AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY MEETING

The Grand Prairie Center in Stuttgart hosted the 2014 Arkansas Rice Expo Friday, August 1st. This year’s event drew over a 1000 people with lots of free goodies and fun activities for the kids and lots of information on rice production in our area. The day started at 8:00 a.m. with registration, then at 8:30 field and virtual tours began which featured Rice Breeding Updates, Weed Control Technologies, Irrigation and Insect Management, N-Star Program

Open House for all schools in the district will be held on Thursday, August 14 from 5-7 pm at each school. Parents are encouraged to attend, meet the teachers and staff and pick up useful information for the coming year.

The American Legion Auxiliary will meet at the Willow’s, August 7th at 5:30 pm. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

ALUMNI GIRLS SOFTBALL GAME

Get ready for Coach Peek’s 2nd Alumni Girls Softball Game.

It will be held onFriday, August 8, at 6:30 pm. The “oldies” have waited a year for this rematch! All proceeds benefit Romania Missions. Hope to see you at the ballfield.

By Robert Chambers I am writing this letter to acknowledge former Stuttgart Public Works Director Andrew Robinson for his service to our community. I have known Mr.Robinson and his family practically all my adult life, Andrew hails from one of Stuttgart’s most prominent families, his dad the late Eddie Robinson, was one of the first Blacks of African descent, to be employed with the Stuttgart Sanitation Department.Mr.Eddie, as he was affectionately called worked there until he retired, leaving behind a legacy of family first and hard work.

Andrew›s mother the late Missionary Mary Etta Robinson, was a mother who not only trained her children up in the way they should go and that way was holiness, but all children that grew up at Benton Temple C.O.G.I.C.under the Leadership of the late Elder C.L.Benton.

I know we all have sinned in some type of way, and it perturbs me to see Andrew Robinson’s good name and that of his family being dragged through the mud. I have known crimes that have occurred in Stuttgart that have never come to light.Andrew was appointed Stuttgart Public Works Director by former mayor Harry ‘Butch’ Reichenbach becoming the first African -American to serve in that capacity.This position gave Andrew authority over the street department and the sanitation department, many employees within the street department never had a Black man in authority and Andrew had to set the record straight almost on a daily basis.

During Andrew›s tenure as Stuttgart Public Works Director I conversed with him least one or twice a week, and I know how dearly he loved keeping Stuttgart beautiful and clean,and for that I will be forever grateful.

Andrew served the city of Stuttgart with distinction, for over four decades until his untimely resignation in May 2013.

Andrew as Public Works Director served the city equally, making sure all areas of the city were served appropriately.I commend Andrew for his fine work he has done for our city,and I look forward to awarding Andrew Robinson with the Stuttgart Civil/Human Right Party Life Time Achievement Award .

The Arkansas State Board of Health has revised and clarified the immunization requirements under Ark. Code Ann. §§ 20-7-109, 6-18-702, 6-60-501-504, and 20-78-206. The updated requirements for entrance into Kindergarten and grades 1st thru 12th are as follows: • 4 doses of DTP/DT/Td/DTaP/Tdap, with 1 dose on or after the 4th birthday. ALL STUDENTS K-12th • 3 doses of Polio vaccine, with 1 dose on or after the 4th birthday. ALL STUDENTS K-12 • 2 doses of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), with 1st dose on or after 1st birthday. ALL STUDENTS K-12 • 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine. ALL STUDENTS K-12 • 2 doses of Varicella with 1st dose on or after 1st birthday. (Physician documentation only for history of diseases will be accepted). ALL STUDENTS K-12 • Kindergarten and 1st grade students will be required to have 1 dose of Hepatits A. KINDERGARTEN and 1st GRADE • ALL students 11 years and older by September 1st of each year will be required to have a Tdap vaccination.

Soap Making Workshop

A soap making workshop was held Saturday, August 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Lower White River Museum State Park in Des Arc, Arkansas.

Ten participants learned the cold process of making soap, and made six different recipes. Mary Buchman, Interpreter at Powhatan Historic State Park, instructed. Workshop participants included: Shirley Overturf of Des Arc; Lisa and Misty Boatman and Alice Smith of Searcy; Michelle Hurst of Griffithville; Donna Stevens of Bradford; Stephen McAteer, Tom Gray, and Teresa Hudson of Little Rock; and Elizabeth Bittner of Crowley’s Ridge State Park.

Lower White River Museum will host a fall crafts workshop on Saturday, September 13 from 10 a.m.1p.m.

Student Meals to Obituary Cost More William Goodell

Meal prices will be increasing in the DeWitt School District for the 2014-2015 school year. The DeWitt School Board approved an increase in meals recently.

Breakfast prices for all students in grades K-12 will be $1.00 with adult breakfasts to cost $1.25.

Boozman Announces Fall Intern Program

U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) announced that his office is seeking full or part-time interns to help staff in his Washington, D.C. and seven state offices during the 2014 fall semester. “Working in a Senate office allows interns to experience what they’ve learned in school, acquiring firsthand knowledge of the legislative process and constituent services responsibilities.

This is a great opportunity to do rewarding work on behalf of the people of Arkansas,” Boozman said. The Washington intern program emphasizes both practical and educational aspects of working on Capitol Hill from the first-hand perspective. Interns participate in the daily operation of the Senate office, as well as attending both Committee hearings and watching floor proceedings from the Senate gallery.

Internships in Washington give students an opportunity to learn about the legislative process and the federal government by working closely with the legislative, communications and constituent services staff members. In addition, interns will provide constituents with private tours of the U.S. Capitol.

Students may also apply to serve in one of the state offices where each will have the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge about how a senator’s office provides constituent services, interacts with the community, and serves as a liaison to the Washington, D.C. office.

Interns in state office will work closely with staff to help individual constituents with casework, such as VA benefits, Social Security issues and Passports. Senator Boozman has seven state offices to serve the various regions of Arkansas—Lowell, Fort Smith, Mountain Home, Jonesboro, Little Rock, Stuttgart and El Dorado.

Interns will be able to receive academic credit for their work if they so choose depending on their college’s requirements for such credit. Students are required to

William Judson Goodell, age 83, of Gillett died July 30, 2014. He was born December 6, 1930 in DeWitt to Joe Henry and Carrie Estell Wells Goodell who preceded him in death.

He was retired from the U.S. Army, worked as a carpenter, was a member of the American Legion, American Rifle Association, the Arkansas County Historical Society and was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Brinton Goodell; children: W. P. Goodell of Forrest City, Beverly Goodell of Gillett, Larry Joe Goodell of Tichnor, three grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

Graveside services were held 10:00 Friday, August 1st at Gillett Cemetery by Essex Funeral Home, DeWitt.

Obituary Mabel Ola Davis Mabel Ola Bullock Davis, 89, of Stuttgart passed away Saturday, July 12,2014, at Baptist Health in Stuttgart.

Mabel was born July 29, 1924, in DeWitt to Elmer and Lavada Neilson Bullock. She was a member of Grand Prairie Church in Stuttgart.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Watson Davis; one daughter, Bonnie McKennon, one son-in-law, Clyde McKennon Sr.; one son, Car Lee Lester; two grandsons, Rickey Younger and Jerry B. Younger; two granddaughters, Tanya Gardner and Tammy Inman; one sister, Rosa Faye Robinson; three brothers, Chester, Vernon and Clarence Bullock; and one daughter-inlaw, Sharon Lester.

Survivors are three daughters, Rovin Lavell Inman (Everett), Beverly Ideker (Ray) and Debra Maier, all of Stuttgart; one stepson, Bill Davis of Clarendon; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Healthcare or the donor’s choice.

Obituary James McCann James Jerome McCann, age 95, of St. Charles died Monday, July 21, 2014. He was born June 13, 1919 in Waterloo, Iowa to Roy Otis and Isabel Rose Denning McCann. He was retired after 30 years service in the U. S. Air Force, was a member of St. Charles Methodist Church, the American Legion, DeWittSt. Charles Hunting Club and was an advisor and worked for many years with the Boy Scouts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, two sisters and a grandson. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Luebke McCann; children: Jamie Rasor (John) if Greenfield, IN, John McCann (Marion) of Rustin, LA, George McCann (Brenda) of Mabelvale, twelve grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved this part of Arkansas County and the White River.

He was a proud military retiree and was proud of his service to his country.

Obituary Fay Coit Fay Bowden George Coit, age 71, of DeWitt died July 29, 2014. She was born June 29, 1943 in Holly Grove to Hubert Nathan and Mattie Dorella Walker Bowden.

She worked 35 years for the DeWitt Shoe Factory as a foreman and was a Baptist. She lived to fish, hunt, play cards and Scrabble and play with her grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, William C. George and daughter Shannon Bullock and her husband, David all of DeWitt, grandchildren: Kaleb, Kenzie and Emma Bullock, sisters, Judy Kyle, Margaret Manning and Sue Kemp all of DeWitt along with a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jackie Bowden.

A visitation to celebrate her life was held 5:00 to 7:00 Thursday, July 31st at Essex Funeral Home, DeWitt.

Obituary James Brown James Wesley Brown, 47, of Lancaster, SC passed away July 25th at Springs Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Jim was the son of the late J.J. Brown and Mary Frances Waller Lester. He was a 1986 graduate of DeWitt High School and joined the Marines after living in Indiana for eighteen months. After discharge he became a corrections officer for the South Carolina Department of Corrections from which he retired in January.

Jim is survived by his wife Sandra N. Brown, a son; Wesley, and a daughter; Makayla all of Lancaster, SC; two sisters, Michelle Sledge (Billy) of Pangburn, AR and Monica Roach (Larry) of DeWitt.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Carroll P. Lester Jr. A service to celebrate his life was held July 30 in Lancaster. His interment in DeWitt will take place at a later date.

DeWitt School District Free and Reduced Meals

The DeWitt School District has announced its policy for providing free and reduced price meals for children served under the National School Lunch Program, and School Breakfast Program. DeWitt Elementary, DeWitt Middle, DeWitt High, and Gillett Elementary School has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party. The price charged for a paid student breakfast is $1.00; the price charged for a paid student lunch is $1.50 for DeWitt and Gillett Elementary, $1.75 for DeWitt Middle School, and $2.00 for DeWitt High School.

HOUSEHOLD APPLICATIONS The household size and income criteria identified below will be used to determine eligibility for free and reduced price benefits for SY 2014-15. Children from households whose income is at or below the levels shown are eligible for free or reduced price meals.

Household application forms are being distributed by the school with a letter informing households of the availability of free and reduced price meals for their children. Only one application should be submitted for each household. Applications are also available at the principal’s office in each school. To apply for free or reduced price meals, households must complete the application and return it to the school.

Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year as circumstances change. The in-

formation households provide on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility and verification of data.

Applications may be subject to verification at any time during the school year by school officials.

CATEGORICAL ELIGIBILITY Children who are members of a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamps, household are categorically eligible for free meals.

School officials will determine eligibility for free meals based on documentation obtained directly from the SNAP office. School officials will notify households of their eligibility by September 29, 2014.

Households with children who are members of currently approved Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (formerly food stamps) may submit application with abbreviated information as described in the application instructions.

WOMACK FAMILY ENJOYS VACATION Randy and Gayle Womack, Ryan, Kenna, and Eli Womack of Jonesboro,

and Ryan, Jordan, Lainie, and Reese Gardner of Weiner, all enjoyed a nice family vacation in Orange Beach, AL. While there they enjoyed eating out at many seafood restaurants, shopping, and the beach. They visited The Little Zoo That Could, a home and petting zoo to rescued animals. The kids were

able to feed them, and they LOVED it! The last night, a photographer met them on the beach to take family pictures.

FUHRMAN TO HAVE SURGERY Aaron Fuhrman of Hot Springs will be having a very rare surgery called Kyphosis Posterior Spinal Fusion on Friday, August 8, 2014. The surgery

Ms. Eleanor Bullock of Crockett’s Bluff, was pleasantly surprised on her 88th Birthday last week, when her sisters, Carlotta Barnhill of Cabot, and Jan Smith of Tyler, Texas; and Ms. Eleanor’s daughter, Eileen Ziegler of Russellville, and Ms Eleanor’s granddaughter, Kalyn Stark of Pottsville, knocked at her door; carrying two decorated Birthday cakes, chips & dips,punch, ice cream and homemade fudge.

Also attending Ms Eleanor’s surprise Birthday party, were Stevan & Peggy Bullock, Terry Dan &

Joan Bullock and Ruthe Richards of Coy, (who, I understand was already here visiting with her Mother.) Later, Darryll & Vicki Gardner came by to enjoy the fun and & fellowship. Ms. Eleanor said, “My party was a lot of fun. There was a lot of remembering going on.”

MY COMMENTS: First of all, Ms. Eleonor, I wish you a belated, HAPPY 88TH BIRTHDAY! I feel that you really deserved this wonderful surprise your children gave you. These are memories that no one can take from you.

Christians are People That Know

By William Wood We are living in a day when people seem to find it hard to know right from wrong.

Skepticism is becoming more and more prevalent, as doubts concerning spiritual things attack the minds of the people!

But God has so prepared the human mind that it desires definite knowledge and positive proof. Since He made us that way He has promised to meet that need!

One thing that distinguishes Christianity from all human systems is that it deals with absolute truth.

Christians are people who know! God has given His born again people the ability to know truth, and with it the Spiritual strength to stand and say “I know!” We thank God for this!

Born again people, who have had time to be taught by The Holy Ghost, are not walking in the dark, but in the light of God’s Revealed Word! They can say “such and such is wrong.”

The issues concerning life’s death are so greatly important, and the stake involved in the salvation of our soul is so far ahead of all other things in importance, that we can’t afford to be uncertain about it!

My sermon today was prompted by a friend who had loved ones gone on, the same as most of us have. I remarked that we would someday see them again. The reply was “I hope so.” This person had been a church member for many years, and it was far past the time when they should have known where they are going when they die!

No one would be foolish enough to cross a frozen river until they knew the ice was strong enough to hold them.

Do we dare then to face the river of death with nothing more than a vague rope that we will be safe on the other side?

Personal assurance in our hearts is the crying need of this evil hour. There can be no real peace of heart and soul until we have it!

A parent who is in suspense concerning the safety of a child is in an agony of soul.

A criminal who lies in the death cell, hoping for a pardon is in mental torment until his pardon arrives.

May I say this without any condemnation toward any person, a confessed Christian who knows not whether they shall end in Heaven or hell is greatly in need of the Gospel of Salvation.

We say again, Christians are people who know! They know they have “Passed from death unto life.” (1st John 3:14) They know that “If this earthly house were dissolved they have a building of God waiting.”(2nd Cor. 5:1) They know that “one day” they shall see Christ Face to Face and be made like Him.” (John 3:2) If you ask how do they know, the answer is, they have His Holy Ghost in them, Who makes them to know.

Every person who has read in the Scriptures God’s invitation to sinners, and has confessed his sins and asked for forgiveness, and who is willing to live for God, forsaking his sins, can say in the words of an old hymn, “I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad; I found in Him a resting place and He has made me glad.”

By Michael P. Daniel “Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean. Remove the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, learn to do good. Seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow” (Isaiah 1:16-17).

“Isaiah was a realist. Though he was convinced of the truth of his message, he expected the people to be able to hear the message the first time, but not necessarily able to understand its importance and follow it readily.

Old habits are not easily changed.”

“Much like the Israelites, we also find our ears are dulled to the message. That is why Isaiah comes to us.

Isaiah intends to be our hearing aid. Isaiah wishes to help us perceive the silent sigh, to amplify the message that is an octave too high, and bring it down to a level to which we can not only hear it, but also pay attention to it in a way that will call us to action.”

“Isaiah’s warning is not meant to be depressing, but inspirational. He notes that IF we can hear the message to act in a good and just manner, we can turn the course of our world around. By learning to do good, devoting ourselves to justice, and looking out for those who cannot look out for themselves, we can find our world transformed. Only when we transform our hearing into understanding and action, can the heavens and the earth be glad and rejoice.” Rabbi Matt Dreffin So our United Methodist mantra to “make disciples for the transformation of the world” must first involve our own transformations. We who claim to believe in the message of Christ have a bounden duty to reflect all which is taught to us by Messiah. Claiming to believe goes far beyond a benign belief that Jesus of Nazareth once walked the earth; faith involves actions which reflect what it is we believe about The Lord, a reflection of the mercy once extended to us.

Make no mistake; our actions do not buy us favor with our Holy Father, for He cannot be bought nor can He be impressed by human action. Rather we understand that the “transformation of the world” begins with the transformation of our own hearts, doing and being to our neighbors and to the world all The Lord has done and has been to His Church, His people. Then will we begin to see changes. Then will those outside of the Covenant begin to understand what the Holy Covenant is about. We will never see it nor understand its importance, however, until we first begin to do it ourselves.

The Silent Stealer and Killer (First In A Four-Part Series on “Worry—Its Causes and Cure”)

By Tom Smith It lives in your home and in mine. It accompanies you to work. It goes to bed with you at night (if you let it). And, it does its job well, robbing us of our joy and peace-ofmind while contributing to many of our health problems.

What is this deceptive, disruptive, deadly destroyer?

It’s worry.

You know, getting stressed or freaked out over something before or after it happens. Its causes are many, but thankfully there are some ways to successfully deal with it— which is the purpose of this four-week series on “Worry—Its Causes and Cure.”

An Anglo-Saxon word, the basic meaning of “worry” is “to choke or strangle.” Thus, when you’re getting anxious over something you quite often will notice a tightening in your chest, neck and jaw.

That inward uptightness often leads to an unconscious, physical tightness of the muscles in those areas, as well as an elevation in one’s blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

And, continual stress can lead to other physical problems like ulcers, acid indigestion, diminished immune system, etc.

That’s why it’s important for us to know its causes and cure (antidote).

There are a lot of reasons we worry: Family problems. Financial problems. Physical problems. The future (unknowns). We worry about what we’re going to wear, eat, how we look and what other people think. And, as someone once said, we know worry doesn’t change anything (except us)—for it’s like rocking in a rocking chair; we’re expending lots of energy but going nowhere.

Truly, we worry about the past, knowing we can’t change it. We worry about the future, knowing we can’t control it. And, all of these combine to rob us of our peace-of-mind and inward joy today.

So, how can we quit worrying and enjoy God’s incomparable, indescribable Peace (John 14:27; Philippians 4:7)?

The next three weeks we’re going to take a look at Matthew 6:19-34, which is a part of what’s known as Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount.” In those verses you’ll find what He has to say about “heart-treasures” and the importance of laying up Heavenly ones, not earthly ones (vv.19-21). He also had quite a bit to say about singularity of focus (vv.22-24, 33) and simplicity of Faith/ trust (vv.25-32). And, He ends that section by reminding us to not “borrow trouble from tomorrow—for you’ve got enough to deal with today” (v.34).

Yes, Jesus knew well our propensity for worry. He knew how easily doubts and fears can enter our mind, causing us to worry over things that will never happen—or those things over which we have no control (e.g., the unrest in the Middle East, the economy, global warming, etc.)

So often we’re like the guy who fell overboard from his boat traveling down the Mississippi River. When he hit the water he disappeared from sight.

A few seconds later he resurfaced, crying “Help me! Help me!” as he once again sank beneath the water.

After three or four times of this, he finally screamed “Someone’s got to help me and help me right now! I can’t hold this anvil much longer!!”

Quite a humorous anecdote, isn’t it?

But, in reality, it describes what’s happening when we’re hanging onto worry. It distorts our thinking and robs us of hope, which leads to despair.

Here’s hoping you’ll spend a few minutes this week reading Jesus’ words in Mt. 6:19-34 and then tune in again next week as we look more closely at “Worry—Its Causes and Cure.” God bless you.

The annual John Berry Horton family reunion was held on Sunday, July 27th at the DeWitt Community Center. The event was hosted by the Mack and Susie Horton family. Following the invocation by Keith Noble, those attending enjoyed a delicious potluck meal--the highlight of the day. There were approximately 70 people in attendance. An auction of home-baked desserts was held with Jimmy and Tommy Horton presiding. A chocolate pie baked by Ruby Horton brought the highest bid of $75.00, with Jerry Horton winning the bid on the prized item. A raffle was held and tickets were drawn for prizes of gift baskets and cash. Julia M. Scheiderer has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as «Operation Warrior Forge,» at Fort Knox, KY. After graduating from this course, Scheiderer was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Arkansas National Guard. She is now a military police officer.

The 29 days of training provide the best possible professional training and evaluation for all cadets in the aspects of military life, administration and logistical support. Although continued military training and leadership development is included in the curriculum, the primary focus of the course is to develop and evaluate each cadet’s officer potential as a leader by exercising the cadet’s intelligence, common sense,

ingenuity and physical stamina. The cadet command assesses each cadet’s performance and progress in officer traits, qualities and professionalism while attending the course.

Cadets in their junior and senior year of college must complete the leadership development course. Upon successful completion of the course, the ROTC program, and graduation from college, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, National Guard, or Reserve.

Scheiderer is the daughter of Emil Scheiderer II and Terri Scheiderer of Ulm, Ark. She is a 2010 graduate of Stuttgart High School, Stuttgart, Ark. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 2014 from Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind.

Curious or Converted?

One day after the writing of this column, I will be heading to Sturgis, South Dakota for a week. I will be helping to staff an evangelism tent at the motorcycle rally. We will be encouraging people to consider the most important question ever posed to a human being. Every other issue pales, really fades to total insignificance, in the light of this question. This is a question that cannot be avoided. This question will not be denied; it will be answered.  The answer to this question will determine the rest of one’s earthly life and eternity. Every person is born a sinner, an enemy of God, and begins sinning as fast as possible. God in His mercy and grace and love provided a way for every person to be reconciled to Him. This reconciliation comes at a terrible cost but not to the recipient. Rather the cost was paid by the One who gave it. Any person who trusts God by receiving this precious gift

By Michael L. Waldroup Romans 9:6, “For they are not all Israel which are of Israel.� From 70 AD to 1948, there was no national state of Israel. In 70 AD, the Roman Empire grew weary of the Jewish/Israel problem of that day. The Roman General Titus was giving orders to destroy Jerusalem and its people. Thousands were murdered, and thousands went into slavery and were scattered throughout all the world. God promised to bring them back into their homeland as seen in the following three verses: Jeremiah 30:3, “For, lo, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, saith the Lord: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.

Isaiah 11:11-12, “And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

has become a Christian. The Bible calls this being born again. We often refer to this change as being converted. If a person traveling abroad wants to spend money he brought from home, he must first convert his money to the currency in use in the country to which he has traveled. The Christian is a little like the converted currency. The person who has trusted God is born again (spiritually) as a new creation. Old things have passed away and new things have emerged. Unless a person is converted to Christ, he will not enter heaven. The Bible teaches that Christians are hidden in Christ so that God the Father sees only the sinless perfection of His Beloved Son in Whom He is Well Pleased, not the sinful human. Hallelujahs are appropriate at this point.  In effect, the value of the old currency (the sinful human) has been converted to the new currency (Christ).

I heard a sermon one time entitled, “Curious or Convertedâ€?? The main message was that many people believe that they are Christians (converted) when in reality they are not. They are only curious about Jesus. The record of Jesus’ ministry in the New Testament is full of illustrations of this very fact.  Almost always as soon as Jesus began to draw crowds of curious onlookers, He moved quickly to weed out those who did not truly trust Him.  Invariably, Jesus would unleash some very simple teaching that required the hearer to lay aside everything and throw themselves completely on His mercy. Even those who believed in Jesus ability to heal were revealed as the merely curious. These people came for healing and brought friends and family for healing but they were not converted. They sought gifts not the Giver.  That is self-centered and does not result in conversion.Â

These people were proJesus but not saved. They liked Jesus and maybe even loved Him in some sense. They were in favor of the supernatural works that Jesus did. They were entertained by and interested in His marvelous teaching. Sadly, they would turn away from Jesus when they found out what true conversion meant. Many Americans do exactly the same thing today. Tragically, many curious people today never find out that curiosity and pro-Jesus sentiments do not equal salvation. In many cases, the church in America has failed to declare the whole counsel of God. We have allowed the curious seeker to believe that his curiosity and warm feelings for  Christ are evidence that he has been converted, born again as a new creation in Christ, when that is not what Jesus taught at all. ..‌‌..‌.. pastorsteve8800@gmail. com

It may not seem like it, but this was the tender, loving hand of God putting Israel back in their homeland. This was the best way because it was God’s way, and it created in their hearts a Godgiven desire to keep and defend their homeland at all cost. Their motto is “Never Again� (speaking of the Holocaust).

Since 1948, world events have transpired to cause the Jews to return to their homeland. In 1977 Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, proclaimed, “Bring me the Ethiopian Jews.� There are some 120,000 Ethiopian Jews in their homeland that would have been killed in Ethiopia, but Israel, by the help of God, was able to get them out of that country.

On November 9th, 1989, the Berlin Wall came down. This allowed thousands of the Jews that were trapped behind the Communist Wall to return. They had been praying to go home, so God brought down the Wall and they went home.

God only deals with Israel as a nation and when they are in their homeland. He deals with the Gentiles as individuals, not as nations, and He

This report is designed to inform you about the quality water and services we deliver to you every day. Our goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water, and we want you to understand, and be involved in, the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our water resources.

Where Does Our Drinking Water Come From?

The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. We purchase treated water from DeWitt Municipal Waterworks whose sources are two wells that pump from the Sparta Sand Aquifer.

How Safe Is The Source Of Our Drinking Water?

The Arkansas Department of Health has completed a Source Water Vulnerability Assessment for DeWitt Municipal Waterworks. The assessment summarizes the potential for contamination of our sources of drinking water and can be used as a basis for developing a source water protection plan.

Based on the various criteria of the assessment, our water sources have been determined to have a medium susceptibility to contamination.

What Contaminants Can Be In Our Drinking Water?

As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife; Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming; Pesticides and herbicides which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses; Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems; Radioactive contaminants which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

In order to assure tap water is safe to drink, EPA has regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Am I at Risk?

All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. However, some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from small amounts of contamination. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-4264791. In addition, EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by microbiological contaminants are also available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline.

Lead and Drinking Water If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. We are responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

TEST RESULTS We and DeWitt Municipal Waterworks routinely monitor for constituents in your drinking water according to Federal and State laws. The test results table shows the results of our monitoring for the period of January 1st to December 31st, 2013. In the table you might find terms and abbreviations you are not familiar with. To help you better understand these terms we've provided the following definitions: Action Level - the concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements which a water system must follow.

Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) - the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water.

MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology.

OBJECTIONS TO RELEASE OF FUNDS The Arkansas Economic Development Commission will accept objections to its release of funds and the responsible entity’s certification for a period of fifteen days following the anticipated submission date or its actual receipt of the request (whichever is later) only on one of the following bases: (a) that the certification was not in fact executed by the certifying officer; (b) that applicant has omitted a step or failed to make a decision or finding required by HUD regulations at 24 CFR 58; (c) the grant recipient has committed funds or incurred costs not authorized by 24 CFR 58 before approval of a release of funds by the State; or (d) another Federal agency acting pursuant to 40 CFR 1504 has submitted a written finding that the project is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of environmental quality.

STEM is an acronym for a cluster of careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In order to make students more aware of the opportunities in these fields, a STEM Academy was held on the Stuttgart Campus of PCCUA for Arkansas County students. Theresa Dupuy is the Arkansas County STEM coordinator and was the organizer and facilitator for this four day event. STEM offers students advising services, ability assessment, career information, planning resources and processes and advice on transfer and career options.

In addition to learning about STEM Career information, students were also given a preparation study for The COMPASS in reading, writing and mathematics.

The participants were then able to take the COMPASS test, the results of which will be used for placement into college English, reading, and math courses.

Presentations were also made on College Survival and Note Taking Skills.

Specialty workshops were presented by PCCUA instructors Randi Tyler, Kim Kirby, Thomas Moss, Terry Turner and Mike Shaw. Their topics, respectively, were Exploring Computer Graphic Design, Designing Making, Soil Nutrients and Fertilizers, Biofuels, RET, Math and Engineering. On the final day, the students toured the Harry K. Dupree Stuttgart National Aquaculture Research Center. Carl Webster facilitated this tour.

Arkansas Department of Health High summer temperatures and humidity increases the risk of heat-related illness, especially for those who are participating in outdoor activities. While the elderly, the very young and people with chronic health conditions are most likely to suffer from a heat-related illness, young, healthy individuals can be severely affected by heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather.

Earlier this year, the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) and the Arkansas Department of Education launched the Exertional Heat Illness Project by distributing three thousand packets containing heat safety training materials to public, private and charter schools across the state. The Project’s goal is to educate and train school administrators, coaches, parents, caregivers, emergency medical personnel and communities on ways to avoid or treat heat-related illness in youth. “Heat-related illness can happen quickly and have devastating effects,� said Greg Brown, Emergency Medical Services Section Chief at ADH. “We want to remind parents, coaches and communities that there are safety practices and resources available that can

help save lives.�

People suffer heat-related illness when their bodies are unable to properly cool themselves.

Heat-related illnesses include: Heat cramps, which are often the very first sign that the body is having trouble with the heat, are sudden cramps in muscles after activity that causes heavy sweating in high temperatures. If heat cramps occur, get to a cooler place, rest in a comfortable position, lightly stretch muscles and drink water every 15 minutes.

Heat Exhaustion symptoms include: weakness, nausea, dizziness and heavy sweating, exhaustion and increasing body temperature. If not treated, the condition will get worse, the body temperature will keep rising, and heatstroke may occur. If heat exhaustion symptoms occur, get to a cooler place, remove or loosen tight clothing and apply cool wet cloths. Drink cool water every 15 minutes and rest in a comfortable position.

Heatstroke, which is a life-threatening condition, is caused when the body can no longer properly cool itself. Heatstroke symptoms include: lack of sweat-

COMMUNITY NEWS Plenty of Water and Getting Used to Heat Protects Athletes from Stroke The relatively mild summer we’ve had this year may have meant more pleasant days and fewer sunburns, but don’t let those cooler temps fool you: Kids are still at risk for heat illness.

As we approach warmer weather, the medical team at Arkansas Children’s Hospital expects to see more young athletes come to our Emergency Department needing treatment for heat exhaustion and even heat stroke.

We know that two-a-day practices are on the horizon – for football players, cheerleaders and marching band members alike. Unfortunately, these nice breezy summer days mean that young athletes haven’t had a chance to acclimate to the heat, which is an important part of preventing heat illness in this population.

Parents, coaches and their own teammates need to be on the lookout for the signs of heat illness. A few years ago, during a particularly brutal summer, several high school football players ended up in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit because of heat illness.

Catching these kids and getting them treatment early can save their lives.

What does heat illness look like? Kids may have some combination of the following symptoms: noticeable, increased thirst; muscle cramps; weak-

ness; decreased performance; nausea; rials. It’s also helpful to change into dry absolutely an emergency and could be headache; fatigue; light-headedness or clothes often. heat stroke. American Red Cross Blood Drive The American Red Cross continues to have an urgent need for blood donors of all blood types to give before the Labor Day holiday, even after many more donors stepped up to give following an urgent call issued in late July. Donors with types O negative, B negative and A negative blood are especially needed.

Blood donations often decline during the summer months, particularly around summer holidays. With school starting back up and summer activities coming to an end, there is still time for eligible donors to make a difference in the lives of patients this summer.

To encourage donations over the Labor Day holiday weekend, all donors who come out to donate blood August 30 through September 1, will receive a Red Cross mason jar tumbler, while supplies last.
