FIREMAN FROM LAGRANGE IN ACCIDENT
A LaGrange man, who is a captain with the Hannibal Fire Department, was involved in an accident while apparently on an emergency run Oct. 25. Timothy K. Daugherty, 48 was westbound on Market Street in Hannibal in a 2005 Ford SUV of the Hannibal Fire Department when it collided with a 1997 Nissan driven by Sherisa L. Harris, 36, of Jonesboro, Georgia. Daugherty was not injured, but Harris, and two passengers, also of Georgia had apparently minor injuries and were taken by Marion County Ambulance to Hannibal Regional Hospital. Other media said Daugherty, had emergency lights operating as he went through an intersection. The SUV had extensive damage and the Nissan was totaled. No charges were filed.

Dubious presidential preference primary continues in Missouri (Compiled agencies news) The State of Missouri will again have a presidential preference primary in February 2012. Already there is some question as to what the primary can produce as a viable result. A state senate news release said House B-3 sought to move the election from February to March to accommodate requests of national political parties. A senate substitute to skip the 2012 primary fell on a 16-16 tie Senate vote, leaving Missouri’s primary as Feb. 7, 2012. Missouri Democrats took no action on the primary issue, and Missouri Republicans opted for a caucus system for 2012 presidential candidates. Some lawmakers are saying the presidential primary will cost Missouri $8 million. Some Republican senators said a caucus allows a public to choose candidates without
spending state money on an election. Other people said a primary doesn’t encourage candidates visits and that caucuses alienate voters. With the Republicans having a caucus, the primary vote total is almost meaningless. As of Oct. 25, filing for the presidential primary had opened, and would be open until Nov. 22. All presidential primary candidates must file with the Secretary of State’s office. In Missouri, only candidates from these parties may participate in the primary: Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, or Constitution. There is a $1,000 filing fee with a receipt given to the party. The 2008 presidnetial primary cost $14, 537.19, which the state did re-imburse. In that election, 1.972 people voted, of 6,109 registered voters, meaning a cost of $7.37 per each Lewis County participating voter.

Costumed children and accompanying adults (some who also wore costumes) pass by cars and vans at Canton R-V School Monday night to collect candy, coins, and sandwiches offered at the Kiwanis Trunk or Treat. Trunk or Treat has become a popular event recently as parents are looking for a safer alternative to traditional trick-or-treating.
