Santa Visits Farmers and Merchants Bank in DeWitt

The schools of the DeWitt School District will be dismissed December 22-January 2 for Christmas Break. Classes will resume at the regular time on Monday, January 5, 2015. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, everyone!

THE GILLETT FARMERS AND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB

The Gillett Farmers and Businessmen’s Club will host the 72nd Annual Coon Supper on Saturday, Janaury 10, 2015. The Coon Supper will be held in the Gillett Elementary Gymnasium (313 S. 6th Street, Gillett, AR 72055). The doors will open and the meal will be served at 6pm with the program beginning at 6:30pm. Menu will be the same as last year: coon, babyback ribs, brisket, rice, sweet potatoes, and cake.

LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT December 5, 2014 – Officer Johnathan Powell was dispatched to Cormier Rice Mill to take a report of an accident. Upon arrival, Powell spoke to Cormier Employee, Ron Bales, who told him JB Hunt Driver, Willis Trahan, hit an electric pole, knocking out electricity to two Cormier buildings. No electric lines were knocked down, but Bales said the employees saw sparks on the lines when the pole was struck. Dispatch contacted Entergy concerning the outage. Bale said that he did not witness the accident. Powell then spoke to Trahan and he told him that he was moving out of the way for another truck to get through, that the pole was in his blind spot, and he backed into it. Trahan showed Powell the spot on his trailer where he struck the pole. Powell saw wood chips on the right rear corner of this trailer, and two corresponding chips in the pole, where his truck likely hit.

Powell also spoke to Cormier employee, Aaron Armstrong. He told Powell that he was present when the truck struck the pole, and that he saw sparks run from one end of the electric wire to the other. December 5, 2014 – Officer Johnathan Powell was dispatched to #33 Cedar Circle in reference to an attempted break in. While driving down Cedar St., Powell was waved down by Brent London, the resident at that address. London told Powell that a white male with torn up jeans was going to houses on Cedar Circle and beating on people’s doors. Powell told him he would patrol the area for that individual. While patrolling the neighborhood, dispatch told Powell that London called again and said he saw the individual at the intersection of Cross St. and Cedar St. Powell went to that location and met Aaron Gibbs. Looking at Gibbs, his hair was disheveled, his eyes were red and watery, he smelled of intoxicating beverages, his shirt was dirty, and his left pants leg was ripped from the bottom up to the pocket exposing his entire left leg. Gibb’s demeanor was confused, and he was unable to answer even simple questions. His speech was slow and slurred. Powell asked Gibbs what he was doing out walking the streets that time of night, and he said that he was

trying to go home. Powell told him that he would help him get home and asked where he lived. He replied that he did not know. He then asked Powell where he was, and Powell replied, “DeWitt.” Gibbs said, “I live in DeWitt.” Powell asked him what his address was, and he replied again that he did not know. Powell asked Gibbs what he was doing on Cedar Circle knocking on people’s doors, and he said that he didn’t know. After talking to Mr. Gibbs for several minutes, and getting nothing other than “I don’t know” as an answer, Powell was contacted by dispatch and told that Gibbs had been involved in a domestic dispute earlier in the day, which was handled by Deputy Randy Bateman. Powell called Bateman, and he said Gibbs was intoxicated when he dealt with him earlier in the day, and that he was nearly arrested. Being that Gibbs was intoxicated, walking the streets, and disturbing local residents, combined with the fact that he could not give any answers to questions; Powell placed Gibbs under arrest for public intoxication and transported him to Arkansas County Detention Center.

Suzie Kay McFarlin age 54 of Agra, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at her home with her family by her side. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 20, 2014 at Church of the Firstborn in Carney. Brother Randall Wright and Brother John Rossiter officiated. Interment will follow at Carney Cemetery, Carney, Ok. Arrangements are entrusted to Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing, Ok. Suzie was born on January 19, 1960 in DeWitt, Arkansas to the late Henry and Treva (Mills) Mannis. She grew up and attended school in DeWitt. Suzie married Albert McFarlin on February 5, 1977 in DeWitt, Ark. They made their home around the Stillwater/Glencoe area. Suzie worked for the Iowa Tribe at their Mini-Mart for five years and had recently worked for the Maveric in Agra. She was a member of the Church of the Firstborn and was baptized at age 13. Suzie loved playing with her grandchildren. Suzie is survived by her husband Albert of the home, son Daren McFarlin and wife Chaney of Perkins, daughters DeShea McCombs and husband Todd of Glencoe, Shanna McFarlin and husband Larry of Ft. The Most Misunderstood Truth on Earth By William Wood I speak of the love that God has for His created beings! Far too many Christians believe that our Creator sits in Heaven with a large club in His nail scarred Hands, waiting for His people to make some kind of a failure so He can bash us. When in fact the nail scars in His Hands are crowning proof that He gave His Life on the Cross to make legal payment for every failure we would ever make in life’s journey. That is if we can find it in our heart to repent! A parent’s love for their off-spring is a dark shadow of The Love God has for His created beings. It is past our ability to make the proper comparison between our love for each other, and God’s love for us! Words fail as, once we get a glimpse into The Heart of God, to try and compare it with anything on Earth. But we will try one, and perhaps it will give a glimmer of light. If we stood on the shore of the great Pacific Ocean and viewed the vast expanse of water that stretches out past the horizon, then we dipped a thimble full of that water and held it in our hand, we would have the same chemicals in the thimble full of water as is contained in the ocean. But there would be no way to measure the number of thimbles full of water that is in the Pacific Ocean. This is how God’s love is, it cannot be measured by the human mind, but thanks be to God, it can be believed. It is the cure for everything that is wrong on earth. It will heal every relationship, it will heal every disease, it will stop every war, it will forgive every sin. It will make a man in a tuxedo hug the neck of man in blue-bib overalls. And last but not least, it will take us to Heaven. Dear friends, be reminded that we were put here on Earth to find out where we are going when we leave. There are two places, and we will all end up in one or the other! The great revelation is that God had planned that we ourselves must make this choice. Did you know lost sinner that God does not send sinners to hell! They choose that route for themselves, by not accepting God’s plan of salvation for the soul. Who, in their right mind, would desire to go into the fires of destruction? But by not choosing to serve your Creator, you have but one destination left open to you. You can call on Him today, from wherever you may be; at home, in your car, in a hospital, in jail, or just still alive somewhere. He has sworn to hear your cry, and give you the desire of your heart. Do you believe that? Give Him a try. He has enough love left, even for you. He was born to die, so that we can live here on Earth, then in Heaven. Amen

A Thought By Michael P. Daniel For Zion’s sake I will not hold My peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a lamp that burns. The Gentiles shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory. You shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of The Lord will name. You shall also be a crown of glory in the hand of The Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no longer be termed Forsaken, nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate …” Isaiah 62:1-4 NKJV You’ve no doubt heard the story of how a frog can be placed into a pot of water at room temperature, but will not try to escape the pot as the water is slowly brought to a boil. The increase in the water’s temperature is so gradual that the body (and mind!) is given time to acclimate until the boiling water begins to do its damage. Of course we cannot imagine this happening to us because it is impossible for us to comprehend such a thing unless we actually experience it ourselves. We would like to believe we are smart enough to jump out of a pot of water that begins to boil, but this is part of what social science understands about “conditioning”. Over a period of time we go through changes we hardly notice. We fail to understand how easily we are conditioned over time. Israel went through the same social conditioning. They were taught about their own religion, of course (assuming they put forth the effort to be taught), but they were conditioned to the surrounding cultures they were previously supposed to have completely destroyed. The Lord had assured Israel He would drive out all the “-ites” whose religious and social practices were detestable to The Lord, but this would happen only if Israel would faithfully follow The Lord’s instruction to the letter. They did not, as we know, so there were remnants left of a culture The Lord knew would entice Israel. This reality of how easily humans are conditioned is why St. Paul encouraged the Ephesians to “walk circumspectly” (5:15) – that is, “think” about things as we perceive them and take nothing for granted – to think about things through the Scriptures and The Lord. If we only react or respond impulsively, then we will do what is pleasing to our physical senses with little thought toward what The Lord would ask of us, ultimately taking His love for granted. Although we are not offered excuses, the reality of how easily we can be enticed will not stop The Lord from doing what He intends to do through Israel. The Lord intends not only to bless Israel but to bless the Gentiles through Israel’s “righteousness”. So maybe we can see how easily Israel had been “conditioned” away from The Lord so that through the Exile, The Lord would “recondition” His people back to Himself! Especially considering The Story about to unfold in the season of Advent, surely we can see the great lengths to which The Lord will go to redeem His people, release us from our self-imposed prisons and chains, and give us the Life He has intended for us since the beginning! All we have to do is respond with our choices, our lives, our decisions – and The Lord will take care of the rest! Let not another moment slip past. Embrace the reality of this Love, and let the Holy Spirit teach us! Lord, bless Your Church! And come soon, Emmanuel! Blessings, Michael

The Perfect Christmas Gift By Pastor Steve Ellison Every one of us has faced the difficult task of purchasing a Christmas gift for the individual who already has everything. In reality it only seems that this person has everything. No person has everything. However, God does have everything. God states in Exodus 19, Deuteronomy 10, Psalm 24, Psalm 50, and 1 Corinthians 10 that the whole world and all it contains and all who live on the earth belong to Him. God has everything and needs absolutely nothing from us. Christmas is nothing, if it is not a celebration of the birthday of God the Son. What could a human bring as a gift to the One who really does have everything? John 1 says that all things were created through Jesus, that nothing was created apart from Him. Colossians 1 says that all things were created through Him and for Him and that all things are held together by Him. Jesus has everything; He has no needs. However, Jesus has a want; He wants our love. Jesus stated in John 14 that the one who keeps His commandments is the one who loves Him. 1 John 2 and 1 John 3 provide a more complete explanation of this love that Christ spoke of. Love is not some theoretical, undiscoverable, immeasurable mush. Love can be observed and measured. Keeping the commands of Christ is loving Christ. Christ gave quite a few commands but I would like to focus on the last command that He gave before ascending to the Father. Matthew 28 records Jesus telling His disciples to evangelize and disciple the whole world. In this passage, Jesus specifically told the disciples to teach others to keep His commands. The gift that Jesus longs to receive from us is

for us love Him which is verified by keeping His commands. It seems to me that the last command given just prior to ascension would carry great weight. Gordon Mote Gives Concert in Arkansas County

God gives ordinary people extraordinary talents and abilities, and world-famous gospel singer Gordon Mote continued to prove he was one of those people when he performed at First Christian Church in Stuttgart December 12. Mote, who was born blind, started playing the piano when he was only three years old. He astounded his family one Thanksgiving by playing “Jesus Loves Me” on the piano. What could be called a child prodigy, he describes as one of God’s miracles. “That was the first time I sat down and played a song,” he said. “That’s how you know it’s a miracle from God, because threeyear olds just don’t sit down and start playing something. I’ve been playing ever since then and trying to get better every day.” Mote, who already had a solo career, joined Bill Gaither and the Gaither Vocal Band in 2006 and performed with them for six and a half years. Since 2012, he has been focusing on his solo career although he still occasionally performs with the Vocal Band. “When you leave an organization or personnel changes, everybody thinks somebody’s mad at somebody or somebody’s not happy with somebody. That wasn’t the case with us. I just felt that it was time to move on. I just felt like God was calling me to do more of the solo thing,” Mote said. Although his roots are in gospel music, the singer/ songwriter has a wide array of musical tastes and has performed with various entertainers of all genres such as Lionel Richie, James Taylor, Bob Seger, Alan Jackson, and Rascal Flatts, just to name a few. For example, on his latest album “All Things New” Mote even gets a little help from a few close friends like Scotty Mccreery, Josh Turner, Sheryl Crow, Darious Rucker, and Matthew West on his song “Do You Believe in Love?” “I’ve worked with just about everybody, and they are just great people,” Mote said. And the connection goes beyond just the stage and/or the studio. Everyone keeps up with each other, as evidenced by his occasional texts from county singer Blake Shelton. Mote, who describes himself as an overnight success ten years in the making, does have some ad-

vice for new and upcoming singers in the music world. “Don’t do it because you think you’re going to make a lot of money. Do it because you love it. It’s getting so hard to make a living in the business now, and you are going to get told ‘No’ so many times, so it better be your passion.” Although the Alabama native grew up in a Christian home and gave his heart to Christ at eight years old, he still has soul-searching questions just like everyone else. “Just because you are in the ministry doesn’t mean your life is perfect. I have plenty of questions. There are plenty of times that I am discouraged and I want an answer right now. I am not very patient,” Mote said. Despite the impatience though, Mote is quick to say that God has all of those answers, and they can all be found in the Bible. “That’s our roadmap for life. Sometimes they don’t just jump out and hit you in the face. Sometimes I think God wants us to search for it and really search our hearts and be in close contact with him for those answers,” he said. As far as life-changing moments go, Mote attributes 911 and the bombing of the World Trade Center as his “aha moment.” He was watching the news coverage that fateful day while he was in the studio. At lunch he phoned his wife, Kimberly, and told her that he felt like what he was doing did not make a difference. “I’ve seen the power that music has. I’ve seen how a song can change a heart, how a song can change a life. But that day I just felt like here we are. The Twin Towers have gone down. So many people have lost their lives, and I’m in here trying to help somebody make a career. I just didn’t get it. I was so discouraged for a couple of days.” It wasn’t very long after that though that his rightful place in the universe was reaffirmed when he played on Alan Jackson’s song “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?” He recalls that when Jackson played the song for him for the very first time he thought, “That was His [God’s] way of telling me, ‘You are doing what I want you to do. Don’t doubt my plan for you.’ ” According to the father of three who describes himself and his concerts as an ‘open-book’, it all boils down to two things at the end of the day: the song and keeping it real. Motes has seen all facets of the music world as an artist, musician, and a fan, but he says the song and being able to communicate it is the most important thing. “You can be the best musician or the best singer in the world, but it’s all about the song and being able to communicate it.” Mote’s down-to-earth personality exudes humbleness, and he will tell you that what you see is what you get. Mote explained, “People just want to know who you are, and they will love you no matter what if you’ll just show them you’re real with all of your bumps, bruises, moles on your nose and whatever it is you’ve got. That’s what I try to do anyway…just try to be real.”

EAST Lab Knits Hats for Arkansas Children’s Hospital

The DeWitt Middle School Student Council held a talent show Friday, December 12th. The students could bring one canned good to get in to the talent show and another canned good to purchase popcorn and water. Clay Dollar wanted the kids to come up with something “community minded” and so they decided to hold the talent show and collect canned goods for the Food Pantry. The EAST Lab students in Mrs. Carole Anderson’s class are knitting hats for Arkansas Children’s Hospital. This is part of the Knitting for Noggins program sponsored by Arkansas Children’s Hospital. They posted on Face-

book about needing yarn and received yarn donations from the community. They have even had some donated as far as California. They have completed 60 hats and their goal is 100 by February 1, 2015.

All good things must come to an end. The December 9th meeting of the Quorum Court was not only the last meeting of the year, but it was also the last meeting for Arkansas County Judge Glenn “Sonny” Cox, who has served as Arkansas County Judge for 22 years. Justice Tom Hasty presented Cox a plaque commemorating his service to the county from January 1, 1993, to Dec. 31, 2014. “I have served for 35 years on the Quorum Court, and I have served under several different judges. Sonny has been the most hands on, dedicated judge that I have served under,” Hasty said. “He’s got the good of Arkansas County at heart, and he has worked as hard as he could work to make this county better.” “I want to thank the people of Arkansas County for electing me, and I want to thank the people I have worked with,” Cox said. Cox told incoming Judge Eddie Best, “You have a good staff coming on to work with.” Cox then presented outgoing Justice Ryan Eagle with a plaque commemorating his dedication and service on the Quorum Court from 2011-2014. “You raised questions sometimes that needed raising, and I think the county is a lot better for your service,” Cox told Eagle. During the financial report, Arkansas County Treasurer Charles Albert Horton reported to the Court that the ending balance for November was $5,314,519.11, which is $800,000 more than last year. Quorum Court members then spent a majority of

the meeting considering several appropriation ordinances concerning various areas and departments of the budget. In a lot of these cases, the Court considered the reappropriation or moving around of funds within the budget. All of these ordinances passed. In other business the Court unanimously passed an ordinance keeping the meeting time and place of the monthly Arkansas County Quorum Court meetings the second Tuesday of every month at 9:30 a.m. at the DeWitt Courthouse. Architect Bob Schelle from Cabot was on hand to present preliminary building plans for the rebuilding of the Stuttgart annex that was destroyed recently in a fire. Cox told the Quorum Court the county will receive $1,650,000 from insurance to go towards the building. Schelle presented to the Court plans for a one-story as well as a two-story building. Both plans were approximately the same square footage as the building that was lost in the fire. Justice Tom Hasty asked Schelle, “Do you feel good about being able to build a building like we want with the amount of money that we’ve got?” Schelle confirmed that they would. Plans were discussed for future meetings with the architect in order to continue to keep things moving forward. The county courthouses in DeWitt and Stuttgart and the Arkansas County Road Department will be closed for Christmas December 23 at noon through December 26. They will reopen December 31 for end of the year business. New Year’s Day will be observed Thursday, January 1, 2015.

By Darla Grantham GILLETT EHC CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS The Gillett Extension Homemakers Club held its Christmas meeting on Tuesday, December 16, at The Willows in DeWitt for a Dutch-treat lunch. Eight members were present and enjoyed the delicious food and the decorations provided by The Willows. Margie Hackney, club president, called the meeting to order. Rose Ella Smith read an inspirational message based on Isaiah 7:14 reminding everyone to reconnect with our faith all year, not just

Gillett News at Christmas. Anita Trimble read the thought for the month: “Knowledge humbles great men, astonishes the common man, and puffs up the little man,” by an anonymous author. Smith had a word game of scrambled Christmas songs that everyone enjoyed. Jeannie Fletcher, who was celebrating her birthday that day, received the gift for winning. Hackney brought a door prize for the meeting, and Dorothy Connelly guessed the correct number to win. Hackney also brought a

two-year pocket planner and pen for each person. Becki Weinrich and Arlene Ferguson brought Christmas cards and candy canes for everyone. Connelly, secretary, called roll with the question, “What is your favorite thing about Christmas time?” Most of the answers were similar, including family, friends, gathering and giving, music such as the cantata by the Community Choir, and, of course, Christ. The minutes were read and accepted, and the treasurer’s report, which included the club’s donation to the Gillett Angel

Tree, was approved. The members thoroughly enjoyed sharing memories of Christmas from their childhoods. Connelly read the recipe for the Christmas Blessing Mix, explaining what each ingredient in the snack mix symbolized for the Christmas season. Thelma Connelly was also present. The meeting closed with the Membership Pledge. The January meeting will be on Tuesday, January 20, at The Paddy in Gillett at 2 p.m. with Smith as hostess.

Dear Santa, My name is Kolt and I’m a year and a half old. I’m really looking forward to spending this Christmas with my family. My mommy says I slept through last Christmas but I’m really grateful for all the gifts you left for me and my big brother. This year has been tough for a little fella like myself, but I’ve been working really hard rolling over, learning to sit up, and enjoying going to school. My favorite toys are the kind that light up and that I can turn on and off myself. Mommy and Daddy tell me it has something to do with cause and effect or something like that. Santa, let me be really honest with you. My big Christmas wish is to go to Chicago this summer and meet a lot more families that have kiddo just like me. The CHARGE Syndrome Foundation only holds its conference every two years, so I was way too little to go to the last one. Mommy and Daddy are working really hard to get everything together so we can go, and are already having to start planning for the trip. My wish is for everyone to be healthy to make the trip. I hope you, Mrs. Claus, the reindeer, and all the elves had a great year! P.S. If you could bring my big brother, Kash, something extra special.
