In July, a three-person state visiting team visited the eight district farm families. Using the same criteria as for county and district families, they will select a state Farm Family of the Year. winner from Arkansas will be entered in the Southeastern Farmer of the Year Program. This is a prestigious awards program honoring some of the best farmers in the Southeastern United States.

LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT July 31, 2014 – Officer Greg Miller was dispatched to the intersection of West Maxwell Street and North Monroe for a two-vehicle accident with the road blocked.

Upon arrival, Officer Miller met with Mrs. Angela Simpson and Mrs. Jamie Blevins, which stated they were both the drivers of the vehicles in the accident.

Blevins said that she did not see the stop sign at the intersection, which is obscured with limbs from a tree.

Simpson said that she saw the other vehicle was not going to stop and swerved over to try to keep from getting hit. She was hit in the right rear quarter panel causing her to spin out of control and come to rest facing south in the north lane.

Simpson changed her rear tire on the scene, and was able to drive her truck away. Blevins had enough damage that she called for a wrecker to come get her car from White Hall. Her car was pushed off in a parking lot just off North Monroe, so the traffic lane could be reopened.

No citations were issued because the stop sign on the highway was not visible coming down West Maxwell Street.

August 5 – Officer Jody Chapman, after viewing security cameras at Conoco, determined that Vehicle #1 was pumping diesel at the pumps on the north side of Conoco. Vehicle #2 pulled around the pumps and started to back up. At this time Vehicle #1 drove east through the pumps and circled around the pumps and behind Vehicle #2 while it was baking up. The trailer of Vehicle #2 struck the rear driver’s side wheel well of Vehicle #1.

August 6 - Officer Jennifer Crossett responded to a vehicle accident. Vehicle 1 (Tyra Layman) and Vehicle 2 (Johnny Owens) were both traveling West on East Second Street, stopped at four way stop at East Second Street and South Main.

Layman (V1) stated that she had her foot on the brake and went to light a cigarette and her foot slipped off the brake and hit Owens motorcycle.

There were no injuries and photos were taken of the damage.

August 6 – While on patrol, Officer Billy Truax was dispatched to 1011 S. Harrison Street in reference to someone being disorderly. Upon arrival, the Victim approached Truax. The Victim stated “I don’t know what y’all can do with him, but I want him off my property”. The Victim was pointing at the Suspect while speaking to Truax. The Suspect approached the Officer and asked, “Can I catch a charge if I refuse to pick up all the stuff I threw down for the animals to eat?” Truax advised the Suspect that he threw what appeared to be trash on the ground and he could be charged with littering, if the Victim wanted to file charges. The Suspect then started to pick up all the trash that was on the ground. The Victim asked if after the Suspect leaves, would Officer Truax mind riding by his residence throughout the night to make sure the Suspect did not come back. The Victim, as well as Officer Truax, told the Suspect he was no longer welcome at the residence. The Suspect stated that he understood. Officer Truax advised the Suspect that if he was caught back at the Victims residence he would be arrested and charged with Criminal Trespassing.

The Suspect stated that he would not be back.

At approximately 2:17 a.m. Officer Truax was dispatched back to 1011 S. Harrison in reference to the Suspect being back at the residence causing another disturbance. Upon arrival, the Victim stated that the Suspect just left driving west on 13th Street. The Victim was advised he would attempt to locate the Suspect and advise him once again to stay away. The Victim stated again that he did not want the Suspect back at his residence, and to keep patrolling by his residence to make sure he did not return. At this time Truax was unable to locate the Suspect.

Later, Truax was patrolling S. Harrison Street when he noticed the Suspect’s vehicle sitting in the driveway off 1011 S. Harrison Street. Truax pulled in behind the vehicle and exited his vehicle. The Suspect was on the ground, beside the driver’s door of his vehicle. The Suspect got up and stated, “I’m leaving. I won’t be coming back over here anymore.” Truax advised the Suspect that he was under arrest for Criminal Trespassing and placed him in handcuffs. The Suspect began cursing Officer Truax and the Victim of the residence. The Suspect was advised that he was told earlier not to go back to the residence, and that was the third time Truax had been called there because of him. The Suspect said “I wouldn’t have been there then if I thought you had meant it when you said you would arrest me.”

The Suspect was then transported to the Arkansas County Detention Center and booked for Criminal Trespassing. Upon exiting the vehicle, the Suspect became very loud and began cursing everyone around.

At that time Disorderly Conduct was added to the charges.

Obituary Billy Miller Billy Miller was born April 8, 1940 in Pampas, AR to O. H. “Runt” and Annie Bagwell Miller. He passed away August 9, 2014 at the Heart Hospital in Little Rock. He was preceded in death by his parents, older brother, Joe Henry Miller and Leonard “Little Boy” Ticey, who was raised as a brother by his family.

Survivors are his wife, Vera Sherman Miller, who he married March 28, 1958 and four children: Suzette Miller (Wade Powell) of Hot Springs, Mikki Milliken (Kevin), Billy II “Little Billy” (Donna) and Scott (Nancy Jo) all of DeWitt; grandchildren: Ty and Tosha Simpson, Payton Miller, Bailey Simpson, Tiffani and Damon Burns and their six children. Special friends: Wilford and Dorty Simpson and Gin Parker. Also His Bankers: Flora, Mary and Dale who helped Billy be the “Farmer” he loved to be.

Funeral services was held10:00 AM Monday, August 11th at Essex Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Bayou Meto Cemetery. Visitation was held 9:00 to 10:00 AM before the service.

Obituary Schyler Leibrock Schyler LeAnn Leibrock, 54, died on August 5, 2014. She was born on June 18, 1960, in Fort Smith to Jack DeWitt and Alice Hamilton DeWitt.

Schyler was a dental hygienist for 32 years, and was very proud to have worked that long because not many dental hygienists do.

Schyler’s closest friends described her as strong willed, smart, sassy, unique, and most important - well loved.

Schyler is survived by her husband, Scott Leibrock; son, Hayden Leibrock; one brother, Scott DeWitt; and friends to numerous to count. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Greg and Stuart DeWitt.

Visitation was held Friday, August 8 from 12 - 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of DeWitt with a memorial service celebrating Schyler’s life at 1:00 p.m. Cremation arrangements by Essex Funeral Home.

Obituary Ruby Beecher Ruby Jeanette Williams Beecher, 72 of Stuttgart, died Sunday at Lincoln Heights Healthcare in Star City. She was born May 17, 1942 in DeWitt to the late B.D. and Ruby Hayes Williams. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in San Marcos, TX. Also preceding her in death was her first husband, John Williams; second husband, Charles Beecher; and sister, Peggy Williams Espinoza.

Survivors include son, Glenn (Michelle) Williams of Omaha, NE; daughter, Lisa (Jodi) Parham of York, PA; brother, Barry Williams of North Richland Hills, TX; sister, Brenda Wilcox of Star City; 7 grandchildren, Casie Williams, Christy Covey, T.J. Williams, Calabe Williams, Abby Williams, Megan Riley and Noah Parham; 7 great grandchildren.

On the TV news, they kept talking about the moon being bigger and brighter at certain time so I thought i would check it out. So, Jay and I stepped out on the porch to look. RECIPE:

TACO SOUP 1-1/2 pounds ground beef (I use same amount of chopped, cooked chicken instead) 1 envelope taco seasoning 2 cans whole kernel corn, undrained 2 cans ranch style or chili beans, undrained (I prefer ranch style) 2 cans diced tomatoes, undrained Crushed tortilla chips and shredded cheddar cheese ( use shredded colby jack & montaray cheese) Flour tortillas, warmed In a Dutch oven or a large saucepan, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink, drain; (Can also cook your chicken this way). Stir in taco seasoning, corn beans and tomatoes.cover and simmer for15 minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally.

2014 Arkansas Rice Expo Recipe Winner A love of Mexican food and her family’s habit taking nearly every meal at home helped fuel a recipe that satisfied both of those needs and a victory in the 2014 Arkansas Rice Expo recipe contest.

“I was very shocked. Really, really shocked,” said Tiffany Aaron of Cleburne County, who took first place with her Grilled Rice and Black Bean Burritos with Creamy Cilantro Dipping Sauce.

Aaron’s winning dish earned her a featured spot in the 2015 Arkansas Rice Expo Cookbook, $200 and a gift basket with rice. The three judges –South on Main restaurant’s Executive Chef Matt Bell, Food Writer for Sync and Arkansas Life Magazine Emily Van Zandt, and Little Rock Soiree and Arkansasbusiness.com Writer Lee Hogan – all agreed that Aaron’s dish deserved to win.

“On the winner, it seemed like we had the same opinion,” Hogan said.

While this wasn’t her first time competing in a cooking contest, it was her first time winning first place.

Aaron said she had previously met some of the contestants and knew that they could cook really well.

“They know what the judges were judging,” she said.

Developing a rice burrito dish was a no-brainer.

“We love Mexican food,” she said “I have five kids and we really don’t eat out at all. I cook every meal everyday.”

As the 2014 winner, she cannot compete in the 2015 contest. However, Aaron said she encourages her mother and kids to compete next year.

The second place winner for the contest was Susan Bensberg from Ouachita County, who made Ginger Curry Lime Chicken Salad with Edamame and Rice.

“I never expected to win the top 10 when I submitted my recipe, and I won the second place,” said Bensberg, who is an adjunct faculty in the music department at Southern Arkansas University.

The summer weather and her love for Arkansas inspired her to make a cool salad that has lime, ginger, water chestnut, as well as Arkansas grown long grain brown rice and edamame.

“I cook things from scratch,” she said. She discovered the ‘pasta method’ to cook rice by putting a cup of rice in 12 cups of water that has been brought to boil. Simmer the rice until tender – about 15 minutes for white rice and 20-25 minutes for brown rice. She drained it and put the rice back in the pot to let it steam.

The rice won’t stick together and it’ll have a good flavor, she said. Judge and chef Matt Bell agreed that the ‘pasta method’ with a lot of water and a little rice is the best way to cook rice.

Bensberg is planning to compete in next year’s Rice Recipe Contest as well as joining the tabletop centerpiece contest.

Third place went to Alice May Johnson of Arkansas County with her Rice and Broccoli Salad. Johnson said she wants to compete again next year.

“I’m thrilled to death because I can come back next year,” she said, of her much-complimented dish. “Every time we have potluck (at work), I always make the broccoli salad,” she said. For the contest, she added rice to the salad.

Johnson shared her secret for what she called the ‘perfect rice’: boil 14 cups of water, a table spoon of salt, and four cups of white rice cooked for 15 minutes in an un-lidded Dutch Oven on the low heat stovetop.

After it’s done, remove from heat, pour into a big pan with holes in it and run hot water over to the rim to

rinse the rice. “What’s unique is it’s with no lid,” she said.

“There are a lot of different ways to cook rice,” said Rosemary Rodibaugh, nutrition professor in the Family & Consumer Science Department for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

“The best way is a matter of personal preference.”

The bottom line is that rice can be an important part of an overall healthy diet. Rice is in the grains’ group, one of the 5 main food groups on MyPlate, a nutrition guide by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. New Urgent Care Clinic Opens in Stuttgart

Adult Food Care Program (CACFP) The Adult Food Care Program can offer supportive services to group settings that are located outside of the individual’s home or in group living arrangements that do not operate more than twenty-four (24) hours in a day. Adult day care centers that are Federally, state, or locally licensed and approved to provide day care services for functionally impaired adults or individuals who are sixty (60) years of age or older.

Urgent Care of Stuttgart is a new acute care walkin clinic now open on the corner of 22nd street and Park Avenue in Stuttgart. Urgent Care clinics have become popular across Arkansas and other states, as they offer patients the ability to get quick medical treatment for urgent illnesses and injuries that are not serious enough for a visit to the emergency room, yet cannot wait for an appointment.

“Our clinic was opened in an effort to provide Stuttgart and the surrounding communities a practical and efficient way to get life’s unexpected medical problems managed without having to rearrange an entire day,” said Eddy Hord, MD. He went on to state “As government and insurance companies continue to place tougher restrictions on how we practice, it is getting harder to take care of everyone’s healthcare needs. For example, seeing a patient with a chronic medical problem like diabetes is generally much more time consuming than a patient with a sore throat. It’s a challenge to try to see everyone in a timely fashion and do it well.”

Urgent Care of Stuttgart will be treating patients with a wide range of injuries and illnesses, such as coughs and colds, pediatric illnesses, routine shots and even broken bones, to name a few. Poultry Testing Clinic Set for August 21 The 2014 Arkansas County Fair is just around the corner, and in preparation, poultry must be bled before they can enter the fairgrounds on September 7th and 8th. A Poultry Bleeding Clinic is scheduled for Thursday, August 21. It will be held at the Arkansas County Extension Office from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.

All poultry, which includes domesticated game birds, turkeys, pheasants, guineas, and quail, must be tested for Pullorum-Typhoid within 90 days of the exhibition. (Waterfowl does not require testing.)

The only exception to the rule will be the 4-H Poultry Chain birds. However, if you are the owner of a 4-H Poultry Chain bird or birds, and it has been

mixed in with a non-Poultry Chain bird, then it is required that your bird or birds get tested. If your 4-H Poultry Chain birds are on the same property as your last year 4-H Poultry Chain birds they must be tested. Ankle bands will be attached once the bird is tested and the number on the band will be recorded.

These bands must remain on the bird for entry into the fair.

This clinic is open to all eligible persons without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status. Coleman Named 2014-15 Miss Arkansas Rice Madison Coleman of Brinkley (Monroe County) was named 2014-15 Miss Arkansas Rice on Saturday at the Brinkley Convention Center. Coleman will be a senior at Lee Academy in Marianna this fall. She is the daughter of Shannon Coleman of Brinkley.

Josie Brown of Wynne (Cross County) was first runner-up, and second runner-up was Anna Thrash of Conway (Faulkner County). Other county winners participating in the state finals were Lizzy Bronson of DeWitt (Arkansas County), Brittany Roedel of Jonesboro (Craighead County) and Gennie Bariola of Carlisle (Lonoke County).

The goal of the Miss Arkansas Rice program is to encourage interest in rice promotion and to publicize the importance of the Arkansas rice industry to the state’s economy. Contestants were judged on their promotion activities and knowledge of the rice industry. They also cooked a rice dish at the competition on which they were judged.

Madison’s recipe was “Chocolate Rice Parfait.�

The Arkansas Rice Council sponsors the annual contest in cooperation with Arkansas Farm Bureau and the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.

Arkansas’ rice industry supports 2,500 rice farms, employs more than 35,000 Arkansans and contributes over $4 billion annually to the state’s economy.

Arkansas Farm Bureau is a nonprofit, private advocacy organization of more than 190,000 families throughout the state working to improve farm and rural life.

This was the second year the oldies, graduates from 1996-2004, played the new-

A Message to Church Members

By William Wood It would stagger the mind to know how many people go to church, and some of them on a regular basis, yet they are not Christians!

Knowing the response this statement will bring, I will answer it in the beginning! Some will say, “Who do you think you are to make such a statement, you are not our judge!”

The statement is not to make us a judge. it is made as one who knows that figs do not grow on thorn bushes! The statement is not made to condemn, but rather to bring some into the light of the truth.

It is also being made by having experienced the difference between a church member and Christian! All of my growing up years I was a church member, but I did not become a Christian until I was thirty-eight years old. Perhaps one reason The Lord allowed that to be so, was so I could write this sermon today, and others like it!

If you are satisfied with your church membership, but do not believe in Holiness as the Bible teaches it, then you need to be born again!

Nicodemus was a church member, but Jesus told him he was not a Christian! And this master of Israel was apparently getting old, for he said, “How can a man be born again when he is old? (John 3:1-10) Jesus told him, it has nothing to do with the birth you experienced from your mother! You were born by your mother, and from the fallen nature of Adam, we all came into the world lost and separated from God! But we are all offered a new birth into the Kingdom of God. It is not a new flesh body, but a new Spirit in this same body. It is God’s Spirit coming in to replace the faulty spirit we received at our physical birth.

You may be saying, “I don’t understand that! Neither does any man understand it.

Jesus said, “It’s like the wind that blows, we don’t know where it comes from, or where it goes.”

Thank God we don’t have to understand it. All we need to know is that there is something wrong with our character that we can’t fix. We can’t take the pigs nature out of him and put a lamb’s spirit back in him.

No one but God can replace our fallen nature with His Holy Spirit, and make us new creations in Christ Jesus.

Is this absolutely necessary? Jesus said, “Without it we cannot enter into the Kingdom of God!” Does that answer your question?

Every thinking person knows that this world is headed into total chaos, and it is the bounden duty of every God Called Minister to tell you that church membership will not save you from it!

It is not a matter of some of us being better than some others. It is a matter of us recognizing our great need and asking The Lord to forgive us our sins and give us His Nature!

If there be an honest person who reads this sermon, and should ask, “How do I know if I have that new birth, then let me give you this advice. Find you a minister that you know has himself been born again and seek his advice. But be sure he is a man that is preaching Holiness in the fear of God! (2nd Corths.

7:1) This man can lead you to Jesus Christ, but beware of any minister who does not preach Holiness!

You know as well as I do friends, that there are preachers who do not preach Holiness, nor pay need to it.

They also need the new birth, and our sincere prayer is that they may experience it.

He Knows

By Tom Smith “He knows.”

That’s really the bottom-line conclusion Jesus came to that day in His “Sermon on the Mount” when He talked about not worrying about this-or-that (Matthew 6:19-34). He warned against “laying up earthly treasures that succumb to rust, rot and robbers” (vv.19-21). And, then He reminded them of the importance of “clear vision” (God’s perspective on things) versus “evil vision,” which springs from a darkened, depraved mind (vv.22-23).

In vv.25-32 He talked of three things that so often consume most of our time and money: consumption (“what you shall eat”), clothes (“what you shall wear”) and countenance (“how you look”). And, in each one of them He said, “Don’t worry about these—for your Heavenly Father knows you have need of them” (v.32).

Think about it: Statistics show that the average food bill per person in the United States is right at $300 per month. But, when you throw in those times of eating out, having guests over for a meal, etc., most likely that total is even higher.

Thus, for some folks going grocery shopping is a worrisome experience. Rising prices on just the basic commodities (e.g., milk, bread, eggs, etc.) put a strain on the budget and those on fixed income often get “sticker shock” whenever they enter the store.

The same is true for clothes. The Census Bureau reports an average of 3.8% is spent annually on clothing in each home in the U.S. Thus, a total of around $2,000 is spent per year if the average income is $50,000.

And, the third area (“countenance”) also consumes much of our disposable income. When you consider the amount spent on exercise equipment, gym memberships, sports clothing and shoes, diet foods, etc., the figure is astounding. And, when you throw in how much we spend on “looking good”—e.g., barber/beautician, tanning salons, cosmetics, etc.— it’s easy to see why Jesus cautioned us on worrying about such things.

Take “consumption,” for instance.

We know we have to have food to eat. And, we know it’s expensive to feed a family of three or more. But, too often we buy the wrong types of food—those full of calories and carbs—which end up causing

up to gain weight. . .which causes us to have to buy new clothes. . .which then leads to buying exercise equipment and/or gym memberships we won’t use.

Much better if we ate healthier and smaller portions.

Although fruits and vegetables may seemingly add to the grocery bill, in reality they’re much better for us than processed or easy-to-fix meals you pop in the microwave. Couple that with regular exercise and you’ll soon see the pounds begin falling off, which will help you get back into some of those clothes in your closet that “shrank” sometime in the past.

Likewise, too often we worry about our clothes—not the fact that we don’t have anything to wear—but the “type” clothes we wear.

We want the latest label. The name-brand.

The hottest tennis shoe.

The “in” duds that everyone else is wearing.

And, somehow we feel inferior if we don’t have them.

But, dear Reader, such worrying is sinful. We should be thankful that we have clothes—any clothes—to wear, for there are some folks in the world who’d love to have anything that wasn’t threadbare or shoes that didn’t have holes in the soles.

And, Jesus especially warned against worrying about our “countenance,” i.e., how we look. He said “Who of you, by worrying, can add even a single 1” to your height?” (v.27); yet, still we worry about our hair color or if ours is falling out. We worry about wrinkles, sagging skin, expanding waistlines, etc., forgetting that such is vanity.

“Quit worrying about such things,” Jesus said.

“Much better,” He added, “to trust the Heavenly Father, knowing He knows what you need.”

Here’s hoping we’ll do that this week as we pray the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” Maybe then we’ll spend more time “giving thanks in all things” (I Thessalonians 5:18) instead of worrying about things that ultimately won’t matter.

Senator Jonathan Dismang Column Arkansas prison officials are proposing to build a new 1,000 bed unit with plenty of secure, isolated cells for repeat offenders and inmates who continuously cause trouble.

The projected cost is between $75 million and $100 million. Under the state constitution the legislature has ultimate authority to determine spending by state agencies, and will consider the proposal during the 2015 regular session.

The session convenes in January, but in October legislators will began a detailed review of all spending requests in preparation for writing an overall state budget next year.

The Correction Department operates state prison units, and the Board of Correction oversees the department.

The Board recently voted to seek funding for the new unit, with an estimated operating budget of $19 million a year.

A maximum security unit for inmates who consistently cause management problems would be more expensive because it would have more individual cells than prison units with barracks style housing.

One possible source of funding, if approved by lawmakers, would be an increase in license plate fees. Revenue could finance a bond issue.

The Board anticipates that cities and towns will bid to become the site of the new prison, because it will create about 230 jobs. The unit will take up about 400 acres.

The Arkansas inmate population is more than 17,000 and growing. One reason for a recent growth spurt is that prison officials tightened parole policies. Now, inmates who are out of prison on parole must comply with stricter rules about reporting to parole officers and attend-

ing court-ordered drug treatment and counseling.

Due to the tighter policies imposed in the past 12 months there has been a spike in the number of parolees who have been sent back to prison.

Another reason for prison overcrowding is that more than 5,000 inmates, or about a third of the Arkansas inmate population, are serving life sentences without parole or sentences that are so long they will never be released. This is a sizeable bloc of inmates that will never be released to make room for new ones, according to the director of the Correction Department.

Prison overcrowding is an issue that legislators and the Correction Department have had to cope with for years. Most recently, in a special session earlier this year the legislature approved spending an additional $6.3 million a year to

open 60 more prison beds.

More than 4,000 people are employed by state prisons, which include more than 20 prison units, administrative facilities and work release centers.

Arkansas recently hosted the annual meeting of the Southern Legislative Conference, which was attended by legislators and policy makers from 15 southern state and border states. During a study session on prisons it was reported that there are more than 577,000 inmates incarcerated in the southern states, compared to about 325,000 in 1993.

Arkansas was one of the states whose inmate population has grown in recent years. Several states have seen a decline in their prison population because they are implementing drug treatment programs and reducing the amount of a sentence that inmates must serve in order to become eligible for parole.

Benefits of Evangelism Pastor Steve Ellison I just returned from a week of sharing the gospel at the motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. I saw a lot of indecency and profanity but I was pleasantly surprised at the general lack of animosity.

I cannot say that the response was generally positive because disdain was the most common response. However, only a few people were downright antagonistic. I was impressed by the lack of belligerent drunks. I did speak with many who were impaired to some degree by alcohol and/or illegal drugs. However, I never felt physically threatened. I must tell you that I was strictly downtown, just outside the bars, not in them. Also, I did not go out to the more crude locations, such as the notorious campgrounds.

Our gospel presentations were purposefully brief. We first secured the prospect’s permission to share a three minute personal story. The story was not exactly memorized but it was rehearsed.

The plan was to mention man’s sinful state, Christ’s sinless life, death, burial, and resurrection at least two times during the three minute story. Obviously, that is not the best of circumstances but it does plant seeds. It was far more successful than I had ever dreamed. As I look back over my life, I now see that I have overlooked many opportunities to share the gospel because I assessed the situation and decided there was not enough time. I must note that many of my conversations went much longer than three minutes. However, none did so without the permission of the other person. The three minute personal story emphasizes our sinfulness and God’s provision. At this point, the Holy Spirit will be convicting of sin, righteousness, and judgment. The listener will either accept or reject the message. Upon rejection, we simply asked permission to pray briefly for the listener and sent

them on their way. If the listener indicated a willingness to hear more, we were free to share at length about how to enter into a personal relationship with Christ. What a blessing and a privilege it was to be able to share the love and forgiveness available in the person of Jesus Christ. I expected this part of the ministry but prior to arriving I did not take time to consider some additional benefits.

Many, many people responded to the presentation of the gospel, by claiming that they were in fact already Christians.

Certainly many were and many were not. There is no way for us to determine that. However, even a cursory glance at their current condition gives reason for doubt. Thus, it was not possible (nor will it ever be) for one person to accurately evaluate another person’s relationship to Christ. Obedience to Christ and fruit bearing will clearly indicate their state of fellowship with Christ but not the ex-

istence of a relationship with Christ. I am firmly convinced that we shared the gospel with many unconverted people who were truly converted on the spot. I am firmly convinced that we shared the gospel with many people who at that point truly believed they were converted, but because of the planted seeds will later become convicted about their lack of relationship with Christ. I believe that we shared Christ with many who are Christians but they long ago left their first love and are walking in open rebellion. It is our hope and prayer that hearing the gospel presentation will prompt them to begin walking with Christ again. I believe that we shared with Christians who are not in open rebellion but are not sharing the gospel. We hope and pray that hearing our presentation will cause them to examine their own failure to share the hope that is found only in Christ. pastorsteve8800@gmail.com

History of the Hampton Farm

Andrew E. Hampton moved his family from Madison County, Missouri, to Arkansas in 1845. His youngest son, Joel Y. Hampton, married Lucy Hagler at Arkansas Post in 1851. Their son, W.G.R. Hampton, home-

steaded and raised a large family in the Hagler community of Arkansas County. One of his sons, John H. Hampton, in the early 1900’s, began sharecrop farming and acquiring his own farm as adjoining land be-

came available.

In the beginning, John raised cattle, corn, and cotton.

When rice began to be farmed on the Grand Prairie, he realized that he would need more water than was available through his various wells. Soon, he began implementing numerous conservation practices. He had grown up here and was familiar with the “lay of the land.” In 1936, he envisioned and began developing a system of reservoirs and canals that would irrigate much of his land. He terraced rolling wornout fields and put them into productive pastures. He never believed in fencerow to fencerow clearing and kept the timber at the edge of the prairie as a buffer to his wetlands. The flooded timber and irrigation reservoirs became wintering grounds for waterfowl and provided winter income from guided duck hunts. The reservoirs were stocked with fish that were commercially sold to the northern fish markets. He built one of the first on-farm rice driers in the county to better market his rice crop.

Hampton Farms encompasses about 4500 acres, most of it contiguous. Near the center is a 66 acre spot that was John’s inheritance from his father, W.G.R. Hampton, who had purchased it from a relative in 1891. This is the oldest part of the farm continuously owned by members of the Hampton family. Today his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-greatgrandchildren enjoy the fruits of his labor and continue to practice the stewardship of the farm he established. Hampton Farm is a joint partnership owned

by Rick and Judy Hampton, Gay Hampton Rusk, Joel Hampton and Sloan Hampton. In 2012 the Arkansas Department of Agriculture recognized the ancestral lands of John H. Hampton as a Century Farm.

Deep in Farming

By Sloan Hampton I grew up on the farm. As most kids, I rarely found a mud hole to play in that I didn’t like. I used to tell my friends that I spent 1/3 of my life pulling noxious weeds from fields, another 1/3 picking up driftwood to clear new ground, and the other I’m still figuring out. All through high school, all I ever wanted was to farm.

After graduating from Arizona State University in 1992, I returned to the farm and became a partner with my parents in Hampton Planting Company. In 2008 my brother, Joel, and I became landowners with our parents, Rick and Judy Hampton, and my aunt, Gay Rusk, in Hampton General Partnership. In 2009 my wife, Rhonda, and I became sole owners of Hampton Planting Company. In 2012 Hampton Farms was designated a Century Farm having continuously farmed the same land since 1890. I am proud to have this opportunity to continue this way of life.

By Terrye Seamon Time is divided into seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years, decades, and centuries. No matter how you look at the passage of time though, a century, or a hundred years, is a long time to devote to something – anything. It is definitely a long time to devote to something as hard as tilling the soil year after year in order for it to yield substance enough to live on and provide for your family. Some families have the stamina to do it, and the Hampton Family is one of those families.

The purpose of the Arkansas Century Farm program, according to the Arkansas Agriculture website, is to promote, recognize and honor the rich agricultural heritage of the state of Arkansas and the families who have owned and farmed that land for 100 years.

Since the Arkansas Century Farms program was started in 2012, it has recognized 185 farms throughout the state as Arkansas Century Farms. The Hampton Farm was one of the first 83 families recognized in the program’s inaugural year.

As outlined on the Arkansas Agriculture Department’s website, in order for a farm to be recognized as a “Century Farm,” the farm land has to have been owned and farmed by the same family (children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces or nephews through birth, marriage or adoption) for 100 years. The farm itself must be at least 10 acres of the original land acquired and make a financial contribution to the overall farm income as well.

According to a press release from the Arkansas Agriculture Department, family farms make up over 96 percent of all agricultural operations nationally.

Winners receive a personalized metal sign and certificate. The program is voluntary, places no restrictions

Finding the Right Balance

The saying goes “A woman’s work is never done,” but Rhonda Hampton seems to do a pretty good job balancing her roles as a working mom and a farmer’s wife.

Rhonda grew up in Monroe, a town east of Brinkley, and then moved to DeValls Bluff at the age of 13.

Since she is the daughter of a farmer, husband Sloan’s chosen profession and the farm family way of life is nothing new to her. She and Sloan have been married for five years and are the proud parents of three-year-

old Avery Claire.

When asked how they met, Rhonda said she and Sloan hung around the same group of friends.

“We were just friends, and, finally, he asked me out.”

Rhonda also balances her time as wife and mommy with working at Wilkerson’s Jewelers in Stuttgart, where she has been employed for nineteen years.

Since she works fulltime, Rhonda doesn’t have much of an opportunity to help Sloan with the day-to-day aspects of farming, but she does help out wherever and whenever she can. “On the weekends and during harvest time I may do lunches or someone may need a ride somewhere,” she replied.

Family time consists of attending Bayou Meto Methodist Church, hunting and vacationing together.

Rhonda said, “Ever since Avery was born, we try to vacation in the state. We love the State Parks, whether it’s DeGray or Magazine, or Petit Jean. We do that usually once a year, and then before harvest starts we try to pick out somewhere else to go, usually out of

state.”

During the winter the family enjoys any kind of hunting there is, and husband Sloan is extremely proud that Rhonda loves to deer hunt. “She’s quite the hunter,” said Sloan. Even little Avery puts on her tiny waders and joins in the family fun. If work schedules allow, the family travels to South Dakota to pheasant hunt. Mom noted that Avery has been going to South Dakota even before she was born.

In addition to her roles as working mom and wife, Rhonda loves to cook, and Sloan can definitely vouch for her culinary skills. “She’s a great cook,” he said.

And if it comes down to rice or potatoes, rice wins hands down every time and is usually part of every meal. “We are a gravy and rice house instead of a gravy and potato house,” the family cook said.

Even before winning local and district farm family titles, Rhonda said she and Sloan always promoted farming.

“Wherever we go, if we go on vacation or if we go out somewhere, we take rice with us. I thought it was the strangest thing when we started dating and got married. I would think ‘Why am I taking 30 pounds of rice?’ If you got a gift, it was rice. If you got a thank you, you got rice. If we went pheasant hunting in South Dakota, we hauled 50 pounds of rice with us to distribute it among the people we were hunting with.

Sloan has always done it, and I started doing it. We do the rice thing. It’s promoting our livelihood. We just want people to eat more rice,” said Rhonda.

4 eggs 1 ½ cups powdered sugar Lemon juice Beat first four ingredients for two minutes on high.

Makes two loaves or one bundt cake. Bake at 325 degrees for one hour. Mix powdered sugar and enough lemon juice to drizzle over the cake while still hot.

2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt ¾ cup milk 1 egg ½ cup chopped onion Mix together. Chill for an hour. Drop by teaspoonful into hot oil. Cook until golden brown.

Cream Cheese Pound Cake 3 sticks butter, softened 3 cups sugar ½ tsp. salt 1 (8oz) cream cheese, softened 6 large eggs 1 ½ tsp. vanilla 3 cups sifted cake flour Cream butter, cream cheese, and sugar until light and fluffy. Add salt and vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each. Add flour, divide into four additions. Grease bottom of bundt pan. Pour batter in and bake at 325 degrees for 1 ½ hours.

Sausage and Hash Brown Breakfast Casserole 2 pounds mild or hot sausage 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 1 can cream of chicken soup 1 cup sour cream 1 8oz. container of French onion dip 1 cup chopped onion ½ cup red bell pepper Cavenders to taste 1 30oz. bag of frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed In a skillet, brown the sausage then drain. In a large bowl combine the cheese, chicken soup, sour cream, French onion dip, chopped onion, bell pepper, and cavenders. Fold in thawed hash brown potatoes. Mix well. Spread half of the hash brown mixture over the bottom of a greased 9 x 13 baking dish. Spread half of the browned sausage over hash browns. Repeat layering with remaining hash brown mixture and sausage. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour or until golden brown and bubbly.

Rhonda’s Family Recipes

Banana Nut Bread 1 cup oil 2 cup sugar 4 cups flour 2 cup chopped pecans 4 eggs 6 bananas 2 tsp. baking soda Cream eggs, sugar, and oil. Mix in flour and baking soda. Mash bananas and blend them into mixture.

Stir in pecans. Divide evenly between three loaf pans.

Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes or until toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean.

Grandma’s Lemon Cake 1 lemon cake mix ¾ cup oil ¾ cup apricot nectar(found in the juice aisle)

Avery’s Meatloaf 2 pounds hamburger meat ½ cup chopped onion 1 29 oz. can tomato sauce (divided) ¼ cup brown sugar 2 Tbsp. yellow mustard 2 Tbsp. worcestershire sauce In a large bowl mix meat, onion, and ½ cup tomato sauce. Form into a loaf and put in a 9 x 13 baking dish. Mix remaining tomato sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and worcestershire sauce together and pour over meat. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Great with rice or mashed potatoes.

Good Ole’ Hushpuppies 1 ½ cups cornmeal ½ cup flour

Quick and Easy Hot Artichoke Dip 1 14oz. can artichoke hearts, drain and chop 1 cup mayonnaise 1 minced clove of garlic 1 cup grated parmesan cheese Mix all ingredients and place in a shallow baking dish (pie plate works great). Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly. Serve with crackers or Frito scoops.

Following in Her Daddy’s Footsteps

By Terrye Seamon Sloan and Rhonda’s daughter, Avery, may be only three-years-old, but she is already following in her father’s footsteps. Avery attends Noah’s Ark Daycare at First Baptist Church in Stuttgart Monday through Friday, but when she comes home, she wants to be outside on a tractor with her daddy or riding the four-wheeler. “She’s definitely a farm girl, and she’ll tell you she is,” said Sloan.

“She wants to go ride on a tractor with me. She doesn’t understand that the crops are planted, and we don’t drive a

tractor every day,” Daddy said.

The hunting gene, like the farming gene, seems to be inbred in Avery as well. She already likes to deer and duck hunt like her mom and dad. This may be due to the fact that Avery’s been going pheasant hunting in South Dakota even when Rhonda was still expecting her.

This past duck season, Sloan would pick up Avery from daycare a couple of days a week, and they would go duck hunting in the afternoon.

“She doesn’t understand the seasons

though. She doesn’t understand we can’t go duck hunting right now because it’s not duck season,” Rhonda said.

For a three-year-old, Avery’s days seem to be full of fun and learning. In addition to school, farming with her daddy and hunting with her family, Avery has also started gymnastics and swimming lessons this summer.

“She’s definitely an outdoors kinda girl,” Daddy said.

When asked what advice they would give to Avery later in life concerning

her farm family legacy, Sloan replied, “Respect your elders, keep your debt down, and listen.”

Rhonda said, “We’ve got something that’s been around for a long time. It’s just always been handled with care. We hope that it’s here in the future for her, and we just want her to grow up knowing that - knowing that people have spent many years working the land getting the ground ready for her.”

Hamptons Win SE District Farm Family of the Year

Sloan, Rhonda, and Avery Hampton were named the Southeast District Farm Family of the Year. The district winners will be judged to determine a state winner to be announced December 11. Other district winners are: Nathan and Kristin Reed of Marianna (Lee County) in the East Central District. The Reeds grow cotton, corn, soybeans and milo on 6,000 acres. They have three young children: Jane-Anne, Stanley “Eldon” and Katherine.

Roy and Suzanne Runsick of Melbourne (Izard County) in the North Central District. The Runsicks farm cattle and have forage on 150 acres.

They have four grown sons: Stewart Runsick, Scott Runsick, Bradley Bangs and Keith Bangs.

Keith and Jill Forrester of Tyronza (Mississippi County) in the Northeast District. The Forresters grow a variety of crops, including tomatoes, melons, asparagus and strawberries on 200 acres. They have one child, Fox. Billy Joe and Courtney Wilkins of Lamar (Johnson County) in the North-

west District. The Wilkins farm Bermuda grass and cattle on 255 acres.

They have three young children: Josie, Abby and Mayci.

By Terrye Seamon For 68 years now, the Farm Family of the Year program has recognized farm families for their hard work and dedication as stewards of the land. Arkansas Farm Bureau, one of the sponsors of the Farm Family program, outlines the program’s objectives on their website: • “To give recognition and encouragement to farm families who are doing an outstanding job on their farm and in their community.”

• “To gain recognition of the importance of agriculture in the community and state.”

• “To disseminate information on improved farm practices and management.”

Program guidelines for Farm Family of the Year allow any Arkansas family to compete for the distinguished honor.

Families in partnerships or corporate operations are also eligible for consideration. The family may own or rent their farm land and can receive income from sources other than agriculture.

Chairman of South Arkansas County Farm Family of the Year Committee Eddie Lumsden said, “The county committee of the Arkansas Farm Family of the Year program has 35 members. The committee consists of past Farm Family winners, representatives from the local press, Arkansas County Extension Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Farm Service Agency (FSA), Farm Bureau, Lending Agencies, Phillips Community College (PCC) and Ag Business.”

When selecting the Farm Family of the Year, the county committee places emphasis on the following qualities, traits and characteristics: production efficiency, energy and resource conservation, agricultural and community

affairs leadership, and home and farm management and improvement.

Farm Family of the Year Awards are presented at the local, district, and state levels. Lumsden explained there are 76 county winners instead of 75 because Arkansas County is the only county where there are two county winners: North Arkansas County and South Arkansas County.

On the district level, all of the counties are grouped into eight geographical districts, and a family from each district will then be selected to compete on the state level. The eight district Farm Families will then be judged, and one will be selected as State Farm Family of the Year. The criteria for judging are the same at all three levels.

This year, the Hamptons have been selected as Southeast District Farm Family of the Year. They have already had their state judging, but they will not know the results until later this year.

“They have a banquet usually the second Thursday in December. The state winner will be announced then,” said Rhonda Hampton.

“The number of high quality farmers in South Arkansas County is impressive. The winner of Farm Family sits at the top of an elite group. The selection committee and citizens can state with pride and respect the name of the one chosen. This year’s winner, The Sloan Hampton Family, is certainly highly respected and most worthy of the award.

More Than Just a Farmer

Hugh Hammond Bennett, first chief of the Soil Conservation Service (now the Natural Resources Conservation Service), could not have said it better when he said, “Out of the long list of nature’s gifts to man, none is perhaps so utterly essential to human life as soil.” Someone who has taken Bennett’s sentiments to heart and lives by these words is the 2014 South Arkansas County’s Farm Family of the Year, the Sloan Hampton Family.

Hampton Planting Company manages 5,080 acres in the community of Hagler. Sloan and his wife, Rhonda, use 1,600 of those acres to raise rice, soybeans and sesame. The remaining acres are used for reservoirs, timber and the Conservation Reserve Program. A total of 4,520 acres are owned in partnership with his parents, brother and aunt.

Tilling the soil has always been a way of life for Hampton. As a fifth-generation farmer, he comes from a long line of agriculturists – a century of them, as a matter of fact. In 2012, his family farm, the ancestral land of John H. Hampton was recognized as a Century Farm dating back to 1890.

Farming is not an easy way of life, and the process to becoming Farm Family of the Year has not always been easy.

“In the late ‘70s, our family began converting 600 acres of a 1,200 acre reservoir into a farm. This was a major undertaking because it has taken us nearly 40 years to take it from a muddy pond stage to the profitable and efficient buckshot farm it is today,” Hampton said.

Hampton went on to say that while growing up, he and his brother, Joel, spent their summers gathering and burning driftwood piles that had surfaced from timber that had been cut as far back as the 1800s. “We used as much gravitational irrigation from the remaining reservoir as we could to recover the irrigation water used on the land and return it to the surrounding reservoir,” Hampton said.

After he was grown and started farming, Hampton began to precision level fields one at a time. Now he floods the land during the winter, and it serves as a major rest area for waterfowl.

“Wildlife management is an integral part of the Hampton Farm, particularly waterfowl,” Hampton said. He considers it one of his top three farm management goals, in addition to improving crop production efficiency and irrigation. He has even noticed an increase in the duck and quail population, as well as an improvement in deer management on his land.

“The fields and reservoirs are leased for hunting. The use of reservoirs serves a dual purpose, so water usage for crops must be balanced for wildlife needs, and income from wildlife leases is reinvested into the farming operation,” said the conservationist.

Hampton definitely practices what he preaches. His involvement in county and state conservation groups proves his environmental roots run deep.

“Everybody’s got their way they want to make a difference,” Hampton said.

of the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission in Little Rock since 2006 and was reappointed as chairman until 2020.

In addition to his service to the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, Hampton also is affiliated with the Arkansas County Conservation District, which deals with a variety of issues concerning water, farming and conservation. He has been a member since 2010 and is currently serving as chairman. Even though this organization keeps him busy, he enjoys all the hard work.

“At the local level, some of my issues and my concerns are my neighbor’s issues and concerns,” Hampton said. “I can see that what we do directly benefits them, and it benefits me.”

When asked how he plans to use his position as county, district and possibly state Farm Family of the Year to further his cause for conservation, Hampton replied, “It’s what we do. It’s what we live for. I’m constantly focused on how we can do things better in the county to help our farmers and landowners to become better farmers through conservation.

“We’ve got to figure out how to get businesses and landowners and farmers and the government agencies working together to become better farmers.

That’s going to be the secret for the future for us in order to sustain our agricultural way of life. I think that’s the future for farming. We can’t just tell our story; we have to sell our story, too.”

As far as future plans for the family

farm, “We will continue what we are doing,” Hampton said. “We are always working every year to get more efficient use of our water. That’s the key to it nowadays - trying to improve what we do.”

Even though the whole process of being the 2014 Farm Family of the Year has just started, and the family has a lot of experiences to look forward to in the upcoming year, Hampton said he has learned a lot so far.

“You meet a lot of good people, and you learn a lot of different ways of doing things,” Hampton said. He clarified that meeting new people along the way and learning how they do things will enable him and Rhonda to possibly apply what they have learned to their own needs and situations.

“It’s a great experience,” Hampton said. “We never knew much about it and never even thought it was on the radar. We are very appreciative of our neighbors and our peers. It’s just been a rewarding experience for us. Being chosen to represent our county and southeast Arkansas makes us feel good we were chosen.”

A common thread that unites humanity is mankind’s desire to leave the world a little better than he found it, and that is exactly what Sloan, Rhonda and Avery Hampton are doing as the 2014 South Arkansas County and Southeast Arkansas District Farm Family of the Year.

Through these programs the agency approves contracts to provide financial assistance to help plan and implement conservation practices that address natural resource concerns or opportunities to help save energy, improve soil, water, plant, air, animal and related resources on agricultural lands and non-industrial private forest land.

Current Programs: MRBI (Mississippi River Basin Initiative) To improve the health of the Mississippi River Basin, including water quality and wildlife habitat, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Ser-

vice has announced the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative (MRBI). Through this new Initiative, NRCS and its partners will help producers in selected watersheds in the Mississippi River Basin voluntarily implement conservation practices and systems that avoid, control, and trap nutrient runoff; improve wildlife habitat; and maintain agricultural productivity EQIP- The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers in order to address natural resource concerns and deliver environmental benefits such as improved water and air quality, conserved ground and surface water, reduced soil erosion and sedimentation or improved or created wildlife habitat.

CSP-The Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) helps agricultural producers maintain and improve their ex-

isting conservation systems and adopt additional conservation activities to address priority resources concerns.

Participants earn CSP payments for conservation performance—the higher the performance, the higher the payment. Remember with this program, changes can only be made to the contract one time during the 5 year length of the contract. Also, you have 60 days to report changes to NRCS. Deadline for 2010 CSP renewal : September 12, 2014.

Boozman to Kick-off Annual Ag Tour on August 11, 2014 As he has each previous August since taking office, U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) will be hitting the road Monday to highlight the importance agriculture in Arkansas.

During the tour, Boozman will be meeting with producers, ranchers and more as he visits farms, production facilities and rural co-operatives. Boozman also be speaking at a farm bureau meeting and discussing agriculture with local officials in these counties. “Agriculture is a vital part of Arkansas’s economy. One out of every six jobs in Arkansas is tied to agriculture. This year’s

tour is especially important as we need to hear from Arkansas’s farmers, producers and ranchers as we move forward with the implementation of the farm bill,” Boozman, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, said.

2014 District Farm Families of the Year Named

District winners for the 68th Annual Arkansas Farm Family of the Year Program have been selected. The district winners will now be judged to determine a state winner, to be announced at the Dec. 11 Farm Family of the Year luncheon at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock.

The district winners are: • Nathan and Kristin Reed of Marianna (Lee County) in the East Central District. The Reeds grow cotton, corn, soybeans and milo on 6,000 acres.

They have three young children: JaneAnne, Stanley “Eldon” and Katherine.

• Roy and Suzanne Runsick of Melbourne (Izard County) in the North Central District. The Runsicks farm cattle and have forage on 150 acres.

They have four grown sons: Stewart Runsick, Scott Runsick, Bradley Bangs and Keith Bangs.

• Keith and Jill Forrester of Tyronza (Mississippi County) in the Northeast District. The Forresters grow a variety of crops, including tomatoes, melons, asparagus and strawberries on 200 acres. They have one child, Fox. • Billy Joe and Courtney Wilkins of Lamar (Johnson County) in the

Northwest District. The Wilkins farm Bermuda grass and cattle on 255 acres.

They have three young children: Josie, Abby and Mayci.

• Sloan and Rhonda Hampton of Stuttgart (South Arkansas County) in the Southeast District. The Hamptons farm rice, soybeans and timber on 4,500 acres. They also have 500 acres in CRP. They have one child, Avery Claire.

• Warren and Becky Webster of Washington (Hempstead County) in the Southwest District. The Websters produce approximately 1.4 million chickens per year. They have three children: Logan, Nolan and Katie Ella.

• Richard and Jennifer Broach of Vandervoot (Polk County) in the Western District. The Broachs farm poultry, cattle and hay on 465 acres.

They have three children: Tyler, Trevon and Tayden.

• The Gross Family of Hot Springs (Garland County) in the West Central District. Steve and Stacy, Scott and Kay, and Billy and Mary farm timber, hay, beef cattle, swine, poultry and equine on 1,280 acres. Steve and Stacy have two sons: Colton and Seth. Scott

“I am more amazed every year at the amount of passion Arkansas’ families have for agriculture,” said Randy Veach, a cotton, soybean and wheat farmer from Manila (Mississippi County), who serves as president of Arkansas Farm Bureau. “What a great honor to recognize the men and women of agriculture, and their families, for their hard work and success.

“I want to congratulate those who have been named County and District Farm Families of the Year. These families have made significant efforts within our industry and exemplify the very best of what our state offers.

Voters in Missouri Tuesday approved a constitutional amendment allowing for a “right to farm.”

Results from the Missouri secretary of state showed the amendment prevailed with 50.1 percent of the vote — a difference of 2,528 votes. Nearly 995,000 votes were cast.

The proposal, known as Amendment 1, guaranteed the rights of Missouri residents to “engage in farming and ranching practices,” making farming an official constitutional right, similar to existing protections for the freedoms of speech and religion.

Currently, only North Dakota has a similar constitutional amendment.

The measure could limit future legislation or ballot initiatives seeking to regulate agriculture.

The amendment passage will undergo an automatic recount, triggered by the margin of victory being less than 1 percent.

Missouri Farm Bureau President Blake Hurst issued the following statement after passage: “Thanks to the thousands of Missouri family farmers who made this victory possible. In my 35 years

“This was truly a team effort, and we were proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with our friends from other agriculture organizations, members of the Missouri Congressional delegation, statewide elected officials and members of the Missouri General Assembly.

“Congratulations to every Missouri farmer who has made a phone call, put up a yard sign, posted on Facebook, or talked to their neighbors at church or at the county fair. This victory belongs to you, and you can be proud of what you have done for Missouri farming.

“Our opponents failed to convince people that the thousands of Missouri family farms supporting this amendment were tools of foreign or corporate interests. Missourians have too much common sense for that. Missourians also understand that the only huge, outside contributor to this election was the Humane Society of the United States. In the final analysis, the biggest foreign corporation involved was against the amendment.

“We will, of course, have to see how a recount holds up, but whatever the outcome, we as farmers will continue to work to be worthy of the trust placed in us by Missourians by caring for our land, our animals, and our neighbors. We have to continue to improve, because Missourians expect and deserve the very best. Thank you for your votes, thank all of you for your hard work, and thanks to everyone for supporting Missouri farming.”

Supporters of the amendment said the measure was needed to preserve Missouri’s agricultural heritage, under attack from national groups like the Humane Society of the United States. The agricultural industry in Missouri, with nearly 100,000 farms, has been rattled by the push in other states to pass measures regulating livestock conditions and genetically modified crops.

The secretary of state has until Aug. 26 to certify the results, at which point a recount may be requested by anyone who voted “no” on the measure.

2014 South Arkansas County Farm Family of the Year ASTA Receives $3M Federal Grant to Reduce Crop Stress

From Arkansas Business: The Arkansas Science & Technology Authority has been awarded a $3 million federal grant through its ASSET Initiative to research stress factors on plants.The grant from the National Science Foundation is part of a $6 million, multi-state award with Missouri.

According to a ASTA news release, the funds will be spread out over three years and used to create an interdisciplinary, state-of-the-art Bioimaging Consortium that will enable researchers to adapt food, fiber and fuel crops “to meet the challenges of a changing climate and a growing world population.”

ASTA says the project could directly benefit the agriculture-based economies of Arkansas and Missouri by gen-

erating new tools to reduce crop losses due to stresses such as drought, salinity, insects and disease.

Gail McClure of ASTA will serve as principal investigator on the project with researchers Fiona Goggin of the University of Arkansas and Argelia Lorence of Arkansas State University assisting.

The Arkansas ASSET Initiative is part of the National Science Foundation’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Program and includes entrepreneurial training, support for commercialization of new technologies, and an educational outreach program focused on science, technology, engineering and math.

South Arkansas County Farm Family of the Year The photo shows portions of conservation practices installed on Mr. Hamptons farm made possible with financial assistance through the Mississippi River Basin Initiative program (MRBI). The MRBI program offers cost-share assistance for certain conservation practices which address water quality and quantity concerns. The projects on Mr. Hamptons farm include a pit reservoir to promote increased surface water use with less aquifer dependency, pipe drops to decrease soil erosion, land leveling to enhance irrigation water management and pipelines for more efficient crop irrigation. The MRBI program is offered to certain watershed areas within the state which have been approved through past proposals. Contact your local Conservation District or NRCS office for more information.
