Columbia, MO HUNTER EDUCATION CLASSES TO BE OFFERED AT MARK TWAIN LAKE The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake will sponsor two Hunter Education Classes this fall.

The second class will be on Friday October 12 (5:00p.m. to 9:00p.m.) and October 13 (8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m.), 2012 also at the M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center location.

Included in the training will be JXQ VDIHW\ ÀUHDUP DQG DPPXQLWLRQ information, the role of the hunter, wildlife management, ethics and hunter preparedness. MARK TWAIN LAKE TO HOST ANNUAL DEER HUNT FOR DISABLED The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, enthusiastic volunteer hunters, Whitetails Unlimited, and the Local Lions Club are planning the Annual Deer Hunt for disabled individuals which will be held at Mark Twain Lake.

The hunt will be held durLQJ WKH 0LVVRXUL 5LĂ H Deer season on Saturday, November 17 and Sunday, November 18 in the Indian Creek Recreation Area. The

hunt will be restricted to 35 permanently disabled (non ambulatory, semi ambulatory) individuals having a YDOLG 0LVVRXUL ÀUHarms deer tag and a hunter VDIHW\ FHUWLÀFDWLRQ FDUG All hunters must comply with the 2012 Missouri Department of Conservation hunting regulations.

To insure a safe hunting experience, certain procedures will be in effect throughout

Jon and Karen Butner and family of Macon were among the 108 families honored during the Missouri State Fair’s Farm Family Day, August 13.

The Butners were selected as the Macon County Missouri State Fair Farm Family by the Macon County Extension Council and local Farm Bureau.

The family includes Caleb, Seth, Emilee, Levi, Gracee, William and Audree. Caleb was not able to attend the fair that day in order to direct the family child care program.

Each year the fair sets aside a day to recognize farm families from across the state who are active in their community, involved in agricultural activities extension educational programs such as 4-H and FFA. Tracie Moore, Macon County 4-H Youth Development Specialist, says “The Butners are a model 4-H family. The kids are very active in their club work and different projects learning about life skills

that will help them as they become caring contributing adults. By their side are mom and dad, Karen and Jon, who have become great 4-H volunteers guiding Macon County 4-H members.”

The annual event was sponsored by Missouri Farm Bureau, Missouri Department of Agriculture, Missouri State Fair, University of Missouri Extension and the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.

Saturday at 10:30 a.m. the group toured Kirksville High School. They then boarded a bus to tour the city, which included a stop to tour Ophelia Parrish Junior High. The bus drove past Greenwood, Washington and Willard Elementary Schools and the site where Benton Elementary School once stood.

Kirksville Country Club was the setting Saturday evening for 6:00 p.m. social, followed by dinner. Mrs. Lanier White, former teacher, attended the social and Mrs. Pat Johnson and Mrs. Twila Anderson, former teachers, were dinner guests.

Following the meal, the group viewed a commemorative class reunion video produced by classmate, Craig Bowers, that featured photos of every classmate and ended with a special tribute to deceased classmates. Immediately following, a Celebration of Life service was conducted by classmates Dwight Buckingham and John Davison. Individual photos were displayed, their names were announced and candles were

lit in memory of: Ray Ferris, Mike Gross, Janet (Waddle) Nihiser, Tom Moore, Sherry Robinson, Dennis Fountain, Mike Davis, Merl Pettit, Randy Speaks, Randy Grissom, Dan Regagnon, Kathleen (Hoffman) Britt, Frank Eakins, Ed Zeigler, Susan Brackney, Steve Jeffries and Judy (Garrett) Theissen. The candles remained lit the rest of the evening.

Prizes for various accomplishments were awarded to Mike Welch, Debbie (Coin) Pawling, Jim Dabney and Trudy (McCollum) Cooper. played trivia and visited.

The weekend’s activities concluded Sunday with a 9:00 a.m. breakfast at Thousand Hills Dining Lodge. The class decided to have their 45th anniversary reunion during the KHS Homecoming weekend 2017.

Obituary Robin Lee Allen

The annual Back To School picnic was held Monday, August 27th at Atlanta schools. Students, parents, administration, faculty and staff attended the event and enjoyed, hot dogs, chips and a drink while visiting and meeting new friends and visiting with old friends, as well as meeting new faculty and staff.

Summer Fish Kills Explained Landowners with ponds often find dead fish floating this time of year. Many may wonder, why are my fish dying? The first guess usually is a chemical has gotten into the water.

When that is not the case, many are left still wondering why. Here is a crash course to explain what is most likely to blame.

Fish need dissolved oxygen to live. Oxygen enters an aquatic ecosystem in a variety of ways.

One way is during photosynthesis from the existing vegetation. Another is from wind stirring the water surface. On a sunny day, during daylight hours the plants are producing oxygen and air movement is at its peak, providing

sufficient levels of oxygen for fish to live. Overnight, oxygen levels decrease due to the lack of photosynthesis and air movement. Oxygen levels also decrease when vegetation decays in the water.

Changes in water temperature and the amount of sunlight, such as a cloudy day, can cause vegetation to die. Water also holds less oxygen as its temperature increases. Most surface water temperatures in ponds currently are between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on their depth and size, and some may exceed 90 degrees.

Low oxygen levels can occur any time of the year for a variety of rea-

sons and can affect any aquatic ecosystem, but a hot dry summer tends to create the “perfect storm” for fish kills in Missouri ponds. During the summer months, when rainfall is in short supply, the water clarity improves which allows sunlight to penetrate.

The increase in sunlight penetrating the water surface causes more aquatic plants to grow. While aquatic plants provide several benefits to fish and a pond, too many are detrimental. Excess vegetation is a double edged sword.

It can provide sustaining oxygen for fish on sunny days, but overnight or during cloudy days its decomposition will deprive the fish of oxygen. If veg-

etation covers more than 20% of the water surface you should consider methods to control the growth of vegetation.

So, if you see dead fish in a pond this time of year, it will likely be the result of low oxygen levels in the water. With the weather conditions we have been experiencing in Missouri, this summer, a cloudy day could result in the loss of fish, especially in small, shallow ponds.

If you observe fish piping at the surface, it indicates oxygen levels are declining. Larger fish are usually affected first due to their need for more oxygen than small fish.

Robin Lee Allen, the son of Donald and Joan (Eubanks) Allen, was born October 31, 1952 in Red Oak, Iowa. He passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2012 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident at the Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 59 years, 9 months and 26 days.

Robin grew up in Red Oak, graduating from Red Oak High School in l970. He attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO. Robin was united in marriage to Regina Bullington on June 5, 1971 and to this union three daughters were born: Roni, Dawn and Gina. For 14 years, Robin worked for Burlington Northern Railroad. He returned to Northwest Missouri State University earning his Bachelor’s degree in Education. Robin was a teacher and coached track, basketball and football at Essex, IA. He then taught Industrial Arts at La Plata, MO, where he coached baseball and track, taking them to state each year he was there. Robin returned to Red Oak in 2002 and began working for the Red Oak School System in the transportation department. He felt his mission field was with the youth of Red Oak. On October 8, 2005 Robin was united in marriage to Vicky Coutier in Red Oak. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting, playing softball, riding his motorcycle and cars. Robin was a big NASCAR fan. His favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt and he treasured his collection of NASCAR memorabilia. He was a member of Faith Community Church in Red Oak. Robin cherished his girls and grandchildren and loved to visit them.

Robin was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Allen and baby brother, Ryan Lynn Allen.

Robin is survived by his wife, Vicky Allen of Red Oak, IA; three daughters: Roni Pinkerton and husband Tim of Bellevue, NE; Dawn Klamert and husband Chris of Joliet, MT; and Gina Spencer and husband Ron of Bellevue, NE; 10 grandchildren: Dalton, Rylie, Jayden, Madison, Keeley and Piper Pinkerton; Shaina Klamert; Bailee, Gavin and Delainey Spencer; father, Donald Allen of Red Oak, IA; brothers: Roxie Allen and wife Aimee of Red Oak, IA; and Richard Allen and wife Iona of Corning, IA; niece and nephews; along with other relatives and friends.

May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn.

Funeral Service were held on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Community Church, Red Oak. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak with Rev. Brett White, officiating. water from a pond into the air and letting it fall back in the pond or installing a commercial aerator.

Well we survived yet another Soybean Festival in La Plata. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. I’m always overwhelmed at the continual support of this community and surrounding towns during the annual festival.

The families that come home for the weekend to see their classmates or friends from school and to participate in the events being held in the park, makes the numbers of attendance over the top. Kudo’s to the La Plata Promotional Committee on a job well done. I’ve been on this committee several times before in years past and it takes a LOT of hard work and dedication to pull the weekend off. You’ve done a great job and I already look forward to next years.

LOL, I know what the committee is thinking….

“Becky, Shut Up”! Na, really, I always enjoy the festival, but we are so busy at the paper office trying to get photos and results of events and then back here for that early deadline that sometimes we are working through most of the night on Monday. But, its worth it and I spose I can handle it once a year.

Randy’s birthday was last week. Poor guy, 49! I actually thought he was 50. I had to call his mom and ask. Woops! Sorry buddy!!

Sammie Jo mentioned that she will have her 5 year reunion next year.

Really? I’m gonna have my 30th. I woulda just liked to have popped her. LOL But good for her, she’ll enjoy herself, the only thing that I found at the time of my 5th year reunion is that everyone is still pretty close to home, so you see them all the time, running into them at the store, ballgames, etc. I’m not actually sure I even went to my 5th year reunion.

But, next year, well 30 is different. I can think of a few of my classmates I haven’t seen for some time now. But usually those are the ones that don’t come back. I haven’t seen Darla Gannon for over

JEFFCOAT 30 years and she’s a friend of mine on Facebook, so I know she isn’t that far away. Cheri (Gramling) and Mike Spencer, well grief… still in Virginia? I lost track. And then there are some in Macon, like Allison (Belt) Rowland that I haven’t even seen for over a year probably.

Where does the time go and why are we NOT keeping in touch? It was nice to see some of the class from the year above me, they had their 30th this year. Hehe! Always a great time at the festival to visit and meet the new additions to our friends’ families. (Is that a word?

Friends’?) hmmmm…..

Well it is now. Just add it to the Becky Dictionary, you might have to go back and look it up sometime.

Long version….. With Ya Did Ya. Sentence….. “You didn’t bring your truck whitchyadidya? LOL, oh sometimes I have no idea what I’m even saying. The past couple of weeks have been so busy that I can’t remember anything. Did I email that? Did I call that guy? Did I send that out?

Oh grief, when the school year begins, along comes all the sporting events, the Soybean Festival, Elmer Reunion, Corn Fest and so on and so on and then, yup, hunting season and Christmas, which by the way is only 110 days away.

I am so NOT ready for that. But after my little bundle from Sara arrives, it’ll put me in the mood just a tad more.

This year, the price has shot past $8. Livestock farmers and ranchers are painfully seeing their revenues melt due to lack of forage supplies and high feed costs. Compounding their pain are low prices in the short term due to more animals going to market so they do not have to be fed.

Feeling tremendous economic pressure, livestock producers are calling for relief. One highly visible target is our nation’s Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS). Many are calling for a waiver. In addition to the drought itself, they blame the government’s renewable fuels mandate for higher feed costs. If Farm Bureau just represented cattle, hog or poultry growers, it would be pretty easy to determine our position.

Similarly, if all of our members grew only corn, our position would be steadfast.

American agriculture is a big tent. Farm Bureau policy supports livestock producers. It also supports expanding renewable fuels to the maximum amount possible. Therein lies the rub.

So, how does a general farm organization reconcile these two positions, which are both held as fundamental and vital, in a year like this?

The simple answer is with great difficulty and a lot of conversation. But the complexities of this issue trump simple logic.

The economics behind renewable fuels reflect a new reality that goes well beyond the mandate.

At today’s energy and livestock prices, a bushel of corn is simply worth more passed through a vehicle’s tail pipe than it is passed through a chicken or a hog’s stomach. In fact, one can make a strong case that a bushel of corn is worth close to $10 per bushel by extracting all the energy and leaving the protein for an animal feed.

Nearly the entire petroleum refining industry is set up to refine oil to 84 octane content, with ethanol added to boost it to 87 octane. It is actually cheaper for the

refining system to produce 87 octane gasoline using ethanol than it is to refine oil to a full 87 octane. It took the RFS mandate to convince the oil companies of that fact. It is fairly certain that oil companies would revert to a full oilbased fuel—and raise the price of gasoline—if the renewable mandate were removed.

Further, with oil in the $80-$90 per barrel range, one recent study suggested that waiving the RFS in the short-term would only lower the price of corn by roughly 25 cents. Another suggested that corn prices next year would be affected anywhere between nothing and $1.30 per bushel.

What we are really facing is a problem of low grain stocks and of holding enough reserves to get through this temporary situation. Let me be emphatically clear on this point: re-creating a government stocks program does not work for any sector of production

agriculture. History shows that significant price swings are a natural part of the marketing cycle— even before ethanol and exports were players in the agricultural sector. One must go back to the 1930s to find the last time we had a severe drought but did not have the dead weight of government stocks hanging over the market.

And we saw price swings then very similar to what we are witnessing today.

There is no denying the fact that livestock producers are in a period of fundamental change.

The challenges they face cannot be minimized. As an organization, Farm Bureau will continue to have the internal discussion and work through our policy process as we always have. We are all of agriculture and will work toward finding the solution that represents the combined will and wisdom of our diverse membership. We are all in this together and we are in it for the long haul.

Pastor’s Corner “Sticks and stones, may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” If only that were true. Words do hurt. They may not cause physical pain but they do cause emotional hurt and spiritual hurt.

Words that are spoken in anger cause hurt. Words that berate someone are hurtful to those they are directed against. Words can tear down self worth.

They can create anger in others. Words can ruin lives.

Such words are a sin against God and against the person they are aimed at. We need to be careful about how our words can affect other people. Jesus tells us, “ Nothing from outside of a person can enter and contaminate a person in God’s sight; rather , the things that come out of a person’s mouth contaminate the person.” (Mark 7:15 CEB) I have heard Christian people say some ugly things to and about other people. Sometimes it against someone who does not believe in Jesus.

Sometimes it is against another person in their church. This is sin just as killing someone is a sin.

This applies not just to our words but also to our

PASTOR THOMAS actions. We should not retaliate against folks just because of their actions or their lifestyle.

Do our words and our actions honor God and Jesus? We ought to show the love of Jesus to everyone we meet. And we ought to be sincere about it. Jesus loved us before we knew him.

Jesus died for the sins of all human beings whether they believe in him or not. It is belief that makes a difference in whether or not someone receives eternal life. Do we, by our words and actions, make it easy for others to believe in Jesus? I hope we do.

Starting with July 17th weight records we had our “six week challenge� from July 24th through August 28th. Barb Y. won the challenge with the most weight lost and the most

weeks attended. All those participating had a weight loss and reached other personal goals. It was a success.

It was voted on and approved for the club to pay for the new t-shirts we are ordering and having printed.

NRMC Chief Nursing Officer Receives Outstanding Leadership Award Cindy Carter, Chief Nursing Officer at Northeast Regional Medical Center, has been honored with a Leadership Award by Community Health Systems, one of the nation’s leading operators of general acute-care hospitals. The organization includes Northeast Regional Medical Center and 134 other hospitals in 29 states. The Leadership Award recognizes hospital leaders who have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to quality healthcare and operational excellence.

Ms. Carter joined the leadership team at Northeast Regional Medical Center in October 2008. Originally from Chicago, Carter has been a nurse for 33 years with the majority of her career in nursing leadership.

During her tenure, she has provided oversight and coordination for a new OB unit that opened in October 2010, major renovation for 3 and 4th floor patient care units and the addition of four critical care beds. One of Ms. Carter’s highest priorities has been patient satisfaction.

Carter has been instrumental in implementation of the patient satisfactionfocused Community Cares Program, with improved scores over the past year.

Ms. Carter has been actively involved in the community.

She has been the vice chair for American Red Cross for

disaster relief, member of two nursing advisory boards-Truman State University and Kirksville Area Vocational School and board member for Rho Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau at Truman State University. “I am grateful for the award and I give credit to NRMC nursing, strong leadership and the employee teamwork throughout the hospital for making this all possible,� said Ms. Carter. “At Northeast Regional Medical Center, we are focused on excellence at every level of the organization. Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to provide the following information to farmers who may be traveling long distances or out-ofstate to obtain hay, silage and grain: The current drought in Missouri has brought with it challenges for farmers in our state. Farmers must make decisions about how they are going to feed their livestock after the drought has caused a shortage in hay, silage and grain production.

Missouri farmers are traveling long distances

and, in some instances, out-of-state to obtain hay, silage and grain. The Missouri Department of Transportation has issued special waivers for farmers hauling hay, silage and grain that address size and weight. Despite those size and weight waivers, depending on the distanced traveled, farm vehicles may now have to comply with state and federal safety regulations that previously did not apply.

Farmers are encouraged to review the regulations that pertain to farm vehicles and the transportation of goods.

The farmer may need to have the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) if the truck weighs over 26,000 lbs., or if it is licensed for over 26,000 lbs., or if it has three axles on the power unit. Fuel permits may be purchased from the state you are entering in lieu of the IFTA. The driver must possess a current medical card (DOT physical) when operating a truck with a GVWR of 10,001 or more lbs.

Permits must be obtained from MoDOT if you are traveling on an interstate and your vehicle or load is over the normal size and weight requirements.

Drivers must carry a log book if they operate a truck more than 100 miles from the farm. If the

vehicle stays intrastate, this does not apply to vehicles licensed for 42,000 lbs. or less.

This summer’s drought will most certainly bring the need to feed cattle hay, silage and grain much earlier this year, increasing the demand.

Therefore, it is important that farmers be aware of and follow the regulations set forth by the state. These regulations include, but are not limited to: When crossing state lines a truck is considered a commercial motor vehicle if it has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,001 lbs. or more, therefore, it must comply with federal regulations. This applies to farm vehicles.

Farm vehicles must display a USDOT number and the farm name.

The driver of a farm vehicle must at least 21 years of age.

Those driving a farm vehicle must have a commercial driver license if the truck’s GVWR exceeds 26,000 lbs., if the truck’s gross combined weight rating (GCWR) exceeds 26,000 lbs., and the truck is operated more than 150 miles from the farm.

Conducted By Troop B Officers During The Month Of August 2012 Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces the results of a DWI enforcement operation conducted in Macon County, and a DWI sobriety checkpoint conducted in Randolph County during the month of August 2012.

On Friday, August 10, 2012, and Saturday, August 11, 2012, from 11p.m. until 3 a.m., Troop B officers conducted a DWI saturation in Macon County.

During the enforcement operation, troopers patrolled specific areas with a goal of detecting impaired drivers and other traffic violations that contribute to traffic crashes. As a result of the operation, officers made seven arrests and issued 29

warnings. The following is a list of enforcement contacts made during the saturation: 1 -- Arrest for driving while intoxicated 2 -- Citations were issued for speed 1 -- Citation was issued for a seat belt violation 1 -- Citation was issued for a hazardous moving violation 1 -- Citation was issued for a non-moving violation 1 -- Citation was issued for a license violation On Saturday, August 18, 2012, members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Moberly Police Department, and the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint at the intersection of Missouri Route A and Missouri Route AA, in Randolph County. As a result of the checkpoint, which began

at 11 p.m. on August 18, 2012, and concluded at 3 a.m. on August 19, 2012, officers checked 141 vehicles, made seven arrests, and issued 24 warnings. The following is a list of enforcement contacts made during the checkpoint: 2 -- Arrests for misdemeanor drug violations 3 -- Citations were issued for insurance violations 1 -- Citation was issued for a non-moving violation 1 -- Citation was issued for a license violation Missouri is currently experiencing a 15% increase in traffic fatalities,” stated Captain Wilt. “Please drive safely, see that all occupants in your vehicle are properly restrained, and never drink and drive.”

Give blood during Sickle Cell Awareness Month Help the American Red Cross meet the needs of patients by donating blood during September, National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Sickle cell anemia is a disease that affects around 70,000 in the U.S., most of them of African descent but also some of Spanish, French, Italian, Greek and Turkish descent.

Sickle cell disease causes red blood cells to form in an abnormal crescent shape. One of the

most common treatments for sickle cell disease is regular blood transfusions, which can help reduce the risk of stroke, damage to major organs that can lead to severe infections, and other complications. There is currently no cure for sickle cell disease.

Don’t forget that the soybean plant will bloom several times before stopping so it can handle a longer dry spell; however, there is a limit to that. {3} Soybeans make an excellent feed if they can be put up right but that is the real tough issue. A large portion of the nutrition is in the leaves and thus they must be saved in order for the quality of

the hay/pasture to be excellent. Soybean hay put up at the right time and with the leaves on is very comparable to alfalfa hay.

It can be extremely tough to put them up right and many of the fields I see are already losing their green leaves. {4} What is the best way to try and put beans up? Experts say putting beans as baleage in a bag or pit is the best way because it’s the stems that take a long time to dry. I know not everyone can do that. If you decide to try and pasture the beans strip grazing is the best way to get the most feed value and not trample the field as a whole. {5} The most critical thing to remember if you hay or pasture beans is to know what chemical was used on them and the restrictions with those.

Some chemicals have withdrawal times and that can adversely affect milk and meat if not followed.

Contract Concerns For Farm Leases Our year this year will impact many things not only this year but in the future and farm leases are only an example. Since it is the time of year I get lease questions I want to discuss some potential concerns today.

You all know if you’ve read my column before that a farm lease, whether written or oral, is a legal, binding contract. First, our drought and corresponding poor crop year is likely to impact cash rents next year downward, at least to some degree.

How much is anyone’s idea right now. Second, if you signed a longer term agreement than 1 year then you are bound to that

assuming the rates are set.

That’s a good reason to have some flexibility in rates to discuss them because they can change, up as well as down. Third, there are times that renters and landlords don’t agree on how the land should be utilized. Including a mediator or provisions to deal with that can be extremely critical later on. Landlords may not want some land farmed and tenant (renters) not wishing to keep separate records are just 2 examples of items that there can be disagreements on. That’s why it is so important to communicate and get things resolved.

Fourth, on those acres where corn silage was re-

moved there won’t be carryover fertilizer like there normally is if the corn is combined and the stalks are left. That will be true if stalks are baled also. That needs to be accounted for if you have a new renter or if the landlord pays for part of the fertilizer.

Communication on farm leases is the key to a landlord and tenant getting along and not getting along in most every case.

A Complete Fall Car Checklist With the change of seasons most people examine their wardrobes.

Last seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coat is inspected for wear, and boots, sweaters and wool slacks come out of the closet for scrutiny. We are reminded as motorists that cars also need seasonal checkups.

Motorists are recommend to use a simple checklist to determine their carâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fall and winter maintenance needs.

Most of the items on the checklist can be inspected by car owners in less than an hour, but several others should be performed by a certified technician.

Winter Car Care Checklist Battery and Charging System â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Have the battery and charging system tested by a trained technician. A fully charged battery in good condition is required to start an engine in cold weather. AAA members can request a visit from an AAA Mobile Battery Service technician who will test their battery and replace it on-site, if necessary. AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities can also test and replace weak batteries.

Battery Cables and

Terminals â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Check the condition of the battery cables and terminals.

Make sure all connections are secure and remove any corrosion from the terminals and posts.

Drive Belts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Inspect belts for cracks or fraying.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just look at the smooth top surface of the belt, but turn it over and check the grooved underside where most belt wear occurs.

Engine Hoses â&#x20AC;&#x201C;Visually inspect the cooling system hoses for leaks, cracks or loose clamps. Also, squeeze the hoses to check for any that may be brittle or excessively spongy feeling and in need of replacement.

Tire Type and Tread â&#x20AC;&#x201C; In areas with heavy winter weather, changing to snow tires on all four wheels will provide the best winter traction. Allseason tires will work well in light to moderate snow conditions, providing they have adequate tread depth. If any tire has less than 3/32-inches of tread, it should be replaced.

Uneven wear on the tires can indicate alignment, suspension or wheel balance problems that should be addressed to

prevent further damage to the tires.

Tire Pressure â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Check tire pressure more frequently during winter months. As the temperature drops, so will the pressures in the tires â&#x20AC;&#x201D; typically 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The proper tire pressure levels can be found on a sticker located on the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side door jamb. And, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to check the spare.

Air Filter â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Check the engineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s air filter by holding it up to a 60-watt light bulb. If light can be seen through much of the filter, it is still clean enough to work effectively. However, if the light is blocked by most of the filter, replace it.

Coolant Levels â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Check the coolant level when the engine is cold.

If the coolant level is low, add a 50/50 solution of coolant and water to maintain the necessary antifreeze capability.

The level of antifreeze protection can be checked with an inexpensive tester available at any auto parts store.

Lights â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Check the operation of all headlights,

taillights, emergency flashers, turn signals, brake lights and back-up lights. Replace any burnt out bulbs.

Wiper Blades â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Blades should completely clear the glass with each swipe.

Replace blades that leave streaks or miss spots.

In areas with snowy conditions, consider installing winter wiper blades that wrap the blade in a rubber boot to prevent ice and snow buildup that can prevent good contact between the rubber blade and the glass.

Washer Fluid â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Fill the windshield washer fluid reservoir with a cleaning solution that has antifreeze components for cold weather use.

Brakes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Have brakes inspected by a certified technician to ensure all components are in good working order.

Transmission, Brake and Power Steering Fluids â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Check all fluids to ensure they are at or above the minimum safe levels.

Emergency Road Kit â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Update the carâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emergency kit for winter weather. The kit should include: Bag of abrasive material (sand, salt, cat litter) or traction mats;

snacks (energy or granola bars); Extra clothes; Firstaid kit; Basic toolkit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench); Mobile phone and car charger with important numbers programmed in it, including a roadside assistance provider.

Fall Into These Helpful Auto Tips Winter is just around the corner, and winter driving comes with it.

While safety is an important consideration all year long, there are certainly some auto maintenance jobs and safety checks that are specific to chilled air and winter driving that are a good idea to check into before we’re knee deep in the season. To be sure you don’t end up a road popsicle, or even worse end up with your holiday budget on ice thanks to unexpected repairs, have a look under the hood to be sure things are ship shape.

As with any change of season, you should go to your regular maintenance log to make sure you are up to date on the maintenance items that should be taken care of throughout the year. The change of seasons is a great time to go through some once-ayear or twice-a-year auto maintenance tasks.

Winter Specific Maintenance In addition to the added perils of winter driving, the change in weather can bring peril to your car’s systems. Freezing temps, salted roads and wintery precipitation can gang up on your car if you don’t give it a baseball-bat sized maintenance session.

These winter maintenance jobs will keep you out of trouble: Check your antifreeze Your antifreeze (the juice that goes in your radiator) is an essential part of your car’s winter protection. Your car contains a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Make sure the level is full and the mixture is close to 50/50.

Many service stations and repair centers will check this mixture free, or you can buy a tester for around $5. You did remember to perform a radiator flush last spring, didn’t you?

Inspect your tires The last line of defense between you and an oak tree are your tires. Winter is not the time to get cheap about your tires, so take the time to check the tread depth. The National Highway Transportation Safety Board says you need at least 2/32” of depth to be safe. It’s been my experience, especially in winter weather, that anything less than 4/32” (1/8”) be replaced soon. The old penny test is as reliable as anything to find out whether your treads are ready for winter action.

Also, be sure to check your tire pressure. Believe it or not, they lose a little pressure when it gets cold, so pump ‘em up. Do you need snow tires?

A few simple precautions now can increase your motoring safety this winter season.

Battery – Icy-cold temperatures can reduce a vehicle’s battery power by up to fifty percent. If the battery is barely turning the engine over now, it is likely to fail during winter. If your vehicle battery is older than three years, have it tested. Also, make sure the posts and connections are free of corrosion.

Oil – Dirty oil makes it harder for the engine to turn over, especially in cold weather, resulting in premature engine wear. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended oil change frequency and replace the oil with the appropriate grade for the seasonal temperatures in your area.

Tires – Tires are frequently the most neglected vehicle component but are among the most important. Check tire pressure and tread depth before winter sets in. .

Belts and Hoses – Modern materials have made belts and hoses very durable with relatively long lives, but they can deteriorate over time and fail without warning.

Gates says that most cooling system hoses fail from the inside, so to avoid an unexpected burst or pinhole leak, Gates suggests replacing the hoses, especially the upper radiator hose, every four years. Belts showing excessive glazing on the top surface, or cracks in the V-ribs should be replaced immediately, says Gates. The four-year replacement cycle applies to belts, as well.

Coolant -- Inspect the coolant annually. If the coolant is rusty, the cooling system may need a chemical cleaning and flushing. It can be tested for the proper 5050 mixture of antifreeze and water that will offer freeze protection to at least – 34ºF., and will provide adequate boil over and anticorrosion protection in most cases.

Fall Home Maintenance Fall is just around the corner: time to get your house in shape for the cooler months ahead. Although autumn can be one of the busiest seasons for homeowners preparing for winter, it’s also the best time to take advantage of the moderate weather to repair any damages before the first frost sets in. Here are some home maintenance ideas that will keep your home running in peak condition all winter long.

EXTERIOR MAINTENANCE Check foundation for cracks and caulk around the areas where masonry meets siding, where pipes or wires enter the house, and around the windows and door frames to prevent heat from escaping.

Install storm windows and doors and remove screens.

Before storing, clean and repair screens, spray with

a protective coating and place in a dry area of the basement or garage.

Inspect exterior walls to see if any paint is peeling or blistering on the house or outbuildings.

Make sure the roof is in good shape. Inspect for missing and loose shingles.

After leaves have fallen, clean out the gutters and downspouts, flush them with water, inspect joints, and tighten brackets if necessary. Clogged gutters are one of the major causes of ice dams. Replace old or damaged gutters with new ones that have built-in leaf guards.

Examine your pool cover for damage and replace if necessary.

Weather-strip your garage door. Make sure the seal between your garage door and the ground is tight to prevent drafts and keep out small animals.

Inspect your driveway for cracks. Clean out and repair any damage with driveway filler, then coat with a commercial sealer.

INTERIOR MAINTENANCE Have your heating system checked by a licensed heating contractor. Heating systems will use fuel more efficiently, last longer and have fewer problems if properly serviced.

Get your woodstove and fireplace in working order. Gary Webster, Creative Director of Travis Industries, suggests that you examine your wood stove or fireplace insert’s door gasket for a tight seal. Also clean and inspect the glass door for cracks and have the chimney cleaned by a licensed chimney sweep.

Change the direction of your ceiling fan to create an upward draft that redistributes warm air from the

ceiling.

Test and change the batteries in your smoke and carbon dioxide detectors and keep extra household batteries on hand.

Check basement windows for drafts, loose frames or cracked panes.

Vacuum internal parts of air conditioners. Remove units from windows or wrap outside box with an approved tarp or plastic air conditioner cover in order to prevent rusting of vital parts.

Clean your humidifiers regularly during the heating season. Bacteria and spores can develop in a dirty water tank resulting in unclean moisture misting out into your room YARD AND GARDEN Organize your garage.

Clean and store summer garden tools.

Prepare your yard equipment for storage.

This includes draining fuel from all gas-operated equipment such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and chain saws.

Check to see that all of your snow equipment is up and running before the first flurry falls. Organize your snow clearing gear. Fertilize the lawn with a high phosphorous mix to ensure healthy grass in the spring.

PORCH AND DECK Check the supports, stairs, and railings on porches and decks. Make sure the handrails can support someone slipping on snow or ice.

Clean porch and deck furniture, and look for any needed repairs. Cover and store outdoor furniture and barbecues in a protected area.

Make sure all soil is emptied from pots and planters. Dirt left in clay pots will freeze and cause the pots to crack if left outside.

DWI Sobriety Checkpoints For the past six years, Missouri has seen a reduction in the number of traffic fatalities. Since 2005, there has been a nearly 40 percent decrease in traffic-related fatalities.

Not since 1949 has Missouri seen so few people killed in traffic crashes. While this is good news, we still have far too many people dying each year on Missouri roadways.

So, what is the role of the Missouri State Highway Patrol in the reduction of fatalities? The Patrol is committed to enforcement and education with the hope this reduction continues. In the area of education, public information and education officers give presentations throughout the state to educate drivers of all ages and to encourage them to adopt responsible, safe driving habits. Through news releases and public service announcements, the public is reminded of the same. Regarding enforcement, the Patrol continues to aggressively enforce all traffic laws.

DWI checkpoints are one of the tools we use to help reduce the fatalities in Missouri.

In 2011, the Patrol conducted 67 sobriety checkpoints checking more than 19,694 vehicles for intoxicated drivers. A total of 278 people were arrested for driving while intoxicated. The Patrol made over 1,381 total arrests while conducting sobriety checkpoints throughout the state, including 87 misdemeanor drug arrests, 44 felony drug arrests, and 25 other felony arrests.

The Patrol also issued 2,459 warnings. Sobriety checkpoints are funded by grants from the National

Driving while intoxicated continues to be a contributing factor in too many of these deaths. It is one of the leading causes of fatal crashes in Missouri.

In 2011, over 25% of the 785 motor vehicle deaths were alcohol related.

Someone in Missouri is killed or injured in an alcohol-related traffic crash approximately every 1 hour and 50 minutes.

DWI checkpoints are designed and implemented in areas where there have been a high number of impairment-related crashes and enforcement contacts. The goal is simple. We want to remove intoxicated drivers from Missouri’s highways, thus making the driving environment safer for those traveling on them.

By statute, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s main purpose is to enforce traffic laws and promote safety on the highways.

By conducting various DWI checkpoints the Patrol is strengthening the foundation we were originally set by statute.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has held and will continue to hold sobriety checkpoints and saturations throughout the summer of 2012. We will continue to work with the public, other law enforcement agencies, and our partners on the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety to continue saving lives.

Driving while intoxicated is not just a law enforcement problem, but a community problem.

By working together, we can make Missouri’s roadways a safe conduit of travel.

A Much Needed Nutrition Boost MU researcher and partners will share techniques to improve digestibility of corn stover and other feed alternatives.

With 2012 bringing both the warmest and driest April through July stretch in 118 years, pastures, crops and even established trees are suffering from the drought. In response to the reduction in forages, some cow-calf operators across Missouri are considering significantly reducing or liquidating their herds.

For those livestock farmers struggling to find feed sources, Justin Sexten, MU beef nutritionist, the Missouri Corn Merchandising Council and the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association are working together to explore alternative forages. The coalition will be hosting workshops around the state to demonstrate how to improve digestibility of corn stover and lower-quality hay by 15 percent while doubling the feeds’ protein content.

Corn growers examine the quality of corn stover during a field day in Rhineland, Mo., earlier this year. To assist cattlemen in analyzing alternative feed stocks, the University of Missouri, Missouri Corn Merchandising Council and Missouri Cattlemen’s Association are hosting several free demonstrations across

Macon County Sheriff’s Office Report August 3, 2012 deputies conducted a warrant arrest on John Fitzpatrick age 46 of La Plata, for Domestic Assault in the 2nd Degree. Fitzpatrick was transported to the Macon County Jail for processing, and was unable to post the required $9000 cash only bond.

August 3, 2012 deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant in the 1200 block of North Ruby St. in Macon. While searching the residence for the original suspect deputies detected a strong chemical odor coming from the residence, deputies also found visible evidence of methamphetamine production.

Deputies applied for and received a search warrant for the property. Deputies located an active meth lab along with evidence of multiple meth cooks and ongoing production inside and outside the home. Robert E. Lawson age 41 of Macon was arrested for Production of a Controlled Substance – Methamphetamine (RSMo 195.211), Unlawful Use of Drug Paraphernalia - Meth (RSMo 195.233). Lawson remains in custody at the Macon County Jail unable to $150,000 cash only bond.

August 3, 2012 deputies arrested Jason Brower age

35 of Macon for Operating a Motor Vehicle without a Valid License (RSMo 302.020) and Possession of a Controlled Substance – Methamphetamine (RSMo 195.202). Brower was processed at the Macon County Jail, and posted the required $10,000 surety bond.

August 3, 2012 deputies responded to a non-injury traffic accident on Lacquer Ave in Macon. The driver of the vehicle stated she had been run off the roadway. The case remains under investigation.

August 3, 2012 deputies responded to Fireworks Ave to a report of a copper theft. The case remains under investigation.

August 4, 2012 deputies conducted a warrant arrest on Michael Wills age 20 of Macon, for Failing to Appear. Wills was transported to the Macon County Jail for processing and remains in custody, unable to post the required $40,000 cash only bond.

August 5, 2012 deputies arrested Tanner Schultz age 18 of La Plata for Driving While Intoxicated.

Schultz was transported to the Macon County Jail for processing, and posted the required bond.

August 6, 2012 deputies arrested Anthony Nejedly age 22 of Macon for Operating a Motor Vehicle

While License Suspended.

Nejedly was transported to the Macon County Jail for processing and posted the required bond.

August 7, 2012 deputies responded to the Callao Fire Station, and took a report of a theft of motor vehicle fuel.

The case remains under investigation.

August 7, 2012 deputies conducted a warrant arrest on Glen Johnson age 73 of Macon for Failing to Obey a Judge’s Order. Johnson was processed at the Macon County Jail, and released pending a court date.

August 7, 2012 deputies took a report of property damage on Gazelle St. in Excello. The victim reported a gunshot being fired at his home.

The case remains under investigation.

August 9, 2012 deputies took a report of a farm equipment theft from Hwy EE, in Callao. As a result of investigation, the case has been forwarded to the Prosecuting Attorney for the filing of formal charges against the suspects.

August 9, 2012 deputies arrested Juanita Lauderbeck age 30 of Macon, for Assault in the 3rd Degree. Lauderbeck was transported to the Macon County Jail for processing and released

pending her court appearance.

August 9, 2012deputies arrested Jakob D. Burton age 19 of Macon, MO for Minor in Possession of Liquor and Possession of up to 35 grams of Synthetic Cannabinoid.

Burton was transported to the Macon County Jail for processing, and released pending his court appearance.

August 11, 2012 deputies arrested Robert J. Crowley age 18 of Mexico, MO for Possession of Under 35 Grams of Marijuana. Crowley was transported to the Macon County Jail for processing, and released pending his court appearance.

August 14, 2012 deputies responded to the 32000 block of US Hwy 63 South in Macon, to a report of a burglary.

Evidence was collected and the case remains under investigation.

August 15, 2012 deputies responded to the 27000 block of Iris Street in La Plata, to the report of a burglary. Missing from the property is over a $1000 worth of tools and misc. items. Evidence was collected at the scene, and the case remains under investigation.

Ballot measure would improve health, reduce smoking and help public schools The Missouri Secretary of State today approved the tobacco tax increase initiative for inclusion on the November 2012 ballot by certifying the petition signatures presented in May 2012.

The initiative will help address Missouri’s health, smoking and school funding problems through a proposed $.73 tax increase per pack on cigarettes and an increased tax on other tobacco products by generating an additional $283 million in new revenue annually.

“Today’s certification is an important step forward for Missouri.

This measure would improve Missourians health, provide funding for smoking prevention and cessation and generate new funds for our public schools, colleges and universities, statewide,” said Misty Snodgrass, campaign spokesman and Director of Government

Affairs for the American Cancer Society.

“The petition process has shown the broad support this initiative has across Missouri and we look forward to continuing the conversation with voters in the weeks ahead.

Show Me a Brighter Future, a coalition of Missouri organizations and individuals led by the American Cancer Society, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and other educational and health organizations, is leading the initiative.

According to the group, Missourians are dying earlier from preventable tobacco-related illnesses.

Missouri has the 39th lowest life expectancy in the country with decreased life expectancy due, in part, to smoking.

Missouri has the 11th highest smoking rate in the country and the lowest tobacco tax, yet the state does not fund programs to help them quit. 8,600 Missouri kids become daily smokers each year.

Along with the multiple health problems levied on Missourians, tobacco use costs each Missouri household $565 a year in public expenditures.

“Missouri leads the way on numerous fronts but is last in how it deals with the costs associated with smoking,” said Snodgrass. “The tobacco tax increase would reverse this trend by funding much-needed prevention and cessation programs and providing millions for Missouri school children in need of additional funding. By voting in favor of the tobacco tax increase, Missourians are saying YES to a brighter, healthier future.”

The proposed ballot initiative would generate $283 million annually in new revenue for the state. As children head back to underfunded schools, the tobacco tax initiative creates an opportunity to provide much-needed funding thereby giving families more educational opportunities for their

kids.

Revenue from the tobacco tax would be split three ways, with an emphasis on providing new funding for Missouri schools: 20% of revenue would fund much-needed prevention and cessation programs for smokers who want to quit and to keep kids from starting to smoke.

50% of revenue would go into Missouri’s elementary and secondary education classrooms.

New funding for elementary and secondary education would help prevent staff reductions and increased classroom sizes.

30% of revenue would go to Missouri’s colleges and universities.

New funding for higher education will support educational opportunities for tomorrow’s workforce and future caregivers.
