CITY CHRISTMAS CLOSINGS

City of DeWitt Offices will be closed December 24 and 25 for Christmas, and December 31 and January 1 for the New Year.

With visitors from all over the state, the Arkansas County Bicentennial was a huge success. Visitors were able to learn the history of various places in Arkansas County, as well as view historical documents from the vaults. A documentary called “On Solid Ground: The River Rats of Arkansas� directed by Melanie Masino was shown throughout the day, and much history was learned. People were dressed in timeperiod costumes to represent the various styles of clothing worn throughout the 200 years of Arkansas County’s history, and a contest was held for the best costume. Children from all county’s elementary schools were asked to submit art for a contest and winners were selected. Cake was cut, proclamations were made and everyone had a grand time.

HOLIDAY GARBAGE PICKUP

The City of DeWitt Garbage pickup for the week of December 24, 25, 31 and January 1 will be as follows: Tuesday pickup will be on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday pickup will be Thursday, and Friday pickup will be Friday.

DEWITT ERA-ENTERPRISE CLOSED

The DeWitt Era-Enterprise will be closed for the holidays. The office will be closed December 24 at noon. The office will then be closed December 25-December 30. The New Year’s paper will be delivered Monday, December 30 and the office will be open until noon that day. The office will then be close December 31-January 1. The staff will return January 2 and return to regular schedule.

LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT December 12, 2013 - An officer was dispatched to 522 E 2nd Street to speak with a woman concerning a break in. She told the officer that she was staying with her son on East Maxwell Street while she waited to get a gas line fixed at her residence located at 426 S Cedar Street. She said that she went to the residence on Monday, December 9 to feed her dog. She called for the dog and he never came. She could not find the dog, Spuds, in the house. Spuds is a small, black and white, male dog approximately two months old.

She also said that a brown electric heater was missing from the bathroom and there was a package of frozen chicken thighs, which she did not buy, left in the freezer. There did not appear to be an damage done to any doors or windows.

December 13, 2013 – An officer was dispatched to 12 Crescent Park Drive regarding a stolen gun. Upon arrival, the office spoke with the owner of the gun. He said on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 he noticed that the pistol he kept in the console of his pickup truck was missing. He said that he knows for sure the pistol was in the truck on Thanksgiving Day. The pistol, a Smith & Wesson .38 special was steel blue in color with brown wood grain grips was in a black holster when taken. Pistol entered into NCIC.

By Don Roth While all the draft eligible men were in the army, the property in Little Rock received less care and the town began to look shabby in places.

The Union Provost Marshall (military police chief) however had prisoners at work repairing and cleaning the streets at regular intervals. A local newspaper reported, “The indefatigable officer, among his numerous and onerous duties, is mindful of the city and is doing the people good service in that respect.

Other examples of enterprise abounded as the Union occupation entered its third month. A number of new businesses catering to the Federal soldiers in Little Rock were flourishing. Among them were a newsstand, two theaters, and two photo galleries.

The news stand supplied the general public with daily and weekly newspapers from Northern states, and a paper from Memphis.

The first picture taking gallery opened at a comfortable hotel, the Waco House. They specialized in photographs, and ambrotypes, while touting the claim they could re-

produce “all the life colors as they in nature.”

The Little Rock Theatre held performances every night. Armed sentinels were stationed at the entrance to maintain order.

On the night of December 16, one of them accidentally discharged his rifle, killing a member or the Tenth Illinois Cavalry.

The Variety Theater was attracting large audiences too. Many of the acts were novelty numbers, farces, and musicals. In January, a pantomime for children “Harlequin Tom the Piper’s Son,” was staged. Reporting on this theater, a local newspaper said, “The farces put on are well selected, spiritually played and favorably received. There is an unusual variety of songs, dancing, posturing and acting presented, so that everyone finds something to please him.”

On a lesser note, but indicative of business directed energy, apple vendors had stalls on each corner in some parts of the city.

The bustle even extended to rural folks who brought in the products of their farms, and buying goods.

Jennie Whiting

Helen Lorene Kerns Kennedy, age 82, was born August 19, 1931, beloved mother and grandmother left her earthly home Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Mrs. Kennedy was a resident of Pine Bluff, AR, at the time of her death. She lived in McGehee, AR, with her husband Arnold much of her adult life and later in DeWitt, AR. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Clifton Kennedy and eleven brothers and five sisters. She is survived by one sister Dimple Butcher Diviney of Nevada; five children, daughter Arlene Beatty and husband Kenneth “Bo” of Dermott, AR, son Carl Kennedy and wife Chris of Pine Bluff, AR, son Charlie Kennedy of DeWitt, AR, son Billy Kennedy of McGehee, AR, and daughter Tammy Johnson and husband Mike of Tillar, AR. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, a multitude of many more she adopted as her own grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 13, 2013 at Essex Funeral Home in DeWitt, AR. from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and also 12 -1 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 14, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Brian Standridge presiding at Essex Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the DeWitt Cemetery by Essex Funeral Home. Jennie B. (Tharp) Whiting was born February 22, 1915, widow of Shelby Preston Whiting, Jr. died December 14, 2013 at the age of 98.

She was also preceded in death by her infant son, Bobby Whiting; her parents, Ophelia Porter (Morgan) and Alvin Amos Tharp; her sisters, Dee Miller, Betty Lee Best, Hallie Krablin, and Hollis Krablin; her brothers, Jim and Henry Tharp; her sons-in-law, Robbie Davis and Jimmy Hackney; and her granddaughter, Joy Bowers.

Survivors include her son, Buddy (Pat) Whiting; her daughters, Shelby Jean (Rudy) Osborne, Margie (Zack) Roushall, Carolyn (Mike) Bell, Libby Davis and Sherry Hackney; her grandchildren, John (Dawn) Whiting, Mike Whiting, Russell Whiting, Tracy (Bryan) Russell, Dana and Buddy Roushall, Kelly Davis, Greg (Julie) Hackney, Chris (Casey) Hackney, and Josh (Stephanie) Hackney; her 21 great-grandchildren; her 7 great-greatgrandchildren; plus her numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

Through the years, Jennie would become known as Mrs. Jennie, Aunt Jennie and Me Maw. Before age crept upon her and affected her vision and hearing, she liked to read her Bible, hunt, fish, and quilt. She had a passion for writing religious songs and loved to play her guitar and sing those songs at the Nazarene Church in Nady. On several occasions, she was invited to play and sing at churches in Gillett and DeWitt. She was also know in the community for her fried pies.

Obituary Katherine Watkins Katherine Louise Watkins passed away on December 12, 2013, at age 83. She was born to John and Essie Eisenmenger of Indianapolis, IN, on April 27, 1930.

Katherine married Freddie Louis Watkins on December 29, 1947.

Katherine was a member of the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, John and Essie Eisenmenger, husband, Freddie Louis Watkins, one brother Dale Eisenmenger, one sister Emma Gueckenheimer, one daughter Phyllis Vinson, and one grandson William Vinson.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Donna (Bruce) Hopkins of Hot Springs, Clifford (Lori) Watkins of Pine Bluff, and Michael (Faith) Watkins of DeWitt; three brothers, Danny (Brenda) Eisenmenger of West Virginia, Johnny Eisenmenger and Willie Eisenmenger both of Indiana; three sisters, Wilma (Roger) Bunch and Frieda Milnes both of Indiana, and Becky Birge of Florida; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held December 14, 2013, at the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn with burial in Thompson Cemetery by Essex Funeral Home.

Obituary Jan Alter Jan Whitmore Alter, 65 of Little Rock passed away December 9, 2013. She was born in DeWitt, AR, September 26, 1948 in the clinic above Hampton Drug Company. Jan is preceded in death by her parents Charles & Thelma Whitmore and is survived by her two daughters, Shell Wilburn Cameron and her husband John Cameron of North Little Rock and Brie Alter & her husband Matthew Duvall of North Little Rock; her sister, Robin Maddox Dean and brother-in-law Gary Dean of North Little Rock; her brother, Kirk Whitmore and sister-inlaw Mary Nell Whitmore of St. Charles, AR; and many nieces & nephews.

Jan was a long time employee of DeWitt Bank & Trust and a life-time member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, growing things, and cross-stitching, but she LOVED Razorback Basketball, the White River Prairie, and all homeless animals.

The Gospel is a Trumpet of War No. 2

We continued on our sermon on the true Gospel, and how it has always caused a war between church natural and church spiritual. Church natural has only a head knowledge of God, while church spiritual has His spirit living in their heart. Rom. 839 says “--- if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of His.” What is the spirit of Christ? It is the Holy Ghost! This Holy Ghost wrote the Bible, and all who have this Holy Ghost will receive what He wrote in the word!

The spirit-word in a person does not fight the spiritword in the Bible. You may not understand it at first, but you will not testify against it. How often do we hear people say, “that scripture does not mean that.” But far too often you are judging what God said against something your church creed taught you. May I say to you that you have it reversed! You should judge what your church creed teaches against what God’s word says!

And because you are not doing that, you are found to be at war with the Gospel Trumpet. Born again people do not fight the Gospel Trumpet, they hold their peace and ask God for revelation on His word.

Having been raised around farm people and livestock, I have had some experience with mules. He is a crossbreed between a mare horse and a jack ass. He doesn’t know whether he is a horse or a donkey! He doesn’t know who his daddy is, and he can’t breed himself back, he is finished, he is sterile! He is hard headed and hard to train. He will wait all his life for a chance to kick or bite you.

Today we have mule religion in our churches. Some will sit in their church and say “amen” to all kinds of teaching that is against the Word, and when they happen to hear the true Gospel Trumpet, they will start a war with someone who dares to come against their church creed!

Once a farmer place a duck egg under a setting hen, along with her own eggs. The little duck hatched out with the chickens, but he never did learn to scratch in the manure piles with the chickens. But one day, he caught the smell of water from a distant creek, going to it he found out he was with others like himself, and was not a chicken after all! God offers us all the water of life freely. Its for mules and chickens also, if they want it.

Amen.

Recognizing the Babe in the Manger

By Pastor Steve Ellison At the time of the first Christmas faithful Jews were looking in anticipation for the promised Messiah, but I imagine most had grown weary and were totally wrapped up in their own lives. After all, it had been about four hundred years since they had heard from the Lord. When Jesus came as promised, even those who were faithfully anticipating the Messiah were likely to be looking in all the wrong places. I find no reason to be critical of them. I suspect that you and I would have been very much like them. It had been a very long time since God had spoken to them. They had been living under the domination of foreign totalitarian governments for several hundred years. These rulers were often cruel and demanding. If I am honest about my own heart, it seems to me that my search for the Promised One would have paled in light of my concerns of survival. Given my aversion to being told what to do, I suspect that if I had been looking at all, I would have been looking for a victorious warrior to run the Romans out of my country. After all, a part of Old Testament prophecy about the Messiah looked forward to the coming of Victorious King at the end of time. Regardless, I would have been exactly wrong, but it did not have to be that way.

After His crucifixion, Jesus walked along the Emmaus Road with a couple of disheartened and discouraged disciples who did not recognize Him. Luke 24:27 describes their conversation, “Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.”

NASU Very soon afterward, Jesus suddenly appeared to other disciples and said, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.”

Luke 24:44-45 NASU Scripture is living and active.

We can read and understand in a superficial way but real understanding requires the illumination of the Holy Spirit. With the aid of the Holy Spirit, our reading of the Old Testament makes it possible for us to recognize the Babe in the Manger.

Genesis 22:18 promises that the Messiah would be a descendant of Abraham. Matthew 1:1 tells us that Jesus fulfilled that prediction. Genesis 49:10 tells us that the Messiah would be from the tribe of Judah. Luke 3:33 and Revelation 5:5 tell us that Jesus meets that requirement. Daniel 9:24-25 predicts the time of the Messiah’s birth. Luke 2:1-2 confirms that Jesus was indeed born at that time. Micah 5:2 predicts the birthplace of the Messiah. Matthew 2:1 confirms that Jesus was indeed born in Bethlehem, the predicted place.

Isaiah 7:14 predicts that the Messiah would be born to a virgin and that His name would be Immanuel. Matthew 1:20-25 confirms that Jesus fulfilled both of those

Two Christmas Gifts We All Need

By Tom Smith If we have these, we really need nothing else.

“What ‘ya getting for Christmas?”

That’s a question we often ask or hear this time of the year. And, the answer varies according to who’s asking or answering it.

Sometimes we know exactly what we’re getting (maybe); other times we have to resort to the childish practice of shaking the package under the tree or trying to get the giver to accidentally tell us.

Likewise, our “wants” quite often exceed our “needs.”

And, again, whether or not we get those things depends upon who’s giving them, the cost, our relationship to them, etc.

I still remember the time in Manila when my family and I were up there for a meeting and had a free day to go shopping at Mega-Mall, the world’s fourthlargest mall. It was around a month before Christmas, so we decided to do some Christmas shopping while there.

When we arrived at the mall, I divided the spending money among the boys, told them to spend their money wisely and to meet us back at a designated rendezvous place at a set hour.

They then asked me, “What do you want for Christmas, Dad?” And, I made the mistake of replying, “Nothing.”

Dear Reader, don’t ever answer that way unless that’s really what you want—for, believe it or not, that’s exactly what I got that Christmas! And, as Jerry Clower would say, “If I’m lying, I’m dying!”

I couldn’t believe it when our youngest son started passing out the presents at Christmas and everyone’s pile started stacking up—everyone’s, that is, except mine! Soon all the packages were distributed and there was nothing in my stack. But, thankfully, my dear wife had had a computer cabinet handmade for me and had it in the next room.

Never again have I ever replied “Nothing” when someone asks me what I want for Christmas!

Did you realize there are two gifts every one of us needs this Christmas? What might those be?

Lots of money? A new car? Bigger house? Good health? prophecies. These are just a few examples of the dozens of Old Testament prophecies fulfilled by Christ. These and others help us to recognize the long awaited Messiah. The Jews living two thousand years ago needed a way to tell this baby from all the other babies. Unbelievers today need the same evidence that Jesus is indeed the promised Messiah, the Christ, the Redeemer, and the Savior of all who trust Him. Other people, far more competent and knowledgeable than I, have calculated the odds of any one person fulfilling all the Old Testament Messianic prophecies. Their conclusions have been unanimous: the odds are astronomical. It takes just a little faith to recognize the Babe in the Manger.

Well, those might be good; but, there are two other things we all need: Grace and Mercy.

Someone once defined Grace as “Getting what we don’t deserve,” while Mercy is “Not getting what we deserve.” Simple definitions, but oh how profound the implications!

Think of it: Grace is God’s Gift of Love to us that can’t be earned.

We can’t please or appease Him into giving it by good works or benevolent deeds; otherwise, it’d be a salary, not a gift.

Likewise, Mercy is that Love that tempers God’s Hand of justice. And, in reality, that’s why Jesus came to earth to pay the price for our sins so we could be forgiven. Thank God for the Christchild in the cradle Who later became the Christ-king on the Cross. Truly, it is His Blood that covers our sinfulness and saves us from God’s wrath (Romans 5:6-11).

Hallelujah!!

The story is told about the time a mother came to Napoleon to beg for the life of her son, who’d been sentenced to die. He was one of Napoleon’s soldiers and had twice broken one of the French emperor’s decrees.

After hearing the weeping mother’s plea, Napoleon told her that justice demanded his death.

She replied, “But, I’m not here seeking justice. I’m seeking mercy.”

“He doesn’t deserve mercy,” the emperor replied.

“Yes, I know,” she said. “That’s why it’s called Mercy.”

Upon hearing her response, Napoleon reflected upon her words and said, “You are right. Mercy is not deserved. And, I will therefore show Mercy to your son and set him free.”

Powerful story, isn’t it?

Here’s praying you’ve already received both of these God-given gifts. If not, this Christmas would be a wonderful time to ask Him for them. You’ll be so glad you did—for they certainly give life meaning and make it worth living. God bless you.

Bicentennial Time Capsule

A time capsule was buried in the Arkansas County Courthouse yard in DeWitt in recognition of the 200th Anniversary. Various items from the year were placed inside including newspapers, proclamation, a history book created for the event and much more.

The winner of the framed Arkansas County Seal, Tami Hornbeck, with Arkansas County Judge Glenn “Sonny” Cox.

Legend of the Great Seal of the County of Arkansas State of Arkansas By an Act of Congress in 1819, the territory of Arkansas was established and Arkansas Post became its first capital.

The lower half of the seal is quartered by a cross denoting the importance of church and religion in the development of this county.

Four flags have flown over this land. In the first quarter of the seal , the flag of Napoleonic France and the Louisiana Purchase is shown with perpendicular strips of blue, white and red (we recognize that during the period of 1684 to 1769, another style of French flag was flown: three gold fleur-de-lis on a blue background.)

The second quarter displays the Spanish flag, shown as a cross raguly, red with a white background, which flew from 1765 to 1800.

In the third quarter are the red, blue, and white stars and bars of the Confed-

eracy.

The fourth quarter signifies the red, white and blue of the United States of America.

The sheaf of rice in the upper half of the seal is surrounded by illustrations of the plow which broke the ground; the duck, the deer, and fish, which are found in abundance; and industry. Together, they complete the circle and symbolize the lifestyle of this great county.

The motto Deo Volente Prospero is translated to, “By the favor of God, I shall prosper,” and so shall Arkansas County prosper.

Civil War cannon was brought in from the Arkansas Post National Memorial for the Arkansas County Bicentennial Events. Men were dressed in time-period clothing for the Civil War.

The seventh grade social studies classes recently completed a study of Ancient Egypt. Following the study they chose a project to do that depicted something found or used in Ancient Egypt. Several pyramids were built, many shadoofs were constructed, and King Tut masks were recreated along with several other interesting projects.

Leisure Club Celebrates the Christmas Season The Leisure Club met at the Triple P Restaurant under the Pendleton Bridge for its Christmas meal at noon on Tuesday, December 10, with 28 present.

Pastor Jan Edwards of the Gillett United Methodist Church asked the blessing, and everyone then enjoyed the delicious meal and dessert served by Triple P. They also enjoyed visiting before, during, and after the meal. Dorothy Connelly, coordinator, and Brenda Nichols called numbers for several games of Bingo to see who won the door prizes. Winners included Thelma Connelly, Henrietta Gordon, Margie Hackney, Billie Jean Hickman, Mary Ann Mattmiller, Tony Place, Virginia Place, Tiffany Sherbert, Norma Jean VanHorn, Becki Weinrich, and Nola Weinrich. The last Bingo game was a spirited fill-your-card game with Freda Ross the lucky winner.

The January meeting will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14 in the Adult Sunday School room of the Gillett United Methodist Church.

Christmas Recital Planned Darla Grantham and her piano students will host a Christmas Recital on Friday, December 20th, 2013.

Duderstadt Finishes Third at Auburn Invitational

Michael Duderstadt finished third at Auburn Invitational Meet.

Michael Duderstadt, son of Bruce Duderstadt (formerly of Gillett) and Kim Duderstadt, and grandson of Hubert and Alberta Duderstadt (Gillett), has gotten off to a good start as a freshman on the Auburn University Swim Team.

At the Auburn Invitational Meet (22-24 November 2013), Duderstadt cut off over five seconds from his previous best time of 2013 and finished third with a 1:56.20 swim in the 200 breast stroke. This time ranks as the fifth best mark in Auburn history according to a report on the Auburn Swim and Dive website, which also tweeted that this time was sixth in the country for the NCAA 2013-2014 season.

His former coach on the Panama City Swim Team (PCST), Jonathan Kaplan, reported that Duderstadt won the 100 Breaststroke “against a star-studded field with an astounding 53.20. Not only will that likely put the former PCST star in NCAAs, but it is a new Southeastern swimming record and now ranks as the 5th fastest swim in USA history for 17-18 boys.” The Auburn Swim and Dive website tweeted that 53.20 was the seventh best time in school history and the top time in the country for the NCAA 2013-2014 season.

Duderstadt qualified (“A Cut”) for the NCAA tournament to be held in March in the 200 and 400 Medley Relays. He has a “B Cut” for the 200 IM, 100 Breaststroke, and 200 Breaststroke. If not enough swimmers make an “A Cut,” they will start going into the swimmers who have a “B Cut” to determine who will qualify for this tournament.

The members exchanged Christmas cards and visited with rdirection of Larry McCallie, song leader, accompanied by pianist, Neva West. The pastor of the church, Bro. Charles Floyd Jackson’s sermon from the book of Luke regarding the birth of of our Savior, Jesus Christ, which everyone enjoy. Afterwards, everyone was invited to go to the kitchen for a very good potluck dinner. Also, Bro. Charles’ greatgranddaughter, Emily Grace, celebrated her 12th birthday with a large chocolate birthday cake and lots of presents. Members of the Church attending were: Bro. Charles Floyd Jackson and his wife, Shirley; Larry and Connie McCallie, Neva West, Spencer and Sevella Parker, Lorene Harris, Jean Davenport, Carl and Linda Fuches, Charles and Linda Starks, Billy Ray Starks and Mrs. Hallie Keithley. Hailey and Sarah are the daughters of Christy Golleher of DeWitt. They are also the great-granddaughters of Bro. Charles and Shirley Jackson of DeWitt. I am very proud of you girls.

Congratulations are in order to Andrea and Tony Harris of Little Rock on the birth of your daughter, Lundyn McKenna. She arrived at St. Vincent Hospital in Little Rock on November 26th 2013, at 10:50 p.m. She weighed 7 lbs. 11 ozs. and was 19-1/2 inches long. The proud Grandparents are Sandra Stephens of Fordyce, and Windell Stephens of Ward, AR. Her Great-grandparents are Mary Helen (Eason) Gray, and the late Bill Gray of DeWitt.

their son, Carson Lane Ross, who was born at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock, on December 7, 2013.

Nativity Scene for DeWitt Memorial Lane

With the private donations from individuals of the community, a nativity scene has been purchased for the DeWitt Court Square. Believing the nativity scene should be the beginning of all Christmas displays by the DeWitt Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Prayer Breakfast, the project grew to include the individual donations and from the first memorial donations received by the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce for DeWitt Memorial Lane.

When approached for a possible location, Christina Boyd and Tee Buie of Boyd and Buie Attorneys at Law offered their beautiful courtyard on the south entrance to the DeWitt Square,

thus beginning the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce Memorial Lane. Individuals may still make memorial donations to the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce Memorial Lane Christmas lighting in memory of loved ones as part of the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce Christmas Lighting Spectacular. This will assist the Chamber of Commerce to purchase commercial grade lighting for future expansion of the Christmas displays. Memorial acknowledgment signs will be placed  within Memorial Lane for donations of $250 or more. All donors at all levels will be acknowledged by the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce at the beginning of each holiday

71 Annual Coon Supper December School Board Meeting

The Gillett Farmers and Businessmenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club will host the 71st Annual Coon Supper on Saturday, January 11, 2014.

As in past years, the Coon Supper will be held in the Gillett Elementary Gymnasium. The doors will open and the meal served at 6pm with the program beginning at 6:30pm. Please note that we will be starting early again this year.

Our menu will stay the same as last year, coon, baby-back ribs, brisket, rice, and sweet potatoes.

The Gillett Farmers and Businessmenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club is a non-profit and non-political club that has grown into an outstanding asset for the community of Gillett. The club helps with efforts such as summer programs, school programs, an educational endowment fund, athletic and scholastic awards, and community service. For the past four years the club has awarded the Gillett Farmers and Businessmenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Scholarship to two graduating seniors from the Gillett area. Each student received a $750 a year scholarship that is renewable for

four years. The club continues to use all proceeds from the Coon Supper to fund these scholarships and we will award two more scholarships to seniors graduating in 2014. These scholarships demonstrate the commitment that the Gillett Farmers and Businessmenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club has for the students in our area.

The Gillett Coon Supper is the first and one of the largest events of its type held at the beginning of each New Year.

The event will be attended by many national, state and local politicians, and people from all over Arkansas and surrounding states. There will be recognition of the DeWitt High School Seniors from Gillett. Coon Supper T-shirts and hats will be available this year.

By Kevin Brown The December school board meeting took place at the Middle School library last Wednesday. Snacks and beverages were served and a variety of topics were discussed.

The minutes of last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meeting were approved, as were the November financial reports. Under the Administrative Reports, the board voted unanimously to move the Graduation Date to May 16, 2014 at the football field due to conflicting athletic events that may possibly disrupt the ceremony.

A vote to move the January Board meeting to January 13, 2014 at 7:00 pm was passed, as scheduled basketball

games conflict with the 14th meeting date.

The technology report was addressed which included the tests of bandwidth, switch upgrades, and the wireless network so that the implementation of new technology may be incorporated in the school systems. Also proposed was that every district have a hub, though running fiber is an expensive endeavor. Other topics included the continual upgrade of computer lab desktops, software and hardware and the management of area networks.

The second reading of Policy 3.0 revision was discussed as well as The Point insurance policy. Both were approved with unanimous votes.

Janie Thompson of DeWitt has been chosen as the recipient of the J.C. Carter Memorial Scholarship at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA) in DeWitt.

Thompson is majoring in business.

The J.C. Carter Memorial Scholarship was established by the J.C. Carter family to assist students on the DeWitt campus and pays $500 per semester.

Students must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA to receive and to maintain the scholarship.

Growing up, candy making at our house during the holidays always consisted of divinity, fudge, peanut brittle, and, of course, pralines. We spent days making candy to give away.

Candy making is relatively easy, but there are some tricks of the trade to remember.

A good quality accurate candy thermometer in good working condition is essential. The thermometer is used to test the temperature during cooking of candy, jams and jellies. It has an adjustable clip so that it can rest against the sides of a heavy-gauge saucepan.

To test the accuracy of your candy thermometer, place the bulb in a pan of rapidly boiling water. Be careful not to let the bulb touch the bottom of the pan. Read the temperature at eye level while the thermometer is in the water.

It should read 212 degrees F, while the water is boiling.

If the thermometer does not measure boiling temperature correctly, remember to adjust the candy temperature during cooking to reflect the difference, or purchase a new one.

Choose a dry (not humid) day for making candy. Weather can be a factor in candy making. If you choose to make it on a rainy day, you may need to cook candy a degree or two higher than stated in the recipe.

A heavy saucepan to prevent scorching or burning that is the correct size to prevent candy from boiling over is essential. You don’t have to purchase anything just for candy making; just make sure it is heavy and the right size.

When making fudge, it must be cooked to a full boil until the mixture reaches 242 degrees F. If you fail to do this, the result may be soft, sticky fudge.

Use only the best and freshest ingredients. If your recipe calls for butter, you can use either salted or unsalted. Margarines or butter spreads may not always be a good substitute because they do not create the correct texture in the final candy, because of the emulsifiers and other ingredients added to their formulas. Butter also gives candy that rich, creamy taste and texture we associate with candy.

Once you have made your candy, storage is the next key to a great treat. For most candy, the only thing that needs

to be done to store it is to wrap it for longer storage. Individually wrap candies in waxed paper or plastic food wrap. Store individually wrapped candies in boxes, tins or cartons with tightfitting lids.

If you make small hard candies, sprinkle them with finely ground sugar (not powdered) and store in a jar with a tight fitting lid.

Do not mix candies that absorb moisture (caramels, mints, hard candies, toffee) in the same container as candies that lose moisture (fudge, fondant, meringues). If these types of candies are mixed, the hard candies will become sticky. For your fudge, it is best to use wax paper to individually wrap or separate layers in your storage container.

If you happened to make more than you can eat or give away at the holidays, package them, wrapped tightly in plastic food wrap or aluminum foil, label, date, and freeze. To serve, thaw wrapped candy at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours.

Candy making is a family tradition for many. Now that you know some of the tricks to making great, quality candy, why not make it a tradition at your house.

by Kevin Brown The December Quorum Court met last Tuesday to discuss a number of issues and vote on several ordinances, including: Ordinance No. 2013-20 abolishing the Deputy Court Clerk Part-time Position in the Southern District Court; Ordinance No. 2013-21 amending appropriation Ordinance 2013-48 establishing a county road budget; Ordinance 201324 amending the General Fund Budget/Sheriff Budget/Merrisach Funds/Contract Labor; Ordinances establishing the 2014 General, Individual and Special Individual Fund Budgets.

All ordinances passed.

The DeWitt and Stuttgart courthouses, as well as the Arkansas County Road Department will close for Christmas beginning December 23rd at noon through the 25th.

The courthouse will be open on December 31st for End of Year Business and closed in observation of New Year’s Day, January 1, 2014.

by Kevin Brown The Dragons and Dragonettes had some big wins last week. The Jr. Dragons started off with a narrow home victory over Stuttgart 37-34.

Landon Turner led the way with 12 points while John Wright added another 9. They followed that win with another “W” over Rison 42-13, with Landon Turner going off for 16 points and Jamari Gamble hitting 10. The Junior Boys go into the Christmas break with a record of 7-1.

The Sr. Dragons toppled Rison 67-34 in a big home victory. Leartis Williams was the leading scorer with 17 points with Tyren Robinson

adding 16, A.J. Bell 11 and Jeremy Smith hitting 9 in the effort.

The Dragonettes welcomed Rison on Friday and defeated them by a score of 55-42. “It was a great team effort,” Coach Peeks said. “Our fullcourt pressure defense gave them problems throughout the game.”

Ragan Snyder was the high scorer with 15 points and Dabratia Clark dropped 11. Peeks added: “I couldn’t have been more pleased with the execution on offense and aggressiveness on defense.”
