Five Things to Know About Signing Up for Health Care Coverage for 2015 By Bob Moos/Southwest public affairs officer for the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services If you don’t have health insurance through your job or a government program like Medicare or Medicaid, you’ll want to read on. You have until Feb. 15 to shop for health care coverage for 2015 through the federal health insurance marketplace or your state’s exchange. The marketplace’s open enrollment period got off to a strong start in mid-November, with tens of thousands of people now signing up every day. Here are five things to know about it: This is comprehensive health insurance, with benefits similar to what many employers offer their workers. Insurance protects you from unexpected medical expenses. With it, you’ll have peace of mind. Without it, you’d bear the full brunt of any bills. Fixing a broken leg can cost you up to $7,500. A three-day stay in the hospital runs, on average, $30,000. The health plans sold through the marketplace cover a broad range of medical services, including emergency care, hospital stays, doctor visits and prescription drugs. Insurers can’t deny you coverage, or charge you higher premiums, because you have a pre-existing medical condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure. The price you pay for insurance is based only on where you live, how old you are and whether you smoke. Even if you signed up during the marketplace’s first enrollment period a year ago, you’ll want to update your personal information and shop around again to make sure

you get the best deal. It’s true that you’ll be automatically re-enrolled in your current health plan if you do nothing. But you could end up cheating yourself. The plan that was your best choice for 2014 may not be for 2015. It may be changing its benefits, its cost sharing or its network of hospitals and doctors. You also may have more choices. Nationally, there are 25 percent more health plans than last year. The increased competition among insurers is reining in prices in many cases. If you don’t compare all your options for 2015, you could miss out on a plan that would save you money. It’s also important to review your application from last year and update any personal information that’s changed. If you’ve had a drop in income, for example, that could boost any financial help you’re receiving for your premiums or outof-pocket costs. Look beyond the monthly premiums in comparing health plans. Some plans have lower premiums but charge you more out-of-pocket when you require care. Other plans charge higher premiums but cover more of your medical expenses. You’ll need to decide how you want to balance your premium costs with your out-of-pocket costs. The easiest way to compare health plans available in your area, along with their estimated cost, is to use healthcare.gov’s new “windowshopping” feature. Even before completing an application, you can browse plans by entering your ZIP

code, household income and family size. Check whether you qualify for financial assistance. About 85 percent of the people who enrolled in a marketplace plan a year ago received tax credits that made their premiums more affordable. Nearly seven in 10 consumers who qualified for help paid $100 or less per month for their coverage. Almost half got covered for $50 or less per month. If you’re new to the marketplace this year, you can find out whether you’re eligible for a tax credit by visiting healthcare.gov and creating an application with your most up-to-date income information. This year’s application has been shortened and simplified for most people. Ask for help in enrolling if you need it. The healthcare.gov website is running much more smoothly this year. But if you’re not computersavvy, don’t fret. Call the marketplace assistance center at 1-800318-2596 and speak with a trained counselor. Local organizations are also available to help. For a list of groups in your community that can provide in-person assistance, visit localhelp.healthcare.gov/ The deadline for enrolling in a health plan is Feb. 15. Coverage begins on Jan. 1 for those who sign up by Dec. 15. Don’t delay. Once this open enrollment period is over, your next chance to buy insurance and apply for help may not come for another year.

FAITH & RELIGION WEEKLY SERMON

An Appointment All Men Will Keep By William Wood In our life here on earth we set up a lot of appointments, and some of them we keep, and some we don’t. But there is one appointment that God has set for us all, and that one we will all keep. Let me quote it for you. Romans 14: 11-12 “For it is written, as I live saith The Lord, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.” Every time we see a grey hair it is a sign that our appointment with God is drawing closer. Every time we hear the siren off an emergency vehicle we realize that someone may be about to leave to keep this appointment. When we see a hospital, it is a sign that people die in there and go to their appointment. When we go to a funeral and look at the one in the casket it is a sign that if the Lord tarries, we will lay in a casket also. When we pass by a grave yard it is a sign that we were not put here to stay, and that the graves hold the clay bodies of those who have gone to keep their appointment with God. This appointment is called The Great White Throne Judgement in the Bible. The presidents will be there, the vice-presidents will be there. The senators will be there, and the congressmen. The rich man and the poor man will be there. The young and the old will be there. The widows and atheist will be there, all standing shoulder to shoulder, waiting to give an account of the life we lived here on earth. God Himself will be asking the questions, and we will be required to answer. I want to lift some of the things He will not ask us. He won’t ask what denomination we belonged to. He won’t ask how much money we were able to take in our lifetime, nor how much education we had, college degrees will mean nothing there. He will not ask how high we were able to climb up the social pole in our town, nor how high an office we held in government! He is not even going to ask us if we understood all the Bible! But here is the question we will be asked! He will look at us as an individual and ask if we Believed all of His Word? We could way it another way, He will ask, “What did you do with my word that I had recorded and left it in the Bible for you to live by? All untruths that may be given to His question will have His light shine on it, and no lie can stand up in that light! Friends, the most important thing that we could ever do is to be prepared to answer His question with this, “Lord, I tried my best to walk in all the light you gave me out of your Word, and I repented when I failed! Then He will say, “Well done, enter in.”!! Amen

A Thought By Michael P. Daniel “[The Lord] humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know; that [The Lord] might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone, but shall live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of The Lord.” Deuteronomy 8:3 NKJV It almost never fails that when bad things happen, or when things simply do not go the way we want or expect, we think “the devil is out to get me”. It rarely seems to occur to us that sometimes stuff happens that we have no control over, and it may even be safe to say we never think maybe The Lord is trying to get our attention. Our contemporary theology has become so cheap and easy that we all but demand prosperity (on our terms); and when it does not come about as we desire, it must be the devil’s fault. Worse than this, however, is how we have allowed cheap grace to become so much a part of our theology that others who do not know The Lord become convinced that a) there is no God, or b) the devil has more sway over us and our lives (when we give the evil one any credit whatsoever). Either way, the sovereignty of The Lord is challenged with each careless word. So we must back up a bit and see that even The Lord’s “most cherished possession” (Israel) had to be “humbled” not so The Lord could get His jollies, but so that Israel will come to know that we “shall not live by bread alone” (that is, the world’s goods). The world’s possessions will never give us what we need most. In fact it can be easily said that the more of the world’s goods we have, the more we desire. “Enough” is not in our vocabulary. Especially during this time of year as we busy ourselves with so much holiday prepping and shopping, even as we try to claim that “Jesus is the reason for the season”, the reality is that Jesus is an afterthought – and the world can see that through careless Christians. If Jesus can so easily be put in the “back seat”, so can “every word that proceeds from the mouth of The Lord” – for Jesus is “the Word which became flesh and dwelt among us”. Instead of resolving to make this the “best Christmas ever”, resolve instead to give real meaning to this Holy Day we should more busily prepare in our hearts to commemorate. That glorious day when the lowliest of them all, the ones who had nothing to give, the shepherds, were the very first to be made aware that the Messiah had come, that the Promise had been fulfilled. Let us embrace the “Word made flesh” as if our lives depend on it – because our well-being does indeed depend on how eagerly we embrace The Word. Blessings, Michael

The Elephant and the Emperor By Tom Smith Sometimes you have to just bite the bullet and deal with the obvious. But you have to do so in love, realizing it’ll be painful—both for you and the one with whom you’re dealing; yet, such is necessary if there’s to ever be a change. The other morning I awoke from a dead sleep with those thoughts on my mind and couldn’t go back to sleep. It was like God was saying “Get up and write.” I laid there a few minutes, mulling over them, thinking about catching another hour or so of rest (since it was 2:15 a.m.), but that “still, small Voice” kept saying “Get up and write.” So I did. And, here’s what He had to say: “There’s an elephant in the room” and “The emperor has no clothes.” I’ve heard those two adages down through the years, but never knew where they came from. I knew that both of them are expressive adages that paint poignant pictures of the obvious—but no one’s wanting to deal with them. Although some trace the elephant simile back to a story Mark Twain wrote in 1882 or the 1935 Broadway musical, “Jumbo,” starring Jimmy Durante, no one really knows where it originated. As for the emperor metaphor, it originated in an 1837 Danish fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote about an emperor who loved fine clothes. In fact, he spent the majority of the people’s money on the most expensive clothes money could buy. And, he had a new set of clothes for every hour. But, one day two swindlers came into town, claiming to be seamstresses and saying they could weave the finest, lightest clothes money could buy. And, the material was so fine that it was invisible to those who were ignorant or stupid. Enthralled by their claims, the emperor paid them great sums of money to make him royal clothes. He sent advisors to examine their progress and they were too afraid or ashamed to let him know it was a hoax. So, the day came when the clothes were finished and the emperor called for a town gathering so he could show off his fine clothes. As he paraded through the

streets, stark naked, no one dared saying a thing— until a young boy, in childhood innocence, cried out “But, the emperor has no clothes.” And, the “obvious,” which had been ignored because it was too dangerous, controversial, emotionallycharged, divisive, etc., was brought to light. Only then could it be dealt with. Such is so often the case in our lives, dear Reader. We have a relative or friend who has an addiction with drink or drugs, but nobody wants to deal with it—partly because it’s too painful and partly because of the often violent response it produces. The same is true with social issues like racism, abortion, homosexuality, etc. We ignore them because they’re so divisive or nowadays “politically incorrect;” or, we quietly go along with them lest we be seen as a rabble-rousing, phobic troublemaker. And, then we wonder why things never change. That’s why it takes courage to speak out when “there’s an elephant in the room” and “the emperor has no clothes.” Someone has to point out the obvious and be willing to accept the backlash for doing so—for, as someone once said, “If the people don’t like the prophet’s message, they’ll simply kill the prophet.” So true, so true. But, maybe, just maybe, doing so will awaken others to the Truth and they, like the townspeople in the fairy tale, will get onboard and risk saying/doing the same. Even if they don’t, at least you’ll know in your heart that you’ve done what’s right and have no regrets when your sojourn here on earth is through. So, what elephants and emperors are you dealing with in your life right now? Isn’t it about time to deal with the obvious and do what’s necessary to begin the process of change? It won’t be easy and it definitely won’t be painless. But, someone has to start somewhere and there’s no better time than now. (NOTE: If you’d like to contact Bro. Pesticide Applicator Training Scheduled for December 16

Digital Photography Contest

By Chuck Capps, County Extension Agent – Staff Chair With the 2014 crop year behind us, it is time to start making plans for winter meetings and the 2015 growing season. Pesticide Applicator Training – Tuesday, December 16 The Arkansas County Extension Service will hold three Pesticide Applicator Training meetings this winter, with different dates, locations and times so you may be able to attend the training of your choice. The first training will be held Tuesday, December 16 at the Rice Research & Extension Center starting at 1:00 p.m. Additional training dates are: January 28, 1:00 p.m., at Phillips Community College, DeWitt; February 10, 6:30 p.m. at the Rice Research & Extension Center; and February 25, 1:00 p.m. at Phillips Community College, DeWitt. The trainings will be for those needing re-certification as well as for those applying for a new license in order to purchase restricted use pesticides. Producers who need re-certification should receive a letter from the State Plant Board informing them of the requirement for re-certification before a 2014 license can be issued. Because of funding reductions by the EPA for the pesticide applicator training program, the Cooperative Extension Service must charge private applicators for

certification training. The fee is $10 per person, payable at the door the day of the training. This certification registration fee is in addition to the price you pay the Arkansas State Plant Board for your license. Please remember that in most cases you will need the training only once every 5 years. Please make your checks payable to: UA, Cooperative Extension Service, Arkansas County County Crop Production Meeting The Annual Arkansas County Crop Production Meeting will be held on Thursday, February 5, at the Rice Research & Extension Center, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The program will conclude with a catfish lunch at noon. Additional program details will be provided prior to the meeting. These meetings are open to all eligible persons without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status. Persons with disabilities who require alternative means for communication of program information (large print, audiotapes, etc.) should notify the county Extension office as soon as possible prior to the activity. For additional information, please call our office at 870946-3231 or 870-673-2346.

The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting unites family and friends around the globe in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren who left too soon. As candles are lit at 7:00 p.m. local time, hundreds of thousands of persons commemorate and honor the memory of all children gone too soon. Now believed to be the largest mass candle lighting on the globe, the 18th annual Worldwide Candle Lighting, a gift to the bereavement community from The Compassionate Friends, creates a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone. The Compassionate Friends’ World Wide Candle Lighting started in the United States in 1997 as a small internet observance, but has since swelled in numbers as word has spread throughout the world of the remembrance. Hundreds of formal candle lighting events are held and thousands of informal candle lightings are conducted in homes as families gather in quiet remembrance of children who have died, but will never be forgotten. This year will be the Desha County Compassionate Friends’ 17th year to

hold a World-wide Candle lighting Remembrance. Everyone is invited to join us on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the Dumas Community Center, 18 Belmont Drive, Dumas at 6 p.m. for a short program and candle light remembrance ceremony in which candles will be lighted at 7 p.m. in memory of all children. A reception will follow the candle lighting. There is no admission Desha County Compassionate Friends is a national nonprofit, self-help support organization that offers friendship, understanding, and hope to bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings grieving the death of a child of any age, from any cause. There is no membership fee. However, anyone who wishes to give a donation in memory of a child may do so. Checks may be made payable to Desha County Compassionate Friends and mailed to Desha County Compassionate Friends, P. O. Box 482, Dumas, AR 71639. HOT SPRINGS — Randy Veach and Rich Hillman will continue as president and vice president, respectively, of Arkansas Farm Bureau following their re-election Friday. Delegates also re-elected five board members and two new board members during the final day of the organization’s 80th annual convention at the Hot Springs Convention Center. Veach, 64, of Manila (Mississippi Co.) begins a seventh term as president. He is Arkansas Farm Bureau’s 10th president since its creation in 1935. Veach farms cotton, soybeans, rice, wheat, corn and milo in and around the community of Lost Cane near Manila. He is a thirdgeneration farmer and he and his wife, Thelma, farm with their son Brandon. “I’m humbled to continue to serve this great organization and the hardworking farmers and ranchers who are the backbone of this state’s economy,” Veach said. “I’m deeply committed to agriculture and understand the great responsibility we have to advocating and strengthening the interests of agriculture. Thank you so much.” Hillman, 51, hails from Carlisle (Lonoke Co.) and will begin his sixth term as vice president. He is a sixth-generation farmer. His main crops are rice, soybeans and wheat. He and his wife Tina have two grown children, Collin and Caroline. “I’m blessed to be able to represent and advocate for the family farms that make this state great,” Hillman said. The voting delegates re-elected five board members to new two-year terms. They include: Joe Christian, Jonesboro (Craighead Co.); Terry Dabbs, Stuttgart (Arkansas

Co.); Tom Jones, Pottsville (Pope Co.); Rusty Smith, Des Arc, (Prairie Co.); and Leo Sutterfield, Mountain View (Stone Co.). The new board members are Caleb Plyler of Hope (Hempstead Co.) and Dan Wright of Waldron (Scott Co.). Plyler, 34, is a rancher with more than 300 Charolais cattle and hay on his 1,362 acres. DeWitt Campus Student of the Month for September Elizabeth “Lizzy” West has been named Student of the Month, for December, representing the DeWitt Campus Student Ambassadors. She earned a two year degree in Graphic Communications from PCCUA, and she is currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program at the University of Arkansas, Fort Smith. This program is largely online, so Lizzy is able to continue to be active with the Student Ambassadors on the DeWitt Campus. She currently is living at home with her parents and her two dogs. “I have loved PCCUA. I’ve grown to know and love all the faculty and staff. The DeWitt Campus of PCCUA was sort of my second home,” stated Lizzy. “When I enrolled in college, I had to overcome the fear of failing, and I was frightened that I couldn’t do it.” Being a Student Ambassador has been a wonderful experience for Lizzy. According to her, “Being an ambassador has helped me get involved and to become a great volunteer.

God’s Missionary Heart By Pastor Steve Ellison Christmas is the story of the world’s greatest mission trip. This mission trip accomplished more and cost more than all the world’s other religious mission trips combined. Genesis 3 records the reason for this mission trip. It was a response to the most terrible and dastardly rebellion the world has ever seen. Created beings conspired against their good and benevolent Creator. The two highest forms of created beings decided to defy and deceive the Omnipotent Ruler of the Universe. Satan, an angelic being, and the first two humans plunged all of the created order into a state of chaotic and cursed existence. Immediately, the magnificent Creator, in a display of divine goodness declared

that He would send His divine missionary disguised as the Seed of Woman. This missionary would surely crush the head of Satan, but that is simply the necessary deed to bring about God’s ultimate purpose. God could have punished and destroyed Satan, the leader of the rebellion, in swift and innumerable means at no cost to Himself. However, God chose a far different method. At great personal cost, He sent His Son as a missionary to woo the rebellious humans back to Himself and in the meantime to also destroy the leader of the rebellion. Certainly Satan understood the fate God had marked out for him, but he did not know the method or the per-

COMMUNITY NEWS son who would carry it out. For hundreds of years, Satan had no other information. Genesis 12:1-3 would give Satan’s next clue in where to look for his destruction, Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from our father’s house, To the land which I will show you; And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” (NASU) God let it be known that He would destroy Satan and reconcile the world to Himself through one who would be a descendant of Abraham. The Seed of the Woman introduced in Genesis 3 would come from the nation founded by Abraham. God promised Abraham that his family would grow into a nation and would bless every person in the whole world. God also indicated that rejecting the blessing that would come from Abraham’s descendants would result in forfeiting the blessing. Genesis 12:3 closes with a marvelous promise, “in you all

the families of the earth will be blessed.” Because of God’s missionary heart, He sent His Son as a missionary to the whole world so that whoever believed in Him would be forgiven for their part in the rebellion and reconciled to God (John 3:16). Romans 10:9-13 gives the plainest Christmas message, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for “whoever will call on the name of the lord will be saved.” (NASU) The offer of forgiveness and reconciliation is the blessing for the whole world described in Genesis 12. Experiencing the blessing is contingent only on freely receiving it by an act of your will. Do it today. pastorsteve8800@gmail.com

The Knock on the Door

By Michaek Waldroup Matthew 26:39, “And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” The above verse is part of our Lord’s prayer to evade the cruel Cross of Calvary. Luke 22:44 tells us, in the agony of His prayer, that His sweat became as great drops of blood. There in The Garden of Gethsemane, God and man were becoming one in will. Philippians 2:8, “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Our Lord knew, by The Old Testament scrolls, what lay ahead of Him. He knew His flesh would be ripped away so that His bones would be exposed. He knew His joints would be out of socket while hanging on the cross, and that He would be beat beyond recognition. He knew the birds that lit on the crosses of execution of that day to pluck at the eyes and ears of those that hung on them, would be there. He knew He would be hanging there naked to be shamed before them all. Why wouldn’t He want this bitter cup to pass, as any human would that had this sentence of death passed on them? Our Lord knew what lay ahead of Him, we do not. At any time, a knock at the door may bring heartbreaking news. As Christians, we must have these un-

foreseen calamities already settled between us and God in the secret places of our will, where no stranger intermeddles, just us and God. There, and only there, can you become one with God in will. If you lose the battle there, the knock at the door will only bring despair and you will end up questioning God or even becoming angry and accusing of God. This is a dangerous place to be. Our battles are not won because we try to win them in the external world first. If we wait till the calamity comes and then look for God, it shows we have misplaced Him to begin with. I Peter 4:12, “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: I Thessalonians 5:18, “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. One might ask the question, “What does ‘this’ mean in this verse?” It means that whatever the “knock on the door” brings, we should accept it as God’s will for us. If it is good news, we will accept it with a smile on our face, if it is heartbreaking news, with tears we will thank Him with an inner peace and calm, for the matter has already been settled between us and God. Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
