ANNUAL JOHN B HORTON FAMILY REUNION

The annual John B Horton Family Reunion will be Sunday, July 27 at the Community Room at DeWitt City Park. A pot luck meal with many delicious recipes will begin at noon. The event will be hosted by the Mack and Susie Horton family and will include an auction of homemade desserts baked by members of the family. Photos of ancestors and family history will be featured for the children. Door prizes will be given to the lucky ticket holders.

It will be a day of fun, food, and fellowship for those who attend.

LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT July 1, 2014 - Driver 1 stated that she was traveling South on McAdams Road, taking a cell phone charger to a friend, Driver 1 stated that her own cell phone began ringing, so she reached into the passenger seat to grab it and answer it. Upon doing so, driver 1 stated that she lost control of her vehicle, and slid into a ditch on the west side of McAdams Road. Vehicle 1 struck a 30 mph speed limit sign prior to entering the ditch.

Damage to vehicle 1 was located on the front bumper area.

Driver reported no injuries at the time of the accident, and was transported to the Arkansas County Detention Center for a Warrant out of another Dept.

Vehicle 1 was towed from the scene by Capps Towing.

July 3, 2014 - Officer Brad Bazarow was dispatched to the intersection of 2nd and Roy for a report of a hit and run.

Upon arrival, he spoke to Mr. Daniel Cupples. Mr Cupples stated that he was sitting at the stop sign waiting to turn when a white, newer model Tahoe with big black rims went past the intersection and instead of turning on the driver side of Mr. Cupples turned on the passenger’s side of Mr. Cupples vehicle and struck the rear fender with the front passenger’s door of the unidentified Hispanic males vehicle.

Mr. Cupples stated that the Hispanic male had a shaved head and was wearing a striped white polo shirt.

Officer Bazarow then left the scene to look for the white Tahoe; he spotted the vehicle on West 13th Street. He then saw a Hispanic male wearing a white polo shirt with a shaved head beside the vehicle.

When Officer Bazarow approached the Hispanic male, later identified as Benjamin Gomez, he stated that he did not speak English very well and stated that the owner of the vehicle worked at AMECA. He then called AMECA and asked for Mr. Jimenez. When he answered Officer Bazarow informed him of the situation and asked him to come to his location.

When Mr. Jimenez arrived Officer Bazarow asked him if his vehicle had any damage to the left side to which he replied no. Bazarow asked if Mr. Gomez was allowed to drive it and he stated yes. Officer Bazarow then had Mr. Jimenez translate for him and ask Mr.Gomez what happened. Mr. Gomez stated that he did not know that he had hit the truck because his music was up but noticed the damage when he got home but did not know what to do. Officer Bazarow issued Mr. Gomez a citation for No Driver’s License and leaving The Scene of An Accident.

Officer Bazarow took pictures of all damage and got statements from both drivers.

August 3, 2014 - Officer Bazarow went to back up Officer Truax who responded to a disturbance call at 1108 S. Madison. Upon arrival, he was advised the Suspect was intoxicated, and cursing at minor children, and Witness #1. Witness #1 had left the residence and was at a neighbor’s house trying to avoid the Suspect. The Witness stated that she wanted the Suspect to gather his things, and leave for the night.

Truax walked back to the Suspect, and advised him as to what she wanted.

The Suspect stated in a very loud voice. “That’s fine. she always does this (expletive) to me. Gets mad and calls the cops on me.� ``The Suspect was advised that there were other people outside, and the cursing needed to stop. The Suspect then turned and went inside the residence, but immediately walked back out.

The Suspect then yelled, “Y’all need to go get my (expletive) money from her. If I have to leave, I want my money back�. Again, the Suspect was advised to stop yelling and cursing. The Suspect then turned to go back into the residence, then turned towards the officers again. The Suspect again stated “I just want my (expletive) money, can y’all do that, or get her over here so I can talk to her.�

The Suspect was advised that the Witness was not returning to the residence until he had left, and was also advised again to stop yelling and cussing. The Suspect then turned towards the residence to re-enter it again.

Before entering the residence, the Suspect walked to the steps, and yelled at another party stating “You need to get the (expletive) off my property, there’s no need for you to be here you (expletive) punk. At that time the Suspect was advised to turn around, and place his hands behind his back. The Suspect was informed that he was being arrested for Disorderly Conduct. The Suspect refused. The Suspect was ordered two more times to turn around and place his hands behind his back, both times refusing. When Officer Truax grabbed the Suspects arm, he yanked his arm away, stating “I ain’t getting arrested.� The Suspect was advised he was being arrested for Disorderly Conduct. After the fourth attempt at trying to place handcuffs on the Suspect, he again yanked away. He was then hit with a tazor by Officer Bazarow.

After being struck with the tazer, the Suspect rushed Officer Bazarow, shoving him backwards and striking him in the facial area. After wrestling with the Suspect, he was placed in handcuffs, and transported to Arkansas County Detention Center. EMS was notified, and removed the prongs from the Suspect at the Arkansas County Detention Center.

The Suspect, Ronnie Heath McDaniel, was charged with 2nd Degree Battery on an Officer, Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting arrest.

Court date is pending.

July 17, 2014 - Officer Jonathan Powell was dispatched to Grandview Drive, next to Crestpark of DeWitt for an accident.

Upon arrival Officer Powell spoke to Mr. Isaiah Hollis.

Also present were Mr. Benny West and Mrs. Denise Miller. Mr. Hollis stated that while he was driving the vehicle he dropped his phone. He said that when he went to retrieve it, he lost control of the vehicle and drove into the ditch. Mr. West confirmed what Mr. Hollis told Officer Powell.

Powell then talked to Miller who told him that Crestpark of DeWitt will be pursuing reimbursement for the damages to their lawn.

Officer Powell took photos of the accident and Mr. Hollis’ vehicle. He then called Capps Wrecker service, per Mr. Hollis’ request. Once Mr. Roger Capps arrived, he pulled the vehicle out, and it was in drivable condition. The vehicle was released to Mr. Hollis. Officer Powell cited Mr. Hollis for Careless/Prohibited Driving.

LOCAL NEWS Eddie Best Addresses Arkansas County Quorum Court

By Terrye Seamon Any coach of any sport will probably say that that the key to victory is practice, practice, practice, and it’s never too early to get off to a good start. That is exactly what Judge-elect Eddie Best did Tuesday morning when he attended the monthly Arkansas County Quorum Court meeting. ‘’I’m going to try to make this transition as good as possible and as smooth as possible for the people of our [Arkansas] county,� current Arkansas County Judge Glenn “Sonny� Cox said when he introduced Best to Quorum Court members.

Best said, “I would just like to say thank you to each and every person here for the job that you do and during the campaign and the demeanor and the composure you had. And I appreciate all that you have done for the county and done in the past. I’m looking forward to working with each and every one of you, and I hope that not only through this transition, but as I take the office, that we will work and keep the citizens of Arkansas County foremost in our mind and on our heart.�

There were three items on the July agenda that needed the Quorum Court’s attention. The first of which was a current financial update by Arkansas County Treasurer Charles A. Horton. In his report, Horton compared the current year’s financial standing for the first six months with the first six months of the previous four years.

Over the past five years, the beginning balance in the County General Fund was the highest in 2014 at $1,118,691.93. “We’ve started out the year in better shape than we have been,� Horton said.

Horton explained that there is approximately $55,000 that no longer falls under the County General Funds heading. Due to state auditor regulations, the Public Defender Fund and Reappraisal Cost Fund are now considered their own separate funds instead of falling under County General. “When you add them all together, they’re basically in the ballpark. They may be up a little bit or down a little bit. When you look across [the report] over the years, not anything has changed drastically,� Horton said. He went on to say that the County General Fund was down in 2012 but consistent the other four years.

The County Road Fund is up from 128,833.95 last year to $226, 869. 01 currently. “We are in considerably better shape by about $100,000 this year,� Horton said.

After all the number crunching, Horton explained that current funds available are $2,911,417.49, which is the highest it has been in the past 5 years. He went on to say that it is only just a little bit higher than it was at this time in 2010 and 2011 though. “We are right there in line, and if we didn’t have some extra money in a few places, we would be back down to $2,340,279.47 in 2012,� Horton said.

The second order of new business was an update on the adult/juvenile detention facilities presented

by Sheriff Allen Cheek. He reported that currently the county jail is housing 88 inmates and one male in the juvenile facility. He told the Court that out of the 88, 33 are technically state inmates. On the current issue of prison overcrowding, Cheek said, “The medium-size jails in the state are not affected as bad as the small jails and the large jails. We were lucky when we got the ½ cent sales tax to fund the jail. One of the smartest moves that were made was when they decided to build it twice the size we needed,â€? Cheek said. He also said that the Arkansas Department of Corrections isn’t solely responsible for creating a burden on the county jails because the county receives $28 a day for each state inmate. Part of the problem comes from parole violators who have to be jailed until they have a hearing. They are technically considered state inmates during that time, but the county

is not getting paid for them. Cheek said the capacity of the jail is 136, but housing depends on a prisoner’s classification as to where he or she is exactly placed in the facility.

In the third order of new business, the Court unanimously passed an appropriation ordinance which will amend the budget for the reimbursement of Cobra payments in the amount of $3,181.46.

In a last order of business, Judge Cox told the Court that according to Department of Finance and Administration statistics, unemployment for Arkansas County is 4.9 percent. “4.9 percent is the lowest in our ten-county area. We haven’t seen 4.9 in a long, long time,� Judge Cox said.

Sevella Jones Parker, 79, of Crocketts Bluff died July 8, 2014. She was born on October 21, 1934, in Ethel, AR, to William Thomas and Ida Myrtle Criswell Jones. She retired as the secretary at Arkansas County Soil Conservation Service and was a member of Crocketts Bluff Baptist Church.

Sevella was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers, and four sisters. Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Spencer Parker; her daughter Sue Moody of Jonesboro; two step daughters Marti Leslie of Elaine and Courtney Kayalar of New York, NY; one granddaughter, Tiffany Young; one step granddaughter Drew Bell and one step grandson Spencer Wayne Leslie.

Obituary Michael Miller

Michael G. Miller, 64, of DeWitt died July 10, 2014 with his family by his side. After a hard fought battle against cancer, he went to be with his Heavenly Father.

He was born December 7, 1949 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Naomi and the late Wilbur “Bully�

Miller. Mike was a lifelong resident of DeWitt, Arkansas where he had retired from a long career in auto body repair. He was enjoying retirement by being in the outdoors hunting, fishing, and most importantly spending time with his family, especially his two granddaughters.

He was survived by his one daughter, Terri (Jeff ) Jones and granddaughters Kennedy and Kristen of Hattiesville, Arkansas. His mother, Naomi, still resides in DeWitt. He is also survived by his brother Larry (Karen) Miller of Cabot, one stepbrother Delvin (Mildred) Miller of Albuquerque, New Mexico, nephew Kelly (Kelly) Miller, and his niece Kim (David) Keeling and their families.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2014 at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in DeWitt, Arkansas.

Jayce Lynn West and Brandon Carl Eastin were united in marriage May 31, 2014 at Gillett United Methodist Church.

The bride is the daughter of the late Terry West of Gillett and Kim Harmon of Smithville, Texas, and the granddaughter of J.C. and Nellie West of Dumas, and Dewey and Dottie Harmon of Hampton.

The groom is the son of the late Bradley Eastin of Hot Springs and Barbi Eastin of Branson, Missouri, and the grandson of Freddy and Kay Eastin of Benton, and Bill and Mary Mcinturff of Vilonia, and Maureen & Carl Breece of Hot Springs.

Wreaths of Burlap and Gerber daises and pots of ferns with flowers marked the entrance way to the sanctuary. The bride’s table was graced with a white crotched lace table cloth with white satin underlay. Alise and Amila West, cousins of the bride, of Bryant tended to the bride’s book. Miss Rexie Crane

of Bryant was the program attendant.

The sanctuary was filled with bright Gerber daises. Each pew was crowned with a mixture of Gerber daises and greenery. Behind the alter were two large candelabras and two 10 foot urns holding two ferns that graced the sanctuary.

The bride was given in marriage by her uncle David Nichols. The bride wore a white strapless bodice sweetheart neckline with an eyecatching and glamorous beaded waist and high-low hemline wedding dress.

The sister of the bride, Amber West, of Arkadelphia was Maid of Honor, and Sammi Jo Chappell of DeWitt was Matron of Honor.

They each carried a clutch bouquet of Gerber daises with mixed greenery and wore coral knee length strapless dresses.

Honorary bridesmaids were Misty Fox of Gillett, Jennifer Parnell of

Denver, Colorado, Rachel Gordon of Arkadelphia, Allison Gaston of Arkadelphia, and Holli Johnson of Benton. Each girl wore a dress of choice and carried a bouquet of Gerber daisies. The flower girls were Berkeley and Bentley Fox of Gillett and Elizabeth (Elle) Parnell of Denver, Colorado.

Brandon Stratton of Benton was best man and Travis Medcalf of Hot Springs was groomsman.They wore grey suits with coral ties and a grey vest with Gerber daisy boutonnieres. The ringbearers were Brick Fox of Gillett and Reid Parnell of Denver, Colorado.

Pianist, Thelma Gordon, welcomed guests with preludes. Claudette Cover sang “In this Very Room,” and “All of Me” was sung during the lighting of the Unity candle. Acolytes were Allison Gaston and Rachel Gordon.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a reception in the fellowship hall of the church. Arrangements of Gerber daises with greenery in blue mason jars were centered on each table covered with white table cloths with burlap and coral lace runners. The bride had a three-tier white butter cream confetti wedding cake topped with the letter “E.” The table was draped with a coral rosette table cloth. Rachael Gordon and Allison Gaston served the wedding cake.

The grooms cake was a rich chocolate cake topped with chocolate covered strawberries. The table was draped with burlap surrounded by bride and groom cookies.

Holli Johnson served the wedding cake.

Ed Wood video taped the wedding and reception, and Jona Howell was the photographer. Debbie Bohnert was wedding coordinator.

On the eve of the wedding, the parents held a wedding reception at Double Duce Lodge. After the Honeymoon to Destin, Florida, the couple will be at home in Maumelle, Arkansas.

Grand Prairie Quilt Society The Grand Prairie Quilt Society met July 9th for their quarterly Sit ‘n Sew at the Stuttgart Public Library with eight members present.

The June minutes and treasurer’s report were read and approved.

Happy Birthday greetings were extended to Audrey and Winnie.

Under New Business: The August 13 meeting will be a field trip to Little Rock to see two quilt exhibits: The Laman Library Argenta branch in North Little Rock is hosting “The Sum of Many Parts: Quiltmakers in Contemporary America.” The library is located at 420 S. Main St. in the remodeled post office building. The exhibit will run thru August 16.

The second exhibit is at the Historic Arkansas Museum at 200 East Third St. They will be hosting The Great Arkansas Quilt Show from August 8, 2014 thru May 3, 2015. The members will meet at the Stuttgart Public Library on August 13 and carpool to Little Rock at 9:00.

At the October Sit ‘n Sew, Shelley will demonstrate paper piecing and will hold a mini-workshop for the members. They will need to bring their sewing machines and several pieces of fabric. Shelley will bring the paper pattern blocks.

During Show and Share: Michele showed a treasured quilted wall hanging made for her by two of her quilting friends. It depicts the three of them sitting on the sofa working on their projects.

Cute touches include a photo of Michele’s dog on the wall and a saying on the back...” What happens at the quilting circle stays in the quilting circle.”

Betty recently went on a quilting bus tour to a Quilt show in Indiana. She saw many beautiful quilts and on the way back they stopped at the Clabber Girl baking powder factory. She showed everyone a lovely Clabber Girl pottery bowl and decorative tin she bought.

Sherrye displayed her Lost and Found quilt.

Maeola was proud to show off one of her UFO’s (unfinished object)...a beautiful “Stack and Whack Wheels” quilt. She also finished the Cook’s Lake picnic tote/blanket.

Glenda had several projects for the Xmas shoebox project: a crocheted hat and several drawstring bags for boys.

Shelley showed her finished paper-pieced blocks she made at the workshop at the Lower White River State Park in Des Arc in June.

She will show us how to do it at our October Sit ‘n Sew. Winnie showed her Log Cabin Quilt made from fabric she acquired on a Quilt tour several years ago.

The members settled down to do some serious sewing and visiting. Sewing machines hummed, scissors snipped, rotary cutters whooshed, and the iron was hot...

During the Sewing session: Glenda quilted a Friendship Quilt made up of blocks exchanged by members in 2009 (this was one of her UFO’s); Betty worked on the binding for her Chateau Rouge quilt, and cut out pieces for a Fan quilt; Michele sewed half-square triangles for a Chevron Charms quilt; Maeola cut out pieces for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle quilt; Sherrye worked on her T-shirt quilt; Shelley made Teddy Bear dolls for the Xmas shoebox project; Marsha cut strips for a Log Cabin quilt and crocheted on a Granny Square afghan.

Arkansas Post Colonial Kids Day Make your reservations for Colonial Kids Day July 19 Arkansas Post National Memorial presents Colonial Kids Day as part of the Family Fun Days series. The programs are from 9 AM to 1 PM. Kids will learn what life was like in 1700s Arkansas when France and Spain controlled the Post. Park Rangers will give talks on the fur trade, chores, and games of the era. There will also be historic weapons demonstrations with flintlock muskets and the six pound cannon. A Woman Rides the Beast

By William Wood Rev. 17:7 The Angel said “I will tell thee the mystery of the woman and of the Beast - - - - .” The most astounding prophecies in the Bible are found in the last book, known as The Revelation, or the apocalypse.

They were recorded by the apostle John in about A.D. 95.

John the Revelator was given a series of visions, showing God’s judgement upon on the people. Who in the last days would refuse to believe and obey God’s revealed Word. And so the Bible’s last and most terrifying prophecies concerning the future are revealed in this book!

Of all the things that God showed John, things that must shortly come to pass, none are as staggering as the vision he recorded in Rev. Chapter 17.

There we see a fearful looking, scarlet colored beast, with seven heads and ten horns.

Daniel the prophet saw it as well, some 600 years earlier. But as John saw the same beast, It then had a rider on its back! And the rider was a woman.

Bible scholars are in agreement that many times in Scripture the church is typed as being a woman. And it is so in the text we are studying. For centuries the beast itself has been the focus of attention, but in these last days many Born Again Christians have seen that the beast represents the revised Roman Empire, not as a secular, or national power, but as a Church Power, and as the evil empowered anti-Christ who will rule it! The leaders of the Reformation, who protested the wrong teaching of the Catholic Church, were certain that this woman represented the Roman Catholic Church.

I will quote Charles Spurgeon on the subject. (He was a mighty man in the Scripture, born in England in 1834) and was mightly used of God in the advancing of the Kingdom. (Quote) “It is the bounden duty of every Christian to pray against anti-Christ! And as to what anti-Christ is, no sane man ought to raise a question if it be not the Popery in the Church of Rome there is nothing in the world that can be called by that name.”

And so there the woman sits, very evidently in control, astride a world devouring creature that is called a Beast (Power).

The world will ignore John’s warning about the woman to its own hurt.

This sermon, and the sermons of other God called ministers, is dedicated to the multitudes of Catholic people who love The Lord, but who have never the less been wrongly taught by men who refuse to believe the Written Word of God. Does God love Catholic people? To deny that is to accuse God of sin! He loves all His creation, but He hates our sins, and our making any man our absolute, other than Jesus Christ!

How can any thinking person believe that a Pope of Rome is infallible? But this is Church doctrine!

How can any Bible student believe in a place called Purgatory, where for money God can be enticed to save a soul?

How can any thinking person say it’s wrong for a called minister of God to marry a wife? God leaves that to the ministers own choice, and it was never meant to be a rule in the Church!

We hear regularly about the sin this rule has caused in the Catholic Church.

We do know that this will not be pleasant reading to many, never-the-less it can all be documented by Holy Scripture.

Did you ever wonder why the Catholic Church had to write their own Bible?

The answer is, they will not accept the King James Version, and that is the one God has stood behind for centuries, proving it over and over. Amen

A Thought

Daniel “This battle is not for you to fight; take your position, stand still, and see the victory of the Lord on your behalf.” 2 Chronicles 20:17 (NRSV) Judah and King Jehoshaphat were facing overwhelming odds against the encroaching Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites; so the king lifted up his nation in prayer. In his prayer the king appealed to The Lord within the context of the Exodus when Israel was led around, rather than through, these nations enroute to the Promised Land: “[these nations] reward us by coming to drive us out of Your possession that You have given us to inherit” (2 Chronicles 20:11).

Though it is clear the king was gravely concerned about what may come to be, it nevertheless fell to him to lead his nation in prayer. Rather than to react hastily to a dangerous situation, the people of The Lord first turned to The Lord. In their faithfulness and, yes, in their fear, the prayer was answered. Though they were not released from the necessity of doing battle (“Tomorrow go out against them”, vs 17c), The Lord had assured His people that He would act “on your behalf ” first.

We face dangerous situations today as a nation, as a state, as a community, and as The Church. It is our inclination, however, to respond almost immediately to any given situation according to what we believe to be the best course of action (and very often, overreact) rather than to stop, pray, and wait until such time as The Lord may direct our actions.

And this, dear friends, is the difference between those of The Covenant and those outside of The Covenant. The Covenant of The Lord assures us that as His people, He will protect us; this is His part of His own Covenant to which He is bound! The assurance of The Covenant, however, applies only to those within that Covenant who will live in accordance with the terms of that Covenant. And this, I think, is where we face perhaps even greater challenges than the fear often invoked when we are overwhelmed.

We cannot know what the outcomes might look like nor can we really know exactly how The Lord will respond, but the Written Word assures us He will. This is what we cling to, for it is our hope. Perhaps the problems in the modern-day Church come from the

The Hardest Thing You’ll Ever Do

Partly because you don’t want to. And, partly because you need help to do it.

What is this seemingly invincible obstacle or foe?

It’s forgiving those who’ve hurt you.

You know—letting go of those injuries others have inflicted upon you by word and/or deed. Not keeping a record of others’ slights and slurs. Refusing to harbor resentment or bitterness in your heart. Relinquishing your rights to get even, “settle the course,” seek vengeance, etc.

And, again, that’s impossible to do in your own strength; yet failing to do so strains or break relationships. It also blinds and binds you as the “bile of bitterness” becomes a virtual cancer in your soul.

Yes, an unforgiving spirit will taint everything you’ll think, say and do. It’ll make you hypercritical and judgmental of others. There’ll be a sharp edge on everything you say. Your actions will be hurtful and vindictive—especially toward the one you’re bitter toward; yet, they may seem unaffected by it.

Partly because they enjoy seeing you suffer. Or, they may be oblivious to your seething resentment within, which infuriates you even more.

That’s why someone likened unforgiveness to trying to get back at the offender by you drinking poison.

It just doesn’t work. And, it sure will do a number on the one who refuses to forgive.

Mentally. Emotionally. Physically. Spiritually.

No wonder Jesus said “You cannot be forgiven by God until you forgive” (Matthew 6:14-15). Even if you profess to be one of His followers. . .go to church every Sunday. . .give to the poor. . .and visit the sick. . .but “don’t forgive other their trespasses against you, neither will your Heavenly Father forgive your trespasses” (v.15).

So, as the ‘ole saying goes, “The ball’s in your court.”

What are you going to do? Hang on your bitterness and be miserable for the rest of your life? Or, forgive, let go of the injustices and injuries you’ve received and go on with life?

The choice is yours.

Hopefully, you’ll realize life’s too short to pitch a tent on your resentment and continually nurse your reality that we simply will not “stand still” and fully trust that The Lord will do His own thing through and with His own people – we would rather our own thing be done!

“Be still, and know that I am The Lord. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10). By His decree, by His assurance, this is enough for His people.

Forgive them. Turn everything over to God. Bury those hurts in “The Land of Forgiveness and Forgottenness” and move on with life. Otherwise, you’ll always be the way you are and life will go on without you.

Again, the choice is yours.

On October 2, 2006 a 32-year-old man named Charles Roberts backed his pickup truck up to the front of a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, where Amish children attended. He barricaded the doors, called his wife and began binding his hostages with plastic ties. When police arrived, but refused to leave, he began shooting the children.

And, when the officers stormed the building, he committed suicide.

His was a life filled with bitterness over things in the past. He finally reached the tipping point and others suffered because of it.

However, the Amish people didn’t give in to hatred or vengeance; they began ministering to the killer’s family, even though five of their children had died and four other young girls—ages six to 13—had been sexually abused.

They cooked for the murderer’s family. They attended his funeral service. They held his grieving wife and parents in their arms. They set up a charitable fund for his family in his name.

How/why could they do this?

Simply because they’d experienced firsthand God’s Love and Forgiveness through Christ. They knew Jesus had forgiven them on the Cross and shed His Blood so they could be pardoned and spend eternity with Him. They also knew they wouldn’t be forgiven if they didn’t forgive.

Here’s praying you also know that, dear Reader, and will “let go and let God.” Forgive those who’ve hurt you. Ask forgiveness from those you’ve offended.

Then, get on with life, letting the Heavenly Father use you as He sees fit. Only then will you know what it means to “have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Only then. God bless you.

Rice Expo

Love edamame, but don’t know what to do with it?

The 2014 Arkansas Rice Expo has the answer.

This year’s Rice Expo is set for Friday, Aug. 1, at the Grand Prairie Center, 2807 Highway 165 South, in Stuttgart.

The expo will feature a cooking demonstration of this year’s signature dish, Edamame Chicken Stir-Fry, which is made from rice, chicken, edamame, broccoli and carrots.

The dish is chosen because “all of the ingredients can be grown in Arkansas,” said Leigh Ann Bullington, Cross County extension agent for the University of Arkansas System of Agriculture. That’s why this dish is special, she said.

Edamame Chicken Stir-Fry is also healthy and delicious.

“We want attendees to learn that rice fits in a healthy diet,” said Bullington, who will be doing the demonstration.

Although it sounds fancy, it only takes 10 to 15 minutes to prepare, once rice is cooked, she said.

What’s cooking at the expo?

Edamame Chicken Stir-Fry cooking demonstration is at 8:30 a.m.

Two other healthy and delicious dishes will also be demonstrated at the Rice Expo. Garlic Herb Spread cooking demonstration will be at 10 a.m. by presenter VeEtta Simmons followed by a demonstration of Ambrosia Rice by Dana Kelly at 11 a.m.

All three dishes highlight different main ingredients, which are vegetables, herb or fruit.

Living Well with Rice Cooking Demonstrations will be at Salon B Stage 1, which is different from last year.

In another stage, three horticulture seminars on vegetable production, fruit production, and herb production will also take place.

The best rice recipe contestants from around the state will also be presenting their dishes in the Rice Recipe Contest. The first-place winner’s recipe will be featured at next year’s Rice Expo cookbook.

Grow for the Green Soybean Yield Contest - Entry deadline August 1, 2014 The Arkansas Soybean Association is pleased to announce the continuation of the Grow for the Green Soybean Yield Challenge. This is the 4th year for the contest and it is open to all soybean producers in Arkansas and the entry deadline is August 1.

The 2014 format continues with the geographic regions and prizes. The state is divided into seven (7) geographic regions and an entire state conventional (non-gmo) category. Categories are: 1. Northeast Delta: Mississippi, Crittenden, East of Crowley’s Ridge (Clay, Greene, Craighead, Poinsett, Cross) 2. Northeast: Randolph, Lawrence, West of Crowley’s Ridge (Clay, Greene, Craighead, Poinsett, Cross) 3. White River Basin: Independence, Jackson, Woodruff, White, Monroe 4. Central & Grand Prairie: Pulaski, Lonoke, Prairie, Arkansas 5. East Central Delta: St. Francis, Lee, Phillips, Desha (Snow Lake Area) 6. Southeast Delta: Jefferson, Lincoln, Drew, Ashley, Chicot, Desha 7. Western: Remainder of the state 8. Conventional Division: Entire state non-gmo production.

Cash prizes for each category will be awarded to the top 3 producers (minimum of 60 bushels/acre) at the Arkansas Soybean Association Annual Meeting in January. First place is worth $10,000, 2nd place is worth $7,500, and 3rd place is $5,000. In additional, the top 3 in the state across all categories will receive additional prize money.

Crop production information is being compiled by personnel with the Arkansas Soybean Association and/or the University Of Arkansas Division Of Agriculture as a resource for Arkansas producers on all those who enter the contests. 2013 data is available on the Arkansas Soybean Association website at www. arkansassoybean.com . Extension Agronomist for Soybeans, Jeremy Ross says, “these contests and the production information gleaned from the producers show the continued potential of soybean production in Arkansas. All producers should be interested in the results. “The 2013 crop year produced 3 winners in the Race for 100 Yield Challenge. Matt Miles, McGehee; Nelson Crow, Dumas; and Eddie Tackett, Atkins each achieved the elusive 100 Bu/acre. They split the $50,000 prize money. They are now the founding members of the Arkansas 100 Bushel Club. Producers that achieve the 100 bushel mark are eligible for $10,000 (divided if more than one) and membership in the club.

This contest is administered by the Arkansas Soybean Association with funding provided by the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board using soybean checkoff funds. Crop management assistance is provided by the University Of Arkansas Division Of Agriculture Extension Personnel and many of our state certified crop consultants.

The field must have been planted to soybeans in at least one of the last three production years prior to 2014 and the contestant must have paid the appropriate checkoff assessments on the soybeans.

Hot Work and Sad Losses

By Don Roth In Northern Arkansas, Gen. Shelbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s elusive operations continued to the bitter consternation of Gen. Steele at Little Rock and Brig. Gen. Napoleon B. Buford at Helena. The latter had the scantiest forces and felt especially vulnerable when Gen. Shelby was on the east side of the White River during the Clarendon-Queen City venture.

For a time separate detachments were kept in motion at the railroad west of DeValls Bluff, with orders to burn, waste and destroy.

On July 14, near a bayou between Searcy and Bayou Des Arc, a battalion of the Tenth Illinois Cavalry was overrun during an early morning surprise attack with 60% losses in men and firearms.

Shelbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s military success inspired the recruits he had been gathering, while his heavy handed suppression of predatory gangs, who were shot where found, brought the warm approval of the citizens. The necessity of feeding and mounting the five to six thousand recruits occasionally brought Shelbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s command in conflict with the citizens.

He then issued safeguards for the livestock and property of needy citizens who appealed to him for protection.

Rigid discipline had to be enforced to make safeguards work by holding commanding officers responsible for the conduct of their men. In one instance Shelby had his quartermaster, Major R. J. Lawrence, to assess the damages on wheat belonging to families and deducted the damages from the pay of Col. Ben Elliot, his chief of scouts.

Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood replaced Gen. Joseph E. Johnston as commander of the Army of Tennessee on July 17,

1864. President Jefferson Davis was about to become a nervous wreck at Johnstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s defensive strategy that produced no large wins or losses while giving up space. Retreating in the face of overwhelming odds since May now placed the Southern Army just outside the imperiled city of Atlanta, Shermanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s target.

Hood launched a sortie east of the city on July 22, afterward called the Battle of Atlanta. Despite a promising attack, the offensive fell short.

Young men from Arkansas County paid with their lives while enduring the severity of the operation and a gruesomeness that extended beyond the battlefield. Years later a Memphis native who enlisted from Mt. Adams Arkansas gave this account: â&#x20AC;&#x153;In Co. K there was three bros Nobles, two of them were in the infirmary corps, Milt and Fayette. Fayette was a Seargent.

Their mess mate chum Falton English got his leg broken and they were taking (him) on a stretcher. As he was heavy and the day hot they stoped to rest, squatted at the ends, when a cannon shot came (and) cut Fayette into at the middle. So Milt was left with bro & friend alone.â&#x20AC;?

The 1860 Arkansas County census reveals Milton and Leonard Nobles (not Fayette) as 18 and 20 years old respectively. They had resided between Casscoe and Big Lagrue Bayou since the 1840â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Today a large portion of their former acreage is occupied by the farms of Raymond Sweetin, Gary Oliver and Trotter Farms.
