6th Annual Winter Flea Market & Soup Luncheon

On Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, the Friends For La Plata Preservation will sponsor their annual flea market and soup luncheon. Again this year, the event will be held in the Silver Rails Event Center at 204 East Moore St. in La Plata. The event opens at 8:00 a.m. and will continue until 3:00 p.m.

The show will feature over 30 booths, and admission is free for all shoppers.

The FLPP members will operate a concession stand featuring homemade vegetable soup, sandwiches and cookies, throughout the day.

The Friends For La Plata Preservation will use the proceeds from this Flea Market to continue renovations on the Green Theatre and Annex.

A very emotional exhibit, “Remembering Our Fallen,” is a stark reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by over 140 Missourians killed in The War on Terror while wearing our country’s uniform in a war zone. The photo display, which includes pictures of each of Missouri’s Fallen, will be traveling throughout Missouri and will be coming to the Macon Public Library, for display January 21-30, 2014.

There is no admission charge.

The exhibit is open to the public, during the regular hours of the Macon Public Library (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 10 AM to 8 PM. Wednesday 10 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday 10 AM to 3 PM). The Library is located at the corner of Rutherford and Butler Streets in Macon.

“Remembering Our Fallen,” is a state-based touring photo display honoring Missouri military members who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, since September 11, 2001. As of this writing on January 12, 2014, we have temperatures in the 50’s. Most of the snow is melted. It is quite a change from the wind-chill of minus 25 last week and the sub-zero weather we had. We are recovering from the extreme polar vortex, which put us in the freezer for sure.

Gary and Nancy Belfield spent a week celebrating their wedding anniversary in Montego Bay, Jamaica this last week. They reported it was 85 degrees there.

Gale Curtis and sone, Logan and Colton, visited Deam and Marietta Slaughter this past week to help with chores and cattle.

Connie and David Gunnels had Nikisha, DJ, Lance, Kady and Brooklynn Couch, Dillon Huddleston, Christy and Rob Bristow as Sunday evening dinner guests.

Alayna Gray participated in basketball at the YMCA in Macon on Saturday.

Donna and Jerry Gray enjoyed her endeavors.

When I was eleven, my father asked my advice about an important matter. “Son, I’ve been offered a new job. I must answer soon. What do you think I should do?”

“Huh?” I answered with typical eleven-year-old intelligence. I was surprised by the news and by the question.

“I’ve been offered a job in Tennessee. It’s a lot more money, but we’ll have to move. I need your advice.”

We had just moved to a small farm in southern Mississippi. It had a creek at the back. Dad and I had fished there. We had a cow, a big garden, and lots of room. I even rode a bus to school, which was a big deal at the time. Dad worked in town, the long distance of three miles away.

It was a hard decision. It was just after the war, 1945.

Dad’s wages had been frozen for a long time. The new job meant more challenge and more responsibility. I knew Dad could handle it. Maybe he even needed it.

I swallowed hard and said, “Dad, I think you should take the new job.”

TOPS MO877 La Plata met Tuesday, Jan 14 at the La Plata Christian Church with seven members weighing in. Those attending our first meeting of 2014 were TOPS Gail, Janet, Barb Y., Bobbi, Donna, Joyce, Karen C., and KOPS Barbara G. Gail led the meeting. We opened the meeting with our TOPS and KOPS pledges.

Karen C. led us in out TOPS Rededication Song. Roll call was “How did the recent bitter cold affect you? DO you have a story to tell?”

Janet made a motion that a member who comes to the meeting late because of their jobs be eligible for weekly prizes and weight loss recognition, Donna, Joyce seconded the motion. All approved.

I don’t know if Dad took my advice just because he agreed, or if it really influenced his decision. However, he accepted the job in Tennessee.

I’ll never forget that day when Dad asked my advice.

From then on, it seems he always treated me like an adult, i.e. like a man. It made me feel good.

That’s how we parents should want our children to feel—worthy. Let’s not crush their self-esteem by treating them as incompetent and infantile. Let’s help them feel good about themselves by relating to them as mature persons.

When the prodigal son returned to the home, the father resisted all temptations to treat him as a worthless child. He emphasized his good points, not the bad.

He could have called him a worthless ne’er-do-well; instead, he said, “You are my son.”

God help us do the same.

Gail read information sent by Cindy, Eastern Missouri Coordinator, concerning State Recognition Day (SDR) to be held in St. Louis April 4-5.

Our new contest started with this meeting’s weight amount. Each member contributed one dollar. If a member loses or stays the same they are okay, but if they gain, they are our of the “Dollar Contest”. If everyone gains, the money goes into the clubs “kitty”. The member left standing with no weight gain wins the money. Janet is teaching a 6-week session on how to have and a keep more healthy heart.

FLPP Minutes The December 2nd meeting was called to order by Gary Smith, President. Carolyn Craig read the November minutes. Arlene Bunch made a motion to accept as read.

Wava McHenry seconded the motion. Arlene Bunch read the Treasurer’s report. Sharron Burns made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report.

Ann Bullock seconded the motion.

The Welcome to La Plata sign is now up. There was discussion about doing landscaping and possible lighting around the sign. This idea is tabled until Spring.

Ronnie McHenry is doing caulking at the Annex. This is needed to keep water leaks out.

Jack is continuing to work on the roof of the Annex.

News from Callao City Hall.

It’s been a cold hard winter for the City of Callao, as well as for everyone else.Hope Spring will be here soon.

Lot’s of good things are just around the corner for our little Town. We are moving along with the Waste Water Project. We are hoping to break ground in the Spring on this long awaited Project!

We are working on other various projects for the Betterment of Callao. We are looking at grants for a demolition projects as well as well as sidewalk and street. There are also different grants out there for other improvements we are looking at.

If you have not been to the new City Hall at 202 W. 2nd, stop on by. We have lot of ADA work ahead, but we are very comfortable in our new surroundings.

We would like to welcome our new Police Chief, David Summers. David lives in Callao and is on the Macon County Sheriffs Department.

He is a welcome asset to the City of Callao.

Sarah Kathryn McVay

More work need to be done on the wood above the front door and windows. The front door needs to be stripped and painted. It also needs weather stripping.

As of the December meeting, 17 booths have been rented for the upcoming Winter Flea Market which is being held Jan. 25th, 2014 at the Silver Rails. Schedules for food will not be available until January. Plans are being made to get signs painted for the Flea Market. Arlene Bunch and Betty Wheeler attended the Novinger craft show and the Macon craft show where they handed out fliers for the Flea Market.

The next meeting will be held Jan. 10, 2014 at 4:00 PM at the La Plata Library.

The meeting was adjourned.

Sarah Kathryn McVay, age 90 of Macon, Missouri and formerly of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, Missouri.

Born September 9, 1923 near Atlanta, Missouri, she was the daughter of Roy and Daisy (Gilbert) Behymer. On March 30, 1945 in La Plata she married Walter Wayne McVay who preceded her in death on January 29, 2005.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; one infant granddaughter; and one sister, Eileen Shott.

Surviving are four sons, Edwin McVay and wife Dorothy of Hallsville, Missouri, Lee McVay and wife Phyllis of Youngsville, Louisiana, Dale McVay and wife Gayle of Macon, Missouri, and Lynn McVay of Trenton, Missouri; one daughter, Ann Pipes of Kirksville, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Patrick McVay, Kate McVay-Robbins, Lisa Leonard, Lana Tavernaro, Sabrina Greenstreet, Timothy Pipes, Jeremiah McVay, and Brittney Istre; and seventeen great grandchildren.

Kathryn lived in Macon County all of her life. She was a graduate of Atlanta High School and Kirksville State Teachers College. Kathryn enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, and spending time with her family.

Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri. Officiating was be Pastor Karen Coy. Organist was Sara Beth Fouch playing “The Old Rugged Cross”.

Burial was in the La Plata Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tim Pipes, Jeremiah McVay, David Robbins, Shane Istre, Edwin McVay, and Lynn McVay.

The Seibert Club of La Plata, met Wednesday, January 15, 2014, in the dining room of the La Plata Nursing Home, with Kathy East as hostess for their regular meeting. President Irene Osborn called the meeting to order and Kathy led in prayer. Roll call was “One thing I would like to do in 2014.” Due to the absence of Treasurer Leila Ward, there was no Treasurer’s Report.

There was no Old Business.

Under New Business, we were reminded dues for 2014 were due and they were collected. We will collect items for Victim support Services, Kirksville, at our February meeting. Items needed include: motel/hotel soaps, shampoo, etc.; paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, tissues,

paper cups, paper plates, etc.

Anyone who would like to assist in this project can leave items at the La Plata Library during their regular hours.

Thanks to the Library for their willingness to help with this worthwhile project!

The Club books for 2014 were handed out and we are encouraged to decorate them for judging at the February meeting.

It was suggested that we collect box tops for the La Plata School and we decided to do this. We will also collect cereal boxes for the school— they need to be flattened. The “fronts” of Christmas, birthday, & other cards will also be collected. There can be NO writing on the backside of these cards. One other rule: NO Hallmark, American

Greetings, or Disney cards can be used.

The Club Collect was repeated. Dora reported she had spoken with Betty Cribb and that Lloyd is having some health issues.

Devotions, “Ripple Kindness Project,” were given by Dora and she presented the program on “Human Trafficking,” which is quite a problem in many countries, including the USA. She also read, “With Cupid As the Chauffeur,” and several other items from a 1910 book, “Caricature, the Wit and Humor of a Nation in Pictures, Songs, and Stories,” which was illustrated by American artists.

The “Hostess with the Mostest” contest consisted of paying 2¢-7¢, for such things

as black shoes, coin purse, rings, watch, etc. This added a little to our treasury and was fun! Irene won and received a roll of paper towels.

The meeting was adjourned and refreshments of a cheese ball, small pepperoni slices and small ham slices served with crackers, and “Better Than Sex Cake” were served, along with M & M’s, Peanut M & M’s, mixed nuts, tea, and coffee. The rest of the afternoon was spent visiting.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 19, 2014, with Marsha Yahl as hostess. Roll call will be “What do you do with your old Christmas cards?” and Kathy will have devotions and the program..

Those playing were Blanche Hoffman, Grace Killen, Isabel Hutcherson, Dorothy Dee Daniel, Norma Latimer, Lou Ann Taylor, Martha Mason, Helen Griswold, Doreena Young, Paul Tracy, Larry Vaughn, Frank Mason, and Darrell McDowell. The grand prize winners were Dorothy Dee, Helen, and Martha.

Holly and the residents played “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” Tuesday. They went to the top of the class and were able to proudly say they were smarter than a 5th grader! Shirley Carrison delighted us this afternoon with her beautiful piano playing, then after dinner, the Woodville Choir came out and sang a medley of inspirational and faith filled songs.

Wednesday, the residents and Holly enjoyed telling each other stories from days done by. Lots of wonderful memories were recalled and everyone had a great morning remembering the good ‘ole days. Pastor Dan Hogan, from the Clarence First Christian Church, led Bible study this afternoon.

The residents played the Nintendo Wii “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” game Thursday.

The questions started out fairly easy, but we got stumped in the end and walked away with nothing!

Maybe next time! Bill Lear & Friends came out this evening and provided another fun, music filled night for the residents and their guests.

Clark Dobbs, from the Macon First Baptist Church, led Bible study Friday. Holly and the residents played Popcorn Bingo this afternoon. The grand prize winners were Paul Tracy, Frank Mason, and Helen Griswold.

Saturday, Ronnie Shores came out and played songs from his cd collection. This afternoon, the residents watched “Premium Rush” during Movie Time with Darrell.

On 01/06/14 at approximately 12:35pm, an attendant of a local convenience store reported a customer leaving the business without paying for motor fuel. A Macon Police Officer responded to the 1300 block of North Missouri Street to investigate.

It was reported a tan blazer left the business after pumping approximately $40 in gas.

With the description given by the attendant, police were able to identify a suspect who was later contacted about the incident. The suspect thought their debit card was accepted at the pump and left after believing they had paid.

The suspect returned to the business to take care of the transaction. No arrests were made in the incident.

On 01/08/14 at approximately 8:45am, an officer of the Macon Police Department served an active arrest warrant on a male subject after turning himself in at the station. The suspect, a 57year old white male, posted the required bond and was released pending a municipal court date.

On 01/09/14, a Macon Police Officer arrested a white male for driving while suspended after enforcement contact was made in the 800 block of South Missouri Street. A 34-year old white male of Moberly was arrested for driving while his license was suspended. He was taken into custody and transported to the Macon Police Department for processing. He was later released pending a municipal court date after posting the required bond.

On 01/09/14, the Macon Police Department responded to two vehicle accidents.

The first being at 8:10am at the intersection of Highway 63 & Elm Streets and the second occurring in a business parking lot in the 700 block of East Briggs Drive at approximately 1:30pm. No injuries were reported in either accident and all the vehicles sustained only minor damage.

On 01/11/14 at approximately 1:10pm, the Macon Police Department responded to a vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 63 and Vine Streets. According to physical evidence and

verbal statements this accident occurred as V-1 and V-2 were traveling north on US Highway 63 just south of Vine St. V-2 was stopping for the red stop light at Vine St. D-1 advised he didn’t see V-1 stopping in time to avoid the collision with V-2 rear end.

Both vehicles pulled off the roadway and the authorities were contacted. No damage was observed on either vehicle and they were able to be driven from the scene.

D-2 advised of neck stiffness, however declined medical treatment. No other injuries were reported at the scene.

On 01/11/14 at approximately 1:00am, an officer of the Macon Police Department arrested a male subject on an active arrest warrant out of the City of Macon after responding to a possible disturbance in the area of Rollins and Bourke Streets.

Police arrested an 18-year old black male of Macon for failure to appear in court on the charge of failure to obey reasonable command of an officer. The male suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department for processing and was later taken to the Macon County Jail to be held in lieu of $215.40 cash only bond.

A criminal charge is merely an allegation and the defendant is, of course, presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Tuesday the Atlanta Hornets hosted the La Plata Bulldogs. Both teams started out firing from long range as first La Plata hit a three pointer then the Hornets followed suit to open the scoring. A strong inside presence by the Bulldogs appeared to frustrate the attacking Hornet offense in the first quarter. La Plata led after one period 6 to 19. Both teams again opened scoring in the second quarter with dueling three pointers.

The Bulldogs were commanding the boards in the second frame and went to the half leading the Hornets 14 to 30. In the third period things picked up for the hometown Hornets as they went on a six nothing run to close the gap to twenty to thirty. La Plata was able to stop the bleeding and go on a run of its own to lead by 24 to 41 after three periods. The game and the lanes opened by in the forth with both teams taking the ball to the basket. At the final horn Atlanta was not able to overcome the early Bulldog lead and lost 37 to 60.

On Thursday the Hornets traveled west to New Cambria to play the Raiders on their homecoming. The boys ran head on into a solid BMC squad. The Hornets got things off on the right foot and held a 17 to 12 lead after one quarter. The Hornets kept up the pressure in the second frame and went to the half with a 30 to 26 lead. Things started to unravel in the second half as the Hornets were forced into too many turnovers.

The Hornets were outscored 20 to 14 in the third frame and 9 to 19 in the forth. The Raiders hit their free throws late in the game and defeated the Hornets 53 to 63.

Friday Night the Hornets returned home to host Higbee in front of friends, family and alumni for Homecoming. The Hornets came out with all guns ablaze. The drove the ball inside to the paint, outpacing the Tigers 21 to 16 after one period and 26 to 16 in the second frame. The Hornets held a whopping 47 to 30 halftime lead. They did not cool off any in the third in a quick moving action packed game. Higbee outscored the Hornets 15 to 18 in the third and 22 to 24 in the forth but it was not enough to catch the Hornets on this night, Atlanta let the home celebration begin with an 84 to 72 victory.

Monday Night the Wildcats of Bevier hosted the Meadville Eagles. Meadville has had a habit all year of getting out to a fast start and tonight would not be any different. The Eagles pumped in twenty first quarter points and twenty-two second quarter points. The Wildcats did not get out to such a fast start scoring twelve and nine points in the first half and trailed by 21 at halftime. The Wildcats came out of the locker room with something to prove, they went on a run and was able to outscore the Eagles eighteen to seventeen in the third. Bevier again was able to outpace Meadville in the forth, topping the Eagles twelve to nine. The second half surge was not enough however and the Cats fell 51 to 68. For Bevier Brett Peukert had 4 points, Colby Peukert 21, Luke Long 5, Seth Shurvington 8, Andrew Peter 4 and Jesse Ashenfelter 9 points.

Friday the boys traveled north to face the Tigers of Brashear.

The two teams played an even first quarter of basketball with the Wildcats leading eleven to ten. The Wildcats used their quickness to build a slight lead in the second period and took a twenty-five to eighteen lead at halftime. The third quarter saw the boys extend the lead with a fourteen to ten effort. Bevier exploded in the forth, the Wildcats forced the ball inside and turned over the Tigers defensively. Bevier outpaced the Tiger twenty-five to nine to pull away. For Bevier Colby Peukert had 21, Caleb Richardson 4, Luke Long 8, Seth Shurvington 11, Andrew Peter 10, Lee Allen 10 and Tony Humphreys 2 points.

The Wildcats travel to Northwestern on Monday January 20th and host the BMC Raiders on Senior night Thursday January 23rd.

The Atlanta Hornets hosted the Lady Bulldogs of La Plata on Tuesday January 14th. The two teams played a evenly matched first half which was reflected in a 15 to 16 halftime score. The Bulldogs were able to maintain the lead until midway through the third period when the Lady Hornets tied things up at nineteen all. La Plata was able to pull ahead again going into the forth period by a score of 21 to 20. The two teams raced up and down the court in the forth period with Atlanta taking the lead by one with 3:15 to go in the game on a free throw.

The game went back and forth until less then two minutes to go in the game Atlanta took the lead for good 31 to 29. The Lady Hornets kept La Plata scoreless from there and won the game 36 to 29.

Thursday Night the Lady Hornets traveled to New Cambria to face the Raiders at their homecoming. The Girls were able to spoil the festivities for the home team with a hard fought 64 to 54 victory.

Friday Night the Girls celebrated their own Homecoming and welcomed back their Alumni dressed in a sea of blue.

The girls got behind early and trailed 8 to 11 after one quarter.

In the second the Atlanta press turned over the Higbee Lady Tigers and the Hornets gained the upper hand at halftime 24 to 19. The two teams played a very even third period with the Hornets keeping the Tigers at arms length. The Lady Hornets put things away in the forth pushed on by the Atlanta Alumni they outscored the Tigers 23 to 13. The girls gifted the home crowd with a 55 to 39 homecoming win.

On Monday the Lady Wildcats hosted Meadville. The Ladies from Bevier got off to a nice start against a good Eagles team in the first period outscoring them thirteen to seven.

The Eagles started to clog the lanes in the second period and force the Cats into contested shots. The Eagles were able to pull ahead before the half outscoring the Wildcats seventeen to five and lead 18 to 24. At the start of the second half the Lady Cats were able to play more of their game and push the ball. The Eagles countered with a solid inside attack and the two teams went to the forth period trailing by nine. The Lady Cats went on a forth quarter run forcing the Eagles to make some clutch shots to maintain the lead. Meadville was able to answer the call and the Lady Cats fell by seven 41 to 48. For Bevier Karissa Harrington had a rebound and a steal, Caiti Bradley 8 points, Memphis Buster 20, Beth Ashenfelter 10 and Rachel Lowe 3 points On Friday the Lady Cats traveled to Brashear. The Cats came out blazing in the first quarter. Bevier was able to penetrate the lane at will putting in twenty-five first quarter points and leading up eleven. The Lady Cats were held scoreless while the Tigers clawed back into the game; at the half the Tigers lead Bevier 25 to 29. The two teams traded buckets in the third quarter but Brashear was able to extend the lead slightly. The Basket appeared to have a lid on it for the Lady Cats as the ball appeared to trickle time and time again off the rim. In the end the Lady Cats returned home with a perplexing 38 to 50 loss. For Bevier Karissa Harrington had 3 points, Caiti Bradley 6, Memphis Buster 11, Beth Ashenfelter 7 and Rachel Lowe 11 points.

On Thursday the BMC Lady Raiders hosted the Atlanta Lady Hornets in New Cambria for Homecoming. The Raiders suffered a though loss against a good Lady Hornets squad. The final score was 54 to 64 at a raucous home court for the Lady Raiders. Due to the Martin Luther King Holiday, stats and details were not available at press time.

The Lady Raiders travel to Breckenridge on Tuesday and then to Bevier on Thursday January 23rd.

The Macon Tigers traveled to Monroe City on January 14th to face the Monroe City Panthers. The Panthers started the game 9-4 on the season with the Tigers sporting a 1-6 mark. The game was a see-saw effort for two evenly matched teams. Macon showed good effort on the road in a though road conference environment.

In the end the Panthers were able to overcome the Tigers and win 47 to 59. (Stats were unavailable at press time due to the Martin Luther King Holiday) The Tigers open up their own tournament on Monday at 5:00 against Mexico. Come put and support the team.

The Tigerettes traveled East on Highway 36 to face the Panthers of Monroe City on Tuesday January 14th.

The Tigers looked to chew up a Monroe City squad that was 1-10 coming into the game.

The Ladies did just that, they held the Panthers to four points in the first two periods while scoring ten and sixteen points respectively.

The Lady Tigers owned the paint, keeping the Panthers to one shot all night. At the Half Macon held a commanding 26 to 8 lead. In the third period the Panthers attempted to rally, Macon would have none of it and extended the lead fourteen to seven.

The driver warmed the bus in the forth and the Tigerettes turned on the defense even more holding Monroe City to two points.

A happy Tiger squad returned home 51 to 17.

For Macon Rebecca Nelson had 3 points, Sherry Hodge 4, Tyra Douglas 3, Chalee Britt 14, Shelbe Butner 11, Makenzie Jemes 7, Cassie Martin 3, Lauren Arnold 4 and Shelby Schaefer had 2 points.

Next week come out and support the girls as the open the Macon Invitational Tournament Tuesday Night against Mexico.

On Tuesday the 14th of January the La Plata Bulldogs traveled south to face their longtime rivals the Atlanta Hornets. The Bulldogs used an attacking style of offense to weave in and out of the Atlanta paint and go to the rim. After one period the Bulldogs lead the Hornets Nineteen to six.

The two teams exchanged lead-off 3 point buckets to start the second period.

The Bulldogs again used their inside advantage to frustrate the Hornets and lead at the half 30 to 14.

Atlanta went on an early run to start the second half but three straight free throws from Seth Brown broke the run. At the end of third the score stood at 41 to 24. The Bulldogs were able to close out the victory in the forth and final frame holding off another late Hornet run.

The Bulldogs returned home with the victory 60 to 37. For the Bulldogs Baylon Belt had 4 points, Mitch Cox 4, Seth Brown 15, Logan Smith 2, Tanner Riggins 12, Hunter Howe 6, Ty Davison 6, Hank Noah 2 and Matt Safley 9 points.

On Friday the Bulldogs hosted a strong boy’s team from Meadville. The Meadville Eagles came to town with only one loss on the season. The Eagles went to work on the Bulldogs from long range dropping in twelve 3 pointers to counter the Bulldogs inside presence. As the Bulldogs moved out to cover the perimeter shot the Eagles forced the ball inside on the pick and roll. In the end the Eagles were just too much this night for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs took one on the chin at home 38 to 72.

La Plata looks to bounce back with a strong showing at the North Shelby Tournament this week in Shelbyville.

Thursday at Marion County - Marion Co 52, LaPlata 45. Kalie Lene scored 20, Kelsi Hemmerling with 11, Morgan Kimmel had 9, Ally Gregory put in 3 and Hannah Larson had 2.

Friday vs. Meadville - Meadville 41, LaPlata 36. Kalie Lene again led us in scoring with 14, followed by Morgan Kimmel’s 8 points, Kelsi Hemmerling with 6, Ally Gregory and Hannah Larson each had 3 and Laryn Pinkston with 2. It was an extremely difficult week of games for sure. But the girls played their tails off and were competitive in each one of them. I’m so proud of their effort. I see improvement in our game all the time. Now, we just need to continue to work and get better. Friday Night January 17th the Brashear Tigers hosted the Wildcats from Bevier. The Boys had been off a full week and looked to get back in the grove against a solid Bevier team. Things started out well for the Tigers. The two teams battled back and forth with Brashear pulling out to a early lead. Bevier would come back late in the period and would lead by a single digit 10 to 11. The second frame saw the Wildcats press the ball and force the Tigers into more outside shots. Bevier was able to use the fast break to pull ahead 18 to 25 at the half. The start of the second half was much like the start of the game. The two sides traded buckets with Bevier holding a slight lead for the quarter. Bevier was able to pull away late in the final frame. The game ended with a home Tiger loss 37 to 64. Brashear Tristin Smith had 2 points, Colt Acton 2, Sam Smith 5, Jacob Bleything 7, Chance Hill 5, Jacob Reeves 14 and Tyler Watson 2 points.

This week the Tigers will participate in the North Shelby Tournament. Their opening game is Tuesday at 9:00 PM against Marion County.

On January 17th the Lady Tigers hosted the Bevier Wildcats. The Brashear girls looked to change their fortunes and pick up their first win of the season for the home town team. Things did not look good early however. Bevier chased the girls up and down the court in the first period. The Wildcats drove the ball to the basket and forced several early mistakes by the Lady Tigers. At the end of the quarter it looked like the home town was going to have to wait on the first victory with Bevier leading 14 to 25.

The light came on in the second quarter, the Lady Tigers started dropping shots and the Wildcats could not find a single bucket. Brasher outscored the Wildcats 15 to 0 and lead 29 to 25 at the half. The two teams played a even third frame but the Lady Tigers were able to add to the lead by 2. The forth and final period the Tigers kept up the good defense and nearly doubled up the Brevier scoring 13 to 7. At the final whistle the Lady Tigers put a number in the win column before a delighted home crowd 50 to 38.

For the Lady Tigers Ashley Moncrief had 7 points, Abigail Kirby 6, Allison Thompson 6, Meredith Thomas 15, Skylar Housman 4 and Mandy Taylor 12 Points.

This week the girls play in the North Shelby Tournament starting on Tuesday at 7:30 Vs. Knox County.
