New Year, New Goals Enrollment up for holidays at fitness center By Dan Steinbeck, Editor

HOLIDAY FIRE CAUSES MINOR DAMAGE A Christmas Day fire caused minor damage to a rural Canton home. Canton, Monticello, and Williamstown Fire Departments were called to the Wanda Pearl residence off Route E, about 6:30 p.m., but most of the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived. Second Assistant Chief Delbert Brumbaugh said there was minor fire damage where the flu pipe entered the roof in a room housing the wood stove, and smoke damage in the house. Brumbaugh said Williamstown and a truck from Station 2 on Route 81 were turned back soon after first firefighters arrvived. Firefighters were on scene about 45 minutes.

MAYWOOD MAN, PHILADELPHIA WOMAN INVOLVED IN MINOR ACCIDENT A Maywood man and a Philadelphia woman were slightly hurt in a December crash. The drivers of two pick-up trucks both refused on scene treatment for apparently minor injuries in Marion County. The drivers were Raymond E. Bemis, 72, Maywood, and Synthia K. Nelson, 48, Philadelphia. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Nelson’s 1997 Chevrolet truck crossed the centerline and sideswiped the 1999 Chevrolet truck driven by Bemis, on Route M, two miles west of Emerson, at 10:50 a.m. Dec. 28, 2011. There was extensive damage to both vehicles, and both vehicles were removed by Parks towing, Palmyra.

There are two main reasons Vic Schroeder has seen an increase over the holidays at Schroeder Fitness Center in Canton. “There are always an influx of college students and locals home over the holidays. There are a lot of people getting ready for the New Year,” Schroeder said. Enrollment in his fitness center is up 20 percent just from holiday participation, in the combination of staying fit when home for the holidays, and people resolving to lose weight in the new year. As an incentive to keep people keeping any fitnessrelated resolution they may have made, a “biggest loser” contest will be started the second week of January. Of the 23 participants last year, most people stayed with the contest. Prizes include 50 percent of the dues to the top three “losers,” and 50 prcent is given to the American Heart Association. “Most people come in and want to talk about their weight. By the time I’ve talked with them, they go out the door talking about losing inches, and how good they want to look. Schroeder knows it’s not all about the weight lifting
