Local teams gearing up for a great season

Lewis County is gearing up for another great season of local basketball.

The Press-News Journal proudly supports these teams and presents the preview of Canton, Highland and Culver-Stockton boys and girls teams,their schedules and outlook for the upcoming season.

A great way to spend an evening is to attend local basketball games. Lewis County has many talented and dedicated players and coaches who work hard and look forward to another season of thrilling action. Cheerleaders practice daily and perform many cheers and stunts during the games that are always fun to watch. Band members provide pep music to motivate the crowd and players. Teachers take turns at the admission tables, handing out pro-

Special nights include Paint the Gym Pink, homecomings, senior night and tournament action. Many teams have halftime entertainment for the fans such as music, shootouts, raffles and other fun activities.

People who attend basketball games get to see exciting sports, visit with friends, make new friends, enjoy great concessions and take pride in their community.

CULVER-STOCKTON COLLEGE WILDCATS

Culver-Stockton College Wildcats

Jack Schrader, formerly of Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., is in his first season as Wildcat mentor after he was named Culver-Stockton College’s 23rd head mens basketball coach on March 4, 2011.

Schrader states that his transition to Culver-Stockton College was very fast.

“It was something that just showed up on the radar screen. I came over, got the interview, got the job, and got started as soon as I could.”

COACH SCHRADER His main goals for the team are to get better every day and get into the postseason. Schrader says, “Everybody wants to play the post-season.”

He sums up the Wildcat game plan in one word, “Execution. This means we want to figure out what we’re doing that is best for the team, offensively and defensively, and try to get everyone to do their job.”

He lists the keys to success as defense, then rebounds,

and then not turning the ball over to the other team. “If you do those things then you have a chance pretty much to get all time wins.“ Considering overall talent, he says, “It all depends on who we play, but I’m satisfied with the way our guys are playing now. Also, we have several players locally and in the surrounding areas that are going to help us this year. “ As a first-year coach in the HAAC, Schrader is still in the learning process. “I know it is a good Conference, I know it will be tough, but I don’t exactly know our competitors yet. My main concern is what they put on the floor, both offensively and defensively.

Schrader’s personal challenge to the team is to do everything they can to help the team get better. “One of those things is to get better themselves. That’s why you play basketball, to do whatever you can to help the team.”

To the fans, Schrader says, “Come to the games and make noise. I hope the fans see when they come to the games that the guys work hard. I hope that is visible to them. I hope they appreciate it.”

In his short span as head coach, Schrader has taken great pride in his new home court. “I like the school and I like the coaches in the athletic department. We have a good staff here; we really enjoy doing what we’re doing. I hope we can build something that the school, the community, and the area can enjoy. That’s the whole idea.”

Culver-Stockton Lady Wildcats

This is Melissa Young’s first year as the coach of Culver-Stockton Women’s Basketball. She says her transition to C-SC has been incredible. “I grew up in a small town, so coming to a school based in a small town feels like going home to me.”

Young’s main goal for the season is to make improvements. She is also striving to build upon the foundation that the previous coaches have created.

She believes that it is alCOACH YOUNG ways a goal to shoot for post-season play and for a conference championship. “If you don’t shoot for the highest, you really don’t have a chance of ever getting there,” she stated.

Young also wants to see her players work well with each other. She currently has six seniors on the team, (four of which are starting players), and also has several new transfers this season. Young states, “If the team works well together, and they all learn to focus on their individual talents, they have a great potential to be a championship team.”

Young’s coaching style focuses around hard work.

The team is currently striving to improve their defense, rebounds, and free-throws. Young tries to give equal importance to every member of the team. “Every single player on the team is important and when the opponents

Young focuses on attempting to work her players harder than opposing coaches are working their teams.

“If the players from Evangel (the school who won the conference championship last season) are up at five in the morning, then I want our team to be up around the same time and running for longer time periods.”

There are two local players on the C-SC team this year, Jessica Logsdon and Emily Lay, who both attended Canton R-V. Melissa says she appreciates having them on the team. “When you get players that have gone to state, they have a winning attitude, and that helps because when they know how to win, that is one less thing you have to teach.”

Young has been greatly enjoying her position at the college and states that everyone has been very helpful and supportive of her team and herself. She hopes the students, faculty and community will continue their support of the team.

Andy Anderson begins his 14th year as head coach of the Canton High School boys basketball team. After 19 total years in coaching, Anderson’s career totals are 284-169.

Last year the Tigers finished their season with a 19-6 record. They made the post-season and won the district title, but fell

short in the sectionals.

Along with assistant coaches Cliff Hark and Doug Wilson, Anderson shares, “We would like to continue on our success from last year and advance farther this season.”

The starters returning this season are Nick Janney and Garrett Serbin.

This is Lindsay Uhlmeyer’s first year as head coach of the Canton girls basketball team, and she is very excited to have the opportunity to work with the girls. She has been an assistant coach at Clark County and Canton in the past.

Lindsay’s goal for the team this year is to become more and more competitive in each game the team plays. “We

play a difficult schedule, but I want to see improvement with each game and begin to surprise people,” Uhlmeyer stated. She believes her team has wonderful potential and thinks the team can be very competitive this year in the district. The most important thing she hopes for is the physical health of her team. “I hope we don’t see the same frequency of injury as we did last season. It is difficult to see players unable to finish the year because of an injury, and it’s also difficult for the team to pick up where that player left off.”

Uhlmeyer’s coaching style is based around hard work and good physical fitness. She wants to work her players in order to build their stamina. There are many players on the team who are smaller in stature than the team’s usual opponents, so Uhlmeyer wants to focus on getting the ball to the basket and making free throws when players have fouls. She is also working hard to minimize turnovers in order to prevent the other team from scoring.

The Lady Tigers are a young team and currently only have one senior and one junior on the team, but the senior, Katie Shuman, provides a lot of spark for the team and excellent leadership despite her small size. Lauren Janney, Jessie Campen, Aubrey Durst, Josie Walsh, and Brittney Berhorst are additional players that Uhlmeyer also believes have incredible personality and talent.

These girls, along with Shuman, play as guards.

Uhlmeyer believes the keys to a successful team is

taking care of the ball and capitalizing on every opportunity that they are given. ”Our team has a lot of potential and I hope they will continue to develop. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from them as well.”

Uhlmeyer is thankful to have the experience of her father, David Gaither, as the team’s assistant coach. Her father has served in various positions as a high school and junior high coach over the years, and many youth teams as well. “He has a lot to offer the girls and I learned a lot from him when he coached me.”

Concerning fan support for the team, Uhlmeyer shares, “We always have great fan support and I am not worried about that.

I know they will rally around our young team to show them their support.

I think our fans give our players more confidence.”

Highland Girls Basketball Coach Brad Dance is in his ninth year of teaching and coaching at Highland High School. This is also his ninth year as head coach. Dance went to Quincy Notre Dame, Quincy University, and Illinois State for his two degrees, one Bachelor’s in Athletic Training, and the other a Master’s in Education. Dance has been COACH DANCE teaching Physical Education for 10 years and has been coaching for 12.

Dance’s main goal this season is for the team to get better, but there are some other goals that are important to him as well. There are several injured players on the basketball team, and Dance would like to see them return to their healthy standing. Also, he urges the team members to improve individually which leads to his main goal of team improvement.

night games are the nights that tournaments and championship games take place. “You know you’re going somewhere when you play a Saturday night game,” Dance remarked.

This year, Dance is focusing on a defense-heavy coaching style. He stated that his team did very well last year with their offense, and therefore, he didn’t want to change something that worked for the team. The team’s priority for defense is to maintain good man-to-man defense, stealing, blocking, etc.

Dance challenges his team to play hard together and to come to practice every day giving the team, the coach, and themselves all they have to offer. He also encourages healthy living and playing. His team has put a great amount of hard work into the first two weeks of practice, and he’d like to see that continue out of his players. “If you work as hard as you can, the wins will just follow.”

On his team, he has many talented players, but three girls in particular come to his mind when discussing talent. Ashton Luttrell, sophomore, and Nicole Kraft, senior, are two very talented guards this year, and Julie Sholtz is also a talented player. Unfortunately, Julie is also one of the injured players and isn’t expected to return to the court until December.

He tells the fans of the basketball games to come out and support the girls and boys basketball teams with as much noise as they can make, and as for those looking to try out for the team, the coach says the kids know what to expect of him. He wants kids who are willing to work hard, and give it all they have.

Mr. Dance is very proud of his girls basketball team and is happy to be a coach and teacher at Highland High School.

The main idea behind this team is to work hard and constantly improve.

Rosencrans doesn’t believe in having a certain type of coaching style.

Where some coaches may focus on one aspect of

basketball or the other, Rosencrans tries to cover all areas. “Being yourself is the best coaching style to have.”

He believes that the keys to having a successful team lies within three main principals. His team is currently working on their defensive skills, their rebounding, and their offence. He also believes that the boys on his team need to also keep their eyes open for any small mistakes made throughout their games so that they can focus on bettering their playing.

While each player has different areas of capability (such as one player being a better guard than at rebounding), he says that he feels all his players

At least seven graduates of Lewis County schools are playing college basketball this year.

Those known to be playing this year include six Canton R-V graduates and one Highland graduate.

Playing for CulverStockton are Canton graduates Drew Ayers, senior; Colt Carper, freshman; Justin Ellison, junior; Emily Lay, senior; and Jessie Logsdon, sophomore.

Kyle Ellison, of Lewistown, and a Highland graduate is also playing at Culver-Stockton.

Tori Niemann, of Canton is a sophomore on the University of Missouri Tigers varsity team.
