Dilbert Biswell, La Plata, MO US REP. SAM GRAVES TO VISIT ADAIR COUNTY Congressman Sam Graves (RTarkio) will visit Adair County on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 from 11:15 to noon at “Jackson Country Connection,” a local pumpkin patch and corn maze.

The public is invited to meet the congressman as he makes a farm tour through his new district. Bob and Andy Jackson, owners, will serve as hosts for the event.

Graves is the current United States Congressman for Missouri’s Sixth Congressional District. Twelve new counties including Adair have been added to his current area, which includes 36 counties in the northern part of the state, from the Kansas to Illinois border.

Graves, a farmer, received more than 80% of the vote in the August 7 primary for his re-election. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Small Business Committee.

The Congressman also serves on the Transportation Committee and is one of only a handful of farmers in Congress.

LA PLATA EMERGENCY GENERATORS TESTING

ROLLOVER AT ATLANTA JUNCTION

Starting on Monday, August 13th the city of La Plata began conducting emergency generator testing and commissioning. The testing will continue throughout the week during daylight hours. Testing guidelines require the generators to run several hours with a range of power outputs.

Electrical power interruptions are not expected, but there is always the potential for random periods of brief power outages. On Tuesday evening, August 7, 2012 a two vehicle accident occured at the North junction of Atlanta, Highway 63 and Highway M. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Ethan Baker, 17 of Atlanta was westbound and failed to yield to a 2002 Saturn L100, driven by Ebeney Magruder, age 33 of Macon, headed southbound on 63. Baker struck Magruder, went off the right side of the road. Magruder went off the right side of the roadway, stuck a sign and overturned. Both vehicles were totaled and both drivers were transported to Samaritan Hospital in Macon, Missouri.

Baker with minor injuries and Magruder with moderate injuries.

The MSHP was assisted by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, Atlanta Fire Department and Atlanta First Responders.

Aaron David Doss

Nyra Coleen Sagaser

Aaron David Doss, 25, of Elmer, Missouri, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2012.

Aaron was born in Gunnison, CO, on June 12, 1987, the son of Ruby (Munden) Doss of La Plata, Missouri and Melvin Doss of Franklin, Missouri. On January 1, 2011, Aaron was united in marriage to Mandy K. Duncan.

Aaron is survived by his loving parents; his devoted wife, Mandy and four wonderful sons, Keegan Aaron Doss, Easton Gage Doss, Ayden Matthew Doss and Cruz Duncan. He also leaves behind six caring brothers and sisters, Wesley Adam Doss and Devon of Columbia, Missouri, Leah Nikole Bramel and Michael, South Korea, Kayla Rainey and friend Jake Hermanson, Indianola, Iowa, Nate Doss and Aubry, Joplin, Missouri, Savanah Doss, Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Matthew True, Texas.

He was an adoring uncle to his beloved nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly; Brooklynn Doss, Sylvia Rainey, Trey Collins, Carter Doss, Alyssa Bramel, Treven Collins, Wylie Bramel, Cinnamon St. Clair, Cutter St. Clair, Morgan St. Clair, Willy St. Clair, and Raegan St. Clair. He will be sadly missed by his in-laws, Wanda and David St. Clair, Elmer, brother and sister-in-law, Chris (Candy) St. Clair, Gifford and brother-in-law, Aaron St. Clair, Elmer, aunt and uncle Deb (Larry) Fredman, La Plata. Aaron had many aunts and uncles who cherished their nephew; Janet Pharr and John, Columbia; DeAnna Slaughter and David, Columbia; Mary O’Haver & Jeff, Kirksville; Gail Johnson and Floyd, Kirksville; Roberta O’Haver and Darryl, Greentop; Charlotte Bealmear, Marquand; Clay Doss and Linda, Glasgow, Belinda Doss, Moberly; and DeAnn Davidson, Fulton.

Aaron lived life with passion and enthusiasm and he shared these gifts with everyone by especially his cousins, Adrian Hunolt and Jamie, Bob Hunolt, Michael O’Haver and Stacy, Kelly O’Haver and Nicole, Lisa (Ambrosia) Howard & Jim, Amy (O’Haver) Morris and Shawn, Tami O’Haver and Kandice Kopp, Kyle O’Haver and Yesenia Campa, Josh Davis, K.D. Johnson and Kyle Jennings, Stephanie Bealmear and Stacy Bealmear. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Robert Munden and Darlene Gillespie and his paternal grandmother, Leah Doss. Aaron attended Kirksville schools and was a graduate from Adair County R-I, Novinger with the Class of 2005.

In 2007 he joined the United States Army, upon returning from the military he attended the Law Enforcement Training Institute in Columbia, MO, graduating in 2010. Aaron was an avid sportsman, who loved hunting, fishing, playing baseball and the great outdoors, he also loved the KC Chiefs, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Funeral service were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday (August 11, 2012) at Travis-Noe Funeral Home, with Jeff Dodson officiating. Music selections weree “Daddy’s Hands”, “Go Rest High On That Mountain”, “I Love Your Love the Most” and “Just

By Being You”.

Interment followed the service at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Hurdland, Missouri. Aaron was laid to rest next to his maternal grandmother, Darlene Gillespie. Pallbearers were Michael O’Haver, Kelly O’Haver, Bob Hunolt, Brian Easley, Bronson Moore and Gavin Howard.

Arrangements were under the direction of Travis Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, Missouri.

Nyra Coleen Sagaser, daughter of William Floyd and Nellie P. (Stark) Bealmer, was born near Macon, Missouri on December 18, 1933 and passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at her home in Princeton, Missouri at the age of 78 years.

Nyra was untied in marriage to James Sagaser on December 26, 1953. They lived in Atlanta, Missouri until moving to Princeton, Missouri in 1974. They were members of the Princeton United Methodist Church. Nyra had been employed at the Mercer County Library as a Librarian Assistant. She loved playing Bridge, golf and traveling. She was a 1951 graduate of Atlanta High School.

Nyra is survived by her husband, James of the home in Princeton; a son, Steven and his wife, Merrill of Atlanta, Missouri; two daughters, Connie Mandacina and her husband, Mike of The Village, Florida and Christy Campo and her husband, Michael of Lees Summit, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Whitlow, Stacie and Aimee Sagaser, Laura Shroyer, James and Adam Dixon and Sydney and Casey Campo; two great-grandchildren, Sophie and Rollie Shroyer; four brothers, Derwood and his wife, Carolyn Bealmer of Moberly, Missouri, Larry Bealmer of Columbia, Missouri, Mack and his wife, Karen Bealmer of Macon, Missouri and Billy and wife, Diana Bealmer of Macon, Missouri; two sisters, Sandra and husband, Bert Miller of Independence, Missouri and Evelyn Fuller of Clarence, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.

Nyra was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Theda Deatherage and Barbara Stump.

Funeral services were held Sunday (August 12, 2012) at 3:00 p.m. at the Elliott Funeral Home in Atlanta, Missouri, conducted by Pastor Dan Stratmann. Musical selections were “How Great Thou Art” and “In The Garden”.

The body was cremated with private family burial at a later date.

Gov. Jay Nixon took opening day of the 110th Missouri State Fair as an opportunity to announce a new book celebrating Missouri’s Century Farms.

The book, “Missouri’s Century Farms: Preserving Our Agricultural Heritage,” sponsored by Missouri Farm Bureau Federation, University of Missouri Extension and the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, food and Natural Resources (CAFNR), commemorates the 35th anniversary of the program. Governor Nixon contributed to the book and recognized the farming traditions passed from generation to generation and the families who have attained this special recognition.

“Throughout our state’s history, Missouri’s farm families have passed down their legacy of dedication, perseverance and innovation to future generations,” Nixon wrote. “Their tenacity through good times and tough times alike is a true testament to the great men and women of our Century Farms who are pillars of Missouri’s deeply rooted agriculture tradition.”

Highlighting the history of the Century Farm program, the 400-page book includes the history of Missouri agriculture as well as personal recollections of individuals whose families have successfully transferred their passion for farming to the next generation.

Anna Bell (Agee) Miller 1936-2012

Anna Bell Miller, 75, of Macon, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday (August 7, 2012) at Samaritan Hospital in Macon.

The daughter of James Walter and Opal Pearl (Allen) Agee, she was born November 9, 2012 in Elmer, Missouri. On September 28, 1962 in Kirksville, Missouri, Anna was united in marriage to Cletus Lavern Miller who preceded her in death on January 29, 2011.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Richard Agee.

Anna is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Trent and Dawn Miller of Edgerton, Missouri and Wade and Nina Miller of St. Charles, Missouri; one brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Donna Agee of Neodesha, Kansas; two sisters and brothers-inlaw, Sheryl and Jerry Skinner and Patricia and Vern Carter all of O’Fallon, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Aaron, Luke, Amanda, Nicholas, Cassy, Nikki, Kerstin, Ryan and Craig, as well as nine great-grandchildren, Darren, Van, Makayla, Caleigh, Aven, Tyler, Makenzie, Kaycee and Dillian.

Anna graduated from Kirksville High School and attended two years at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College. She lived on a farm near Green Castle, Missouri most of her life and made a career in nursing, working first at Laughlin Hospital and last a number of years for Grim-Smtih Hospital. Anna’s hobbies included painting and collecting glass chickens.

Funeral service were held at 5:00 p.m. Saturday (August 11, 2012) at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, with Pastor Mark DeShon presiding.

Family received friends one hour before the service on Saturday in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home.

Anna was cremated following her service and will be interred at a later date in the Green Castle Cemetery in Green Castle.

Well the primaries are over and some people are happy and some people are not. My mamma always told me “if you don’t vote, don’t bitch”. So enough said on that subject. Good luck to all candidates in the November election.

It’s time to get those bbq grills back out, the weather has finally broke and people are so anxious to be spending time outdoors without melting.

It’s great to see people walking, riding bikes and playing in the park again.

Mother Nature sure was a little ticked off at us for some odd reason, so who did it? Cowboy Up? I won’t tell, just don’t do it again.

I went to see George Jones on Friday night, he is one of my all time favorite performers and has a great voice. This man has been in my life for years, as my ma and pa listened to him, as well as the Oakridge Boys, the Statler Brothers, etc. I bet that brings back some memories for people, with their 8-track tapes. LOL I remember my brother having a whole collection of those gaudy clumsy things, now a days the advancement of electrical musical equipment makes the 8 track look like a giant.

Randy, my right-hand man, sometimes my left hand, depending on the day. LOL was interested in a small device called a Ipod Shuffle. He was trying to purchase one on the Swap Shop, but left the office before he got it bought.

Just so happens that I was working the ER that very same night and was on my phone on Facebook and the very same one became available so I purchased it immediately for $20 and the kid brought it right over to the hospital for me. He musta been broke.

LOL Anywho, I opened this tiny little box, looked about the size of a ring box and in it was a USB connector cord about 2” long and a tiny little silver device that was about the size of a piece of Bazooka bubble gum, actually I think it was even smaller than that, but a little larger than a Chicklet. Anyway this device is supposed to hold hundreds of songs that you download from the internet and then buy a pair of headphones to complete the ensemble.

JEFFCOAT I was amazed. I said “Where’s the battery?”, nope, no battery, it just charges as you download songs. Hmmmm!!!! First of all, I’d lose it. Second of all, I couldn’t figure out how to download the songs. And finally, I don’t’ have any headphones.

LOL But, Randy was just as happy as if it was Christmas and he was 5-years old. Good for him. He works hard and I sometimes throw things his way like that so he knows I appreciate him.

He does a lot of stuff for me, outside the box.

Sometimes it’s the little things that matter the most!! Thanks Randy.

Things are gearing up around town for the annual Soybean Festival and we will have a complete schedule in next weeks paper. So make sure you contact the La Plata Promotional Committee if you have an event to schedule or would like to be a vendor.

The circus will be in town on Friday and I am so looking forward to taking my granddaughter, Quinci Jo to her first circus. I know she’s only 5 months, but I wanted to go anyway, just an excuse, hehe!! So, will I see you there? I hope so!

I also wanted to toss in a BIG THANK YOU to all of our readers for all the great compliments and pats on the back for our first Regional paper that was mailed last week. All of us here at The Home Press worked very hard to get your 24 page edition out and those from the Paris and Canton papers contributed a lot of hard work as well. We look forward to bringing you another one next month.

Superintendent’s Perspective

by Dr. Craig Noah The La Plata R-II School District has a rich history of high student achievement.

When you look at our district you will see a talented and dedicated faculty that is always willing to go above and beyond to meet the needs of our students. Our students are some of the best and brightest in the state of Missouri and it is our goal to ensure they are prepared to succeed at the highest level possible.

We are also fortunate to have a strong support staff. These individuals are so important to our district and we couldn’t help our students achieve at the highest level without the support from our bus drivers, cooks, nurses, custodians, paraprofessionals, secretaries and maintenance personnel.

It is a privilege and an honor to work with such dedicated professionals.

As we begin the 2012-2013 school year I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Home Press for allowing us to submit articles on a monthly basis. At the La Plata R-II School District, we strive to keep our community informed and educated about matters related to the education of our students. Our intent is to share information

and at the same time to keep everyone informed in relation to upcoming items that may be of interest.

Macon County Back-ToSchool Health And Safety Fair A Great Success In spite of the heat, 671 people attended the Macon County Back-toSchool Health and Safety Fair on Saturday, August 4, at the Macon County Park EXPO Building.

Almost 300 bags of school supplies were distributed to Macon County children entering Kindergarten through 5th grades.

All remaining school supplies were divided among the schools, public and private, in Macon County to assist children moving into our school districts and having the supplies they need the first day of school. More than 40 exhibitors provided school supplies and a variety of

fun items for school-aged children and their younger and older siblings. All of the children were invited to participate in the games, crafts, and exhibits on hand including a reverse dunking booth and the rescue vehicles. Smokey the Bear, Sparky the Dog, and Spike the Bulldog all made guest appearances.

The Macon County Health Department provided a car-seat safety check station at Floral Hall. The Planning Committee was very happy to welcome so many Macon County families to this important event to get every child off to a “Smart Start to a Great School Year”!

Pastor’s Corner Sometimes those who do not have faith in Jesus wonder why those with faith follow this person named Jesus. Why do we have faith in this man?

It is not because Jesus provides for our physical needs. There are those here in earth who do that, many of whom are connected to government programs. It is not just because Jesus performed miracles while he was on the earth. Jesus performed many miracles while he was here, all of which were witnessed by many people who never became followers of Jesus.

It has a lot to do with deeper things of life rather than physical things. t is because Jesus loves us that he came from his place with God in heaven to be with us. It has to do with our belief that Jesus paid the price for our sins. Because of our failures to be the people God wants to be, Jesus died on the cross. God raised him from the dead after hew as in the tomb three days.

Jesus taught his followers for forty more days and then returned to heaven.

Jesus provides the answer to many of the deeper questions of life that we have. Jesus is the answer

to for that within us that is searching for a power or a person that is greater than us that we can turn to in times of questioning and in times of distress. Just as bread is necessary to sustain our physical bodies, Jesus is necessary to sustain our internal lives. The healing miracles Jesus did were done to make people whole and to point us to the one who can make us spiritually whole. That one is God. God loves each of us despite of how we live our lives. God wants to make us whole in every way. Will receive that love today?

We received one and 2/10 inches of rain on Wednesday and the temperatures have fallen down to a comfortable range Hohenadel Hill has more wild cat problems.

In our back yard we saw a mother and baby wild cat in a nearby tree Friday morning. Our neighbor saw a not full grown black panther type kitten along the road near the Hidden Hollow Conservation area, on his way home from Elmer All the rabbits are gone and birds are afraid to come down to the ground to eat. So far our Henny Penny, the chicken, has escaped the cats.

NEMO Fair - Elizabeth Larson of the Oklahoma Indians 4-H club entered many projects in the NEMO Fair. She entered Timmy, her rooster, in the Poultry show. She also entered a dozen white eggs, which won a Poultry Trophy for the best white dozen eggs.

In Cake Decorating she entered a “Nature Cake� which won 2 blue ribbons.

In Photography, her “St. Louis Arch� picture won 2 blue ribbons, the “Fireworks� photo earned 2 red ribbons, and the “Bird� won 2 blue ribbons.

Elizabeth is the daughter of Tori and Blake Larson of rural La Plata.

NEMO Fair - Kirk Larson, son of Tori and Blake Larson, entered a project in Livestock Judging in the NEMO Fair.

His poster entitled “Carcass Components of a Market Steer� won 2 blue ribbons and earned the Livestock Judging trophy. It was also selected to go to the Missouri State Fair. Kirk is a first year member of Oklahoma Indians 4-H Club.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: ‘Brad Buck Paint & Body’

A new business has made La Plata their hometown. Opening in March at 515 E. Moore Street, Brad Buck Paint and Body is up and running and accepting new customers and welcoming those that he has already helped out previously at other locations.

Buck has been in the automotive business since he was old enough to walk into Buck Bros. Sunnyslope in Kirksville, where

his father, Eddie Buck and uncles, W.R. and Mike are owners. This family has been in the automotive business in some fashion for several years and that includes racing their own vehicles down 156 to running their racecars throughout several states.

So, Brad is no new-comer to the world of automobiles.

With eight years experience under his belt work-

ing for a previous body shop in Macon, Buck brings his experience to La Plata by offering a full body shop including Custom Paint Jobs, Restorations and Collision Repair.

The body shop uses quality paint products and Buck is I-Car and ASE certified.

As owner of the shop, Buck says that he will be happy to work with your insurance company for your collision repair. He

says that since he is working alone his production is low, but that makes his work high quality. He throws in that he does detailing and offers that great hometown hospitality.
