MACON COUNTY’S LARGEST EASTER EGG HUNT TO BE HELD APRIL 7 Macon County’s largest Easter egg hunt will be held at Church With Out Walls in Atlanta on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 11 A.M. for an Easter Egg Hunt. Children of all ages are invited to attend including teenagers and adults.

The grand prize for the children’s division will be a bicycle.

This free outreach event will also include a hot dog lunch for the children and families.

There will be a division for teenagers including prizes like iTunes cards. An “adult division” will also take place: Parents and supporters of the younger hunters will be competing for two gas cards prizes.

More than 5,000 eggs and goody bags will be scattered throughout the yard at 619 S. Williamson in Atlanta.

Local teens and adults will assist with the event and pack eggs for the kids.

Saturday morning, March 17, 2012, at the Bucklin Legion Hall, The American Legion Green Hills Post 57, Post 57 Ladies Auxiliary, and Squadron 57 Sons of the American Legion conducted a benefit breakfast for Rick and Sandy Foster, of Lingo Missouri.

Sandy is in a nursing home and Rick is receiving treatment for cancer. Both are members of the Post 57 family. The community response for the benefit was overwhelming, with over 125 people attending. Post Commander Leighton Reid and Auxiliary President Wilma Jobson thanked the community participation and all who donated to the breakfast.

A community bake sale was conducted during the breakfast, with all proceeds going to the Fosters.

JUDGE PHILIP PREWITT DECLARES CANDIDACY FOR CIRCUIT JUDGE Macon County Associate Circuit Judge Philip Prewitt (R) has declared his candidacy for Circuit Judge of the 41st Judicial Circuit. The Circuit is composed of Macon and Shelby counties.

“For the first time in 12 years voters can choose who they want as their Circuit Judge,” said Philip Prewitt. “I am proud to have the opportunity to serve the citizens of Macon and Shelby counties as a fair and impartial judge.”

Born and raised in north Missouri, Philip lives in Macon with his wife, Stephanie, and their two children. Prewitt practiced law as a civilian and military lawyer for over 18 years before

LOCAL NEWS Local Republicans Gather for Annual Lincoln Dinner Banquet Speakers included two members of Congress and Candidates for Governor The local GOP gathered for their annual Lincoln Dinner celebration on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at United Trinity Church in Macon. More than 180 attended the prime rib dinner.

United States Congressman Sam Graves provided the keynote address. Graves is one of only seven farmers serving in the US House of Representatives. Due to redistricting, Graves’ 6th Congressional District will include Macon Co. and all of Northeast Missouri in this year’s election cycle.

Jim Willis, Committee Chair, opened the banquet. Prayer was provided

by Rev. Ken Kantle of Callao Christian Church and the pledge by Sen. Brian Munzlinger. New senate districts will place Macon Co. in Senate District #18, represented by Munzlinger as of January 2013.

a significant increase in the amount raised from the event. An auction, ticket sales, donations and sponsorships provided funds to assist local candidates.

The March 18th meeting of Post 57 Auxiliary was brought to order by President Wilma Jobson.

There were 14 members in attendance plus two guests, Nancy Evans and Betty Mills.

The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble was led by President Jobson.

The opening prayer was led by Laurel Curry.

Secretary’s report was read by Carolyn Payne.

A motion to approve the minutes was made by Doris Kitchen and seconded

by Cherry Miller.

The Treasurer’s report was given by Debbie Reid.

Linda Balfour, Poppy chairperson reported that her granddaughters had sold all the Auxiliary poppies. $65.00 was given to the treasurer to deposit in the Poppy Fund. Linda also stated that the New Cambria School will be participating in the Poppy Poster Contest.

Debbie Reid, membership chairperson informed the members that the Auxiliary membership still stands at 95.95%.

Americanism chair, Carole Kennison stated that the Americanism Essays have been picked up from the school. Cherry Miller will judge the essays.

The Community Chair, Cherry Miller announced that the Bucklin Civic Club is hosting a free meal (Citizens Community Luncheon) on March 22 between the hours of 11:30 to 12:30. The meal is open to everyone.

In the absence of the Girl’s State Chairperson, Lori Hanson, it was announced that only one delegate will be sent to Girl’s State. The attendee is Cindy Hendricks.

Public Relations Chair, Cherry Miller suggested that the Auxiliary do more to participate in serving our veterans. Suggestions such as visiting the Veteran’s Homes and doing lap robes were discussed.

Old Business: We are still collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House.

Membership pins are available at the price of $3.50 each.

The kitchen aprons are again tabled until the next meeting.

Wilma told the members that she had sent cards to Rick and Sandy Foster, Candy Burns, Harriet Meyer and also a birthday card to Rick Foster.

New Business: Carole Kennison made a motion that the Auxiliary establish a scholarship for the Girl’s State representative. The $100.00 scholarship will first be awarded to the prior year’s attendee, Gracyn Hanson. Doris Kitchen seconded the motion.

There will be a Veteran’s

Rally in Jefferson City on March 22nd. All Legion and Auxiliary members are encouraged to attend.

The District meeting will be held on April 14th in Lemons, Mo. Wilma informed the members that she will send a care package to Javan Sturdy. He is presently

serving in Afghanistan.

The next Auxiliary meeting will be held on April 15 with Carole Kennison and Carolyn Payne serving as hostesses.

Reminds Boaters Of The Importance Of Staying Safe

Due to the mild winter that many Missourians have experienced, the boating season is off to an early start.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is calling attention to the importance of safe boating practices and the use of life jackets while on or near the water. On average, 700 people die in the U.S. each year in boating-related accidents. These numbers could be significantly reduced if more people used safe boating practices. Safe boating begins before heading out on the water, and may include some of the following steps: Successful completion of a safety inspection of the vessel, including personal flotation devices, navigation lights, sound-producing devices, fire extinguishers, mufflers, ventilation, and registration.

Ensure the tires and wheel bearings on the boat trailer are functioning properly. Not only can a bad tire or a rusty wheel bearing be dangerous, but it may delay a start to a great vacation.

Check, charge, and test the boat batteries. Most batteries for a boat have a life of about three years. If the batteries have been dead since last fall, there may be chance these batteries cannot be recharged and need to be replaced.

ART STUDENT OF THE WEEK

What A Week!

Beautiful weather all last week and rain this week! You never know, it could still snow before it’s all over! I have to say, we have been enjoying these wonderful days!

I was at Casey’s the other day and 3 kids were buying doughnuts. They didn’t have enough money for 3 so they were trying to figure out how to divide 2 between them. I told them to go ahead and pick out another so they could each have one. You would have thought I gave them a $100 bill!

Sometimes I will pay for the person’s order behind me in a drive thru or if I see someone in uniform eating lunch I will pay for their ticket as I leave. I love doing that when I can! I think the simple things like that just makes a person’s day go better.

It would be great if everyone did one good deed a day. Just imagine how many people that would touch! Even the simplest things like sending someone a card or flowers for no reason, or putting a note in a lunch box wishing someone a great day!

I would always put a note in my husband’s lunch, or when he worked out of town I would stick

LIEBHART them in his jean pockets so he would find them throughout the week. Of course that led to some practical jokes, I love playing on him. He never said much until one day I packed his lunch and decided to take a bite out of the corner of his sandwich before I put it in the bag. I can picture him just shaking his head, but we have to laugh about it.

We are big practical jokers. I have been sprayed from someone putting a rubber band around my sink sprayer several times as well as Kool Aid in the shower head. You never know what could happen and you can never be prepared.

April Fool’s is getting close! Makes me wonder what wonderful things we can come up with this year! Ideas are welcome!

Romans 14: 19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things where with one may edify another (Instruct or improve morally or spiritually.

Webster: Peace is an undisturbed state of mind.

The peacemaker cannot let disturbance alter his mind. He has to know what Jesus would do in the same situation. Please read John 8:1-11, the story of the wisdom of Jesus while in a very serious situation.

Remember when the woman was taken in adultery; Jesus moved very slowly and quietly.

He did not take sides.

Rather he knelt down and thoughtfully took time to understand the situation.

Decisions should never be made while in fear.

Jesus told us to come to him and we could reason [think] together. When Jesus sits on the commit-

tee the situation is never hopeless.

When Jesus quieted the storm he simply spoke to it. He said, “Peace be still”. Jesus walked on top of the storm when going to the disciples. As in the storm, Jesus is always on top of your situation.

Peace follows the storm.

Proverbs 20.3 It is an honor for a man to cease from strife.

Strife is the act of fighting or quarreling. Has it ever accrued to us that we can stop?

What if they gave a war and no one came?

Proverbs 20.3 But every fool will be meddling.

Have we taken the time to ask ourselves, is this any of our business?

The first step to peace is to take the cotton out of our ears and put it in our mouth.

We can’t find peace while defending our rights. Jesus called himself the Prince of Peace.

My prayer is for you to find him now.

Possible Scams in the area The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to inform citizens in Northeast Missouri about possible scams that have occurred in the area.

Recently, the Patrol received information from a citizen who received a telephone call from an individual claiming to be an agent of the “license bureau”. The caller told the citizen they needed to replace the number on their driver’s license. The caller then said in order to do this, they needed to obtain the citizen’s social security number.

It is important to understand this is not proper protocol for the Missouri Department of Revenue, local

license bureau, or any other reputable business. The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind citizens to NEVER provide any personal information, including social security numbers, date of birth, or bank account numbers, to anyone over the telephone or e-mail. It is also a good idea to monitor your bank and credit card accounts for any suspicious activity. Recently, several local individuals have discovered unauthorized transactions on their accounts. If you believe you have become a victim of identity theft, please contact your local law enforcement agency or the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Troop B Results Of “Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over” Enforcement Campaign Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces the results of the “Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign conducted in the Troop B area. The enforcement campaign began at 10 p.m., on March 17, 2012, and concluded at 2 a.m. on March 18, 2012. During this enforcement campaign, troopers patrolled specific areas with a specific goal of detecting impaired drivers and other traffic violations that contribute to traffic crashes. As a result of the operation, officers made 52 arrests and issued 124 warnings. The following is a list of enforcement contacts made during the campaign: 5 -- Arrests for driving while intoxicated 19 -- Summonses issued for speed 11-- Summonses issued for seat belt violations 1 -- Summons issued for a hazardous moving violation

1-- Summons issued for a non-moving violation 1-- Summons issued for a license violation 9 -- Summonses issued for insurance violations 1-- Summons issued for a signal light violation 3 --Arrests for person under 21 years of age possessing intoxicants 1 -- Arrest for a misdemeanor drug violation Law enforcement agencies throughout Missouri participated in this statewide effort to remove drunk drivers from our roadways in an effort to make Missouri roadways safer.

seasoning salt garlic powder black pepper 1 pkg lipton onion soup mix 2 bx 48 oz beef broth 1 roast shoulder 3+ lbs.

16 oz beer of choice good french bread...enough for 6-8 sandwiches EXTRAS 1 md onion 1 sm bell pepper swiss cheese Directions Put roast in crock pot...use a good coat of all the seasonings listed. Add lipton onion soup mix.Add a beer, can use 2 if you like. Add 2 boxes of beef broth roast should be covered completely. Turn crock pot on low/ med and go to work. Cook 4-6 hrs till falling apart.

Could be longer according to how your crock cooks.

Shred with a fork. If you like bread can be toasted... use juice for a dip.

Callao Legion Meets The Argonne Post 360 American Legion and Auxiliary met March 8 with a carry-in supper served at 6:30. Hostesses were Lauretta Yutz, Shirley Kindle, Irene Wyatt and Louise Davis. Tommy Cross gave the blessing before the meal.

Commander, Robert Maddox announced that there was to be a benefit for Rick and Sandra Foster at the Bucklin Lodge on Saturday, March 17.

He also asked the members to donate $10.00 each instead of having the annual Spring Fish Fry. All approved.

The ladies auxiliary went to their separate meeting where President, Linda Maddox, lead the pledge to the American Flag. They then recited the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion. June Standley, secretary, did the roll call, with 14 members present.

The secretary and reports were given and approved.

Linda told of an idea she got at a meeting she recently attended to fold a small flag, 7x12 inches, the same as the large flags are folded, then place them in a small plastic bag along with a poem, and give them to serving veterans to carry in their pocket.

Linda would like to enlarge the ladies group by encouraging spouses of Callao Legion members

to join the Auxiliary to support the Legion with their projects, and also help with the Auxiliary projects. She also wants to encourage support of the Girl’s State fund raising project and the enhancement of Veteran’s programs.

The Post will be hosting the District Meeting on April 1, at the Legion Hall in Callao. There will be special guest speakers, and a meal following Celebrates 2nd Birthday Carson Thrasher celebrated his second birthday March 18 with birthday cake and ice cream at the home of his grandparents, Danny and Lisa Smith, north of Callao.

Carson is the son of Hallie Smith and Nick Thrasher.

Other grandparents present were Leslie and Sharon Thrasher.

Carson had seven great grandparents present for the occasion: Carolyn Magers, Byron Smith, Marguerite and Leon Thrasher, Tillie Christensen, and Connie and Violet Watson.

Callao C-8 School News This Thursday, March 22nd, Callao C-8 will be hosting the Red Cross Blood Drive. The blood drive will be set up in the gymnasium. The operating times will be 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The Callao middle school students will be participating as hosts at the event. Come out and support the local Red Cross Blood Drive and help save a life!

We will have a need for a make-up day! Due to having to close for illness on March 2nd, school will be in session on Tuesday, April 10th. This day was originally schedules as a part of Easter break, but had been designated as a make up day. We will have a full school day on April 10th. The teacher’s in-service will take place on May 21st.

The students in grades K-6 have been invited to attend a Food Power presentation at Atlanta school. The presentation will take place on April 11th. We will attend that presentation in the afternoon. This will be an informative, interactive presentation that is designed to engage students in the learning process. We are looking forward to attending.

Middle school track practice has started. The first meet is quickly approaching. We have eight students participating. We have enough for a boy’s relay team and for field event participation. The students are working hard to prepare and are looking forward to the meets. We wish them luck!

Callao City Hall News Welcome to Spring in Callao! The City of Callao will be having their City wide Garage Sale on Sat., May 5th. The Bulk pickup will be on Wed., May 16, and Appliance pickup will be on Fri., May 20. Let’s all work together to clean up Callao!

The City of Callao is now working on a new Waste Water Project that the Dept of Natural Resources is requiring for us to comply with all the Government Standards.

There will be a Bond Issue on the Aug. Primary Ballot, so please get out and vote!

Bucklin Community Association Meets President Doug Anders called the March 19, meeting of the BCA to order at 7:00 pm with all officers, nine members and one guest present.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read by secretary, Stacey Anders and the treasurer’s report was given by David Jenkins. These reports were approved.

Doug Anders gave a report on progress made in securing carnival for the homecoming. Bob Davis reported on entertainment. All three nights are now covered with Keyota on Thursday night; Iron Horse on Friday night and Riker for Saturday night.

Bob Davis read the recommendation of the nominating committee for a new slate of officers. The nomination was accepted and the following persons will be installed at the April 16, meeting; president, Thelma Jones, vice president, Betty Shoemaker, Secretary, Stacey Anders and treasurer ,David Jenkins, assistant treasurer, Lynn Shipley. Fund raiser chair will remain, Lori Davis with Bob Davis serving as entertainment chairperson.

Lori Davis had a report on the success of the fried chicken dinner in March.

One hundred twenty five dinners were served. It was decided to have a spaghetti dinner on the 22nd of April at the community building in the park. Plans will be finalized for this dinner at the April meeting.

The BCA will sponsor an Easter Egg hunt on April 7,in the city park.

Time is 1:00 p m.

David Jenkins reminded members the forms for the Activity Calendar are available. The price of 50 cents for each name added and $5.00 for a calendar will remain the same as last year. Early orders are encouraged however May 30, is the deadline for ordering.

April 15: The regular monthly meeting of the American Legion Post # 57. Meeting is at the Legion Hall at 6:00 p m.

April 19: Civic Club meets at 7:00 p m in the fellowship hall of the Christian Church..

April 21: The Legion men cook breakfast for all the community. No charge, however, a donation jar is there if you wish to help with expenses.

Serving is in the Legion Hall from about 8:00 a m till the gravy is gone.

April 22: The Bucklin Community Association hosts a Spaghetti Dinner at the Community Building in the park. Spaghetti, salad, hot bread, homemade dessert and a drink will be served from 11:30 till about 1:00 with carry outs available. All proceeds go to the homecoming fund.

April 26: Bucklin Civic Club will host their Citizen’s Appreciation Dinner in the community building in the park. Time is 11:30 till about 1:00. No donations are accepted, just come and enjoy dinner with your neighbors as a token of appreciation from the Civic Club for your support throughout the year.

Civic Club at Thelma’s President Debbie Reid opened the March 14, meeting of the Bucklin Civic Club at 7:00 p m with all reciting the Club Collect. Roll call was taken with 13 members present. Birthdays celebrated since the last meeting were Cherry Miller, Aleta Casady, LeNell Hughes, Thelma Jones and Colleen McCollum.

Lynn Shipley gave the secretary report and read several thank you notes from recipients of the Valentine flowers and plates.

Following the business portion Thelma Jones had a basket of handmade items she had knitted, tatted, quilted, crocheted and sewn on the machine. The items were kept in a large wicker basket Thelma had made which took a blue ribbon at the Homecoming last year. She urged each of the members to get busy with a project.

Following the Club benediction Thelma Jones and Cherry Miller served refreshments.

Lynn Shipley is to bring the program next month.

Aleta Casady will send the newsletter. Hostesses will be Lynn Shipley and Jasmine Stark. The April meeting will be the 19th at the Bucklin Christian Church at 7:00 p m.

April Fool It started out very innocently. The couple had called to set up appointments for a dentist in Chillicothe. Having come to live in Bucklin from California not so long ago they needed to get some one sort of local. So far, so good.

They left home early to get there in plenty of time and fill out necessary papers. It is always best to plan ahead. So far, so good.

The husband mentioned they should go up through the country and the good wife readily agreed. It was a very enjoyable trip as they commented on the grass greening, trees blooming early and the variety of cows and little calves along the way.

Very pleasant. So far, so good.

While driving along on the highway when they got to town the husband asked if they had passed the Hy-Vee? Said the good wife. “Oh, yes, dear.

It is several blocks back now.” Oh, oh. “ But my dear, What town are we going through ?”, says the husband.

“Why, we are in Kirksville!” said the good wife with a start!

To condense this true story: using their cell phone they called the Chillicothe Dental Office to explain their absence and set up appointments for another day. They had a great breakfast and a really good laugh at themselves. A “self imposed” early April fool trick on these two nice neighbors.

It was decided on their next trip it is fine to let Rick drive but his good wife gets to be the navigator.

They visit and have coffee until about eight so plan to stop in for a visit.

Some Energy Efficiency Related Tax Credits Have Decreased Or Disappeared Since 2005, Americans have benefitted from income tax credits promoting energy efficiency.

However, a University of Missouri tax expert says those credits have changed recently, which could lead to a surprise for some filers. “Some energy efficiency-related credits have decreased or disappeared altogether,� said Andrew Zumwalt, an associate state specialist for financial planning and a member of the University of Missouri Extension faculty. “People need to be aware of these changes to the tax code so they can properly evaluate the costs and options they have when it comes to improving their homes.�

The Non-Business Energy Property Credit, which was enacted in

2005, gave filers a 30 percent tax credit for the cost of energy-efficient home improvements, such as a new furnace or insulated windows. However, in 2011, the credit decreased to 10 percent of improvement costs with a $500 limit placed on the credit.

In 2012, the credit is no longer in place. “This has come to a surprise to many people,�

Zumwalt said. “It also surprises people that not every energy-efficient improvement is eligible for the credit. For example, an energy efficient dishwasher may lower utility costs, but it has no impact on your taxes.�

Country Living Last weekend I had an idea for a family gathering at the pond near our house. I called my sister and she thought it was a great idea, so she came and brought her family and tent with her. I had bought a tent at least 2 years ago thinking, I have 2 boys and they might want to camp out someday. After sending Memphis upstairs to find it, we gathered other things one needs to camp. I have to tell you I am not a fan of camping.

In fact, until this past weekend I have never camped before. So after we had got our things together and made multiple trips to the camp site, we were ready. We ended up with a small group of about 17 or so.

It was very windy last weekend, but we had to have a fire. My brotherin-law had dug a hole for us to build our fire in.

We ended up roasting hotdogs, having baked beans, chips, cookies, and cupcakes. Not too bad for a last minute, thrown together family function. We fished for a few hours with Memphis, my daughter, and my father-in-law landing the biggest catches. After all of that, it was time to set up the tents. My sister and her husband was laying their tent on the ground, spreading it out, pounding stakes in the ground and here I am with NO prior tent experience, looking at the picture on the packaging of my tent. Memphis evidently saw that I was a bit overwhelmed and came over to help and with her came Wade, her boyfriend. They looked at it for just a second and the next thing I knew they had that tent

up and ready for camping. I was impressed my tent looked like a regular camping tent, brown and tan in color, it had windows and a door. My sister chose the next little hill over for her tent destination and they had theirs up and ready to go pretty quick. I was a bit surprised, theirs was white and had 3 pointy peaks on top; I looked at it for awhile and blurted out, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The circus has come to townâ&#x20AC;?.

We sat around the camp fire and visited it was so much fun. Soon it was time for bed, Memphis headed up to the house she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to sleep in a tent. So it was the boys, my niece and nephew, and I in the tent. Gabe kept asking, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do you hear that?â&#x20AC;? I told him I heard the owls, they made noise way into the night. For my first camping experience it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t so bad. We woke up the next morning and went to the house for coffee. Then, back down to the pond for more fishing and hotdogs. The wind picked up a little so we decided it was time to pack up and take the tents down. My tent had actually blown down because of the kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rough housing inside. So there really wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t much to do except roll it up. My sisterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tent turned into a 2 man, 1 woman, and 2 kid project to roll away. I looked over at them and they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the air out of the tent no matter how hard they tried. It was so funny it looked like they were all stuck in a white fluffy marshmallow.

Memphis ran and got the camera so we could remember the tent event. What a fun time we had. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Life in the Country.

This year the following players have been chosen and will attend a banquet in their honor at Central Methodist University campus in Fayette. The Banquet is Wednesday, April 4th, at the Student and Community Center. During the Banquet, the coaches of the year will be announced.
