Heart of Missouri Gymnastics Competition

Reva Graham La Plata, MO Heroes Way

On Saturday, February 1st, CW2 Michael Blaise of Macon will be honored for the ultimate sacrifice he made while serving his country in Iraq.

Michael was a pilot in the United States Army and was killed in action while flying over northern Iraq in January 2004. A ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Colonel Blees Armory in Macon to dedicate the interchange on U.S. 63 in Macon as “Heroes Way” in Michael’s name. The ceremony will include the unveiling of one of the signs that will be placed on the roadway. The public is invited to attend.

The Heroes Way designation program was established in 2009 to honor those Missouri residents in the armed forces who were killed in action on or after September 11, 2001 in either Iraq or in Afghanistan.

Public Meeting

A public information meeting will be held at La Plata City Hall located at 113 S Gex, La Plata Missouri on January 31, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. to discuss a loan/grant application for a track loader to be purchased by La Plata Promotional Committee. The loan and grant combination is through the USDA Rural Development. Anyone with questions or comments should feel free to attend.

Severe Weather Training

Severe Weather Spotter Training and Awareness Night February 10th at 7PM, Expo Center, Macon The training will start at 7PM. Guests will include forecasters from the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, MO as well as Macon County Emergency Management Director, Michael Shively speaking about new warning capabilities upcoming for the Office of Emergency Management.

The Long Branch Area YMCA Gymnastics Team attended the second Heart of Missouri Gymnastics Competition of the season at Jefferson City on January 18, 2014. The team was split into two groups and competed separately due to the vast number of gymnasts attending each competition. Danielle Theurer coaches the team with assistance from Hannah Hartung and Jeana Noel. The team competed in four events against six additional teams from across the state and earned recognition in all levels. Team competitors include Madie Ewing, competing in Level 4, taking 3rd place on uneven bars, 2nd place on vault and 1st places on balance beam and floor. Madie also took 1st place in her level/age group for her “All Around” score. Elise Nelson of Macon, competing in Level 3, earned 2nd places in the events of vault and floor, 3rd places in the events of uneven bars and balance beam and took 2nd place for her “All Around” score for her level/age group. Millie Gough of Shelbina, competed in Level 3 earning 2nd places on balance beam, uneven bars and floor, 1st place on vault and took 2nd place for her “All Around” score for her level/age group. Jaley Hayes of Macon, competing in Level 3, took 2nd place on vault and 1st place on floor in her level/age group. Jarah Wilt of Shelbina, also competed in Level 3 and took 3rd place on floor for her level/age group. Heart of Missouri Gymnastics Competition

Continued from Page 1A Theurer said 90% of the girls improved their overall scores in comparison to their first competitive meet in December. Theurer also noted many of the team participants are first year competitors including Brooke Weimer, Nelson, Maples, Fanning,

Fouch and Anderson. Returning team members are Emma Blackford (2nd year), Gough (2nd year), Hayes (2nd year), Wilt (2nd year) and Ewing (4th year).

In the Summer of 2013, the levels and skills of USA Gymnastics were re-

organized for a more comprehensive progression of skills and all new routines were created for the 20132021 competitive years.

In doing so, the technical difficulty of skills for each level increased meaning Level 3 skills in former years are now considered

Level 2 skills and so on.

The Long Branch Area YMCA Gymnastics team will compete again on February 15, 2014 in Chillicothe with an additional competitions to take place in April and the Heart of Missouri Gymnastics Finals in May.

Northeast Missouri Rural Health Network assists with Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment.

There is still time to sign up for coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace to avoid a penalty.

Licensed navigators from the Northeast Missouri Rural Health Network will be conducting a free information session for anyone interested in learning more about the Health Insurance Marketplace on Monday, February 3rd from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the

LaPlata Methodist Church located at 214 North Gex Street in LaPlata.

The Affordable Care Act requires that Americans obtain health insurance by 2014 or pay a tax penalty.

The penalty will be applied to annual taxable income for each month a qualified health plan is not obtained after open enrollment ends March 31, 2014. Based on household income and size, applicants may be eligible for financial assistance with lowering cost of premiums through tax

credits and cost sharing, or enrollment in Medicaid.

All health plans within the Marketplace must offer an essential set of benefits, and individuals cannot be denied coverage based on a pre-existing condition. Some of the available health benefits include preventive care and wellness services, doctor visits, prescription drugs, hospital and emergency department care, lab services, pediatric services – and more.

The Northeast Missouri

Rural Health Network has licensed patient navigators ready to provide FREE assistance to people who want more information, lack access to a computer or just need help maneuvering the enrollment website. Aid is offered at no charge to individuals and families to evaluate available health plan options or determine Medicaid eligibility.

Please make time to come view the “Remembering Our Fallen” photo exhibit, currently on display at the Macon Public Library through January 30th.

“Remembering Our Fallen,” is a touring photo display honoring the over 140 Missouri military members who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, since September 11, 2001.

Travis Grove Chosen as 4-H Senior Ambassador Pictured is Travis Grove, who was chosen as the Adair County 4-H Senior Ambassador at the 4-H Recognition Night January 18, 2014. His 4-H project included Sportsfishing 1, 2, 3. He was also selected to attend Missouri 4-H Congress June 2014 at Columbia, MO. Virgie Engle played the piano. Those attending were Isabel Hutcherson, Grace Killen, Blanche Hoffman, Dorothy Dee Daniel, Lou Ann Taylor, Jim Hill, Darrell McDowell, Frank & Martha Mason, Helen Griswold, Rhian Beldon, and Larry Vaughn. This afternoon, Bill Bevan

came out and read to the residents.

The Friendship Design class met Monday. They celebrated the month of January by making some really cute snowmen.

Our incredible Bingo volunteers, Linda Barton, Helen Sinklear, Delores Burmeister, Mary Lee Gingrich, and Margaret Lathrom were here this afternoon to play the residents’ favorite game.

Bird Watching From the trash in my workshop, I rescued two old bird feeders. Our home sits amid many trees. That is great for a birdwatcher like me. However, trees attract other creatures as well as birds. We are overrun with squirrels. They are not satisfied with robbing the bird feeders; they regularly gnaw on our house. I have spent countless hours and money repairing the damage they wreak. In exasperation, several years ago I removed the bird feeders. It did not help. The squirrels remained, but the birds left. Realizing my plan failed, I have restored the feeders; and the birds are beginning to return.

Sitting in my living room watching the birds at the feeders, I ask myself, “What have you learned from this?” I‘ve learned there is a down side to most everything. If I want to enjoy the birds, I must repair and fill the feeders.

It also helps to keep the birdbath full—a not too easy task in cold weather.

My experience with the bird feeders also has some pleasant memories. One of those feeders was a gift.

Each time I look at it, I remember the giver and am thankful both for the giver and for the birds the gift brings.

Many of life’s blessings come as gifts. Most of us like to think we have earned our blessings.

We often hear and say,

“I worked hard for this.”

Sometimes those words are true; but far more often, we are blessed through the touch of someone else.

Life itself is a gift from someone else. People often think of themselves as a self-made man or woman; but no one is selfmade. Physically, we are the product of our parents.

Spiritually, we are gifts from God. Even heaven is a gift. Humankind regularly seeks to earn a place in heaven.

Usually our striving takes the form of keeping score, i.e. doing more good things than bad—tipping the scale to the side of good. The Bible tells us that doesn’t work. To earn your way into heaven, you would need to live a perfect life; and none of us do. No, heaven (salvation) is a gift of God—not something you earn by being “as good as you can.”

(Ephesians 2:8) There is yet another issue I realize as I watch the bird feeders—God knows every sparrow that falls and He also knows me.

Thank you, God.

The grand prize winners were Lou Ann, Norma, and Mary Jane. The residents thoroughly enjoyed an evening of Name That Tune with Susan Bentley.

Virgie and Darrell were able to name every tune!

Holly and the residents played the Nintendo Wii Tuesday, then in the afternoon everyone celebrated the January birthdays.

Holly served cake and ice cream while the birthdays of Martha Mason and Isabel Hutcherson were celebrated.

Wednesday, Holly and the residents played the card game, War. Martha Mason won the most games.

Janice Wilson visited us Thursday with tons of crafting supplies for the residents to make heart wall hangings for their rooms. They turned out so beautiful! Holly and the residents played the card game, SkipBo this afternoon. Helen Griswold won the most games.

Clark Dobbs, from the Macon First Baptist Church, led Bible study Friday. The study title was “Is Every Life Sacred?” Scripture was read from Psalm 139:1-6, 1318. Ronnie Shores came

by Saturday and shared his collection of music and story cd’s with the residents. During Movie Time with Darrell this afternoon, the residents watched “Boys Of The Road”.

We are extremely grateful this week for our friends and family and this amazing community we live in!

The Adair County Member and Leader Recognition Night was held January 18, 2014 at the Kirksville Middle School.

About 125 members and families attended the event. The Oklahoma Indians 4-H club won the following honors: Secretary’s book got a gold seal, Treasurer’s book got a silver seal, Scrapbook got a gold seal and Service to Community a gold award. Travis Grove was selected as the Senior 4-H Ambassador.

Tanner Smith got red in 3-D archery compound, American 600 compound (white). Travis Grove got a Sports fishing medal, Trista Smith got a Poultry medal, a Foods Certificate,

and Arts and Crafts Certificate.

Madison Taylor got a bowling medal, Photography medal and Geology medal.

Julie Smith received a 5 year volunteer award, and Sharron Burns was awarded a 15 year volunteer certificate and pin.

Membership completion pins were awarded to Travis Grove, Ben Larson, Molly West, Justin Grove, Sarah Larson, Madison Taylor, Elizabeth Larson, Trista Smith, Matt Lewis, Tanner Smith, Makenzie Beautte and Skylar Rhodes.

A Clover Kid award went to first year Caden Taylor.

Madison Taylor won the Loyal Anderson Memorial

Achievement Award. The United Way Scholarship went to Trista Smith and Madison Taylor. Travis Grove won the State 4-H Congress Scholarship.

James Allen Grove was selected to be the outstanding 2013 Project leader award.

Members Travis Grove, Madison Taylor, MaKenzie Beautte and Justin Grove were also Master of Ceremonies at this event. COMMUNITY NEWS Macon County Historical Society Minutes President Ron Watts opened the meeting at the Exposition Center with a welcome to everyone attending.

Darla Dwiggins led the Pledge of Allegience.

George Morgenweck led the group in prayer, observing a moment of silence for deceased past members and deceased veterans.

The Christmas Banquet was served at 6:00 pm by Nolan’s Catering. Tables were decorated by Ruth Masten with festive centerpieces.

Ella Anne Jaeger (aka Merlyn Amidei) arrived at the meeting dressed in a black and white outfit with black shawl and a luxurious feathered hat (designed by Mary Kay Lampe and patterned after an actual photograph) to give an entertaining and informative account of her life in Macon City, Missouri.

Born in Ohio in 1863, she never saw her father as he had gone to fight with the Union before she was born and never came home. Her mother decided three years later that Ella Anne was getting to be school age, so sold the farm and moved to town, sewing and cooking to make a living.

In 1877, the mother died from fever, leaving Ella Anne an orphan at 14. She had been doing well at school, but when Joe Jaeger, 28, asked her to marry him, she did. They traveled by horse and buggy, following the Ohio River to the Mississippi, and most likely followed the Glacier Trail from St. Charles, Missouri, on to Macon City.

Joe’s parents welcomed them. For Thanksgiving, they hunted turkey or deer.

That year, there was no turkey, no deer.

But they did get two rabbits, one squirrel, and a possum which was steamed with huckleberries, sweet potatoes, and cabbage (her mother’s).

Jaeger Brothers Hardware Store had supplied the Union Army, and after the war the business grew to become the largest hardware store in northeast Missouri. It’s location is Jaeger’s Coffee House today.

Ella Anne Jaeger continued to give many more interesting historical details about her life and Macon City.

Minutes of the last meeting were approved as read.

Ruth Masten, Treasurer, gave the treasurer’s report with the sources of funds as follows: Membership Dues, Garage Sales,

Donations, Genealogy Department Fees Expenses included the following: Utilities, Media Advertising The Treasurer’s report was approved as read.

DONATIONS Sally Watts thanked all the donors for time, money, and historical items. These include but are not limited to the following: Ted Clardy – six large trash barrels; newspapers dated from the 1890’s.

Shriners district: Daisy Tabor donated several items including a fancy Shriner’s hat.

Graves Chapel – a Bible and miscellaneous Large George Washington portrait donated by Daisy Tabor.

Opal and Robert Harris – donated her grandmother’s dresser Dudley Family - Two China-faced dolls and two Iron-faced dolls and other items Leroy Teeter – the Blees sleigh MODot – Oak Cabinet Donna and Gene McClanahan donated a picture of the Major Thomas Moody home. He switched the court house from Bloomington to Macon City.

Don Noah donated a Home Comfort cook stove.

Victor Williams Estate donated a military uniform and genealogical information of the Ethel and New Cambria areas.

Included in the donation is Victor Williams diary as a WWII soldier. He wrote in his diary most of the days of the war.

The family of Leon Oberto, a Navy gunner, donated many military items.

Bill Franke donated all glass negatives, 1200 more or less, 3” x 4,” 5” x 7’”, and 8” x 10,” all sizes.

Sally Watts observed, “It takes every one of us to make this museum what it is.”

ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2013 Jan Watts reported that the Military Room now has 600 names and pictures.

Military programs recognizing veterans included May’s Gold Star Families (those who lost family members in the war).

GOALS FOR 2014 Robert Vickers, Sr., a POW in Germany may be giving a program in the spring.

New projects in the basement are being planned and calls will be going out for volunteers.

Esther Tabor volunteered to cut obituaries out of the Macon Chronicle Herald. She will keep the book updated on a monthly basis.

President Watts noted that volunteers holding flags along the highway to honor the veterans when a funeral procession is passing is deeply appreciated by the families.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS President Watts asked for nominations or volunteers for MCHS officers for 2014.

The consensus was to keep the current officers. President Watts asked each officer if he or she would be willing to serve again. Vice-President Harold Burkhardt could not attend but had said earlier he would so serve if needed.

The following officers were elected by acclimation:

RAFFLE AND AUCTION President Watts had Ruth Masten draw the lucky raffle tickets from a basket held high above her head. The winner could choose one of four prizes: A picture of the Macon County Historical Society Museum ; a book; $20 gift certificate from the Chamber of Commerce; a surprise envelope containing an offer of a fishing trip guided by President Ron Watts, or a limit of crappie dressed and ready to fry.

The winners: #98188 – Charlie Burkhard (who declined the book saying he already had a book) chose the $20 gift certificate. #98080 – Jan Watts did want the book #98338 – George Morgenweck chose the President’s gift of the fishing trip or dressed limit of crappie.

98223 – The picture of the Still-Hildrith Museum- which was offered for auction with the proceeds going to the Macon Couinty Historical Society.

Charley Burkhardt then jumped into action with his inimitable auctioneering style to auction the picture (and entertain the audience) which went for $55 to Doris Duckworth.

Next, Charley donated and then auctioned the $20 gift certificate for $55, again to Doris Duckworth.

Ralph Klusman thanked Doris Duckworth for opening her cabin for the “Lunch with Jack” to the now good-sized group attending on the second Wednesday of the month.

President Watts adjourned the meeting.

Joe Koenen, Agri-Business Specialist Annie’s Project - Farm Management for Women – Classes Coming Women have always played a large role in agriculture. They drive tractors and combines, haul grain, cook supper, and take care of their families.

In recent years, women are becoming more involved in the business operations of the farm. Farm women have diverse backgrounds, some which prepare women well for the responsibilities of running a farm business. Other farm women come into farming operations by way of marrying men who happen to be farmers, or by means of their spouse or family members dying and leaving them in charge. Being married to a farmer or being a woman in a male dominated business has its challenges. Some women have learned to handle this responsibility very well and are valuable mentors to women who have not had it so easy.

Annie’s Project is an educational program that was

created specifically for farm women. Topics include: risk management, estate planning, leases, record keeping software, ownership of property, insurance, financial statements, spreadsheets, writing a business plan, communication issues, personality traits, and marketing. The course will be taught by University of Missouri Extension personnel and also include guest speakers.

Annie’s Project provides farm women with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to make informed risk management decisions regarding their farm business operations. This will enable farm women to become better managers, and in turn, increase the viability of their farming operation. It also gives farm women an opportunity to network and interact with other women involved in agriculture. Farm women find answers, strength, and friendship, in Annie’s Project.

Extension is offering Annie’s Project beginning February 17. The deadline to enroll is February 13. The course is targeted towards farm women, women landowners and new farmers. The course includes six evening classes (February 17, 24 and March 3, 10, 17 and 24). The location for this course is the Marceline High School Computer Lab in Marceline, MO. The high school is located at 314 Santa Fe Avenue.

The fee for this course is $75 which includes materials and a light meal each night. The class is being partially funded by a grant through the USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA). With the software, resources

FLPP Flea Market and Soup Luncheon On Saturday, Jan. 25, the Friends For La Plata Preservation sponsored their annual flea market and soup luncheon. The event was held in the Silver Rails Event Center in La Plata. The show featured over 30 booths. The FLPP members also operated a concession stand featuring homemade vegetable soup, sandwiches and cookies throughout the day.

The FLPP will use the proceeds from this Flea Market to continue renovations on the Green Theatre and Annex.

The Friends For La Plata Preservation historic group was founded in 1996, in order to preserve the rich history of the La Plata area. In addition to the Green Theatre and Annex renovation; the complete Santa Fe Depot restoration of 2003, was spearheaded by FLPP. Through the efforts of the group, the “La Plata Square Historic District” was included on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

David Barton, Jaymes Schrock, James Powell, and Richard Heitman have just returned from a missions trip to India.

They were privileged to work with some of our good friends who lead churches in that nation.

The trip included pastors meetings with several leaders as well as evangelistic outreaches. This year, the team traveled with Bishop Michael Ja to some village churches in a portion of the jungle known as Tiger Land. The folks at home were relieved to get word when the team returned safely to the city from that adventure!

Our team members were privileged to see a large number of people get their first taste of salvation during this trip.

They also took a group of Bible College students out to eat and watched them have their first taste of Kentucky Fried

LOCAL NEWS MSU 2014 Private Pesticide Update Applicator Training Missouri State University conferred 1,379 degrees to students at its 2013 fall commencement. Included were these Macon County students: Chelsey Lee Farrell, MS of La Plata; Olivia M Halley, BS of Macon and Zane Hildreth, MBA of Macon.

Each semester students who attain academic excellence are named to the dean’s list. Those students from Macon County are: Lynnsey D Keen of Callao; Olivia M Halley of Macon; Nicole M Lucas of Macon; Erika L Mueller of Macon and John C Wilcox of Macon.

Individuals needing to obtain or renew their Private Pesticide Applicator certification for the purchase of restricted use pesticides may attend one of the following training sessions. In order to obtain certification each individual must purchase the official Private Pesticide Applicator Training Manual at a cost of $12.

The Oklahoma Indians 4-H club has been busy with their community projects. Members collected for Salvation Army at Christmastime. Their total collection amounted to $95. The club members also collected for United Way of Northeast Missouri in December. This collection amounted to $150 for their efforts. Members helping were Trista and Tanner Smith, Ben Larson, Sarah Larson, Elizabeth Larson, Kirk Laraon, Naomi Larson, Elaine Larson, Hannah Larson, Matt Lewis, Skyler Rhodes, Makenzie and Tucker Beautte, Justin and Travis Grove, Madison and Caden Taylor, Jason and Angela Campbell, Brooklynn and Lance Couch. The club received a certificate of gold for Service to the Community at the 4-H recognition night January 18 at the Kirksville Middle School.

The Oklahoma Indians 4-H club met on December 3rd, 2013 at the LaPlata Presbyterian Church.

The meeting was called to order by Elizabeth Larson.

Pledges were led by Sarah and Tanner. Roll call was called by MaKenzie. There were 19 members present.

The minutes were read by MaKenzie, they were approved. The treasurer’s report was given by Trista.

Our club has decided to table the date for the skate party until the next meeting. Our club will be going to the LaPlata Nursing Home to sing carols. Our

club will be signing cards and writing letters to six local servicemen/women: Kyle Larson- Air force, Naomi Larson- Air force, Chad Gladbach- Army, Chris Gladbach- Anny, Joe Meyers- Anny, and Gabe Hettinger- Anny. A big thanks goes to Tucker, MaKenzie, Angela, Jason, Brooklynn, Lance, Justin, Travis, Ben, Elizabeth, Hannah, Kirk, Sarah, Tanner, Trista, and Madison for ringing the bells for Salvation Army, we collected $93.90! Our club will be collecting money for the United Way at C&R on December 14th Recognition Night will be held on January 18th 2014, at the Kirksville Middle School. We had guest speakers from LaPlata Volunteer Fire Department, Jerry Thomas, Julie Lewis, and Aaron Pippin cari1e and told us how to make an escape route for our homes. They also told us about fire safety. Birthdays this month are Kirk and Sonya. Members present were MaKenzie, Tucker, Angel, Jason, Brooklynn, Kady, Lance, Justin, Travis, Ben, Elizabeth, Hannah, Kirk, Elaine, Sarah, Matthew, Tanner, Trista, and Madison. Leaders present were LeAnna, Sonya, Julie, Jennifer, Nikisha, Allen, and Sharron. Guests present were Jerry Thomas, Julie Lewis, Aaron Pippin, and Cash Sawyer. The next meeting will be held January 1st, 2014.

The Missouri Public Service Commission is seeking comments from the general public and telecommunications companies on the possible creation of a Missouri Universal Service highcost fund.

A high-cost fund would be used to assist phone companies in building infrastructure to provide telecommunications services to customers in areas of the state that are costly to serve. Funding would likely be through a surcharge placed on customer bills.

In July 2013, the Commission opened a working case based upon a recommendation from the Public Service Commission Staff (PSC Staff) to receive

information from interested stakeholders and the general public regarding the Missouri Lifeline Program and Missouri Universal Service Fund. In December, the Commission directed the PSC Staff to investigate the possibility of expanding the scope of the current Missouri Universal Service Fund by implementing a state highcost fund.

On January 10, 2014, the PSC Staff filed a motion asking the Commission to assist it in its investigation by offering the general public and telecommunications companies an opportunity to respond to a number of questions about the need for a Universal Service Fund highcost program as well as the

structure and funding for such a program.

The Commission is inviting the public and telecommunications companies to comment on the questions and to provide information to the Commission no later than February 14, 2014.

The public is welcome to submit comments by forwarding electronic communications through the Public Service Commission’s Electronic Filing and Information System (EFIS) or by mailing written comments to the Commission.

An odd event happened Thursday evening, January 16th. Out of a clear blue sky came what I will call a squall. It came quickly, severe winds, black sky, snow and blizzard conditions and went away just as fast. You were unable to see anything when it was here. About 1 inch of snow was left when it departed.

Monday brought another inch of snow and now very cold temperatures around zero. I would describe our winter as very frigid and changeable.

Friday night Mike and Lana Daniels celebrated Mike’s birthday. Also enjoying the celebration were Chris, Rachel and Nora Daniels, Pat Daniels and friend, Jess.

Donna Seibold enjoyed a visit from her neighbor, Kate Laird Tuesday.

Virginia Perry and husband, Junior, son Randy and grandson Josh Perry celebrated Virginia’s birthday at a Kirksville restaurant last week.

MaKenzie Beautte and Sharron Burns worked on the 4-H minutes at La Plata Library last Monday.

Irene Osborn, president, opened the meeting with all repeating the pledge to the American flag, and then repeating the Missouri pledge. Roll call was “What did play in the winter as a child at home and school?” What fun we had!

No minutes as our secretary fell and broke her hip and shoulder. Treasurer report was given and more stamps were to be bought.

The hostess, Carol, gave the program “Back Yard Birds” from the November Missouri Conservationist. Missouri is a great state for birds. 400 species recorded and 15 species nest in our state. If you feed them in your back

yard, you need good quality seed, fresh water for drinking and bathing, and plenty of places for shelter and nesting sites. The birds are beautiful and fin to watch. There are cardinals, woodpeckers, goldfinch that change color in spring and fall, nuthatch, junco, blue jays, robin, song sparrow, blue birds wrens that sing so sweet, dove, hummingbirds, to name a few.

Feeds to use are white millet, Niger “thistle”, black oil sunflower seeds. Enid said grown corn is good.

You can make your own hummingbird feed. You can enjoy watching birds all year round and seeing new ones.

After the program, Carol had a fun word game, “Riddles for Gardeners,” won by Leila Ward. The rest of the time spent visiting and eating refreshments of cake, ice cream and other goodies.

Gail heard from Cindy Story, our Eastern Missouri Coordinator. Cindy awarded Janet with a certificate congratulating her on sending in an excellent TOPS club resume for our chapter.

Janet gave the second lesson about having a healthier heart. Some of the suggestions were to begin walking, getting a walking buddy would be good, use a step pedometer to measure your distance, get enough sleep, preferably 6 to 8 hours and have a flu shot.

Next week will be TOPS Bingo. The prizes will be one dollar gifts pertaining to Valentine’s Day. Everyone wins in TOPS Bingo.

Starting the new year is a good time to remember what TOPS represents. TOPS mission is to support our members as they take off and keep off pounds sensibly.

Lily’s Story An 8-Part Series

Tara Prosser is the lunch lady. She works at the Middle School.

There was a time not that long ago when Tara Prosser thought she had put Lily’s story behind her.

“After a year and a half, two years, I kept telling her, ‘It’s time to do something else great and amazing,’” said Prosser, the owner and handler for Lily, a search-and-rescue dog with the Newton County Rescue and Recovery Team.

But thanks to an upcoming children’s book and a newspaper series that will spotlight the efforts of the nearly 6-year-old Weimaraner after the May 2011 tornado, Lily’s story is poised to reach an even larger audience.

Prosser and her husband, Jeff, the operations manager for the Newton County ambulance service, found Lily at Petland during an adoption event. It was love at first sight...

After a few weeks, they noticed how intelligent Lily is and started her in obedience classes. Both members of the rescue and recovery team, they thought that it would be a good idea to train her as a rescue dog.

In April 2011, Lily got sick.

“About a month before the tornado, she almost died,” Prosser said.

The Prossers took Lily to the veterinary hospital at Oklahoma State University. ... After a week, Lily stabilized and it wasn’t long before she began to seem like herself again.

The weekend of the tornado, the Prossers took her to a search-and-rescue training event in Arkansas.

On their way home that Sunday, they learned that a tornado had touched down in Joplin.

“The next morning, we met up with the rescue team and worked for the next 14 days,” Tara Prosser said.

After the tornado, Prosser said Lily received some degree of notoriety because of her illness and rescue efforts. Last winter, St. Louis writer Carolyn Mueller was asked by her publisher at Reedy Press to consider writing a children’s book about Lily.

“It’s difficult subject matter to turn into a children’s book. The goal is to help kids deal with loss and tragedy, and know that bad things can happen in life, but everything can be OK.” The book, she said, is expected to be published in February.

But Lily’s story about her tornado rescue efforts won’t stop between the pages of Mueller’s book.

The Missouri Press Association worked with the writer to adapt it into a newspaper series for its annual Reading Across Missouri project, which will begin in January.

Dawn Kitchell, educational services director for the Missouri Press Association and Foundation, said Lily’s story was adapted into an eight-part series that will be published in newspapers around the state and spotlighted in the classroom.

“One of the things we look for with Reading Across Missouri is to tie in history,” Kitchell said.

“The Joplin tornado is part of our history now. Lily’s story combines a couple of great elements. There’s a dog, an event that children in our communities are familiar with and lessons to be learned from the story.

CHAPTER 1: Meet Lily and Tara Tara fell in love.

She knew, though, that a family dog was not a decision to take lightly. As much as she had fallen for the little, grey pup’s baby blues, she knew it was best to take an evening with the family to consider if this was the right thing to do. After all, lizards are much less work and trouble than a wound up ball of fur.

Leaving after lunch, she heads back to her modest ranch home and her Weimaraners.

Some days she stops at the local EMT offices to say a quick hello to her husband, Jeff, the Chief Paramedic Officer, a giant, friendly man.

They live here, in Joplin, Missouri, a town of 50,000 squatting in the southwest corner of the state, in Jasper County. Joplin has a Walmart, a Home Depot and a Target. But there’s also the quaint downtown strip of antique stores and soda fountains, vestiges of a time when the little city sat as a jewel on the long, winding belt of historic Route 66.

To Tara and Jeff Prosser, Joplin is home.

Tara lets the screen door slam shut as she is greeted by the dogs, Daisey and Lily, two great, grey leaping balls of energy, all glossy coats and blue eyes. Tara has two children, but these dogs are her babies. She lets them bounce around her and smack slobbering kisses across her cheeks.

“Four on the floor,” she tells them, though she’s smiling. “Four on the floor.”

Daisey is a new dog, fairly young and still very green, but Lily, Lily is her champ.

Five years earlier, the Prosser family visited a pet shop on a quest to buy a lizard for daughter Ivy. There, Tara locked eyes with a Weimaraner puppy.

The pup had soft, grey fur and melt-yourheart blue eyes. Floppy ears gave her a comical appearance, and she looked like she would never grow into those paws.

“I’m extremely emotional when it comes to her,” Prosser said about Lily.

“Knowing that there will be a book to memorialize what she did, I think it’s great. I’m glad her story will be known to lots of kids.”

And so, the pair signed up for obedience classes. Tara immediately saw Lily’s incredible intelligence. Lily mastered “sit,” “stay,” all of the basics, but Tara thought that maybe, just maybe, this dog could be something more.

The people of Joplin are country music people, ball cap people. The hardworking folks that keep cities like Joplin on the map for nearly 150 years.

“She’s going to get big,” Tara told Jeff.

“We’re going to have to do something with her!”

The morning light brought assurance to Tara’s gut feeling. She wanted that dog.

She called the pet store and was shocked to learn that the Weimaraner pup was gone! The store chain was opening a new shop in Springfield and had sent the little dog there for the grand opening.

Tara’s heart plummeted. She had seen something in those eyes. Some kind of intelligence. A connection. She just had to find that dog.

She begged the pet store to ship the puppy back to Joplin. Thankfully, it obliged.

“Lily,” Tara called her.

There was never any other name.

First, Lily’s paws grew. Then her legs became long, her nose grew large, her snout expanded. And always those big, floppy ears.

The Atlanta Hornets took a road trip in hopes of slaying the Dragons of Tina-Avalon Tuesday. The Hornets and the Dragons went basket to basket in the first quarter.

You could tell from the opening tip-off these where to evenly matched teams.

Atlanta got the early edge in the first quarter and led 18 to 13. The Dragons came back in the second frame and to teams went to the half with Atlanta leading 31 to 29. The Hornets came out smoking in the second half, driving the lane and turning over the Dragons to extend their lead. After three the Hornets led 50 to 38. The game went super up tempo in the forth as the Dragons rushed to come back and the Hornets fending them off. The Dragons were able to outscore Atlanta in the quarter but the Hornets held on for a 75 to 67 win. For the Hornets Garret West had 24 points, Lane Waddle 18, Collan Thrasher 17, Lance Weber 8, Korbin Gunnels 6 and Chase Wait 2 points.

Thursday they continued victory tour with a trip to Fayette. On Tuesday the Wildcats of Bevier packed their travel bags and went to Mendon to face the Eagles. Both teams came out on fire from the floor in a up and down high tempo first quarter. After one frame on the books the Wildcats trailed nineteen to twenty-two. Neither team cooled off in the second quarter as both squads hot their shoot and drove the ball to the bucket. The first team that was able to slow down the other on defense or stay hot was going to win this game. At the half the Eagles held a hard fought 32 to 43 lead. The second half it was the Wildcats that begin to slowdown on offense. The ball was not dropping and the Eagles used the fast pace of the game to extend the lead to 34 to 69 after three quarters. The game settled into a slower pace in the forth as the benches emptied. At the final horn the Cats had lost in Mendon 43 to 79. The Wildcats stayed home on Thursday to host the BMC Raiders in front of the home crowd in Bevier. The Wildcats got off to a nice start with both teams trading buckets in the first quarter. Bevier was able to extend the lead in the second frame with solid defense over a good BMC team. At the half the Cats held a 23 to 15 lead. For the second game in a row the boys got a little cold from the floor in the second half. BMC on the other hand started to have the long distance jumpers find the bottom of the basket. After three the Wildcats held a slim 31 to 29 lead. The long distance game by BMC continued in the forth as did the ice cold shooting by the Wildcats. Tuesday, January 21st the Lady Wildcats of Bevier traveled to Mendon to face the Northwestern Eagles. The Lady Cats got down early to a fired up Mendon team and home crowd eight to thirteen in the first quarter. In the second frame the girls started to warm up just like the arena. The Lady Cats started forcing their will into the paint and was the more aggressive team. Going into the half the scoreboard read 22 to 23 with the Eagles holding a one point lead. The Lady Wildcats continued to claw away at the Eagles defense in the third period and was able to flip the scrip and hold their own one point lead going into the forth frame. The girls were able to pull away from the Eagles in the forth and hold on over the last few minutes for a nice 47 to 41 road win. Thursday Night the Lady Cats returned to the home court to battle the BMC Lady Raiders. BMC was physical under the paint right out of the gates with the Lady Cats. The girls were up to the challenge early and were down only fourteen to seventeen after one quarter.

The two teams scrapped again in the second frame as both teams battled in the paint. At then half the Lady Wildcats trailed 22 to 30.

The war under the basket in Bevier continued in the third frame as both teams laid there hearts out. Fatigue after a long physical game started to show in the second half. The Bevier girls kept battling and pulled close only to see the Raiders extend the lead back out. The final, did not reflect how well a played game was put on for both teams with the Wildcats losing 49 to 65. We thought we could establish our defense and allow our defense to create offense. In the 3rd quarter our defense would come around, which finally led to some offensive momentum. We would out score Bevier 14-8 in the quarter.

Daniel Hernandez would score 8 points in the quarter, including a pair of three’s. We took this momentum into the 4th quarter and Dane Robertson would hit a pair of three’s as we went on to out score Bevier 16-4 in the final quarter. On Tuesday the Lady Raiders hosted the Bulldogs from Breckenridge at New Cambria. The Lady Raiders went right to work against the Bulldogs in front of an encouraging home crowd. The two teams played solid interior defense and had trouble prying the lid off the basket all evening. The Lady Raiders were able to nudge a victory over the line at the final horn. The Girls started the week off right with a 46 to 40 victory over a game Lady Bulldogs squad.

Thursday evening the Lady Raiders took to the road to face the Bevier Wildcats. The Lady Raiders established the inside game early and took a slight lead after one period seventeen to fourteen. BMC was terrific on their help defense and was able to drive the wings against the Wildcats. At the half the Raiders held a 30 to 22 lead. The girls went right back to work in the paint to start the second half.

They moved the ball inside on offense and forced Bevier to put up jumpers on defense. After three periods they had extended their lead to 47 to 37. Bevier made a run on the Lady Raiders in the forth but the girls were able to fend off the late rally and win the game 65 to 49. The Lady Raiders went to 2-0 on the week and 1-0 in conference play.

The Macon Tigers opened up their home basketball Tournament Monday Evening against the Mexico Bulldogs. The Tigers got off to a solid start; Macon was able to control the paint on offense and moved the ball around. Mexico looked out of shorts in the first half but really turned on the defensive pressure in the second half. The Tigers suffered from turnovers and a fast break offense by Mexico to fall to the Bulldogs 37 to 68.

Things then were about to get interesting.

The Tigers moved on to face a very good Moberly Spartan team on Wednesday Night. This would turn out to be a barnburner. Both teams came out to play with the Tigers matching the top seed bucket for bucket in the first period. The Tigers held a slim 15 to 14 lead after one period. The Tigers used the outside jumper to hold on against a solid inside game by Moberly. At the half the Tigers led 29 to 27. The Tigers caught fire in the third frame, the parameter game continued to favor the Tigers while they shutdown Moberly’s offense. Going into the final frame the Tigers held a 46 to 34 lead. Moberly went on a big run in the forth frame. This time it was the Spartans that bombed away from long distance. Macon was able to hold on by hitting clutch shots at the end and upsetting Moberly 61 to 59. The Tigers were moving on to the championship game. For Macon Josh Turner had 6 points, Brendan Watts 8, Craig Smith 1, Trey Kothe 12, Aaron Brown 6, Jon Murray 21, Christian Scott Thrasher 6 and Nolan Bright 1.

The Tigers moved on to face the same Mexico squad that had defeated them soundly in the first round for the tournament championship. Things appeared to be a repeat of the first game as things got started. The Tigers found them selves trailing 12 to 20 in the first quarter. Macon defense picked up in the second period holding the Bulldogs to five points. They had clawed back into the game. The Tigers trailed at the half 21 to 25. The Tigers roared back in the third quarter pounding the ball inside to Kothe and Murray to take a 45 to 35 lead. Things unraveled for the Tigers in the forth as turnovers plagued Macon. Mexico went on a big run of its own and was able to fend off another late Macon rally with free-throws. At the horn the game and the trophy slipped just out of Macon’s hands as they lost 65 to 69. For Macon Brendan Watts 15, Craig Smith 3, Trey Kothe 21, Aaron Brown 3, Jon Murray 17 and Christian Scott Thrasher 6 points.

The Macon Tigerettes kicked off their own Macon Tournament with a first round game against Mexico on Tuesday Evening. The Macon girls got things off slowly scoring only four first quarter points and trailing the Bulldogs by twelve. The Tigerettes started to clamp down their defense in the second frame and clawed their way back into the game. At the half the girls from Macon trailed 11 to 25.

The Macon offense warmed up at the start of the second half and they started their run on Mexico. At the end Photo by of three the Tigerettes had Julia Adami pulled closer and now only trailed 27 to 38. The forth period saw Macon go on a full sprint to catch the Bulldogs. Macon was able to drive the ball in the lane and turn the shaken Mexico squad over.

In the end it was just not enough time to complete the comeback and they fell 44 to 49. Katie Clapp scored 7 points, Tyra Douglas 9, Chalee Britt 8, Makenzie Jemes 6 and Lauren Arnold 6 points.

On Thursday Night the Tigerettes took on CCC foe the Brookfield Lady Bulldogs. Macon got off to an impressive start. The Tigerettes dominated the boards in the first half holding Brookfield to a one and done offense. The Ladies of Macon won all the hustle points and held Brookfield to two points in the second period. At the intermission Macon held a 23 to 12 lead. At the start of the second half you could see a change in the Bulldogs. Macon started to get a little careless with the ball and the Bulldogs capitalized pulling within five of Macon going into the forth frame. In the Forth Brookfield went on fire Frey dropped in 18 on the Tigers and broke the Macon girl’s hearts.

Brookfield pulled ahead and was able to maintain the late lead. At the horn the Tigerettes took a tough loss 42 to 47. Katie Clapp scored 3 points, Shelbe Butner 8 points, Cassie Martin 2, Chalee Britt 13, Makenzie Jemes 4 and Lauren Arnold 12 points.

Macon moved on to play old rivals in the South Shelby Cardinals on the Final Night of the Tournament. The game looked to be an evenly matched affair at the start with both teams putting up nine points in the first quarter. The Tigerettes started asserting their will in the second frame. The girls went on a nice offensive run in the second quarter and lead 31 to 18 at the half. Macon was able to hold off a third period rally by the Lady Cardinals and win their last game of the Tournament 52 to 43. Katie Clapp scored 10 points, Shelbe Butner 17 points, Cassie Martin 5, Megan Rowland 2, Shelby Schaefer 2, Chalee Britt 7, Makenzie Jemes 4 and Lauren Arnold 5 points.

On January the 21st the La Plata Bulldogs traveled to Shelbyville to play the Scotland County Tigers in the first round of the North Shelby Tournament.

The game got off to a very even start between two very balanced foes. At the end of the first period the score reflected the balance the Tigers led the Bulldogs eleven to ten. The Tigers were able to make a run on the Bulldogs in the second frame and went to the half leading La Plata 33 to 41.

At the start of the second half the Bulldogs came out clawing away. For the first time they lead a quarter and trailed after three 51 to 58.

In the forth they continued to chew into the Scotland County lead by pounding the rock into the paint. They came up just a little short and lost this well played game by both sides 66 to 69.

For La Plata Baylon Belt had 3 points, Ben Bolden 4, Seth Brown 8, Logan Smith 1, Tanner Riggins 25, Hunter Howe 10, Ty Davison 4 and Matt Safley 12 points.

The Bulldogs battled a familiar foe on Thursday as they faced the Tigers from Brashear. The two teams battled it out to a fairly even first quarter but the Bulldogs took over in the second frame. The Bulldogs outscored the Tiger twenty-one to nothing and had a commanding 35 to 8 lead. In the second half the Bulldogs put things on cruise control and won going away 78 to 19. For La Plata Baylon Belt had 10 points, Ben Bolden 14, Seth Brown 4, Logan Smith 8, Kirk Larson 4, Tanner Riggins 9, Hunter Howe 9, Ty Davison 4 and Matt Safley 16 points.

The Bulldogs faced another set of Tigers when they took on Marceline Friday Night. The two teams played an even first period with the score going back and forth. After one the Bulldogs held a one point lead 13 to 12. In the second frame the two team’s offense got rolling, Marceline went on a late run and took a lead into the half over the Bulldogs 29 to 33. The two teams settled into a defensive game in the second half. La Plata was able to put the brakes on the Marceline offense and dominate the paint. The Bulldogs outpaced the Tigers 25 to 12 in the second half and won the game 54 to 45. For La Plata Ben Bolden had 3 points, Seth Brown 4, Tanner Riggins 28, Hunter Howe 1 and Matt Safley 18 points.

Tuesday January 21st the Brashear Tigers traveled to Shelbyville to take part in the first round of the North Shelby Tournament. The Tigers faced the top seeded Marion County Mustangs. The Mustangs showed why they were the top seed in the first half of the game putting in forty-two points.

A strong interior defense held Brashear to one shot attempt per possession and seventeen points for the half. The Mustangs did not let up in the third quarter they pushed the ball on offense and continued to dominate the paint, 6 to 23. In the final frame the game begin to even out, the Tigers fought to the final horn but lost the first round game 30 to 83. For the Tigers Patrick Jochimsen had 5 points, Colt Acton 5, Sam Smith 2, Jacob Bleything 5, Chance Hill 4, Gabe Thomas 2 and Jacob Reeves 7.

Thursday the boys returned to the court at North Shelby to face the Bulldogs of LaPlata. Things started off well enough as the two teams traded buckets in the first quarter and the higher seeded Bulldogs led by only 8 to 14. Things begin to unravel for the Tigers in the second Quarter. The Bulldogs started to turn over the Tigers and ran out to a 21 to 0 quarter and an 8 to 35 halftime lead. The Tigers did not get over the shock until late in the third quarter as again LaPlata was able to dominate the paint. The boys came back nicely in the forth period but the middle part of the game was too much and they lost to the Bulldogs 19 to 78. For the Tigers Colt Acton had 2 points, Sam Smith 5, Jacob Bleything 2, Chance Hill 8 and Tyler Watson 2 Points.

“North Shelby Tournament. We received the 7 seed. Opened up playing Marceline. We scrapped with them but they’re just too strong and we got beat 59 to 42. We won the 2nd and 3rd quarters against them, outscoring them 31 to 23, but the hole we dug in the first quarter was too much to overcome against such a good team.

Kalie Lene scored 21, Hannah Larson had 12, Kelsi Hemmerling had 6, Morgan Kimmel with 2 and Jessica Davison 1.

Consolation semi-final on Wednesday vs North Shelby. Yet another difficult opponent. Close game throughout. Lost 46 to 41. Kalie Lene with 13, Ally Gregory and Kelsi Hemmerling each had 10, Hannah Larson scored 4, and Morgan Kimmel and Jessica Davison each had 2.

These girls have played their hearts out, especially this difficult stretch the last two weeks. I am so proud of their effort and the way they’ve come together as a team. They continue to come out and face top quality teams and never quit. They continue to get tougher and stronger. On January 21st the Lady Tigers of Brashear took on the Knox County Eagles in the first round of the North Shelby Tournament. The Lady Tigers and the Eagles had a well played first quarter between them. The Eagles managed a late run that gave them eleven to twenty-three lead after one quarter.

The Lady Tigers continued to battle the Eagles but had trouble with their foes speed and size. At the half Brashear trailed 19 to 45. The lady Tigers showed their heart in the second half, they continued to be outpaced by the Eagles but battled all game. The final buzzer showed the Lady Tigers had lost 25 to 72 but not the heart they showed. The Lady Tigers were lead by Ashley Moncrief 8 points, Abigail Kerby 4, Allison Thompson 5, Skylar Housman 2 and Mandy Taylor 6.

The girls returned to action on Thursday against the Scotland County Tigers. The Lady Tigers of Brashear got off to a slow start against Scotland County and found their selves trailing five to twenty. The girls from Brashear came back in the second quarter and battle to nearly even second period. At the half they trailed 17 to 33. Both teams came out cold in the second half with the girls only able to get one bucket to fall for them. The forth and final frame saw the scoring slow down but not the battle of wills between the two teams. Scotland County was able to win the game and continue on over Brashear 22 to 54. The Lady Tigers were lead by Ashley Moncrief 2 points, Abigail Kerby 4, Allison Thompson 3, Meredith Thomas 9, Abby Hall 2 and Mandy Taylor 2.
