only source of revenue for the Tourism Commission is a hotel/motel tax, sometimes called a “bed tax”, and paid by

travelers staying at local motels. The estimated revenue for 2012-13 is $40,000. The Tourism Commission also has a fund balance from previous years of about $121,000 with plans for its use. The Tourism Commission budget for 2012-13 is $63,000. That includes expenditures for tourism signage, advertising, special events and completing the trail projects. The bulk of the funding for the “River Walk” comes from the MoDOT grant with additional support from the Tourism Commission’s money. The “River Walk” was approved by the USACE (United States Army Corps of Engineers), engineered

by PSAB engineering in Quincy and the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The trails projects are part of a long- range plan the Tourism Commission prepared July of 2011. The plan was presented to the public at several meetings with civic groups and the City Council.

75 Years Ago The Press-News Journal June 24, 1937 CCC to observe anniversary Friday, June 25, will make the second year that this company has been located at Canton, and for that reason a big celebration is planned for that day.

Another historic landmark in Canton will be razed sometime in the near future. The present Canton House, for years known as the Jefferson Hotel, was, in 1887, the most poplar small town hotel in northeast Missouri. Now the old hotel has been purchased by the Town of Canton and will be razed, the location being put to good use, but many happy memories will linger after the structure is demolished.

John Bursewicz of Jamestown, N.Y., will be replacing Dr. Gaspar Loughridge, who has retired as assistant professor of biology.

George R. Lee of Lamar, Colo., has been named professor of history and political science, a position held many years by the late Dr. Ford T. Messamore. Richard R. Holmes of Peru, Nebr., has been appointed assistant professor of English, replacing Richard Lane. Duane Dagley will replace Edward Cohn as admissions counselor.

Jack Hartmann, chairman of the zoning and planning committee of the town, and J. Patrick Wheeler, a member of the committee, presented the town planning recommendations of General Planning and Research Consultants of St. Louis to the Town Board at its regular meeting Monday night. This is the plan which is so vital to the town if it is to progress.

It covers base maps of the town and surrounding areas, population and economic surveys and analysis, vehicle and pedestrian count and traffic, and surveys of the central business district, public utilities, public buildings and zoning as well as many additional needed materials about the possible growth areas of the future.

105 Years Ago The Lewis County Journal June 29, 1907 George Vonder Haar, the brick contractor, has been awarded the contract for putting up the brickwork at Canton, for the St. Joseph school and hall, which structure will cost $10,000.

It is possible that there are many in the county that do not know that there is a firm at Lewistown that manufactures cement building blocks, fence posts, flues, door and window sill. With the increased scarcity and great advance in building lumber, many think that cement blocks will, in a few years, take the place of lumber and that most of the homes of the future will be build of cement blocks. H.H. and E. S. Binger have put up a large business house built of cement blocks, in Lewistown, and began the manufacture of all kinds of cement building material.

Capps will move their frame shop from their current location in the Capps Variety Store at Fourth and Lewis Streets in Canton to across the street where the Christmas Store is now located. As a result, all of the seasonal merchandise in the Christmas Store is fifty percent off and they will be open late on Fridays and Saturdays to give customers more opportunity to take advantage of the special savings. The store is open until five each weekday and until eight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Along with the vast amount of Christmas merchandise, all other seasonal items are discounted.

This includes Easter, Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day and other holiday items.

Owner Ginny Oliver said the Frame Shop can take advantage of the more spacious location. One of the most popular items at

She described how strange it felt to be working with Christmas items and then walk out into the hot weather. The Christmas Store has been in business for twenty years.

The Frame Shop will move across the street when the inventory from the Christmas Store has been sold. The Frame Shop will offer custom framing and a variety of other gifts. Capps Variety will continue to operate as it has for generations.

Submitted Photo The Canton Agriculture Education department received a $2000 grant from the Missouri Chapter 1 International Harverster Collectors. The money will be used to rebuild a tractor in the Agriculture Power course.

This will be the second year the chapter has been able to rebuild a tractor. Advisor Lezlie Taylor and Chapter President Jessie Campen attending the summer meeting in Deepwater Missouri of the IHC chapter to collect the check. The money is to be used for the purchase and rebuild of the tractor and at the completion of the project the chapter is to sell or auction off the tractor to help fund a project in future years.

MoDOT Urges Respect for Rail Crossings and Railroad Tracks In light of two recent fatal rail incidents involving Missouri teens, the Missouri Department of Transportation reminds young and old alike that rail crossings and railroad tracks are potentially dangerous areas.

In recent weeks, three teens died in incidents involving trains. A 14-year old boy was struck while walking on the tracks and two teen girls, ages 15 and

17, were killed at a rail crossing while playing a game based on the legend of a fatal train collision.

“These terrible tragedies illustrate the fact that railroad tracks and highway rail crossings deserve extra-special attention from travelers,” said Eric Curtit, MoDOT administrator of railroads.

Railroad tracks are, in fact, private property owned by individual rail

companies. People who walk on or near the tracks, fish from trestles or otherwise occupy railroad property are subject to ticketing or arrest by railroad agents vested with police powers.

Highway Patrol Set To Participate In National Effort To Crackdown On Impaired Boaters Colonel Ronald K. Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the Patrol’s participation in Operation Dry Water.

Operation Dry Water is a national campaign in which marine law enforcement officers from across the country coordinate special patrols during the last weekend in June to achieve a high visibility of boating under the influence enforcement. Troopers will focus their efforts

Missouri boat operators found to have a blood alcohol content of .08% will be arrested for boating while intoxicated. A vessel operator with a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit runs a significantly increased risk of being involved in a boating crash. Last year in Missouri, just over half of the fatal boating crashes

had alcohol as a contributing factor.

Boating in Missouri is a fun and enjoyable experience for the vast majority of the boating public.

Don Brown is the son of the late J.W. and Lida Pearl Marks Brown. Lois Dean is the daughter of the late Lee and Beatrice Hinton Miller. The couple were married on July 7, 1952 in the home of Rev. Luther Lewis in LaGrange, Mo. They are the are the parents of Deb Danforth of Columbia, Mo., Diane (Harry) Wilson of Williamstown and Dale (Lini) Brown of Monticello. They have four grandchildren, Darcy (Craig Buckwalter) and Derek

Danforth and Joshua and Toby Wilson; two stepgrandchildren, Zach Cottrell and Kayla (Jacob) Scott; two great-grandchildren Lexi Danforth and Kaylin Buckwalter; and one step-grandchild, Haylie Griffin.

Granddaughter Amanda Brown, great-granddaughter McKenzie Alamanza and step-grandson Matthew Wilson are deceased.

Mr. Brown is a retired grain farmer and Mrs. Brown is a retired Monticello Postmaster. They were members of the former Williamstown Christian Church and are currently attending Canton Christian Church. They are also members of the NOMO Good Sam RV Club. Both are board members of the Zion Hill Cemetery and Mr. Brown served on the Williamstown Fire Dept. board.

In addition to traveling, they enjoy music shows, sporting events, playing cards and visiting with family and friends.

Extended Hours at Mark Twain Lake Visitor Center for Fireworks June 30 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake would like to invite county residents to enjoy a fireworks display while also taking in the one of the best views on the lake. The M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center and surrounding balcony will remain open until 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2012 for the viewing of the fireworks.

Fireworks are scheduled to start around dusk. Parking will be limited so be sure to come early. Charilyn Stalder and LeAnn Waters had a brunch and shower to honor Rachel Bringer and Bobby Shepherd on June 17 after the morning worship service at South Union Baptist Church. The entire congregation was invited and other guests were Ann Brink, Gene Trautvetter, Bruce and Kathy Bringer, and Dalton Shepherd. It was an enjoyable time for everyone with great food and Rachel and Bobby received a number of lovely gifts and some teasing about some of them.

Dale Eisenberg is out of Blessing Hospital and now is in the Lewis County Nursing Home in Canton. Russell Bringer is in the hospital and hopes to go home this week.

Roberta Powell, Mary Triplett’s sister, is in treatment again.

Karon Peter of Casa Grande, Aria., spent last weekend with Erma Jones and they attended church at Maywood. On Friday they were lunch guests of JoAnn Hawkins in Quincy.

Loretta Bringer and Evelyn Brink enjoyed lunch together in Quincy on Tuesday and on Wednesday evening Rachel and Loretta Bringer went on the cruise in Hannibal that is a fundraiser for the Tome and Becky program in Hannibal.

Paul and Irene Durst, Ruth Bowman, Linda Denemark, and Sheila Fischer attended the graduation party for Andrew Marshall at the home of his grandfather, Merle Blentlinger. Other family and friends attended.

Sheila Fischer is visiting her mother, Linda Denemark, and grandparents, Paul and Irene Durst and had supper at John and Susan Knoche’s on Sunday evening for Father’s Day. Sheila is returning home to Nashville on Monday.

Thursday afternoon Jack and Pete Fountain stopped in Palmyra and picked up their granddaughter, Sydney Fountain and continued on to Highland, Illinois to visit their daughter, Katrina and her family, Jeremy and Kaden Hunerkoch.

They visited until Sunday afternoon and celebrated Katrina’s birthday and Father’s Day as they were the same day.

Erma Jones and Judy Davis participated in the American Legion Auxiliary meeting in Lewistown Monday evening. On Thursday evening Erma accompanied a group of Eastern Star ladies to Hannibal for Friendship Night at Lighthouse Chapter 194. Others attending were Brenda Goings, Claire Wehrmann, Teddy Ammons and Neta Phillips.

Paul and Irene Durst had lunch on Tuesday, at Sprouts in Quincy with some of Paul’s High School graduating class.

John Shoemaker’s mother from Darnell, Ark., passed away on Saturday at age 102. John and Alice Shoemaker live in Atlanta, Ga., and she is the former Alice Faye Jones, daughter of the late J.W. and Beulah Jones. Alice and John were in Hawaii on vacation and have returned home for the services.

Don and Betty Barron of Hooperston, Ill., celebrated their 62 wedding anniversary on June 15. Betty is a sister of Erma Jones.

Wayne and Mary Snodgrass, Linda Denemark, Paul and Irene Durst had supper Monday evening at Kelley’s in Quincy.

Mary Triplett from the Quincy Chapter was the chairman of the event and there were people there from Quincy, Palmyra, Hannibal, Bowling Green, Vandalia, Louisiana, and Paris.

There was a good attendance for the Claire McCaskill fundraiser in Hannibal Saturday evening. Marvin and Loretta Bringer and a number of others from this area were in attendance.

Terry Smith has retired from the Gardner Denver Plant in Quincy and he and Maria are enjoying their time together.

I rarely mention the weather in the news, however, rain this week was such a blessing to everyone in the area. The crops are important, however, so many other areas of our lives are affected by dry times.

Curtis Farr enjoyed visiting with Bob and Betty Colgrove, Mrs. Ruby and Denita Meyers, John Dunker and Mrs. Kathy Dunker Grey of rural Hull.

He also called on Mary Ann Sullivan who is recovering from hip surgery.

Bob and Connie Blessing attended the Blessing reunion in Ankeny, Iowa.A bout 50 people enjoyed visiting with each other.

Connie Vaughn and her mother, Edna Rhodes of Palmyra spent Friday afternoon visiting with Alvin and Mary Vaughn.

Georgia Richter brought Myrna Hoteling some Hilltop Club books and pictures from the late Vivian Beilstein. Lovely memories of a lovely lady were shared.

A bar-b-que dinner was held in the home of Raymond and Bessie Stanbaugh on Fathers Day. Present were Virginia and Mike Carpenter, Deana and David Stanbaugh, Ed and Pat Stanbaugh, Brook and Drew Mallett, Kimberly Schneider and Brock and Edith Schmuck.

Pam and Randy Shurbert took her parents, Richard and Pat Cottrell, to lunch for an early Fathers Day celebration.

The Shurberts have sold their Maywood home and now reside in the Lake of the Ozarks.

St. Peters Lutheran Church will have a patriot worship service at 9 a.m. on July 1, 2012. We invite the community to join us on this day of celebration

for our nation. Light refreshments will be served at the Parish Hall following the service.

Fathers Day was enjoyed by Richard and Pat Cottrell, Don and Lou Neil, Jeff and Dawn Neil, Ron and Cathy Heller at the river camp of Brad and Tammy Neil,Teddie, Braxton, Brandon and Brady Neil and Kevin Cottrell.

Alvin and Mary Vaughn had all five of their sons home for Fathers Day. They were Jim, Greg, Jason, Mike and David and their families. Jason and children had visited four days before returning to their home in California, Mo. Jim Shutwell enjoyed a picnic lunch at the Wyaconda State Park on Fathers Day given by his wife Ruth and daughters, Melissa and Angela.

Weather was ideal for this.

Stan and Charlotte Miner drove to Wethersfield, CT to attend the Highcrest 6th grade graduation ceremony June 15 of their granddaughter, Cassandra Scalora. Cassandra received the President Award for Educational Excellence in recognition of outstanding academic excellence. You have to maintain a 3.5 grade point average for two years. She also received a letter of congratulation from President Obama on receiving the President Education Award. She is the daughter of Sebastin and Dr. Laura Scalora.

Progressive Neighbors On Tuesday, June 12, the Progressive Neighbors Club met at the Los Nopales Restaurant for lunch. There were seven members and two guest, Betty Hudnut and Kerry Williams present.

After lunch, the group went to the Lewis County Historical Society were they had their business meeting. President Kay Dodd opened the meeting leading the Pledge to the American Flag. She also read the devotional, “The Class Reunion.” Roll call was answered with memories of members’ fathers.

Cindy Barker gave the program telling about the Lewis County Historical Society. Wilma Hendle was hostess for the day and served refreshments after the program.

The next meeting will be Monday, July 16 at 12:00 p.m. which will be a picnic at Matron Park with Betty Hendrickson as hostess.

BO P.E.O. Chapter BO P.E.O. held their regular meeting May

2 in the LaGrange Community meeting room with Betty Lillard serving as hostess.

President Susan Scholz presided over the business meeting. The chaplain read II Chronicles 7:12-17 in observance of National Day of Prayer.

In keeping with the theme for the year about Missouri, Karma Brinkley presented the program on Missouri Caves.

Missouri is known for being the Cave state. A feature of caves is the constant temperature being around 55 degrees all year. The is only one cave people can drive through, Bridal Cave is famous for couples being married in it. The Mark Twain Cave was made famous by the local author Mark Twain in his books.

Plans were made for a member of the chapter to participate in the Lip Sync show for the LaGrange Appreciation Days. Susan Scholz will be attending the state P.E.O. Convention in Columbia in June.

LaGrange Garden Club The La Grange Garden Club met June 4 at the LaGrange City Council Chambers.There were six guest in attendance including two Girl Scouts.

The program was given

by Joe Coelho, a member of the club and a professor at Quincy University. He spoke on his recent trip to the Galapagos Islands with his class. He shared many pictures of the floral and fauna. The animals have no fear of man and he had many close ups of sea lions, etc.

The City of LaGrange had issued a proclamation regarding National Garden Week which is this week and displays are in Canton and LaGrange. We will be going to the Lay Sculpture Garden next week.

The next meeting will be a program on identifying garden insects by John Pinkowski, Dept. of Conservation, July 2, at Gloria Meyer’s home in La Grange. If any guests wish to attend, call President, Linda Hess or another member.

COMMUNITY NEWS Taylor attends two week Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education course Canton Agriculture Education instructor Lezlie Taylor attended a two week Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) Institute in Columbia, Missouri at the University of Missouri. CASE Institute is a professional development workshop to provide teachers training for the instruction related to a specific CASE course. Once a teacher has successfully completed 80 hours of intense professional development at a CASE Institute, the teacher is certified to teach the specific CASE course.

Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (AFNR) is the first course in the CASE sequence of courses, which introduces students to leadership, science, plants, animals, natural resources, and agricultural mechanics using the hands-on approach of activities, projects, and problems. Students also develop a career portfolio as they investigate their personal interests and careers in agri-science.

CASE is an ambitious project started by the National Council for Agricultural Education in 2007. The project goal is to implement a national curriculum for secondary agricultural education that provides a high level of educational experiences to enhance the rigor and relevance of agriculture, food, and natural resources (AFNR) subject matter. Besides elevating the rigor of AFNR knowledge and skills, CASE provides purposeful enhancement of science, mathematics, and English language understanding.

FBC of Lewistown To Host Southern Gospel Artists In Concert First Baptist Church of Lewistown is excited to announce that it will be host to the national recording artists, Master's Voice on Monday evening, July 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Home base for Master's Voice is Bristow, Oklahoma. Traveling fifty weeks out of the year with approximately 200 dates scheduled, Master's Voice is comprised of four young men committed to their call to go to the world and share the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. The group was formed in their church youth group and grew into a fulltime music ministry.

MV is signed with Mansion Entertainment for a multi-year recording contract. The latest project by Master's Voice, "New Grace" has two singles re-

leased to radio, "This Same Jesus" (on the charts for the last 8 months) and the newest release "Funeral Plans" (2 months and climbing the chart - presently #38 of the top 80 songs). Master's Voice can be heard on local radio station KJIR and SiriusXM/Enlighten.

In July, Master's Voice will host their third Homecoming with friends and Southern Gospel recording artists, Karen Peck & New River, Brian Free & Assurance, and The Isaacs to celebrate seventeen years of ministry at the Freeland Performing Arts Center in Bristow.

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is accepting nominations for individuals, organizations and events to be recognized for their efforts to promote safe driving.

There are four statewide awards and two awards for each of the seven Coalition regions. The statewide awards include: the Lay Down the Law Award recognizing an individual or a group in law enforcement; the Tempe Humphrey Award recognizing an individual or group who have focused efforts on our younger drivers; the Arrive Alive Award recognizing an individual or group for their leadership and dedication to reducing fatalities; and the “Show Me Safety” Award recognizing an individual or group for an event. The regional awards include the Arrive Alive Award and the “Show-Me Safety”Award.

Nominations are due by June 30, 2012, and five individuals with an interest in transportation safety have been selected throughout the Midwest to judge the awards. Obituary KENNETH E. CARVER Kenneth E. Carver, 85, formerly of rural New London, died May 31, 2012 at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra, surrounded by his family.

Born March 1, 1927 in Granite City, Ill., the son of Perry and Estelle Thurman Carver. He attended Granite City Schools. He was a member of the Pontoon Beach Baptist Church, Pontoon Beach, Ill. He owned and operated the Carver Plumbing Service and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 24 years.

He served his country during the Korean Conflict and WWII. He and his family moved from Granite City, Ill., in 1978 to Pinckeyville, Ill., and to rural New London in 1990. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

He never met a stranger and was a lifetime visitor. Mr. Carver was proud to be an American, father, grandpa and was a true Monroe City Panther football fan which he enjoyed watching and cheering on the team especially during the Monroe City and Palmyra rivalry games.

He married Shirley Hubler June 6, 1953 in Edwardsville, Ill. She died Feb. 16, 2009.

Surviving are five daughters, Elaine (Bill) Rucker, Nashville, Ill.; Jeannie (David) Worrell, Palmyra; Rhonda Beck, Monroe City; Janice (Bruce Brill) Schaller, LaGrange; and Amy (Mike) Brennah, Fort Madison.

Also surviving are a sister, Muriel Schreiber, Alton, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, three great great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters, three brothers and son-in-law, Jimmie Beck.

Funeral services were held June 3, 2012 at the Garner Funeral Chapel in Monroe City, Mo., with Rev. Robert Harrison officiating. Burial was in the Center Cemetery. Pallbearers were Darren Rucker, John Worrell, Ted Worrell, Kenny Worrell, Mike Harris, Shaun Harris, Casey Lubkey and Kyle Lubkey.

Obituary JOHN T. HUTTON III John Thomas Hutton III, 73, of Cainsville, Mo., passed away May 31, 2012 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

John was born at home in Braceville Township, Illinois on September 22, 1938, the son of William E. and Martha Schmitt Hutton. The family moved to Lewistown, Missouri in the fall of 1942. John graduated from Lewistown High School in 1957. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation and finished out his military career in the U.S. Army, he served two tours in the Vietnam War. On February 24, 1959 he was united in marriage to Shelby Butler in St. Ana, California. She preceded him

ny. She married Bob Shannon on December 31, 1949 in Shelbina, Mo. He died July 1, 1982.

Betty lived on a farm most of her life and loved it. In the last couple of years, she lived in Canton, but missed the farm. She loved visiting with her family and friends, enjoyed making crafts, cooking, dancing, country music and fishing. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church near Williamstown.

Survivors include her daughter Mrs. Carol (Charlie) Briscoe of Canton, Mo.; son, Tony L. She was the widow of Adolph G. Schuetz. They were married on June 8, 1940 at Fredericktown, Mo. Adolph preceded her in death on July 18, 1997.

She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Hermann, Mo., where she was a member of the Women’s Guild. She worked as a dietician for the Gasconade County R-1 School District.

Frieda is survived by two children, son Kenneth Schuetz and wife Kathleen of Canton, Mo., and a daughter Carolyn Bierwirth and husband Barry of Oakville, Mo., a sister Rose Mary Chandler of Kansas City, Mo., four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers Leroy and Wilbert Kuebler, one grandchild Jeanette Schuetz and a great grandchild Joseph Norbert Newton V. Visitation was held Friday at Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home, Hermann, Mo. Funeral Services was held at Toedtmann & Grosse

John is also survived by grandchildren, Shawn Ploszay, Heidi Jackson, John Thomas Hutton V and wife Samantha Jo, Joshua Cody Hutton, Dominique Hutton, Thomas Austin Hutton, Joshua Ryan Hutton, and numerous nieces nephew and two sisters.

Troop B Officers To Participate In Enforcement Operation, And DWI Saturation Over The 2012 July Fourth Weekend Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces Troop B officers will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. during the 2012 July Fourth holiday weekend. Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) is a national traffic enforcement program aimed at making holiday weekends safer. During this enforcement operation,

all available troopers will be assigned to patrol Missouri highways, not only aggressively enforcing traffic laws, but also to be available in the event motorists experience any type of emergency. In addition to Operation C.A.R.E., Troop B officers will participate in a “20-Mile Trooper” enforcement operation on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, and Sunday, July 8, 2012. During this

added enforcement operation, which will be conducted on U.S. Highways 36, 63, and 61 throughout the Troop B area, troopers will be stationed in 20mile intervals to provide additional manpower during the peak travel days of the holiday period. Also, sometime during the holiday period, a DWI saturation will be held in Monroe and Ralls counties.

“We expect many mo-

torists to be travelling throughout Missouri over this holiday period,” stated Captain Wilt.

“Our goal is very simple; we want everyone to arrive at their destination safely. Please obey all traffic laws, ensure that everyone in your vehicle is properly restrained, and never drink and drive.”

Proposed Crayfish Regulation Would Ban Live Bait Sales Petition Opposing Ban is Being Circulated Missouri Farm Bureau has joined the Missouri Aquaculture Association in opposing a Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) proposal to ban sales of live crayfish used for fish bait. If the new regulation is not stopped, the ban will take effect September 1 this year. Farm Bureau says the proposed ban will not only affect sport fishermen, but fish farmers who raise crayfish for a portion of their income and the bait shops which sell crayfish.

MDC instituted the ban earlier this year on March 1, but quickly suspended it until September. Previous regulations allow bait shops to sell only four crayfish species native to Missouri as live bait. According to the Missouri Aquaculture Association, none of the four are considered invasive. Many stores and the anglers they serve are unaware of the impending ban.

“The regulation banning the sale of crayfish caught all Missouri fish farmers, fishermen and bait shops completely off guard,” said Kevin Flowers, Missouri Aquaculture Association president. “None of the stakeholders knew of this proposed regulation until after the comment period closed.”

Although MDC believes Missouri fishermen are one of the major contributors in spreading invasive species of crayfish by dumping unused crayfish from bait buckets into the water, Farm Bureau believes MDC’s previous regulation allowing the sale of four native crayfish species is adequate if enforced.

“Banning sales of all live crayfish sales for sport fishing is regulation overkill,” says Blake Hurst, Missouri Farm Bureau president. “As an agricultural organization, we support the aquaculture industry and many fish farmers in the state raise crayfish for bait shops. But many of our members are also avid fisherman who enjoy using live crayfish. The Missouri Department of Conservation should use previous regulations instead of an outright ban.”

A petition is now being circulated for citizens who oppose the ban. Those petitions, found at most tackle and bait stores and online at mofb.org, will be collected June 1 and June 28. Culver-Stockton to add men’s volleyball in the future Culver-Stockton College will sponsor varsity men’s volleyball beginning in the 2013-14 academic school year, Wildcat Athletic Director Greg McVey announced on Monday, June 11.

“Men’s volleyball is one of the most exciting sports to watch,” said McVey in announcing the decision to add the sport to the C-SC

sports landscape. “The athleticism of the athletes and the fast pace of play makes it an ideal spectator sport.”

Competition will begin in the winter of 2014, with matches to be played at the 2,000-seat Charles Field House. The Wildcats will compete in the MidAmerica Men’s Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC), which fea-

tures fellow Heart of America Athletic Conference schools Graceland University, and Missouri Valley College, and regional rival Hannibal-LaGrange University.

A national search for a head coach will begin immediately. The newly-hired head coach will have a full year to recruit before starting competition in 2013-14.

Three Canton Tigers make All-State Baseball team Three members of the Canton Tiger Baseball team were named to the 2012 Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Junior Austin Hoewing was a first-team pitcher and sophomore Tyler Niemann was a first team catcher.

Sophomore Brandon Berhorst was named second team outfielder.

Nancy Howe of LaGrange has had an exciting time watching her granddaughters, Cassidy and Shannon Foley, as their teams won three Illinois State Championships. The girls attend Quincy Notre Dame and this past season they were members of the state championship basketball, volleyball and soccer teams. Shannon was a senior at Notre Dame and will be attending Maryville College in the fall and playing soccer. She was a starter on all three 2011-2012 state championship teams. She was also a member of the 2010 state soccer championship team. Cassidy is a sophomore at QND and a starter on the soccer and volleyball team and a member of the varsity basketball team.

Grandmother Nancy Howe says it was a fun time going to all the games and to be there and sharing in the girl’s victories. She said both girls have always been athletic, playing on traveling and community teams.

Their mother, Sheri Winking Foley was on the 1984 state championship basketball team at QND and their dad, Mark, was on the 1981 Quincy High School State Champion basketball team. Mark’s father was a high school coach and played every sport at Kewanee High School, one year lettering in five sports. The girls also have a younger sister and brother who both play several sports.

Howe said the teams had a great following of fans, family, friends and students who attended the games and cheered the teams on to victory. The proud grandmother said it was very special being able to go to the games and share in the girl’s accomplishments.
