LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT November 23, 2014 – Officer Jody Chapman was dispatched to the intersection of Cross and Cedar Streets for the suspect, Tarrance Harris “acting crazy.” Upon arrival Chapmen spoke with Harris’ mother, Lasonya Harris. She advised that the suspect had struck a vehicle with a garden hoe. Harris advised that the suspect was on medication and has “problems”. While speaking with Harris, Chapman observed the suspect walking toward his vehicle while carrying a garden hoe. The suspect stopped approximately 20 feet from the officer’s vehicle. When Chapman opened the door, the suspect placed the garden hoe on the ground and started to approach the officer.

Chapman then asked the suspect what was going on and the suspect advised that the victim (whom the suspect stated he did not know) drove by and “looked like he had a problem” with the suspect, so the suspect struck the victim’s car window with the garden hoe. The suspect advised he did hit the car and that he wanted to go to jail because he needs help.

The suspect was taken into custody with no incident and transported to the Arkansas County Detention Center where he was charged with Criminal Mischief in the 2nd degree (5-38-204) with citation #013400.

The victim was not at the scene upon Chapman’s arrival. Ms. Harris advised that the victim was her sister’s son. At the time of this report, the victim has not come forward.

Quorum Court Starts Planning County Budget for 2015

By Terrye Seamon It is that time of year again - when coffers are opened and contents are examined so budgets for the new upcoming year can be planned. Not only did the Arkansas County Quorum Court hold the first wave of budget meetings for 2015, but a majority of the monthly meeting also focused on financial issues concerning revenue.

Arkansas County Treasurer Charles Horton presented an overview of the budget projections for 2015. When comparing 2014 projections to the projections for 2015, Horton said the figures were close. “The bottom line is, in my opinion, we are within $5000,” Horton said. For 2015, the total projected budget for the county is set at $3,701,525.55.

When Arkansas County Judge Glen “Sonny” Cox introduced the 2015 budget spreadsheet to the Court, he commended elected officials for keeping their budgets low. “We are not getting an increase this year from the General Fund as our treasurer testified to [earlier in the meeting]. I think we are doing a good job holding all these budgets down,” Cox said.

In addition to the 2015 projections, Horton also presented the financial report for October and noted that the county has $155,753 more than they had this time last year.

In other financial matters, Court members unanimously passed two ordinances levying a 2014 millage rate for real estate and personal property.

The Court also passed unanimously another appropriation ordinance amending the Juvenile Detention Center budget in the amount of $31,167 due to the GIA grant which the county annually receives. They also passed an ordinance amending and re-appropriating $1000 within the General Fund.

At the end of the meeting, Cox addressed some concerns and issues that have come up since the October meeting over plans for rebuilding the Stuttgart Courthouse Annex. He gave the Court an update on those plans in order to clear up any misunderstandings.

“I had no ulterior motives whatsoever regardless of what’s being said,” Cox told the Court.

When the fire occurred September 23, Cox said his goal was to get things up and running as quickly as possible. “Our main goal is to take care of the people of this county so they can assess, pay taxes, pay their sanitation bill, have 911 and the services they deserve.”

Cox told Court members they should soon be receiving some floor plans to consider before the next meeting December 10, and the architect will be present at that meeting to answer any questions. He has been asked to draw up plans for a one-story building as well as a two-story building so issues such as parking can be taken into consideration.

Cox clarified that he wanted to get the ball rolling because he knows how long it takes to draw up a set of plans. “I had no intention to dictate what offices were where and who did what.” He also said he had no intentions of using county equipment to dig up the foundation and start building a two story building.

Cox told the Court they will give the final decision and approval of the building. He was just trying to get them some information to work with when he talked with the architect. Cox told the Court, “My job is to keep the Quorum Court informed so you can make good decisions.”

As far as insurance goes, the county is well insured for this type of disaster with 1.5 million dollars to cover this project. “We have enough insurance to do it correctly,” Cox said in reference to the new building.

Court member Tom Hasty said that although the Court was anxious to get things started and speak with the architect, they wanted to undertake this project slowly so it would be done correctly. He went on to say although it might have been better if the Court had submitted plans to the architect first, the project would still work out. “We can do it just as well this way,” Hasty said. The architect can draw up plans, and the Court can make any necessary changes along the way.

The Court met for the first round of budget meetings immediately after the regular monthly meeting adjourned. A second round of budget meetings will be held November 25 at 9:30 at the DeWitt Courthouse.

On November 20th, 2014 Mrs. Lois E. Lee McNeal, Going from Labor to Reward, lost her battle with cancer and went home to be with the Lord. Lois was a loving Mother and Grandmother “Nanny”, and a true Angel here on Earth. Her life was spent caring for those around her and sacrificing her own desires to protect and nurture those she loved. Lois was proceeded in death by her Husband James McNeal, Mother Jewel Lee, sisters Virginia Dean and Helen Ambler, brother J.B. Lee, niece Pam Cort, and granddaughter Bonnie Duer. She is survived by her brother Billy Lee and his wife Charlotte of Humphrey; daughter Sherry Wages and granddaughter, Jennifer Clendening, and family of Bryant and extended family and friends.

Services will be held on November 29th, 2014 at Essex Funeral Home in Dewitt, Arkansas at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation in the name of Lois McNeal be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.

Offending Others

By Pastor Steve Ellison Few of us want to offend others. We truly do not want to hurt other people’s feelings. We have another motivation also. We do not want to offend others because the hurt is almost always turned back upon us.

The offended person will lash out against us because they see us as the source of their hurt. However, we must understand that we really do not have a choice about offending or not offending. There can be no doubt that each of us will offend God or The Enemy.

Our beliefs and our actions will necessarily be pleasing to one and offensive to the other. Our only choice is in deciding which one we will please and which one we will offend. There is no middle ground. This same principle often holds true in human relationships. The New Testament says in several places that people of all eras take offense at Jesus. Jesus said, “Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.” (Matthew 11:6, Luke 7:23 NASU) As Christians, we are called to live for the pleasure of Christ. Our efforts to please the One who created all, holds all together, and redeemed us from our own folly will certainly offend many. Sadly, our reluctance to risk offending others around us is extinguishing our witness.

The Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons bring out the best in Christian desires to help those less fortunate than us. How can we most effectively help those around us who need it the most? Matthew 11 is instructive. John the Baptist, imprisoned and awaiting execution for pointing out the sin of Herod and Herodias, asked the most important question any person could ever ask. He asked Jesus if He really was the Messiah or if he should look for the true Messiah. Jesus gave a remarkable answer, “The blind receive sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.” (Matthew 11:5-6, NASU) The Messiah is identified because the needy receive what they need most: the blind received sight; the lame were enabled to walk; the lepers were cleansed; the deaf heard; and the dead were raised. The next phrase is the clincher; it covers each of the previous phrases. The poor have the gospel preached to them.

The blind, the lame, the lepers, the deaf, and the dead all certainly fit into the general category of

“the poor”. The greatest need for every one of these needy persons is to have the gospel preached to them.

The New Testament could not be clearer. Preaching the gospel will offend saved sinners and lost sinners alike. The good news must necessarily be preceded by a realization of the bad news. Telling me that Jesus wants to save me is not good news unless I realize that I need to be saved. I will not cry out for forgiveness unless I understand that I am guilty. I will not accept reconciliation with God unless I know that I am estranged from Him by a great chasm that I cannot bridge on my own. These truths are very likely to offend, but presenting them is something Christians must be willing to do. The holiday seasons offer a tremendous opportunity to meet physical needs so that the greatest need can be met. Failure to verbally present the need for salvation and the Savior who is waiting is a tragedy of unspeakable proportions. I beseech you; make it a priority during this holiday season to preach the gospel. To do otherwise is offensive to God. .……..pastorsteve8800@gmail.com

Producers Rice Mill honored Gary Sebree at the company’s 71st Annual Membership Meeting on November 6. Sebree, who retired from the board of directors after 43 years of service, was recognized for his leadership in a video tribute played before 400 members and guests. State Representative David Hillman read a letter from Governor Beebe and presented Sebree with a citation from the Arkansas House of Representatives.

The USA Rice Federation extends congratulations to Gary Sebree. A dedicated industry leader, Sebree is a past chairman of the USA Rice Federation, USA Rice Producers’ Group and the Rice Foundation, and has served on a number of USA Rice committees.

Thanks to everyone who braved the rain Sunday and attended our Christmas Open House Arkansas Coalition for Obesity Prevention (ArCOP) is growing Healthy Communities Pattillo School in DeWitt received a grant of $1157.70 to purchase gardening supplies.

They have 30 children that were involved in this process and approximately 10 teacher, staff and therapist.

The children were involved in the pouring of dirt, planting and harvesting the vegetables. They will continue to have a spring garden.

Kids planted three box gardens two turnip greens, and one with radishes. Pattillo will continue to plant a spring garden as well.

Brown Named Recipient of Bauer Family Scholarship ►

Tiffany Brown of Gillett has been chosen as the recipient of the Bauer Family Scholarship at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA) in DeWitt. Brown is studying early childhood education.

The Bauer Family Scholarship was established to assist Gillett High School graduates attending the DeWitt campus. This scholarship pays $250 per semester. Students must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA to receive the scholarship and a 2.0 cumulative grade point average to maintain the scholarship.

GILLETT EHC ENJOYS THANKSGIVING MEETING The Gillett Extension Homemakers Club held its November meeting on Tuesday, November 18, at The Paddy in Gillett for a Dutchtreat lunch. Seven members and one guest were present.

After enjoying the delicious meal and the blessing by Margie Hackney, Hackney, club president, called the meeting to order. Rose Ella Smith read an inspirational

message based on Matthew 6:2 reminding us that the Bible tells us that if we do good in secret, God will reward us openly.

Dorothy Connelly read the thought for the month: “Living well is an art that can be developed; a love of life and ability to take great pleasure from small offerings and assurance that the world owes you nothing and that every gift is exactly that, a gift,” by Maya Angelou.

Hackney discussed how important lighting is in the home, whether it is lighting used to help us read, do chores, perform other specific tasks or to make areas in our home more attractive. After the program, Smith had two word games that everyone enjoyed. The winners were Becki Weinrich and Hackney; each received a small gift.

Connelly, secretary, called roll with the question, “Do you like watching TV with the light on or off mostly?” Answers were divided evenly. The minutes and treasurer’s reports were accepted.

As new business, the club decided to donate money to help with the Angel Tree project in Gillett.

The meeting closed with the Membership Pledge. The December meeting will be our Christmas celebration at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16, at The Willows in DeWitt for a Dutch-treat lunch.

WILLIAMS PARTICIPATES IN RACE FOR THE CURE Susan Menard Williams recently participated in the Race for the Cure activities with her personal team. The group enjoyed the parade among other things associated with the Little Rock event. Her daughter Natalie Richter, granddaughters Addison and Annsley, niece Darby Menard, close friend Lena Veazey and her daughter Samantha joined Susan.

Back home in Gillett Susan’s mother Barbara Menard organized a walk at Menard Park to honor her daughter and her fight against breast cancer. Several friends and family members joined Barbara and her husband Buzzy to walk the park trail. The Destruction of Jerusalem (No. 2)

Unceasing Thanksgiving

A history book on my desk gives an account of the destruction of Jerusalem. Under the rule of Herod the City had been fortified with great walls around it, until the people (the religious church) thought it was impregnable. Anyone who, at that time, would have publicly foretold of its destruction would have been called a crazy alarmist. But Jesus had said, “Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word shall not pass away.” Matthew 24: 35 Because of her sins, wrath had been pronounced against Jerusalem. Her stubborn unbelief had made her doom certain. The prophet Micah had told them, tho you say “No evil can come up us,” judgement is even now hanging over you! His words came to pass exactly. For years after the doom of Jerusalem had been spoken by Christ Himself, The Lord delayed His judgement on the City and the Nation of Israel. But this long suffering of God with them only caused them to think they had been right in killing the Christ! And so they continued to hate His disciples, and in that way they rejected God’s last offering of mercy!

God withdrew His Protection from them, and they were left to the control of the enemy they had obeyed, when they killed Jesus. Yet, in their blind presumption they publicly declared that they had no fear of Jerusalem being destroyed!

As I read this account my mind went to our beloved United States. The religious people in Jerusalem, even while Titus was attacking the City and had broken through the outer walls, were told to get in the temple and pray for God would deliver them from their enemies! To the very last thousands who were praying in the temple held to their belief that God would save them! But they had spurned God’s Devine Protection, and now they had no defense.

Unhappy America torn apart by some anti-Christ leaders, who sanction the blood of unborn children to flow in our streets. Who promote homosexuality and despise God’s commandments, who gather in churches every week supposing that they are God’s favored ones, and that no harm can come to America!

For many years now some God called ministers have preached across America, that God’s judgement is hanging over her, but generally speaking America only plunges further from God. But to the true believer in Christ we say “Take heart, be not afraid, for not one true Christian perished in Jerusalem. They fled to Pella, beyond Jordan, before it was too late. And God will take His true believers out of America before He destroys it. Amen

A Thought

Daniel “Jesus said [to the woman at the well], ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is who says to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water’.” John 4:10 NKJV “Wells are characterized by depth; their contents give life. The well requires an act of strength to access its life-giving waters; it does not simply flow of its own accord.” This commentary by Rabbi David Segal is a direct reference to the well at which Jacob met his beloved Rachel, but his observation fits well especially in this exchange between Jesus and the Samaritan woman.

Like nearly every story in the Bible, there is always much more than what initially meets the eye. So if we truly believe all Scripture is inspired from Above, we must believe we are invited into a story to look deeper, to exercise “an act of strength” in determination to draw closer. If we truly believe all Scripture to be so inspired, then, we cannot simply accept it as is; to expect it to “flow of its own accord”. It may well do this, but we won’t know if we do not intentionally draw from that well with a determination to do much more than merely quench our own momentary thirst.

The woman was involved in the discussion, but she did not have a “burning bush” moment in which she suddenly saw the light. Even after she went back into the city, she was sharing her encounter with Jesus but was still asking, “Could this be the Christ?” Her efforts speak to what most of us go through almost daily. It is not a matter of doubting Jesus as Messiah; it is, for us, a matter of more fully understanding what is being said in a given moment and what it will mean later.

There is no linear thought in the Scriptures. Though some passages seem very clear as they are, the context from which we draw fuller meaning must always be taken into consideration. Even Jesus’ offer of “living water” and “the food which is to do the will of Him who sent Me (vs 34)” demands a closer look.

Let your daily reflections and devotions become for you much more than the mere words on a page. Recognize that the well from which we must draw the “living water” runs very deep and requires devotion to the task and real effort. We are assured that the effort will have been well worth it.

Thanksgiving.

Such a simple word. But oh how hard to do if we don’t remember to give it.

As we celebrate this special day in our nation this week, I realized anew just how important this attitude of gratitude is in our lives.

In fact, it—along with persistent, perpetual praise—is essential to a contented, joyful life.

Therefore, if you will, allow me the privilege of telling you a number of things I’m thankful for and join in with me with your own litany of Thanksgiving.

First, I’m thankful for having been born in a country like America.

I’ve traveled to quite a few countries around the world through the year, but none of them—not a single one—can compare to these United States.

Even though she’s far from perfect, she’s still the greatest nation on earth because of God’s blessings. And, for that I am thankful.

Next, even though abandoned by my natural parents when I was still young and raised in a very dysfunctional home, I’m thankful that I still had a roof over my head, three meals a day, clean clothes when I went to school and a place to sleep at night.

During those growing up years I also learned the value of hard work and the importance of honesty and integrity.

Even though my adoptive father, John Smith, only had a seventh grade education, from him I learned the meaning of “a day’s work for a day’s pay.” I also learned the importance of your “word being your bond” and a “handshake seals the deal”—for which I am thankful.

I’m also thankful for various teachers during my school years who took an interest in me, in spite of my quirks and faults. They were patient with me and did their best to challenge me to excel in academics, sports, extracurricular activities, etc. And, for them and their patient persistence I am thankful.

I’d be remiss in my reflections and recitation of my reasons for thanksgiving without remembering my family. How thankful I am for the Lord leading a beautiful young lady into my life and making her my wife when I was only 20-years-old. What was He thinking? Only He knows—but it was good.

Then He blessed us with three great sons, followed later on my two loving daughters-in-law and four beautiful grandchildren. And, when He suddenly called Margaret Home almost three years ago, He knew my need of another companion in life and blessed me with Debbie—for whom I am thankful.

But, most of all I’m thankful to the Heavenly Father for loving me more than I can ever understand. Why He chose to pardon me from my sins through His Son Jesus Christ and adopt me into His Family I’ll never know.

Why He’s chosen to use me through all these years, I cannot understand; yet, I do know this: I can never cease to thank Him for His Grace and Mercy so freely given to a sinner like me.

And, the only way I can try to repay Him for all He’s done for me is to live a life of Thanksliving.

In I Thessalonians 5:18 we read “In everything give thanks—for this is the Will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” Thus, it’s clear that unceasing thanksgiving should govern everything that we think, say and do. Even when things we falling apart, we should give thanks.

Even when others have hurt us by the things they say or do, we should render perpetual praise to the One Who has given us everything that we have or need.

Therefore, it’s my prayer that we’ll spend some time this week thanking God for His many blessings down through the years. Then, I hope we’ll also dedicate ourselves from this point on to say with the Psalmist David, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your Sight, O LORD, my Strength and my Redeemer” (Ps. 19:14).

That way we’ll always fulfill God’s Will in our lives and not live in regret for things we’ve said and done.

To the Lord Jesus Christ be all the Glory. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving. God bless you.

Timeless Tale of The Velveteen Rabbit Takes Stage The Arkansas Arts Center, the state’s premiere center for visual and performing arts, Children’s Theatre presents The Velveteen Rabbit November 28 – December 21.

“This play is a great chance to introduce children to the magic of theatre,” said Todd Herman, executive director of the Arkansas Arts Center. “Audiences of all ages are invited to experience the excitement as the Velveteen Rabbit goes down his long road to becoming real.”

“What is real?” the Velveteen Rabbit asks his strange new friend. “Real is something that happens to you when a child loves you for a long, long, time – not just to play with – but really loves you,” the old Skin Horse replies. From this moment on, the timid toy bunny longs for only one thing in the world – to become real. But how can he become real when the boy doesn’t play with him or even notice him, let alone love him? Then one day, the Velveteen Rabbit is taken from the dark toy cupboard and finds himself in the warm arms of a sleeping child.

Dragons and Dragonettes Host White Hall

By Dawn Teer The Dragon Basketball season began in earnest on Monday, November 17, in DeWitt. The Jr. Dragons and Dragonettes hosted White Hall.

The Jr. Dragonettes were victorious with a score of 36 – 22. On Tuesday, they defeated the Jr. Lady Birds by a score of 40-25. On Thursday, the girls beat Brinkley as well, that score was unavailable to this reporter at press time.

The Jr. Dragons also played three games last week, against White Hall, Stuttgart, and Brinkley.

The Jr. Dragons were no match against the Stuttgart Ricebirds who won 51-6.

They say the third time is the charm, well that would prove right when the Jr. Dragons played Brinkley on Thursday.

Coach Jerome Wilson had this to say, “Last night we played Brinkley and got on the winning side finally. We had worked on attacking the basket during practice and that paid off big for us. We

won the game 41-24. Gauge Lane led all scorers with 21 points 18 of which came in the first half. We had the opportunity to get a lot of guys some playing time because the first team had put the game away by building a 22 point lead going into half time.”

“After a 0-3 start, I hoped we would get our first win before the Thanksgiving break. It was good night for the entire DeWitt Basketball Program as all four teams were victorious.” He added.

It was Coach Wilson’s first win as a head coach. Congratulations to Coach Wilson and the Jr. Dragons!

The Sr. Dragonettes lost to the Lady Birds 42-29. The Dragonettes started with a 3-0 lead, but the Lady Birds put the pressure on. The half time score of 19-17 showed how close this game was.

However, the Birds ability to score five three pointers during the second half cinched the win. This reporter was unable to get the score for the Brinkley

As with the Sr. girls, the Sr. Boys met Stuttgart Ricebirds and at the half, it was a 2-point game. 26-24, in favor of the Birds. While the Dragons started with an 11-point run, the Birds were able to force turnovers and cause the Dragons problems shooting. After halftime, both teams battled hard and DeWitt was able to put pressure on the Birds with their full court press. They were unable to take advantage of opportunities to score. The final score was 53-40 in favor of the Birds. Top scorers were Tyren Robinson with 13 points and Jamari Gamble with 8 points.

Thursday’s game against Brinkley showed a great improvement by the Dragons and the proof was in the scoring. The Dragons led Brinkley 32-21 at the half. They consistently kept a 10-point lead evidenced in the final score: Dragons 63 Brinkley 53.

Coach Justin Russell had this to say about the Sr. Dragon games last week, “Stuttgart game: Jumped out to a fast start but, first game mistakes began to creep in. We had way too many turnovers and became inefficient on offense, particularly in the 3rd qtr. I was, however, pleased with the defensive effort and most mistakes can be corrected, as we play more games. It will take sometime to establish our offensive rhythm. “ “Brinkley game: We played much better on both ends of the court. We shot 57% from the floor including 6-11 from the 3pt line. Nine different players scored for us. We are still showing some rust but that should continue to improve. It was really encouraging to see so many guys contribute. “ Top scorers for the Brinkley game were Tyren Robinson 17 points, Landon Turner 12 points, Layne Ballew 8 points, and Connor Blevins 6 points.

LOCAL NEWS Tough Learning Curve Now Reaping Success for Razorback Coach and Team

By Robert Shields The question I asked last week was: Will the beating of LSU become a cornerstone upon which another brick could be laid?

The answer Saturday was yes.

The Razorbacks not only placed the brick, they ran the rebar right through Ole Miss.

In doing so, the team became bowl eligible only needing one more win to prove me wrong with my preseason prediction of 6-6. (Look it up, Internet.)

This Razorback team is not the same one that started the season, and credit can go to Coach Bret Bielema. The team has gotten better throughout the season, and that is coaching.

The team has grown, but not only the team, so has the coach. Bielema said several times during the losing streak that the team “would win when they earn it.”

We will never know, but maybe in some small part, he was also talking about himself as a coach.

He has earned the last two SEC victories in smashing fashion.

In the post-game press conference, Bielema said, “Maybe I have also grown as a coach.” He pointed out that when they won the toss this time they deferred it to the second half, which is a practice done by most SEC coaches and a good sign that maybe Bielema is not completely obstinate and set in his ways.

Bielema was determined early in the game when the score was 10-0 and the

team was at the goal line that they were going to go for it on fourth down. A field goal would have been defeating. After a penalty gave the Razorbacks new life and another chance on fourth down, the team went at it again and scored to make it 17-0. The game was over at that point.

In other games, Bielema has been more conservative and might have taken the field goal. There were fourth-down chances in the Texas A&M, Alabama, and Mississippi State games that if the Razorbacks would have gone for them and made it, the outcome of those games might have been very different.

And if the Razorbacks would have won those games, they would have been leading the SEC West only needing to beat Missouri to get into the SEC Championship game. The Razorbacks would be 6-2 in the SEC West with the tiebreaker over Alabama and Mississippi State.

Amazingly, the Razorbacks could have or should have beaten two of the teams that will be in the four-team college football playoff.

Regardless, this team’s turnaround has been through the defense. After accomplishing what had never been done before with an unranked team shutting out a ranked team on back-to-back weekends, this defense is making it easy for the offense to play within itself.

The credit for the defense also largely goes to Bielema. After an absolute sick-

ening defensive effort over the last two years, Bielema changed out his defensive coaching staff almost completely save for Randy Shannon. Give Shannon some credits also as the linebackers have come light years and may be the best group of Razorback linebackers to take the field since David Bazzel played.

Coordinator Robb Smith has taken over the defense and has turned them into a pack of “piranhas” to use Bret Bielema’s word. Others will certainly come after him now, and the Razorbacks need to tie him down.

Also, some credit goes to Steve Loney who has been working in the shadows.

Bielema took a page from Nick Saban, as he said in a recent press conference, and hired him as a consultant. Bielema’s old friend has broken down film on Razorbacks opponents two weeks out. This has been money well spent.

The defense now understands what other teams are doing and adjusts accordingly.

Give Smith credit for being able to implement what the consultant is effectively seeing on film. Some guys are just good at seeing what other teams are doing and even more importantly, why they are doing it.

The work of the consultant breaking down film is also paying dividends on the offensive side. It’s no small coincidence the Razorback offense is killing people in the first quarter. This is due to

good research by the consultant and enables Bielema and his staff to implement a better game plan. It usually takes other team’s defenses a half to catch up to what Arkansas is doing.

Gone are the days of Bielema talking about hurry-up offenses or coming here to beat Alabama. All he talks about now is doing things the right way.

This goes back to his speech given at the Little Rock Touchdown Club about his own personal story of building a fence.

His dad instructed him and his brother how to do it properly. They started cutting corners on how many and how to put the nails into the posts. The fence failed. He said this taught him to do it the right way.

Bielema is learning how to do it the right way in the SEC, and now he’s adapted with great success. This is a sign of a great coach.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Bielema is still learning. He’s only 44, still a very young coach. He has only been a head coach for eight years. And, he’s only in his second year in the SEC, one of the most competitive leagues in the world in any sport.

Every team in the SEC West is bowl eligible, and every team the Hogs have faced in the SEC have been ranked No. 17 or higher.

That is a tough learning curve for any new coach. But if the current trend holds, Bielema seems to be getting up to speed fast.

When Families Grieve at the Holidays: Supporting Children Coping with Loss WASHINGTON – The holidays can be a magical time of year, but for children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or another significant person in their lives, the holiday season can be tough. It also poses challenges for stillgrieving family members and caregivers around them.

“The holiday season can be particularly difficult for families, because children carry their own expectations about the holidays, as well as their own grief over the death,” said Bonnie Carroll, military widow and founder of the nonprofit organization Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). “The holidays can be full of bittersweet moments. They can also be an opportunity to honor and remember the person who died and the legacy that special person left for a child.”

Since its founding in 1994 by bereaved military families, TAPS has offered comfort and care to more than 50,000 people grieving the death of someone who served in the military and their caregivers, and is a recognized expert in child bereavement. TAPS Good Grief Camps are attended by thousands of children and teens annually. TAPS offers the following tips to help families supporting a bereaved child over the holidays: Talk with your child about the holiday season. Anticipating the holiday, especially if it’s the first holiday without a family member, can be worse than the actual holiday. Talk with your child about their feelings and expectations for the holiday season. Discuss the activities your child would like to participate in or attend.

Even if your child does not talk frequently about the death, do not expect for your child to be “over it.” Children grieve on their own time frame and differently from adults. Significant milestones, such as the first holiday after the loss, may cause the child’s feelings about the loss to re-surface, even if the child has not talked about the death for a while.

Make holiday plans that help your child feel nurtured, emotionally safe, and comfortable. Review your plans for the holidays with your child. Spend the holidays where you and your child feel supported,

nurtured and comfortable.

Encourage your child to attend holiday functions. Consider attending holiday parties and activities, especially if you and your child will be able to spend time with supportive family members and friends. Make an escape plan in case the event is more than you or your child can handle and trust your hosts to understand if you need to slip out.

Laughter, play and joy are good for your child. Children do not grieve continuously and they need to take breaks from grieving. Encourage your child to play, run and do recreational activities he or she would normally do. Clowning around and laughing (which releases endorphins into the brain) are healthy and normal for children.

Be observant about your child’s emotions. Realize that familiar traditions, sights, smells, and tastes, may be comforting, or may jolt emotions. Watch how your child responds to events and be ready to be supportive and comfort your child.

Comfort items that remind the child of the loved one who died may help. Allowing your child to sleep in a favorite shirt that belonged to the person who died may offer comfort. Letting your child carry a special item that reminds him or her of the person who died may help the child feel connected. Placing a photograph of the child with the person who died or from a holiday celebration in a special place, may help.

Pay attention to your child’s health. It’s often difficult for adults and children alike who have experienced a recent death to sleep. Make sure your child gets regular rest, eats well and drink lots of water.

Holiday treats are ok, but in moderation. Bed wetting, acting out and nightmares may be signs of struggling. Talk with your medical care provider if you become concerned about your child’s health.

Do not pretend your family has not experienced a loss. Let your child know that you also miss the person who died. Tell your child that you don’t like that things cannot be exactly like they were before

Thanksgiving Offers Time for Gratitude

I’ve never been one to begin celebrating Christmas before Thanksgiving.

It’s not that I disapprove of those who do or that I don’t enjoy Christmastime. I’ve just always thought Thanksgiving has much more to offer than what initially meets the eye. And it goes well beyond Pilgrims and Native Americans, turkeys, family gatherings, and yes, even football.

I believe Thanksgiving’s greatest gift to us is opportunity; opportunity that demands we stop our busy lives and gratefully take stock of the provisions given to us throughout the year.

Our Founding Fathers recognized this opportunity.

In his first year as president of the United States, George Washington established the first nationwide Thanksgiving celebration on November 26, 1789, stating the holiday “as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer.” Meanwhile, President Abraham Lincoln, who established Thanksgiving as a federal holiday, said that our “bounties…should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people.” And for more than 150 years since Lincoln’s proclamation, our nation has paused on the last Thursday of each November to collectively give thanks.

This year, we, as the First District of Arkansas, have much for which to show our gratitude. We have 30 counties in the First District that include the fertile fields and cultural heritage of the Arkansas Delta, the rice fields and duck hunting of the Grand Prairie, the geologic anomaly of Crowley’s Ridge, and the scenic, tourism destinations of the Ozark Mountains. Calling this place “home” is truly a privilege to us all, and I encourage that we experience as much of its different

regions as possible.

On a personal note of thanks, I’ll start by expressing gratitude for the progress in Washington that impacts our district, because the process has not proven easy.

Beginning with the 2014 farm bill, Congress battled through sharp differences that extended well beyond party affiliation into geographic divides and the evergrowing disconnect between urban and rural communities. Nevertheless, I think the final bill passed early this year promotes regional fairness by protecting all producers from market risks while also securing our nation’s food supply and providing nutrition assistance to families who need it most.

I’m also grateful for WRRDA, the Water Resources Reform and Development Act. Water is a vital resource to the First District, and this overwhelmingly bipartisan legislation deauthorizes $18 billion of inactive projects, accelerates new project delivery while increasing transparency, streamlines environmental reviews, protects communities, improves economic competitiveness, and notably, creates jobs.

Even more importantly than any legislation, however, I’m grateful for the freedoms and liberty we enjoy each day as Americans as well as the men and women who fought to make that dream possible. And finally, as a husband and a father, I’m thankful for my wife, Stacy, and my two children, Will and Delaney. I carry their love and support to and from Washington, and it’s the highlight of my week to come home to them.

The English poet William Blake once said, “The thankful receiver bears a plentiful harvest.” Thanksgiving has much to offer us, so let’s make sure we accept its gift this year and bear a harvest of gratitude all of next.

DMS Art Students Build Medina Awarded Robots Memorial Scholarship Maribel Medina of DeWitt has been chosen as the recipient of the Dr. John M. Hestir Memorial Scholarship at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA) in DeWitt.

The Hestir Nursing Scholarship was established to assist students on the DeWitt campus and pays $250 per semester. Students must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA to receive and maintain the scholarship.

Operation Christmas Child

First Baptist Church collected a total of 4183 Operation Christmas Child packages from Arkansas County with 2667 from South Arkansas County alone. Monday November 24th, all boxes were picked up and sent to Little Rock. After leaving Little Rock, the boxes will be distributed in Ghana, Mexico, and Niger.

Operation Christmas Child is the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind, it

uses gift-filled shoeboxes to share God’s love in a tangible way with needy children around the world.

Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has collected and delivered more than 113 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in over 150 countries through Operation Christmas Child.

Letter to the Editor: Leaf Burning As a citizen of DeWitt and concerned mother, I am writing this letter to bring awareness to the people of DeWitt about the health hazards of burning leaves.

I grew up in DeWitt and my daughter is a fifth generation citizen of this community. However, I moved away for 22 years and decided to move back to my hometown to be closer to family and knew it would be a safe place to raise my 4 year-old daughter.

When I bought a house in DeWitt, the thought of leaf burning never entered my mind. During the 22 years that I lived in other areas, leaf burning was not allowed. Leaf burning has been a tradition in DeWitt for many years. Hopefully, with knowledge, mulching will become the new tradition. When people are burning leaves in DeWitt, my daughter and I sit inside and watch the world go by because both of us have difficulty breathing due to the large amount of smoke in the air. As a result of this, we started researching the effects of burning leaves and found that it is much more harmful than we realized.

My mother, Mary Carr, and I have met with the City Council several times concerning the hazards of burning in our community and first presented the Council with a petition to ban the burning of leaves and provide an alternative with curbside leaf pickup. After research, we discovered that Stuttgart and other communities in Arkansas also provide this service for their citizens. Many towns and cities do not allow citizens to burn leaves. In fact, our neighboring community of Stuttgart has had some type of burning ordinance in place since 1926. At the October meeting, the Council voted to ask the people of DeWitt to use alternatives

to burning leaves. One alternative would be to mulch, which is simply mowing your leaves. This process creates organic mulch and provides nutrients to the soil.

Another alternative would be to compost leaves to be used as mulch for plants and garden areas. If you think about it, both alternatives are much faster, safer, and better for your health than raking and watching a pile of burning leaves. Mayor Ralph Relyea is looking into other alternatives for our community. One alternative would be a leaf pick up service provided by the city. A machine would pick up leaves from the edge of your yard and the leaves would be used for composting.

We can all remember a time when cigarette smoke was allowed in restaurants and other public places. Today, it isn’t. In fact, research has proven that leaf smoke contains up to 27% of all known carcinogens (cancer causing agents): cigarettes contain only 6%. The smoke from wet leaves contains mold and other toxins that are released into the air. When we breathe this type of smoke, it gets deep into the lungs and can cause serious long-term damage. Some of the damage may not be seen until years later. Further, breathing smoke from burning leaves is especially harmful to a child’s developing lungs, pregnant women and anyone over 65. It is also extremely harmful to people with cancer, heart disease, allergies, COPD, and asthma.

Mulching and composting will be a way to recycle leaves, protect our environment, and the health of your children, family, friends, and neighbors. Before making a decision on how you will handle the leaves in your yard, please consider your alternatives to help provide clean air for our community.

School Board Meeting

The DeWitt School Board held its’ monthly meeting on November 12 at 5 pm. All members except Kenneth Graves were present, including Superintendent, Dr. Lynne Dardenne. The meeting began with the call to order, approval of the minutes from the October 14, followed by approval of the financial report. Included in the financial report was information regarding the E2 computers that were given to Gillett elementary and DeWitt elementary school students. In addition, two busses ordered, have arrived, one of which is a travel bus, built to be roomier than the average bus, due to its use for football players and band members. They are still awaiting arrival of the Special Ed bus.

Dr. Dardenne reported that the projected income amount from taxes is going to be $1.9 million and with the homestead amounts, the total would be approximately $2 million.

The Board then moved on to consider continuation of Business Trip Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage. This passed unanimously. Next was consideration of contracting for architectural services for the new middle school. Steve Elliott of Elliott, McMorran and Vaden, has completed an initial drawing. The fee is set at 6% of project cost, which is between the average fees of 4% - 8%.

Requests to use facilities have been submitted by the Gillett Farmers and Businessmen’s’ Civic Club, and Acres of Help. The Gillett group has requested to use the Gillett gym for the Coon Supper on January 10. Acres of Help have requested use of the DeWitt High School cafeteria for their annual banquet on February 7. Both requests were approved unanimously. Brief discussion was then made regarding the Maintenance Agreement for the security cameras with Arkansas State Security. After discussion regarding the cost of the agreement, what services have been performed since the cameras were installed, and whether or not a lower amount could be negotiated. Dr. Dardenne agreed to contact the company and find out. This was then tabled until further information could be received.

Next item on the agenda was consideration of giving a one time bonus for all currently contracted staff. This was

unanimously approved and agreed that the bonuses be given this month. Each of the board members agreed they were glad to be able to do this for the employees.

Voting delegates for The Arkansas School Board Association convention held in December in Little Rock were then voted on. Brad Koen and Johnny Lockley will be attending and representing the board.

Last on the agenda was consideration of a continued agreement with ASBA for unemployment compensation assistance. This too, passed unanimously.

The Superintendent’s Report was then discussed regarding the recent Arkansas report card on school districts. The report unfortunately, is not an accurate reflection of the way many school districts in the state are doing. Because 2011, the baseline year used for comparison, was such a good year for the district, it set the bar quite high for the following years. To borrow a phrase from Kathy Hopson of the Stuttgart School District, “It is comparing apples to oranges.” DeWitt School District actually falls in the middle of all the schools in the state. For example, when looking at the graduation rate, DeWitt has an 88.18% graduation rate.

Many area schools around DeWitt have lower graduating rates, yet managed to receive an achieving rating, while DeWitt had a needs improvement rating.

The Annual Measurable Objective for graduating seniors was 99, in 2013, DeWitt graduated 97. Another factor that comes into play is that even if a senior does not graduate, due to circumstances beyond the school’s control, such as moving to another town or state and not reenrolling in school, the district is still penalized for that.

Much discussion was brought forth to find out if there is an appeal process that can be filed to help the district. It was decided to look into this further to see if anything could be done.

An announcement regarding the election of Terry Whiting, Board member Drew Whiting’s father, to the Arkansas State All Century Football Team. He is scheduled to be inducted on December 3.

The DeWitt School Board meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Administrative offices.
