Daughter’s Book Creates Legacy From Parent’s Treasures When most people think of World War II, a vast array of images and memories come to mind. Depending on your age, you envision the forties in flashes of music, movies and war posters. Some are lucky enough to have heard rare first-hand accounts from the soldiers themselves. Others remember the stories told by the friends and loved ones left behind. Then there are the archived photos, letters, old uniforms and faded scrapbooks. Those who had access to these treasures were the really lucky ones. Much more powerful and poignant than any book or magazine, they tell a single story; one leaf in the vast book of recorded history. Marsha Knudsen is one of the lucky ones. Her parents, Ruth and Homer Norris were Ralls County natives and were married for 63 years. After her parents’ deaths in 2005 and 2008 she began a slow journey of discovery when she opened an old steamer trunk. Inside was priceless historical treasure. Bundles of air mail letters tied with ribbon nestled among diaries and journals. A sectioned box held a ring with an “N” engraved on it and a golden locket marked with a flowing, cursive “R.” Knudsen didn’t remember her father talking much about his war experiences. He and Ruth were newlyweds when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. His sailor’s letters chronicled the physical demands,

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA

The local Toys For Tots is hosting Breakfast with Santa from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 29 at the Legion at 3819 Hwy. MM in Hannibal. The meal includes a pancake breakfast and a visit from Santa. Tickets are $5 for persons over age 6 and $3 for persons 5 and under. Tickets can can be purchased at Douglass Community Services, 711 Grand Ave., Hannibal or by calling 573-221-3892 ext. 247. All toys and money collected will remain in the local area. Anyone interested in holding a toy drive or making a donation should contact RSVP at the number above.

For the last few years, the residents of Ralls County have enjoyed a true Celebration of the birth of Christ during the Spirit of Christmas Dinner. This year is no exception. We invite everyone in Ralls County out to take part in this relaxing atmosphere. Come, fellowship, relax and enjoy this wonderful event. RELAY FOR LIFE MEETING SCHEDULED

Laura Leake, Ralls County Relay for Life Event Lead, has scheduled the first planning meeting for Friday, November 21, at 5:30 p.m. at her home. Her address is 18909 Hwy 19.
