DEMOCRAT-The Barton County Chamber of Commerce’s “Shop Where Your Heart Is, Buy Local” campaign is nearing the finish line, which is midnight, November 30. When the contest is over, a random drawing will be held to determine the winner of the $500 prize. The prize will be five $100 checks, all of which must be spent in Barton County. Somewhat like five gift certificates. For those who have not yet entered, three receipts from any seller in Barton County can be turned in to the chamber of commerce office in exchange for one ticket, which will be entered in the drawing. Any receipt qualifies including utility receipts and restaurant receipts. The amount of money the receipts are for doesn’t matter. The ratio remains the same, three receipts qualify for one ticket to be entered in the contest. Consequently, the more receipts turned in, the better one’s chances of winning the $500. The contest is countywide, which means any receipt from a sale anywhere in Barton County can be used toward qualifying for a ticket in the drawing. Chamber Executive Director Astra Ferris says at the end of the campaign, the chamber will quantify the tax dollars kept here in Barton County by the campaign that go toward city and county governments providing goods and services to county residents. She adds that the contest will become an annual event each November hereafter.

Nutrition educators help out at Ozarks Food Harvest
Nutrition educators and staff with the University of Missouri’s Family Nutrition Education Program spent Monday afternoon at Ozarks Food Harvest, helping pack 8,726 pounds of food that provided 7,272 meals to low income children and families. Southwest Region Program Director Terri Fossett felt the MU Extension goal of helping to improve the lives of Missourians was well served by this endeavor. Nutrition educators with the University of Missouri’s Family Nutrition Education Program serve almost every county in southwest Missouri, providing research-based nutrition education to area schools, farmers’ markets, health departments, senior centers and many food pantries, including those in the Ozarks Food Harvest Network. In addition to providing reliable information about healthy eating the nutrition program helps low-income adults learn how to make their food budget

Lamar Community Theatre to present Christmas showcase
The Lamar Community Theatre will present a Christmas Performing Arts Showcase and Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Thiebaud Auditorium in Lamar. The expected community theatre fall show was postponed until Spring, so the board of directors decided to put on a Christmas variety show. They are hard at work combining all their talents and talented friends to create a fast paced and fun holiday happening. Tickets will be $5 with advanced sales at the Lamar Parks and Rec office in Thiebaud, at the Barton County Chamber of Commerce office on the north side of the square and at the door the night of the event. Proceeds will fund a scholarship for a Barton County student who is advancing in any form of performing arts. Santa will be in the house to take pictures, so bring the kids and bring a camera.
Along with the show, vendors are being recruited for a holiday bazaar. Patrons can pick up last minute gifts, enjoy baked goods, a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy the holiday atmosphere. Booths will be open from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and again during intermission and every vendor will provide a door prize. Individuals must be present to win. There still is room for a few more vendors, so in order to reserve a space call 417-214-6433. LCT supports the “Shop Local” efforts of the Barton County Chamber. This event promises to be the most holiday fun you will have this side of the mistletoe. Included will be music, drama, dance, comedy and a Christmas carol sing-a-long. Lamar Community Theatre is the best $5 entertainment value around. Hope to see you there!
Thorco presents $500 check to Golden City Fire Department Mark Long from Thorco presented a $500 check to the Golden City Fire Department. The donation, along with donations from C-Mac, Fast Eddie's, LBT and Isenhower Lumber, helped purchase fire safety kits for 135 students including
those in Head Start. The Golden City Fire Department had a Fire Safety Day on October 8. They would like to thank the above businesses for their help in making this possible and look forward to doing it again next year.
