BCMH gathers for Angel Tree Barton County Memorial Hospital employees gathered names of employees that were in need, as well as others that helped to fulfill those wishes. Employees helped over 20 kids and nine families this year.
Barton County Memorial Hospital Food Drive was a huge success The Barton County Memorial Hospital Food Drive, collecting food for the Good Samaritan Shop, collected an unbelievable 3,000 pounds with the winner being Liberal Schools. Liberal Schools raised 1,157 pounds of food, receiving bragging rights for the 2013 food drive. Second place went to Barton County Memorial Hospital with 798 pounds and third place went to Butler Meats with 248 pounds. Thanks are extended to those that participated in this year’s event, helping to double the collections from last year. Others assisting with the drive included Heritage State Bank, Thorco, Lamar Band Boosters, Lamar United Methodist Church, Larry Roland, Friendship Needle Club, First Baptist Church, Newport Church and Milford Church.
Dates set for 2014 Mid-Missouri Collectors Show MINDENMINESDave Sorrick of In God We Trust LLC has announced that the 2014 Mid-Missouri Collectors Show will be held on March 21 through March 23, at the Inn at Grand Glaize, 5142 Osage Beach Pkwy., Osage Beach. The three day weekend event will feature coins, currency, precious metals, stamps, postcards, sports cards, memorabilia and comics. The public is invited to attend and to buy, sell or trade with the vendors present. It is a free admission event and free appraisals will be offered. “I am delighted to bring our event to the Lake of Ozarks in early spring of 2014,” stated Dave Sorrick, promoter of the event. “The Mid-Missouri Collectors Show is a family friendly hobby event where collectors can add to their collections, sell unwanted items and browse the many small collectibles present at the show,” he added. The show opens to the public at 2 p.m. on Friday and closes at 5 p.m. that day. On Saturday the event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show continues on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free on all three days. Winter concert performed at hospital
Barton County Memorial Hospital held a winter concert on Monday afternoon, Dec. 30, as employees and patients gathered in the piano area. The concert featured talent from hospital employees and their families. Left, Ryan Moore entertained the crowd with the Nutcracker. Patricia Roerig organized the event. Snacks were enjoyed following the concert.
BCMH Board centers discussion on budgets The Barton County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees met December 30, with the meeting called to order by Vice Chairperson Jill Purinton. Other members present were Tom Shaw, Mike Vaughan and Mike Buchanan. Karen Wegener was absent. Also in attendance were CEO/CFO
Wendy Duvall, Human Resources Director Sheila Boice, Director of Quality/Risk Management Eden Ogden and Physician Practice Manager Michelle Casey. Guests were Chief of Medical Staff Dr. Thomas Hopkins and Mandy Swink, FNP, from Golden City. The minutes of the Novem-
ber 25 meeting were approved as read. Casey reported that overall statistics for November were down compared to previous years. Cardiac Rehab and All Therapy visit modalities were up. Duvall reported that November had a gain for the month of $413,635, with a net gain year to date of $1,218,868.
Meaningful use payments are the reason for the gains. The clinics were up again as they have been for the past five months. Buchanan pointed out that the clinics were doing very well. Boice reported that only see BUDGETS, page 3
Early filings for area public offices By RICHARD COOPER Democrat staff writer richardcooper@ lamardemocrat.com Early filings for public offices to be filled in the April 8 municipal election have been slow to appear, suggesting a large number of candidacies to be declared as the January 21 deadline for filing grows closer. In Lamar, one seat is to be filled in each of the four wards. So far, only three incumbents have filed, Steve Gilkey in Ward 2, Joey Bronson in Ward 3, and Harold VanDeMark in Ward 4. No one has declared in Ward 1. Lamar Heights will fill one seat in each of its two wards. So far, no one has filed. Liberal will be electing a mayor and an alderman in each of its two wards. To date, two candidates have filed for the Ward 2 seat, Connie Fast King and Carolyn M. Mayfield. Neither is an incumbent. Golden City will elect a mayor and three aldermen. The only declaration of candidacy has come from incumbent mayor Henry Lopez. Mindenmines will elect two persons to its at-large board of aldermen. No one has filed to date. The village of Milford must fill three seats for two-year terms
on its board of trustees. It must also fill the remaining one year of an unexpired term, created by a resignation. No one has filed for any of the seats. Sheldon has two seats on its at-large board of aldermen that must be filled. One person has filed, incumbent Cheryl Bogart. Lockwood has had one person to declare for each of its two wards. Lou Ann Dennis has filed in the East Ward, and Dennis Bench has filed in the West Ward. Neither is an incumbent. Greenfield will be electing a mayor and two aldermen. James Evans has filed for the office of mayor, and Clara Murray has declared for the North Ward. No one has filed for the South Ward seat. Two county boards have seats that must be filled, one on the Barton County Memorial Hospital board and two on the Barton County Ambulance board. Incumbents have filed for all of them, Karen Wegener for the hospital board, Cheryl Wood for district 3 of the ambulance board and Bob Holt for district 6 of that board. Filings for area boards of education have been limited due to shortened hours of administrative offices during the Christmas and New Years break. This is the year that three seats must
be filled on boards of education in Missouri. In Lamar R-I, four persons have filed; three of them are incumbents, Arty Torbeck, Charles Winslow, and Kurt Swartz. The fourth person to file is Justin Ogden. Golden City R-III also reports four candidates. Ryan Seela and
Sterling Moore are incumbents, and the other two are Brandi Freezinburg and Chris Peterson. The only other school district in the immediate area to report filings is Jasper R-V, where Cassie Flenniken and Larry Sisseck have filed. Neither is an incumbent.

Concrete culverts, one bid from Stewart Concrete of Nevada. Polymer coated metal culverts, three bids, lowest
from Viebrock Sales of Sedalia. Crane work, no bids. Bulldozer work, one bid, Kinney Construction of Lamar. Track hoe work, no bids. Pre-cast bridges, one bid, Oden Enterprises, Wahoo, Neb. Bulk diesel fuel, no bids. Road rock, no bids. Rock hauling, one bid, Chip Miller of Lamar, hauling based on availability and work site. Medical and psychological services for county jail, one bid, Complete Quick Care of Carthage. Full prisoner food service, no bids. In the categories where no bids were received, the commission will have to negotiate with suppliers for the best price.
