Phil and Judy Kern Grandview, MO EDEN EARNS BLUE RIBBONS Eden St. Dennis, eleven year old daughter of Jamie and Darla Noah St. Dennis , is a member of the Brookfield YMCA Northstar Competitive Gynmastic team. The team went to Columbia Sunday, March 11, 2012, for competition at the Flipz Gym. Eden earned blue ribbons in bar, floor, vault and beam. She was also runner up in her age group in the hand stand contest after the competition.

One of the coaches for the Northstar team is former Bucklin resident Tammy (Batye) Dauber. Tammy will be remembered by many when she performed with Linda Smith’s Kingdom Kids here in Bucklin several years ago.

BRIDGE WORK ON ROUTE 36 IN MACON COUNTY Weather permitting, March 26-28, MoDOT crews will be doing bridge approach repairs along Route 36 in Macon County. Traffic will be reduced to one lane from Abbey Avenue to the Linn County line. Crews will be working from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

Cautionary signs will be in place.

Please obey all road construction signs and use extra caution while traveling through the work zone.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK ALYSSA MCKENZIE

The American Legion hall was full Saturday night as neighbors gathered for the annual BCA sponsored Irish Stew. Stacey Anders and Lori Davis were in charge of putting the stew together. David Jenkins spruced up the hall with green table cloths and a variety of St. Patrick Day decorations. Doug Anders, BCA President, welcomed the crowd at 6:00 p m and introduced Larry Vobornik. Larry asked the Lord’s blessing on the supper and the evening.

After supper the Hee Haw cast took the stage for the seldom rehearsed but well delivered program.

Lori Davis was director and producer of the stellar Hee Haw cast. Members of the cast were: Ben Williams, Bob Davis, Barry Shipley, Darla Rae Snyder, Jenna Mitchell, Jo Smith, Stacey Anders, Lynn Shipley, Terry Epperly, Doug Anders, Patsie Hughes, Haley Herington, Leighton Reid, Betty Shoemaker, Aleta Casady, Charlie Hughes, Rick Gilmore and Doris Noah. Providing homemade commercials for local businesses at intervals during the production were Glen Montgomery, Heath St. Dennis, Olivia Montgomery and Eden St. Dennis. Darla Noah and David Jenkins were in charge of decorations and set props.

Tucked away in a little corner of Callao is CR’s Hometown Antiques, a little shop filled with treasures from the past.

Owner CR Cauffman and his wife Cayrol have owned the shop since 1992. After moving locations across the street several years ago, 112 Market Street in Callao is now the home for their business.

Inside the front door you can find almost anything from antique church organs to etched glass doors. CR was a graduate of Callao, now a retired school teacher after teaching in Callao for seven years and then Bevier for 20 years. After retirement he made furniture out of rustic barn wood and opened the Antique Shop. There isn’t an item in the store that CR can’t explain its use for and enjoys reliving the past years. Hoping the younger generation will find use for the antiques inside the store The store opens every morning from Monday through Friday. He says he almost never throws anything away, because “you never know who might want it.” Some of the items inside the shop

are from old local houses long past their years, some are from old barns. In past years the Swan Lake School House was brought to the Callao City Park and CR took part in filling it with antique desks and books that the school would have been filled with, along with the smiles of its students during the schools prime.

There is an importance for everyone to know where they came from and not take for granted what we have in today’s age.

CR Cauffman enjoys making memories of the past possible. Through CR’s Hometown Antiques he is able to do just that, so that generations to come will know what once was when a memory is all we have left.

One thing is for certain, we can’t dismiss our small rural communities. You will find some of the greatest treasurers and the most beautiful views. The area may seem small, but it houses the biggest hearts and just the good ole home town courtesy.

Academy of Sciences Regional Contest at CMU Seven area students advance to State Seven area school students have earned top honors at the Region IV competition of the Missouri Junior Academy of Sciences, held recently at Central Methodist University.

The students from Chillicothe, LaPlata and Moberly will now advance to the state contest scheduled for April 13 in Columbia, according to Dr. James “Tiger” Gordon, chair of the division of science, mathematics and computer science at CMU and contest coordinator.

A total of 120 students took part in the Region IV event, Gordon noted. Region IV covers 24 counties in Missouri.

Participants must give an oral presentation of the

results of research projects they have completed, as well as submit a written report of their research.

Students qualifying for the state competition of the Missouri Academy of Science, along with the title of their research project, include: Marshelle Johnston, a senior from Chillicothe High School, “The Effect of Age on Rate and Retention of Learning.”

Grant Roberts, a senior from LaPlata High School, “The Physics of Bullet Penetration.”

Emilee Haley, a sixth grader from Chillicothe Middle School, “The Effect of Milk Source on the Growth Rate of a Baby Goat.”

Trey Batye, an eighth grader from Chillicothe Middle School, “The Effect of Erosion Control Methods on the Amount of Soil Eroded from an Artificial River Bank.”

Marissa Surber, an eighth grader from Chillicothe Middle School, “The Effect of Soil Location on Bioremediation of Contaminated Soils.”

Abigail Lynn Pemberton, an eighth grader from Moberly Middle School, “The Effects of Internal Structure on Towers.”

James Bratcher, an eighth grader from Moberly Middle School, “Conduction.”

Nunan Meat Market Now Open For Business After several months of tearing down, moving, reconstructing, cleaning, butchering and setting up again the Nunan Meat Market at Millard is now open for business.

Gary and Carol Nunan opened Nunan Locker near Hurdland in 2008 doing custom butchering for local farmers and deer processing. After great thought and huge expectations the Nunan’s uprooted and moved their business in order to further serve the community, by making their business more efficient for their customers and keeping their prices comparable to local grocery stores.

Opening on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, Nunan Meat Market processes and sells the same locally grown meat including pork and beef from local

farmers from Knox, Macon and Adair Counties.

The market also offers deli meats and cheeses, a small grocery corner with soda, milk, bread and water and a frozen cooler featuring assortments of meats and pork sausage.

Nunan’s will continue to feature locally raised beef and pork. Following the procedure of purchasing the cow or hog from local farmers, shoving them in the back door through the shoot and butchering them on the premises in the back room. From there they move to the hanging process and then into the cut room and into the cooler. Keeping their business local is their way of saying “Thank You” to their customers and they will continue the local process.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: “Cole’s Motor Sales And Cycles”

ABOVE - Cole’s Bike Shop, located in Bevier, is the result of two Harley-Davidson enthusiasts wishing to bring the convenience of a local bike shop to Macon County. LEFT - Cody and Melissa Cole have been the owners of Cole’s Construction in Bevier for over 21 years, and have operated the Bike Shop since 2003. The shop supplies for all makes and models of motorcycles, as well as offering service and accessories. The couple is active in the community, and host at least 2 charity events each year.

Cole’s Construction has been in Bevier for over 21 years. Cody and Melissa Cole have lived and raised their two boys in Bevier and can’t imagine being anywhere else. Cole’s Construction started in 1991 and going strong today doing everything from residential new construction, commercial projects and buildings of all sizes.

Cody and Melissa have always enjoyed riding their Harley Davidson Motorcycle; however it was inconvenient for them to travel to Columbia every time they needed something. In 2003 they started another business, Cole’s Bike Shop. They supply tires and general parts on all makes and models, as well as selling accessories and novelty items.

In 2010 their son David graduated from Linn State Technical School with a degree in Power Sports Technology and

is now working full time as a mechanic. Kevin Murphy, full time mechanic, graduated from MMI in Phoenix, AZ and specializes in Harley Davidson bikes.

Cole’s Bike Shop also gives back by hosting at least 2 charity events every year. They have helped many charities including the local Food Pantry and Santa Shop.

Cody and Melissa are very excited about launching a new website that will offer a calendar of events as well as ecommerce! Customers will be able to purchase their items directly from the site. Still Kids At Heart

The other day I was reading about Missouri land and fence laws and came across a quote that was from an ancient Indian. “We didn’t inherit our land from our ancestors; we are borrowing it from our children”. So I asked my children if they needed the payment information since we were just borrowing it………Just kidding, but really I think that is such a great way of thinking and I hope we are able to leave our kids with something of value when we leave this earth. But the main thing is I hope they have as many good memories of us as I do of my parents.

My parents lived and worked for us kids, all we had to do was say those three words, “I want that” and a few days later we had it. Our Christmases were crazy! There was a year, we had three Christmases just because my dad would give us our presents early so they would have to go shopping again for us to have something under the tree. One year I my mom had to go to the store to get batteries and my dad gave us our gifts (the second time) in the parking lot before she came back out! I really think he was the bigger kid in this situation. Mom went shopping the third time alone.

Both of my parents were, and still are, kids at heart. One year when I was little, my dad built a boat in our house. He had to take out the picture window to get it out. I can remember having a swing set in our living room because it was too cold outside. Anytime my brother or I would get a riding toy, it never failed, a few days later it had a motor in it! Of course whatever he made, I was the first to jump on and go!! I guess you could say we were a little spoiled, or maybe our parents just never grew up.

To this day, my dad will

My mom on the other hand was no different.

We used to go out and play “Dukes of Hazzard”, yes, this is true. We would all pile in the car and she would go somewhere and do donuts and figure 8’s.

And heaven forbid when the ice was on the roads.

We were out sliding all over town. She would always take us out to the lake to ride our three wheelers or to Kirksville to skate or bowl and we can’t forget the drive in!

My mom was always a great cook. She used to teach cooking classes in Clarence years ago. I always had friends over to cook or bake we even had a few taffy pulls. Just 3 years ago, my mom, aunt and my son and his friend were out jumping hills in a golf cart! Yes, this is true.

They actually wrecked that day and my mom broke her shoulder from flying out of the golf cart.

Do you think she learned anything? No, She would be right back in the seat today! My mom has always been there to help anyone that needed her.

She is the first to put everything on hold and go help anyone.

I could go on and on about my crazy childhood and my younger brother .

But the main thing I want to get across is; make as many good memories as you can today because you’re not promised tomorrow.

A defiled heart voids every good work that we might have done. Our heart and our talk need to coincide. Jesus showed us this when he said, “This people drawled nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with [their]

lips; but their heart is far from me.”

Lip service religion has done so much to hurt the work of the church. It is a big mistake to think the sinner does not know how a born again person should live.

I am going to say something that could offend some of the readers, and I pray that you understand my concern when I say this. If you are not living what you are talking, the man in sin doesn’t need to hear from you.

Ps.51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

The pure heart isn’t learned; it is created in man.

Only God can change the heart.

Through the act of salvation the old passes away, and all things become new.

Caregivers Of Veterans With Chronic Illnesses Often Stressed, Yet Satisfied Veterans are almost twice as likely as the general public to have chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and heart failure. Therefore, veterans may require more assistance from informal caregivers, especially as outpatient treatment becomes more common. A University of Missouri researcher evaluated strain and satisfaction among informal caregivers of veterans with chronic illnesses. The findings show that more than one third of veterans’ caregivers report high levels of strain as a result of taking care of their relatives; yet, on average, caregivers also report being satisfied with their caregiving responsibilities.

Bonnie Wakefield, an associate research professor in the MU Sinclair School of Nursing, says the majority of caregiving responsibilities belong to veterans’ immediate family members, often their wives. Of the caregivers Wakefield surveyed, nearly half reported they felt they had no choice when it came to caring for their relatives.

Wakefield found that only eight percent of caregivers reported that they had high levels of depression, but nearly one-third of caregivers reported high levels of strain. Caregivers’ depression and strain usually resulted from lack of coping strategies and

from caring for veterans with lower self-reported health.

Caregivers who reported greater satisfaction tended to have more outside help, such as support from friends and relatives. Also, those with higher satisfaction levels had developed more strategies to cope, such as regular exercise.

Wakefield suggested caregivers seek outside assistance through websites like www.myhealth. va.gov, a website that provides health information and resources to veterans and their caregivers. She also suggested that clinicians, especially nurses, take time to monitor the caregivers’ stress levels and offer concrete suggestions about ways to alleviate stress.

The study, “Strain and Satisfaction in Caregivers of Veterans with Chronic Illness,” was published in Research in Nursing & Health and was funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI). Wakefield’s coauthors include researchers from the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the MU School of Medicine. Wakefield also is a core investigator for the Center for Comprehensive Access & Delivery Research and Evaluation (CADRE) at the Iowa City VA Health Care System in Iowa City, Iowa.

A Quick and Easy Favorite 2 lbs. Ground Beef 2 Cans Pork & Beans (Van Camp’s) 2 Cans Whole Kernel Corn (Drained) Directions Brown ground beef in deep skillet and drain.

Add salt & pepper to taste. Add corn and pork & beans. Simmer until fully cooked.

Great served with biscuits GROUND BEEF CASSEROLE

5 lbs. Ground Beef 1 Med. Onion (Optional) 1 Box Cream Cheese 1 Can Cream of Mushroom Soup 2 Cans Biscuits Salt & Pepper Directions Brown and drain ground beef and onion (Salt and Pepper to taste). Place in a 9 X 12 baking dish. In separate bowl, melt cream cheese and cream of mushroom soup then stir into ground beef. Mix well then add biscuits on top. Bake at 350 for about 20 min. or until biscuits are golden brown.

Can use tater tots instead of biscuits.Can sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top before adding biscuits.

Meet Callao American Legion and Auxiliary Officers

WENDELL FREEMAN Wendell Freeman, of Callao, became a member of the Callao American Legion Post 360 in 2004.

He was born in Macon and raised on a farm in rural Callao. Wendell graduated from Callao High School in 1963. In the fall of 1965 he joined the US Army Active Reserves and served active duty at Fort Dix, N.J., Camp Perry, Ohio and St. Louis.

Wendell received his final discharge Aug. 31, 1971.

He married Marilyn Perkins and they have one daughter, Anne Freeman, who lives in Jefferson City. Wendell is a retired mail carrier with 35 years of service. He loves being a part of Callao American Legion and serves as vice commander. He also encourages any veteran to join the American Legion.

IRENE WYATT Irene Wyatt, of Bevier, vice president and chaplain of the Callao American Legion Auxiliary, resided on a farm south of Bevier. She was married to the late Robert Wyatt, former Macon R-1 School Administrator. She has two children, Alan Wyatt of Macon, Janet Wyatt of Colorado, two grandchildren and one greatgranddaughter.

Irene worked 28 years with the DM Dealership in Macon and now works part-time at the Macon License Bureau and Wyatt Automotive. She is active with

Bevier Baptist Church and is secretary of the Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary. Irene urges everyone to support our troops and veterans.

Kaseyville Baptist Church Revival April 18 – 21st Callao Christian Church Revival April 22 – 25th. Carry in dinner on Sunday and light meals each evening Macon County Cowboy Church met Thursday evening at the 36 & 3 One Stop Café in Callao. Archie Phillips opened the meeting with a prayer. Ron Thomason led the group in singing. Jim Fitzgerald delivered the message and offered the closing prayer.

The church will continue to meet on Thursday evenings at 7pm. Everyone welcome.

Thought for the Day: Don’t look back you’re not going that way!

Callao C-8 School News Dr. Seuss’s birthday [Friday, March 2nd] was celebrated by the students of Callao on Monday, March 5th due to school being closed for illness on his birthday. Mrs. Barnett, Librarian, organized activities for the students centered around Dr. Seuss’s books. The activities included the following: playing hopscotch with words from Hop on Pop; relay game of balancing cups on plates after listening to The Cat in the Hat; Fox in Socks activity had students wearing socks on their hands & balancing different sized boxes in a relay game; musical numbered feet for a number recognition activity for The Feet Book; breakfast consisted of green eggs and ham for the book Green Eggs and Ham. The students were divided into multi-aged groups. The older students assisted the younger students with the activities. Teachers traveled from station to station with the students to assist with the activities. The celebration concluded with all students being treated with a green egg sugar cookie! What a wonderful day centered around Dr. Seuss literature!!!

The end of the third quarter was Friday, March 9th. Grade cards will be sent home with students this Thursday, March 15th. This is our final day this week as we will be going on spring break from March 16th through March 19th. Students will return to school on Tuesday, March 20th.

Friday morning, March 9 2012, the students and staff of the Bucklin R-2 School District invited members of The American Legion Bucklin Green Hills Post 57 to an appreciation school breakfast. School Superintendent Steve Coulson welcomed the Legionnaires and thanked them for their support of the school. Post 57, with its Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion unit, hosts Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day for students, sponsors Boys and Girls State Delegates, Cadet Patrol, provides an Honor Guard for school activities, Legion Poppy flower art contests, supports school fund raisers, and presents School Legion Awards to students. Surprise Party For Bud Former area residents, Bud and Irene Fessler, have lived in Kansas City the past months due to health issues. Bud was pleasantly surprised when their son ,Joe, mentioned a trip to Brookfield over the week end.

Bud was celebrating his 90th birthday the 10th of March. Mr and Mrs. Joe Fessler set up a surprise party at the Helm St. Bar in Brookfield Saturday morning.

Many of Bud’s old friends dropped in to wish him a happy birthday.

Channing Neimeier Chosen Finalist Channing Niemeier, eighteen year old daughter of Mike and Angie Niemeier, has been busy traveling the past few weeks.

After being chosen Homecoming Queen at Marceline Channing was invited to attend the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee.

The senior at Marceline High School Channing represented her school at the half time show along with other contestants in America’s Homecoming Queen competition. While in Memphis the group was taken on a tour of St. Jude’s Hospital.

The next step for Channing and her family was the Leaders of Tomorrow Kansas and Missouri Homecoming Queen State Finals held at Tiffany Greens Golf Club in Kansas City, Missouri.

Channing is a finalist in this contest. The winner will receive a cash scholarship and an all expense paid trip to the National Finals in California to compete with homecoming queens from other states for the honor of America’s Homecoming Queen.

Channing’s grandmother, Judy Niemeier, accompanied Mike, Angie and Channing to the contest in Kansas City..

Steve, Marla, Shane, and Dillon Stubbs, of Springtown, Texas were visitors of Marla’s mother, Faye Leppin, of Marceline, Monday, March 12th.

The boys are on springbreak from college, and highschool.

They, along with Doyle Leppin, enjoyed lunch and a long visit.

Afternoon visitors were Deloma Gall, Bucklin, and Mary Stufflebean, Marceline.

Wanda Ervie, Bucklin, phoned the Stubb’s family while they were in Marceline as well..

Colton Pfeifer Is Two Nick and Carrie (Jenkins) Pfeifer hosted a birthday party Saturday, March 10, for their son, Colton, as he turned two.

Attending the party held at the Pfeifer home in Chillicothe were Mike and Debbie McGhee and Andy; Jason and Janet Baker and Brooke; Linda Chester and Frances Jenkins. Colton’s sisters, Emily and Hannah, helped with party preparations.

The afternoon was spent visiting as Colton opened his presents. Cake and ice cream was served.

It Is Official This is for you “snow birds” basking in Texas and other warm places till winter is past here in our little spot of Missouri: Harvey Riley reported seeing a buzzard last week.

He told me Saturday evening that the buzzards were back. When questioned if perhaps he just saw an eagle he was definite. It was that sure sign of spring to anyone over 50 years of age. A Buzzard. Hurraaayyyyyy!

Since that reported sighting here is further proof we can store our winter long johns away.

When John Saltsider and I met on our morning walk March 13 we stopped to visit. Right over our heads circled a big black buzzard. John commented the big bird looked hungry and we better get moving. That sounded like good advice.

Folks, the spring frogs are ‘peeping’ in the pond, the early flowers are bursting out with bloom and my rhubarb is up at least two inches this morning.

On The Mend Waldon Teeter is recovering from surgery to correct a heart problem.

As this is being written on March 15, Larry Vobornik is a patient in VA hospital in Kansas City.

He expects to be home by the week end.

Dena Peterson had eye surgery on March 12 at the Pershing Memorial Hospital in Brookfield.

In honor of National Reading Day, Parasol Puppets from Jamesport, Missouri visited Bevier C-4 School to support literacy. Puppeteer, Peter Allen, performed “George and the Dragon” for grades kindergarten through 6th grade. Afterwards, students were able to ask questions about the setting and characters of the play. Other activities for the day included Drop Everything And Read (DEAR time) where all students, faculty, administration, and staff read silently for enjoyment for 20 minutes. Also, a free book was made available for all elementary students to choose. National Reading Day was recognized on Friday, March 9th. National Reading Day is an annual event which celebrates and encourages reading for younger children. National Reading Day is celebrated in thousands of schools all around the United States. This literacy event is designed to help Pre-K through Third Grade students develop the literacy foundation they need to become lifelong learners. Schools, libraries, nonprofit groups and parents participate in a variety of activities with younger readers on National Reading Day.

While you’re having a great time taking photos of the Swiss Alps or the Colorado Rockies, you may not realize it but your travel experience is benefiting your mind. Scientific research agrees that lifelong learning, which includes discovering firsthand new places, people and cultures, is one of the primary factors that lead to better brain health.

More seniors than ever before are planning road trips, cruises, railroad excursions, tours, hiking and biking expeditions to near and far locations. But some of these same travelers are not only choosing resorts, inns, air fare, itineraries and cruises; they are also sharpening their brain by studying the history and culture of the areas and learning the languages. Before they de-

part, they are taking noncredit academic courses to add to their travel experience.

Other travelers take time to read books by the country’s beloved authors, and learn about the local cuisine, music and art.

All of these things help you stay active but they also keep the brain constantly engaged. Scientific research has found that a challenged, stimulated brain may be the key to a long healthy life.

Before you depart from home learn a new language or at least a few phrases. One of the most important things you can do to stimulate better brain health is to learn new language skills. You may not have time to immerse yourself in a language, but the more time you spend learning the faster you will

learn. There are numerous ways to learn French, German and other languages.

Join a class or listen to audio tapes or ask someone who speaks the language to teach you.

Other planning steps include making two copies of your passport. Take one copy with you and put in a separate location from the actual passport.

Leave the second copy at home. Make a copy of your health insurance card from your home health plan and keep the copy in a location separate than your card. Take a mix of money such as one credit card, possibly a debit card, and cash including several $1 dollar bills. Don’t keep all of your money in your wallet. Instead, divide it so you have it in more than one location in case your wallet is lost or stolen.

It’s a good idea to have a health check-up before you leave home. If you’re traveling to a tropical or sub-tropical area, check health advisories for your destination.

Always wear a seat belt in a taxi or auto. Avoid taking cabs after dark in developing countries or to areas far from your hotel.

Don’t travel anywhere at night by foot or driving if you feel the area has questionable safety concerns.

Keep in mind if you are in a crowd waiting in line at a restaurant or buying tickets to a popular attraction you may also be sharing the crowded space with pickpockets. Consider wearing a money belt inside your skirt or slacks so that that it can’t be seen from the outside.

Prom is a short form of the word “promenade,” which was a march of guests at the beginning of a ball or some other formal event. Back in the 1890s, elite colleges in the Northeast started holding proms to instill social skills and etiquette in their students, much the way debutante balls did for students in the South.

The dances were often just for senior class members and heavily chaperoned. While important in the college setting, proms didn’t take on an iconic status until they emerged in high schools.

In the 1920s, proms became quite common, and by the 1930s, they were being held in high school gyms across the country.

Attendees dressed in their Sunday best and danced to the tunes of a local band or a record player. With the economy booming in the 1950s, proms became more expensive, elaborate events. Girls made special trips to find the right gown, while many proms were moved to bigger, better locations. By the 1980s, proms had become quite lavish affairs, and competition for the title of prom queen was intense.

Proms are not exclusive to the United States. Other countries have them too, often in conjunction with graduation. Here are some examples: • In Argentina, fiestas de graducaion parties are held for students finishing their last year of high school.

• In Canada, banquets are held for graduating seniors, family and invited friends with presentations in song and speech and an address from the head of the school.

• In Germany, high school graduation is celebrated with an Abifier, Abi-party or Abi-ball, at which students wear tuxedos and ball gowns. A strict order of events is followed, starting with the welcome and introductions, student awards ceremony and a series of student-organized activities.

Music from the school band follows, and the evening ends with a DJ playing music.

• In Ireland, the Debutantes Ball or Debs is a formal dance for students who have just graduated from high school. Depending upon the school,

a Deb can take place in July, August, September or October. Some allboys schools even have them in January, February or March. Debs involve minimal supervision and alcohol.

• In Italy, a Mak II 100

is held for graduates during their final days of school. Students perform cabaret shows in which they parody their teachers.

• In Sweden, the Studentbalen or Student Ball is held during the last

weeks before graduation.

The event can be very formal and require white ties.

What started out as a simple celebration for graduates can now cost thousands of dollars to put on and hundreds of dollars to attend. What a change!

Six Risks Of Online Services…

And How to Avoid Them Ten years ago, you might have bought a book online or sent flowers using an online service. Those were one-time deals.

You used an online services, but you did not form an on-going relationship with the online business that provided it.

Fast forward to today. Now, almost every function a small business needs in order to be successful has become, or is becoming, an online service... and many of them are not transactional (that is, onetime services), but have become woven into the operation of the small business entity on a daily basis. In other words, small businesses do have to form relationships with those who provide online services, because they’ll be relying on them more and more as time goes on.

Whether it’s online banking, online legal services, online accounting, online back-office systems, online payroll, online human resources, online information-feeds etc., businesses that subscribe to these services must beware of certain risks... and learn how to avoid them.

1. Don’t be a pioneer. There’s a saying from the early days of office automation that you can tell who the pioneers of computerization are because they are the ones who have the arrows in their backs!

Online companies come and go, and it is always best to let someone else with deep pockets test them out. This is doubly true for any service that is going to be mission-critical for your business such as an online order system or accounting program.

While it may be tempting to be an early-bird with a new service, and enjoy its benefits as soon as possible, you should at least run the new system alongside your current one in case it just does not work out well. When you are looking for mission-critical software, there is no prize for being first!

2. It’s not about price. Price means little on the Internet. There are services with very low monthly fees that are as good as, or better than, those with very high costs. When it comes to hard-goods, it is true that the bitterness of poor quality will endure long after the sweetness of low price dissipates, but when it comes to electrons over the wires, it is never about price... it is always about value. The highest price service is worthless if it does not bring the value that your business needs, and the lowest price service is invaluable if it does.

Often vendors will offer a “good, better, and best” selection. Usually the price of the version is in direct proportion to the number of features that are included.

If you are not going to use many of the bells and whistles in the software, it is a good idea to dial-down to a less expensive model or vendor.

3. Avoid a marriage. We all know and all hate long-term, restrictive, no-exit contracts, similar to how the mobile communications industry prices their services. (There is one small online business service that contracts with customers on a month-to-month basis and advertises, “We’re not your cell phone company!”)

Avoid being hamstrung by a long-term captive contract, or one where you may have to pay an exit fee. Find services that are on a pay-as-you-go basis, preferably by credit card... which give you some added protection. You also want to see if you can find information on how often they raise their prices (and have done so in the past.) The best way is to do this by getting contact information for some of the vendor’s long-term clients as references and checking them. (If a vendor won’t give references, run away.)

4. Do it right the first time. You’ve heard the saying, “There is never time to do it right, but always time to do it over!”

The holy grail of online services is vendor lock-in. Banks give away online banking because they know once you have spent the time setting it up, you are not likely to leave for light and transient reasons... they have a customer for life. Change is hard... not impossible... but hard.

You want to find the right vendor the first time... and that will mean casting a wide net and trying out several systems.

This means you have to look at as many systems as you can find... from cheap to expensive. Find five or six systems that are in your budget range, and give each of them a trial for a week or two. You will soon learn which ones work for your business. More importantly, you will learn which ones you like using.

5. Avoid a pre-pay demo. Never sign up for service that you have not had an opportunity to try. And avoid services that require a credit card number even though they say they will not charge it unless you join. When you demo a system, involve coworkers, associates, and members of your team who will use the system and make sure it works for them and that they become “invested” in it.

Many vendors will have an online demo that is the same as the “real” online version. Most will require you to sign up (with or without a credit card) so that they can bug you with follow-up emails and phone calls. Many business owners will set up a “throw-away” email address for this... like accounting-trial@your-domain.com which they will give out and will delete when the selection has been made.

6. Beware of off-shore, third-world services. If you have a complaint and the service you are using is located in Botswana, well, as Jerry Seinfeld used to say, “Good luck with all that!” Stick with U.S.-based services, especially those in CA and NY and FL which have the strongest consumer protection laws. If you get some guy with an exotic accent in another country on the phone who says he is “Peggy,” you’ve got a problem!

Even if the service is excellent, if there are time-zone issues, and the resolution of questions and problems could be delayed. And don’t count on so-called “24/7 phone service” because most of these are call-centers that do nothing more than take down the info and tell you someone will call you back... which rarely happens... or if it does... it is three days later.

Online services can give a small company access to the same “infrastructure” that the big-guys have. But the big-guys often have specialized staff members to “vet” online services that the small business lacks. Also, a big company can bounce back from a “bad choice” which is difficult for the company without deep pockets. It is more important for the small business to make a good choice than a bad one!

If you choose an online vendor the same way you would choose a lawyer or doctor or CPA -- one that has a trackrecord, good references, and does not try to wrap you in a captive contract -- you will make a good choice.

Sometimes, it is hard to choose scientifically. Sometimes you just have to go with “your gut,” but minimize your risks by taking the time to get references, and look at services that have been “out there” for more than a year. Follow these guidelines, and you will avoid making a bad decision.

The Long Branch Area YMCA Gymnastics Team recently competed in Columbia, Missouri at the Flipz USA Gymnastics Heart of Missouri Gymnastics League Qualifying Meet.

The competition was held on March 10-11, with teams participating from around the State.

Sydney Mahan was also a finalist in the handstand competition at the end of the meet. Coach Lisa Hamilton accompanied the girls during competition. The team is coached by Hamilton with assistant coaches Danielle Odenthal and Emma McDowell.

Cool Season Vegetables Give Gardens An Early Start To Season

Red, ripe tomatoes might be the most common image of gardening, but cool season vegetables are the true bastion of spring.

Vegetables like broccoli, chard and spinach kick off the growing season despite being relegated to a lesser role in people’s minds, the stepchild of the garden patch.

These varieties are chock-full of nutrients, offer more produce per square foot and begin the growing season long before warm season vegetables bear fruit.

“Cool-season vegetables function better in cooler temperatures, and can also withstand light frosts or fairly heavy freezes if properly hardened. Some, like cabbage, withstand temperatures as low as the mid-20s,” said David Trinklein, a University of Missouri Extension state horticulturalist.

Cabbage keeps good company. Cauliflower, radish, lettuce and other “salad crops” also thrive in early gardens.

Most Missourians will begin seeding these varieties in late March and early April if weather allows. Home gardeners can also buy readily-available transplants found at many local stores. When getting into the garden, pay attention to wetness for fear of adversely altering soil structure. “Late winter and early spring snows or rain keep the soil wet longer since the soil has not warmed yet, which helps with drying.”

To test if soil should be worked, form a ball with it in your hand and strike it with the heel of your other hand. If it doesn’t crumble, conditions are likely too wet.

For gardeners who wish to start their own seeds indoors, the general rule is to count backwards from the anticipated outdoor planting date.

For example, gardeners wishing to plant cabbage plants in early April will need to start seeds in-

doors 5-6 weeks before that date to grow transplantable size plants.

Unlike warm season crops, most cool season plants are grown for their vegetative parts, not their fruit.

Cole crops are good examples of humans giving into their inner herbivore. The term cole derives from the Latin “caulis,” which refers to the herbaceous or woody stem that bears leaves and flowers. In broccoli and cauliflower, we eat those immature flowers.

For cabbage and Brussels sprouts we eat the spherical cluster of immature leaves often called heads.

With spinach and lettuce we eat leaves or, in the case of chard, petioles.

Others, like radish, allow us to snack on the roots.

Most cool season vegetables pack a particularly healthy punch. They are high in vitamins and minerals, especially for the relative amount of area they require to grow.

That benefit is bolstered by high yields that can be harvested.

“We call it square foot gardening. A good example is spinach, which is extremely productive in small areas and loaded with vitamins and minerals while making the most of the space it occupies,” Trinklein said.

“That goes hand-in-glove with raised bed gardening because it allows us to do a better job of amending the soil, draining the soil and planting early to get the most out of our space in a limited gardening area.”

“When temperatures warm, cool season vegetables start to use more food than they manufacture, which is not conducive to high yield,” Trinklein said. “When mid-June arrives in most cases it’s just too hot for cool season vegetables to thrive in Missouri, or they suffer in quality.”

Spring 2012 Could Be Worst Ever For Allergies It seems as though every spring allergy comes in like a lion and roars out like...an even bigger lion. The 2011 spring allergy season was a miserable one, with recordbreaking pollen levels, just as the 2010 allergy season was before it. So should we expect each spring allergy season to be worse than the last, in an eternal one-upmanship that sends us running for the tissue box or the asthma inhaler?

Probably so. And the pattern could hold true for fall allergies as well.

The culprit? Climate change, the researchers said.

“The seasons are getting longer—they’re starting earlier and pollens are getting released earlier,” says Dr. Stanley Fineman, president-elect of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and an allergist at the Atlanta Allergy and Asthma Clinic.

“And not only is there warmer weather, there tends to be more CO2 in atmosphere.” CO2, or carbon dioxide, feeds plants and leads to a greater release of pollen, and sometimes that pollen is more potent and more allergenic than it was when there was less CO2 in the atmosphere.

But Dr. Fineman points to another impact of climate change, and one you may not have ever associated with asthma or allergies—thunderstorms.

Climatologists have noted that climate change will lead to an increase in the frequency and intensity of severe storms, and Dr. Fineman says that quite a few studies have linked thunderstorms to a greater incidence of asthma-related hospitalizations. It’s called “thunderstorm asthma,” and although doctors haven’t pinned its cause to a specific element in severe weather, they suspect it has something to do with all the pollen and particulate matter that thunderstorms stir up.

Ironically, one solution for resolving both climate change and the worsening allergies it causes is the painfully high gas prices we’ve all had to pay recently. Numerous surveys have shown that as prices rise, sales of gasoline decline.

That means people are driving less and their cars are spewing fewer pollutants, including CO2, into the air.

“Studies have shown that if we can reduce the amount of pollution and exhaust fumes, we can reduce the problems that people with allergies and asthma have,” Dr. Fineman says. “It’s less likely to cause flare-ups.”

Country Living Looks and feels like spring has sprung, and I am so thankful. Even though winter was as mild as it could be I am ready for the green grass that I see coming on. With nice weather approaching it opens the door to many outside activities. Some activities are enjoyed more than others but none the less need to be done. While cleaning out those flower beds I bet you will already notice new shoots of flowers coming. We have already cleaned up the yard from all the hay and other things the boys have seem to scatter around over the winter. As we were cleaning and picking up various things we soon realized nearly all the “junk” was Gabe’s. I told him we couldn’t keep all the wire and strings from the small square bales he had fed over the winter. I might as well have told him we were selling him to the gypsies. He got mad and stomped around telling me “I can’t have nothing around here, everybody wants to through my stuff away”. I explained to him when he grows up and has his own yard he can do what he wants. He can put things where he would like them, but that’s not going to fly now. So in ten years or so look for a new business, Gabe’s Junk Yard. As your summer travels take you down the road be sure to look for baby calves. In my opinion there is nothing cuter than a baby calf feeling its oats, running and jumping through the air, or

stretching out on the ground enjoying the sun. We are also incubating baby chicks, we have tried this before will little success, but this time I think we’ve got it.

We are going to have this batch late next week and start another one as soon as we can. The kids and I have already started some tomato, green pepper, and basil from seed. I usually start these on my own in my small green house but those straight line winds took care of the green house for me. Spring and summer is a busy time for my family and we enjoy it so much. I hope you are able to get out and enjoy these nice days. That’s Life in the Country.

I told my husband about it and he said, “I think you should try it”. So I gave it some thought and wrote my first article. I showed it to my husband and asked him what he thought? He said it was terrible and needed work, that made me mad. So I tried again and created the “Snow Flake” article, which was my first article for this new paper. I would like to Thank everyone for their encouragement and a special Thanks to my husband who believed I could do it, even when I didn’t.
