SECOND ARSON DEFENDANT PLEADS GUILTY BY DAN STEINBECK Editor dan@lewispnj.com

The second man charged with the burning of the Canton Motel in November 2011 has pleaded guilty to arson in the second degree. Brian Waschenbach, 41, of Kahoka, entered a guilty plea May 10 in Lewis County Circuit Court before Circuit Judge Russell Steele. A pre-sentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing hearing is set for June 7. A co-defendant Abel Rosales, 30, of Canton pled guilty earlier this year and began serving a three-year sentence in Missouri Department of Corrections. A Canton Police report in December 2011 for the arrest of the two claims Washchenbach, the owner of the former Motel offered Rosales payment for setting the fire. Rosales had managed the motel, before it closed several months before the fire. More than 30 firefighters from Canton, LaGrange, Williamstown and Monticello battled the motel blaze for about two hours.

BRIDGE CLOSURE ON MO 16 Weather permitting on Tuesday, June 5, MO 16 will close to replace the Sugar Creek Bridge located east of Monticello. Law enforcement from at least four agencies converged on a Canton home Tuesday morning, May 29. Details were sketchy mid Tuesday morning, but police radio traffic suggested a person was in a house at or near 1207 White Street had a gun and was threatening themself. Traffic on White Street was blocked from 12th to 14th Street from 8:11 to 10:30 a.m. Two women, whose connection to the subject wasn’t clear, were seen talking to law enforcement and then later sitting on a hillside. At one point, a Canton police officer pulled a rifle out of the trunk of a squad car. Canton Police Chief Hayes Shelley said no shots were fired, and that the neighbors to the east were evacuated from their home. Shelley said a weapon was recovered, and said the incident is still under investigation. He declined to say if the weapon had been fired. Canton and LaGrange Police, Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol were on the scene. After 10 a.m. an ambulance and first responders were called to that address, and apparently transported one person to a hospital.
