Congressman Sam Graves (R-Tarkio) visited Macon on Wednesday, August 15th to help local Republicans celebrate the grand opening of their headquarters.

The 2012 Macon County Republican headquarters will be at 1607 Gary Street in Macon, located in the former “First Impressions” salon just south of the Red Cross Pharmacy off of Briggs Drive.

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces the following transfer to Troop B, effective August 12, 2012.

Effective August 12, 2012, Trooper William Koch transferred from Troop F, Gasconade and Osage counties, to Troop B, Zone 9, Marion and Ralls counties, where he will serve as a marine operations trooper. Trooper Koch is a native of Quincy, Illinois, and graduated from Quincy Senior High School. He holds an associate’s degree in law enforcement from John Wood Community College in Quincy, Illinois. Koch was appointed to the Patrol on May 29, 2005, and after graduating from the Patrol Academy was assigned to Troop B, Zone 7, Knox and Lewis counties. On August 1, 2008, he transferred to Troop F, Zone 6, Morgan & Moniteau counties, and on June 1, 2011, he was assigned to Zone 12, Gasconade and Osage counties. He is married to Laura (Keck) Koch.

A reception in honor of Francis “Bill” Wright at First Christian Church in Brookfield was attended by several members of his family from Bucklin and surrounding community. The reception was to honor Mr. Wright as he recently celebrated his 99th birthday.

Prior to the opening of the Republican Headquarters, Graves visited POET, just east of Macon for an “Ag Stop” meeting. The meeting was attend by 26 people, representing local farmers, POET Board members, local agri-business representatives, Macon County Commissioner Jon Dwiggins, Macon County Economic Development Director Denise Bennett and others with strong

interests in the continued success of Missouri’s agriculture and ethanol biorefineries.

“Congressman Graves is a strong friend, advocate and defender of many interests that directly affect the rural economy of Missouri and especially the Congressional District #6” states Steve Burnett, Poet’s General Manager, “We were indeed proud to be able to host the Congressman here at POET Biorefining – Macon for this “Ag Stop”.

Graves is a lifelong

resident of Tarkio, a small city on the Iowa – Nebraska border. He graduated from the University of Missouri, is a volunteer fireman and an Eagle Scout. Graves is also a 6th generation farmer.

Graves received more that 80% of the vote in the August 7th primary for his re-election. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Small Business Committee. The congressman also serves on the Transportation Committee and is one of only a handful of farmers in Congress.

Patrol Provides Regulation Clarification For Farmers Hauling Heavier Loads of Hay, Silage and Grain Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to provide the following information to farmers who may be traveling long distances or out-ofstate to obtain hay, silage and grain: The current drought in Missouri has brought with it challenges for farmers in our state.

Farmers must make decisions about how they are going to feed their livestock after the drought has caused a shortage in hay, silage and grain production. Missouri farmers are traveling long distances and, in some instances, out-of-state to obtain hay, silage and grain. The Missouri Department of Transportation has issued special waivers for farmers hauling hay, silage and grain that address size and weight. Despite those size and weight waivers, depending on the distanced traveled, farm vehicles may now have to comply with state and federal safety regulations that previously did not apply.

Farmers are encouraged to review the regulations that pertain to farm vehicles and the transportation of goods.

These regulations in-

clude, but are not limited to: • When crossing state lines a truck is considered a commercial motor vehicle if it has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,001 lbs. or more, therefore, it must comply with federal regulations. This applies to farm vehicles.

• Farm vehicles must display a USDOT number and the farm name.

• The driver of a farm vehicle must at least 21 years of age.

• Those driving a farm vehicle must have a commercial driver license if the truck’s GVWR exceeds 26,000 lbs., if the truck’s gross combined weight rating (GCWR) exceeds 26,000 lbs., and the truck is operated more than 150 miles from the farm.

• The farmer may need to have the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) if the truck weighs over 26,000 lbs., or if it is licensed for over 26,000 lbs., or if it has three axles on the power unit. Fuel permits may be purchased from the state you are entering in lieu of the IFTA. • The driver must possess a current medical card (DOT physical) when operating a truck

with a GVWR of 10,001 or more lbs.

• Permits must be obtained from MoDOT if you are traveling on an interstate and your vehicle or load is over the normal size and weight requirements.

• Drivers must carry a log book if they operate a truck more than 100 miles from the farm.

If the vehicle stays intrastate, this does not apply to vehicles licensed for 42,000 lbs. or less.

This summer’s drought will most certainly bring the need to feed cattle hay, silage and grain much earlier this year, increasing the demand.

Therefore, it is important that farmers be aware of and follow the regulations set forth by the state.

She was a pharmacist at Mt. Vernon Drug in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky. She was also a long-time member of Freedom Christian Church where her father was pastor. She was an avid landscaper, a talented photographer, and enjoyed cooking and scrapbooking. She was a success-

ful hunter and fisherman, a hobby she enjoyed with her husband, Ryan. Sarah was also a runner who enjoyed early-morning jogs with her sister. Most of all, Sarah was a kind, patient, and devoted wife and mother who cherished God and her family above all else. While Sarah may be physically absent from our earthly world, her legacy will remain forever.”

All runners received shirts and race numbers.

The shirts were printed with an image of an angel, with Archer’s footprint as the body and Avery and Addison’s handprints forming the wings. The angel’s head is a heart with a halo on top. A4 is below the foot representing all 4

children (with names that begin with A) The Sarah Roberts Hart Fund was established in honor of Sarah’s life. The Fund will provide scholarships for area students pursuing careers in the fields of pharmacy and/or medicine.

Helping Hand of Clarence held their monthly meeting on August 6 at the home of President Dorothy Lanpher in Clarence. We are a non-profit group established in August 2006 specifically for the charitable purpose of financially aiding local cancer patients.

Our meeting centered on the raising of funds to use for recipients in need.

We accumulate these funds through donations, memorials, and fundraisers to achieve our goal. All the money collected stays in Shelby County. The only requirement to receive a financial gift is to be a Shelby County resident experiencing cancer treatment.

On May 12, we hosted

our very first fundraising walk, and in June at the Clarence Homecoming, we raffled off a beautiful quilt.

The winner was Deandra Pantaleo from Clarence.

We will have another quilt and themed basket drawing in December at the Christmas event in Clarence.

Tickets will be on sale after October 1st. We are excited to be hosting a Craft Show in Clarence at the VFW Hall on Sunday, October 28 from 11am-5pm.

Vendor registration is due

by October 13. Fee is $10 per table. Soup and sandwich lunch will be available that day. Door prizes will be given for attendees.

You know the saying “Listen to what I mean, not what I say”? Well, I have been using that phrase a lot the past few years and it seems to come in handy more and more! No I’m not getting old and forgetful!

My dad loves retelling this little event in which I am about to tell you.

But remember as you are reading it that I did accomplish what I was sent out to do!

My dad, a jack of all trades, helped us pour our concrete patio behind our house. Everyone was there and ready to work and I was the “runner”, which means to run after tea, coffee, lunch etc…

Now, it’s my understanding when you are pouring concrete there are special tools you must use to get it level and get the edges right.

My dad told me to go to the rental place and rent a bull float. Of course I had no clue what this thing was, or used for, but being the “runner” it was my job to get it for them.

On my way to Macon, before I could go to the rental store, I had to get my sweet tea. That was the most important part of my trip as I was dying of thirst. I got to the rental store and somehow the name “Bull Float” left my mind completely! I walked into the store and just as I reached the counter it came back to me!

“Hi, I need to rent a Frog Baller”. Yes, that is exactly what I asked for.

The gentleman across the counter gave me a

LIEBHART funny look and said “What do you want”? So very clearly I said “ A Frog Baller”!

Well, with a smirk the gentleman asked another man working to come and see if he knew what I was looking for.

The other man come up and said “ So what are you needing”? I said, “I need to rent a “Frog Baller”. By now both men are having a hard time figuring out what I need and are shaking their heads with confused looks on their faces.

The second man finally asked me, “What are you needing it for”? I told them we were pouring a concrete patio. At that time they started laughing and asked me “Are you sure you don’t mean a “Bull Float”? “OH YEAH!” I said, “That is what I need”!

So, a few things come to mind as I write this, one is Kudos to Harland Rentals for figuring out what it was I needed and two, I need to carry a pen and paper.

But in the end, I ca me home with exactly what I was sent out for and our patio was completed. My dad does still send me after tools and items he needs, but now he tells me to be sure and remember what I’m after and not pull another “Frog Baller”. All’s

Pulpit number two The pulpit with the rear slightly higher due to the two different sizes of coasters. It stairs out at the congregation, waiting for the ole man to fill the spot reserved for him. It’s behind the home made pulpit that he designed.

There he stands a self made preacher molded from the endless hours on the potters wheel.

He is a seventy year preacher only because he ran out of options, and excuses.

On the second row on the right sits the pastors wife with a handkerchief,

guitar pick, and an extra pair of glasses.

In her bible is the sermon he forgot, she has it, she went back home and brought it back for him, He knows she is the glue holding him together.

We should be in for a good time this morning he has his brown penny loafers on with the penny in the left loafer he calls them his jumping shoes, looks like he dressed himself this morning. Is that the same shirt he wore last night? He moves like a big cat.

Where he is light on big words he tries to make up for it with uncompromised preaches He got happy in the song service and ran it over.

Do not even consider that he might cut the sermon short, besides there are still two special songs to be sung and do not forget the offering Somethings up I will bet this one has some heat on it, you can tell when he reads his text, stops and takes that long look across the crowd.

If it’s too tough he will hear about it all the way home.

When the subject is Hell, Gossip, or whining, some say he preaches mad.

Well hold on here we go, I sure wish he would wear a tie like my old pastor.

Macon High School Cheerleaders held a car wash on Tuesday, August 14th to raise money for the state cheer competition that will be held at the Hearnes Center in Columbia on October 20th.

by Jim Coin Monkey Business – Today’s story is a bit of a tail and a sneaky monkey connected to it. I have a niece that has a pet monkey, and I use the pet word very loosely. My niece has always loved monkeys all her life, pictures ,stuffed toys, anything monkey ,even monkey games if there is such a thing, all the way to adult hood and into marriage.

So just as soon as she could she got a real monkey he stands about waist hi 3 Ft. or so wares little monkey clothes , has little monkey shoes, little monkey hats and wears little monkey diapers pretty much a little monkey kid per say. He is just another part of the family and if you ask me, he is one of the smarter ones to boot .

A few things about this guy is he had to have his teeth removed cause if he don’t like you he will just give you a little hug and bite you in a heartbeat, so thus there goes the choppers. He will try and size you up when he meets you by trying to make eye contact, and or being taller then you, the intimidation thing and yes the slight beating of the chest ooo ooo ooo sounds ring out from his big o lips too, kind of like a little bully with short man syndrome.

I like the little guy and we get along pretty good after we established our

ranks but we still have our times of dominancy. Like the time I was visiting and he was in his room (a large total enclosed dog kennel with a canapé bed in it) I walked by a noticed little feller chewing on something white so I paused and said to the little ape head what is that you got in your mouth, you better spit that out before you get in trouble. Well !!! the next thing I knew he went nuts or I guess banana’s in this cause and round and round in his room faster and faster jumping back and forth and all of a sudden he spits out this little white plastic cap (that went on the bed post ) right at my feet on the outside of the cage. Well without giving it a thought I bend over and picked it up - BAMthrough the cage he puts him arms and grabs my hair pulls me INTO THE CAGE FACE FIRST and SLAPS THE H--- OUT OF ME. O YES THAT’S RIGHT WITH BOTH HANDS (did I mention he is lighten fast ) he got me 3 or 4 good ones before I knew what was going down ,and then bam back in the other side of his room he went . By then I was setting on my butt still wondering what just took place and when I realized what had happened my niece told me he got mad at me for telling on him for chewing on the bed post cap, that he knew

Blaming the RFS and the ethanol industry for drought-related affects is disingenuous and dangerous. We are facing the most difficult drought in the last 50 years; now is not the time to turn our back on our farmers.

Now is the time to let the market work and stand by our farmers.

SEAFOOD SALAD 3 Tablespoons Lemon Juice 3 Boiled Eggs (Sliced) 2 Cups Flaked Crab Meat Mayonnaise (Miracle Whip) 1 Cup Chopped Celery Salt & Pepper Sprinkle lemon juice over crab meat in medium bowl. Mix together the crab meat and celery then add mayonnaise to moisten. Season with salt and pepper and fold in eggs. Arrange on a lettuce leaf to serve. Serves 4 – 6.

HOMEMADE PANCAKE MIX 1 Tbs. Sugar 2 tsp. Baking Powder ¼ tsp. Salt 1 Egg (beaten) 1 C. Milk 1 Tbs. Vegetable Oil 1 C. Flour Mix all dry ingredients together in mixing bowl, and then combine egg, milk and oil. Stir mixture just until blended, but slightly lumpy. Pour about ¼ cup batter onto a hot, lightly greased griddle or non stick skillet for each pancake.

GARDEN VEGETABLE JUMBLE 2 T. oil 4 cups zucchini, chopped 1 cup onion, chopped 1 cup carrots, chopped 1 green pepper, sliced into strips 1 tomato, chopped 2 tsp. fresh basil, diced Salt and pepper to taste ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese Place oil in a skillet, turning to coat the bottom. Add zucchini, onion, carrots, green pepper and cook over medium heat until crisp-tender. Stir in tomato, basil, salt and pepper. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top.

Cover skillet and allow cheese to melt.

Homemade Soap Is Practical & Beneficial

by Marjorie Baggos Making soap at home is practical and beneficial.

It can save you money and promote healthier skin since the ingredients used are of minimal cost and provide a natural alternative to store bought soap. Manufactured soaps often contain petroleum based detergents, artificial coloring/dyes and degreasers. All which can be harmful to use on your skin. Most importantly, store bought soap products don’t always contain the natural glycerin that moisturizes your skin.

Homemade glycerin soap making is an enjoyable hobby that is simple to do!

You may be wondering, “What is glycerin?” Well, glycerin (the key ingredient for glycerin soap) is a hygroscopic matter produced by saponification.

Hygroscopic means that it literally attracts water right out of the air! This property gives glycerin its natural moisturizing ability. Glycerin does not leave a film behind and you will be able to “feel” the difference!

There are three different ways to making glycerin soap from home. The simplest method would be to pick up a glycerin soap making kit. The craft stores have them or they can be found on-line. The second method is the “melt and pour.” This method allows you to create your very own custom glycerin based soap. Thirdly, if you’re up for a bit of a challenge you can use the “cold press method.”

Making soap using the cold press method causes a reaction called saponification to take place between the base, (which would be your lye) and the acid, (which are your oils, fats or lard). Two things happen here. The oil/fats mix with the lye to create soap and the glycerin molecule (located in the acid-lye) is released and C Y

turns into that wonderful skin nourishing glycerin.

Anyways, this just means that for almost all soap recipes, glycerin is automatically created!

The way I got started was the “melt and pour” method. It is very easy to do and you can purchase all of your supplies from around your house or your local hobby store. (The closet store to the Macon area is in Columbia.)

So to get started, you’ll simply need clear glycerin soap bars, food coloring, plastic stir straws, a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol and molds. For molds you can use a 9 X13 glass dish, milk or juice cartons, ice cube trays, or purchased molds. Glycerin is usually sold in large blocks at crafts stores; to melt it, cut it into small chucks and put them into a microwavable bowl.

Heat the glycerin cubes in a microwave on high, stirring every 15-second, until it’s completely melted.

Secondly, mix your food coloring up with plastic spoon or straw in another bowl. Remember a little bit goes a long ways! If you’re using milk or juice cartons you’ll want to coat them with petroleum jelly first. Pour in melted glycerin. The air bubbles will rise to the top.

Spray the top of the soap with the rubbing alcohol to get rid of them. Let cool completely (about 2 hours).

After your soap has cooled just tear away the cartons, you may want to use a plastic scraper. If you used a glass pan and have a hard time getting them out then place the dish in the freezer for ten minutes. Cut your bars into squares and wrap with plastic or lunch baggies if you’re not going to use them right away.

Glycerin soap making is simple and simply makes attractive beautiful skin nourishing soap! Enjoy!

Country Living By: Carrie Chiarottino This past week life has been anything but in the country. We were at all four nights of the homecoming.

The kids couldn’t miss a night of fun, friends, hamburgers, and rides. I thought all the entertainment on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday was good, but I truly love the locals on Thursday. As most of you know Thursday night was extremely special for my daughter. I am the mother of the Bevier Homecoming Queen. All the girls were so beautiful and I would not want the job of choosing any of the winners. I have to say I am excited when Saturday rolls around. Not only is it the last night of the homecoming, by this time I’m usually getting a little wore out, but it is also the day of the parade. The Bevier Homecoming parade is such an extraordinary event. This little, normally quiet town was full of life well before 1pm which is parade time every year. People started lining the sides of Main Street early to ensure they would have a perfect seat for the amazing event.

Floats, antique vehicles, horses, and royalty among other things were seen lining up ready to be motioned into place to take a stroll down normally a short pass through town. My sister-in-law and I, with our children in tow on their horses, were among the people waiting to get the signal to make our journey north down Main Street. The kids dressed up as Indians and also decorated their horses with paint and

feathers. They entered the parade as the Chiarottino Tribe, my sister-in-laws dad came up with the name.

I thought this was highly appropriate because they normally act like wild Indians. They had such a good time riding in the parade, waving as people would shout out their names. My son told me how he loved riding in the parade. People come from far and wide to be a part of the parade. This year was no exception; one of our own fallen soldiers, Adam O. Smith, was honored by the Patriot Guard. I didn’t know Adam personally but I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming since of pride as they rode their bikes decorated with American Flags. My brother also had a float in the parade honoring his best friend that died in a car accident 10 years ago. Cory Cannan was honored by his family, friends and their families. I just can say enough how I love the Bevier Homecoming parade. There is nothing like it.

The pride most of us have for our community is amazing. It’s no secret that my dad has served this community for well over 30 years. So I feel I am defiantly vested and also the fact that I have never lived anywhere else. So another Homecoming has come to pass and we will gladly welcome it again next year as we celebrate 80 years.

I hope all of you can join us for this spectacular event next year!

Bucklin City Council Meets

The Bucklin City Council met August 8, 2012 in regular session with the following present: Mayor Don Noah, George Simmons, Dennis Cole, Barry Shipley, Larry Daniels, John Wright, Robert Walters and Amber Burnam.

Mayor Noah called the meeting to order at 5:10 p m.

Amber Burnam came before the board representing Veolia, she advised the council she was working on a new trash contract with the city.

Mayor Noah advised the board he would like to meet with the Linn County Commissioners about collecting real estate and personal property taxes for the City of Bucklin. The board asked Mayor Noah to make contact with the Commissioners and get on their agenda next week if possible.

Alderman Simmons

made motion to purchase new red and white street signs from Jack’s Sign Company in Clarksburg, Mo. Motion seconded and carried.

Mayor Noah advised council City Attorney Terry Tschannen had called and stated there was a class action lawsuit filed concerning Atrazine in the city lake. Clerk Wright, Alderman Cole and Mayor Noah had met with Mr. Tschannen on Friday. It was decided to pursue this matter.

Fire Chief Greg Noah came to the board and told them the water tanker was up and running. He is also looking into getting a grant for equipment for the fire department.

In street concerns Walters advised council APAC would be here the first or second week of September.

Motion to adjourn made and carried at 6:45 p m.

Combines roll. It’s harvest time in north central Missouri. As Highway 5 fades into the countryside southwest of Macon,

it leads us down a lonely one-lane country road not far from the community of Mike, in Chariton County.

Literally miles from civilization, this is rural Missouri. Headquartered for

the day out of a machine shed at the edge of a corn field, it’s here that Jason and Ashly Brand scurry to ready their own big green machine for the task that lies ahead.

Jason Brand didn’t inherit any acreage, nor is he one that can count generations of farmers before him.

Jason is anxious to get rolling. He knows there’s plenty of work to be done.

And, he knows the only way to get it done is to roll up his sleeves and get after it.

roll up his sleeves to crawl in the combine. At 33, this young entrepreneur is part of a new generation of farmers who splits his time between the fields and an off-farm job.

From the Ground Up Although Jason’s father grew up on a farm, his dad sold his part of the land to Jason’s aunts. With parents that divorced when he was young, Jason gleaned some knowledge of the agriculture way of life from his step-father and step-grandfather. After high school, Jason continued in the family business and fed his passion for hunting and wildlife every chance he got.

Little by little Jason accumulated some farm equipment and more acreage. He grew tired of renting out his own land. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It just wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t benefiting us at all,â&#x20AC;? he recalls.

And, Jason wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always appreciative of the way his tenants were caring for the land. So, he started caring for it himself but he never quit his day job to do so.

Instead, the young businessman finds a way to make the two occupations work hand-in-hand.

Being able to purchase newer equipment with the help of FCS Financial has enabled our operation to become more efficient and safer And, along the way he found a partner.

Working in Jasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s concrete business, Ashly would often bring lunch out to Jason in the field. Eventually, the two would get married and have since found they make a pretty good team.

Ashly grew up on a cattle and hay farm in Miller County. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d just jump in and do things,â&#x20AC;? Jason credits his wife. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to ask her to help me.â&#x20AC;?

Today, the two work side by side in both endeavors.

Married three years, Jason is a self-professed positive thinker while Ashly helps keep him grounded and provides the â&#x20AC;&#x153;what ifâ&#x20AC;? to every situation.

While growing up, Jason says he learned a lot about farming from his step-father, but is also selftaught in many aspects of his operation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got a lot of friends who are farmers and I ask a lot of questions,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I feel like you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t learn anything if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ask questions.â&#x20AC;?

Even with his childhood farming knowledge, Jason says the business has changed since then. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Back then, there was no â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Round-up Ready.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; It was all so much smaller scale.â&#x20AC;?

Jason has built his farming operation to include about 1,200 acres of owned and rented ground, spanning three counties and over 40 miles from end to end.

60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED

by Doris Noah MILES/ALPERS WEDDING Debra Miles and Franklin Alpers were married July 1, 2012 in the Bucklin Christian Church with Pastor Tim Mitchell officiating. The bride was given in marriage by her mother, Shirley Black.

The bridesmaids were Wendy White, Kensely Packman and Heather Vandergriff. Groomsmen were Freddie Alpers and Tony Packman.

The flower girl was Sara Brosdual.

Ring bearer was Tyler Brosdual.

Following the ceremony a cook out was hosted by the couple at their home on Maple Street. Family and friends enjoyed supper followed by a large wedding cake which had been baked and decorated by Linda Brosdual..

Mrs. Black chose a full length green dress for her daughter’s wedding. The bride wore a black and purple ensemble with the bridesmaids wearing black and white dresses.

NELLIE HILL TURNS 91 On August 12, 2012 some of Nellie Hill’s friends decided to surprise her by entertaining for her birthday.

Music was provided by Jimmy Overstreet from Kirksville, Dallas Kaschmieder from New Boston, David Overstreet from Moberly and Jack Wild from Bucklin. All gathered at Nellie’s home with their instruments early afternoon.

Jimmy’s wife, Mary Jane, had ordered a beautifully decorated birthday cake and a nephew, Cecil Overstreet, arrived with a dozen red roses.

Nellie’s family hosted a light luncheon for the guests. Family included daughters, Darline Briggs and Eva Levell and Eva’s husband Bruce, granddaughter Trella Hayden, and her husband, Frank ,as well as 5 year old great granddaughter, Brooklynn Fuller.

Brooklynn added to the festivities with some “impromptu” dances.

During the afternoon Dolores Baugher, Pat Noah and Janie Hosford came by to wish Nellie a ‘Happy Birthday”.

Charles and Patsie Hughes had come by earlier to add their best wishes and deliver a peck of fresh apples.

Nellie said her 91st birthday was , “A real good day.”

BIRTHDAY DEBBIE When Debbie Reid came in to church Sunday morning she discovered her entire family from Dearborn to Columbia there to surprise her on her birthday. After church Debbie’s husband Leighton prepared a Bar B Que dinner at their home on Lathrop Street here in Bucklin.

Guests were: Greg and Diane Hill, Mark, Sarah, Lake and Grace Reid, Columbia; Christian, Molly, Stephen, Abby, Joshua and Emma Tanner, Dearborn; Tim & Jenna Mitchell, James Lee Jenkins, Larry Vobornik, Otha Vobornik.

ON THE MEND Jerry Dale King was a patient at Boone Hospital last week for surgery. He is home to recuperate and is doing his therapy there.

Marilyn Stanley is scheduled for surgery on August 17. Marilyn’s birthday is also on the 17th. This is an unusual way to spend your birthday.

CARYLE AND PHYLLIS CARTER Caryle and Phyllis Carter of rural LaPlata recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their family. The couple was married in Cheyenne, Wyoming on August 7, 1952. For a few years their first home was the “Niehieser” place just west of their present home southeast of LaPlata in Macon County on Clover Ridge Angus Farm.

Phyllis met Caryle when she carried water on horseback to the men working in the fields. In the early years they had chickens, hogs, dairy cows and sheep, along with registered Angus cattle. They raised corn, soybeans, and wheat and clover hay for crops. Caryle spent his “free time” scything roadsides to make them look neat. Times have changed;

MEC 2012 QUEEN CROWNED

Miss Kaci Linebaugh, daughter Jeff and Audra Linebaugh of Marceline, was crowned the 2012 Miss MEC Queen. Miss Linebaugh was presented a tiara, sash, trophy, flowers and received $150.00 cash prize. Kaci was sponsored by the Westville Circle Club. The first runner-up was Alex Richardson, daughter of Paul and Connie Kuhman of Excello. She was presented with a trophy and received a $75.00 cash prize. Chosen second runner-up was Nora Dodd, daughter of Carl and Sheryl Dodd of Leonard. She was presented with a trophy and a $50.00 cash prize. Miss Congeniality was Alex Richardson, daughter of Paul and Connie Kuhman of Excello. She was presented a plaque for this honor. Judges for the contest were: Kevin Wheeler of Queen City, MO, Marcy Griswold of Centralia, MO and Tina Carmack of Hallsville, MO.

2,200 Attend Annual Meeting Of Macon Electric Cooperative Macon Electric Cooperative’s Annual Meeting attendance was estimated at nearly 2,200. There were 1,129 registered members.

The crowd enjoyed early entertainment by The Redhead Express. James Bolin, pastor of the College Mound Presbyterian Church and Chaplain for Hospice Compasses, gave the invocation and Redhead Express sang the National Anthem.

The final judging for the Miss MEC Queen Contest was held.

Doug Drake, General Manager, gave the Manager’s Report, which included information about how Macon Electric Cooperative is “Working Together” as directors and employees to meet the Cooperative’s mission, “to provide excellent service to our members in the most efficient manner possible.” The Director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture, Dr. John Hagler, also addressed those in attendance regarding the importance of agriculture in Missouri and the overall impact of agrelated jobs on our state’s economy.

Kemper Walker, President of the Board of Directors, conducted the business portion of the meeting. Three directors were elected for three-year terms; Kemper V. Walker, Northern Area; Harold E. Beach, Northeastern Area

and George Philip Saunders, Southeastern Area.

The Board also elected officers for the coming year; Kemper V. Walker, President, Harold E. Beach, Vice-President, Glenda Wood, Secretary/Treasurer and Larry Robuck, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer. The membership also voted on and passed six by-law amendments.

Members participated in Touchstone Energy hot air balloon rides, informational displays and a barbeque meal. Kids activities included: a balloon artist, the annual coloring contest, and a bounce house and ball pit.

The crowd was entertained throughout the evening by high energy musical talent of Redhead Express and the Walker Family Band.

The announcement was made of the “Meet the Need” Energy Star Appliance Giveaway winners.

The following members of Macon Electric will receive the appliance of their need: Brenda Denson of Clifton Hill, Genevieve Sharp of Marceline and Myra Taylor of La Plata.

Throughout the meeting prize drawings were held and sixteen $50 energy credits were given away to registered members. The $50 energy credit winners were: Stephen and Katherine Tucker of Anabel, Russell and Patricia Pillers of Bevier, Jimmie and Theresa Davolt of Macon,

Blake and Tori Larson of La Plata, Ronald and Charlene Harvey of Clarence, Bruce and Kimberly Elam of Macon, Gerald and Wanda Luntsford of Jacksonville, Loren and Frances Bond of Excello, John and Doris Bergfield of Anabel, Ronald Jacobs of Anabel, Wayne Burstert of New Cambria, Lloyd and Arlene Collins of Jacksonville, Michael and Dawn Llewellyn of Macon, Mike and Tracie Gittemeier of Cairo, Dean and Michele Vansickle of Macon and Steven Fischer of New Cambria.

Kids age 5-17 registered for an iPod Shuffle and Kindle Fire. This year’s winner of the Kindle Fire was Kamberly West of Atlanta, and the winner of the iPod Shuffle was Tyler Moore of Bucklin.

The winners of the 2012 Annual Meeting Coloring Contest were: (for kids entering kindergarten and first grade) Adellyn Newcomer, first place; Lilian Helm, second place and Mason Reed, third place; (for kids entering second and third grade) James Miller, first place; Kane Helm, second place and Sabrina Beauchum, third place; (entering fourth and fifth grade) Isabelle Llewellyn, first place; Quinn Ricker, second place and Frank Dryer, third place.
