Daughter’s Book Creates Legacy From Parent’s Treasures When most people think of World War II, a vast array of images and memories come to mind. Depending on your age, you envision the forties in flashes of music, movies and war posters. Some are lucky enough to have heard rare first-hand accounts from the soldiers themselves. Others remember the stories told by the friends and loved ones left behind.

Then there are the archived photos, letters, old uniforms and faded scrapbooks. Those who had access to these treasures were the really lucky ones.

Much more powerful and poignant than any book or magazine, they tell a single story; one leaf in the vast book of recorded history.

Marsha Knudsen is one of the lucky ones. Her parents, Ruth and Homer Norris were Ralls County natives and were married for 63 years. After her parents’ deaths in 2005 and 2008 she began a slow journey of discovery when she opened an old steamer trunk. Inside was priceless historical treasure. Bundles of air mail letters tied with ribbon nestled among diaries and journals. A sectioned box held a ring with an “N” engraved on it and a golden locket marked with a flowing, cursive “R.” Knudsen didn’t remember her father talking much about his war experiences. He and Ruth were newlyweds when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. His sailor’s letters chronicled the physical demands,

NECAC, FACT honor Congressman Graves

For a lot of people Veterans Day is on the love it or ignore it list of holidays. If you have veterans in your family or know/ work with those who have served in the military, it’s a natural part of your November calendar. If your life doesn’t include any direct contact with those who have served their country, then it’s just an annoying day when the banks and post offices are closed.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending two

ceremonies celebrating our nation’s veterans. The first was at the Bill Trower Memorial Park in Perry at 11 in the morning of Nov. 11; the second was at Center Elementary School later that afternoon. Other celebrations were held throughout the county.

New London Elementary and Mark Twain High School both held ceremonies honoring local veterans. Several veterans spoke to the students and answered questions about their service.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS It was a Friday night high school football game between undefeated Hogan Prep and Oak Grove, a playoff game. With less than a minute to play, Oak Grove trails 44 to46.

The play comes over the sideline and 81 year old George Pirch, who calls himself a retired nonpaid utility coach, is hit

and knocked down with a broken hip. Not knowing his hip was broken, they loaded him in to a John Deere Gator vehicle used to transport injured players off the field. Only one thing wrong. It was pointed the wrong direction, and George couldn’t see the field. They were planning on transporting

THANKSGIVING Well, here it is; almost Thanksgiving. Interesting that political correctness still allows celebration of this occasion. Native Americans have not yet filed suits against alluding to them as Indians. (Genetically, they’re not even close.) I wonder if there’s any record of how the Vikings referred to the indigenous inhabitants during the explorations of North America. (Which wasn’t even North America then, because the Vikings didn’t know there was a big river with a whole other continent wrapped around it, dangling by an isthmus from what they had found.)

they weren’t looking for spice trade (or Spice Girls), and probably had never heard of India, they most likely did not engage in the over-exuberant presumptions of Columbus.

But, the invisible protective shield had been compromised, and next thing you knew, there were undocumented immigrants claiming squatters rights all over the place. Most had little, if any, desire to learn and communicate using the indigenous language. In fact, most of the aliens chose to form their own little ethnic and religious enclaves, which they called “colonies.”

I was an English major in college, and a love of reading has been a driving part of my life as long as I can remember. Historical novels were some of my childhood favorites and many of them dealt with armed conflicts, whether it was Robin Hood, Vikings, pirates or Indians.

My curiosity was whetted and I turned to the factual to flesh out what I had learned through fiction.

It heartens me to see the number of biographies and historical novels geared towards young readers. We live history every day. You only have to turn on the news and see the turmoil all across the globe, much of it directly or indirectly affecting the U.S. Or switch to the National Geographic channel or another science or history channel and it’s easy to get caught up in colonial or medieval times. I used to tell my

students that learning was all about connections.

Literature and history go hand in hand. Stories and poetry respond to the events of the era and shed light on the culture and human condition of the time and place.

What a wonderful natural resource we have in our veterans. Though some stories of their service are too personal or too painful to relate, there are many that can help a young person understand what it was like to be on foreign soil under hostile conditions. Time and place, politics and culture, and the human element in currents events are powerful lessons.

The holidays are a great time to talk with the veterans in your life. Let them know they are appreciated for the soldier they were and the person they are. Listen and learn and remember.

George is loaded in to the ambulance, taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where the next day a rod and three screws are inserted in his hip. He wanted the operation completed in time so that he would to be able to watch the Missouri football game that afternoon on TV from his hospital bed. This is another George Pirch story for John Dee Thompson, the Ray County Commissioners, and a follow-up to my George Pirch article.

In reference to an article I recently did on Halloween, my wife Lau-

ra reminded me that the American Legion Auxiliary sponsored Trick-or Treat for UNICEF. When the trick-or-treaters returned and turned in their banks, they were given cookies and treats at that time.

A classmate reminded me that when we loaded the streets up with farm machinery on Halloween night, we also put axle grease on the door handle of Jitterbug Robinson’s Drug Store. Jitterbug was a nervous sort of guy. Every morning after Halloween he would forget, end up with a handful of grease, and the townspeople would hear some classic cuss words.

Americans were immigrants through an uncontrolled border, but since no one can prove that they weren’t the first to settle here, we’ll acknowledge their precedence), the various colonies squabbled over political allegiance, religious orientation, and sometimes would not even talk to each other to resolve issues. Sooner or later, one faction would achieve dominant status, and that’s the way things were for a while.

Fast forward to day-before-yesterday, and then do a quantum leap back to the future. Durned if it isn’t almost Thanksgiving.

Yep! That’s it. That little spec of human bonding barely visible amidst the glare of meteoric sales emerging out of the “Black Profit” marketing continuum.

Probably, because Thanksgiving itself has no economic impact on the people who don’t like us but do want to sell stuff to U.S. consumers, they ignore this holiday almost as much as Groundhog’s Day. This allows them to concentrate their disapproval on Christmas materialism (without which, most would be impoverished) and the observance

of a Christian holiday.

I find no record that there was ever a colony related to any political orientation in what is now the U.S. (or anywhere else, for that matter) that was established on the basis of Atheism.

Although some of the colonies did define “freedom of religion” as “my way or the highway,” the option of leaving was open.

Other than the ancestors of many of our black population, no one has been forced to emigrate to the United States.

If a religious order practicing in the United States is offended by the religious observance of another order; that is their right. It is also their problem. Political correctness is not an excuse to restrict the free observance of any religious celebration. Actually, political correctness is in direct confrontation with our Constitution. The spineless administrators who would cancel the observance of Christmas because some other religion finds it offensive should then ban all other religious observances and see how far they get with the ACLU and the courts.

Missouri Minimum Wage Rate Set Wage Rate in Effect Jan. 1

The Missouri Department of Labor announces the state minimum wage rate for 2015 has been established, according to state law, at $7.65, effective January 1.

All businesses are required to pay at minimum, the $7.65 hourly rate, except retail and service businesses whose

annual gross sales are less than $500,000. Per state law, the minimum wage rate is calculated once a year and may increase or decrease based on the cost of living as measured by the previous year’s Consumer Price Index.

Missouri law does not allow the state’s minimum wage rate to be lower than

the federal minimum wage rate.

Compensation for tipped employees must also total at least $7.65 per hour. Employers are required to pay tipped employees at least 50 percent of the minimum wage, or the amount necessary to bring the employee’s total compensation to a mini-

mum of $7.65 per hour.

Farm bill sign-up takes hard decisions for crop coverage, meetings explain “Crop farmers have hard decisions to make under the 2014 farm bill,” Scott Brown told 140 growers at Macon, Nov. 11.

“This farm bill is like nothing you’ve seen before,” said Brown, University of Missouri agricultural economist. “You won’t walk out of here knowing how to sign up your farm.”

Macon was one of four stops in three days for a farm-bill team from Missouri Farm Service Agency (FSA) and MU Extension.

Mike Lafolette, from the FSA state office in Columbia, said, “This gets very complex. But first, know that direct payments are gone.”

With the last farm bill, crop farmers signed up at FSA offices. A few weeks later, their check arrived.

In the new law, farmers must choose one of three options. Then they won’t receive a check, if one comes, until next year after selling crops.

There are two major plans: Price Loss Coverage (PLC) and Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC). PLC covers crop prices. ARC covers farm revenue from yield and price.

A complexity: There are two ARCs. ARCCO uses county average yields. ARC-IC, for an individual’s farm, uses proven farm yields.

In bad years the farm bill provides a safety net.

“It’s insurance without a premium,” he added.

Decisions differ for each farm, speakers said.

Growers with multiple farms can enroll each in a different program, except under ARCIC, where all farms are lumped together.

There’s lots of homework before going to the FSA office to sign up.

Mike Cadle, FSA state director, said, “We can’t tell you which program is best. You must decide.”

Under this farm bill, Congress mandated FSA and extension join to explain the programs. To help, MU FAPRI (Food and Agriculture Policy Research Institute) joined Texas A&M economists to create computer tools to help farmers study options.

Joe Outlaw, from College Station, Texas, said, “This tool won’t tell which program is best.

It gives numbers to help you choose.”

He warned that “farmers’ fat fingers” will be typing a lot of farm

data. But the software does a lot of data entry, he said. The tool downloads commodity prices and outlooks, plus county yield averages and other FSA records. Those numbers may be needed for farm calculations.

Pat Westhoff, from FAPRI, said decisions would be easy if farmers knew future yields and prices. His group will post monthly outlooks to use.

Brown assured farmers that local FSA and MU Extension specialists will hold follow-up meetings in most counties. His website will show new details at http://farmbill.missouri. edu.

“There are many people who can help,” he said. Contacts are on the website, a part of the MU agricultural economics department. Groups sponsoring local meetings include corn and soybean growers, Missouri Farm Bureau and FCS Financial.

Cadle said many farmers who’ve never come to an FSA office will be coming in to sign up. Grass farmers who don’t plant crops may be eligible for safety-net help. If their farm has an FSA crop base, that can be used.

Because of the complexity of the farm bill, it has taken since April to write crop rules. As a result, there was no program sign-up for 2014.

Farmers can sign up for 2014 and 2015 starting now.

In August, all owners and operators received from FSA a printout of base acres and yields on file. The first step will be to find the FSA letter and confirm its accuracy. It can be updated.

That data applies for five years, the life of the bill.

Once a farm bill selection is made it cannot be changed.

On the first visit to the FSA office, update the yield records, Brown said. The next step is base reallocation.

“You can reallocate your base acres, but you cannot increase the base,” Lafolette said. “A lot of grass was plowed to plant crops. Those acres will not increase your base.”

All farmers and landowners should attend local farm bill meetings.

The first deadline, for yield update and base reallocation, is Feb. 27.

Selection of ARC or PLC is March 31.

LOCAL HISTORY A View From the Past

“Yesteryears from the local papers”

Members of the V.F.W. P0st #4088 in Perry was very active in the community during the years after the return of veterans after World War II. The membership was large and the young men participated in 4th of July celebrations, marched in parades throughout the year, held dances and picnics, tended to the local cemeteries and placed flags on Memorial Day. The above picture is from the V.F.W. scrapbooks scanned into the on-line library at the Ralls County Historical Society. It did not include the veterans’ names or the particular event pictured.

The following news items were taken from newspaper accounts courtesy of Ron Leake, president of the Ralls County Historical Society.

Pvt. Jeff Woodhurst of this city has been slightly wounded in action in France, according to a telegram from the War Department to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Woodhurst, north of town. He was wounded in action July 28th and the department stated that progress reports will be forwarded as received.

We are indeed sorry to hear this news and hope with all of Jeff ’s friends that he will make a speedy recovery.

Men from this community have been wounded in all the European theatres – North Africa, Italy and now in France.

Private Daniel Warren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ola Warren, of DeSoto, Kansas, was inducted into the Army on February 18, 1943, and received his 11 weeks of basic training in the medical corps at Camp Robinson, Ark. Pvt. Warren is now stationed at Camp Swift, Texas, where he is work-

ing in the hospital. Mrs. Warren is at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Swon, north of Perry.

Private Donald Goodhart, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Goodhart of this city, was inducted into the Army in October and received his basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas. He is in the Infantry and is now stationed at San Francisco, California.

Private Marvin Griffith, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Griffith, of this city, was inducted into the Army at Jefferson Barracks on January 1, 1943.

He is now stationed at Camp Stewart, Georgia, where he is a member of a Coast Artillery unit.

Charley Francis Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Davis, near town, is with a cavalry unit and is stationed at Santa Rosa, California. He has been in the service about nine and a half months and has also been stationed in Arizona for a while.

Pfc. Wilfred Noel Deckerd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Deckerd, of near Perry, enlisted in the Marine Corps at Kansas City and left on March 5th for

San Diego, California, where he took his boot training. Upon completion of this phase of his training Noel was transferred to the Receiving Station at Bremerton, Washington. He received his promotion to Private first class last week.

Noel is another of the 1942 graduating class of P.H.S. of who we are justly proud.

Private Chester Leake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Leake, near Perry, received his basic training at Sheppard Field, Texas, after being inducted in to the Army on April 6, 1942. He is now stationed at the Municipal Airport, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Clarence D. Meranda Jr., seaman, second class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Meranda, northwest of Perry, left the 21st of December, 1943, for the Navy. He received his boot training at Farragut, Idaho. He completed his boot training February 11, and was home on a 15-day leave. He was then transferred to Shoemaker, California and sent overseas to New Caledonia, where he is now stationed.

Private Sam J. Wise,

son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wise, southeast of Perry, was inducted into the Army December 23, 1942, at Jefferson Barracks. He was in camp in Virginia, near Richmond.

He has been in England since about the first of June in the U.S. air corps as an engineer. He was recently in London according to a letter received by his parents.

Dorsey D. Shulse Jr., son of Dorsey Shulse, Sr., of Center, and the husband of the former Gertrude Dudley, also of Center, has been recently promoted to the grade of Technical Sergeant in the Army Air Corps.

His unit, a B-24 Liberator outfit serving with the fifth Air Force, has set a record for the destruction of enemy shipping. It is known as “Ken’s Men,” and Lieut. Gen. Kenney, Commanding General of the Fifth Air Force has referred to it as “the first team.” The Fifth Air Force which has been overseas since February, 1942, and is credited with 108 ships sunk and the damaging of 150 enemy craft principally in the Bismarck Sea battle of March 1-4, 1943;

and the Papuana and New Guinea campaigns. Citations and medals awarded “Ken’s Men” to date include: Medal of Honor, 2; Distinguished Service Cross, 12; Distinguished Service medal, 1; Legion of Merit, 8; Silver Star 378; Purple Heart, 149; Soldier’s Medal, 42; Distinguished Flying Cross, 906; Air Medal, 1,366; and Presidential Citation, 1.

Sgt. Shulse enlisted November 17, 1940 and received his basic training at Jefferson Barracks and was stationed there five months. He also received training at Langley Field, Va. And Dow Field, Maine. He went overseas on February 18, 1942, and landed in Sydney, Australia. He spent a year in Australia and then went on up into New Guinea.

He has a daughter, Carolyn, past two years old, whom he has never seen.

Stanley Goss, son of Elliot Goss, of this city, enlisted on September 27, 1941, at Jefferson Barracks. He was stationed at Scott Field, Illinois, where he attended the Technical Radio College, the only air-craft radio school in

the U.S. He was graduated from the college on April 2 and is now stationed at Barksdale Field, Louisiana, where he is a member of the 93rd Bombardment Group. Stanley is a graduate of Perry High School.

Sgt. John S. Cleaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Cleaver of near Perry, was inducted into the Army on September 18, 1942. He received his training as a member of the anti-aircraft corps at Fort Bliss, Texas. He is now in non-combative service in Africa. He married Miss Margaret Miller and they have a five-months-old daughter, Bobbie Ann. Richard Glen Swon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Swon, north of Perry, was one of the first boys in this community to enlist in the Army during the present emergency.

He entered the U.S. Army November 6, 1939, and is now a Private First Class in the 7th Infantry at Camp Elliott, San Diego, California.

Obituary Myrtice I. Myers

Myrtice I. Myers, 86, of Hannibal, Missouri, passed away at 11:35 PM on Friday, November 14, 2014 at Willow Care Center in Hannibal, Missouri.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at the James O’Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. Rev. Richard Epperson will officiate. Burial will be at Fairmount Cemetery in Middletown, Missouri.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Monday, November 17, 2014 at the James O’Donnell Funeral Home.

Mrs. Myers was born October 20, 1928 in Frostproof, Florida to Joe S. and Carrie Hare Martin.

She was married to Peter J. Myers on November 7, 1944 in Vandalia, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 5, 2003.

Survivors include 4 children, Myrtice Ann Dyer of Topeka, Kansas, Robert E. Myers (Debbie) of Frankford, Missouri, Charles D. Myers (Brenda) of Hannibal,

Missouri, Beverly S. Clark of Topeka, Kansas. 14 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Barbara J. Myers, one son, Peter J. Myers Jr., two sisters, Doris Lewis, Dorothy Bailey, and one brother Charles D. Martin.

Mrs. Myers was a homemaker who enjoyed canning and gardening. She was a caregiver not only to her six children but also to many of her family members. Mrs. Myers was a member of Salem Baptist Church of Center, Missouri.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels in care of the James O’Donnell Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Richard See, Ralph See, Mark Page, John Page, Jim Null, and Ervin Null.

Honorary pallbearers will be all of Mrs. Myers nieces and nephews.

Obituary Benny D. Lehenbauer

Benny D. Lehenbauer, Sr., 64 of Ottumwa Iowa., formally of Hannibal, died November 10, 2014, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa Iowa.

He was born in Hannibal Mo on February 4, 1950.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Lehenbauer, three sons, Robert (Sheila) Lehenbauer of Fayette, Mo.; Benny (Shandra) of Ottumwa, Ia., Micheal (Shellie)

of New London; two daughters, Hazel (Phillip) Mayfield of Hannibal, and Rebecca Lehenbauer of Ottumwa Ia. One brother, Bobby (Hila) of Hannibal, and three sisters, Francis, Mary, and May (Tom) Inlow, all of Hannibal, and ten grandchildren.

No services are planned.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family in care of Reece Funeral Home.

Awards, baseball fields, and Snow Removal Discussed at New London City Council Meeting Awards, baseball fields, and snow removal preparations were topics at the New London City Council’s November 10 meeting.

Jeff Arp of MERMA recognized the New London Police Department for their 100% participation in the monthly online training and announced their award of a grant to purchase wearable cameras.

Lindsey Paxton and Roger Stout of the New London Ball Association presented concerns about the condition of the City Park baseball field. Holes in the fence, theft or damage of parts of the electrical system, and trees growing across the outfield fences were their primary concerns.

The possibility of getting grants, using prison labor, and renting the field to pay for repairs was

discussed.

Street Department manager Don Epperson reported the truck was ready for snow removal, but the truck needs a new clutch. Repairs were authorized. Culvert replacements continue.

The fire department was authorized to buy the equipment necessary to eliminate the repeater conflict with 911.

They are purchasing a 360° antenna from A&W at a cost of $300. Brian Boleach was approved to join the Fire Department. The council approved possible purchase of radios and pagers up to $500.

City Clerk Millie Powell asked if water account deposit should be raised due to the new sewer rates. The issue was added to the December meeting agenda.

Obituary Mary Virginia Beadle

Mary Virginia Beadle, 78, of Hannibal, Mo. passed away at 9:42 p.m.

Thursday, November 13, 2014, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m.

Tuesday, November 18, 2014, at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.

Dustin Gibbons will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand View Burial Park.

Visitation will be held noon until the time of the service Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.

Mary was born January 2, 1936, in Hannibal, Mo. the daughter of Albert Franklin and Margaret (Bell) Hayes. She married James Beadle on November 16, 1952, in Hannibal. He preceded her in death on February 12, 1981.

Survivors include three son, James Beadle (Karen) of Palmyra, Mo., Bruce Charles (Jonthan) of Hannibal, Mo and Terry Beadle of Bowling Green, Mo.; two daughters, Brenda Gibbons (Mike) of New London, Mo. and Christina Hudson (Richard) of Hannibal, Mo.; special cousin, Sandra Thompson of Hannibal, Mo.; fifteen grandchildren and eleven great

grandchildren.

Mrs. Beadle was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Mary enjoyed crocheting, playing bingo and spending time with her family and friends.

Mrs. Beadle was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Beadle, James Gibbons, Ryan Hudson, Austin Hudson, Garrett Crane and Adam Mitalovich.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Landon Smith, Brady Shively, Christopher Hudson and Dalton Hudson.

Obituary Harry Pierce Musgrove

Harry Pierce Musgrove, 85, of New London, Mo., passed away at 6:50 a.m. Thursday, November 13, 2014, at his home.

A Memorial Celebration will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 22, 2014, at the New London First Christian Church. Pastor Tom Day will officiate.

Visitation will be held 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church.

The family is being served by the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.

Harry was born July 18, 1929 in Hannibal, Mo. the son of Harry and Beatrice (Pierce) Musgrove, Sr. He married Ruthe Wood on April 16, 1950 in Palmyra, Mo. She survives him.

Survivors include his wife, Ruthe Musgrove of the home; two children Becky Musgrove of Hannibal, Mo. and Jim Musgrove and wife sue of Avon Park, Fl; five grandchildren, Jeanie Epperson, Steve Lewton, Matt Lewton, Kimberly Musgrove and Aaron Musgrove; and thirteen great grandchildren.

Mr. Musgrove was

preceded in death by his parents and one infant son, Steven Charles Musgrove.

Harry owned and operated the family business Musgrove Drug Store in Hannibal. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

Mr. Musgrove was a member of the St. John’s Masonic Lodge #28 AF&AM in Hannibal.

Harry also was a member of the New London First Christian Church.

Obituary

Ronald Scott (Slim) McLaughlin

Services for Ronald Scott (Slim) McLaughlin, 90, of Perry, will be held on Thursday evening at the Perry Christian Church with Reverend Dan Peters officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by Masonic service, funeral service and Military honors at the church.

Mr. McLaughlin passed away at 3 a.m., November 17, 2014 at Monroe Manor Nursing Home in Paris.

He was born February 15, 1924 in Joliet, Ill., the son of Scott and Lois Reading McLaughlin.

He was married to Flora Mae Cornelius on June 27, 1944 in Chicago, Ill. and she survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Michael (Deborah) McLaughlin of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Scott (Karen) McLaughlin of Perry, and Cory (Marla) McLaughlin of Hillsboro; seven grandchildren; and one great

grandchild.

He was preceded in death by: his twin brother, Donald McLaughlin; and two sisters, Pricilla Hahn and Rosemary Allen.

Mr. McLaughlin grew up in Illinois and moved to the area in 1958. He was a W.W.II and a Korean War veteran. He served his country honorably in the Army Air Corp from April 14, 1943 until February 25, 1946 and again from August 10, 1950 to January 29, 1953 and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the Perry Christian Church, the Perry VFW Post #4088, and a fifty year member of the Lick Creek Masonic Lodge #302. He enjoyed tinkering and visiting.

Obituary Robert Newell Moss

Robert Newell Moss, 83, of Vandalia, passed away at 1:34 a.m., November 16, 2014 at Pin Oaks Nursing Home in Mexico.

He was born March 20, 1931 in Perry, the son of John E. and Pauline Newell Moss.

He was married to Josephine Graves on June 1, 1950 in Hannibal and she survives.

Other survivors include: four sons, Monte (Teresa) Moss, James Moss, and Jack Moss, all of Vandalia, and Larry (Mary Beth) Moss of Suntana, AZ; two daughters, Donna Warden of Mexico, and Denise (David) Kemp of Vandalia; twelve grandchildren; and twenty great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: two sons, Bobby Eugene Moss and David Wayne Moss; two granddaughters, Melissa Lippelman and Brandy Ball; and one great

grandson, Nathaniel Moss.

Mr. Moss was a lifetime area resident and Christian by faith. He grew up attending Center Schools. He served in the US Army from July 2, 1952 until April 29, 1953 and attained the rank of Private Second Class. He worked at International Shoe Co., the brick plant, farmed and he and his wife owned the local motel for fourteen years. He enjoyed cattle trading and going to the casino.

Private family memorial services will be held at a later date. Bienhoff Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Our worship service began on November 16 with the choir singing “This is the Day,” accompanied by Marilyn Lucas.

Pastor Tom gave the welcome and the upcoming events. Bible study will resume on Tuesday, November 18 at 1:30p.m., led

by Marilyn Lucas. Pastor Tom will be chaplain at HRH on Thursday, November 20. Next Sunday, November 23, Thanksgiving Cheer Baskets will be prepared and delivered.

Pastor Tom led the responsive call to worship followed by the hymn of praise “Are Ye Able, Said the Master”, the invocation and Lord’s Prayer in unison. The worship hymn for today’s service was “Near To the Heart of God.” Those in need of prayer include Bud & Fern Arnold, Mandy Fleming, Linda Epperson, Linda Duniven, Diane Glascock, Dale Talley, the family of Marion Kendall, the family of Harry Musgrove, the family of Sandy (Flick) Miller, all of our men and women serving in the military and all of those who are unable to worship with us today.

The silent prayer and pastoral prayer followed.

In preparation for the Lord’s Supper, Pastor Tom gave the meditation and words of institution.

Communion hymn was “Break Thou the Bread of Life.” Serving at the Lord’s table today were Eunie Whitaker, Bryan Day, Becky Jarman and Dave Jarman. Clarence Lucas offered the elder’s prayer. The receiving of the tithes and offerings followed with Pastor Tom giving the prayer of dedication.

The scripture chosen

by Pastor Tom for today’s worship service was from Mark 1:32-35 and his message entitled “I Knelt Today Where Jesus Knelt.” If we want to walk today where Jesus walked, we need to kneel where Jesus knelt to pray. Unfortunately, many people today look at praying as something they have to do, rather than something they get to do. Jesus did not pray because he had to, he prayed because he needed to. He needed prayer for strength and for direction. We also need prayer for direction and guidance from God. The hymn of invitation was “Trust and Obey” followed by the benediction. Here at First Christian Church, we extend a warm welcome to all friends and visitors.

New Minister at Adiel Baptist Church

On September 7, 2014 Adiel Baptist Church of rural Frankford welcomed their new minister, Dustin Gilbert. He comes to Adiel from Calvary Baptist Church in Hannibal where he worked in student ministry. He and his wife , Tasha, have four children, Bode, Shalyn, Dusti Lyn and SJ. They reside in Hannibal. Pastor Dustin is the first full time pastor at Adiel Baptist since the completion of the new church, which was dedicated on June 10, 2012. The congregation held a “Welcome Dusty

and Family” weiner roast on September 20th. Adiel Baptist held their annual community fish fry on October 28th. There was a large crowd in attendance who enjoyed good food, fellowship and getting to know the new pastor and his family. Pastor Dustin has introduced the congregation to Bible study on Sunday evenings from the book, Multiply.

Adiel Baptist holds Sunday School at 9:15 am and worship service at 10:30 am each Sunday. Adiel welcomes all to come and worship.

Perry Christian Church

The Prelude was played

by Lola McDonald for the worship hour at the Perry Christian Church, November 15. The choir sang “Fairest Lord Jesus”.

Our guest minister, Jason Fleenor, gave the call to worship and announcements.

Tickets are still being sold for the quilt made by Wanda Shoemate.

The Ministerial Alliance Bake Sale will be held at city hall, November 22 along with the Home for Christmas Celebration. It is sponsored by the Baptist, St.Williams and Christian Churches. Goods should be at city hall by 8:00am.

The Harvest Feast will be held Sunday November 23 following church service. The CWF will have a cookie exchange at their meeting on December 7, 2:00pm. (all ladies welcome). An invitation was received from the Second Christian Church, New London for their program on December 6.

“My Jesus, My Savior” was sung in praise and Arlen voiced appreciation to Lola for being our pianist.

The prayer hymn was “It Is Well With My Soul”.

Our concerns include Mae and Ron McLaughlin, Gene Krigbaum, Gary Forbis, Carol Billett, Dorothy Woodhurst and the

people of Ferguson, under going a stressed and dangerous time, as well as the rest of our country. “Hear Our Prayer, O Lord” was the choir’s response.

Jason issued the invitation to share the Lord’s Supper. “Nothing But The Blood” was sung. Elders serving were Joyce Coleman and Floyd Seelow. Deacons were Jim Gay, David Lewellen and Greg Harrison.

Lola accompanied Arlen as he sang his favorite hymn, “There’s Something About That Name”.

Jeannie Gay explained to the children about the tools God gave them to use in building His Kingdom.

1 Kings 19:3-5 was read

by Caytlyn Provancha for Jason’s sermon, “The Journey”. In studying Elijah we find he was headed to see God. Building your faith by reading the bible, praying and attending church means winning the war between good and evil. With faith no matter where we go God goes beside us.

The benediction was given and we closed singing “Yesterday, Today, Forever”.

Hymn of celebration, sanctuary was followed by joys and concerns and Rev. M. Faye Vaughn offering pastoral prayer and choral response. Giving and receiving the Lord’s tithes and offerings hymn, Your Can’t Beat God’s Giving was followed by Elder Burton offering prayer.

The morning message, Don’t Be Fooled, scripture text was from Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17.

The message – Victory is remaining faithful to God. Paul reminds us to hold fast to the orthodox teachings of the faith-especially the teaching about salvation.

The message was followed by hymn of initiation, communion hymn, closing hymn, God Has Smiled on Me, and the benediction.

South Fork Prestyterian Services Sun., Nov 16 began with Patti Grimmett playing “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” on the piano with Pastor John Grimmett leading in the Call to Worship from Psalm 139 and singing to “Brethren We Have Met to Worship”, “Make Me a Channel of Blessing”, “Doxology”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Threefold Amen”.

Prayer was held for Rob Day; Hannelore Ratliff; Susie Davidson; Arla Eisenhower; Max Tilt; hunters; Bonnie Utterback; the McGee family; the Neubraugh family; the Carey family and those traveling, with all saying the Lord’s Prayer.

When Jesus comes back He will know what we did with our talents and gifts to build the kingdom - In prayer and time it seems to be easier to dig a hole than to invest your time and talent. God knows every step you take to help someone else - a parable about attitude there is a return on your investment. Jesus will ask what have you been doing to build MY kingdom?

Faded Memories

Daughter’s Book Creates Legacy From Parent’s Treasures u Continued from Page 1A homesickness and fear shared by his many brothers in arms. One letter, sent by Homer just before he left Pearl Harbor in November 1943, said, “Honey, this will probably be the last letter you get from me for a long time so don’t worry. There’s a big job to be done before I can come home to my darling wife and I’m sure coming too just as soon as this war is over…Your old man, Homer” Knudsen began the trip through time, learning about her parents as teenagers and as young newlyweds during one of the most intense times in America’s history. She shared some of her discoveries with a weekly memoir-writing group she attends. The group encouraged her with their interest in following her parents’ war story. The defining moment came when one woman said, “well, this isn’t just a war story; it’s a love story.”

With her writing club’s continued encouragement Knudsen began a five-year project that led to the book, “Sailor’s Mail.” She believes her book will touch many

people. “In some respects my parents’ war experience is personal, but in many ways their story is representative of a whole generation of everyday heroes who spent their lives trying to do the right thing.”

Knudsen is an educator, historian and public speaker who lives in Columbia, Missouri. She plans to speak to schools, clubs, historical societies, civic organizations and veterans groups to honor the World War II generation and to encourage others to become memory keepers. Her costumed historical portrayal, Memory Keepers Leave Legacies honors those brave men and women and hopes to inspire others to leave a legacy for their own families.

On Friday, November 14, the second bridge on Rt. B, approximately three miles south of Perry, opened to the public. The bridge was the second of two bridges on that stretch of road that have been repaired in recent months.

Missouri Livestock Symposium Includes Topics Firearms opening weekend deer harvest of Interest for Sheep and Meat Goat Producers tops 91,000, up by

The Missouri Livestock Symposium has announced their sheep and meat goat section speakers and topics for 2014. The program will be held December 5-6 with all of the sheep and meat goat programs held on December 6th. The Missouri Livestock Symposium is held in Kirksville, Missouri at the William Mathew Middle School formerly Kirksville Middle School. The event also features an agriculture-related trade show, a classic tractor display, a free beef dinner on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. and a free Governor’s Style Luncheon on Saturday at noon. There is no pre-registration required and there is no cost to attend.

Dr. Clifford-Rathert will also be featured in the Meat Goat section discussing “Diseases of Concern During Pregnancy and Kidding.”

Top harvest counties were Franklin, Howell, and Callaway.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports that hunters checked 91,460 deer during the opening weekend of the 2014 November Portion of Firearms Deer Season this past weekend. Top harvest counties for the opening weekend were Franklin with 1,839 deer checked, Howell with 1,793, and Callaway with 1,791.

Last year’s firearms opening weekend deer harvest was 61,446. Other recent prior-year harvest totals for firearms opening weekend were: 2012: 69,614; 2011: 89,728, 2010: 97,856, and 2009: 86,202.

MDC also reports that there were three deer-hunting incidents over the weekend with two being fatal. One fatality was in Ste. Genevieve County where a heater in a hunting blind exploded, killing the hunter. The second involved a fall from a tree stand in Crawford County. A third non-fatal incident involved a hunter in Phelps County shooting himself in the leg while loading his rifle.

Making Your Voice Heard Now that the elections are over, people may be wondering what is next for lawmakers in Jefferson City. In a way, I am too, but I will not be alone.

Each year, my office puts together an opportunity for anyone in the 18th Senatorial District to give me ideas on those things they believe should be considered by the Missouri General Assembly, and this year is no different.

If you go to my Missouri Senate Web page, senate. mo.gov/Munzlinger, you will see a wide variety of options and ways to stay in touch with me. On the left-hand side of the page — under the “E-mail the Senator” and “Sign Up for E-News” tabs — you will see the tab called “Submit a Budget or Legislation Suggestion.” This is where you come in.

Under this tab, there

are several options. If someone is in favor of adding funding to one department or another, he or she is asked where this money should come from. An increase in one program means a decrease to another. In the ShowMe State, we balance the budget every year and only spend on the most important services for the people of our state.

In addition, constituents are asked to explain why they believe one department should have more funding than the other. This helps us greatly, in terms of having the ability to see what it is the voters of our district want, and why.

Below this is a section asking what types of legislation people believe would best serve Missouri, or what laws are on the books that may need some

changing. These are the questions that lawmakers ask themselves all the time, and are among the reasons why people run for office.

The opportunity to fill out this online survey continues from this week through the end of the year. Our next legislative session is only weeks away, and I am anxious to start prefiling bills that I think will help not only the 18th Senatorial District, but the entire state. The regular legislative session that was held this year yielded several major pieces of legislation, but we also saw some setbacks. I want to hear your perspective on what is working and what is not.

First half of October wet enough to set record

A lot of rain fell on Missouri the first half of October. The second half was, thankfully, dry.

Several counties in central Missouri had more than 10 inches of rain.

After that wet start, a pattern change turned off the tap and fairer weather dominated the last half of October. Even with drier conditions for the second half, the precipitation for the entire month was above normal.

Rain stopped harvest for much of October and farmers were unable to return to their fields until the final days of the month, Guinan said.

While the rain did slow the harvest, it brought one great benefit, relief from the drought.

October temperatures were not as extreme as precipitation, but there were some highs. Guinan says on Oct. 25-26 temperatures climbed to the mid- and upper-80s. The monthly temperatures

averaged slightly above normal.

“With the exception of a cool July and September, slightly above-average temperatures dominated this year’s growing season, so it was a decent growing season when you look at temperatures,” Guinan said.

Missouri saw its first widespread freeze on Halloween night, with temperatures dipping into the 20s and 30s. Guinan says that effectively ended the 2014 growing season.

COMMUNITY NEWS Korner Bar Undergoes Facelift, Still Offers Menu Favorites

Patti O’Brien, proprietor of New London’s Korner Bar has recently refurbished and remodeled her establishment with kitchen equipment upgrades, new exhaust fans, and cleaner environment. Her menu still provides a full line of

steaks, chops, and burgers. She has daily lunch and dinner specials and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Korner Bar is located at the south end of Business Hwy 61 in New London.

Missouri State University Monthly Calendar of Events: December 2014 Dec. Through-19 Missouri State University libraries will present the Exhibit: The Normal Heart “A Look Back to 1989” weekdays from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. at Meyer Library, Room 306. In 1989 a firestorm erupted on the then Southwest Missouri State University (now MSU) campus when the theatre and dance department planned to produce “The Normal Heart,” a play by Larry Kramer.

Using archival materials preserved in special collections, this exhibit looks back at the controversy.

Among the items on display, visitors will see photographs, media coverage, petitions and many of the hundreds of letters, both for and against, that were sent to SMSU President Marshall Gordon. Tenth Judicial Circuit Court To Receive Awards Judge Rachel Bringer shepherd announces that the Tenth Judicial Circuit will be receiving awards from the Missouri Supreme Court on November 26 Judge Rachel Bringer Shepherd has announced that the Tenth Judicial Circuit will be receiving the O’Toole and Permanency awards from the Missouri Supreme Court on November 26, 2014, at 12:00 p.m. at the Ralls County Courthouse in New London, Missouri. The awards will be presented to the Circuit for efficiently managing and processing cases during fiscal year 2013. The Tenth Judicial Circuit includes Ralls, Marion, and Monroe Counties. The awards will be presented by Missouri Supreme Court Judge Richard Teitelman and Missouri State Court Administrator Gary Waint.

The awards will be presented to Judge Rachel Bringer Shepherd, Judge David Mobley, Judge Michael P. Wilson, Judge John J. Jackson, the Tenth Circuit Juvenile Office, and Circuit Clerks Gina Jameson, Carolyn Conners, Valerie Munzlinger, and Heather Wheeler. Representatives of the Children’s Division, Court Appointed Special Advocates, and the Tenth Circuit Bar Association will also be participating in the presentation.

The Tenth Circuit is one of only four circuits throughout the state to meet all ten of the ten time standards measured by the Missouri Supreme Court for timely and efficient case management in fiscal year 2013. The Circuit also ranked first in the state for timely disposition of felony criminal cases and domestic relations cases. The Tenth Circuit received both awards for Fiscal Year 2011 and Fiscal Year 2012, and is one of only two circuits in the state to meet all ten time standards for achievement for the past three consecutive years.

Judge Shepherd said, “The awards are the result of cooperation and diligence by Tenth Circuit Court personnel and members of the Tenth Circuit Bar Association, and I am very grateful for their hard work and continuous effort.”

Perry Christian Academy Visits Amish Community The 7th & 8th grade classes at Perry Christian Academy had the opportunity to visit the Clark Amish Community for their fall field trip. Some of their day’s activities included going to the L.L. L. Bakery where they were able to purchase many wonderful sweets. Mr. and Mrs. Beachy gave a tour at their farm on how sorghum is made. They students were able to experience firsthand how sorghum is pressed and cooked in the large vat. Samples were also a treat for the students.

The students had the privilege of visiting a school and shopping at Vernie’s Country Store, as well as Lefty’s Country Store. Our day ended by enjoying a picnic along with some homemade bread and spreads, and time to admire the scenery of the beautiful countryside.

On Saturday November 8th, the MT Lady Tiger XC team, along with boys team member Devin Neff, traveled to the Mis-

souri State XC Meet held at Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City. It was an amazing day in MT XC history! It was a windy day, temperatures were in the low-50’s, and the sun was shining. And here we were, at the state XC championships, with the best of the best. We had nothing to lose and everything to gain. There were almost 200 runners in each race division.

It was the largest race crowd our runners have started up against, ever.

Their nerves were high and the excitement was undeniably hard to control.

Devin, went down Friday afternoon to check out the course in order to prepare. They all felt confident about the course and thought they could get 5K times that were close, or better, than what they usually ran. They only had 3 challenges on this race meet day: the course, the other athlete’s competing against them on this course, and they had to challenge themselves on this course. They knew they had to leave it all on the course, hold nothing back. Kaelee Ogle set an individual PR (personal record), which is rare for the state meet race. The others were not far from their own personal best race times. They all ran well! I am very proud of their accomplishments this inaugural XC season.

What they have achieved this season was far more than I, or even they, ever expected.

All season long, all of my XC athlete’s demonstrated desire, commitment, self-discipline, hard work, and responsibility. They each put in the effort to be successful in this sport, and did so as a team. They each had goals; to medal, to score points for the team, qualify for an individual honor, qualify as a team for an important race later on, or just to have fun! Regardless of what that goal was, they each gained something positive from this experience.

Jeff Johnson said it best, “They don’t know it yet -and they certainly don’t understand it -- but the sport they have chosen will never leave them. It will lead them down avenues of achievement and success that they cannot yet imagine.”

Creating Original Music Project (C.O.M.P.) celebrates tenth year of prizes, recognition for Missouri student composers Over the past nine years, the Mizzou New Music Initiative’s Creating Original Music Project (C.O.M.P) has encouraged the musical dreams and aspirations of hundreds of K-12 students across Missouri.

Now for its tenth year, the annual statewide competition sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Music and the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation once again is looking for new, original music from student composers and songwriters in the Show-Me State.

Information was mailed last month to music teachers across the state inviting students to participate in the 2015 competition.

The winning composers and their schools will be awarded cash prizes, and the winning com-

Crop Management Conference adds ‘big data’ to 33 other farming issues

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Crop Management Conference in Columbia, Dec. 17-18, starts the University of Missouri winter meetings.

Farmers and their crop advisers will find 33 sessions on research and practical advice. Topics include cover crops, nutrients, pests, and soil and water. The crops include grain, oilseed and forages.

The latest extension and research are included from the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.

Speakers also come from other land-grant universities.

“Big data” is the topic for keynote speaker Scott Shearer. He calls it “A Grower’s Most Elusive Farm Asset.” He’s from Ohio State University.

The conference packs in topics that will be heard later in meetings across the state. “This is the starting place,” says conference leader Kevin Bradley, MU associate professor of plant science.

This year Bradley adds professional development. That includes “Social Media Mistakes You Can Avoid.”

Returnees come to hear the basics, he adds.

Most popular are updates from MU Extension on new crop pests found last season. Controls are explained. Also, specialists give alerts on potential problems next year.

The Alliance for Grassland Renewal will update progress on replacing toxic fescue in pastures. They will tell of planting novel-endophyte fescue varieties.

An urgent topic will be caring for stored grains. The big crop in 2014 adds importance to this.

Other topics: nitrogen management, beneficial insects in crops and forages, when to spray fungicides for best return, biomass energy, efficient

waters use, and more.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced a cut-off date of December 19 to apply for funds through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).

Funding is available for general EQIP, as well as On-Farm Energy, Seasonal High Tunnel, and Organic initiatives.

EQIP helps producers of agricultural products

Center Elementary Celebrates Moms and Veterans Center Elementary has been a busy place in the past two weeks. Students raised over two hundred dollars with their decorated pumpkin contest, sponsored by the Student Leadership group. The money was given to the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

On November 6 students hosted their annual Muffins with Moms.

Before classes began students met with their mothers in the gym for muffins, juice and a little pre-class bonding time.

A celebration of Veterans Day was held on November 11. Students presented a skit on the meaning of “veteran.”

Afterwards a slide show was shown. Students were asked to bring in military pictures of fam-

ily members who had or currently serve in the military. Their name, rank and years of service were displayed with their pictures. At the assembly’s conclusion each veteran in attendance was called to the stage and given a packet of “mail,” thank you cards written by students.

Navigators Will Serve As Local Resource for New Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollees

Catherine Edwards, executive director of the Missouri Association of Area Agencies on Aging (MA4), today announced that the Missouri Association of Area Agencies on Aging (MA4) is ready to assist Missourians who choose to obtain health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Open enrollment for the program started November 15, 2014.

MA4 was named as an official Health Insurance Marketplace “Navigator” organization for the second straight year by the Department of Health and Human Services earlier this year. MA4 will incorporate its network of Area Agencies on Aging and senior centers throughout the state to help people make informed decisions when choosing among health insurance coverage options offered through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

According to Edwards, individuals and small businesses will once again be able to shop for health insurance coverage through the Health

Insurance Marketplace in a variety of ways including online, in-person, by phone and at events and locations established by partner organizations during the open enrollment period.

For individuals wishing to explore new insurance options in person MA4 has established eight regional information centers in all parts of the state. Additional events will also be hosted throughout the state during the open enrollment period.

Under the Health Insurance Marketplace system, affordable health insurance policies will be offered by multiple private insurance providers with tiered cost options.

Coverage cannot be denied due to pre-existing conditions and many preventive health care services are provided under terms of the policies offered in the Marketplace.

The system is designed to help currently uninsured Missourians find affordable health insurance options for themselves and their families.
